An Onion in My Pocket: My Life with Vegetables
Deborah Madison
When she was growing up in Davis, California, Deborah Madison would float down the irrigation ditches of the walnut groves near her house, ending up miles away.  That image could illustrate how this autobiography unfolds.  If you, too, remember the years of heavy brown baked goods and fake meat and wondered how she came up with gourmet vegetarian recipes in her seminal work Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone, this book maps the answer.  Many years as an acolyte and  cook in a San Francisco Buddhist center gave her a fundamental sense of appreciation of her ingredients, as well as abundant local access.  Her teachers included classic French cuisine cookbooks, stints at Chez Panisse and the American Academy in Rome, and the creation of two groundbreaking vegetarian restaurants.  Including authorship of award-winning cookbooks, work on the board of the Seed Savers Exchange and on the committee of the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity, Madison’s engagement in creating delicious, sustaining and sustainable food charts an inspiring course.

Quick red chile mole
1 1/2 tsp each: cumin seeds, coriander seed, anise seed, dried oregano
1 sm white onion finely diced
2 cloves garlic finely minced
1/3 cup mild red chile powder (NM or Ancho) (you can also add some powdered chipotle)
1 1/2 c water
2 tbl oil
1 Oz Mexican chocolate, chopped
Salt
1 tsp sherry vinegar
Toast then pound seeds, saute onions until golden then add garlic and all spices. Add chile and stir to combine then add water and bring to boil. After 10 min if it's too thick add a little more water and the chocolate to melt. Add salt to taste and vinegar at the end.
Use over meat/tofu/enchiladas or posole (or just eat it with a tortilla if you're me)

LENTIL SPINACH SOUP
This is a great dinner party soup.  I serve sausages on the side and they can be cut up and put into the soup for leftovers.  I serve Italian Sausages, chicken sausages [with feta and spinach] and field roast, which is fake sausage.  It was 27 degrees outside tonight and my guests enjoyed the heartiness of the meal.  Served with salad and focaccia which I started at 10 in the morning.  There was plenty of time for the bread to rise and the soup to simmer.  Not a lot of work and a lovely meal. I doubled the recipe to feed 9 people. The Soup 1 cup green or brown lentils cleaned and rinsed 1 bay leaf 1 celery stalk diced into 1/4 inch squares 7 cups of water salt 3 Tbsp. olive oil 1 large red onion finely diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 3 Tbsp. parsley, chopped 3 medium tomatoes, fresh or canned, peeled, seeded and chopped, juice reserved 1 bunch spinach, [about a pound] stems removed and leaves washed Red wine vinegar or sherry vinegar to taste Pepper Asiago or Parmesan cheese, grated
Put the lentils, bay leaf and celery in a soup pot with the water, reserved juice from the tomatoes and 1/2 tsp. salt. Bring to a boil and scoop off any foam that forms on the surface, then lower the heat to slow boil. While the lentils are cooking, heat the oil in a skillet and add the onion and 1/2 tsp. salt: cook briskly for a few minutes, lower the heat and stir in garlic and parsley.  Continue cooking until the onion is soft. Add the tomatoes and cook for 5 minutes, then combine with the cooking lentils.
Cut the spinach leaves into 1/2 inch strips, there should be about 4 cups.  When the lentils are soft, stir in the spinach by handfuls.  Once it has cooked down, thin the soup, if necessary, by adding more water, and taste for salt.
Simmer the soup 5 minutes; then add vinegar to taste, to brighten the flavors.  Serve with freshly ground black pepper and Asiago or Parmesan cheese, or a spoonful of creme fraiche.
Serves 4-6

do you think northside!reader and lip have any kids? if so what are their names/what are they like? 🤗
i honestly think they do! i've thought about this quite a bit and ive come up with this:
the oldest is madison fiona gallagher (of course they'd honor fi with a middle name hehe) i imagine she's around 12 years old?? she's definetly more of a look-a-like for lip, but she acts like you two combined. she has his mannerisms but your attitude and certain phrases you specifically use. she's not madison to you or lip, she's maddie / mads. i think she's just like fiona when it comes to leadership, she just naturally looks after people and cares about them
the middle is archie phillip gallagher, who i picture to be 9 years old right now. he's definetly a combination of you and lip when it comes to appearence but he acts more like carl. definetly a wild-child, the troublemaker who just has good intentions lmao
then there's the youngest, elizabeth deborah gallagher. probably around five years old?? she is 100% your twin. every way you act, the things you say. lip's nickname for her is parrot because she repeats everything anyone says at times (and thats why lip tries not to curse around her, or any of the other kids because they pick up on it and then pass it to her but of course that doesnt happen all the time and it slips sometimes) ugh the way i wanna write a full fanfic or au for them so bad

Michael Jackson 30th Anniversary Celebration (Live in New York, NY) 2001 Pop / R&B / Soul / Adult Contemporary
Been posting about the Queen of Pop over the past few days, but now it's come time for some posts about the King of Pop too. And today we have an incredible, star-studded concert from 2001 that celebrated the inimitable career of the single greatest entertainer that the world has ever known, Michael Jackson, with this commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the release of his debut single as a solo artist.
But first, some crazy background about this legendary show: originally, it had been planned as just a one-night-only affair, and was set to take place on September 7, 2001, at Madison Square Garden; but demand had become so high, that just a couple days beforehand, a second date of September 10, 2001 was added as well. And the day after that second show, Michael was actually scheduled to go to the World Trade Center for a meeting, in order to return a watch that he had used, as well as a necklace that his best friend Elizabeth Taylor had worn for the occasions too. But thankfully, for his own sake, he overslept 😳.
Now, when I said that this was a star-studded event, I *really* meant it, because you'd be hard-pressed to find a concert lineup that's ever matched the magnitude of this one. In addition to a solo set from Michael himself, and another one with his brothers from the Jackson 5—who hadn't performed together in, like, two decades—there were also electrifying performances from a total who's who of the pop, soul, and R&B industries as a whole, from both past and present: Usher, Mýa, and Whitney Houston; Billy Gilman; Shaggy and Rikrok; Monica, Tamia, Mýa, Deborah Cox, and Rah Digga; Marc Anthony; Destiny's Child; Liza Minnelli; James Ingram and Gloria Estefan; 98 Degrees, Usher, and Luther Vandross; *NSYNC; and Slash. Either they covered one of Michael's songs, sang their own hits, or performed alongside him during his sets.
And it's a very good thing that an agreement had been reached to set up two dates for the event too, because when it came time to assemble a TV broadcast, the best performances (and crowd reactions!) from each night could just be plucked and spliced together to form one whole, magnificent show for a national or international audience. Plus, according to some folks, Michael didn't seem to be fully there on the first night either, which people who claim to have been in the know chalk up to drug use, but he dismissed as only a lack of rehearsal and his own self-consciousness. Either way, on that original September 7th date, Michael didn't bring back his patented Moonwalk for very long, but on September 10th, during his performance of "Billie Jean," he managed to fully dazzle with his repertoire of slinky, physics-defying dance moves like he was back at the famed Motown 25th anniversary show where he had originally unveiled the Moonwalk in the first place. And naturally, that 9/10 performance of the song was the one that was chosen to be included in this amazing recording here!
So, such a wonderful time capsule of 2001 in this momentous concert that took place *quite literally* just before one of the most consequential events in world history. A pair of spectacular, unforgettable New York nights, followed by one horrific, unforgettable New York day.

I did one of these for my sideblog BlackFemmeCharacterDependency (BFCD) and... While it’ll take longer on this end to do because there are more prominent figures here than on that one, I thought it would be good to also have one for my main...

Favorite curry recipe? Or something unexpected you would add to a curry?
Thank you for asking. I, uh...don't make curries very often? So I will offer a peanut sauce recipe instead, from Deborah Madison's Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone:
3 tbsp unsweetened peanut butter
2 tbsp rice wine vinegar
1 tbsp chopped cilantro
1 plump garlic clove, minced or put through a press
2 teaspoons soy sauce or to taste
1 tsp light brown sugar
1/2 tsp chile oil
Salt
Combine all ingredients except the salt, adding 2-4 tbsp warm water to make it the consistency you wish. Add 1/4 tsp salt then taste.
Makes about 1/2 cup
Notes: 1. I pretty much never have all of those ingredients at one time, it's still good with a little substitution. 2. It will look exceptionally gross partway through the mixing, just keep going and it'll all come together. 3. if you're not using it all right away it will keep for a few days.
