Ghost Cactus - February 2023
I am normally pretty good at identifying various cacti, but when Kathy asked what that strange-looking cactus was a little ways in the distance, I was stumped. It looked sort of like a Staghorn, but it wasn’t quite the right shape. It was behind a clump of Cholla Cactus, also know as “Jumping Cactus” for they ability to easily break off and attach to whatever brushed their spines. But it had no little segments ready to jump out onto whatever unsuspecting thing got too close. I finally decide to take a couple of good pictures and look it up later.
I spent quite a while with my cactus books and searching online and then I decided to zoom into the image and look a little closer. That is when I realized that what I was looking at was a cactus skeleton (image 2). Specifically, this is the skeleton of a Cholla Cactus. So, in a way, it is a Ghost Cactus.
