~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Don't know what to read/start with? Recommendations and trigger warnings under the cut!
Cells at Work (The original manga): A nice series that teaches you the basics of cells, mostly immune cells but they do include some gut immunity in the 2nd season, filled with a nice balance of angst and fluff, includes a prominent ship although it isn't the main point of the series and they don't actually say out loud if they like each other romantically or anything.
TWs: Includes a lot of blood, slicing of knives/violence in general, cancer (anthropomorphized, but they do say the word a lot of course), violently biting things until they gush out blood/whatever they're made from
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cells at Work: Code Black: An angsty series, a lot of sadness in general, although it looks like a gender swap of the original, the contents are also very opposite to the original. This series takes place in a different host body. Not fluffy, bad work environments, cells suffering in general. If you love seeing little fictional people suffering or want a reason to take better care of your body, this is the series for you!
TWs: Blood, violence, actual bazookas/guns, nsfw topics like unsafe sex and others, major and minor character deaths, drug mention both beneficial and unbeneficial, attempted suicide, ACTUAL suicide, depression, cancer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Platelets at Work: A very nice and fluffy series about the children of Cells at Work, takes place in the body of the original CaW manga, features the platelet team we all love and their master Megakaryocyte. It's a very nice slice of life series that talks about the platelets doing their best and being children, very cute 10/10.
TWs: Tbh, I'm not sure, maybe i can reread it and see, but i don't think there's anything worth a warning.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cells at Work and Friends: My personal favorite, features a Killer T cell with social anxiety as it's protagonist. A great slice of life that doesn't have much about education of biology. A lot of misunderstandings, a lot of funny and relatable moments, I'm sure all of us can relate to at least 1 of the chapters.
TWs: Blood, slicing and dicing and violence, eating and dead bacteria/viruses that would usually be very gorey are censored, depression and suicide mention (from one specific character, you can avoid him if you like and still enjoy the series), sewing needles on specific chapters, mention of nsfw
Reply if you'd want me to reference which chapters have the trigger so you can avoid it while still enjoying most of it
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cells at Work Baby: Much like the original, featuring 2 red blood cells as the main character instead of a white blood cell, just as educational as the original and all the characters are in a cute chibi style.
TWs: Blood, slicing, a little violence but it isn't as bad as the original, character death
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bacteria At Work: I have yet to read this fully, but i have read the first chapter, full of pretty men and talks about gut bacteria and dietary stuff.
TWs: Unknown (to me)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cells NOT At Work: More of a slice of life compared to the original, it is quite educational on the development of red blood cells. Real LGBT rep, a wide range of characters and dynamics, made me very emotional, though i haven't read the last volume.
TWs: Mention of death/character death, and maybe slicing and killing in the last volume
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cells At Work Lady: Because this manga has yet to be translated officially, i have yet to read it, but it talks about the anatomy of women, from periods to pregnancy, there is quite a lot. They also include pretty men!
TWs: NSFW mention, slicing and dicing of various things, potentially more that i am unaware of.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cells At Work Illegal: Lastest CaW manga spinoff to be released as of writing, the name speaks for itself. Usage of drugs, smoking, drinking, and potentially many more. It is untranslated, so I cannot truly understand what it is about, but thats the gist of it. Also the main characters might be potentially a little gay
TWs: Drug usage, a lot of slicing and dicing and blood, NSFW (not just mention I'm pretty sure)
(WhiteCancer) Cells At Work AU: Threes
Clones aren’t supposed to be sentient. Cancer’s just a forever fuck-up. But he loves this strange clone. And, soon, U-1146 does, too.
Read More on AO3 OR...
~
It was meant to be a joke.
Normal cells don’t wear hats (Cancer never had a chance to learn WHY that is but he figured it has something to do with the way viruses like influenza spreads: via attachments to the cell’s head/brain that end up looking like really funky hats) and other cells like Red, White, T, and B all seem to have a dumb attachment (no pun intended) to THEIRS, so Cancer wanted to have some FUN with that.
Meaning, of course, that he wanted to TEASE his kind-hearted killer, U-1146.
So, during their first fight in his third outbreak, he stole his hat.
~
It was only meant to tease.
Cancer had wanted to keep a part of his kind killer with him wear the hat and joke that he was a White Blood Cell, himself: after all, he’s about as white, right?
But when the chips settled down (literally in The Body’s stomach acid) and, assuming what Cancer heard blaring through the immune cell’s radio was right, a tape worm was sighted trying to latch itself onto The Body, he took his chance.
Cancer ran off as a mass of flesh carefully protecting a White Blood Cell hat.
~
It was meant to be NORMAL.
The slob of flesh that came off him so he could mold it like clay into something—soldier-like, his mind had fleetingly thought; and, if Cancer can be honest, that... might be WHY this happened in the first place; because, as much as they deny it (and, no, he’s not sure if he means the White Blood Cells or Killer Ts or BOTH), ALL members of the Immune System ARE soldiers: including his kind killer...—that was supposed to be like every other cancerous tumor he’d ever made.
It was supposed to be a brainless, faceless, worthless, meaningless CLONE.
The sweet, smiling little boy with his hair and HIS eyes... is anything but.
((Inspired by Forgive, Not Forget and my inane kink for power bottoms in their service top’s stuff. I really wanted Cancer in 1146′s jacket or something but the hat is a good first and just easier... We’ll get to the jacket a little later~ >;3 For now tho: CAW fandom, you have now been POKED! xD;;; Please let me know what you think; I really love this ship but it seems kinda dead so...))
Code Black confirms in the Cancer arc that all cells actually do have a number name like red blood cells and white blood cells! The one cancerous cell that Aa2153 helped is K-9999!
OMG YAY I FINALLY HAVE SOME NAMES TO CALL MY CAW OCS WOOOOOOOO
Heeeeyyyyyy!! Im really sorry for the late reply, I was busy for the past week!!
I got around to starting CAW manga!! it is *really* good. I personally prefer it to the anime!! I had to read it from the start bc I forgot almost everything about the plot and now that I have read it back to back, I am surprised by how connected it is! I thought the chapters would be unrelated to each other and instead focusing on the educational aspect of the show, but it is surprisingly very well paced! (I haven't finished it yet though)
BASOPHIL BEING 1146 AND EOSINOPHIL'S SENPAI?? OH MY GOD???
I really didn't expect him to look like a shoujo love interest this is so funny
He takes off his mask and it's the most gorgeous guy you have ever seen.
I ALSO read the first part of the abnormalities series!!!
GOOD GOD GOODNESS GRACIOUS. 3803 my POOR GIRL. Her insurance better cover the much needed therapy sessions
I *really* liked the parallels with her and cancer being abnormal. I never thought of it that way.....
ALSO THE BIT WITH THE FAKE 1145 CAP?? THAT WAS VILE LMFAOOO
HE IS GOING TO HELL FOR THIS
The part in me who usually doesn't care about shows plots and just wants everyone to be friends wishes there could be a timeline where cancer is their *harmless* friend, but alas.
+ NK looks SOO adorable, Macrophage is as gorgeous as well. I really love it when girls look up to other girls 😔🙏
Thanks for the good read and hope u have a great day!! :DDD
No need to apologize! Heheh, we all have our lives to live, I'm just happy that you're okay! :D
Anyway, nice! I loved the manga when I first read it in 2018! It was really great and I love the little tidbits about actual cell biology and science! And yeah, the arcs sort of move into each other seamlessly, often bringing characters from the past into the present arc (depending on what pathogen/teratogen is in the body).
Yeah! He's their senpai! He's adorable and I wish he didn't have to cover himself up all the time, but he was just so adorable as a younger basophil, hahah! Even then he was still very msyterious!
Oh my gosh! You're reading it? Yooooooo! It's been a while, I hope you aren't too traumatized! :D
One of the main reasons why I made Abnormalities was because of the parallels I noticed and how I perceived their interactions would go. I'm glad that you were hooked on it!
And yes, I am that evil! I remember having so much writing that chapter, I wanted to break AE-3803 while simultaneously making sure that Cancer was a menace both physically and psychologically.
Timeline where Cancer is their friend… Well, there is the rest of the Abnormalities series… The series is an overarching plot where AE-3803, U-1146, and Cancer confront their persnoal demons, weaknesses, and what it's like to have their roles predetermined in the body. I wouldn't say true redemption is in the cards for Cancer, but AE-3803 eventually talk it out.
More love for the CAW girls!
Thank you so much for the kind words and you are very much welcome! I hope that you have a wonderful day! :D
For the emoji asks, if you don't mind!
😅😈🛒🎃
Hey, Devin here!
Thanks for the emoji asks!
Anyway:
😅 What's a story or scene you've created that you're a smidge embarrassed exists?
You mean besides the planned fic that I have in the works that may or may not include some taboo, nsfw stuff? Hehehehe....
In all seriousness, back in my ff.net days, I used to upload parodies of songs that would go with the theme of the fandom that I was writing for. They were... bad? decent? Like, I got reviews and feedback, but it was more of the "lmao" variety.
I also... had a bad habit of writing "crack" fics... but they were basically childish antics that I probably should have outgrown at the age I was writing them in, so if you read them... you might think I was like in middle school.
And no, I'm not going to cite any specifics, but feel free to peruse my 2012-2014 era on ff.net, hehehe.
😈 Has there been a point in a story where you did something just to be playfully mean to your readers?
Hahahahahahah.
Okay, so for those of you who aren't familiar (which I'm guessing might be a lot), but before I created this blog with the intention for writing for prompts, I was a fan of Cells at Work. I had written stories back in its heyday of 2018, but had eventually stopped because of burnout and in real life problems.
Eventually, however, a fan of both of my fanfics and of CAW approached my via anon and began asking for my takes on specific characters, scenarios, interactions, etc. Eventually, that would lead to the infamous crackship Cancer/Red Blood Cell to blossom from dark, yandere-ish dialogue to an actual multi-chaptered fic that would span over three stories and a one-shot in a series affectionately known as a "Series of Abnormalities".
Those of you who are familiar are probably getting war flashbacks, ;D
Basically, it was a series that would explore what it was like to be rendered helpless, to lose oneself, to experience trauma in its many forms, and how to best deal with the problems and hindrances in our everyday lives. It also dealt with letting go of our pasts, the subject of forgiveness and if we actually need to forgive our transgressors, and how to accept the fact that an apology can never be enough for acts of an atrocity?
There's lore, there's worldbuilding, there's ships, there's yandere-elements, and above all else, there was ANGST.
Dear anon, I went above and beyond with the angst.
Each of the series had a main protagonist and each of those protagonists were deep in the SHIT with ANGST.
It fit the theme of what I was writing, but I was also being kinda mean? But in a fun way, I hope.
Like, I was sharing previews and sneak peeks on my main blog because the CAW anon always chimed in with what they liked, the theories they had regarding my story, etc. It was wonderful and it helped me realize the story that I wanted to tell. Consequently, I wanted to wow them with the finished project.... Hence why each of the main protags got their own time in the spotlight, which also happened to double as a battering ram of heartbreaking angst and crippling/emboldening character development.
Dear anon, it was amazing reading the reviews and reactions. ;D
As for this blog, sometimes I twist the prompts around to get rid of misogynistic subtext (even if the requester themself didn't mean it) or if I feel the prompt does the character a disservice.
🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.
OKAY.
But I feel like I'm going to call myself out on here.
If you comb through my stories, you will realize that I definitely favor a few common... literary devices?
I love the rule of three. Like, absolutely love it. Three is my favorite number because it establishes a theme in the context of the story and it shows how a character changes or remains stagnant when a certain element is shown three times.
Furthermore, bookends. Bookends is a trope is basically showing similar themes/ideas from the beginning of the story and then mirroring it in the ending. What I really love about this trope is that it shows the similarities, differences, growths, and changes that has happened over the course of the story.
When it comes to character, I absolutely love delving into their thoughts and what it feels to be like them. For some already analytical characters, it makes them already more cold and aloof. Whereas, with characters who aren't as portrayed as intellectual as often it makes them have more depth. I'm stuck in my head in real life, but can be observant at times, and it shows in my writing.
When we get down to it, I think the themes that really show through are answering the questions of whether or not the character has developed (and if so, in what way), whether or not the status quo within the plot has changed (for the better or the worse), and portraying the motivations in a way that humanizes them (because we are all human in the end).
🎃 Do you write fics for certain holidays? Which is your favorite holiday inspired fic?
Hmmm... Not really?
If I write a fic and happen to post on a holiday, that's pretty great I guess?
I really don't do holiday fics nowadays.
However, sometimes, if I'm really into a series, I will plans weeks or months in advance to write a fic in celebration of the days of its first publication, submission date, etc.
I can't find an example, but I'm pretty sure I did.
Thanks for the ask and I hope that you have a wonderful day! :D
Feel free to ask more! :D
CaW Appreciation Week, Day 03: OTP
Cancer Cell/Red Blood Cell AE-3803
Scene taken from Cells At Work, Episode 02
Everyone hates my true form. The immune cells all want to kill me. Why me? What did I do except being born? But today... Today someone thanked me. Today I helped someone. For one day, one person needed me.
Let me think she thanked him off screen.
CAW Appreciation Week Day 05: Crossover
Series: CAW and Bleach Disclaimer: CAW (c) Shimizu Akane and Bleach (c) Tite Kubo Human names: AE3803 - Akamine Akane Cancer Cell - Shirai Ganjirou Eosinophil - Eri You can probably consider this to be set prior to the series, but not as far back as the TBTP Arc. Also, I can’t really remember the consensus of whether souls can remember their human lives (I’ve heard they can’t, but IIRC parrot boy remembered Chad when he comes to the SS with Ichigo and co). So, in this fic, I’m going with the idea that, while it is possible, it’s very rare. By the way, in this, they do still recall their names because, I just feel like…your name isn’t something you would just forget. --------- Akane runs as fast as she can, her bare feet hitting the pavement. Tucked under her arm is a loaf of bread. A man is chasing her, brandishing a stick, calling her a dirty thief and yelling at her to stop. The red-haired girl darts down an alleyway in an attempt to lose her pursuer. Unfortunately for her, he anticipates this and heads down the next alleyway. As she emerges from the other end of the alleyway, he roughly grabs her arm and shoves her against the wall. “I’ll teach you to steal from me,” he snarls. Akane instinctively shuts her eyes as the man raises his free hand. However, before the blow can hit her, the man lets out a yelp of pain. Another hand grabs hers and a voice says, “Run.” She opens her eyes to see a boy around her age with white hair and green eyes. Something about him seems familiar, almost as if they’ve met before. But that can’t be true. She’s never seen anyone else around with eyes that shade of green. As soon as they’re far enough away, he stops and turns back to face her. “What are you doing in a place like this?” he asks, tilting his head slightly. “This is where I was sent.” The boy looks at her, an expression of disbelief on his face. She doesn’t look like someone who belongs in this District. It is a place rife with corruption and violence and murder (because, even though this is the afterlife, it doesn’t mean you can’t die again). It isn’t a place for someone like the girl standing in front of him. “Thanks,” she says, “I’m Akane, by the way. Akamine Akane.” She then offers some of the bread to the boy. “For helping me,” she says. He waves his hand and says,
“You have it. If you’re needing food, that must mean you possess spiritual power.” “Yeah.” “You ever consider joining the Academy?” “I’ve thought about it,” she says. “It’d be a way out of here,” he tells her, “I’m going to sit the entrance exam this year.” They go their separate ways. Akane doesn’t expect to see him again. Rukongai is a vast place, with thousands of souls like her, and more coming in each day. She still can’t shake the familiarity of the white-haired boy though. As she heads back to the shack she’s living in, she thinks to herself that maybe she will sit the exam too. It might be her chance to see him again, maybe even determine why he seemed familiar to her. It’s as she curls up on the ground, that she realises something…she doesn’t even know the boy’s name. Still, there can’t be that many boys with white hair and eyes that shade of green. That night, Akane has a dream. When she wakes, she can only recall snippets of it. But there’s one thing that stands out. A white-haired boy named Shirai Ganjirou. A white-haired boy who looks identical to the soul who saved her the day before. She dismisses it as a coincidence. Apart from their names, souls don’t retain their memories upon entering the Soul Society. Or at least, it’s extremely rare that they do. And, the chance of meeting someone you knew from the World of the Living – well, unless you died at the same time and received your tickets at the same time – that chance is so small, it’s almost non-existent. The dreams don’t stop though. Still, Akane dismisses them as her brain trying to fill in the blanks. A couple weeks later, Akane runs into him again. “Oh,” he says, “You’re that soul from before. Akane, wasn’t it?” She nods. “You never told me your name,” she says. “Ganjirou,” he replies, “Shirai Ganjirou.” Akane is taken aback. It has to be a coincidence, her mind tells her. It can’t be though. It’s too much of a coincidence. “Akane?” Ganjirou asks. He waves a hand in front of her face. Akane blinks, snapping out of her thoughts. “Sorry,” she mutters. Ganjirou averts his gaze, staring down at the dirt. Ever since he saved Akane that day, he couldn’t help shake the feeling that he knew her from somewhere. And then he started having dreams. Dreams about a girl who looked like her and a boy who looked like him. But when he woke, he could only remember snippets of the dreams. However, the night before, Ganjirou had a dream that confirmed everything. He knew Akane when he was alive. “You know how there are rare occasions where a soul can remember their life in the Human World?” he asks. “Yeah?” “I think…” he begins. He then falters. “Forget it. It doesn’t matter.” He wants to tell her, but can’t help but think that the chance of them both remembering is so unlikely it’s pretty much impossible. The two of them go their separate ways again, but this time Ganjirou tells Akane where to look for him if she wants to see him again. That night, Akane has another dream. But unlike the other times, when she wakes, she remembers every detail of it. She runs, no sprints all the way to the spot where Ganjirou says she would be able to find him. She stops and bends over, hands on her knees, catching her breath, before standing up again. “Ganjirou?” she asks, “It’s me. Akane.” The door slowly opens. Ganjirou leans against the door frame, rubbing his eyes. “Sorry,” she says, “Did I wake you?” “It’s fine.” “I had a dream last night,” she tells him, “about…that day.” Ganjirou’s eyes go wide before he gestures for her to come inside. That day was supposed to be the happiest day of their life. That day was supposed to be the start of their life together. That day was supposed to be the start of something. But it wound up being the end of everything. Akane looks up. Ganjirou is leaning over her, as if shielding her. There is a large gash on his forehead and blood is dripping from it. She looks down to see more blood. It is with a start that she realises that some of it is hers too. She looks around. There is no way out. Both of them are too injured to move and she can’t reach her phone or his from this angle either. She can only pray that help will come, and that it will come soon. “A…kane…” Ganjirou’s voice is weak. “We’ll be fine,” she says, trying to reassure both him and herself, “Eri would have called 119.” “A…kane,” he repeats, “I…love…you. I’lll…find you…in…the…next world. I…promise.” Those are the last words he ever speaks. “I’ll find you in the next world,” he whispers, “I promise.” Akane can feel tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. “It really is you…” she gasps, making her way closer. She reaches up and places her hand on his cheek. “Ganjirou…” When a person enters the Soul Society, the odds of them finding or remembering anyone they knew while they were alive are so small, they’re basically non-existent. Yet, against these odds, Ganjirou and Akane did both. A month later, the two of them are lining up to sit the entrance exam for the Shin’o Academy. “Which Division do you hope to join?” Ganjirou asks. “Fourth,” she replies. Ganjirou smiles. “I should have known,” he comments. Akane smiles back. She had wanted to be a doctor in the Human World, so to join the Division whose specialty (well, one of) was healing seemed appropriate. “What about you?” she asks. Ganjirou shrugs. “I don’t mind,” he replies, “as long as we still get to see one another.” “Of course.” With those words, Akane reaches down and clasps Ganjirou’s hand. The two of them look straight ahead, ready to face whatever awaits them. --------- A/N: I was originally going to have Ganjirou want to join the 12th Division because both Cancer Cell and Kurotsuchi Mayuri are twisted and hot af.
