Hi!

I’m Ginger: artist-nerd, citizen-scientist, make-garden-not-lawn enthusiast, and avid baker-of-cinnamon-rolls-from-scratch! I very much enjoy fandom! What is my weekly fanfic consumption like? High. Very High. Some of my current favs include: Star Wars (especially Kylux), The Witcher (here meaning I saw about an episode and a half of TWN, found the fandom, and wandered happily off towards Lambert and Aiden), LotR, sometimes StarTrek…..assorted others! I am passionate about creating things, too! Often, that means drawing fan art and/or comics. Actually, I’ve found myself stalling intermittently in that department over the past year or so. I’ve been almost exclusively drawing Kylux things using only Procreate, for a while now. Which I love doing! But I suspect doing just that one type of art for going on 4 years now is starting to have an effect of the breadth and depth of my creative well. So I’ve decided to change up how I create for a while! A good friend gifted me a sketchbook IRL and I want to fill it with traditional media drawings. I want to try drawing from more fandoms, try out new digital techniques and styles that maybe I hadn’t allowed myself before. I want to invest some time into art forms besides drawing, even - I’ve always enjoyed fiber arts and I’ve got a jack loom I’ve meant to finish repairing for a while. Once that is working, I want to learn to weave. And I want to share some of these things here! On that note, I suspect more than a few people who follow me on Tumblr are here because I have drawn a lot of kylux. Especially the long-form fan comic ‘Dying Is Easy Young Man, Living Is Harder’. WRT The Comic: Kraken and I are still fully intending to see it to it’s conclusion! Honestly, though, it’s been on unofficial hiatus for a while now and it’s likely to remain that way for a bit longer. Kraken is super busy with retraining and job related demands IRL, and I am also pretty swamped and trying to get back in a more sustainable groove artistically. The whole sitch doesn’t leave us a lot of room to create a big project like DIEYMLIH together, right now. I know firsthand how hard it can be to wait a long time for a story you enjoy to get finished - so I want to say ‘thank you’ to everyone being very patient with us! We will get there eventually! Hc the freelancers who die are like submarines that go missing, officially still out on patrol. Florida is the only freelancer that is officially gone from the program. And then Tucker, asexual who has had sex one (1) time and realised he didnt like it very much, is stuck between revealing to the whole goddamn planet that he doesnt actually fuck, and paying a billion dollars of child support.

In an everyone lives no one dies type au I think Donut gets Maine, Locus, South, and Wash to come to his wine and cheese hour and he does their makeup and their nails.

Au where Sigma is just so fucking invested in getting Maine and Wash to date that he doesnt do anything evil. "Agent Maine, I think you will find this course I have signed you up for quite informative" Sigma this is a couples wine and pottery class "Oh look, is that Agent Washington over there? you should go say hi."

Au where Wash and Epsilon bond. It still fucks Wash up and shit, cause yknow. Epsilon issues. But Wash goes like "I am going to fucking kill the director he fucked you ai over so much" And Epsilon is so taken aback bc of Alphas view of Wash from an outside, heavily filtered perspective made him seem happy go lucky, innocent, and a bit naive.

Au where the freelancers find out that the director is Linas dad and behind her back they're all like "hey is she okay? why does he talk to her like that?" but then whenever she's around they just accuse her of nepotism. Gamma and Sigma team up to hack the leaderboard and change her name to nepotism baby.

I love South. I wish she existed more. I wish her and North and Theta could have gotten along. I wish Theta could suit jump like Omega and Alpha. I wish Theta could spend time with South. Like yeah South wouldn't like having to share an ai with her brother but like. He's their littlest brother.

Junior and Theta could autism bond. I think they'd both like comics. Also Junior teaches Theta basketball and Theta teaches Junior to skate. Skateboard kid plus scooter kid. I think Palomo would like to skateboard too. Wash and Palomo both helped teach Theta to skateboard. Wash bc he's friends w North, Palomo bc he's at the skatepark frequently. Jensen roller skates, she's... okay at it. not good. but okay. She broke her tailbone trying to impress Palomo. Andersmith would work at a youth center that the teens hang out at. Matthews works at a movie theatre, Bitters watches a movie there every week, maybe just to see Matthews.

Sarge werebear. Simmons vampire. Grif faun. Donut Light Elemental. Lopez is a ghost that got stuck in a shitty robot Sarge built. Church and the ai are ghosts, Tex is a vampire, Caboose is a werewolf (big doggy :3). Siren Tucker. Deep sea mermaid Junior (glowing octopus type stuff). Faun Kai (same as Grif). Carolina’s a Phoenix. Wash some kind of big cat thing. Florida Shapeshifter (he prefers being reptiles). The twins are demons. 479er is a harpy. York poltergeist (throws stuff at people). Wyoming's some kind of “answer my riddles three” type of imp. Ct is also a shapeshifter. Maine’s just a regular guy with a lot of weird friends. Felix and Locus are a fire elemental and a dryad respectively. Siris is a water elemental. In my au Donut’s a light elemental which makes it so fucking funny if Church pops up and says "boo" Donut just fucking decks him. and through Church being a ghost (a form of light) and Donut being a light elemental, Donut’s fist connects. South is the demon people are more likely to fear, but North is the one you really need to look out for. When South loses her temper people get frightened, when North loses his temper people die. If there's like. a group of kids exploring or something North’ll hold South back from doing anything more than scaring them. If there's a priest attempting an exorcism or someone with a cross threatening South, their organs will be found separately from their bodies. 

It's kinda funny when people make Church and Lina siblings and then Tex is just some random girl that Church likes. Like I fully understand why and the only other alternative i can think of is like. Church is the director's younger brother who was raised alongside his daughter after their parents died. and Tex is Allison's younger sister. Only way I could put together Church kinda being the director and Tex kinda being Allison but also Church and Lina being siblings without there being any relation between Tex and Church.

Florida and Ct have a coworker friends relationship i think. When they first met I think Florida said something vague and threatening to her so she pulled a knife on him. They've been sort of friends ever since.

Process of my HEX Gift

I finally remembered to take a few screenshots of my progress stages and I always wanted to do a walkthrough post so here we are!!

I did not have a specific prompt from my giftee, except for the ship which was Silrah so I decided I wanted to draw a cozy romantic Christmas scene.

Which totally showed in my first sketch...definitely... My first sketches mostly look unrecognizable and there is no real system for them because it's just lines for my brain to visualize where I want everything to be. Sometimes they look like this, sometimes they are more light/shadow inclusive. The next step was to work out the poses for Farah and Saul and as you can see, I was struggling. 🤣

When I finally found the pose I was looking for and fleshed out some elements in the background it was time for one of my absolute favorite parts.....that I forgot to screenshot....THE VALUES Which is me trying to figure out the lighting by blocking in light and dark areas with various shades of grey. But because I forgot to take a screenshot (and the value layer that I normally keep until the end for reference disappeared into the void of procreate) we will skip straight to the colour! I very roughly block in the areas with the colours I have in mind to see if everything fits and change what I don't like yet. When that is done I now have a finished concept which I need to refine and then paint!

And now I reached the point of actual background design which was HARD. I looked at many pics of Farah's headmistress' office to try and get a feel for what items might be in her private suite. The mantle of the fireplace looked very empty even after I added the little astrology magic thing and the flowers so I decided to add a circle just like the ones in her office as @septemberrie deducted. I also played around with the design of the fire guard because I wanted it to have that elegant whimsical fairy vibe. I added a lamp inspired by one from Sims 4 and a book in the foreground to hide the awkward angle they are sitting at. For the frame on the wall, I wanted a moon-themed design but it took me a while to figure it out, which is why I left the frame empty for now. Then it was time for lineart and actually sketching in the elements I wanted to be in the background. I usually set my colour or value layer and the sketch layer to 20% and draw over it.

You might also notice that the wrapped sword disappeared...which I regret to this day because I simply forgot to paint it into the rough lineart and only remembered when Skye asked what's supposed to be in the remaining present. Maybe I will add it at some point because now Saul has no present...except for Farah. But the square box present was meant to be Saul's present to Farah and originally I wanted a jewelry box but it was too small to see so I just....put a bigger box. Creativity *sparkles*

Another thing is that from the rough line-art to the nice line-art (yes I always draw my line-art two or three times.....even though line-art is my least favorite stage probably) the Christmas tree is losing a lot of ornaments. Originally I wanted to put in way more stuff like small straw stars or figurines but after painting a million tiny branches I started regretting every life decision that brought me to this point so I simplified the tree. A lot. In the end, I don't regret that because I think it fits them even better. Silrah don't strike me as people who go all out on Christmas and rather just decorate small and tastefully (given they would even celebrate because Otherworld= different culture, but we ignore that piece of worldbuilding for this Christmas-themed drawing)

Next I block in every area on a separate layer so I can alpha-lock them for the painting process. At this point I was getting too annoyed with the tree because painting it was a pain in the ass so I started shading and painting in textures and finishing everything else before even continuing to block in the tree.

The whole image was still too cold at this point so I went in with one of my favorite parts: atmosphere and then lighting bringing it all together and making the painting shine! Painting light is so much fun and I definitely want to learn more about lighting and structure to get better at it but I really love it when someone compliments the light in my art!!

I also finally added the title of the book in the front. I wanted it to be something about magic that Farah would read and looked at various old book covers with pretty lettering. I decided on "The Story of Magic" because I found a very pretty-looking reference cover with exactly the letters that I needed to spell.

And then....something was still missing......THE TREE. (I didn't take a progress picture at that stage that's why it's already in the pics up there but in the end I still had to draw the light on the branches and after doing about four or five of them I decided the effort was not worth the result and did the light reflection very very roughly. But I don't think anyone except me really notices.

And tada the finished Christmas drawing!

I finished the Magnus Archives to day and my goodness that ending! It was a roller coaster of a time! Decided to draw Mr. Spider. Had a lot of fun trying the animation stuff on procreate for this. I’ll have to try some more later! The spider webs too me so long to draw out, but i think I did a pretty good job!

Personal Intro (who am I, and what am I up to when I don’t waste time on Tumblr) under the cut

Once there was a girl with so many words, so many images, so many songs in her head that had no place to go. So she decided some of them will just go here…

Well, that sounds a bit contrived, but it’s not entirely untrue. Apart from the “girl”-part, because I’m at the younger end of Gen X. Or the “no place to go”-part, because some of my work actually *did* go places. Just not the stuff I decided to put on here…

Which is mostly Sandman stuff right now, let’s be honest (I fell in love with it when I was 16, and it still has a tight grip on me now). And the fact that it’s a wild mix between my metas, my fanfic and a bit of my doodling already shows the pull in different directions I have experienced for most of my life:

I’ve been a writer since my teenage years, and in another life, I’d maybe have more faith in myself, and writing would be all I’d do. Or maybe not, since I can never just do one thing for too long. Nevertheless, one of my teachers in high school was convinced I needed to tell stories to be happy and warned me about a career in science. Back then, I thought he was overly dramatic. Looking back on it, I sometimes think he had a point.

I’ve worked in science/academia, creative/performing arts and mental health. I guess I’m just a multi-hyphenate who can’t make up her mind what she wants to do with her life, so she tries to do it all and ends up burned out half of the time.

For now, I support people who go through really terrible stuff, and it means the world to me. But it is equally hard and sometimes soul-destroying. Hence, I’ve stopped working for our health service and focus more on my writing these days (both fiction and non-fiction) while still seeing a particular subset of clients privately, but on a much more manageable scale that also takes my own well-being into consideration. You can’t pour from an empty cup…

I’m bilingual and write most of my non-fiction in English and my fiction in my (what I perceive as stronger) other language. But I write fanfic exclusively in English because I want to separate it from my other writing: Somewhere along the way, I managed to publish a few novels under a pen name, and only a select few people know about it. And I intend to keep it that way.

My partner (a graphic artist) thinks I should do more with my art, but I feel everything about it is wrong, and I’m not formally trained. I used to draw much more (mostly pencil and ink), but between working and having a family, something had to give, and if I have to choose, writing always comes first. But I doodle and experiment a lot in Procreate because it’s quicker, and it usually helps me when I procrastinate on my writing. I drop the odd drawing in here (like my avatar), but I don’t see myself as a fine artist, and I’m in perpetual awe of the fanart and talent I see on here.

I also compose and still work as a musician sometimes. As you can tell from the one line devoted to it, performing isn’t really that important to me anymore. However, music is. I have a small adjunct teaching gig at a University that ties in with both performance and psychology. So at this stage of my life, this particular area has become more about giving back.

Nothing I put on here is intended to ever be published in “real” life (maybe that’s odd, because this is still real life, after all). This is just an account for unapologetically being me, unfiltered, with all my hyperfixations—and undoubtedly some pointless shitposts just for fun…

I have a question!!! How do you decide what colors you're gonna use and where to put them?? I can only think in base colors like the shirt is blue and the hair is pink etc. etc...but your art is so packed full of color I just have to wonder!! Sorry if this has already been asked before,, but I just think your art is so wonderful!!

Hi! Thank you!! For colors what I used to do is I would adjust things with the Curves tool in procreate. You go to Adjustments>Curves and it looks like this

Then I would move the points around randomly until something interesting happened! After messing around with the curves long enough I eventually just got a sense of what sort of color combinations I liked and was able to come up with them on my own! I know lots of drawing programs/photo editing apps have this function so I’d recommend trying it out.

Another thing I’ve found is that adding some hue variation makes stuff look more interesting! So like if you’re drawing a star and you want to make it yellow, you can also add orange to it or blue or green or whatever and then there will be a little more variety.

Like for this bunny you can see the main color is pink but I added a lot of other stuff on there too!

Honestly I’m still not the best with color so take my advice with a grain of salt 😭 but I hope this helps! 🍓💗

Personalizing The Pale King and White Lady

So this will go into how others characterize these two characters, along with my characterization of these characters in both my AU and my fic as they are pretty similar. Part of this post does have criticism to both PK and WL but they aren't complete monsters.

Also TW: I will obviously talk about child death along with miscarriages and parental and child issues. In my story, it is kinda important as it's related to WL's drive and her and PK's relationship with all of their children, vessels and Hornet.

Let's start off with The Pale King

The way that people characterize the PK is either "bad man that killed his kids" or "dad man who really wanted his kids but had no choice but to sacrifice his kid." In my personal opinion I think that it is a mix of both.

The short of it is that I think that PK wanted kids(because of WL influence which we will get into later), but decided that the life of the many bugs are more important than the few...children were going to sacrifice. This would have been easier if it weren't for the many dead children that they had.

I have a headcannon that they tried to have kids but due to issues that they were trying to have a hybrid child(both of root and wyrm) the children didn't survive for long. I even made a fic about it so if you want to read a slightly angst fic, here you go.

While WL really wanted to have kids, PK went along with it cause his wife wanted kids. Though he did not not want to have kids, he felt like kids would give off the image of a caring King and Queen. With that being said, I do think that if they successfully had kids that survived he would have gotten attached in some way, but not in a way that would be healthy for the kid at all.

Now let's talk about the White Lady.

I feel like the White Lady gets a slap on the wrist for the things she has done. While yes, she might have been coherence into sacrificing her children, she made that decision and somehow still thought it was a good idea to try it again after the fact.

When the knight comes to her in game she says that they should take the hollow knights spot, as if trying the same exact thing twice would cause something different to happen.

Now time for the headcannony stuff about if WL were to have kids.

For sure, I think that the White Lady wanted kids, but I think she wanted kids cause

1. She "desire(s) to spread seeds upon the land" and 2. She wanted to have kids to love her.

The second option isn't based on anything in game, it's just how I think the WL is. I imagine she has a very idolized image of how a family should be. A mother and father with obedient kids she can model to her liking. I think she would want a prim and proper child who is perfect. (With that description of WL, it may sound like she is homophobic. And that is kinda right. She prefers bugs taking partners that could procreate with. However that ideology will have to be challenged as when PV gets a date.)

Now let's go into PK and WL relationships with Hornet, and how I think it went as I think it's approximately how they would have treated their own kids. I think the relationship is rough with the monarchs and Hornet. PK simply had Hornet as an agreement, so I imagine he would care for her the way that WL would "care" for her children. Something that was moldable and to his liking. As I said, he only wants children cause of the WL, and he would shape his views into her view. Besides, Hornet was Royalty, she should act like one. This made Herrah limit Hornets time with PK as the way he would raise her with the WL was not healthy.

Now let's get into how these personalities work in my AU.

So the Pure Vessel gets revealed and both the PK and WL are horrified as they genuinely thought they were hollow. I am unsure how they get revealed, but they do.

While they are horrified at the revelations, they also have thoughts that horrified the great knights.

During her musings, the WL speaks to herself out loud. She says that she is slightly disappointed that she now has a spawn that is completely grown that she can't raise them from when they were a child. She only spoke a little bit about how they wanted a new child before Dryya spoke against her queen and how she should be grateful that a child of hers is alive.

PK didn't change anything about how he treated the vessel besides that they weren't going to be sealed. When finding out that they were impure, he tried to give them an option of choice but they didn't comply as they were unsure how to do that. He then simply ignored them and worked on another way to fight or seal the infection.

The Five Great Knights are truly the reason why there is some semblance of a family unit. The knights dealt with bugs that came from abusive situations, so they know how to kinda deal with the situation. They started off with trying to gently pry the stoic armor to reveal a scared child that is afraid to disappoint their parents and is ashamed of their twin they left behind.

After that The Great Knights explained to the King and Queen that if they don't clean their act, then it would be better for them to live elsewhere once they are stable enough. The King and Queen obligated and started taking their advice and started interacting with their child better.

Something that was hard for them to do is trying to choose and force things for them. An instant of them doing this is when the vessel was thinking of choosing a name on their own accord. The queen heard about this from one of the knights as they were talking about name options with them, and the queen saw this as her opportunity to 'help them'/insert her desires and image into them. She essentially overwhelmed them and tried to pick a name for them. The Knights found out about this and immediately criticized the queen for doing so.

The vessel eventually picked out the name Howl.

Eventually they become somewhat a family unit, but WL and PK aren't fully satisfied.

That is until Pk found more vessels living with other families.

First it started out at a trip to Deepnest when a vessel rammed into him when playing around with Hornet. He immediately wanted to take the vessels off of Herrah's hand but she declined. They were her children and she had basically raised them. Here is the backstory for the Deepnest Vessels.

The next vessel he had encountered was when visiting Greenpath to request for the Nailmasters training for some of the guards. There he found Broken Vessel training with the Nailmasters. Of course he tries to do the same thing but the Nailmasters don't want to lose the kid. Here is a post about them.

After interrogating the Nailmasters, they find out a vessel is living in the wilds with an esteemed hunter. Unlike the other two groups the hunter pretty much tells the king to f off and leave the child alone as he already kicked them out of the nest when they weren't ready. Here is a post about them.

As I said in my original post about this AU, PK had a good enough relationship with Howl and they told them about their twin. I haven't quite done a story for Little Ghost yet but I have an approximation of how they will be revealed.

So with the reveal of these vessels make WL and PK both happy and infuriated. They have somewhat of an ego and feel like they are entitled to have their kids even though they abandoned them in the first place. WL especially doesn't think that the lifestyle that their kids are being raised in is proper for a royal child.

Though throughout this AU they will learn to accept their kids despite the family they live in.

Okay so I didn’t actually do that much formal research for it, because anytime i try to do that i feel my creativity and livelyness is sapped out of me (probably one of the reasons i hate school lmao) anyways

It’s actually a really funny (and long) story how this au came to be, so at first i saw the party clone of MK in lego monkie kid (this won’t make much sense if you haven’t watched that show sorry, but also at the same time if you haven’t YOU REALLY SHOUDL ITS REALLY GOOD AND THE ANIMATION MAKES ME DROOL NGL) and i was like yo wouldn’t it be cool if Lloyd had an evil party clone too? and then it expanded to an RGB evil clone au (cuz i’m a sucker for RGB siblings haha) and then i got the idea for nya to be a racer and to have a cyborg gf (cough cough pixal) and i was like okay scrap all the clone stuff were making this a completely independent au because this is MUCH cooler. and yeah, idk where the whole cyberpunk thing came from, i just thought it would really fit into the themes of fighting rings, clubs and races :DD

After that i was a bit busy for a while with school (just like i am now :c) but the brain rot for this AU was still going strong, so I made a pinterest board where i saved just a fuck load of cyberpunk shit that i thought looked cool, and whenever i had time i’d use those to draw the designs! here are some sketches with their references :D (zane and harumi included since they were ur favs! ps zane is my fav too, he just gives off such manager vibes but, hot, HAHA)

Don't know if slots are open still, if not then Disregard. How about a headcannon of Shepard being a terrible wingman/woman for Grunt? Like Grunt have a crush on a Civi Darling

Now THIS is a curious case. Grunt is the perfect Krogan, so him developing an interest in a non-Krogan, much less a civilian, would honestly confuse him a bit. He'd probably get a crush on a Darling that has some kind of fighting prowess and/or isn't afraid of anything or anyone.

Shepard can see Grunt acting a little oddly and assumes it's just another Krogan maturation thing; he's old enough to be part of a clan and he's old enough to...y'know, breed...still, wooing a non-Krogan is definitely out of his wheelhouse. So Shep isn't surprised when he asks his Battlemaster how their species show interest in each other.

Krogan males typically show a display of strength to woo a female, so Grunt would initially slaughter the toughest beasts in the area and present their heads to Darling. Shepard said that flowers were a common gift humans give potential mates, so he decided to stuff some in the animals' eye sockets, mouth, and nostrils. It's a combining of their two cultures.

Krogan are a race of action, and the females typically are the ones who do the talking and actual thinking. So after a few fumbled attempts at trying to woo them the human way, he switches gears after Shepard says to just do what he feels is right. So, he'd present them with a weapon he crafted himself, and tell them that he wants them as his mate. Technically, breeding for procreation is useless since they're not Krogan, but he still wants them as a mate.

And the weapon is honestly the sweetest gesture he could've given them: he's inscribed Krogan words and words their own language all along it, explaining that instead of human romance poetry it's something romantic AND useful. You can club someone to death or shoot them with his love poem, and that's pretty beautiful.

Shepard may be able to help with the wooing aspect, but Grunt also needs to have The Talk about human-Krogan relations from both them and Mordin. Basically Darling needs a LOT of preparation and stimulation, and potentially some light padding since Krogan hides are so rough and abrasive. Grunt tries to be as gentle as he can, but "gentle" and "Krogan" are basically oxymorons. The fact that Darling's only going to Mordin with bruising and sore hamstrings from being folded in half is honestly a miracle.

Still, he tries. He's fascinated by how soft and jiggly humans can be, even muscular ones like Shepard. Krogan bodies are hard and rough everywhere except for their eyeballs and inner organs, so touching and fucking a human feels like they're doing it to a pillow. And human females have two holes, but Darling is still surprised that Krogan have two dicks. Grunt was told that the "back" hole can tear really easily, so he opted to fuck Darling's thighs while his other cock filled her cunt. Krogans also cum buckets, so not only was Darling LITERALLY filled up but she wound up covered up to her neck once Grunt came.

Hey Tumblr! It's been a hot minute, but I wanted to hop on today and share a project I just finished for my digital media class!

Keep reading to see my process of making this dagger!

Our assignment was super open ended, with the prompt just being "Make a project that involves Blender in some way", so I thought doing something mixed media would be a lot of fun. I'm on a mission this semester to start making art for classes that I WANT TO MAKE, and not just tailor to what I think will get me a good grade and what my profs would like. Honestly, could make a whole post about that mission as it is actually more challenging than I had anticipated, but I digress.

For my dagger, I started by making a quick sketch in Procreate to get an idea of what I wanted my model to look like. I got some inspo off of Pinterest, but tired to make the design my own, and something I could feasibly make.

Since I was making this project for a digital media class, and the assignment was supposed to revolve around using Blender, I made a base 3D model for the dagger, which I would then send off to get printed.

I originally tried to model the vines and leaves in Blender, but I had a really hard time with it, since I am still re-learning how to use Blender (haven't used it since high school). So I decided to make it a mixed media project, since the prof said this assignment was very open ended. Plus, doing mixed media would give me a chance to try out foam clay, which I've been wanting to experiment with for a while.

I then sent my 3D model off to my good friend David, who 3D printed it for me. He was even kind enough to send me a time lapse of it printing!

After printing, David also assembled the base for me, but I put glue in all the seams, followed by filler once that dried, and sanded the whole thing down. It definitely could have used more sanding since you can still see print lines in some places, but I was on a strict time crunch to get this assignment in on time.

Then I went in with my foam clay and started adding the leaves and vines on the handle, as well as the leaf details on the cross-guard. I had never used foam clay before (I know... what kind of cosplayer am I?), but I really enjoyed working with it. I had a bit of a hard time getting it to stick to the plastic, but I found that wetting it and then letting it get a bit tacky really helped with that.

The foam clay I bought was from Michaels, and was technically labeled "Modelling Foam", so I have no idea how it compares to the nice foam clay that most cosplayers use. I would have ordered that, but I decided to do the modelling by hand rather last minute, so I needed to buy what was available in store. Overall I enjoyed working with it, but I would still be interested to try the real stuff some time (assuming it's actually different from this).

After letting the foam clay dry overnight, I started painting it. I primed everything with a silver spray primer, then went over just the blade, pommel, and cross-guard with a more metallic silver spray paint. Thankfully, I had enough paint and primer left over from the two angel blades I made in the summer, so I didn't need to buy more paint for this project. I then painted the handle by hand, which was one of the most tedious paint processes I've ever done, but I'm quite happy with the results.

Last up was some clear coat, as I didn't want to risk any of the paint chipping off. I'm also hoping the clear coat will help seal the foam a bit, as I have no idea how foam clay holds up when used on props. I let the sealant dry overnight last night and this morning it was done! And today I took some pictures of it outside to submit to my prof for grading, and to use during our class critique tonight. Considering I was rushing these last steps after 3D printing, it is a miracle I got it done by the deadline. I'm quite happy with how it turned out!!!

Now I'm just hoping that crit goes well tonight! We'll see if my prof thinks this is too much mixed media for a digital media class...

Hi! I'm in love with the way you shade your pieces and I was wondering if you'd ever make a tutorial/quick explanation on it? I'd love to be able to try out your technique

I'm answering this a bit late cause I struggle with explaining anything I do to be honest :D I have some process screenshots so I can explain my process of making a piece at least...

So, I start with a pretty rough sketch, which I usually clean up/erase a bit to make it as not detailed as possible (best seen in the second example).

Under the sketch layer, I add a layer where I put all the colors, shading etc together. Next, I merge the sketch layer and color layer (I usually color the sketch before that a bit, also seen in the second example). And then I just... paint and render on one layer until I decide everything looks clean enough 🤷‍♀️

The last step is adding background colors, some lighting on another layer if I wish (usually set to overlay or linear light), adjustments layers (curves, griadent map, just having fun with colors) etc.

I use only one brush at 75% opacity, it's pretty opaque and flat. A couple years ago I made a small pack with it and a few other brushes I occassionaly use (collected from a few free packs over the years). I've put it on mediafire if anyone would like to download. My brush is called "yaryar". The pack is an .abr since I use photoshop, so I suppose not many will be able to use it (though I heard you can use PS brushes in procreate?). But here's also a preview of how my brush looks so you can find something similar if you wish:

As for the shading itself - I don't know what to say. It's just painted on one layer, there are no multiply layers or stuff, so there is not much to explain. The angular shapes/strong edges are just something I do. I made a short clip to hopefully illustrate it somewhat:

Art question: I’m very much old school and have only ever used pencil/paper to draw. What do you use to do your stuff? I’m sure you’ve gotten this before so feel free to just link an old ask if that’s easier for you :) I’m just trying to broaden my skills and I have no idea where to start.

It's okay to be "old school" in your approach to art. There's definitely no reason you can't pursue art at higher levels by sticking strictly to pencil and paper. But there are definitely many different options out there for you, so if you get the opportunity to try digital art, or even painting (watercolor, oil, acrylic, etc), I highly recommend it.

For digital art, I use a Wacom Cintiq Pro, but it's expensive and way more tablet than you'd need if you were just starting out. 

If your concern is about whether or not you can draw on the screen (ie the traditional approach to art), there are still a few options for you. Namely, an older or used iPad mini works beautifully with the program Procreate, or often you can find decent alternative options by reviewing lists like this one. <warning, this was just an off-the-cuff google search I did and I don't know anything about the tablets on this list. I recommend looking them up individually for reviews on youtube*

*I have heard Huion is a good brand for inexpensive tablets, but again, I have no personal experience using one. My first tablet was an old 13-inch Wacom with no screen.

For traditional painting, I tend to stick to watercolors these days, but I’ve done some oil painting in the past. Watercolor can be stressful if you’re just diving in, so be patient with yourself if you decide you’d like to try them.

But, if all else fails, don't feel like you can't stick to the basics. Pencil and paper has been my default since day one!

Time-laspe (I tried to download the video and attach it to this post but I think it was too big and my computer is tired because it won't download. That is the link, you can watch it if you'd like too, I know I like to watch art time-laspes. It is around fifteen minutes though, I didn't know how to make it any faster so there's your warning)

(Okay so I'm just now realizing that the part of the video where I used actually colors got cut off 😐And I can't even fix it because I've already deleted the clip off my computer and emptied my recycle bin. I'm so upset now, I'm sorry 😭😭I'm not a tech savy person at all)

You don't have to read this if you don't want to, it's more of an artist's note to myself. If you want to know more of my thought process while doing this then you can read it though.

First, I just want to give credit to the base I used!

Second, I used Krita to draw and Canva to put the video together. I've never really used another drawing app/software thing before (I've used Procreate a few times on my sister's IPad but it's not like I'm going to draw anything South Park on there) so I don't really have anything to compare it too. It's free though so... how much better can you get. The only thing I don't like about it so far is that the fill tool kind of sucks but it's not too bad, you just have to go over the edges to get a solid color (at least from my experience). And I've been using Canva for a while now, I've put together a few videos before but not in a while so I was a little rusty. The only thing I don't like about that is that I have to pay for an upgrade if I want to download a long video.

I started trying to draw seriously in April and now it's July so it's been like two months (?). I haven't posted anything since May I think but I've still been drawing a lot, I just haven't finished anything worth posting up until today.

I started out drawing this thinking it was going to be bad. Then about halfway through I thought it might actually turn out alright. Then I finished it and I kind of hate it. I think it would be much better if I practiced shading and textures but I'm too lazy for that, at least for now.

I hardly know anything about art, whether it be digital or traditional. I don't know anatomy, color theory, perspective, none of it. You can see on the time-lapse that I basically traced the base I used, did the faces and clothes and then colored it and that took me ALL DAY! Granted I had breaks like when I made my lunch and ran over to my grandma's house but other than that, I've been working on this piece (along with Stan but I did most of Stan yesterday, I just colored him this morning).

I have mad respect for every single artist out there because this is so hard... but for some reason I want to keep doing it. I know it's going to be super satisfying to look back on my art work from two years ago and see how much I've improved (hopefully I've improved, please tell me I'll improved)

As you can probably tell, I didn't get everything in the time-laspe. Recording the process was so hard, I tried to do it with Stan yesterday but I barely knew what I was doing and I kept getting called by my mom to do stuff so I had to keep pausing and un-pausing so I gave up and tried again today. I think my computer is worn out by working all day because not only have I been drawing on it all day but I have also been editing the video all day. I really like when artists post time-laspes though because it gives me an idea of their process and it's really nice to watch.

But anyway, I ended up giving Jason eyeliner because one) he's metro, two) I headcanon him wearing eyeliner (same thing with Tweek) and three) he needed a little something MORE to him, if that makes sense. I orginally wasn't going to give him eyeliner because I was afraid he would look too much like Tweek but once the picture was done, I decided they wouldn't look too similar. I also gave Tweek and Jason both freckles because for Jason, it's canon and for Tweek, it's my headcanon for him. You probably can't tell that Tweek has freckles because I made them really faint (on purpose) and I like to think he'd only have a few on his cheeks and nose. I gave Jason a lot though because I'm pretty sure that's how it is in the show. Lastly I forgot to color Jason's shirt in so that's everything that's not on the video.

I think the hardest thing for me was the eyes and the clothes. I have a love-hate relationship drawing eyes. I love looking at how different people draw their eyes but when it comes to drawing my own eyes... yikes 😬Also I think it's the facial proportions that might make this seem off, I think I have a bad habit of making the eyes too big but that's what I've been doing ever since I was a little kid so now if I make the eyes small, it just looks off. And again, I didn't do anything shading so it probably makes the picture look flat. Plus I have no idea what I'm doing.

I also usually have a hard time drawing hair but today I had a pretty easy time doing it. I was really surprised. Also another headcanon of mine for Tweek is that he has platinum blonde hair. I love platinum blonde hair and just blonde hair in general and his hair is SO YELLOW, I feel like if he was older than he'd dye it. Also they are both teens in this picture.

Tweek looks really pasty here, I tried to give him pale skin but I didn't mean for it to be THAT pale.

I think that's all I have to say. If you read this and have any tips for me, I'd love to hear them. I'd love to redraw this in a few months or maybe in a year if I decide to keep drawing, I know there's defiently room for improvement.

Despite all the complaining I just did, I don't HATE this picture per say. I really like my art style, it's simple but cute (imo of course). I feel like if I learned more about shading and learn how to draw faces and clothes better than I'd do a lot better. I think Stan was a lot cuter but this is cute too.

Lastly, ignore the two random dots if you find them, I'm too tired to fix this.
