Shareholder Equity (also known as Stockholder Equity) measures a company's net worth. The amount of shareholders in which shareholders received if all of a company assets were liquidated and all its debts are repaid. Shareholders equity are recorded in company balance sheet that consists of share capital plus retained earnings .It also represents the residual value of assets minus liabilities. It can be represents in the form of accounting equation, Assets=Liabilities+ Stockholders Equity, it can also be expressed as Stockholders Equity=Assets – Liabilities. Components of Shareholder Equity The shareholders equity has the following components: - Common stock - Preferred stock - Additional Paid-up capital - Retained earning - Foreign currency translation reserve - Available for sale securities reserve - Revaluation surplus - Treasury Stock Common Stock Common stocks are shares of ownership of a company.Stockholdesrs are usually given voting rights, with the number of votes directly related to the number of shares owned and shares profits and losses after interest and preferred dividend are paid. If company gets insolvent then shareholders has to bear all the losses and creditors who lend money to the company typically must get paid in full before shareholders can receive anything from the liquidation of a company assets. Number of shares Issued by the company multiply by par value. Preferred Stock Preferred stock often more debt and differ from common stock. Preferred stock usually pays fixed dividend and the amount is higher than common shareholders. Preferred shares have a stated par value. –If the company fails the claim of preferred stock holders is restricted to the par value of the preferred stock. There are two types of Preferred stock: Cumulative Preferred stock: Dividend are accumulated each year until it is paid. Stockholders must receive all dividends earlier before common stockholders get any paid. Non-Cumulative preferred stock: Dividends are not paid in prior year and each year dividend are not accumulated. Additional Paid –up capital The value of share capital above its stated par value and item under Shareholders' Equity on the balance sheet .It is also commonly known as the "share premium". Additional Paid in capital in other words money investors paid for the shares above their nominal value. The difference between the actual price the investor paid for the company’s shares and the nominal value of the share. Additional paid up capital =Number of shares issued *(share price –par value) Retained earnings Retained earnings (also known as accumulated earnings or accumulated losses) is the amount of company profit, after dividend payments, since the establishment of the company. Retained earnings=Net income for the period-Dividends paid ± restatement on accounts of accounting policy changes or errors. Foreign currency translation reserve Foreign currency translation reserve book for the net effect on Shareholder equity when entity financial statements are changed from its functional currency to its presentation currency. Available for sale securities reserve When the company makes income and loss from available for sale of securities it is included in the net income and unrealized profit and losses i.e. if there is changes in fair value then it is reflected directly in shareholders equity. Revaluation surplus Revaluation surplus (also known as revaluation reserve) arise in IFRS financial statements and it accounts for changes in value of property, plant and equipment for which a company has adopted the revaluation model. Upward revaluation is credit to revaluation surplus and downward revaluation is debited to the account with any excess taken to the income statement. Treasury stock Treasury stock is reacquired from stockholders by the issuing that is done to reduce the total number of outstanding shares in an open market. The difference between the number of shares issued and the number of shares outstanding .It appear at cost or at par value in the shareholder equity section of the balance sheet and thus appears as a contra equity account or decreases in the shareholders equity section . When company decides to resell treasury stock, there can be no income statement recognition of gains or losses on treasury stock transactions.
