i’m sure i’m not the first to say something like this, but let me tell you about my poc-passing-as-white jay gatsby headcanon!!
for some background, in the 1920s there was an interesting shift regarding (white) skin tones. previously, tans were viewed as a sign that a person worked out in the fields, and therefore a trademark of the lower class. however, slowly after the industrial revolution, it increasingly became a representation of luxury, since the rich upper class would have the time to lounge about and sunbathe at their leisure.
i say all this to show that a poc gatsby would have the ostensible class and wealth for a tan, which would ‘excuse’ a slightly browner skin tone in the public eye.
(the 20s was also the setting of passing by nella larsen, so that’s neat.)
in my vision, he’s biracial (maybe his mother was black & his father was a german immigrant) with skin light enough to pass for white.
the fact that nick states that gatsby keeps his hair neatly groomed and cut might be to prevent it from curling up.
additionally, i think it could contrast tom’s white supremacy & his fear of poc social progress.
it would also create a deeper divide between gatsby and daisy, and once again the contrast between him and tom. in my mind, daisy wouldn’t know about it until the point where tom reveals everything about gatsby’s bootlegging etc. with jay revealing it to her in the car ride back (oops then she hits myrtle).
then, when she chooses tom and the life of comfort, wealth, status, etc that their marriage offers, she also rejects not only gatsby’s new money but also his race.
it’s a lot more thematically significant for the american dream as well—it’s still unattainable and essentially tainted by capitalism, and it also emphasizes that it’s restricted to the white upper class. social mobility only becomes available to gatsby when he disguises his racial identity.
similarly, it fits with gatsby’s identity reconstruction—the quintessential american is white, rich, and educated.
daisy and tom have that ticket into society because they have that inherent thing that he will never have—pedigree, in both class and race. that’s something that even nick has.
(in my mind, he tells nick all about it the night before he dies & nick understands as best he can and doesn’t think less of him, because it further highlights the differences between his & gatsby’s relationship v. gatsby’s relationship with daisy; namely, the transparency -> acceptance give-and-take that he and daisy never had. because of having to hide himself from daisy in order to maintain her affection, he builds an expectation that he must be someone that he is not as well as developing a transactional definition of love (he gives, and people love him as long as he can continue to give) in order to be loved. therefore, nick’s immediate curiosity and fascination with who he truly is is foreign to him. not to get too into their dynamic lmao i just think it’s really interesting.)
finally, the very last part where nick is sitting and looking at the bay and thinking about the first immigrants and their dreams and how gatsby embodied the purity and naivety of those dreams is further exemplified by his racial ‘otherness.’
and there’s,,, technically nothing in the book to explicitly refute this from what i remember!
(n.b.: it has been a hot second since i’ve read tgg, so lmk if i’ve got anything wrong!)

another comic based on @sm0kebreaks' night street AU! this one's directly inspired by a silly discussion where daisy drives jon home (this is a thing, apparently?) and martin gets caught up; it's his first time actually meeting daisy, since he doesn't go to jon's school
unfortunately daisy doesn't seem to think much of him... maybe she is a just bully after all...

Sighing in disappointment as I'm listening to a new (for me at least) Agents of Shield podcast where the podcasters agree with Fitz when he throws the whole "Do you want me to tell you how many times you've betrayed us?" in season 5.
Sighing in MAJOR disappointment.
I've agreed with a lot of what they have said about the show thus far, so I was hopeful that they would defend Daisy, but there is little to no defense on Daisy's side. Not giving me faith for the remainder of season 5 in regard to this subject.
Here's your daily reminder that Fitz did potentially paralyzing, nonconsensual surgery on Daisy while she was still awake, without any pain killers, traumatizing her, and never felt any remorse for what he had done to her while also victim blaming her, saying she deserved it after """betraying""" the team """so many times""".

i am still going through the horrors but i made an au!!! it’s a squirrelflight au called the crush au, where she stays with ashfur. nightcloud doesn’t divorce crowfeather but does NOT like him (staying together for breezekit’s sake), crowfeather knows about the three’s existence but doesn’t give a darn about them, and squirrelflight still takes the kits and tells ashfur they’re his, as she did with brambleclaw.
ashfur is a controlling piece of fox dung to squirrelflight, as one could expect from him, forcing her to fit in the role of a loving wife and mother so he can live his white-picket-fence dream. squilf finds solace in talking to nightcloud at gatherings about their shitty mates, and the two become friends. they start to sneak out to see each other and talk with each other, and become besties. this was a thing from my other tumblr draft about it that i haven’t posted yet which essentially is them.
Tumblr media
ashfur eventually gets worse to squilf, and leafpool knows it’s not good but it really sets in when jaypaw, her very new apprentice, mentions it. leafpool is very upset and gets squilf to tell firestar and sandstorm. she eventually gets support and leaves ashfur and he seems chill about it, but he is Not. he’s essentially stalking her, and wuh oh nightcloud and squirrelflight, eventually, become secretly romantic crowleaf style (at this point nightcloud divorced crowfeather, and this takes place a while later as squilf needs to heal and repair her mental state before jumping into another relationship). ashfur snaps because “only i can have her” weird shit. fire scene!!!! but, it is different. ashfur plans it more carefully, a lot more. he wants to take away everything squirrelflight ever loved, so he can be the only thing she can love. it’s not as much revenge like it is in canon but an attempt to destroy her further so she only has him left. the fire scene is essentially the same, with the exception of nightcloud being there rather than squirrelflight. and instead of the classic “they’re adopted lol” bit, breezepelt pops out of nowhere and literally up and attacks ashfur, and the others get to escape. i have no clue how i’m gonna get nightcloud there but i will FIGURE IT OUT, breeze just follows nightcloud. I PROMISE THIS IS COOL AND MAKES SENSE THIS IS A RLLY CONDENSED VER. OF THE AU
ashfur lives and he gets a cool scar from the fire, and he goes “ugh fine you know what. HEY EVERYONE SQUIRRELFLIGHT ATTACKED ME AND SHES DATING NIGHTCLOUD” but nightcloud, i love her, is a stubborn lady that takes no shit, and essentially argues with ashfur at the gathering. starclan is pissed and does the moon cloud cover thing, but the clans remain at the gathering. crowfeather gets upset at nightcloud, nightcloud is sticking to her morals and taking no shit from ashfur, ashfur is just an asshole, squilf is two moments away from a panic attack and leafpool is considering murder, you know how it is. some stuff happens that i haven’t figured out, but eventually nightcloud and breezepaw go to thunderclan. why? i think it’s an adorable found family idea LOOK AT THEM.
that’s my wip half-done au that is not developed at all but i love the idea and am going to be doodling and developing it over the next few weeks ^^
#warrior cats#vix talks#warriors discussion ready set go#ashfur#squirrelflight#leafpool#nightcloud#crowfeather#nightsquirrel#wc crush au#tw abuse#tw manipulation#ashfur is a dick in this#and it sounds exaggerated when condensed like this but his behavior is gradual and rooted in control#and he will go to any length to keep it#ashfur is also pushy with his kids. in this au he’s actually the one who convinced jay to be a medcat even tho he didn’t want to#the nightsquirrel is NOT the main point of the au!!! it’s a squilf-centric au!!!!!#nightcloud is not purely a love interest she’s also a good cat that supports squilf. that is important here#i’m tempted to add daisy to the mix but idk how yet#it’s called the crush au because idk i thought it was a cool name#btw it’s not important like at all but nightcloud has a russian accent#and her design is kinda like the one with the FANGS#the au also ends when the 3 and breeze are like 8 moons old#a lot of this starts before the 3 i didn’t know how to word it#bc it’s canon squilf went back to warrior duties really quickly she was allowed to go to gatherings#and she and nightcloud first became friends when their kits were like 2 moons old#when leaf hears from jaypaw about ashfur jay is like a FRESHLY made apprentice#also this is also because i wanted to put emphasis on ashfur’s obsession with a white picket fence american dream lifestyle#also sometime during this nightcloud figures out the 3s parentage but idk when why or how yet#btw boyfriend by dove cameron and baby bride rag by roar were huge inspos for this au

Daisy and Basira's relationship is such a sweet agony, because at its foundation it's so transparent, so honest. They both know what they're doing, however much they pretend to lie or hide it. Such is the situation they're in that there's no choice but to cling to eachother.
Have you ever been in that sort of situation? The type where the closest person to you is deeply morally flawed and you're realising just how in the wrong you are, but their hand is the only one to grasp. You see the claws along their fingertips and you turn your head and hold them close.
On many occasions Basira talks about the wrong Daisy's done, she knows where Daisy's kill spot is, she figured that's where Jon would be. And yet she never tries to convince everyone that she's capable of fixing daisy, because she knows she's not. Daisy knows this just as well, and perhaps it's a foundation of their trust.
To be loved is to be changed but to be changed is to be hated; a relationship where you accept each others flaws is a commodity, and a rare one at that. Whether those flaws are mundane or deeply damaging, these kinds of connections have a tendancy to grow beyond the point of return.
To know that you're in the wrong together is a comfort. It's not good, nor is it right, but it's a place you can sit. A place you can stay. And as your comfort grows so does that leeching wrongness you protect, and in the end it may just eat you up.
To continue the way Daisy and Basira did was what drove them towards their end, but even at that last painful moment there was a tenderness, a rose in the thorns that makes the wounds worthwhile.

So, I read this book... Daisy Jones & The Six
so, i've been thinking about doing a thing, and maybe someone finds it interesting, or maybe it's just for me to order my thoughts and i'll get bored to it before march, but we'll see. basically, for the last two years i've been keeping track of the books i read (or audiobooks i listen to) bc i felt like i'm not reading enough (except for fanfiction). and while i'm far behind people who actually read a lot, and woefully behind how much i used to read when i was a teen, i'm actually pretty happy with the progress. made it to 34 in 2022 and 40 in 2023, and hope to get more done this year. 2024 is starting off strong, just finished my first book of the year, and usually when i do that, i have thoughts. so what's the point of blogs if not to put that out there, so it stops haunting my head? or maybe even get someone else's thoughts on things? so i decided to blog about the books i read (unless i forget or don't feel like it), starting with general feelings and then going into spoilery feelings. so, yeah, this is what this is going to be. let's go.
Tumblr media
Summary: a look back on fictional rockband The Six rising to fame, where they meet It Girl Daisy Jones, leading to the collab of a century, until the band breaks apart after one show in Chicago. Told completely in interview snippets.
General Feelings: say what you want, it's a fast read, and it's fun. the style of writing with everything being interview snippets, aka the band members' and friends' memories, works really well, especially the parts where one person remembers things, and the next person directly contradicting their memory. it's a quick way to give you everyone's point of view, and sowing the seeds of miscommunication and conflict. the story is easy to follow, and it's also easy to feel for most of the protagonists. the characters are likable enough, and their conflicts are mostly realistic. the final show in chicago and the general fall out unfortunately fall kind of flat for me. like... this is it? it's not much of a bang, tbh... which maybe sums up my feelings about the whole thing. it's a fun ride, but at the end, it's like "huh, guess that was it?" it is fun, but it's just not very deep, i guess. although the way they describe the songwriting process and the songs that result from it really was cool to read. another fun fact, i totally forgot there's a show until i googled the book cover. and since i was reading and caught myself wanting to check out the songs, only to remember they're not real... well, that might be enough motivation to check out the show. Recommendation: yes, i'm doing that before the actual feelings part cause i can't discuss those without spoilers. so, if anybody cares, rec first. Daisy Jones & the Six is a casual read. like, vacation book. for the beach, for train rides, for flights. it's fun to breeze through, but i doubt it'll really grip most people. so yeah, not a must read, but can be fun, light reading.
Spoilery feelings:
(consider yourself warned)
there are a few things that really didn't work for me.
i never really got into the whole daisy/billy thing. like, his instant antipathy, the weird rivalry, and then her oh so deep love for him, and at the end, him finally kinda sorta loving her but loving his wife more... maybe that's part of the format. both of them looking back at it from the future, where it's just not that present anymore. but it didn't ring that true.
my biggest problem was probably drug use and how it was handled. it just felt so trivial and meaningless. like sure, for both billy and daisy it's supposedly the central struggle, but it just fell so flat for me. i know part of that is that early december i read Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo, which (in germany) is a famous non-fiction account describing the fall into heavy drug use of an extremely young girl (starting at 12, i think), and it's the bleakest thing i've ever read, with the girl herself describing how she fell into heavier and heavier drugs, paid for by prostitution. so it's dark, and it's heavy, and compared to that the drug use in Daisy Jones feels almost offensive in how little weight it has. the comparison is super unfair, i know, i'm primed and biased, sure. but after that, the book may say a million times "oh yeah, that was a bad time for daisy", but it just doesn't ring true.
i'm not sure if the identity of the interviewer is supposed to come off as a twist? like, sure, i didn't see it coming, but it didn't really have an impact, either.
lacking impact is probably my final point. while the book, especially with the format of the interviews, is really good at painting the conflicts within the group, i didn't feel like these paid off in a significant manner. like, eddie's whole growing resentment never went anywhere except being a red herring. the show in chicaco wasn't that special in the end, was it? nothing happened at the show himself. just, the band broke at many different places at once, but they barely impacted each other. billy's struggle with addiction toppling over, daisy having a breakdown and camila helping her through it, pete getting married, the karen/graham thing exploding... like, you could see them coming, but the resolution all at once felt kinda random. like, it didn't feel like there's this big bang setting off all the dominos (yeah, mixing metaphors, i know), but more like "oh yeah, that's all happening now, i guess". sure, there isn't always a big bang, but i feel like they teased one, and then there was nothing. so i guess the end feels a bit anticlimactic, like it just fizzled out.
it was still fun to read, but more like meaningless fun, i guess. definitely preferred "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo", which was super fun. interesting writing style, but story is a bit shallow. okay, now i talked enough about a book i kinda sorta liked but wasn't super impressed by. anyone else thoughts about it? did you read it? did you watch the show? do you or did you have feelings about it? seriously would love to hear them!

Ch196, Flower language
I was wondering about this image:
Tumblr media
Then @chainsaw-to-the-heart mentioned it in the comments on the earlier spoiler post about him and got me hopping to it! 😆
When -- Theodore, is it? -- enters the scene, he's shown with what look like Gerbera daisies and either rose hips or something more like hawthorn haws. Possibly blackthorn haws. As far as Japanese flower language is concerned, I found meanings for the Gerbera daisies -- optimism -- and hawthorn -- hope.

like... daisy ending up in the coffin is significant. it's not just to be ironic. it being her "first encounter" with the entities after becoming an officer is significant. the fact her former partner - someone whose apathy and brutality as an officer she understood and sympathized with - is taken into the coffin isn't just scary because it could have been her, but because they end up in there for the same reasons. it's about the crushing, inescapable weight of what she's done, knows is unfair and awful, but does anyway.
daisy doesn't realize what she's been doing for most of her life is wrong just because she gets trapped in the buried; it isn't, like, detoxed out of her, affording her Sudden Clarity. and it isn't that she's forced to change, either. that she's made to suffer long enough that ~moral goodness~ manifests, as if that's how you become a better person, you just have to get what you deserve enough... the buried didn't MAKE daisy "good" or "regret" what she'd done - it's just that everything finally caught up to her. daisy was already afraid of herself and the things she'd done. she's been afraid at least since the first time she saw the coffin.
the buried is a fear that can represent the feeling of being trapped under so much Something that there is no way you can ever see yourself escaping it. the things daisy has done throughout her life are not done without consequence. in the past, she was always able to outrun it for this or that reason: luck, cleverness, a system that protected her, a partner that enabled her, etc. but it meant daisy had to keep running. keep feeding it and keep killing. keep digging the hole. nothing forced her to do it; you can argue quite a lot of things encouraged her behavior, but daisy admits it herself: she liked it. she was good at it. it's always been a part of her and that's what's scary.
and even when daisy gets rescued and is out of the coffin, is she? the weight is still there. she's still being crushed by it and there's still nothing she can do to escape it. the only difference between then and now is that daisy refuses to try running from it.

i love s4, and im enjoying listening to it with the magaday, but i forgot it would also lead to the worst thing: seeing people interpret media differently than me on the internet OTL
#NOT a big deal#but as an enjoyer of nuance and complicated characters and the tragedy of people doing their best and still failing#I can't help but want to constantly correct posts saying 'Georgie said she prefered Jon dead!' (she didn't#; Jon accused her of that and Basira asked her to leave before they could talk it out)#and 'everyone is blaming Jon for Tim and Daisy's deaths' -> only Melanie is‚ as far as we've heard;#not that everyone is being nice or fair to jon; not at all#but this framing of the situation as jon on one side and everyone else on the other is just so much more boring#than the web of relationships and mistakes and misplaced blame that is implied#and the former is how you get analyses that are objectively wrong like 'no one let Jon speak in 199!!' -> literally by word count and#time spend speaking he talks the most out of anyone in the discussion#but it's not 50/50 jon/others because every character in tma is the protagonist of their own story#like of course it wouldve been nicer if georgie had immediately protested that she didn't want jon to die#but playing that out in my mind; it feels like exactly the kind of argument that jons ex specifically would be tired of having#even if the context is different now#and to me the way it's possible to construct these unspoken reasons and stories for the side characters is the coolest shit#and that's lost if Georgie just said 'I hoped you died Jon‚' because... ? because it's s4 so everyone is just mean to Jon?#even though she's the one visiting him in hospital in the first place?#joos yaps#delete later#nah she's just a mean girl. mean women bullying jon all season#nothing more to it than that

JIB6 (JIBCON 2015) POOP EXPLOSION STORY ANALYSIS
Daisy anon requested for a cockles analysis so here is one:
misha says that he had a dream of maison having a poop explosion. the story is quite adorable if you forego the poop exploding and being on the walls and everywhere. he says he doesn't know how to refer to "poop explosion" in italian and jensen says that it's a "blow out".
anyway, the interesting thing about his narration is when he says "the amazing thing about the dream is that i woke up and i was like *gasps* awww *looks at jensen and jensen's expression is like look at this sap* i miss her" and misha barely finishes saying "i miss her" before jensen repeats "i miss her" with the exact same expression misha had while saying it. like sir, were you there to witness it?
after jensen says that it gets awkward between them and they can't even look at each other. misha tries to say something but jensen interrupts by saying "misha shared me with that...he shared that with me..." the last part is inaudible but it sounds like he says "he shared that with me after he woke up."
so if misha shared that story with you after he woke up and you knew the exact expression he had on his face does that mean that the two of you were asleep right next to him or?? like what are you saying mr. jensen ross ackles?
the way misha looks at jensen after he utters those words is like, sweetheart are you crazy or what? i shared you with what now?
to redeem himself for almost getting caught revealing that he actually shares a bed/sleeping quarters with his co-star he says "i'm gonna just hang out" and sits down. misha also takes a seat and they move on to talking about how as a parent, your kids' poop doesn't bother you.
my take away from this is that yes, jensen was there when misha woke up, whether they were in bed together or wherever misha was sleeping at that moment, jensen was there with him and he listened to misha bemoan missing mais and that's how he knew about it. the fact that he got tongue tied while telling us about the story, which was not his story to tell anyway, is proof that they were together in a not so innocent situation when it happened. to make it even juicier it's the fact that he got tongue tied after the “he shared me” bit. if it was all innocent misspeaking why did he get all awkward about it? and why did he feel the need to add that part when no one asked him? i mean misha could've easily said, as they often do, "i was telling jensen the other day of this dream i had about maison" in that context if jensen had interjected, i wouldn't have batted an eye but the fact that he inserted himself in the story of his own volition, gets tongue tied and then they both get awkward is very telling and cocklesy in and of itself.
and there you have it, the day jensen involuntary revealed that he sleeps next to misha and knows about all his dreams.
