Humans can perceive variations in intonation in the voices of their pairs. A dog also hears frequency fluctuations with even greater precision than we do.

When a dog barks with its skillful tongue, it slightly changes the frequency of its call to produce words and verbs that, when assembled, create a sentence. Our human hearing only distinguishes a restricted spectrum of wavelengths so we have the impression that these barks of the canids are all identical. This is far from the truth.
