I deeply find the tumblr space, as a whole, so vitally valuable to our current society. I, like all of you, have painstakingly enjoyed sifting, repurposing, creating, and displaying a woven unique tapestry… mine is currently over 10 years long. A historical virtual “scroll” 📜… Manila ironic in the worst way: the scroll 🤳🏾 that consumes us.

This isn’t MINDLESSLY scrolling… it feels like… peaking penetratingly into the minds of human beings through their own perceptions.

Every fucking photo, gif, text post, meme, story, song, collage, any and all of it … was put there purposely. Everything … means something to someone here. That’s … fucking incredible.

That’s … fucking human magic. 🪄 something no other social media platform can recreate in the world of TikTok’s, we remained tumblr.

Every single mf time I find a new blog or revisit a mutual’s blog… and I just burst with color and vibrance and wild wickedness and I … drift… loosing myself in the back of your brains, I’m saved.

I’m saved from my own brain, trauma, habits, hangups, mental health… I’m just safe.. tucked behind YOUR brain… and they always fucking feel JUST like mine… so thank you.

I love human beings so much and this is my MOST favorite way to experience them. I’m so fucking happy I haven’t been able to log back into my TIKTOK for months. This is the only place I want to be when I’m online.

The tumblr scroll is so much more healthy: i see these feeds as very distinct and endlessly versatile flip book of human ingenuity and stupidity and comradery and community stitched together to make a pattern that mirrors a portion of a person… can you imagine? IT’S FASCINATING! I mean I know It’s equally ugly here and often… yet outstandingly but overwhelmingly … this is a safe space for creators and the many fandoms we express and decompress with.

i remain almost speechless,on the brink of pure pleasure… on how absolutely embedded i am into all of your collective energy on this stupid little imperfectly perfect fucked up little platform.

Look at April Fool’s Day: Tumblr reminded us all.. to just exhale and have fun TOGETHER. Ugh. gut me gently with the sheer scale of talent and genius and curiosity and kindness and skill and silly and authentic and absurd and individual yet succinct creation of … art. Of feed art. 🖼️ the scale and silly of the creativity around that now HOLIDAY, was tremendous and stupid and clever and community and inclusive.

i hope to one day gain support in organizing and leading a team of experts to create a true con for us. i have experience in events and .. I care. 🧠🪄

tumblr… this … is one of my longest lasting relationships, and i cherish the time so very dearly. From screaming at porn bots to whispering to mutuals… I’m so grateful for all of it.

Staff Pick of the Week

We recently transferred an early 1930s edition of Argentine-British writer William Henry Hudson's novel Green Mansions, published in New York by Three Sirens Press with illustrations by Keith Henderson, from the library's general collections to Special Collections. The story is convoluted and fantastical, about a wealthy Venezuelan revolutionary who flees into the Guyanese jungle (the Green Mansions of the title?), tenuously befriends a village of indigenous people, explores a sector of the forest that the villagers fear, and encounters a waif-like, "shy and mysterious girl with the melodious bird-like voice" who the villagers are convinced is the evil spirit-protector "Daughter of the Didi." Nevertheless, he continues to seek out the girl, whom he befriends and falls in love with, and eventually learns that she is the last member of her tribe. This ultimately leads, in a roundabout way, to a falling-out with the villagers and tragic consequences.

Originally published in 1904 to some acclaim, this exotic romance bears a palpable strain of ethnic superiority. The indigenous people are backwards, superstitious, and violent; the protagonist is European, thoughtful, and reasoned (and wealthy to boot); and Rima, the ethereal jungle girl, and her people were apparently based by Hudson on persistent rumors of a lost tribe of white people who lived in the mountains. Probably not a novel I will be reading any time soon, but I am quite taken by the drama in the black and white illustrations of Scottish artist and illustrator Keith Henderson (1883-1982).

Henderson created the novel's 35 illustrations for the trade and limited editions originally published by Duckworth & Co. in 1926. While there is no publishing date in this edition by Three Sirens Press, a publisher that specialized in high-quality reprints of classic texts illustrated by noted artists, there is some evidence that it was produced in 1932. I hope you enjoy these illustrations as much as I do.

Staff Pick of the Week!

English poet and illustrator Charles Tomlinson (d. 2015) was born in 1927 to an idyllic and musing environment. Growing up in Stoke-on-Trent and travelling outside the city on the weekends to fish in undisturbed landscapes planted seeds of inspiration for Tomlinson’s future poetry and ability to evoke the feelings of a place.

After studying English Literature under Donald Davie (1922-1995) at Queens’ College, Tomlinson went on to enjoy a thirty-six-year teaching career at Bristol University and publish over thirty works of poetry. His poetry has been described as inhabiting the space between philosophy and natural landscapes and was internationally recognized with awards including the 1968 Frank O’Hara Prize, the 1993 Bennett Award, and the 2002 Criterion Poetry Prize.

In the throes of a high-quality lake effect fog that elicits an homage to Tomlinson's delightful line "baffled by the choreography of the season..." from Autumn Piece, I'm sharing a collection of his poetry and images, aptly titled Words and Images. Published and printed in a limited edition by the Covent Garden Press Ltd in 1972, Words and Images is a collection of eleven poems accompanied by black and white graphics. It is noted that this is the first publishing in book form of graphics by Tomlinson, and that “the pictures are not illustrations of texts, but texts themselves which explore by visual means a world of light, space and density.”
