As you drive in to the Surprise Valley community of Eagleville California from the south one of the first things you see is the Eagleville Community Church. The beautiful old structure was built in 1887 and has obviously been lovingly cared for. I thought it looked wonderful in mid-morning light as I rolled into this quiet little community on a June morning.

Surprise Valley is about as remote as one can get in the state of California, save maybe the depths of the Mohave Desert or Death Valley. I must admit being somewhat remiss in living only a couple hours from the area and not spending nearly enough time there. This is something I hope to fix before too long. My favorite wtf fact about maritime history is definitely that while yeah, sometimes ships collide, there is more than one ship that rammed another ship, survived, and went on to RAM ANOTHER SHIP. You'd think this is both rare enough and teaches a lesson so that one ship shouldn't do it twice.

My second favorite fact is that a surprising number of Norwegian ships have rammed other ships, including a Norwegian ocean vessel (!) sinking another ship on the Great Lakes (which are notably not an ocean.)

My THIRD favorite fact is that the ships doing the ramming usually come out more or less fine. And even if one or both ships sink, they often are refloated and remain in service. The ship that sank the Andrea Doria in 1956, back then called Stockholm, is still in use!

Cedarville is going through its own Do Right moment:

After all, the university’s mishandling of Title IX cases is only substantiated by what White calls:

“Rumors,” “gaps in information,” and “guesses.”

White launches into a strange anecdote about feeling convicted about being nosy about a fictitious death’s attendant circumstances. He condemns this behavior with a tut-tut: it’s our “typical sinful inclination” and “human nature” to “wanna know everything” and, damningly, “assume the worst.” Under this interpretation, students’ concern for how the university handles Title IX cases relegates them to mere busybodies and gossips. Wanting more information about what White would consider to be people’s personal lives, not a pattern of university behavior, is sinful. It’s telling that he does not contemplate that, according to statistics, at least a sixth of his audience are survivors, maybe wondering: how will the University treat me if I come forward? Instead, White puts himself and the students in the same category of mutual confusion: “We don’t know what we don’t know.”

Small College Basketball Tidbits

There's lots happening in college basketball at the small college basketball. Here are several tidbits to keep you in the loop with some of the recent accomplishments:

Emmanuel's KJ Jones just became the school's all-time leading scorer, as he currently has 2,756 career points, surpassing Larry James, who has held the record since 1999.

In Bethel's (IN) win over Taylor yesterday, Drew Lutz surpassed 2,000 career points.

Gannon's Lyle Tipton scored his 2,000th career point yesterday. He scored 1,758 points at Geneva, and has scored 242 points thus far this season at Gannon.

Colorado School of Mines Coach Pryor Orser just became the all-time wins leader in RMAC history, as he now has 310 RMAC wins, and 437 overall wins.

Rowan's Ja'Zere Noel scored 35 points in yesterday's 112-79 win over William Patterson, which pushed him over the 1,000-point barrier.....in just two seasons with Rowan.

In Cedarville's 98-70 win over Wilberforce, Jayvon Maughmer went for a triple-double of 16 points, 12 assists & 11 rebounds.

In back-to-back games, Emporia State saw two different players go for triple doubles. In a win against Friends, Darius Yohe had 11 points, 12 rebounds and 11 blocks. In the following game - a win against Newman - Alijah Comithier went for 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

There are only three undefeated teams left in all of college basketball at the small college levels: Grace, Langston and Trinity (CT). Grace is 18-0; Langston is 17-0; Trinity is 18-0.
