CHAPTER 04 ;; _________ ׂׂૢ་༘࿐

The afternoon of sunset rays over the both of you, Wonyoung talks with her calm tone while strolling at your sluggish gait. The trail you two walk on is lengthy enough to make anyone feel at ease.

The birds convey to one another, and trees move in slow motion. The sounds of students still sitting on benches laughing or reading by their own will. And the icing on the cake, the academy, the outstanding tower, staring right at us.

All this is everything you ever wanted. It is just unimaginable. For some reason, you feel comfortable in this atmosphere. Wonyoung makes it even better with the company of herself. Even if you had the most nonsensical questions to ask now, you could forget them because this instant was your moral.

WY: You all right?

Wonyoung speaks, catching you off guard for a second.

You: Yeah. Just getting used to all this. You know.

She beams at your retort. Your uncommon demeanor from earlier worried Wonyoung even if you gave reassurance that you were okay. She still wonders if there's still an issue upsetting you. She doesn't pressure you at all for speaking up. It's your pick in the end if you tell her or not.

WY: Don't worry, I get it!

You look at Wonyoung only to see her gummy smile already beaming at you. You can't help but smile too.

She's the most endearing human ever. She cares so much for somebody she just met.

The stroll continues for a few minutes when Wonyoung's voice catches your attention again-

WY: Y/n!

Her voice scarcely staggers you-

You: Yeah?

Wonyoung takes hold of both your hands-

WY: Let me show you one more thing!

With that, the tall girl pulls you into a speed walk to the last attraction from the school.

The sounds of exhaustion fill the air. Wonyoung and You panting after dashing to someplace you haven't even stared at yet. You're bent down, hands on knees, trying to take deep breaths.

WY: We're here!

She lets out excitingly as she takes some steps onwards.

You still try catching your sporadic breaths. What another average day of being asthmatic.

WY: C'mon Y/n. Look!

You recover yourself and lift yourself from your breathless state. Your attention shifts to your roommate's voice, and your eyes momentarily widenening in amazement.

...

You: Wow.

These are the only words that can escape from you-

The scenery of a replete blossom garden blinks from your eyes.

You move closer to all the baby pink blossoms, touching all of them. The scent reaches your nose. The aroma of freshness makes you feel so much more wakeful.

You: This is beautiful, Wonyoung.

You admit while selecting one to bring to your snout, instantly putting you in a squeal.

WY: I know!

She says happily-

WY: It's been here for centuries, and it never gets old.

You still roam around the grassland. While the sun still shined, you spot a stone pew beneath a floral arch. It just gets sounder.

You take a seat on the unexpectedly cozy pew. Wonyoung roams around just like you.

WY: Y/n! Are you thirsty?

You gulped.

Your poor throat parched from all the formidable work from today.

You: Extremely!

WY: Okay. Wait here!

She runs off in the distance, earning a chuckle from you.

Probably off to find some water.

You close your eyes, taking in the fragrance again.

Ah, Lakewood High...

You: Thank you so much. I appreciate it a lot.

Wonyoung gives bottled water she got from one of the vending machines nearby. You guys eventually walk back to your shared dormitory.

Wonyoung, taking sips from the bottled water.

WY: It's a pleasure.

The evening sky shimmering over you both. With the echoes of owls and the chirping of crickets, the academy still lit up from a distance. There's a slight uneasiness in the way the wind blows. It's quiet. Too quiet. And not in a good way.

...

Wonyoung freezes.

WY: Stop.

...

Wonyoung puts her hand out to stop you from walking any further. It was like some reflex when you quickly moved your hand to your mouth to stop making any sound. Your eyes stay expansive as you peek at Wonyoung. Sh- She looks so nonhuman and different. No matter how dark it was, you could swear her eyes were glowing. And no, it wasn't Wonyoungs normal eyes. You're not that weary to imply that out yourself. It was a blood-red glare that just glared at something.

You would be fibbing if you said you weren't terrified at what stood next to you yet ahead of you.

You: Wony-

She stops you mid-sentence and pulls you to a nearby tree. You stare at her up and down. She's breathing heavily in front of you. Both of her hands are on your shoulders. She closes her eyes as she's sleeping. The warm sensation hits your chest again. You hold your necklace tightly with your fist, fending the luminous chain.

You: Wonyoung... Are you okay?

You ask in uncertainty.

Your voice gets a snappy response from her.

WY: Yeah. I'm fine.

She lies, trying to feign a smile.

You: Ouch!

You whine in pain as you grab the side of your throbbing head.

What is happening to me?

Wonyoung tries to hold you before you fall. This feeling that you felt before. It wasn't also out of the blue. But it occurred when danger was nearby.

WY: Your necklace... Y/n.

You still hold your head at the discomfort of it.

You: What did you see, Wonyoung?

Wonyoung is stressing more about you than whatever she witnessed earlier.

WY: I'll tell you later. We need to get you back to the dorm. Now.

You're seated on your mattress, holding a wet towel against your head to soothe your hot, flushed head. You are lost deep in your thoughts. You are dreading to even look at your roommate now.

Whatever she was, you know she's not anywhere close to human. As you still overthink, a sudden cough makes you bounce.

You turn to see Wonyoung with a glass that looks to be some tea.

You: You scared me.

Softly chuckling and fake smiling to yourself, all to ease your disturbed mindset.

Wonyoung noticed your scared aura by the lack of eye contact you gave her. She takes some steps forward to sit down next to you.

WY: Please don't be scared of me, Y/n. I'm not like one of them.

She concedes while handing the warm libation in your hand.

You gladly take the drink but confused about what she's stating.

You: What are you trying to say, Wonyoung?

She wavers for a second, debating whether to tell you or not. But there would be no point masking after everything you saw happen tonight.

...

WY: I'm a vampire, Y/n.

...

Did I hear that correctly, or am I imagining things?

Your necklace starts igniting up once again, catching the attention of both of you.

WY: Your powerful, Y/n. And they are after it.

You stay hushed for a while.

You: Who's they?

Wonyoung seems to wanna leave the discussion but pulls through for you.

WY: Soobin.

Goosebumps.

You: You can't be serious?

WY: The boys you met from last night are the ones that are protecting, Y/n. And me.

Everything starts adding up now, from the invite, the party, and even you getting saved. The dots all converge now.

WY: We know your power, Y/n. And we all are going to shield it.

You take your own time to process the confession. I'm the protection...

The necklace being warmer than before, you grab on it.

Holy.

The pendant extends excessive power.

You lay under your covers, staring at the bright moon from outside. Wonyoung fell asleep after the chat with you as you lay fully open-eyed from the incessant thoughts duplicating in your head.

You turn to look at the clock that feels like it's been pulsing for hours on end.

01:30 in the morning. How nice.

Turning your body and gaze back to the glistering moon.

...

You hold the cold chain against your chest.

I swear I'll find out what's happening. No matter what happens to me.

The urge to sleep wasn't hitting you anytime soon.

Until...

At the corner of your eye, a shadow figure standing tall on your balcony makes you gasp for air. You shoot up at the sight of it.

Squinching and rubbing your eyes, assuring yourself you saw clearly.

It's gone.

...

Huh?

You start scouring your dorm in case some shadow figure comes from behind you.

You look over to Wonyoungs sleeping state and sigh to yourself.

You are about to do the dumbest and most ridiculous thing ever...

Forgive me, Wonyoung.

You wander carefully on the path you walked with Wonyoung that afternoon.

It looks way creepier at night, that is.

The twigs snap, the leaves crack against your shoes, mixed with the night animals. It sends all ilks of quivers down your spine.

You held your flashlight as your life depended on it.

All your anxieties soon washed away as you met with the academy lights.

Thankfully, the school still keeps its lights on.

Wasting no time, you turn off your torch to dodge getting seen. You rush to the doors, sprinting.

You open the academy's doors slowly. The chandelier hits your vision.

This staircase still surprises me every time.

You walk in the direction of the forbidden library. Taking all the right turns and making sure hallways are empty. The directions of Wonyoung are still new in your mind.

Found you.

Stepping closer to the library, standing in front of it now, you take one more look at the sign and back inside the dark room. It looks incredibly eerie.

Your fearless Y/n. You're not afraid.

Entering the dim room, you roam through all the books on the shelves. Searching for the history of this school sounds like step one to your investigation. Jumbling through books and putting them back wasn't beneficial at all.

You tread to the second floor, verifying that you are still the only one present. You walk to different corners. The second floor being mostly grubby and cluttered.

Please. Just give me a hint.

The moonlight gleams on one of the bookshelves. It's by an immense window that overlooks the gardens that held the blossoms you visited with Wonyoung. If someone wanted to watch you from here, it's a whole view they'd be getting.

Your footsteps resonate through the entire floor. The top of the bookshelf, shining from the moonlight, is a book.

That's the one!

Grabbing one of the chairs from the library desks, you push it towards the shelf to stand on to boost your height.

You reach out to get the radiant book, nearly thriving in an endeavor. Whining at the lengths of it.

You: Got it!

???: Now give it to me.

You're kidding me...
