(re: "Awoken headcanons") Once again thinking about how different generations prefer different descriptors; how diaspora/emigrants make new dialects and slang; how people who are learning a new language - or grew up bilingual but aren't fluent - encounter mishaps semi-regularly and always have a story to tell because of it.
Once again thinking about how those situations might apply to Awoken who know Speech [the Awoken language] or are learning it.
Later-generation Awoken speaking differently than the original 891 and Distributary Awoken, in the same way modern Japanese differs from older Japanese.
Earthborn and Reefborn using different words for items, like how backpack can be "mochila" and "bolso" and "backpack."
Awoken Guardians practicing Speech with their friends, and every time they forget a word ("Erð þið með <bottle opener>?") or mishear one ("An eagle is stealing chickens?") or mispronounce it, they have to start over because everyone is laughing so hard.
Earthborn forgetting Speech as a way to rebel. Earthborn being told that they're "not actually Awoken" if they don't know Speech. Awoken Guardians using Speech as a way to reconnect with themselves and their heritage. Reefborn changing words in Speech to bridge the divide between Reefborn and Earthborn, to unlearn old prejudices, to remember they aren't alone in the universe and that the legacy of the Awoken extends far beyond the Reef.
Once again thinking about language. ;A;

>:) ehehehe as MJ noticed, I do in fact have a conlang in PK!! It's kinda funny—I've got like 2 different half-conlangs. i have the language of the legends that I'm working on that's an actual language with its own grammar and stuff, but it doesn't have a script, and then we got this one, the as-unnamed language of the veynon empire, which has a script but not an underlying language!
It's fun tho, this one's phonetic, and I've got lots of pages in my school notebooks where I would spend boring classes just copying out poetry in the script to entertain myself. I think it's pretty :)

That feeling when you get a plotbunny for a fandom where you don’t even go, IN A CONLANG, and you don’t have anyone who knows it so it’s just pingponging around in your brain
#I never played ar tonelico but I read LPs way back when#and once in a while my brain latches on to the worldbuilding and the SUNG CONLANG PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE OF MAGIC#(seriously that string of words is catnip for me)#and wants to do something with it#this time it’s… well whenever my brain sees 'XYZ group can’t be boys/girls because reasons' I go 'okay but consider: trans people'#so now my brain is giving me vague ideas about a trans dude reyvateil who tries to hack his Singing voice#since from what the wiki says it sounds like the Tower handles how it sounds when someone Sings#and I’m knee deep in the wiki for something I’ll never write trying to figure out what to hack and how#doesn’t help that all the Hymmnos I know is some of the emotion words#so all my brain gives me is 'holy shit if he gets to Sing the last bit in his new voice and it starts with 'was yea erra''#(which I guess gives me some extra corner points in that an IPD reyvateil needs to be involved and it’s not him since that’s standard)#(because for the change to be implemented mid Song it’d have to be executed sequentially and you can’t do that with standard)#(and if he’s the ipd he’d want his Song to have as much power as possible and not bother with emulation)#(I guess there’s a bit of plot there in that he tries on his own but fails and something something the value of community)#(maybe part of the failure is that his approach features emotion sounds that his actual feelings clash with due to his voice)#(since the change would only go through at the end)#(so I guess the patch would in part be porting the lines he struggles with to New Testament of Pastalia so the other person can take them)#(and run them as they’re Sung)#I HAVE NEVER EVEN PLAYED THE GAMES

I dug up the notes for my conlang, which I haven't needed for the main project of mine these last few years, and I can't find the possesive word. I know it exists. I remembered it. I found it in the goddamn first scene I ever used this conlang for. What I can't remember is the exact grammar rules for it beyond that it does change in certain contexts, but it exists and its not in my translation dictionary or my conjugation grid or my misc grammar notes!

Nothing like spending hours doing html hover translation text boxes to share a canon conlang with readers that canon/fanon works ALL utilize only to be told it’s annoying.
HEY BUDDY. I’m not sharing your name but if you don’t like it! Don’t read it! Don’t even comment telling me how annoying it is! Just hit the big x button in the top right corner!

Hello sweet, I am LOVING your Daemon x Reader series "Terms of Endearment" It's slowly becoming one of my favourite series on this sordid little corner of the internet. I was just wondering how you translated things into Valyrian. I'm not having much luck with the dictionaries and the translators I found, I'm afraid
Hello, hello!
Thank you very much! I'm glad you're enjoying it. Always super fun to see new readers, hahaha.
Ooooh, High Valyrian! I can see the dilemma. When I started out, I used one of those auto-translators, which are fine but don't necessarily produce accurate translations. Your best bet, unfortunately, is learning how the language system works through the official High Valyrian dictionary (which I'll link here), which the creator of the language regularly updates alongside mods as needed.
Keep in mind that High Valyrian is a language where nouns decline; that is, they need an adjustment based on the way you are using it in the sentence. There are a lot of terms involved in this and no easy way to learn it all in an instant. It's a process that took me months to do with any sort of half-valid function, and I initially relied on the assistance of someone who had learned the language properly to translate for me or check my attempts and help edit/explain before I posted.
I'd personally recommend the following:
Read the page on High Valyrian grammar. It gives you an overview of how sentences are structured (which isn't like English sentences), and what the types of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives and adpositions are. You might need to look up some of the terms used here, as it does rely on you having a foundational knowledge of linguistics to understand! I can promise you that this is possible; I knew fuck-all about this stuff before I started studying up.
Take a little look through the English High Valyrian Dictionary. It sorts your words alphabetically according to their English translation, whereas the standard dictionary organizes alphabetically by HV word (this can be really confusing unless you're good with the Ctrl + F function). Keep in mind that this page isn't as regularly updated and it is important to click on the desired word to thoroughly review the context behind the translation. Some words have the same literal translation but different contextual meaning (i.e. there are like three words for time, one being what is used to ask "what's the time?", one for a generic passage of time, one for seasonal change etc.) and you want to make sure you're using the right one!
Go to the High Valyrian Dictionary proper, which will give you an itemized list of all words created for this conlang thus far, usually with a translation, brief definition/context, and an example used in-sentence. Clicking on the word will give you the information you need in order to conjugate (adjust the words according to their usage).
I hope this helps! I've found learning HV really rewarding and fun, and I'm still learning new things and polishing up every day. Thanks for reaching out!

jdifksbfurkdbi hi hello :3 just found ur blog and i love ur commission art and the funny fellows which, if i managed to correctly absorb the lore, r the uanlikri ppl. those r cool and nice and amazing and i love em. i noticed that when u post abt them u (i assume) write the name of the individual culture with their native script of their native language? since thats my shit can i ask u to linguistically infodump abt that? thanks for ur attention and have a good [insert time of day] :)))
So the Peoples of Uanlikri is a project of mine where I aim to do at least one drawing of every cultural group* on Uanlikri, the continent depicted in the bottom corner of the little people infographics. There are other continents in this world but for my sanity I'm (mostly) not touching them.
The script besides the title is not a native script in the sense that for most of these cultures, they've borrowed it from someone else! It is the Ghøwout Script, which you may or may not have scrolled down far enough to find this little infographic I did on it.
Unfortunately for the more linguistically inclined, I haven't really dug deep into conlanging (at least not with this script) and I cannot tell you much about the Ghøwout languages, other languages which use the Ghøwout script, and how they work. I think if / when I decide to work on it more, I'll take my decisions about who uses diacritics and how much as a jumping point to decide on features of the language.
Someday I'd love to make a map of language families on Uanlikri. For now I'm treating it as though it mostly matches the cultural groups I'm drawing (which is innacurate, but must suffice).
*I've got a masters of Anthropology so I'm constantly annoyed that I'm not being granular enough, but I'm mostly managing to talk sense into myself about it, for the sake of my sanity and hopefully finishing the project someday.

BACK ON THAT GRIND!
Now that my summer has started, I can get back to posting worldbuilding and conlanging more frequently >:)
This piece in particular is for the stuff I do on the side for Disney Fairies, and depicts the Neverbeast, along with a poem about it. See under the cut for more lore on both!
During the days when this statue was new, or at the very least not a ruin, it had three brother, at each corner of a vast plaza used for an ancient precursor to the Pixie Hollow Games. This was long before fairies found the Great Tree and regained the power of flight through the abundance of magic Dust it produced, let alone the events of the movies or even the existence of Queen Clarion herself. Unlike the modern fairies, the fairies of the distant past were more aware of the various cycles of their world, and both loved and respected creatures such as the Neverbeast who protected the island from harm.
Aligning with the events of Tinkerbell and the Legend of the Neverbeast. the poem states the legend depicted in the pictograms show in the movie. The Neverbeast, known to our fairies as Gruff, wakes from his hibernation every thousand years to build four towers, one in each season, to draw in the lightning from a Hollow-ending storm that surfaces at the same time, allowing him to swiftly collect it and reverse the effects of the storm. This all occurs due to the green comet passing by Neverland every thousand years as well, and in my own lore, I've decided that the pictograms are something even older than these statues, which is why they had trouble deciphering it.
Moving on to the linguistics side of things, I'll now provide some cultural context to the language of the fairies.
Line One: The usage of the verb 'ŕeī-en' or 'to pour' is significant to how fairies view time. Their original writing systems are vertical, and this, alongside them being creatures of flight, means that they view time with the past above them, and the future below them. By describing the years as pouring out, it not only highlights the passage of time, but also makes it known that this is a reoccurring event.
Line Two: This line is one that varies between the four original statues, each comparing two sets of dichotomies. This tower compares light and dark, and life and death. While the other three are lost to time in my canon, their comparisons are as follows: grass and rain, stone and sand; mountain and valley, bird and mouse; wing and tail, head and heart.
Line Three: The word used for storm, 'eŕēipe', refers specifically to a violent or tropical storm.
Line Four: The word used for green/verdant, 'lipe', is also a word used to refer to vines, creepers, and thorns, and thus gives the color a dangerous feeling.
Line Five: Centered and Pixie Hollow(though here it does not refer to the actual Hollow in the movies, so its more of an umbrella term for the main place fairies live at any given point in time) are the same word. Do with that as you will. Like with green, the word used for clouds 'ripīēriǹ' means dark and dangerous clouds specifically.
Line Six: Doom can be translated as many other things, such as mass death, cataclysm, and fate.
Here is my initial sketch:
Tumblr media
This is not a human language, and I wanted to make it so that, like in the movies, when pitched up enough it sounds similar to ringing bells. The fairies being unintelligible to humans in the movies was my initial inspiration for making this language. Here is the poem's IPA for those that may be interested. If anyone would like an explanation of grammar feel free to DM.

Happy WBW! It's after midnight and my baby won't go to sleep. Please tell me whether you've ever invented a language for a story. Would you like to?
It's totally Wednesday!
Not only have I tried to make conlangs for my story before, I have WRITTEN A FANFICTION OF DAYCYCLE THAT WAS JUST A THINLY VEILED INFODUMP ABOUT THE CONLANG THAT I WAS MAKING AS THE FANFIC WAS GOING ALONG
Under the cut ill put the whole thing for anyone wondering. No it is not proofread and yes it is benodora
Menodora is sitting in the corner of her favorite cafe when Benjamin sits across from her one day. She’s not really that surprised. Everyone in the group chat knows her schedule.
“I need your help,” he says.
Menodora closes her laptop. “Alright.”
“My mother’s family is coming over in a couple of months. They are going to stay for the rest of the year. They do not speak Common nor do they speak fae.” Benjamin scowls at that last sentence, and Menodora takes in his annoyance. “They’re going to speak to me as if I know what they are saying even though it’s been years and they know I don’t.”
“I’d love to help you,” Menodora says, placing one of her hands on his, “However, I do not speak the northern vampire dialect.”
“I know, but most of them do know the common southern dialect. You’re fluent in that one, right?”
They must be some sort of passonist for all vampire culture then. Makes sense as to why they haven’t learned common or fae. They probably did, at one point, but let the language fade over the years.
Bonnie only learned enough to understand Menodora when she can’t be bitched to speak in common. Most of those moments are Menodora asking for water or to be taken to bed. It’d be nice to have someone to really talk to, though in a couple of months Menodora is unsure how much Benjamin could learn.
“Sure,” Menodora says. “Though give me a couple of days to organize a teaching method. And to take my test.”
Benjamin gives Menodora a smile that she swears means thank you, but he doesn’t get out of his seat to leave. “Did you already have coffee?”
“Oh, no.” Menodora holds up an old napkin. “I bought a pastry to sit here. You don’t have to buy me coffee to teach you anything, you know. I don’t mind.”
Benjamin waves a hand. “Despite what it may look like, not everything is about debts. Consider it a thing between friends.”
Friends, right. Menodora opens her laptop. “Well then, order me a black coffee.”
Tumblr media
They meet in the library five days later. Benjamin decides, for some reason, to dress up for this. Menodora isn’t complaining too much. He looks good in his sweater and dress shoes.
Right, focus.
“I’m assuming you know the basics. Like ‘Hi, hello, how are you, my name is?’”
“Nope!” Benjamin leans back in his chair. “Not in the common southern dialect at least. I know it in the northern one. My mom knew this one nodical dialect, but she mostly just used it to talk shit about my family—the one coming over.”
Thankfully, Menodora planned for this. “Okay, so we will start with that. I’m not really going to be able to teach you everything. Every southern vampire dialect is needlessly complex, and there are words and rules even I don’t know about. I can teach you to speak formally and casually, and that should be enough to get you through some conversations.”
She scrolls on her laptop to where she has copy and pasted a grammar book and then takes out a binder full of papers for him to follow along on.
“Wow, you were not kidding about needing time to prepare,” Benjamin says. Suddenly he’s reading over her shoulder. “Now, tell me why there are so many rules again?”
“Because they could. I wish I was lying, but that’s it. If you—in theory—live forever, you—in theory—have all the time in the world to learn the irregular verbs and the genders of nouns being used in a certain context.”
Benjamin looks down at the papers with disgust. “If I didn’t need this, I would be reconsidering this very hard right now.”
Menodora waves her hand. “Don’t worry. I learned a lot of it easily, and I kept learning a bit after I got kicked out. You’ll do fine. Besides, you already know a vampiric dialect, even if it has a lot of influences.”
“Jorson is hello, so formal, and jlori is literally glory but also hi informally.”
“They both come from the word glory?”
“Yeah. Back in the past vampires didn’t really interact that much, so wishing the other glory before they spoke was a good show of faith. Now it’s just a greeting.”
Benjamin takes out a loose piece of paper. “It’s similar in the northern dialect too. Though it’s spelled gloriee.”
“I swear I read a book about the

20 questions for fic writers
I was tagged by @majorbaby :3c
Tagging @dustbunny105 @lyledebeast @tirednecromancer @optimisticfruitcup @itwoodbeprefect @lukestarkillerisgay and anyone else who wants to try it out
How many works do you have on AO3?: 51
What's your total AO3 word count?: 318,236
What fandoms do you write for?: MASH, X-Men, Transformers, and Star Wars primarily, with a few other fandoms mixed in as the spirit moved me :3
What are your top five fics by kudos?: Matched Set (DBH), Turn, Turn (Sandman/Old Guard), Better Than I Know Myself (Moon Knight), Resolute (Star Wars), Expedient Means (DBH)
Do you respond to comments? Honestly not usually. It just wasn't much of a thing in the corners of fandom I came up in, so I never formed the habit or expectation. I do appreciate all comments and periodically try and go through and respond, especially to very nice ones!!
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Come and See (Hannibal) ends with murder/suicide...
What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Genuinely don't know. I feel like a lot of my fics have tonally similar endings, where they're happyish or hopeful, but there's an element of uncertainty of bittersweetness...
Do you get hate on fics? No.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Ahaha... Yee. Pretty much exclusively gay or robot sex. This year I descended fully into The Id Vortex which was genuinely a psyche changing experience in a positive ways highly recommend.
Do you write crossovers? I had forgotten the Sandman/Old Guard fic was a crossover until I looked up my fics by kudos XD
Have you ever had a fic stolen? No
Have you ever had a fic translated? No
Have you ever cowritten a fic before? No
What's your all time favorite ship? TrapHawk was a primordial OTP that has fully taken over my brain kdjdjd...
What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Only You Can Find Me or as I call it X-Men Band AU... I fully have like 4 acts outlined, and very elaborate backstories for all the characters in the AU, but it took a lot of research into really weird stuff to actually write, and it just got to be overwhelming, and I kind of lost confidence/momentum in it...
What are your writing strengths? I don't know how to describe it. I think I'm pretty solid? And I have read enough I know what annoys me and I don't do those things XD I think I generally do a good job of keeping things in character and clearly motivated, I think I do a good job setting and maintaining a tone, and I try to be pretty intentional with the scenes I write. I also am pretty fast once I get going.
What are your writing weaknesses? I have a bad habit of "listing" (and this happened and this happened and this happened), and I think I don't elide as much as I could. I also worry about being too introspective or self-indulgent, and I think I have a pretty specific writing style and I always worry my narrators sound too similar. I also do 90% of my writing on my phone so I'm locked in eternal battle with typos and autocorrect correcting the wrong thing.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I indulge in this sometimes- was having a little too much fun with the sci-fi conlangs in Star Wars fic lol. I've done it a few times in other fandoms for color, but I try and make sure that what's being said is clear in context or translated afterwards.
First fandom you wrote for? Agh, like Digimon fanfic in 2001 or something crazy XD
Favorite fic you've written? Genuinely struggled to pick one, but I think Making the Most of It was both really fun to write, really fun to read, and I am proud of how it turned out- it accomplished what I set out to write and then some...
