Father and Sons
Ao3 FFN
Summary: Clockwork is Danny's loving, adoptive grandpa. Time is the Endless' neglectful father. They are one and the same.
Chapter One: First Meeting
- - -
Dream of the Endless stepped into his father's realm and found himself alone. Neither Dream of the Cats nor Hope Beautiful Lost Nebula had come with him. This wouldn't affect him, he would carry on.
He walked down the sprawling garden and stumbled then upon a young boy wearing his father's sygil in a purple cloak, not unlike one his father might use when seen by humans.
The boy stopped dead in his tracks when he saw him, the tilted watering can still spilling its content with no end in sight.
"Uh… hello?" He asked tentatively, the can still tipped. "May I help y—?"
"Who are you?" Dream asked bluntly, straightforward, looking at this child whose identity and dreams were blurred to him, being from a different time period than him, and his father's realm not being a Soft Place nor Dream's jurisdiction.
"Oh! That's- I'm… not supposed to just give my name to strangers." He trailed off, and finally straightened the watering can. "I'll… go get my grandpa." He turned and flew away, giving the perplexed Lord Shaper one last look before vanishing from sight.
"Dream." His father's voice had him turn around and there he was, shifting in shape through ages.
A toddler, a child, an old man, a younger man, if time could truly be described as a man, but always, invariably, with a jagged scar going across his eye.
Next to him stood the boy, looking between father and son with green eyes full of human curiosity, but ultimately leaning towards Dream's father with ease.
"What do you want?" His father asked as his beard vanished to give way to a toddler's impassive face. "You only come here if you want something."
"Can't a son see his father with no motive other than to wish him well?" He asked instead of answering.
This was unscripted. As it often did with his father, being in his presence was to step in loops and whorls of someone else's design, leaving Dream wrong-footed, regardless of where he stepped.
But for that same reason a strange child trailing after his father and referring to him as 'his grandpa' would not deter him from what he had come here for.
It did make him wonder, though…
"Of course you can," Father Time was saying, "but you never do. If any of you or your siblings visit is because you need my help."
"Siblings?! How many children do you have?" The boy almost shouted in what he seemed to believe was a whisper.
Dream turned his gaze upon him, the intense cosmos in his eyes having him shrink, abashedly, behind his father's figure once again.
Dream's father closed his eyes for one second – or a dozen. Or a year, or seventy, or a century – and then opened them again and turned his head towards his companion. "Seven." Was all he said.
"Damn!"
And against anything Dream would have thought, his father smiled, small but genuine. Fond.
"As you well know, I am older than dust."
They were making their way through the garden, where some plants grew and flourished or perished or even returned to seeds as Time approached them, and his father picked two apples, one of which he handed to the boy – who was now floating after Father Time –, and the other he offered to Dream.
"I'm not hungry."
"You will be."
Dream disregarded his father's remark and ignored the proffered fruit, even as the boy happily bit into his own.
"I wasn't travelling alone." Dream said. "Why am I the only one here?"
"You were planning on bringing your friends, uninvited, to my domain, son?" His father asked, his youthful face at odds with the rotting fruit in his hands.
"Not friends, no. A cat, who is also me. And a girl."
His father held a hand to his forehead and sighed, before looking back up at Dream whilst he handed the fresh apple to… his grandson.
"What do you want, Dream?"
"Help me, father. Help me."

Chapter 17 is Live!!
(it was live like three months ago but i forgot to post on tumblr lol)
You can find it:
Here! on ao3
Here! on ff.net
Or Below the Cut if you prefer Tumblr!
Selkies bleed red.
Perhaps this discovery should not have shocked Ochako, and yet the fact remained that it did. She thought that, maybe, they might bleed some fantastical color–green or even gold. Her assumptions were wrong.
Selkies’ blood was as red as hers, or any human’s, was; she could see the evidence quite clearly as it dripped onto the parlor rug.
Tomura gripped his shoulder where he had been struck with the bullet from her father’s pistol. The bleeding was fast, and a great ugly stain spread down his shirt. Dabi and Magne had rushed forward after the shot had rang out, and were now helping him sit up from where he had fallen to the floor.
The rest of the crew that had been standing tensely in the foyer had scattered around the room. Himiko had raced over to Ochako. Izuku had crossed the room to Ochako’s father and had liberated the pistol from him. Spinner and Jin were standing by Ochako’s mother in case she tried anything, and Eri and Tsu were nowhere to be seen.
“Oh my god,” Ochako said. She had begun to shake. The sound of the pistol firing in such close quarters had left her ears ringing, and the smell of Tomura’s blood made her feel sick. “Oh my god.”
“I–” Her father began, but Ochako cut him off before he could continue.
“Why would you do that? How could you do that?: fire a pistol at someone who meant you no harm?”
Her father’s eyes flashed, and his expression hardened.
“At your age, you would not understand. He is a selkie, Ochako. Selkies are dangerous.”
“Bullshit,” Ochako muttered. “HE WAS TRYING TO LEAVE! They all were! You were just too stubborn and scared to see it!”
“Don’t you talk to me that way. I am your father.”
“You just shot someone,” Ochako repeated. Her voice had gone soft and shaky, almost like she was going to cry. “in cold blood.”
“As I said before: You are under their spell. That is the only reason that you feel any sort of empathy for that thing. Once we get him to break the spell–”
“How many times do we have to tell you? THE NECKLACE IS NOT A SPELL!” Ochako felt Himiko grab for her hand but she shook it away. If she held someone’s hand now, she would surely break down and cry. She had to remain strong to get her point across. “For your information, the necklace happens to be a courting gift.”
“From whom?” Her mother asked. Both Spinner and Jin looked at her warily.
Ochako looked back at Himiko and gestured for her to stand directly beside Ochako.
“From Himiko. She presented me with a courting gift,” Ochako said. The shaking had gotten worse as she watched both of her parents’ faces sour further. “and I have accepted.”
“Darling,” Her mother crooned at her. She sounded soft, though her face still looked pinched. “You should have told us this!” Ochako felt her heart lift for the first time during this whole ordeal. You should have told us that you two were courting! She imagined her mother would say. They–her mother and father both–would apologize, call for a doctor for Tomura’s shoulder, and then they would all sit down and converse over some tea. “There are plenty of other pretty human girls in the village! We could have arranged for something: for one to come over for a picnic of some sort while we talked with her parents! There’s no need for you to settle for something inhuman.”
And just like that, Ochako’s optimism was shattered.
She absolutely could not believe what had happened thus far today. Looking back at her childhood, she could not reconcile the loving, considerate, easy-going parents that she knew with the cruel, hate-filled people that stood before her now. It hurt her deeply to know that they would turn so quickly against someone. The thought made her nauseous.
“I believe Tomura was right,” Ochako said. “We are leaving.”
“What?” Both her mother and father attempted to walk to her, but Izuku, Spinner, and Jin held them back.
“Tomura needs medical attention, and I no longer wish to stay.” Ochako turned and walked towards the door, and everyone followed suit, Dabi and Magne supporting Tomura as they followed. Before Ochako could cross over the threshold onto the lawn, she turned back around in the doorway to get one last look at her parents. They were looking at her with sorrow and anger and something that looked similar to confusion, as if they, too, could not recognize the person that their daughter had become.
She looked around at the parlor: the destroyed furniture, the askew pictures on the walls, the mantelpiece. She noticed that of the clothespin dolls that rested on the mantelpiece–the ones that she and her mother had made together when she was about five–one of them was missing. The one that represented Ochako herself was no longer residing with the dolls that represented her parents.
How fitting, she thought to herself, as she shut the door to her childhood home.

Avatar: the Final Conflict - Chapter 18
Katara stared out across the pond to where a nest of turtleducks was hidden among the reeds. She wasn't watching them really, but they made a convenient focal point while she tried not to think about the other events of the past week. Especially not the arrangements being made for Ozai's funeral.
Ozai- deposed and forever branded as a war criminal- had still been the leader of the Fire Nation and Zuko's father. Katara tried not to be disgusted with the fact that Iroh had agreed with his advisors' insistence that Ozai be given a proper entombment. There were, after all, certain aspects of politics that she knew that even the Fire Lord couldn't refuse. She was just grateful that she wasn't expected to be at the ceremony.
Zuko was, though. He had as much reason to want to avoid it as anyone. More, in fact. Katara and the others had been at the receiving end of Ozai's indifferent cruelty, but Zuko had suffered personally at his father's hands for years. And he had been the one to order his execution in the end. What he must be feeling at the idea of attending Ozai's funeral…
Katara squeezed her eyes shut, hoping that maybe that would stop the thoughts in her head. She would go to the funeral, she already knew. She knew Zuko would need as much support as possible. She would be right at his side, if he let her.
That was probably a big if.

So, when I posted the most recent chapter of Purpose of Heritage, Fanfiction.net was having a bunch of issues -- I couldn't get to my profile using the website, but could with the mobile app, etc. Anyway, I did wait to post until the site was back up because getting things formatted properly on the app was borderline impossible. But I'm now questioning if email alerts went out only because I have at least three readers on FFN who comment literally every chapter and a couple more that comment every few chapters, and no one has commented on this most recent one. Like, it is possible they just all didn't comment collectively over the past week for some reason, but it seems unlikely, you know? I'm just like...what even do I do about this? Or do I just let it be?

part of updating the five dragons means that the chapter count of the original fic keeps going down as short-ish chapters get subsumed into larger ones. Originally the chapter count was at 30 something but now it’s at 25.
I have picked up an extremely funny guest reader with an excellent commitment to the bit. As far as I remember, fanfic dot net doesn’t send out emails when chapters are replaced, and also, this is a guest, so it’s not like they’ve got an email tied to their account anyway, meaning it’s very impressive that they manage to be there pretty quick whenever the chapter count goes down again.
The first review they left was on chapter 27, and they said ‘excited for chapter 28’. Then the chapter count went down. So on chapter 26 they said ‘excited for chapter 27’. I updated again last night, taking the chapter count down again, and true to form 3 hours ago they said they were excited for chapter 26.
I think what I’m getting at here is you really don’t have to say much in a comment. This guy hasn’t said anything about the chapters I’ve been posting! But they manage to be there really fast anyways, every time the chapter count goes down, continuing a bit and also expressing excitement for the future. It… kind of means a lot. They have to be checking pretty often to catch my updates.

What Dreams May Come
I originally wrote this in 2012. My inspiration was vaguely that one Nicholas Cage film, but I never actually saw it, so the inspiration was the trailer from that one Nicholas Cage movie. I wanted to have Zuko encounter some spirit world shenanigans, because I don't think there is enough of that. I also wanted to have Zuko have a glimpse of something hopeful for his future. I think this is the only story I've ever written that even obliquely touches on Taang. It's not a ship I particularly care for, to be honest. I think Toph could do much better, but back when I wrote this story, I thought it was a convenient way to get Aang out of the way for Zutara. I would have made a different choice if I wrote this story today, but I'm still happy with how this fic turned out.
