The Inx: Jinx's Great and Terrible Devotees in Spite of Conv/rgence

The most annoying thing about Conv/rgence as a game is that it introduces great concepts, like the Inx, but just fumbles the execution of them and the overall story.

In Conv/rgence the Inx are a new chempunk gang of Zaunite teens and young adults that idolize and borderline worship Jinx to the point where they're said to spread chaos in her name. But the Zaun that Conv/rgence establishes tells a different story about the Inx from the intended description.

The first time the Inx appear is in the Conv/rgence comic, where the lead members like Chadd play at the Triumph Festival. It's supposed to be a Zaunite festival to celebrate Jayce's defeating Viktor, the Machine Herald. If the Inx follow Jinx's lifestyle why would they even play at such an event to celebrate a Piltovan, and why would Zaunites think the Inx wouldn't make trouble over it? I could go on about how weird it is for Zaun to host a festival to celebrate Jayce, a Piltovan champion for a fight unrelated to them and their wellbeing, but that would take too long.

For people who admire Jinx's boldness, the best they can do in the comics is pretty harmless vandalism where they just graffiti Jinx's monkey tag over some walls. The Inx are also nowhere to be seen in major events like the Scraptown Run, which apparently all Zaun gangs participate in.

Then there's members like Moshpit Meg. Meg's a diehard Jinx fan that loves Jinx's attitude and dedication to explosions. Before that Meg was admired Vi, the enforcer, because Vi's gauntlets reminded Meg of her own naturally big fists and it made her feel less self conscious about her own hands. That second half begs too many questions I don't have time for.

Outside of aesthetic choices there isn't really anything about the Inx that says they're people who stake their identity around Jinx. This is largely because Conv/rgence's universe works hard to sanitize Zaunite grievances against Piltover which directly undermines the central class conflict between Zaun and Piltover. It also largely impacts the motivations and general existence of characters like Jinx and the people who follow her, like the Inx, because they wouldn't exist in the absence of Piltover's oppression.

To avoid addressing any real conflict between the two cities the Inx are only vaguely make sense in the story, especially the game. All except for one element, Chadd. I need to say this...

Chadd is Accidentally (on Purpose?) Great

The brief moments the audience gets to know Chadd's character gives us an interesting glimpse at the people Jinx inspires.

The first thing we know about Chadd is that he's a musician, and it's neat trait that connects him to the musical roots of Jinx's character. In League, Jinx was the first champion in League to debut with a music video. It was through Jinx's character that Riot and Fortiche begun experimenting League with music. So it's very fitting that Convergence creates a chorus of sorts for Jinx to continue that musical tradition. To add to that, the game's promo posters decided to reestablish Jinx's connections by making her a talented karaoke singer.

The next thing to know about Chadd is that he was the one who planne and organized the Inx to transform a rundown theatre into an airborne concert arena. Red, Ekko's close friend and romantic interest in the game, confirmed that it was Chadd who was the one to make it happen, within a week too. It's an impressive creative feat that's clearly in homage to "Get Jinxed's" aerial imagery. Despite how cool a stunt that was I couldn't see how it was meant to impress Jinx, she was the most destructive thing in the theater... until I read the transcript "Hold me like a Fermata".

A shotgun, a flame thrower... who's funeral were you planning Chadd!??!? Just for context this was a transcript Ekko found of Chadd and the Inx talking about a new weapon (and sound system?) Chadd seemed to have made. I'm sure Chadd was the one who made it because the Fermata is also the name of a musical note that represents a pause (sometimes dramatic) in a score.

If you're familiar with music you might also know that the Fermata has more than one name, it's also referred to as "the Cyclops Eye". That kind of reference to Silco used on a weapon for a later act to honor Jinx couldn't have been lost on the writers because the Eye of Zaun was already found on an Inx hangout.

When I finally noticed all these details I finally got that Chadd is dangerously devoted to Jinx. All the points in his character can only lead us to conclude the real plan wasn't to just play obnoxiously loud music when the theater reached Piltover's heights, it was to destroy Piltover with all the weapons they equipped on it. That's the best idea I can come up with because Jinx immediately throws bombs at their plan to cause havoc in Piltover... for reasons. It does match Jinx's track record at least, usually other dangerous or apathetic champions tend to appreciate her, like Urgot, Renata Glasc, and Khada Jhin.

Even Chadd's concept art communicates that he's probably more devoted to Jinx than rest of the Inx. The way his early design evolves to reflect Jinx's influence could even tell a story. The more this douchey glam rocker finds inspiration in Jinx the more he changes himself and his art to reflect Jinx's impact. Chadd grows his hair out, wears his tattoo of Jinx in the same place she wears hers, and even dresses more like her, but he still retains his own diva personality.

One last thing, the funniest thing about Chadd is the fact that both Ekko and Red seperately ask him to explain himself and what "statement" he's trying to make with the Inx. Chadd just flat out refuses to answer, and even breaks up with Red over that. I thought he was being douche (he was), but then I remembered Jinx doesn't explain herself in game either about the mayhem she causes, she just taunts anyone who asks. The student learns from the master I guess.

Tldr: In the Converegence game and comics the Inx are characterized by mild vandalism and pretentious artists. And I could almost get behind that idea if only Convergence wasn't so heavily biased towards Piltover the dynamics of a group like the Inx could have had a more interesting exploration in their motivations and goals. Also, Chadd is a dipshit and he makes a great follower of Jinx!

just had a convo with my friend about adhd and how I might have it. AHAHA but apparently he has like, a list of people from our friend group who he thinks is adhd, and I’ve been on that list from the start. It was a very eye opening conversation and Ive kinda been wondering for a while if I might be a lil adhd (is that a good way to say it? I’m new, I don’t know terms and phrases and whatnot) but to be reassured that yes someone who has been diagnosed has noticed it in me was VERY validating. Apparently some of my traits aren’t like, normal? they be symptoms baby 😧 apparently the way I rant is very telling. (I say as I rant to you LOL) anyways, it is now 3 o’clock and I have spent 3 hours talking to this dude and my life has been questioned in the most validating way. I hope you’re doing well 🥰 (reading back on this knowing what I know about how I switch topics very quickly is funny HAHA)

as someone with adhd, i think saying “a lil adhd” is perfectly fine if you’re describing your personal experience with adhd. it’s disrespectful when someone who doesn’t have adhd says that to explain why they did something flaky. like, “omg i missed the whole movie because i was on my phone, i’m so adhd today!” or, “sorry my paper is a week late, i’ve been a little adhd lately.” those things are fine to say if you have it, and insensitive af if you’re using adhd symptoms to explain away something shitty you did

there definitely are gradations to symptoms people with adhd can experience. some people have very mild symptoms, and have learned to adjust to them and do fine without meds. some people have it so bad they can hardly function without medication. for instance, my brother has very mild symptoms. and he does fantastically without meds. he’s identified symptoms he experiences, and can adjust accordingly. he grew out of a lot of the symptoms he had when he was a kid. i, on the other hand, need medication. i can hardly focus without it. like, i KNOW when i’m being affected by it, but i can’t do a damn thing to stop it without medication

so i think it’s okay. as long as you’re describing how YOU’RE feeling

if you feel like you relate to the symptoms your friend talked to you about, it would benefit you to talk to your doctor about it. i realize going to the doctor isn’t something that’s financially possible for everyone, and if that’s the case for you, you can always look for resources online that teach you how to manage symptoms on your own

a diagnosis can be incredibly helpful, because symptoms can vary GREATLY depending on gender assigned at birth. so help identifying the symptoms you’re personally experiencing will benefit you greatly

i recommend looking at the chadd website for more info. they have a myriad of information that’s extremely helpful at all stages of your journey

So I see a lot of people saying things like “omg this person has so many mental illnesses they must be faking how could the function blah blah blah” so I’m gonna make a weird numbered rant post about why thats wrong lol. (also I know I talk about ADHD specifically in this rant but thats the one I know most about)

1. Many mental disorders/neurodivergent disorders often come in groups:

People seem to forget this for some reason, but in some cases having x disorder makes you more likely to have y disorder. ADHD, autism, tic disorders, and OCD are a few disorders that are commonly comorbid, meaning they commonly appear together. According to CHADD “More than half of all individuals who have been diagnosed with ASD also have signs of ADHD. ... On the flip side, up to a quarter of children with ADHD have low-level signs of ASD...” This isn’t just the case with ADHD and autism, anxiety and depression are two of the most commonly comorbid disorders, with an estimated 60% of people with one of them showing symptoms of the other (link). Comorbid disorders are really common, so the chances that one person has more that two or three disorders isn’t that low. 

2. Complications from these mental disorders can cause other mental disorders:

Disorders you’re born with generally cause issues, thats the point of them being disorders. Kids with already existing disabilities or disorders are often bullied, have trouble at school, have trouble at home, or deal with other forms of stressful or traumatic experiences throughout childhood. These kinds of stressors can cause things like anxiety, depression, maladaptive daydreaming, dissociative disorders, etc. To use ADHD as an example (again), The Chesapeake Center says that the the likelihood of someone with ADHD having coexisting conditions is extremely high, especially for teens and adults that don’t have treatment. “Tom Brown, Ph.D., psychology professor at Yale and internationally recognized authority on ADHD, has proposed that ADHD is a “foundational disorder” — a disorder that creates a vulnerability toward a host of other psychiatric conditions in adolescence and adulthood, especially when ADHD goes unrecognized and untreated.” They go on to say that over 70% of adults with ADHD have some other disorder that should be taken into account while working on treatment. This can apply to disorders like autism, tic disorders, and intellectual disabilities as well. Autism Connection of Pennsylvania says “Sometime there is a biological predisposition to [other mental health issues]; others may develop these conditions out of their constant struggle to cope with the world around them.” So being born with one or two mental disorders can end up developing into more issues down the line.

3. Treatment, lack of treatment, or incorrect treatment can cause other stuff to develop:

Technically like the last point, but slightly more specific. I’m going to draw from my own experiences for this point. I was born with ADHD and autism, as well as mild tics. When I was young, I was yelled at for doing certain ND things, like not speaking, stimming, not looking people in the eyes, and making certain sounds. This caused anxiety for me, as well as a need to mask at a young age to avoid being hurt. When the pandemic happened all my masking fell apart, and now I’m being treated for ADHD. My first round of ADHD meds caused my tics to worsen, and now I have them much more severe than I used too. I also have bad anxiety, depression, and some trauma stuff because of the masking, bullying, and yelling that I had endured due to my ND traits. So I went from ADHD, autism, and mild tics, to ADHD, autism, moderate-to-severe tics, depression, anxiety, and more. 

In Conclusion

Don’t be a dick, having lots of disorders isn’t insane. I’ll admit some people claim to have so many they would need a lot of help to function, and probably couldn’t be on social media, but just having more than like, two disorders isn’t a reason to fakeclaim someone.

now i believe that todd's one to move on and forgive and forget but like it takes a lot of time, but i really really wanted unhinged/chaotic todd so there's this. i made a small comic (that will probably never see the light of day again) last night where todd still sort of "sees" neil/neil's ghost and he like is living sort of normally except he still believes neil's alive lol

bUT he does get "better" (aka accepts that neil is fucking dead) and like "moves on" with charlie (chadd/chanderperry :thumbsup:) and charlie knows that todd is still pretty much in love w neil but he also loves charlie so that's great👍

anyways, one thing leads to another, todd sees neil's ghost again (and it taunts him this time) and he goes batshit crazy and drives to mr. perry's house and fucking kills him :))

Hey friend, me again! In relation to the time blindness aspect of adhd and how people with it are... well, time blind. In what way is that? Because I understand that it’s some sort of concept y’know. Like it’s a number on my phone that ticks by and sure the earth spins causing the sun to go ‘down’ and ‘up.’ But that’s pretty easy to understand as it’s just really basic math and science. Is the time blindness kind of just to the point where we focus on something else that we don’t notice or...?

The concept is difficult but I think the best analogy would be.

Non ADHDers have a ticking clock in their heads. Every second of every minute of every day, they hear the tick tock. As such, even when they’re not actively focusing on it, they have have an intuitive grasp of the passing of time.

We don’t. Our clocks stop the tik tok noise when we aren’t paying attention. It’s still ticking, but we can’t hear it.

As such, we have trouble understanding the future. For us, who knows how many tick tock away that is?

When you remember that in Zaun people are giving fresh eyeballs to a giant turtle with Silco’s tattoo on it's hand, you realize the Inx aren't a huge leap in idol worshippers for next season. Frankly these Jinx stans are downright normal compared to whatever Silco's been encouraging. Sans the elaborate acts of vandalism, terrorism, and real estate theft, they're just well organized, creative, passionate young people that discovered they like pink, blue, crop tops, and fishnets.

The catharsis of revenge brought them together and the power of music/performance art holds them down. They also seem to throw amazing raves.

It's also fun to just think about the immediate ripple effect Jinx's actions have on the zeitgeist Zaun's youth. In Chadd's concept art for Convergence alone it's like the Council bombing changed the trajectory of his life, and Jinx didn't even do that in the game.

A short account of the beautiful encounters I had during my trip below!

First, I had the enormous pleasure of meeting with the lovely @pangur-pangur!!! And I can confirm that, as everyone on tumblr already knows, she’s also the nicest, cutest, most lovely person in real life. I lucked out, and we got to spend the entire day together, and I consider that day one of the finest of my entire trip! 

Thank you for accompanying me, pangur! We chatted, ate out, etc, etc. She’s so amazing, I could have one entire week with her, that I would still want to spend more time! ;w; ♥

On the next evening, I had the enormous pleasure to eat out with 6 lovely Japanese fans, @robinshideout, @its-a-mountain, @ddigibb, @iwaeur, guramu, and @xxchaddxx!!! 

We had a blast, especially because Robin-san so graciously helped me with the translations, so thank you very much again ;o; Robin is a wonderful, beautiful cosplayer, and you should all check their work out here! 

Thank you for putting up with my blabbing, as well x3 I loved chatting with you!

Anyway, besides treating me to very yummy food, the fanartists gifted me gorgeous, heart-warming things that I took pictures of. I gave them snacks from my country, and I never expected to actually receive so many unique gifts from them, so I hope you’ll all bear with my gushing, because I want to show them off! They deserve all the attention, and I’m really lucky to own these:

From @its-a-mountain, who wrote me a lovely letter, gave me delicious gummy candy, and made these adorable fabric Thorin and Bilbo!!!

Just look at them!!!! ;~; I’m afraid of using them on my bag or phone because they might fall out, since they’re so adorable and unique! So I hung them on my wall 💕

I want to especially thank Yamada-san since it was through them that I managed to meet so many other artists! They set up a date for us to meet, and took time from their schedule to do so, and I’m eternally grateful!! It was a night to remember! ♥

Next, gifts from the lovely, talented @ddigibb!

I didn’t know they had worked on a comic! I was so happy to receive one, and it was absolutely adorable. I hope you make more of them! I’d love to buy, and read them!!

And yes, they MADE me a hobbit-themed ring. It’s adorable, very well-crafted, and so thoughtful! I even commented that I felt it was my wedding ring to fandom, lol ⭐

From @iwaeur, I got so many comics, and a lovely print! It was such a big surprise, they even translated the pages for me, which was absurdly thoughtful and useful! (and a little sad, the story was so bittersweet ;o;)

They even gave me a copy of a really funny old-style shoujo manga they made of Thorin and Bilbo, it was so great! I was truly spoiled by them ✨✨

I never spoke to Guramu-san, so it was an absolute surprise that they had made me gifts, as well! I was so humbled by it!

They gave me a copy of their comic! It’s incredibly beautiful, their style is absolutely unique, and a little bit eerie, which I actually really appreciate. I hadn’t expected, also, to tear up with the story! It was amazing, thank you for giving me the opportunity to read it. 😭😭

And, you guessed it, they MADE this really interesting and adorable sleeping Bilbo sculpture with biscuit clay, and it did get a little shaken up on the way back home, but it survived! I’ll have to groom the plants a little bit better later, but it’s just amazing how talented they are, and how generous, too!

Next, I was giving a hand-made card by @xxchaddxx!!!!

It’s a pop-up card made with original printed drawings by them, and I nearly cried when I opened it ;_; it was a stab to the heart, and I love it so so much! I’ve always admired their painting, and craftsmanship, so this was an absolute treat. 😭

Also, we had some time to grab a cup of coffee after dinner, so we exchanged a few drawings, and Chadd gave me their first fem!bagginshield drawing ;O; !!!! LOOK AT IT!!!

After that, I met up with @monzerella, who showed me to a Japanese karaoke outing, which was absolutely delightful, and we chatted the entire evening! I couldn’t believe I was meeting such an old fandom friend for the first time, after like 5 years we had promised we’d meet! It was a dream come true, and I was so glad to share thoughts with you 😭 I hope next time we'll spend even more time together!!! You’re gorgeous, and ilu!!

I also met with our own @irrealis !!!! It was great, she treated me to dinner, we salted, chatted, ate cake! I loved it! Thank you so much for the fun evening, I had a wonderful time!! Your work seems super fun, and I was super entertained by you talking about it, so I wish you the best 😁♥

I sort of wanted to draw everyone I met, but since most are shy artists just like me, I thought better of it! Trust me when I say that they were all beautiful and interesting people, and it was a great experience for me to link their internet existences to a real, biological one!

I was the luckiest doge that could ever be, and I’m so glad I could meet everyone on top of having a great holiday. Thanks to everyone who spent time with me, and invested time into making it possible! You’re all the best, and you made me incredibly happy!!! 🌟🌟🌟
