Day Forty-Eight
The quarter ended today! That went by really fast!
As a thank-you, our admins bought coffee and breakfast treats, which was nice. I started the day by grabbing some from the main office. Then I went about cleaning my classroom, making photocopies, grading work as it came in, all of that.
When my first Global Studies students arrived, I took attendance and got them ready to finish the video about that hajj they'd started watching yesterday, but then Mrs. R came over to cover for me while I went to a meeting.
The meeting was heavy, but mercifully short.
I returned to my classroom before the bell, and did my best to shake it off. By that time, my students had finished the video and moved on to an assignment about how Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have impacted different aspects of culture. That went incredibly well in all four sections of the class, and it's especially fun because one of the questions in the assignment uses a picture of my older brother (showing terrible manners while deployed to Iraq because he didn't know any better). Students always like that.
In APGOV, we discussed the Bill of Rights because the SCOTUS cases they're learning about in this unit are all related to civil liberties. Initially, students did have many questions, but the more we discussed, the more they asked, which was cool. When we got into looking at specific cases, I started off by introducing them to Tinker v. Des Moines with a couple video clips from PBS and the ACLU. Then I had them read the Oyez explainer about that case and six other cases: Engel v. Vitale, Wisconsin v. Yoder, Schenck v. United States, Gideon v. Wainwright, New York Times Company v. United States, and Mcdonald v. Chicago. More lessons involving those next week.
I went bounding through the halls at 2:40 to get my cacophonous friends because we'd made plans for celebratory pizza and stuff since we all survived a quarter. Some of the newbies joined us, but not Mr. C, so he and I will have words on Monday. This job is way easier if you have back-up, and if you have fun together, rather than working too late at your desk and then going home.

A teacher at a Montessori school once described his first week as a teaching intern:
He showed up and they said, "Great! Build us a bookshelf." "But I'm here to teach." "Yeah, we know. Build a bookshelf for the 8-year-old class." "But..." "Trust us."
Two days later he was taking five kids on a field trip to the hardware store...and teaching them how to measure, add fractions, what a right angle is, and the "magic" of the Pythagorean Theorem. At the end of the week those kids knew that math underpins the world on a very real level. And they had a new bookshelf.

the last book grandma ever read was agatha christie's "murder on the orient express," which was also the first book my mother remembers getting from her as a gift and not a hand-me-down from her siblings.
one of her favorite 'isms' was 'all things in moderation,' but she also had a plaque in the kitchen when my aunts were growing up that read "you have to kiss a lot of horny toads before you find a prince" and another tchotchke that featured a cherub swinging on a length of twine that said "when you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot and HANG ON." like every nonna on earth before her, she ushered us to dinner with a "mangia" - which was also what it said on her favorite apron.
the last picture taken of her was her first picture with her great-granddaughter ellie, who's two months old and named after her. it was the first and only time they met.

Day Forty-Eight
First quarter is over! Woohoo!
I was really busy during flex block because I was helping students who were revising papers, retaking tests, etc... And I was simultaneously overseeing the first meeting of the school’s new debate club (some of my seniors asked me to be the advisor, I said sure). Really, it was just a planning session, so I was able to work with other students while it was going on; the ten or so kids who were really interested in starting the club gathered to figure out how they wanted to run the meetings, topics they wanted to debate, how to advertise to get more members. I checked in every few minutes, made some suggestions, set up a space in Classroom for them. It’s very cool.
I was also really busy during my prep time because I was grading aforementioned retakes and revisions, fielding questions from parents, putting report card comments in PowerSchool, all the usual things. I managed to get it all done, though, so I didn’t have to stay late on a Friday. Go me.
The end of the quarter is most exciting for the freshmen, who are now halfway through their first high school classes, and, I’m happy to report, doing quite well. I had them reflect on their experience in World thus so far, and a lot of them wrote that they were happy with their progress, or feeling like they’ve gotten better at particular skills, that kind of thing. So that’s awesome.
After they wrote those reflections, they did a quick peer review of another student’s religion/philosophy essay (I made copies without names, put them in Classroom, had everyone choose one; they had to tell me what they learned from it, and what they thought the author did well and/or could improve). And after that we started a new unit! I gave a basic overview of what they could expect in the coming weeks, explained how and when they would be assessed, and gave vocabulary notes in my usual, old school style. I got a little bit behind in my Block 2 class, so I was going to save the last third of the notes for Monday so as not to cut into silent reading time, but the students took a vote (fitting, as the new unit is about government and history, and one of the terms is democracy) and decided they wanted to finish today. So that’s what we did. In Block 3, my timing was spot on, so it wasn’t even an issue. It’s always easier the second go-around, and I’ve said in past entries that the students in that section tend to complete their work more quickly.
My GOV students spent their class time working on Major Case Projects, which are looking really good. I think most groups have finished gathering the requisite information, so on Monday they’ll polish their presentations and actually practice speaking. I could’ve imposed a tighter deadline, had the projects due Monday instead, but I want them to have that practice time. Even for seniors, sometimes, public speaking is hard. Heck, even for me it can be hard! Preparation is the key.
Oh, and there was this convo with one of the captains of the football team:
Student A: You guys have a play-off game on Saturday? FB Captain: Yup. And we’re gonna win. Me: Against who? FB Captain: It’s against <Opposing Team Name> Me: Oh, kid, I’m really sorry, but you’re gonna get crushed. FB Captain: Come on, Miss M, don’t say that!  Me: They crush us in every sport. Didn’t they crush you guys last season? FB Captain: ... Okay, yes. It was 45-0. But it’s a new season! Student A: Yeah, Miss M, it’s a new season! FB Captain: Gotta keep the faith. Winning mentality. Me: Alright, alright. I’ll keep the faith. Go do it. FB Captain: That’s right. We’ll revisit this Monday, Miss M.
I absolutely love the optimism and the fire. And we will, indeed, revisit this Monday!

One time I read that post that goes "once upon a time an adult put you on the ground and never picked you up again" and it made me sad so now I lift everyone. I'm 5'3" and kinda dumpy but the trick is to plant your feet, get 'em in a gable grip low near the hips with your knees bent, and then just tuck in your Elbows and straighten your legs. Gets those fuckers right on up there. I'm the oldest of eight and also the shortest but that sad shit lives with me so I'm hauling around these kids around like it's nothing. My little brother is a hockey player and a full head taller. I carried him around when he was a baby and I carried him around last weekend. My Papa is a 230lb Bavarian man who watches Stargate in a bath robe, he's smoked a pack a day for forty years. You think I haven't lifted him? I have. He said I couldn't do it but I did. God didn't give me social skills but I'm full of love and jacked as hell and he's not here to stop me

cause you rarely write drabbles, everything you write is like full fic length and takes longer and i see you posting little progress updates and little notes about each fic without spoiling. as someone who likes to talk (may or may not be the adhd idk) i cant imagine being in your position like WEREWOLF SUNGCHAN! EXISTS! IN MY MIND! AND ON THIS DOCUMENT THAT YOU CANT SEE! BUT HE'S REAL!! HE'S REAL TO ME!! like how do you do it? having no one to scream to about your fics when you're writing? and having to wait until its completed and uploaded to have people to talk about it with? like especially with all the crack fics you're writing atm, i would be BURNING with the need to show people how funny your writing is
p.s. medication update: im going to switch from methylphenidate to dexamphetamine tmr because apparently im intolerant to ritalin and i think you're on dexamphetamine rn? im hoping that i see some benefits from it. btw your success is keeping some of my spirit and motivation up despite how abysmal ritalin was for me so thank you for posting about how Adderall was for you i really appreciate having someone experiencing meds alongside me 🫶🏻

LMAO sometimes that's me and sometimes i'm writing and i'm like "im never letting another living human see this abomination im writing rn this is the worst thing i've ever written and the only penance for what i've done is to throw myself off a cliffside" like there is no in between im either SO EXCITED FOR IT AND ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT AND AM SO AKSEGKJHKJGKTR or i think it's awful and consider deleting it almost immediately after like this scene for changer2 im writing rn like literally as i got this ask (im not gonna delete it but she is gonna b HEAVILY EDITED)
it's fr so hard having werewolf sungchan AND hockey player sungchan BOTH IN MY MIND RN LIKE 🤪 screams everyday i put on my uniform to go fight in the idgaf war on the side of gaf 🫡🫡🤪🤪🫡🤪🫡🤪🤪🤣🤣🫡🤪🤪🫡 lest we also not forget that single dad kun is in here too and some other fellas that yall dont know abt like its soooooo bad in here for me
sometimes i contemplate posting random one-liners or snippets when i write things that make me teehee extra hard or r like rlly 🔥🔥🚨🚨🚨 but i always get worried about spoilers versus teasers soooo i keep it locked away all to myself and maybe go a lil crazy idk who's to say so i do more vague type stuff like talking about how there's a 2.6k makeout scene without posting any actual lines from it, or saying that one of my favorite character bits that i think is genuinely super funny is in dr. magic but not saying what it is, etc., etc., OR also doing ask games like word in a wip where y'all can try to get some lil snippets from me (which i feel i am always very generous with lol)
p.s. to ur p.s.: very happy to hear that you're getting switched off the meds that weren't working for you! i'm on "amphetamine salts" (generic adderall) which is a combo of dextroamphetamine and levoamphetamine, but pretty much yeah it's the big one in the amphetamine class of adhd meds. it has a sightly different effect than dextroamphetamine alone since it has levoamphetamine as well, which lasts longer and can produce better results in some people (pls go w ur dr on this im not giving medical advice omg just what i learned in my psych classes and the information i've been given). i actually just saw my dr today to check in on how i was doing on the adderall (reg check-up appt). i was rlly worried bc the initial good results i saw in the first days were practically gone after like the first week and i was practically back to normal (i.e., bad. my kitchen is a fucking mess again) and when i told him that he was like "lol that's fine! that was just the trial dose! so we can up you to a normal dose now since you saw good results at first" so hopefully i'll be functioning again 👍 so i love this for us 🫶 rooting for us 🫶🫶
