Tumblr media
Ever since Dean was killed by that douchebag Metatron, he came back a demon. Yep that's right a demon.
The fucking Mark of Cain resurrected him, and he turned into a Knight of Hell.
Sam and Cas left the bunker to find some answers leaving you behind to watch over the joint.
Cas obliged you to stay away from Dean until they figured something out, and in which you heed. The last thing you wanted was to get killed by "Dean".
You were flipping through the pages of the book you were reading, trying to find something that'll get the Mark off of Dean. So far you found nothing, you went through what felt like every book in the library.
You leaned back in your seat, stretching your arms and neck out, sighing, placing your hands over your face, rubbing it. You looked down at your book, trying to concentrate and the sound of plates, and pans moving, makes you snap your neck in the direction of the kitchen.
You get up from your seat, gun ready in hand, walking towards the kitchen. You were certain you were by yourself.
You make it to the kitchen, hiding behind the wall, you jump in, pistol aimed at whatever was in the kitchen.
Nothing, no a soul was in there.
You sigh in annoyance, and walk back to the library.
When you walk in, and see Dean sitting on the table, smirking at you.
You gasp loudly, dropping your gun, you felt your heart fall out of your ass, your hands shaking out of fear.
"Yep this is it. This is how I die" you thought to yourself.
"Hey Y/n" he says, with a malicious look in his eyes.
"Wha-what what are y-you doing h-here??" you studder, out of fear.
He shrugs, "I thought I come by and see you" he stands up from the table.
You stand there frozen in fear as he circles you. Like shark circling its vulnerable prey.
He moves your hair out of your face, tucking it behind your ear. You feel his eyes burning into your flesh.
You can feel the heat of his body radiate behind you. You can feel his breath on your ear, and it sends shivers down your spine.
"Maybe have some fun with you" he purrs into your ear. His hands gripping your hips, pulling them closer to him.
You don't know if you should be terrified, or turned on. But you are definitely fearing for your life.
"Whats wrong y/n?" he teases. "I thought you found me irresistible?"
You don't say anything because you're too scared to even make a sound, all you can do is look at Dean. Even if you didn't know he was a demon, you would tell if he is or not. He attitude and behavior are different from what Dean usually acts like.
He stands in front of you, his hands still gripping your hips, digging his fingers into your jeans.
"Are you gonna kill me??" you mutter out of fear.
He tilts his head to the right, lifting your chin up with his finger.
"No" he says.
That wasn't the response you were expecting.
"But I am looking for some action" he says, his eyes filled with lust.
The next thing you knew, you teleport to your bedroom but it looked different, it was dimly lit and the bed sheets weren't the ones you had on when you woke up that morning.
You turn around, and see Dean slowly approaching you. His next movements catch you by surpise.
He grabs a handful of your hair, pulling your head back, forcing you to look up at him.
You cry out in pain but that only sets fuel to the fire.
"So responsive" he teases, smirking down at you.
With one hand, he undoes your pants and slips his hand between your legs. Cupping you, feeling your wet folds.
"Already wet for me huh?" he purrs. You try your best to hold back your moans.
He removes his hand from your pants, letting go of your hair and pushes you onto the bed.
"Strip" he orders.
"What?" you say, pretending you didn't hear him.
"I said strip. Don't make me tell you again" he orders again.
You do as your told, and undo the rest of your pants, taking your shoes off first. You stand up, and you can feel his eyes on you, as you take off your flannel and tank top. Exposing your lace burgundy bra, and you matching panties. You hear Dean groan in frustration, his hands on your hips pulling you closer to him.
He pushes you down onto the bed again, you look up at him as he stood in front of you, looking down at your body.
He grabs the hem of your panties, and pulls them off of you, tossing them on the floor. The cold air hits your wet core, you were about to close your legs but Dean forces them to stay open.
Shaking his head "Be a good girl for daddy, and get yourself nice and wet for me" he says, with an intense lustful look in his eyes.
You slip two fingers into your wet core, making circular motions on your clit. After a few minutes you look up at Dean, his eyes completely blackened. You didn't realize you were slowly down your movements on your wet pussy.
"Keep going" he orders you. Startling you.
You keep touching yourself, until you feel a slight knot in your stomach. You were so close to cumming when Dean grabs your hand forcing you to stop.
You look up at him, and he's already positioned his head between your legs. He makes intense eye contact with you before eating you out.
He digs his fingers into your hips, pulling you closer to him as he eats your soaking pussy. Your moans get caught in your throat and you are unable to speak, or make any sounds.
Gripping the bed sheets, as his tongue works on your wet folds. His face buried deep between your legs, licking, and sucking at your wet clit.
"A little piece of heaven" he mumbles, not removing his head from between your legs.
"Or Hell" he says lifting his head up, eyes blackened, before going back into your wet folds.
His hands creep up your sides, and he manages to undo your bra. You remove it, tossing it on the floor, his hands cupping your breasts, playing with your erect nipples as he continues to eat you out.
You were so close to cumming in his face when he pulls away. Making you whimper.
"Nah uh uh baby girl. You're gonna cum when I tell you to cum. Is that clear?"
You nod your head "Yes" you say softly.
"Sorry? Didn't catch that"
"Yes daddy" you say softly.
"Still didn't catch that baby girl" he teases.
"Yes daddy yes" you say louder.
"Good girl" he encourages.
He undoes his pants pulling them down, taking off his boxers, and shoes in the process exposing his hard cock. You never realize how big Dean is, it never even occurred to you.
"Like what you see?" he says, with a lustful grin. Standing in front of you completely nude.
You nod you head, biting your lip, feeling yourself getting wetter by the second.
"Use your words" he says sternly. "Do you like what you see?" he asks again with more authority, hovering over you.
"Yes, yes daddy" you say, looking up at him.
He smirks at you, his face very close to yours. Your noses touching.
"Good, because I'm gonna make you scream" he whispers in your ear.
His cock brushes your entrance, he teases you by only inserting, and removing his tip in you. Making you whimper in frustration. You want him inside you. You want him to fuck you. You want him to make you cum.
"Dean, plea-please" you whimper.
"Please what baby girl?" he continues to tease you.
"Fu-fuck me, please" you whimper again.
"Thats all you had to say" he coos.
He shoves his hard cock into your wet core, making your whole body vibrate. His hips colliding with yours, rocking your body. You cry out in pleasure, only for Dean's hand to be wrapped around your throat, restricting your airway.
"Look at you, you look so cute when you're desperate" he teases you again, as his cock drags along your wet walls.
He tightens his grip around your throat, tears run down your cheeks. You start to turn blue a little, and he loosens his grasp around your throat. You gasp loudly for air, and his lips crash against yours. His fingers pressed against your hips. Your hands roam his back as he fucks you, his tongue slipping into your mouth, your tongues wrestling with each other. You can taste yourself in his mouth.
He moves down to your neck, biting and sucking at your skin. Making a bruise. Your fingers tangled in his hair, he grabs another handful of your hair, making your neck more accessible, he continues to bite and suck on it, leaving behind teeth marks, and bruises. You feel his cock twitch in you, fucking you harder than he was before, you scream as his cock penetrates you, and he cums inside you, not allowing you to cum just yet.
"Oohh y/n" he moans, as he rocks your hips against his.
He flips you over onto your stomach, pulling your hair again, forcing you on your hands and knees. He doesn't even give you a warning, or give you a chance to prepare yourself. He shoves his hard cock into your cunt, you scream out in pleasure as he penatrates you again.
"Thats right y/n" he moans. "Scream, let it out"
He shoves his cock into you again, making you scream, and cry out again.
"Dea-Dean please" you plead.
"Please what y/n?"
"I'm gonna-gonna cum" you whimper.
"Not until I tell you to" he tells you sternly.
You whine at his response, you need to cum, you can't hold back much longer. "Please" you whine.
He stops all his movements, and he spanks your left cheek making you yelp. You know there's gonna be a mark and its gonna hurt to sit for awhile.
"For every time you whine, you will get a punishment" he tells in a threatening manner, spanking you again on the same spot.
"Do you understand?" he asks, pulling your hair back.
"Yes, yes daddy" you say, breathless.
"Good" he says.
He continues to fuck you tight cunt. You feel his cock twitch inside you again, and before you know it he cums all over your walls for the 2nd time.
He moans loudly, pulling your head back by your hair. He continues to fuck you from behind.
"Come on y/n, cum for me" he commands you.
You arch your back, and you let yourself go, cumming all over his cock. He eases his grip on your hair. Gripping your hips, pressing them against his.
He pulls out of you, a clung string of his cum on his tip, and your cunt.
You fall on your side, rolling onto your back. Dean collapsing on top of you.
He sighs loudly, "I needed that, and so did you". He kisses your lips, rolling off of you.
You hear the bunker door open, followed by Sam calling out for you.
"Y/n!?!" he calls out.
You sit up, and look over to Dean who is now gone along with his clothes.

Code of the Hills
Tianshan fanfic, au set in the Ozark region of the U.S.
“Where’s your partner Red?”Guan Shan reigned in his panic a second too late and Click ate it up with a shit eating grin. The pain when it came was delayed, one blessing of being too fucked to walk straight enough if he wanted to. Guan Shan spit a mouth full of blood straight into Click’s leering face. Guan Shan knew his eye would be swollen for a week. If he made it past tonight.
- Warnings: Drug use, violence, dirty cops, lots of cursing, angst -

Guan Shan lapped at the blood pouring from his nose. He couldn’t taste shit, not with his gums numb and Click telling him to take another bump.
“This is Grade A shit Red. Where’d you say you get it from ‘gain?”
Guan Shan took the offered bump – his third in the about fifteen minutes he had been with Click in this fucking dingy-ass laughable excuse for a backroom at the local watering hole. He hadn’t had this much coke in years and it was already fucking with him, just like Click wanted it to.
“Told you being a cop came with perks.” Guan Shan turned and hocked a wad of blood and snot onto the floor.
Click laughed and hit Guan Shan between the shoulder blades with an open-palmed slap that was just north of friendly. “Get this man a whiskey.”
“Did’n think you’d come back te this place Red.”
Guan Shan nodded to the women who proffered him a whiskey and took a gulp.
“Ever the polite man. Sam’s got tits from here to tomorrow and you’re on better behavior than the priest during Sunday service.” Click dropped his voice “Ne’ver believed ‘em but you don’t do yourself no favors Red.”
Guan Shan sucked at his teeth. “Saving myself for Jesus.”
Click burst out into a laughing fit. “Got’ damn Red. You haven’t changed a bit.” He played with the bag of coke idly. “So you got more of this shit?”
“More and then some.” Guan Shan nodded and pulled out a cigarette. He could feel his fingers going unsteady and his words slurring, tongue refusing to cooperate.
Click smiled and it was deadly. “Sure thing Red. Sounds like we have some stuff to talk about. Why don’t you come back with us? We’ll drive you.”
Guan Shan didn’t respond. Just lit his cigarette and let the group of good ‘ol boys half push, half pull him out of the backroom, bantering like old friends, smiling like sharks. He was manhandled out of the bar and into the dark parking lot, shoved into a truck and closed behind the thunk of American steel.
-
He Tian sat nursing his beer. A tittering group out on a girl’s night tried to grab his attention for a little while but his best sad and broken act had them off and dancing. He was alone with those words playing through his head.
They’re gonna take me to the back. They won’t do anything at the bar so just go in a little while after me. Keep your damn head down. I mean it. No flirting, no stories, no chatting up the locals. No one can remember you were there. You need to be forgettable. Just wait and blend in. They’ll take me to Click’s place.
Follow without them knowing. Shouldn’t be too hard, they’ll be fucked up and won’t be expecting you. Then it’s your call. I don’t know how many there will be. If you can get the situation under control, do it. But if not just leave me. Finding out where this guy is based is more important.
They did come out, just like Guan Shan said. He Tian shrunk as best he could into the corner. Guan Shan’s copper eyes were bloodshot and he was stumbling. The group was rowdy, shoving him with a little too much joy. A cajoling on the sharp edge of vicious. A smear of blood decorated Guan Shan’s upper lip and his pupils were pinpoints.
He Tian waited until they were through the door before slipping out. He caught sight of Guan Shan being shoved into a beater pickup with truck nuts. Gritting his teeth, he willed himself to wait. It wouldn’t do Guan Shan any good to tip them off.
The drive was easy, following the road as it dipped and rose, hemmed in by the thick woods broken only by sudden bursts of sheer white limestone breaking through at odd angles, ragged and proud.
The moon was out and bright enough that He Tian could keep his headlights off and follow at a distance. They drove fast so it was easy to see they were turning when they slowed in a sudden tire-squealing crawl. The sides of their cars brushed the undergrowth creeping over everything.
So this was it. Asscrack of nowhere. Cicadas called out in an unending whine.
-
Guan Shan didn’t even try to catalogue where they were. He was too fucked up and anyways, Click was twitchy in a way that didn’t bode well for Guan Shan’s health.
They turned onto some hidden road and crawled through a winding path before the trucks stopped outside a meth den. The house was probably nice enough at one point. Dogs barked from somewhere and someone was yanking Guan Shan out of his seat. He was manhandled inside past a living room with a flickering TV into the kitchen.
“Feel like home Red?”
Guan Shan grimaced. “Don’t see why you dragged me here for.”
Click laughed. “You can stop playing dumb boy. This is some goodass shit you brought me, so I’ll thank you for that little gift. But there’s no fucking way that’s what you came out here all the way into the goddamn boones for.”
Guan Shan let one of Click’s men pull his arms behind him and zip tie them together by the wrist. He was too tired and sideways feeling. If he was going to get the shit kicked out of him anyways he might as well cooperate enough to prolong the inevitable.
“See’in as you aren’t saying nothing I’m gonna go out on a big-ass limb and say you agree?” Click said.
Guan Shan didn’t respond.
Click grunted out a laugh and kicked a metal chair over to Guan Shan. “Take a seat Red.”
With a hard stare fixed on Click, Guan Shan set his jaw and sat slowly.
“That’s a good boy. I didn’t think you’d go so easy. You’re either a complete dumbass or you have a death wish.” Click turned to the one guy who had followed them in, a big motherfucker bulked up from beers and red meat. “Tape ‘im down.”
The brute grabbed a roll of duct tape off the gritty counter and dutifully taped each leg to a leg of the chair and ran a few around Guan Shan’s chest and the chair back for good measure. The rip of duct tape and a whining light filled a tense silence.
It had been too long since he’d said something, but it was so hard to form words. The world swam and Guan Shan’s heart beat uncomfortably hard in his chest, urged to flutter faster than hummingbird wings by uppers that felt worse than one too many cups of coffee.
Click walked forward and leaned in close, the smell of stale cigarettes hitting Guan Shan’s nostrils like a mule kick to the chest.
“Where’s your partner Red?”
Guan Shan reigned in his panic a second too late and Click ate it up with a shit eating grin.
The pain when it came was delayed, one blessing of being too fucked to walk straight enough if he wanted to. Guan Shan spit a mouth full of blood straight into Click’s learing face. Guan Shan knew his eye would be swollen for a week. If he made it past tonight.
“Oh there it is. There’s our red-headed devil.” Click hacked out a deep laugh that turned into a coughing fit as he wiped the blood off his face with a black paisley handkerchief. Guan Shan glared as best he could and Click just leaned against the counter and lit a cigarette. Silence settled in.
“Bum me a square.” The words came gravely out of Guan Shan’s mouth but he was satisfied that his voice didn’t waver.
Click just laughed again, “I ain’t sitt’en here holding a smoke for you.”
“Gimme another bump then.”
Click’s expression turned sour. “You wanna be high for this Red? You’re a little shit, you know that? ‘Course you know that.” Click leaned forward. “You didn’ think we’d figure out you was with the DEA because you’re,” Click punctuated his words with a well-placed kick, “a dumbass,” another heel kick, the leather of his boots catching the ridges of Guan Shan’s ribs, “‘lil shit.” There was a special type of venom in the last word and the final kick that punctuated it was straight to Guan Shan’s gut.
Whatever was left in Guan Shan’s stomach came up onto the yellowing linoleum floor. The metal chair squealed halfway across the kitchen with the kicks.
Click looked pissed. “You can sing now or later, I don’t give a fuck Red. But we’re gonna get every little bit of information out of your dumb ass about why the fuckin’ DEA is out in the fuckin’ boones bothern’ us good folk.” Click placed his lit cigarette between his lips, nubby yellow crack teeth showing for a moment before he folded his arms and grimaced. “But first we have some other business.”
Click’s gaze flicked up to the mountain of a man that had been idly standing by like he was at a particularly boring church service. Guan Shan’s heart sank.
“Go out there and find ‘im.”
Guan Shan was knee deep into his next lie before he could think about it too hard, stemming panic from working its way in.
“Fuck off Click. I knew you’d be cautious but this is fuck’in overkill. That coke’s real, how’d you think I get it? Ask the DEA all polite-like? Fuck-off man. It’s just you ‘in me and you’re sending Brick House here out there to crash around in the dark chasing after shadows. You’ve been hitt’in the pipe too hard. Melt’n you’re brain and shit.”
Click seemed to consider Guan Shan for a moment and his tall lackey hung between leaving and staying, waiting for the verdict.
“So you admittin’ you’re with the DEA Red?” He took a deep inhale of his cigarette, the cherry lighting up with an audible crackling sound.
“Yeah. How’d you think I get this stuff? We busted couple hundred pounds of the shit I brought you tonight. And no one checks on it after it’s been logged. Everyone in that department is dipp’in into the shit we grab. Usually just for recreational purposes. But I can get you set up with a ‘lil bit here and there. Weed. Crack. Coke. Party pills. We get the big hauls ‘cause we go after the distributors. And there’s extra in it for you if you can give me some tips every once ‘n awhile.”
Guan Shan wasn’t surprised by the fist that connected with his face. He was really gonna look like shit once all this was through.
“You got’ damn motherfucker!” Click fisted his shirt, dragging him and the metal chair forward with a horrendous squeal against the floor.
“Did you just ask me to become an informant for the fucking cops? After everything I’ve done for you Red? Gave you a fuck’in home? Took you in? Then you go dissapear’n and we think you’re dead.” Click was really yelling now, his spit spraying over Guan Shan’s face. “We spilled blood over you Red. And then you show up fifteen-fucking years later looking like the day you disappeared and you have the fuckin’ balls to just think you gonna be welcome back here? You’re dead to us, Red.”
Click turned to mountain man. “Find his fucking partner. He’s lurk’in out there somewhere in the woods.”
“Wait, no, Click I’ll tell you whatever the fuck you want but if he’s out there he’s just look’in for me. He don’ know nothin and it’s not gonna help you much to have to deal with two of us. You’re gon’ have a harder time covern’ up two miss’in people. He ain’t even from around here and you know who they’ll start com’in after first.”
“Oh I know alright,” Click growled and brought his knee up hard into Guan Shan “I know ‘cause you’re here and we seen you come into town.”
Guan Shan was spluttering for breath, gasping, winded as he remembered the fucking truck stop. He Tian kissing him in the beat up Toyota and Guan Shan unwilling to push him off. Static of a station on the radio going in and out and crumpled chip bags crunching as He Tian leaned over the armrest.
Click stilled and Guan Shan lost the thread. Click had flicked open a knife large enough to skin a deer but before Guan Shan could tense the knife was cutting him free from the chair and Click was hauling Guan Shan to his feet.
The knife was back into Click’s pocket before Guan Shan could process what the hell was happening and he shoved roughly out onto the front porch. Moths and June bugs flew through the muggy air outside, circling the porch light. Guan Shan heard the cold click of Click’s gun as he cocked it and pressed the cool metal to the side of Guan Shan’s head.
“Come on out ‘for I splatter your partner’s brains all over my porch.” Click yelled the words into the darkness beyond the porch.
Guan Shan squeezed his eyes shut and grit his teeth. Keep to the plan. Keep to the plan. Start your mother fucking car and get out of here. Get out of here.
His prayers were in vain though. He Tian emerged into the porch light silently, hands up.
It had been quiet, which was good. Most of the group had broken off to go party somewhere or pick up more beer and drugs, obviously bored by having their night of partying cut short. That left Click with another giant of a man inside. Easy. He just had to wait for the right moment to get Guan Shan the fuck out of there.
He Tian made a loop of the house, quietly checking if the back door was unlocked or if any windows were open. The house was locked up but again, it wouldn’t be a problem. He just had to wait for one of them to come out for a smoke or grab something from their car.
It was too risky to just break in. He Tian settled in and listened. His fingers itched for a cigarette. He could hear the muffled voice of Click talking. That was good too. Hopefully that’s all they were doing, talking.
He Tian’s first indication that things had gone south was the sound of metal squealing and Click yelling. Someone grunted and retched, a wet splattering sound punctuated by coughs and gasps. He Tian saw red. Breath. Breath. Stay calm and wait. You’ll put him in more danger if you break in now.
He Tian wanted to move, adrenaline beating a tattoo against his veins. He was shaking with it. He Tian dug his nails against his palm, trying to distract his body from the need to move. It was a beat too late when he noticed things had gone quiet.
The front door burst open and He Tian almost bolted for the assholes right then and there. Guan Shan was a bloody mess, barely able to stand up. His eyes were already swelling, purple bruises forming shapes Rorschach would be proud of. His dark shirt was wet with blood and the thin skin above his eyes was split and still flowing.
But despite how much he wanted to raise his own gun and fill these fuckers with enough lead to down an elephant, he couldn’t take the chance. Not with Click pressing the muzzle of agun into Guan Shan’s bloody temple.
“Come on out ‘for I splatter your partner’s brains all over my porch.”
He Tian walked out with his hands up. Guan Shan made a noise somewhere between anger and despair.
He had one chance at this. One chance before the mountain of a man next to Click got to He Tian, patted him down, took his gun and then hauled He Tian inside to share in a few miserable hours as a punching bag before becoming catfish food.
“There you are pretty boy.”
He Tian showed concern, fear, anxiety. Let them mask his face. Let them make Click think he was safe.
“Din’ think I would have such a fun night! Your partner here is a fuck’in dumbass. That’s it,  nice and slow.”
He Tian kept eye contact and suddenly, with enough slipping to seem real, tripped. And there it was. With the sudden movement Click reacted before thinking, swinging his gun from Guan Shan to He Tian.
The rest was a blur of instinct and a prayer. He Tian rolled and pulled his gun, aimed and fired.
It was over fast. Guan Shan stood stock still, trying not to pull Click one way or the other. It was only after Click slumped down and the mountain man crumpled did Guan Shan realize he was splattered in blood that wasn’t his.
It didn’t matter though because He Tian was there, his hands all over Guan Shan. A quick flick of a knife and Guan Shans hands were free.
“You shouldn’t have done that.”
He Tian didn’t respond, simply went about checking Guan Shan over, pulling his shirt up and grimacing at the damage splayed across Guan Shan’s body, head bowed. Guan Shan could feel He Tian’s hands shaking where they balled up in his shirt.
“Hey, hey, come on. Let’s get out of here.”
He Tian’s jaw clenched. “You said they wouldn’t do anything.”
“Well I might have under calculated a few things.”
“A few–” He Tian shuddered, cutting himself off and Guan Shan’s world swooped for a second as He Tian swung him into a bridal carry headed for the car.
“I can carry myself, hey!” He Tian had Guan Shan in the car and was around and in the driver’s seat in one swift motion. It started up on the first try and He Tian was peeling out of the gravel lot and hurtling down the dirt road.
“Whoah, whoah, He Tian, where’s the fire? Slow the fuck down, we still gotta stay low.”
He Tian slammed the car to the stop. His knuckles were white around the steering wheel.
“Is it your first time? You know, doing that.” The words came out as a raspy wheeze and Guan Shan winced. He definitely had a cracked rib.
“Yes, sweetheart, it’s my first time dragging you as a bloody pulp out from a meth house where two motherfucking shit stains were ready to carve you up for entertainment.”
Guan Shan didn’t know why he suddenly felt like fighting but he dug his heels in. “It was our only way in, and now we know Click’s not the one who’s been mixing up the fake pain pills that have been killin’ people.”
A muscle jumped in He Tian’s jaw. The truck lurched forward. “We’re going to the hospital.”
“No we fuckin’ ain’t! Get your head on straight, He Tian, we’ve got a good half hour before the rest of Click’s ‘lil possy comes back from wherever they’ve been gettin fucked up, finds two cold bodies in the dirt and finds me not there and puts two an’ two together.” Guan Shan reached for the cigarettes He Tian kept in the cup holder. “What we’re doin’ is going back to our hotel, packin’ up our shit fast as we can, gettin’ back in this truck and driving as far away from this god forsaken place as we can.”
He Tian didn’t respond. Muggy summer air whipped around them through the open windows.
They rolled into town and Guan Shan relaxed when He Tian turned towards the motel.
“Stay here.” He Tian was out of the truck and headed into the motel before Guan Shan could say anything. He slumped into the seat and lit another cigarette.
Back on the road, orange street lights blurred by as He Tian pushed 100 down the highway. Guan Shan was crashing hard, his whole body ached and he knew tomorrow would be worse. He lit another cigarette, too tired to do anything else, too wired to sleep.
“You’re quitting this case.” He Tian’s voice barely rose above the hum of the car hurtling down the highway.
“I’m not talkin’ ‘bout this right now.”
“They could of killed you.”
“Yeah, and they coulda killed you too. I told you this isn’t like the city. The hills have their own code and these people live by it. Ain’t anyone coming to help hill folk.”
He Tian snagged the pack of cigarettes, depositing them out of reach in his car door. “So you’ve got to, is that it?”
Guan Shan grunted. “I don’t know He Tian. I just know people are dying and I have connections here and I’m gonna use them so we can stop the son of a bitch who’s been poisoning people.”
The cover of night slipped from around them, the first hints of dawn lightening the sky.
Guan Shan was somewhere between waking and fever dreams when He Tian spoke again.
“So what’s our next move.”
Guan Shan cracked his left eye open, the right one was too swollen to see out of.
“You’re sticking along with this thing? You ‘don seem like you like it much.”
He Tian snorted as though it was obvious. “I just killed two men, Guan Shan, I should think it’s obvious that I’m in this thing.”
Guan Shan closed his eye and hummed. “We’re headed in deep then, to a place where the rest of the world doesn’t exist. Where we’ll be alone. You ready for that?”
“Lead the way Red.”

Since we've been talking about them so much, for you followers celebration, here is your prompt: Dean and Cas go diving with sharks!
Dean closed his eyes, the smell of the sea drifting through the air and tickling his nose. It was like a slice of Heaven; the sand beneath his toes and the sun warming his slightly damp hair. A soft bump against his shoulder broke Dean from his daze and he opened his eyes.
“Hey, husband,” Cas said, holding out a drink with a little umbrella in it.
Dean reached out, took the drink from Cas’ hand, and yanked him down onto the beach towel so he could kiss him long and slow. “I’m never going to get tired of you calling me your husband,” Dean said, a soft smile creeping across his face.
Cas chuckled, pressing another quick kiss to Dean’s lips before pulling away. “I have a surprise for you.”
“Another surprise? Cas, you’ve been spoiling me this entire time.”
“It’s our honeymoon, I’m entitled to spoil you. Do you trust me?” Cas asked.
“Always,” Dean said, linking their fingers together and bringing Cas’ hand up to his lips; placing a kiss on the wedding band he’d slid onto Cas’ finger a few days ago at their wedding.
A few minutes later, Cas was hauling Dean up and dragging him across the beach to one of the more secluded bays. Dean could see a boat and piles of diving gear just off the shore.
“Cas, babe, what’s going on?” Dean asked.
“You’re always talking about how much you love sharks and how much they fascinate you. So I arranged for us to go diving with some Caribbean reef sharks and blacktip sharks,” Cas said.
“You. Are. The. Love. Of. My. Life,” Dean said, emphasizing each word with kisses.
Cas laughed, wrapping his arms around Dean’s waist. “So that’s a yes then? You want to go diving with the sharks?”
“Oh hell yes.”
“Let’s go then,” Cas said, leading Dean towards the boat.
Thirty minutes later, they were both fully dressed in their diving gear and were jumping off the boat into the ocean. After being led by a professional diver down into the water, it didn’t take long before they were using bait to carefully draw the sharks in.
A small blacktip shark bumped against Dean, slowly moving towards the bait the professional driver was holding out. “Holy shit,” Dean muttered, turning to look at Cas in awe.
“Can we touch them?” Cas asked their guide.
“Go for it. Just be careful, and avoid the mouth.”
With a nod, Cas reached out and grabbed Dean’s hand, guiding their joined hands to run over the back of the blacktip. Dean laughed happily, moving their hands gently over the fins and down towards the sharks underside.
Soon, several more blacktips and a couple Caribbean reef sharks had swam up. They even spotted a nurse shark moving across the ocean floor nearby. Dean and Cas took turns gently touching the sharks and letting their guide teach them how to feed the sharks in a safe way.
By the end of the trip, Dean was smiling so hard his face hurt. When they got back onto the boat an hour later, Dean pulled Cas into a deep and passionate kiss. “God, I love you. Best honeymoon ever. Thank you,” he said against Cas’ mouth.
“I love you, more,” Cas said, running his fingers through Dean’s wet hair and shivering when he felt the cold metal of Dean’s ring settle against the back of his neck.

A Birthday to Remember
“Mama, slow down! I’m coming, I just parked! What do you mean, the bathroom is flooding now too? Didn’t you shut off the water? I showed you how, don’t you remember? Why didn't you grab Callen? That’s why he lives upstairs, to play building manager when I’m not here!” Deeks tucked his cell phone between his ear and his shoulder in an attempt to dig his keys from his jeans pocket whilst jogging along the sidewalk.
“Dammit!” He cursed as the keyring dropped to the ground. “No Mama, not you, I dropped the keys. I’m coming as fast as I can, you know you caught me mid-surf. I’m gonna kill Callen for not being there the one time something happens!”
Deeks reached the entrance to his still-unnamed bar and fumbled the keys toward the lock. “I’m here, trying to get in right now, I’m hanging up. Oh my God, Mama! I’ll see you in ten seconds! Bye!” He jammed the phone back into his pocket and unlocked the door. Taking a deep breath, he ran his fingers through his hair, preparing himself for the tornado that was his mother on the other side of the door, and pondering how his brand new bar was already breaking down. Once he’d calmed and collected himself, he swung open the door and entered.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!”
Deeks jumped back against the door, the surprise having succeeded in startling its target. Nearly two dozen people stood in front of the red felted pool table, all beaming at Deeks. Front and center was Kensi, who rushed over, face lit up with glee.
“Yes! We did it! We surprised you! You had no idea!” Kensi said, poking teasingly at Deeks’s torso until he laughed along with her. Reaching up over his shoulders, Kensi placed a gentle kiss on his lips. “Happy 40th, babe! I love you.”
Deeks returned the sentiment, happiness replacing his previous anxieties. “I love you too. And yes, I had no idea. How did you manage?”
“Many secret squirrels.” Kensi gestured to her co-conspirators across the room and said squirrels laughed. “So, run upstairs. You can shower up there, and clean clothes are already in the bathroom. Hurry up, or we’ll eat all the food!”
Deeks passed through the crowd, receiving each of his guests briefly with promises to catch up post-shower and dashed upstairs.
When he came back down to the bar, Deeks paused in the doorway, fully taking in the surprise he’d been given. He watched his Kensi, his world, talking with his mom and hers, before excusing herself to the rest of the party. The mothers continued talking, having become close, and Bertie took the opportunity to lead Julia on a tour of the facility.
Deeks chuckled at the inflatable walker hanging off the shark and the “Over the Hill” signs plastered around it. He smiled at his friend Kip, extravagantly regaling Sam and Callen with stories of basketball groupies gone crazy. Bates and a few LAPD rookies were glued to the NFL playoff game on the television. There was an impromptu NSA vs DEA billiards battle going on between Mikey and Talia, who both looked to be shooting tequila as well as pool. He made a mental note to either break up that fight or join in later.
Thankful for all the people in his life, Deeks was about to decide who to approach first, when Eric caught his eye and waved.
Deeks made his way across the room, joining Kensi and the Wonder Twins at the buffet line. “Riddle me this, why am I footing the bill for my own birthday bash?” He stole Kensi’s beer bottle and took a swig. Nell and Eric looked guiltily at their own fancy alcoholic concoctions they were enjoying.
“Market research!” Nell insisted. “We’re trying to establish your signature drink,” she giggled, obviously already affected by her libations.
Kensi grabbed her beer back from Deeks. “Don’t you worry about that. Your mom and I are taking care of it, and none of it will mess up your precious inventory system!”
The foursome made their way through the buffet line, before sitting at a booth in the corner. Kensi sat down her plate, then ran off for two beers - one for Deeks and another for herself. “To the birthday boy!” She said upon her return to the table.
“Hear hear!” The room cheered. Drinks clinked, and Deeks cringed, fearing broken glass. But nothing broke, and celebrations continued. Kensi settled in the booth beside her fiance. Deeks wrapped his arm around her and gave her temple a kiss.
“Thank you. This is amazing, and I'm so lucky to have you,” he said. At his words, Kensi snuggled in tighter.
“Anything for you, Deeks. Happy birthday.”
Not sure where this entirely came from, but I managed to churn it out in less than half a day! So I’m gonna call that a win! It also works as a piece for one of @densi-mber writing prompts, so I’ll post it there too a little later (and the usual places as well).
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEEKS!!

How is time marked/measured in Star Wars
Short Answer- by retconning EVERYTHING and starting fresh lol
just kidding
Long Answer-
ok so up til April 25th 2014 (the decanonizing of all now legends material) books would be published with a symbol
Tumblr media
^ this would be in the books, with the era the content took place in marked
now for a more IN DEPTH explanation we have the “Eras of Galactic History” which I’ll give quick explinations here
1- Before the Republic (37,000-25,000 BBY) This Era Explores the early days of the “Je’daii Order” (the precursor to the Jedi/Sith) and explores the Force during their time on Tython (A planet in the deep core, the origin of the now known to be Jedi)
Space Travel in this time period is limited though The Ruthless Rakatan Infinite Empire spans the reaches of the known worlds using Dark Force techniques to power their advanced technology and subjugate their neighbors and far reaching portions of the galaxy. (Hence the name Infinite Empire)
Though this era spanned 12,000 years, not many sources were made for it. Which is a shame due to the fact this would have been a perfect breeding ground for “pre star wars” types of content for all to enjoy
2- The Old Republic (25,000 - 1000 BBY)
(My favorite Era...well one of them)
This era explored the earlier days of the Galactic Republic (EARLY EARLY- like...holy crap this thing probably wont work but hey why not try regardless right?) During this time the Jedi Order are the protectors of the Republic are constantly (like...its a soap opera at this point) at war with the Sith. Multiple Sith Empires rise and fall during this period. Each one generally caused by in fighting as well as outward battles with the Republic/Jedi Order
This Era spans 24,000 years yes but most of its content is now Legends, not Canon. My personal Favorites include the KOTOR games (not the TOR game just the two KOTOR games)
3- Rise of the Empire Era/Clone Wars/End of the Republic- 1000- 0 BBY)
Soooo yeah...ok what we have here, is like the waning time of the republic. They claim it is the seemingly golden age, buuuut during this time Darth Bane and his not gonna die mentality creates the Rule of Two, an important philosophy for the Sith that allowed him to begin his plan of REVENGE to take back the galaxy. This culminates over 1000 years to Darth Sidious ushering in the Clone Wars which begins the end of the Reublic and the beginning of the FIRST Galactic Empire.
Personally this era has a LOT of canon and legends content to consume so obviously if you wish to know- first take the canon cause its more relevant and can be more informative BUT the legends content is beautiful and orchestrates HOW the Sith were able to not only survive for 1000 years but do so RIGHT UNDER THE JEDI’s noses. Which that in and of its self was the kick in the teeth of the millennia.
 4- Rebellion Era/Galactic Civil War (0BBY-5ABY)
*ABY= After the Battle of Yavin
With the Republic gone, the Empire a force to control all- the Alliance to Restore the Republic forms under the leadership of Senators Mon Mothma and others from worlds who did not wish to see the Galaxy put to heel under the boot of the Emperor and his Dark Lord Vader. This is where Luke Skywalker is introduced and our Main Trilogy takes place. Over 5 years MANY MANY MANY books, games, movies, etc have been created. most of which legends now but still worth the exploring
5- New Republic Era (5-25 ABY)
YAY this era was fun like ya wanna know what is worse than fighting an Evil Empire to bring peace to the universe? FIGHTING ITS REMNANTS WHO JUST DONT WANNA DIE! (Seriously, the Empire is like cockroaches, you stomp on it, but its like BITCH I AINT GONE TRY AGAIN!” This era shows our heroes Luke and company dealing with the now criminal warlords and remnant leaders of the fractured Empire trying to revive and recapture the galaxy from under the Newly established New Republic government. Exmaples of the threats include Ysanne Isard, Zsinj, GRAND FUCKIN ADMIRAL GOD DAMN THRAWN (this is my favorite villain of star wars, dude is perfect) and Admiral Daala.
There are more but these ones are like THE BIG ONES worth a damn.
Not only this but Luke gets a wife, Leia/Han have KIDS, and the Jedi Order is revived under Luke and we get to see a chance at fixing the mistakes of the past (politically with the Republic AND philosophically with the Jedi Order)
6- New Jedi Order Era (25-37 ABY)
ooooooo so ya know how there is a “jumping the shark” thing in most media, once you hit this you usually are gone and cant come back? THANKFULLY this era wasn’t it, this was the “sounds like it...but actually turned out good”
We have an EXTRA Galactic Threat (The Yuuzhan Vong) a species immune to the Force invdaing the galaxy and using their massive forces nearly win. It is only because of the New Republic, New Jedi Order, Imperial Remnant and the Chiss Ascendancy do any shreds of hope become possible. Now I’m not saying “PEACE IS ACHIEVED” its more a “....fight them now fight each other later?” moments that everyone nods to.
7- Legacy Era (37 ABY--)
This is (in my opinion) the “jump the shark era) not because bad stuff becomes made
but because it had a CLEARLY defined beginning...but no end.
The Galactic Allliance and New Jedi Order deaing with legacy of war and peace, crises threaten to split everything, like yeah.
This era (again in my opinion) contains one of the best story arcs which follows Jacen Solo and his journey in the Force.
100 years AFTER Jacen’s story though, its Sith Order is back, they rule and Cade Skywalker is the LAST remaining Skywalker (we hope) and apparently he’s the only hope for the Jedi Order.
SO I hope this helps in terms of what the OLD Legends publishing era was. this as I said- no longer is ALL the Expanded Universe is. There is Canon and Legends, predominantly ALLLLL this is just Legends, as above at the top- in 2014, Disney retconned everything in the EU. Not a HORRIBLE choice but just means we now have all the room to grow outside the movies.
Hopefully this has been informative and helpful in your journey into star wars lore <3

Oh shit I’m deaed
“Olivia! Olivia!?” Lobby yelled as she ran down the dirt path. She looked around at the various generals lying on the ground that had been run over by the ship the ninja had made. No Olivia. After checking the path the ninja had taken, she ran over to the house Olivia and her had been staying in.
She got in and searched the entire place, still no Olivia. ‘Okay- she was in the front of the pack.. I checked the path, checked here.. Where could she- the volcano…’ Lobby trembled and backed up a few steps. ‘She was up there- right there with Garmadon.. She can’t be.. Gone..’
Lobby felt her eyes start to sting and turned out of the house. ‘She has to be somewhere.. I’ll find her..’ She went over to the first person she saw, General Omar.
“O-omar? Have you seen Olivia? I know she was in the front and at the volcano.. Did she- Did you see her down here again while the ninja were getting away?” Lobby asked. Omar took the shark helmet off and shook the dust out of his hair before replying.
“I believe so.. I know a lot of us got pushed in the volcano but she seems smarter than to let that happen.. If you’ve already checked here, maybe check outside of the gates. If she was desperate to get at them she might’ve tried to chase them out.” Omar said. He tried to get up but ended up falling back down. His leg seemed to be bent the wrong way slightly.
“H-here..” Lobby said and extended her hand out to him. He grabbed it and she helped him up. “Thanks for that suggestion..”
Omar nodded at her and she ran towards the gates. The tall logs that separated them from the rest of the jungle were knocked down in some places. The rest of the wall seemed to be close to collapsing as well. The work of hundreds of generals over dozens of years, ruined in one attack. Not just the city, people too. The ninja had no regard for the people they hurt and killed here..
She took in a deep breath to avoid getting to angry and wasted time. She looked at one of the logs that was still standing, a watchtower positioned near the gates. There were scratch marks in it, very familiar scratches. She put her hand up to the marks, they were about as far apart as Olivia’s arms were at full length. ‘Did she climb all of the way up there..? I didn’t know she could do that..’
The marks at least made her feel a little more helpful. She looked up to the top of the watchtower, no one seemed to be up there. She tried to climb up the way Olivia did but couldn’t. ‘She’s stronger than I thought..’
She ran up the steps all of the way up to the top but Olivia wasn’t there. She looked out of the window and couldn’t see anything through the darkness at first. The torches on the wall only helped them see so far. The only place she hadn’t searched was outside now. She slid out of the window facing outside. She dropped down and grabbed on to the windowsill before grabbing onto a log and climbing down. After she was close enough to the ground, she let go and rolled out of the fall.
“Olivia! Are you out here?” Lobby asked. All that she heard was the rustling of the leaves before hearing a weak groan. She looked around again, still not seeing anything. She cautiously took a step towards where she heard it. “Olivia..?”
Something inched out from behind a bush. It was Olivia. Half of her face seemed bloody and bruised and the eye on that side was closed. She dragged herself out of the bush using only one arm. She stopped and weakly looked at Lobby with her good eye. Lobby gasped and ran over. She grabbed Olivia’s hand. It was cold.
“I-i think I got the green one’s arm at least.. I-it’s all I could do before Garmadon hit me with the ship..” Olivia forced out and coughed. Lobby shook her head and looked at all of Olivia’s injuries. Half of her body seemed bruised, she guessed that that was the side that the ship hit her, her arm was broken as well as one of her legs and one of the claws on her foot was broken off.
“O-oh Olivia..” Lobby sniffled and tried to get some of the blood off of her face. She ended up just smearing it. She put her other arm under Olivia and lifted her up a little. Olivia weakly squeezed Lobby’s hand. “I’ll get you back inside and fix you.. Y-you’ll be okay..”
Olivia shook her head and looked up at Lobby.
“I-it hurts to move.. Really bad…” Olivia said. “A-and what can we really do.. None of us are exactly doctors and I saw a lot of people get hurt in there..”
“I-i don’t like where you’re going with this.. You’ll be okay..”
“O-okay okay..” Olivia sighed. “I can’t move myself to far.. So you’ll have to get me inside..”
Lobby nodded and lifted her up as gently as possible. Oliva still winced and let out a small whine of pain. Lobby quietly apologized and started to run over to one of the gaps in the wall. Olivia seemed to be growing drowsy very quickly.
“Olivia.. Stay awake and talk to me..” Lobby said. Olivia opened one of her eyes slightly before closing it again. Lobby shook her but she still didn’t open her eyes. She leaned closer to Lobby and took comfort in her warmth. Lobby ran faster to the gap in the wall but she felt Olivia finally go limp in her arms.

Wow your story of the lotus of the night is amazing would you be willing to make a part 2?
Never thought of it before, but I never say no to any of your requests, so yeah. P/s: this is longer than I expected, had fun writing it too but still, super long for a prompt.
I’m in trouble, Officer.
(Word count: 9,151)

It was Sunday morning, long, cold winds and empty avenues. It was October, but Gotham did have her way with the weather, flipping the hands and bringing winter to her town sooner than usual. Today was his day off, a perfect occasion to snuggle deep down in the layers of heavy blankets and sleep till noon, or simply do an old time movie marathon that his shifts had taken his time from watching. But, of course, it was also a perfect time for Bruce to find and call him back to Gotham.
Wayne Manor still looked the same. Ancient, big, exorbitant, and cold. Cold even with all the memories of running down the endless halls, of swinging between chandeliers and sliding down the long handle of stairs. Dick still faintly remembered waking up at night, tugging the blanket onto his shoulder and walking through the number of old painting to get to Bruce’s chamber, to slide down against his door and just sleep like that. Born in a circus, to live in a huge mansion with just two people, it was fated that soon Dick would find his wings and fly away.
And he did.
“Ah, Master Dick. It’s been such a long time.” Alfred greeted him, still looking the same, but undeniably older. 7 years had worn him out, if not caused by Bruce’s stubbornness.
“It has.” Dick replied and watched the old man standing there eyeing him like he wanted to say something more. His wrinkled eyes flickered up and down his face, hunting for every change since their last encounter. Very much had changed indeed, for the 17 year old Dick Grayson must not look anything like him right now.
“You may find Master Bruce at the garden.” Alfred said, eventually, though his eyes were speaking louder than the voice that met Dick.
“Thank you, Alfie.”
It was awkward, and not how Dick imagined it would be. But 7 years was a long time, and to be honest, Dick didn’t plan to ever come back here again. Seeing Alfred brought back memories, good ones with cookies, delicious food, warm hugs and small talks in the kitchen. Alfred had made the Manor home when it felt nothing like it.
Dick wondered why he hadn’t come to visit sooner, but again, he remembered why.
Bruce looked exactly the same as the day Dick left him. Handsome face and cleanly shaven, fancy suit and Italian shoes. He looked like a billionaire from afar. Maybe they should make a movie or TV series about him just like this, sipping Earl Grey at the well set tea table while looking at the blue sky of his enormous garden.
“Dick.” He set his cup down, stood up, and straightened his suit, a small smile made it to his lips that made Dick sick. Bruce never smiled, not since Dick knew him.
“What do you want?” Dick asked and didn’t react when he saw Bruce pull out a chair for him.
Bruce’s smile slipped off his lips, his face hardened like someone had pulled the wrong string of it. Someone that was Dick.
“Can’t I just want to see you?”
“Don’t play around, Bruce. I know you, after all this time, you only call when you want something.” Like the first night after Dick had stormed out of this place, leaving for good and leaving everything behind, Bruce had called, and the phone had rung up all night, and the next morning.
For a big and important man, Bruce lived like a child, hurting and ignoring people and only wanting them back when he lost them.
Bruce stayed silent and just looked straight at him, face cold and emotionless. The same face Dick had learned to love, but also forced himself to hate.
“What do you want, Bruce.” He repeated. “I don’t have all day.”
Lie. He had all day, but he wanted Bruce to think he was a busy man, one that barely had time for his bullshit, not one that despite everything still came running all the way back from Bludhaven after just one short phone call.
Something shifted on the older man’s face, like another layer of cold, hard makeup to shield away his emotions that Dick could hardly ever see. But something had definitely changed in the way he looked at Dick, or the way his fingers lightly tapped a calming rhythm on the glass surface of the table. He took his time, long enough for Dick to start shifting his pose.
“The Red Hood case,” He started, and Dick couldn’t hold back a mocking huff from escaping his throat. Bruce waited for a few seconds before continuing. “He was originally from Gotham, but decided to make a move to Bludhaven. The GCPD don’t have access to any file related to him. Gordon said he has already bought half of the department. It was already hard enough to keep an eye on him when he was in range,”
“And now that he’s in the Blud, things got out of his hands.”
Bruce nodded and handed him a paper envelope. It was surprisingly thin for an A-class criminal case.
“There isn’t much. The Red Hood is good at what he does. He built up a kingdom of his own from the Black Mask scraps. But Bludhaven is new grounds, connections needs to be made, words will be slipped around and that is what I hope we’ll start at.”
“I.” Dick corrected.
“I’m sorry?”
“That is what I’ll start at. This case belongs to the BPD now, and most of the guys there have already started working for the Red Hood. That’s why you contacted me, because you know I’m clean, I’m trustworthy, and I’m on my own.”
“You’re not on your own−”
“Right, Gordon may be able to pick something up for me. But I doubt he’s gonna be much help, this helmet guy has been running around Gotham for almost 2 years and no one can do anything about it.”
“We’re doing our best.”
“We? I see you still go around with him.” Gordon was a good man, a really good man, one that made Dick doubt why he could be around Bruce for this long.
“I owe that man everything. And Gotham is my city too.”
“A city where you pay too much attention to the profit and not enough to the low life streets. If you had, you would have recognized that crime levels have gone down a significant amount since Red Hood took control of the underworld.”
Bruce’s face didn’t move an inch but his shoulders tightened like an invisible weight had been set on them.
“Are you taking his side?”
Dick huffed.
“I’m a police officer, Bruce. And apparently, one of the only clean ones left. I’m not taking anyone’s side aside from justice. I’m just stating facts.”
“He’s a dangerous man.”
“And wouldn’t I know that.”
A dangerous man that 2 weeks ago had kissed Dick out of the blue and drugged him right off. A dangerous man that looked so young, like he might be around Dick’s age. Yet, he carried guns and weapons around like they were just some plastic toys, lead a whole gang of criminals dealing drugs and selling illegal weapons like it was just some poker game.
This world just kept getting weirder and weirder every day.
He turned and was about to leave when Bruce called, voice yearning and maybe desperate too if Dick could let himself be a little paranoid.
“You can stay for lunch.”
And Dick knew this was his attempt at a peace offering, a detente for the cold war that had been set between them for 7 long years. Dick knew today’s meeting was just an excuse so he could agree to see Bruce’s face. Bruce was doing Gordon a favor and all of this would have been simpler if he had given the commissioner his number. But no, Bruce had chosen a face-to-face meeting.
It was soothing, knowing he tried. Still, 7 years was just enough for wounds to heal, not for scars to fade.
“I can. But I won’t.”
And he left, just like that, despite wanting to stay so badly. Because if for once Bruce could feel the torment of this, then the pain would be worth it.
When he came home, the first thing he did after kicking off his shoes was dig through the kitchen cupboard for something dry to eat. The drive wore him out, but seeing Bruce drenched him the most. He shouldn’t have gone there, but again, the envelope that was resting on his countertop now could be worth a year of investigating.
He pulled out the chair and started pouring milk into the bowl for the box of Cocoa Pebbles because it was the fastest thing he could grab that wasn’t spices. He pulled the string and opened the envelope, dumping all the papers down on the island’s wooden surface. Pictures, files and a flash drive fell out, about a third of them were blacked out. Name unknown, age unknown, nationality unknown, no profile picture, height somewhere above average, alias Red Hood, wanted for loan sharking, gambling, drug trafficking, producing illegal weapons, committing arson, bribing legal forces, terrorism, assault with a deadly weapon, etcetera, etcetera. The list just went on and on and by the end of it, he was 110% sure that Red Hood had made it onto the FBI, CIA, NSA, DEA, and Interpol blacklist. It was shown that Red Hood was actually the cause of Gotham’s Kingpin Black Mask’s criminal confession, and the death of 12 other crime bosses. The file also included that a duffle bag full of heads of these crime lords had been sent to the GCPD’s doorstep 2 days before Black Mask’s headquarters had been blown up. The killing of the infamous psychopath Joker seemed more or less a part of Red Hood’s plan too when the ambulance that was carrying him had been bombed in the same month.
The pictures that were included in the envelope were of left-over scenes and few of the Red Hood’s gang tattoo. Dick went into his bedroom with the spoon still in his mouth to take his laptop out and back to the kitchen island, plugging the flash drive in. It didn’t take long for the items to transfer, when he opened the disk, various clips appeared. He skimmed through all of it, most were from police body cameras, the rest where scraps from the news and surveillance tapes that were retrieved as evidence.
Bruce was right, there wasn’t much, and all of this didn’t give any help to him at all. Dick himself might even get a better chance with the blood sample and prints he got from his last encounter with the Red Hood. He had run tests at the state’s lab, nothing came up, he had even given Diana some samples to give it a run in the AFIS database. Still, nothing came up, it was like the man didn’t exist at all.
A thudding sound got Dick to stop his chewing and look behind his back. His eyes skimmed through the place and nothing seemed to be out of place or unusual, but something had his guts twisted, or maybe he was just too tired from driving around today. Maybe it was his neighbor’s cat again, the fluff ball kept inviting himself into his apartment when he felt like it, wandering around his feet till he surrendered and picked it up even in his busiest moments. Looking back at the clock, it was 6:30 already, the sun had gone down and the lights had turned up when he was still busy digging his nose through the files. Time flew when you needed it the most.
Dick got up to stretch his back and suddenly yearned for a shower. He went to turn on the heater, grabbed a hoodie and sweats then went right into the shower room. He thought about Bruce when the water hit him, thought about the way he had looked at him when Dick declined his lunch invitation, thought about the alternative scene where he had said yes and stayed. He remembered Alfred too, the look on his old face when he bid his goodbye and the way he kept staring at him when Dick walked to his Prius on the front yard. He hated that he had broken the butler’s heart, hated that by punishing Bruce, he had also pulled the old man into this torturous game of theirs.
His head ached for relief, for a short break that it hadn’t gotten for what felt like forever. This case was draining him, but again, every case that fell into his hands caused the same affect. Dick couldn’t bring himself to remember the last time Amy walked to his desk and didn’t complain about his health issues. His chest ached every time he blacked out at the desk and woke up with a cooling coffee cup next to his head. Maybe some of the guys in the department felt pity for him, for trying to change the way this world turned, for playing the hero when it was way out of his league.
Maybe he was indeed stupid, for running after a criminal case that even the Feds couldn’t handle.
He toweled his hair and walked back to the living room, head somehow both lighter and more crowded, like it was filled with kapok tucked tight in a fat pillow. Dick didn’t see him then, only after he called out.
“For a cop, your security is crap.” Red Hood was sitting right there at his kitchen counter, hand holding the Cocoa Pebbles box, setting it down as if he had taken a look at it just a few seconds ago.
“Don’t tell me that’s your dinner.”
Dick was still staring at him, heart stopping and mouth gaping. He must have looked like a dead fish, but in his defense, this dead fish was taken by surprise.
“I− it’s my lunch, actually.” He mumbled, still too blown out to actually phrase the sentence properly.
Red Hood huffed and when he stood up, Dick instantly took a step back, hand reaching for the back of his hip out of instinct, just to realize that no, normal people don’t carry gun when they’re fresh out of the shower, even cops. The next steps the guy took, Dick founded himself stumbling back against the wall, too defenseless to actually do something besides thinking of the quickest way to run. The moment there were only a few inches between them, Dick actually thought he was gonna die.
Red Hood still looked as big as he always did, hard muscle coiled up like a bull underneath the heavy armor, pouches stuck out like they might carry grenades in them… wait, maybe they did. Those cold digital eyes of his helmet felt like they could shoot Dick’s soul dead. He towered over him, like a giant bull shark smiling in front of a baby seal, making Dick’s breathing hitch to the point of nothingness.
When his gloved hand went up, Dick squeezed his eyes shut and started counting down the seconds he had left before he said goodbye to the 24 years he had lived in this life. He thought of the way he was going to be killed, either by that military knife the Red Hood tucked in one of his chest pouches, or one of the AKs he carried behind his back, or would he cut off his head like he had done with the crime bosses in Gotham?
No matter the weapon, Dick was 100% sure he was gonna die right here, right now when something solid touched his cheek. It was warmer than he thought for a gun barrel, a bit leathery if his mind still worked properly.
A moment passed and the touch spread to his temple, rubbing soothing circles with what Dick would bet with the dangling life of his was a thumb. A click sound came up, closer than he expected and rang right up to his ears. Dick slowly opened his eyes, and there it was the handsome face he would die before he forgot, up so close they might be inhaling each other’s breaths right now.
“You look good like this, Officer.” He said, voice rumbling so low and close it raised the hair at the back of Dick’s neck.
When he pulled away and walked back to the kitchen island, Dick felt the sudden cold reach his whole body. He hadn’t realized the warmth of Red Hood’s body till he lost it, hadn’t really believed it had actually been Red Hood’s hand touching him gently till he saw it pull away.
“I see you’re doing your homework.” He flipped through the files Dick had laid out and played a few seconds of the video on his laptop. “I’m flattered.”
Red Hood gave a devil-may-care smirk. Dick’s mouth was still lightly gaping and lungs tight with the breaths he took. He couldn’t remember how long he had held his breath before Red Hood had pulled away, but his chest hurt with the deep inhales he took. Aside from that, he was quite shocked that Red Hoof would do all the talking.
No. Talk about shocked, between the infamous A-class international criminal Red Hood showing up at his place, said criminal showing him his bare face, said criminal not killing him in the first instant, and not killing him after he found out Officer Grayson was investigating him, he had no idea which one sounded less mental than the others.
If he survived tonight, Dick thought he might need to give himself a heart check, or get himself on a lifetime supply of Aspirin.
Damn it, he was an officer. The case he had been working on for months was standing there right in his apartment in front of his face. Think, Grayson!
“Why are you here?” Dick came closer and gripped his hand on the corner of the marble countertop.
“Can’t I just want to see your pretty face?”
Ha, it had been the second time he heard that line in the same day. Well, Bruce hadn’t put it like that, but still, same same to him.
“And what makes you think I won’t arrest you right now?” Keep talking, Grayson. He needed to keep Red Hood’s mind occupied, needed to distract him, needed to−
His hand fumbled on the empty holder tucked hidden underneath the marble countertop’s surface. His breath hitched again and when he looked up, Red Hood looked straight at him, spinning Dick’s Glock like a child toy on one hand, grinning like a damn shark.
“Too slow.”
This time, this time Dick thought he was actually gonna die.
He watched the smirk slowly turned into a nonthreatening half smile. Red Hood huffed and closed the open files before he slid off the chair, tucking Dick’s Glock into the back of his waistband like it was his own weapon now.
It was his weapon now.
“I’m not your enemy, Officer. Not tonight.”
“And you expect me to believe that?” Dick glared, watching the only thing he could use to defense himself now fall into a criminal’s hand.
Red Hood didn’t answer to that, his hand went up to motion him to stay quiet. Dick didn’t understand anything when the man turned his head aside like he was trying to pick up a sound in the silent night. Then suddenly, he picked his hood up and put it back on, finger tapping on something that turned the LED of his eyes on. He stayed like that for a couple of minutes, continuing to listen. That was when everything came up to Dick’s mind.
They were being watched.
 “Get into the bedroom.”
Dick almost flinched when he heard the robotic voice, but he nodded and followed the order when Red Hood pulled out one of his massive guns. Dick ran inside and opened the drawers one by one, knocking everything aside till he found the escrima sticks lying inside.
It had been long since he used them, since he last practiced with them. Last time he put on a show with these sticks, he was still airheaded with the dream of being a GCPD police officer, was still running around in the Manor, demanding of Bruce’s attention and Alfred’s cookies.
Now they lay deep in the bottom drawer of his nightstand, slowly dusted through time.
He must have gotten lost for too long because when Red Hood touched his shoulder, he immediately jumped and grabbed his wrist, twisted it the way he knew would hurt. Red Hood was caught by surprise by it, but he didn’t make a sound.
He twisted his wrist back, arm full of strength Dick didn’t even believe was possible. He pulled his hand back, pulling Dick along with it, making him almost stumble into his chest.
“Get on the bed.” He whispered, hand slowly peeling Dick’s grip off him. He must have realized the confused look in Dick’s eyes when he said again. “Just do it.”
At moments like this, Dick could only nod and climb up on his bed. He tugged the blanket up and watched as Red Hood made his move to the window, standing just aside but his eyes were out, a position that all Police Academies taught their students how to spot a sniper without being spotted.
Dick stared at Red Hood’s cargo pants, stared at the guns and knives on his thigh’s straps, and wondered how he managed to do that, carry all those weapons so easily like they meant nothing, like they were parts of his body. Every single day Dick walked out the door with a pistol on his hip, it weighed more than its physical load, bringing him down and pinning every one of his steps with the responsibility and the capability of it.
“How many are there?” He whispered, needing to say something to break the silence between them. He felt tired of not knowing, tired of always being three steps behind what he was chasing.
“One on the rooftop, five downstairs.”
Downstairs?
“My neighbor−”
“Is not your neighbor.”
He cut Dick off, eyes still out the window, gun ready in his hands. Dick took a second to swallow the fact and continued on.
“Did they follow you here?”
Red Hood turned to look at him, the light of his helmet’s eyes in the dark bedroom seemed cold and haunting, like the full moon of a forest’s night sky.
“No.” He startled Dick, he had stayed silent for too long for him to expect the answer to come. “They’re here for you.”
“What?”
Red Hood just looked at him and stayed silent like he was trying to find a way to put it together. Dick didn’t care though, it was literally his life dangling off the cliff now, and he didn’t even know what he had done for it to lead to him into this situation.
Red Hood rubbed a hand in front of his hood, groaned out a frustrated sound that he had no right to make at all.
“What?” Dick repeated, running out of patience.
“Remember 2 weeks ago you saved my life?” He asked like Dick had actually gotten the magical ability to forget events like that. “I pissed off some really bad guys. And they didn’t seem to like the fact that you didn’t let me die.”
“You can’t be serious.”
“Believe me, sugar. I don’t want to be either.”
Red Hood must have seen the way Dick glared at him irately, because he looked away instantly, going back to the view outside the window. The moonlight hit his helmet just right, making the metal shine a beautiful dim red. Dick wondered what people at the station would think if he told them he was in bed when the Red Hood showed up next to his window frame.
He shifted in the bed, tugging the blanket closer to his nose. Red Hood cocked his head to give him a look, face masked making Dick feel both uncomfortable and irritated at not being able to see his expression.
“Those guys have been following you since the day I left this place.” He was still looking out, and at this point, Dick thought it wasn’t for whatever was out there anymore, but to avoid his eyes.
“They tail you to the station, even got one as your neighbor. Learning your living habits, when you go in when you go out, are you single and living alone or have someone visiting frequently. Damn fuckers probably know what you dream about when you sleep. It only took this long for them to plan on killing you because you’re a cop.”
Red Hood said it like it was nothing, dirty booted foot resting nonchalantly on Dick’s ottoman as he bent down to pick out something on the opposite building. Dick tried to calm his breathing when he looked at the man, his stomach felt all wrong when the cargo pattern played tricks with his eyes, making him imagine the details of some kind of venomous snake.
It took him longer than he had comfortably expected to find it odd in the way Red Hood had said it.
“How do you know all of this?”
Dick could see it, could feel that something had definitely changed in the air when Red Hood’s shoulders tensed at the sentence. It took long enough for him to panic, for him to repeat the “stupid, stupid, STUPID” inside his head. He should have held his tongue.
Dick clutched tight to the escrima sticks, feeling the burn when his heart started to pound like a druggie high on nicotine dips. He should have known sooner, his instincts should have picked up the signs, should have seen that this was all just a play, and the real enemy was right here in his room, holding machine guns and dynamite right on his watch.
“Listen−”
Red Hood cut off, just as unexpectedly as he had started, and snapped his head toward the window, holding a gun that looked like a crossbreed of a pistol and a military shotgun, and fired.
He fired.
He fired and the loud bang Dick had expected to hear didn’t even come, muted by the muffler stuck on the top of the barrel.
Dick took a few good seconds to lay there in the bed dumbfoundedly, brain stopped and heart seized. His mind was still scrambled when he found the courage to slowly sit up, eyes open wide staring at the man.
“Did you jus−”
“I did.”
Dick’s breath hitched.
“Is he…”
“He is.”
Red Hood said as he took off his helmet, shook his hair free and looked straight at him with piercing blue eyes. Dick felt himself caught in his gaze like a fish in the net.
“I said it already, didn’t I? I’m not your enemy.”
“You didn’t answer my question.” Dick glared, still not very sure how to react correctly.
“What if it’s too embarrassing that I don’t want you to know?”
“What’s too embarrassing?”
“You…” Red Hood snapped halfheartedly and got tongue-tied, Dick didn’t know if the red face belonged to his anger or embarrassment, probably both. He heard him mumble something like ‘Dickface’.
“I watched you, okay?” Red Hood spat out, finally. “I watched you wake up and go off every day, I watched you play dumb head hero out on the streets, watched your shit living schedule and your shit eating habits. I don’t even want to know how you sleep 4 hours a day and still are able act like a 5 years old on a sugar high.”
For a while, Dick just stared at him, watching the faint redness spread to Red Hood’s ears like a drunken man.
“And that happened before or after you found out I was targeted?”
Red Hood avoided his eyes and stayed silent.
“Red?”
“Before, okay?!” Red Hood snapped again. “Jesus, keep bitching about it and I’ll let you die tonight.”
They both knew he wouldn’t do that.
“What about the others?”
“They’re coming. Stay in here.” He strapped the big gun back on his back, and pulled out two pistols, checked the bullets, and clicked off the safety.
“What? No, I’m coming with you.”
Red Hood turned and looked at Dick like he had spoken in another language.
“Are you stupid or something? Those men are mercenaries, and they have firearms.”
“And I’m a cop.”
“I don’t see why that reason alone is fucking enough to you.” Red Hood looked like he was just two seconds away from knocking Dick’s head out.
He inhaled and swore and turned back to look at Dick all over again before reaching for the knife on his thigh strap.
“Take this. And stay behind me!” He gave the knife to Dick and ordered, eyes serious.
“I don’t need it.” Dick frowned.
“Of fucking course you need it. Did those law courses suck all the living will out of you?”
“I don’t want it.” He pushed the knife back to Red Hood’s hand and held the escrima sticks up. “I have these.”
“What…” Red Hood took one solid second to look at them before shaking his head. “No, nope, no. You’re not fighting with that shit. Either you take the knife or a fucking gun, or stay here and wait till I get back. Do you hear me?”
“No, I have to go. I can’t let you kill all those men.”
“What!!?”
The sound of the front door slamming open startled both of them. Red Hood grunted angrily before pushing Dick down on the bed and pointing an accusing finger towards his face.
“You stay here.” He commanded and put his hood back on.
Before Dick could protest, he kicked the bedroom door open and closed it again. The next second was chaos, a blended mixture of colorful curses, painful screams, furniture smashing and gunshots fired. He heard the sound of bodies hitting the floor, of people choking on their own blood, and felt nauseous. Dick didn’t know where Red Hood had found the thought that locking him here inside his own bedroom while he went out there going on his killing spree with people that were here to kill Dick, would be such a thoughtful idea. He was, by all mean, scared, but no delicate flower was he. While the files Bruce had given him today didn’t do much help his investigation, those people out there might help.
Red Hood said something about pissing them off, or pissing their boss off, maybe he was trying to do business with them. Maybe other forces on the streets were working together to put off the big bad wolf with the red helmet. Maybe a gang war was happening right now under the BPD’s neglecting eyes.
Either way, Dick couldn’t ignore it. Those people out there, whether they were here to kill Dick or not, they weren’t just dummy bags for Red Hood to play shoot and run with anymore.
The moment he kicked the door open, Red Hood was in the middle of choking some guy to the point that his tongue poked out. His kitchen was a mess, the bowl of cereal had been smashed to pieces, left-over milk running down his wooden floor and wetting an unconscious guy’s head with it. Glass was shattered everywhere, and one of his chairs was now hanging on another unconscious guy’s neck, broken with splinters poking out everywhere. Luckily for Dick, his only neighbor now turned out to be not his neighbor anymore.
The whole room turned to look at him for one solid second. Dick didn’t know what had hit him to think that that Red Hood was making a facial expression.
Dick wished that second was a bit longer, just a bit longer so he wouldn’t have to regret running out at gun point with nothing but stupid sticks in his hands. A gun pointed at his head and in a mere tick so many more. Red Hood shouted something that didn’t quite reach his ears but Dick was already moving, sliding on the floor and back behind his sofa like a piece of soap on the bathroom floor.
It didn’t take long for someone to walk over to his place. This one didn’t carry a gun, and Dick kicked his ankles on instinct, jamming his head with the butt of his escrima. He got up and got a mere second to look at the situation. He charged up the escrima sticks, waited for them to shoot out some electricity and got up, yelling.
“Red, duck!”
The escrima came flying and hit the one on Red Hood’s back as he dodged it in time, electrocuting him and sending him down to the floor, shaking like a dying fish.
There was only one guy left, and to Dick’s surprise, it was his neighbor.
“Mark…”
“Sorry, sweetheart. Nothing personal.” He raised his gun and pointed at Dick.
“Don’t do this, Mark.” Dick didn’t know if he sounded right or not, but his lips started shaking as the barrel staring point blank towards him.
“You have no idea who you pis−”
Mark didn’t get to finish his words as a hole marched on his forehead. Blood splattered on Dick’s chest before Mark’s body went down with a loud thump, revealing Red Hood behind him, holding Dick’s Glock with the barrel still smoking.
Dick’s knees started trembling as he looked down at Mark’s body, at the blood pooling around his head.
“Why did you kill him?” His voice came out, could barely win a breath, shaking and breathless like he had been choked by invisible hands.
“Because he tried to kill you.”
When Dick looked at him, it wasn’t digital eyes that stared back at him anymore. Dick felt like he could sink into the blue of those eyes, so cold yet so tender. A gentle hand came up to touch his cheek, rubbing lightly.
He smiled, so charming and warm Dick didn’t know what to do. “You’re okay now.”
He took off his gloves and this time, this time his warm skin touched Dick’s, sending electricity down to the very core of his whole body. This was the first time they had been this close that Dick didn’t feel like dying. Sharp eyes and crooked brows, straight nose, perfect cheekbones, lightly tanned skin but fading, neat undercut hair that was short enough to never get out of place even with the helmet. In another scene, Dick might have mistaken him with a soldier, a very handsome one.
Something about him, so tall and big and looking down at Dick had his heart beating in a whole new way.
“Do you wanna call the police?” He asked, so suddenly it startled Dick a bit.
“I’m the police.”
Red Hood huffed.
“Call your friends then.” He smiled again and ruffled Dick’s hair before walking into his bedroom, leaving him behind standing dumbfounded and not knowing what to think or do about that.
Dick had just gotten back from patrol when Amy was waiting for him by the door and motioned him to come to her desk. She gave him the look like she was ready to gut him and eat his organs. The paper coffee cup in her hands was pushed forward, abandoned.
“Are you going to talk about it?”
He knew what she was asking about, knew she was one of the only honest cops left, one he could totally trust. He looked around to check if anyone was eavesdropping on them, and turned back to look at her.
“Does it matter now?”
“This is no time for one of your stupid jokes, Grayson. You’re testing my patience.” She glared at him as her hands entwined and pushed beneath her chin. “You didn’t write the report, did you? It’s not even your pretty curvy handwriting, Wayne didn’t pay good money for you to paint chicken scratch like that. Is it Clay? Or Teller? Did the guys even give you the papers or did they just fill them in on their own?!”
She dumped the report down in front of his face, lips pulled into a thin line.
“I know how this department works, I know you know it too. And I know things must not have been easy for you since moving here, compared to the life you had in Gotham. You’re a good kid, I’ll give you that, but life in here isn’t a Hollywood movie, there are boundaries that we must not cross, not because we can’t, but because we shouldn’t. Do you understand?”
Dick stayed silent, watching her cup of coffee instead of looking into her eyes. Amy slumped back into her chair, she must be feeling frustrated dealing with him.
“It’s organized crime,” She said, finally. A sigh escaped her lips as her fingers lightly tapped on the wooden surface of her table. “Like in the old days, back in the 80’s and early 2000’s, when everybody knew each other, would be eating with the Mafia−same guys who remember your grandmother at Christmas and buy you ice cream. Truth be told? They kept the streets clean of scumbags. Burglars, rapists, pedophiles? Their bodies would end up ground and rotting on Highway 61.”
Her coffee cup lightly trembled under the rhythm of her fingers.
“Organized crime was a good thing, the best Bludhaven could hope for right now.” She continued. “At least they had a code, didn’t believe in beating up old ladies, carjackings, home invasions, molesting kids, shooting you in the head for your wallet. Or for no reason at all.”
She looked at Dick, and her eyes made Dick wonder that growing up under her motherhood must be real difficult.
“Last night five bodies were found in your apartment, three already died, one in a coma with only 10% chance of ever waking up, and this morning the Feds came and took the other away, all with 10 years in jail or criminal records. And what was on your report again?” She picked up the document in a halfhearted attempt and spoke in a mocking tone. “Self-defense violence?! I know you’re impressive with your… talents.” She decided. “I checked your profile myself when you first came here, people at the Academy really liked you, you finished your training in what? 19 weeks? Fastest time ever recorded since 2004. Had a bright spot to West Point Prep, but no, you chose this shithole instead.”
She stopped, waited for Dick to say something, but then gave up.
“I know you didn’t do all of this. Too violent for even a normal cop, not to mention you. The Grayson I’ve worked with in the last 13 months wouldn’t go for headshots or stab someone in the back with a kitchen knife 14 times just in defense.”
“I…”
“Oh, he can talk. I’m not done yet, Grayson.”
“Sorry.”
Amy stopped her tapping and forced Dick to look at her without even trying. She had her ways, a strong fine woman like her always had her ways. She took a minute to look away, made it look like she was too tired to see his tired face, eyes glancing around to see if anyone was around close enough to pick up what they were saying.
“Grayson,” She said.
“Yes?”
“Are you in trouble?”
He thought of Red Hood, of the way he had made his way inside his apartment like it was his home, thought of the way he had constantly taken off his hood to show Dick his face whenever he could, had smiled at him so wickedly, his hand had touched Dick so gently. He thought of how much Red Hood had surprised him when his face heated up and his ears had turned red when he was embarrassed.
He wondered whether all of that was trouble or not.
“I know with the investigation you are doing, the Red Hood case that seems to keep sucking you in, it’s dangerous.” Amy warned him, her eyes suddenly didn’t seem so scary anymore. “Organized crime is a good thing, but still, Red Hood is Mafia, and Mafia are criminal, don’t push them to their limits.”
If he told her he was almost murdered last night thanks to Red Hood, but was also saved last night thanks to Red Hood again, would she believe him?
Probably.
“I’m fine, Amy.” He smiled, hoping she would stop staring at the bags under his eyes. “I know when I should run or not.”
She was about to say something else, but decided against it. She nodded and waited till Dick was half way out of the door to call after him.
“Hey Grayson,”
“Yeah?”
“If you die, I don’t want Wayne knocking on my door asking questions, understood?”
That was her way of saying she didn’t want him dead.
“Understood.”
It was late dawn when Dick slumped back into his apartment, too exhausted to even take off his shoes without leaning on the wall. His phone slipped out of his pocket and dropped down on the floor, Dick didn’t even care to pick it up and turned back to lock his door, he had already decided that today was more than enough. He was too tired to eat, to answer the door if someone came and asked for something.
He was ready to stay dead to the world for a good 5 hours before his shift came up. Tomorrow he needed to make a call to Gordon, or at least send him a thank you note for trying to help. He needed to get a new pistol too, now that his belonged to Red Hood.
It took him longer than necessary to pick up the phone, but in the end, he was too tired to even move a few muscles. He was more than ready to land face first on the couch when he saw him, sitting on the countertop.
“Jesus Christ!” He jumped, hand on his chest when Red Hood gave him a wicked grin.
“Told ya your security is shit.” He said, no helmet today, no armor either. Taking a complete look at him, Dick realized Red Hood was here in civilian clothes. Prada leather jacket, Levi’s jeans, premium denim, $80? Could be more. Dr. Martin boots, black, high neck, thick lugged sole, size 11, authentic no doubt, that one should be around $150.
Good thing about growing up with Bruce was that you had to have a good eye, good thing about growing up with Alfred was that you had to have good taste in everything.
He wore gloves, thick, brown, leather ones that were meant for bikers and not for showoffs. Dick had spotted a red Ducati Monster parked down on the sideway in front of his apartment building, had been curious about it since not a lot of people in town were bikers, and especially, not a lot of people in town could afford to spend that much money on a bike.
There were two plastic bags behind him, and suddenly Dick remembered the crime bosses’ heads that this man had cut off then stuffed into a duffle bag to send to the police.
Red Hood must have noticed he was staring at them too, he grinned and jumped off the island, unfolding the bags and showing Dick his back so unconcernedly.
“I brought Thai, also got half of a Guangdong roast duck in this bag, had to make a detour for it but damn, the thing smells good.” He pointed at the other bag. “You haven’t eaten anything today, just like usual. Couldn’t cook since I didn’t wanna scare you off that fast.”
He went around and opened the cabinets and started taking out dishes with two bowls.
“But, I also don’t want it to look like takeouts, what kind of gentleman would that make me if I do?” He slowly dumped all the food in the containers out on the dishes and placed the duck pieces carefully into a circle. When all done, he gave his finger a lick and whistled low.
“Et voila!”
He washed his hands and motioned Dick to come and sit. Dick, who was looking at him with all the blood drained out of his face, and was 2 steps away from running back to the station.
It only took him two seconds to grab the nearest object and fling it towards Red Hood. The guy caught it, as expected, Dick slammed into him, knocking him down to the floor with his body and fumbled behind his back for the handcuffs.
“Woah, easy tiger. Not right on the first date.” He still had guts to joke around, lips pulling into a wide grin and showing white teeth while Dick pressed on his back and pulled his wrists together.
It was annoying to admit this wasn’t the first time a criminal tried to flirt with him.
“Red Hood, you’re under arrest for drug trafficking, producing illegal weapons, committing arson, bribing legal forces, terrorism, assault with deadly weapons, mass murder, kidnapping and operating illegal gang activities. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.” Dick read his rights and snapped the handcuffs closed.
“Ah, so you do remember your homework.”
“Let’s hope all that dirty money you make can afford you the best lawyer in town.”
“Ooh it sure can. But is that really how you’re gonna say thanks to your knight in shiny armor last night?” He smirked.
“Remain silent, please. You’re not as charming as you thi−Wah!”
Red Hood turned on his full force, knocking Dick on his back down to the floor. In a swift he was up and on Dick, handcuffs off his wrists now twirling on his index finger as he gave him a wolfish smirk.
“You haven’t seen me trying.” He leaned down and blew the words into Dick’s ear, raising baby hairs at the back of his neck.
Red Hood stood up after that, and Dick fumbled to get up, didn’t dare to let this man out of his sight for once. Red Hood seemed to take Dick’s anger and glaring as threatening as the frustration of a stray kitten. He walked behind the island and pulled up a black backpack, opened it, and took out two bottles of wine.
Dick didn’t even want to question why he carried wine in his backpack, but the idea kept flying around his head like an annoying bee.
“Which one is better with shrimp?” He asked.
Dick took a better look at the bottles, stayed silent for a minute, then asked.
“What kind of shrimp?”
Red Hood checked the dish in front of him. “Fried, spicy with a bit of sauce, got a hint of lime in them.”
“The 2000 Ladoucette Sancerre Blanc.”
“What about the other?”
“The La Stella Moscato D’asti? Good with smoked salmon, grilled pancetta shrimp, and garlic bread.” Before Dick could stop, Alfred’s lessons poured back out like an opened champagne.
Red Hood smiled at him, soft and sweet like Dick was his summer lover. He turned and dug around his cabinets again for two glasses, setting them down on the table.
“Let’s eat.”
Only then did he turn on the light in the kitchen, not the new bulb Dick had installed by himself when he first moved in, but the old one that came along with this place, dangling right on top of the dining table. The thing had looked so old and lonely Dick had to put a little DIY into it, had had to wrap old electric cord around a balloon, spray painted and coated it with walnut stain. It flickered a bit before shining decently, giving out an unhealthy orangey light that made the shrimp and the curry on the table look redder than usual.
Red Hood pulled a chair out for him, waiting.
“If you put anything in the food…” Dick voiced out when he was pushed down in the chair, eyeing the table suspiciously.
“Don’t be ridiculous, you’ve tested this guy’s patience quite a lot tonight.” He poured the wine out in both glass and sat down. “Alright, let’s dig in.”
Dick watched Red Hood sipping his wine and eating a few pieces of duck, he would nudge his fork on his hand once in a while to encourage him to eat the food. The duck was good, crispy on the skin and the meat was quite tender and sweet, the curry was a little too spicy for him, but he was glad the shrimp were seasoned lighter, and it really went well with the wine.
Red Hood watched him all the time and kept smiling. It made Dick feel unsure about how he should react to that.
“So, why Bludhaven?” He asked suddenly, while pouring more wine into Dick’s glass.
“The Blud is small with little people, and it has nothing to do with him.”
Red Hood took in a big bite of chicken with cashew nuts, and Dick appreciated that he didn’t ask any further questions about “him”.
“So, why Bludhaven?” Dick asked, repeating the question.
“Small place, too many little fears.” He answered nonchalantly. “Best way to stop it is to become the most feared.”
“You want to stop the chaos in the Blud? Like the way you do in Gotham?!”
Red Hood looked at him and sipped his wine, eyeing him carefully before setting the glass down, tapping it lightly.
“Chaos and vice are… unavoidable.” He said. “They are like rats and cockroaches on the streets, no matter how hard you keep it clean they will still exist, lurking in the dark and waiting for an opportunity to breed and grow.”
He got up and took both his and Dick’s plates away, dumping them into the dishwasher and went back to his chair. He licked his slightly chapped lips, eyes on the wall for a few seconds before they were back on Dick.
“You can’t kill crime, it’s part of our nature, part of the society. That’s why I control it, all the rats and cockroaches on the streets live by my rules, listen to my words, and follow my orders, then they get to eat, and they get to live. I protect the streets, by controlling the devils on them.”
“That’s a twisted way to do it.”
“Twisted, indeed, but efficient.”
Amy had told him about this, about organized crime and the way it helped the people living with it. So far Red Hood had gone way against everything Dick had spent strength and time on learning about him, and Dick didn’t know what to do about that. Didn’t know if saying he agreed would make him a traitor to everything he had worked for, didn’t know if he should even let this man keep getting this close.
It was like a Rubik’s cube, the more he tried to shape it back in order, the more it went wrong.
“Why…”
“Hum?”
“Why are you here, tonight?” Dick asked, not quite looking at him. “Why did you buy me dinner, why are you telling me all of this?”
He had to know, he just had to know. Red Hood could have killed him at anytime if he wanted, could have let him die yesterday, but he hadn’t. He out of all people should know Dick could never be swayed easily either, not by good food or even attractive smiles.
Red Hood glanced at him, testing. Testing whether he should give away the honest answer, Dick could see it, could read it in the way his eyes flickered on his face like an open book. He had always been good at reading people, and now the helmet was out of his way, he felt better at it than ever.
“Officer Grayson,”
His voice sounded strange this time, lower than normal, raspy like the words had to fight their way to the surface.
“Yes…” Dick gasped when Red Hood got up off his chair and into his personal space, face closer and closer by the second.
“I think I’m in trouble.” He whispered and it raised all the goosebumps on Dick’s skin.
Dick smelled him, like mint and gunpowder, cigarette tar and newly baked bread, homely and so mundane, he felt their sleeves brushing each other, felt his presence, pulling him in like gravity.
“Why?” His question was barely whispered, but it caught his ears and his fingers were up to gently catch Dick’s chin.
“I’m not drugged now.”
In the first few seconds, or maybe even minutes, Dick didn’t seem to mind the meaning of it, was too occupied by Red Hood’s mouth on his. To his surprise, his kiss wasn’t as rough as his appearance might seem, his lips mumbled on Dick’s, asking for permission that kept throwing him off.
Dick did flinch when his hand snaked up to catch the back of his neck, but he cooed him back to the safety zone by feathering kisses on the corner of his lips. He only moved further when Dick had settled back, his tongue got in and flickered playfully at his teeth. Dick grabbed onto his jacket out of instinct, needing something to hold on to when it felt like the world was spinning too fast.
It was slow and gentle, yet the ground beneath his feet became unsteady. If he didn’t hold tight to Red Hood, Dick was afraid he was gonna fall off his chair.
When Red Hood’s lips left his, and their foreheads met each other, he looked into Dick’s eyes in the way Dick never thought a man like him could. After tonight, Dick didn’t even know what kind of man he was anymore.
They breathed and just stayed silent to catch the air their lungs needed, the room was turning warmer as Red Hood’s hands were still on him. Dick remembered it then, about what the man had said, about him not being drugged anymore. Last time they had kissed, so quick and sudden, Red Hood had been high on pain medication, had had that rush of leftover adrenaline from the fight he had had before, had needed a distraction to drug Dick to sleep, to find an escape route because it was clear he wouldn’t let a wanted criminal get away just like that, or so Dick assumed.
He was fully conscious this time, no drugs in the system nor reason to run away. And he smiled at Dick, just like so many times he had tonight, so warmly and fondly it had his chest aching and melting.
Only when Red Hood moved to kiss his cheek, Dick realized that maybe he was in trouble too.

Lines borrowed from season one episode twelve, “Faith” in Bold.
Sam and I crept behind Roy LaGrange’s house and the chill had already settled around me. Sam grasped my hand, “it's okay. If you can't go in or need to get out, just say the word.”
I took a deep breath centering myself then nodded. “Let’s go.”
We kept against the walls until Sam saw Roy being escorted away. He opened a window and climbed inside.
“You know it's pretty impressive that you can still do that so easily, gentle giant.” I climbed in after him chuckling at his look of disgust. “What I’m helping…” I choked on the words as noise bombarded me from all sides. I pressed my hands to my temples and squeezed my eyes shut. The walls were saturated in strong emotions that choked the air, there was no way this was a comfortable room for anyone.
“Place is a little dark for a faith healer.”
“He listens to people in here… but the resentment and disgust. Let's get out of this room, I’m still too raw, I can only dampen it so much...”
Sam grabbed my hand and pulled me along, “keep your eyes closed, I've got you.” His calm washed over me like a cool breeze as he led me from the room and down a hall.
Sam’s belief in me had always been invigorating but it was the depth of his care that soothed even my worse fears. It was a type of love that kept me balanced since I was five.
After the last few days, I was still recouping from the strength of the emotions through the bond and the toll of Dean’s injury but Sam was confident and calm, exactly what I needed.
The further we got from that front room, the quieter it became and then I noticed the stench, the hint of blood in the air exactly like in the tent.
“Locked door.” He released my hand and I opened my eyes. He picked the lock and stepped inside.
“Wow.” I walked over and touched the desk. I could feel the movement between the desk and the bookcase, the rabid energy to seek something and the exhilaration once it was found. There were three, no, four very distinct energies there but the most dominant and recent held a distortion that vibrated off the wood, guilt twisted into a drive that was… corrupted.
“Hey, look at this.”
I pulled away from the desk dusting my hands and leaving the impressions behind. Sam showed me a small book with newspaper clippings. He handed me the top one, “look familiar?”
I held the piece of newsprint in my hands and the distortion vibrated along my arms. Envious blasphemer. “Jesus.”
“What is it?”
“She.” I handed it back to him and he placed it in the book and snapped it shut. “A woman clipped those. Sue Ann. It's gotta be.”
“We need to tell Dean.”
“Wait. Where's the control? Look in there for a spell. We need to know how she’s controlling it.”
Sam watched me and I nodded. He opened the book and rifled through pages. I closed my eyes and tried to focus on that stench of blood. I knelt down and touched the floor. A flash of the rawhead and Sam falling down stairs. “A basement. Was there a door?” I looked up at Sam, his brow together in concentration, he glanced toward the door before meeting my gaze.
“I didn't see one but I wasn't really looking. Pamela was right, there’s a binding spell in here for a reaper. And a crude sketch of what looks like an altar.”
“Like the table on the stage?” I stood up and he turned the book to show me.
“Definitely not, this is… way darker.”
“It’s got to be under the house. Nothing like that would go unnoticed up here.”
He nodded, closed the book, and slipped it into his pocket. “Come on.”
I followed him out blocking everything so that front room, or another like it, wouldn't bombard me again. We quickly swept the first floor. “Damnit, of course, it's outside.”
Sam hustled toward the window we came in and I grabbed his arm, stop. What is that?”
“Help me please!”
Sam’s wide eyes met mine, “the protester.”
He jumped through the window and I followed suit, closing the window behind me. “What are we going to do?! We don't have anything to stop a reaper!”
We made it down the back steps when the commotion erupted. We ran along the line of cars as people poured out of the tent. “Dean must've stopped it.”
I spotted the man on his knees just as Sam’s phone rang. “There!”
We rushed over and Sam answered the phone barking into it, “it didn't stop!”
“Sue Ann! Tell him it's Sue Ann!”
We stood behind the man and the reaper’s presence licked at my skin but there was nothing we could do. The man’s fear soaked the area and I turned toward the tent hoping Dean could stop her in time. I shut my eyes fighting against the torment, anger, and frustration that joined the fear like a cacophony of sound in my head. My blocks weren't helping, they were barely filtering anything from the reaper.
I fell to my knees, covering my ears knowing it wouldn't do a thing but impossible to stop the reflex. “Sam!”
His hands were on my face and within seconds, the tumultuous wave began to recede. His warmth surrounded me, the soft blue, calm waters washed away the mess at my feet.
“That's it, short stack. The calmest, most perfect ocean waves, lapping at your feet. A beautiful day at the beach with your family. Bring her down, bring her back.”  Pama’s hypnotic voice on the breeze.
“You're doing great, Sam.” Daddy.
“Shhh. I’ve got you. Dean stopped it. Just breathe, I've got you.”
I squinted at first, half expecting the surf and sun behind little Sammy flanked by my daddy and Pama, but the dull, cloudy day was still there. I blinked away the memory.
The man was gone and only a fading imprint of his brush with death hung around. Sam helped me to my feet, “can you walk?”
I nodded although I wasn't exactly sure. I hadn't been hit that hard since I was a kid. I took a shaky step and Sam’s arm was around my back as a safeguard. We made it to the car and Sam pulled a bottle of orange juice from the front seat. “Here.”
I sipped the juice and then a gathering warmth in my chest expanded out. I glanced up and Dean was striding toward us.
“What happened?”
“It's nothing. I'm fine.” I gave him a smile but when he reached me, he crushed me against him. I closed my eyes and soaked him up.
“She got overloaded like… way back.” Sam whispered and I nestled further into Dean trying to offset the concern already whispering around me.
The lord will deal with him as he sees fit. Sue Ann’s snide remark rang in my head. “Dean.” I looked up at him and he shook his head.
“Not now.” Dean tossed the keys to Sam and guided me into the passenger seat then pushing me across the seat. I couldn't take my eyes off him. “These cops aren't going to leave anytime soon if she even lets them leave at all. Let's get something to eat and take down this bitch after.”
Sam started the car and my stomach dropped, “she’s coming after you. You’ve got to see that.”
Dean smirked, “she’s not the first. Probably won't be the last.”
I rolled my eyes and tried to bite back his amusement stirring my own. “Morbid.”
Sam barked out a laugh, “you're the one smiling.”
Dean slipped his arm around my shoulders and tugged me against him. “I'm staying with you when we go back tonight.”
“I knew that already.” He leaned down and kissed me, “you two gonna tell me what you found or maybe what you think hit you so hard?”
“Oh, I don't know. I've never been right in front of a pissed off reaper pulling out a soul?”
“Pissed off?”
“You have no idea.”
Sam shook his head as he maneuvered the car around the loitering crowd. “The lore did mention it was like putting a leash on a great white shark. I mean I'd be pissed if someone was using me against my will… but for a preacher’s wife to cross a line like that. She's using black magic to murder people.”
Dean rubbed my arm, “she was desperate. She stumbled upon a way to save her husband and she used it.”
Dean’s theory melded with my own thought from earlier and I squeezed his thigh. “But that knowledge became twisted. I don't know why or how, I mean I have a few guesses but what I know is she got angry, really angry. I could feel it in that study. How twisted she became, how rabid she was to find those who deserved to be punished. It really makes me wonder how Roy began healing, did she tell him he could or did he realize it himself?”
“He told me he discovered it later, that God had blessed him.”
“Is it possible that God did step in and decide to do some good with it?” It tumbled from my mouth and I knew Dean would scoff at it.
“If he was going to step in why not just stop the person who was killing people while parading around that it was His will?”
I glanced at Sam and caught his eye. He gave me that sympathetic smile. Dean never shared our ‘whimsical’ theories that parts of the Bible were based on real lore but this was different. This had nothing to do with God but the person acting like one and the guilt Dean would carry because of them but at least he was alive to carry anything. It was selfish but I didn't care. I couldn't decide if that was better or worse.
“I'm starving. Let’s get some food and we can tell you what we found and make a plan.” Sam glanced at the cop car stationed at the end of the dirt road that led to the tent of healing. “She won’t let the cops leave.”
~~
Dean parked the impala near the tent and I looked around. “Looks like it’s more than just Layla and her mother. That's good for us. They won't be in the house.”
A flicker of guilt that Dean tried to hide. “I don't know. Looks like a lot of these people have been camping out for a while.”
I touched Dean’s hand, “we can't save everyone, especially the natural stuff.”  Sam and I had gone against that but we didn't know the cost.
He met my gaze with a sad smile. “Come on, let’s check the tent. Make sure they’re in there.” Dean got out and Sam and I glanced at each other then followed him.
The cold that tickled along my spine was more than just the night chill and put me even more on edge. We peeked inside the opening and I whispered with a glance at Dean, “join the prayer group, CarolAnn.” Dean’s silent chuckle warmed me until I spotted what was missing. “Where are the cops?”
Dean threw a glance my way, “where’s Sue Ann?”
Sam turned toward the house, “wanna bet we’ll find both at the house? She’s probably protecting the altar, maybe told the cops we were in the house earlier.”
“Well, to be fair, we were.” I watched the flickering shadows around the house that only emphasized the dark. Sam turned his bitch face my way and I grinned.
Dean chuckled as he strode toward the house. “Come on, you two. We’re professionals.”
I winked at Sam and we both caught up with Dean. My stomach twisted. Not just the power it creates but the toll it takes. I shook my head and took a deep breath then Sam bumped into me almost knocking me off my feet.
“Find the altar, I’ll catch up.” Dean jogged to the front of the house and when I tried to follow Sam grabbed my arm then pulled me into the bushes as Dean called out the cops.
I tried to pull from Sam’s grip. “Sam, I can’t, I have to stay with him.”
He gazed down into my eyes, “but what are you going to do? We break the altar, we stop her.”
I tried to look around him as the need to find Dean vibrated through my very bones. “I don’t know but I...” I met his gaze and begged him to understand, “I have to stay with him.”
His internal struggle continued for a second then faded, “okay. Go.”
I jumped out of the bush and followed the pull into the pseudo parking lot created by the vehicles between the house and the tent. The cops’ sweeping lights were on the far side of the lot and I thought about moving them to me but I didn't know where Dean was.
I hid behind the truck in front of me, closed my eyes, and focused on Dean. The warmth swelled in my chest and I followed it. It pulled me forward and I focused on the sensation that was almost like a string leading me to him. I opened my eyes and moved around the truck following the invisible path.
I came to a camper with Cujo barking from the front seat then Dean climbed down the side. I rushed over and pinned him against the vehicle. He smiled and that lightning zipped through my veins. “I told you you’re not leaving me behind tonight.”
“Just testing a theory.” Damn that sexy as hell smirk.
His arms wrapped around me and his mouth sought forgiveness and soothed the frantic need bouncing around. The energies passing back and forth swirling around in my chest; his need, his calm, his joy crashed and blended with my worry and other muddled emotions. It was different than my connection with Pamela but maybe it really was this bond. Then Pamela’s grin flashed in my mind after she asked about echoes.
Dean broke the kiss and dropped his arms but his hand found mine. “Come on, we should keep moving.”
“Of course.” The movement in my head was nothing like he was talking about.
He grinned, “hey, stow that. I’m not that strong.”
I chuckled and pictured him pressing me against the camper, the heat shot through me at the thought stirring an ache.
He closed his eyes, his jaw clenching, “fuck me.” My mouth dropped open then in seconds he had me pinned against the camper with his body and his lips hovered just in front of mine. I reached for him and he pulled back, “how did you ever think this was normal?”
It was a joke he teased me with after our first time; an innocent question I had asked that somehow became an inside joke I’d never live down.
I looked into his intense, laughing eyes, “I didn’t know any better.” He leaned in, coming close but still not giving me what I wanted.
“We really need to move. I will only do it if you swear no more cheating.” That smirk only caused the ache to grow.
“I swear.”
He pressed his lips to mine with all the desire that swirled between us. He pulled away, grabbed my hand again, and tugged me away from the camper. “We’re getting a separate room tonight.”
“Whatever you say.”  We weaved through the cars and then I yanked him to the side toward the edge of the field.
The chill skittered down my spine right before the light in front of us fell dark. Dean squeezed my hand and we slowed down then stopped when the line of lights in front of us shut down in quick succession. We glanced at each other before Dean looked behind us but I could feel it just beyond the light pole in front of us. “Dean.” I don’t even know if I said it out loud but Dean turned and the tension hit me like a truck.
He tried to pull his hand from mine but I tightened my grip. He stared forward at the approaching reaper and forced out through clenched teeth, “go. Run.”
“I’m not going anywhere. It won’t matter.” I turned in front of him pressing my chest against his and grabbed the back of his neck pulling his head toward me. “Just look at me. Sammy will stop it.” But the fear still bounced back and forth. The tears in his eyes only echoed his apologies flowing in my head. That was new. I never heard his words like that before.
My back stung then the pale hand was against Dean’s head reminding me of Roy. The pain was immediate, a powerful draining sensation that didn’t just take the breath away but smashed the lungs altogether.
Dean choked, fighting back as much as he could but there was no protection for this kind of onslaught. Without thinking, I grabbed his face and screamed, Dean! I sucked in a painful breath with the surge of energy that shot through me then pulled his face to mine ignoring the freezing cold that clung to his right side and burned my hand. His eyes flitted across my face and they began to drain of color as a sharp pain jabbed my chest.
“Dean!” The anguished cry pierced the night air and echoed in my head. I could feel my body shutting down like before but so much faster, the pain screaming from too many parts of my body. Then Pamela’s voice was rushing over itself, his soul connected to yours not just sharing the burden. The power it creates. but your body was aching because his soul was losing power. The power it creates.
I slammed my lips against his and chanted in my head, Animo, animum, corpus, animam meam. Cresceret vinculum duorum ad unum.
There was another buildup of energy in my chest until it burst outward and the cold vacuum vanished. I broke away searching Dean’s face terrified to find him gone. His green eyes were clear staring back into mine, his brows furrowed, but then he glanced over my head as we continued to suck in air.
I looked over my shoulder and realized we were both on our knees. The reaper was still there but backing away. He was angry but also looked relieved. It jerked its head to the side, smiled, and then disappeared.
I turned back to Dean feeling the energy once again passing back and forth and swirling in my chest. “Dean?”
“Yeah, creepy as hell but I saw it too.” He brushed hair out of my face, “you…”
I shook my head, “us. Did you feel that…” I glanced down to his chest, pressing my hand over his sternum trying to find the words for it.
“Like a bomb went off in my chest when you kissed me?”
My gaze shot up to his and I nodded, “that's a good way to phrase it.”
“The bond thing?”
“She said it was powerful. I mean if souls are supposed to be this insanely powerful energy, I can see how linking two together would be... ” Something John had said sparked to new life in my mind, you two are like a spotlight.
“Trippy.” Dean rose to his feet pulling me with him, “what were you saying?”
“What?”
“I could hear you saying something in latin.”
“I don’t know…” I thought about the words that had suddenly popped in my head but I couldn't grasp them now. “I think I commanded the bond to connect? Like strengthened it somehow…” I frowned looking down at my hands as fear crept along the edges of my mind that I couldn’t grasp.
Dean wrapped his arm around me and started walking, “come on, let’s get back to the car.”
I tried to read his mind but everything seemed to be back to normal, our normal. I could feel how tired he was, an exhaustion that was pulling at me too but I couldn’t read his thoughts or hear him in my head. I glanced at him as we picked our way back to the impala, “I heard you too. You were saying sorry. Sorry that you couldn’t stay and for breaking your promise.”
He squeezed my hand, “it’s been a trippy night. Maybe talk about it after some sleep?”
I pressed into his side and nodded, “yeah. I could sleep for days.”
His chuckle bubbled through my chest. We were alive, we were okay, and a little mystery was just part of our normal too. “So I guess we don't need a separate room.”
He slammed to a stop as his head snapped in my direction. “That's happening.”
~~
Waking up in Dean’s arms was something I could never get bored with. I thought about the normal fights people have after living together for so long but as long as I woke up to this, I would always know everything was going to work out. It was a faulty argument since I knew I wouldn’t always get to wake up exactly like this with his arm slung over my side.
That was just real life though, we won’t be together every night, things happen and we’ll end up being a part, hopefully not as long as any of our separations before. That incoherent fear bounced along the periphery again like a shadow I only see from the corner of my eye. When I tried to reach for it, it vanished. That was getting fucking annoying.
“Morning sunshine.” Dean’s lips pressed against my shoulder.
I rolled to face him and covered my mouth with the sheet, “wanna shower? Maybe brush our teeth?”
He pushed me to my back and rolled on top of me attacking my sides, “are you trying to say I stink?”
I squirmed underneath him laughing like a maniac. “Stop! Yes! You do!” Suddenly, his weight was gone and I sat up. He was sauntering into the bathroom completely naked and I watched him as he leaned into the shower and turned on the water.
He looked back at me as he waited for the water to heat up, “well? You coming or what?”
I smiled and jumped out of the bed, “soon, love. Definitely soon.”
That brilliant smile as he raked his gaze over me, “I love it when you read my mind.”
“You just like me because I laugh at your jokes.”
He wrapped his arm around me and pulled me to his chest dancing us into the bathroom, “maybe I need to show you that it's both and so much more.”
I hummed as he back stepped into the shower pulling me with him. “Mmmm, please do.”
~~
After we dressed, Dean packed our bags as I finished drying my hair in the bathroom.
“I’m going to take these to the car. Meet you in Sam’s room?”
My phone danced on the porcelain sink and I grabbed it before it fell off the edge. I turned off the hairdryer and read Sam’s text. Yeah. Any minute now. Is he coming?
“Did you hear me?” Dean asked.
“Stop by Sam’s room first. He’s probably ready to go,” I replied as I tapped out a response to Sam. Yup.
“Gotcha.”
I looked into the mirror and smiled. He definitely didn’t need to have that guilt eating away at him. Hopefully, this would work at least a little. Layla was a genuine optimist and maybe her peace would spread to him.
I double checked that Dean got everything before I left the room. Sam stepped into the hallway and shut his door, “you ready?”
I stared at the door behind him, “already? How did he look?”
Sam walked toward me pulling the keys from his pocket, “shocked. You really think this will work?”
“It’s the only thing that can. You know how he is. Maybe talking to her will help put it behind him.” I pulled my phone from my pocket, “I called her earlier when I first got up and she said she’d be ready. She better be. I am not walking in on her again.”
Sam chuckled, “are you ever going to let that go?”
“Hey, just because you enjoyed the view.” I laughed at the blush that crept up his cheeks. “I don’t mind picking her up but I will never enter her room again. We will wait in the parking lot. You told Dean we’d pick him up after we got her, right?”
He rolled his eyes, “I’m hurt that you think I can’t handle things.”
I poked him with my elbow, “I missed messing with you.”
“You’ve been back with us for weeks.”
“Yeah, but I missed years. Oh, and that time you walked out on us.”
“For a day and I recall making it back just in time to save your ass.”
“Excuse me, it was your brother’s ass. I didn't get jumped by the children of the corn part fifty-seven.”
He threw his back laughing then squeezed me as we approached the impala. “Yeah, but things will be better from here on out. No more following the road that others make for us, right?”
I nodded and detached from him to make my way around to the passenger door with a stab of guilt all my own. “Exactly.”
~~
Dean sat next to Layla knowing Y/n set this up with Sam. Her words last night about his guilt and how they couldn’t save everyone playing in his head as Layla told him what happened inside the tent and then brought up Sue Ann. But he wasn’t thinking about the job. He couldn’t stop thinking about the woman that saved his life more times than he could count.
“Roy’s a good man, he doesn’t deserve what’s happened.” Y/n’s whispers from last night interrupted his thoughts, no matter what happens, you will always be mine and I know you will never let me down. It’s the one truth I’ve held onto since I was five years old.
He glanced at Layla remembering that not everyone had what he did. “Must be rough, to believe in something so much and have it disappoint you like that.”
Dean looked down at his hands recalling the feel of y/n’s lips on his when that blast went off inside him shoving the reaper off. Would there ever be a day that she didn't save him? There were times when he didn't feel like he deserved her but she never ceased to erase those doubts.
He didn't have faith in much but she was the one that never let him down. He was damn lucky to have her and he’d never let her go a day without knowing that.
“You wanna hear something weird?”
For a second, he almost expected her to say something about the storm going on in his head. “Hm?”
“I’m okay. Really. I guess if you’re going to have faith, you can’t just have it when the miracles happen. You have to have it when they don’t.”
It was like a sucker punch to his gut. Layla had no idea how her words hit him, striking upon the guilt and fear deep within him. She wasn’t just pointing out what Y/n had said about not saving everyone but that maybe there was some plan that he wasn’t aware of, a plan that Y/n thought involved the four of them. Four. The number didn’t make sense yet fit perfectly.
He cleared his throat, “so, what now?”
“God works in mysterious ways.”
Dean gazed into her eyes as she reached up and touched his head a lot like the way Roy did. The cynical side of him said it was just what she had taken in during the last few months watching Roy but another part of him wondered if it was more than that. Is it possible that God did step in and decide to do some good with it?
Even when Y/n was little, she had this idea that God stepped in but only for random acts here and there. He just thought that people saw what they wanted to believe but there were plenty of things he didn’t understand so how could he possibly disregard it?
Layla smiled and stood from the bed. “Tell her it was nice meeting the two of you. It’s refreshing seeing something like that. Just doesn’t seem so common anymore.”
“What do you mean?”
“The way you two look at each other and move together? It's like you're one person. It's nice to know that kind of love is still a possibility.” She nodded, “goodbye, Dean.”
She headed for the door and he stood up, “Hey.” She turned around and he could almost feel her heartbreak but knew it was just in his head. He cleared his throat, “I’m not much of the praying type but I’m gonna pray for you.”
She told him that was a miracle but his mind was already racing. She left the room and he stared at the door. Y/n knew that talking to her would help him with his guilt but for some reason, he felt like he was given a warning, some moment on the horizon when the miracle wouldn’t come but he couldn’t grasp it. The more he tried, the further it seemed to slip.
He sat down on the bed going through the whole conversation. A plan that involved the four of us. Where the hell did that come from? His phone went off in his pocket and he pulled it out. It was a text from Y/n, on the way back. Are you still talking? We can give you time.
He grinned and replied, no. Ready to go.  He thought about adding we need to talk but decided against it. He could wait until they had a moment alone to find out when and how she got this idea. It didn’t matter how he got it, they’d had plenty of extraordinary sharing recently. He seriously wanted to know who the hell the fourth was and if she even knew.
~~
I stood just to the side of the security line with Pamela not wanting to say goodbye. Dean and Sam had hugged her goodbye and stood together a few yards away giving us our own time.
“Well, I got a lot of work to do.”
I looked away from Sam and met Pamela’s gaze, “when you see her, tell her I’m trying everything I can.”
“For the last time, Jess understands. She is learning what she needs to because she knows the demon is coming for her as long as Sam’s involved.” She raised her brow approvingly, “she’s actually a pretty good shot.” Pamela dropped her bag and grasped my upper arms. “She’s never going to blame you for saving her life. You need to put that behind you. You were always so good with that before.”
“But this is different,” I glanced around, “I feel like I’m lying to him every time he misses her and I don’t tell him.”
Pamela hugged me tightly, “you and I both know if he knows she’s alive the demon will hunt her down. As long as he thinks she’s gone so will the demon. It felt a death that night. That’s all his arrogant ass needed but you have to know he’d be checking in on Sam and if that loss is gone...”
“Do you really think it can read… sorry, I know. But he's going to hate me.”
“Doing the right thing isn’t always easy especially in this line of work, but he loves you, you're family. Even if he hates you for a while, which I don't think is possible for that boy, but he’ll still love you and he’ll come around. If not, Jess might just kick his ass.”
I squeezed her and tucked my head into shoulder, “thank you so much for coming. For everything.”
“Anytime, honey. I need top ups too.” My father’s sentiment echoed in my head, family has a way of recharging your batteries better than any amount of sleep can. “Besides I may not be able to rock his world but that boy of yours is one good looking piece of…”
“Don’t.”
She grinned as she pulled away, “I don’t have to tell you, I can see how much he satisfies you. Mmm, you hit the jackpot, honeybee.” I chuckled and she brushed the back of her fingers over my cheek, a favored touch of endearment she shared with my dad. “If there was anyone worth sealing for, it’d be that fine man.” She kissed my cheek, “you three stay safe, you hear me?”
“Yes, Aunt Pama.”
She frowned, “must you?” I laughed as she stared at Dean’s ass. “I bet he’ll just keep getting better with age too. You youngin’s always get lucky.”
“Go on! Before they hear you.”
She turned to them and waved, “you boys stay tasty!”
Dean grinned and wiggled his brows winking at a few people staring their way while Sam grinned then looked down at the ground.
She gave me one last hug, “give your mom a call, okay? I know she doesn't agree with your lifestyle, but can you really blame her?” She pulled back with a smile, “see you soon.” She walked into the security line and I strolled back to Dean and Sam trying to remember the last time I called my mother.
“Tasty, huh?” Dean slipped his arm over my shoulder.
“Hush.”
“Yeah, please. Bad enough I know what happens when I’m not around.” Sam glanced back as we headed for the door.
“Come on, Sammy. We’re all adults here.”
“Funny because Y/n and I seem to be the only ones acting like it.”
I grinned up at dean and heard his voice in my head, we need to talk. He obviously saw my shock and smirked, interesting. How have we never tried this before?
I blinked, I'm sorry, I think I'm losing my mind.
Yeah, I know the feeling.
I’ll have to text Pamela when she landed and add telepathic communication to the list of things from this bond. The boys and I walked out of the airport and I had the strangest feeling that something had changed again.

Postcards from La Dea II: Exploring French Polynesia
Postcards from La Dea II: Exploring French Polynesia
During her global circumnavigation, La Dea II ventured to the finest destinations off the beaten track; including Tahiti, Fiji, Cook Islands and Vanuatu before charting course to Australia, Asia and beyond.
“The highlight of our trip is the itinerary itself,” says Captain Paul Hutchinson, who has been particularly struck by the remote beauty and diversity of the areas visited. “We sat in an amazing coral fringed bay for three days and didn’t see another yacht, not even in passing. It was impossible to not be taken by the sheer beauty and stillness of the surroundings.”
Now back in the Mediterranean, we look back at her journey by exploring each destination from on board; starting with Fiji and Tahiti in the first of a new feature series.
Fiji Fiji’s sugar sand and crystal water is nothing short of the best in the world, poised against the backdrop of luscious landscapes luxurious places to stay it provides a dream-like island experience for superyacht charters.
But those itching to get something more from their charter needn’t head to extreme destinations on an explorer vessel to become intrepid travelers, as can be seen in La Dea II's postcard gallery below.
Cited by many as one of the best places to swim with sharks, Fiji is home to Cathedral Reef and the opportunity to go underwater with grey reef sharks, bull sharks, tiger sharks, black tips, white tips, the tawny nurse, leopards and hammerheads, all under a community conservation project.
What’s more, with new luxury bolt-hole’s and private island rentals opening right next to all the action, there’s never been a more exciting time to visit Fiji whilst still feeling like the first ever person to discover its territory.
Tahiti Lured by land or by sea, the island of Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia. Far from the Med and lesser well-known than the Caribbean, it’s a charter destination which falls somewhere between Australia’s east and The America’s west, yet provides everything that’s on offer from its neighbours, and more.
With untouched natural beauty and a world teeming with life both above and below the water, Tahiti is a mecca for whale watching, surfing, underwater exploration and on-land hiking before retiring to the sundeck to watch deep red fill the sky and ignite the Pacific.
Merge this adventure with the superyacht lifestyle, paired with a world of boutique spas and escapes on terra firma, the draw of Tahiti becomes more apparent with every postcard.
On Board “Cruising in remote areas has helped the crew to gel as a team unit and everyone plays a role in ensuring that guest time aboard is truly memorable,” explains Captain Hutchinson. “The crew really care for her and she has become a much loved yacht; I think that shines through for anyone to see.”
Aside from her crew, exploration is a key part of her identity as La Dea II is much more than just a luxury vessel. A globally capable platform for both adventure and relaxation, her recent refit in 2015 has created an immaculately maintained home on the water, ready to accommodate any charter guest’s vision of escape.
The finer details of La Dea II push the sense of adventure and luxury even further, with a divemaster, on board Phantom drone, an arsenal of water toys, bicycles for on-land exploration and space for up to 12 guests across a simple, sophisticated and stylish interior.
The IYC charter yacht La Dea II is a remarkable addition to the global charter fleet and, following a global voyage, is now back in the Med and available for charter in the Balearics this summer.
