Tamales Dulces (Sweet Tamales)
Prep: 50 mins Cook: 90 mins Total: 2 hrs 20 mins Yield: 20 tamales
 Ingredients
 For the Hibiscus Jam Filling
   1 cup dried hibiscus flowers
2 whole cardamom pods, lightly cracked open
   2 whole cloves
   1 cinnamon stick
   1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
   1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
   1 cup granulated sugar
   2 cups water
 For the Masa Dough
   2 1/2 cups (240 grams) masa harina
   3/4 cup granulated sugar
   1/2 teaspoon baking powder
   1/2 teaspoon sea salt
   1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
   1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
   1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
   1 cup coconut oil
1 vanilla bean pod, or 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup rice milk, or other plant-based milk
   25 to 30 corn husks
 Steps to Make It
 Make the Filling
   Gather the ingredients.
In a medium saucepan, combine dried hibiscus petals, 2 cardamom pods, 2 cloves, 1 cinnamon stick, 1/2 teaspoon each of ginger and nutmeg, and 1 cup of sugar. Pour in water and bring to a boil over medium heat.
Lower to a simmer and cook, uncovered, until the liquid reduces by a little more than half into a light syrup, about 35 minutes.
Remove from heat. Allow to cool, about 15 minutes, then remove the cinnamon stick and cardamom pods.
Add the syrup and hibiscus petals to a blender and blend into a smooth, thick consistency. Scrape into a smaller bowl and set aside.
 Make the Dough
   Gather masa dough ingredients.
Meanwhile, in a large bowl, mix together masa harina, sugar, baking powder, salt, ground cardamom, ground cinnamon, and ground cloves.
In another large bowl, whip the coconut oil with an electric hand mixer or in a stand mixer until smooth, about 3 minutes.
Fold the masa and spices mixture into the coconut oil. Scrape the seeds of the vanilla bean into the mixture (or add vanilla extract).
Gradually pour in the rice milk while whipping with the mixer until the dough is airy and creamy, about 2 to 3 minutes.
 Assemble and Cook the Tamales
Submerge corn husks in a deep bowl of hot water. Soak until soft and pliable, about 5 minutes.
Working with 2 to 4 husks at a time, or 1 at a time, if you are a beginner, shake off excess water before laying the husk out onto a clean work surface area. If your husks are very narrow, use two overlapping husks.
Take 2 or 3 of the husks, and tear them lengthwise, following the grain, into quarter-inch-thick strips. Set aside on a small plate.
Set out your ingredients in an assembly line: your corn husks, your masa, and your filling.
Spoon 1/4 cup of dough closer to the wider end of each husk and spread out into a 3 x 3 square. Top with 1 tablespoon of the hibiscus jam in the center of the dough.
Now you are ready to fold the tamales. Carefully bring the sides together to meet at the center, enclosing the filling.
Then fold the bottom tip of the husk over the filled section. If your jam is a little loose, some of it might leak out of the top or bottom, but that's ok, as long as it's held inside the corn husk.
Take one of the husk strips and use it to tie the tamale together, crosswise. Set aside.
Set a steamer basket inside a large pot and pour water just until it reaches the basket. Bring the water to a simmer. Begin layering in the tamales, folded-end down. Cover with a lid and cook over medium heat. Steam for 50 minutes, checking water occasionally to replace if it evaporates.
Once tamales are cooked, remove from the pot and cool until they can be handled. Best when eaten immediately.
 Warnings
After steaming the tamales, open the lid slowly and carefully. The steam released can be hot enough to burn skin.
 Tips
Take time to invest in high-quality ingredients for the best-tasting and most nutrient-rich results.
We recommend Bob’s Red Mill masa harina, available at most grocery stores, or Masienda masa harina, available online.
Masa harina, and corn husks may be found in the International section of your grocery store, or at a Latin American market.
We recommend buying spices from Diaspora Co. for the freshest flavors.
 Variations
It's traditional, especially in central Mexico, to tint sweet tamales pink using food coloring or other natural food coloring. This is especially helpful if your household is making different kinds of tamales on the same day. Add a few drops of coloring to the masa after you've achieved the consistency you want. Whip just long enough to evenly distribute the coloring.
Hibiscus flowers are sold in most Latin American markets (as flor de jamaica) and in many tea shops. You can also find them online. If you have trouble finding dried hibiscus petals, you can substitute with fresh or frozen cherries, cranberries, and even chopped roasted beets.
Experiment with other fillings, such as pineapple preserves and raisins, strawberry jam and cream cheese, shredded coconut, and dulce de leche or cajeta with pecans and cream cheese.
If you have access to fresh masa, use the same measurements of masa dough ingredients, except for the rice milk. You will most likely need less liquid, so be careful to add it gradually.
Serve tamales drizzled with caramel sauce.
Make the tamales with banana leaves instead of corn husks. Trim the leaves to 8-inch squares. Use the same method to fold and then tie shut with kitchen string.
 How to Store and Freeze
Store cooked and cooled tamales in an airtight container, a zip lock or vacuum-sealed bag, in the refrigerator.
Keep tamales in the refrigerator for up to one week.
To reheat refrigerated tamales, steam in husks for 5 to 8 minutes, or reheat in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes.
To freeze tamales, wrap individually in foil, then place in a freezer-safe bag.
Thaw frozen tamales overnight in the refrigerator and re-steam for 5 to 8 minutes. Or, skip thawing in the fridge and re-steam for 15 minutes.
 Make Ahead
You can make the hibiscus jam one to three days in advance. The masa dough is best made right before making the tamales.

National Banana Day
Orange you glad I didn’t say banana? Enjoy some banana based treat like banana bread, a banana split, or even banana punch, and tell some terrible jokes.
National Banana Day is a bit like a heady mix of April Fool’s Day and Halloween (of course, without the trick or treating and vandalism) and with a helpful portion of healthy eating thrown in for good measure!
So, get ready to Go Bananas on National Banana Day!
History of National Banana Day
National Banana Day is a yearly event that is aimed at celebrating bananas in every conceivable sense of the word–because the banana is certainly a fruit worth celebrating!
While bananas are believed to have originated in Southeast Asia, mainly in India. They made their way west by Arab conquerors in 327 BC, and eventually bananas ended up in Europe. By the 1870s, bananas made their way to the Caribbean with missionaries, where the bananas were originally used for micro crops (which means growing one crop that helps another crop to grow). Eventually, though, bananas became a lucrative crop in their own right.
The popularity of bananas in the West grew throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. As they became more affordable and less exotic, bananas were added to special dishes like the banana split, or used in baking recipes like banana bread.
Regarding the origins of National Banana Day, it is known that every year students at many prestigious American universities use National Banana Day as a way of celebrating this humble fruit as a lunchbox standard. On this day, they eat and share weird and wonderful banana concoctions (banana punch, anyone?), they dress as bananas and they generally go a bit…well…nuts.
And bananas too, of course.
National Banana Day is the perfect day to find solace in this world-renowned fruit that is useful and beneficial on so many levels. Happy National Banana Day!
National Banana Day Timeline
327 BC Bananas are brought from East to West
Arab conquerors bring this yellow fruit when Alexander the Great sends his armies to descend upon India.
1516 Bananas make a debut in the Caribbean
Brought by a Portuguese monk missionary, Friar Thomas de Berlanga, bananas reach the New World.
1834 Mass production of bananas begins
Banana trees are planted and production begins on a larger scale, especially in the Caribbean.
1907 First Banana Split is made
At his restaurant in Wilmington, Ohio, Ernest R. Hazard creates this new ice cream treat, the Banana Split which he hopes will attract college students to his shop.
1930s Banana Bread is invented
The first Banana Bread recipe is popularized when baking soda comes on the market in the United States.
How to Celebrate National Banana Day
Celebrating National Banana Day seems like a great time to get creative and enjoy a big load of fun! After all, there aren’t many days in the year when it is allowed to legitimately goof off and also have a little fruit-based fun, so why not take a (banana) leaf out of the students’ book and go a little bit bananas today?
Consider these ideas for celebrating National Banana Day:
Make a Banana Treat
Get creative in the kitchen and enjoy what monkeys have known all along–the banana is a fabulous food! Try these delicious treats to eat alone or share with friends:
Banana Split. A classic American tradition, the banana split uses the two halves of a sliced banana, some scoops of ice cream (usually one of each vanilla, chocolate and strawberry), and toppings such as hot fudge, whipped cream, nuts and cherries.
Banana Bread. Although the same recipe will bake more quickly when poured into muffin tins, there is something special about a dense loaf of warm banana bread. No matter what shape they are in, this is a great way to use up bananas that have gotten a bit over-ripe or brown, because over ripe bananas are sweeter.
Bananas Flambe. This French Caribbean treat is made from peeled banana halves fried in oil and then coated with rum and sugar. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, of course, it makes a delightful and dramatic show of a simple food!
Chocolate Covered Bananas. Channel that inner Arrested Development character (Bluth family, anyone?) by freezing some bananas and dipping them into chocolate–add nuts too!
Host a Banana Party
Throwing a party for National Banana Day is a great way to observe and celebrate this occasion. And certainly it’s not hard to decorate with a banana theme! Just make sure everything is yellow and green, including paper plates, napkins, balloons, tablecloths and streamers.
For an activity that doubles as a snack, provide a chocolate dipping station (aka fondue) or chocolate fountain where guests can dip slices of banana. For extra fun, supply other items for dipping, such as sprinkles, small candies, or mini marshmallows.
Learn Fun Facts About Bananas
In honor of National Banana Day, it might be a fun idea to share some information and facts about bananas with family and friends! Here are some bits of trivia to get started with:
A banana is technically not a fruit, it’s really a berry! This has to do with the fact that the seeds are located inside the flesh rather than on the outside.
Because they contain so much of the isotope Potassium-40, bananas are technically radioactive. The good news is that they can’t harm a person unless they are eating around 700 or more bananas per day for their entire lifetime.
Bananas cannot be grown simply from a seed, which means they are technically “sterile”. Instead, in order to propagate bananas, a piece from another banana plant has to be split and then grown, sort of like cloning.
The growth of popularity of bananas can be partially attributed to Jules Verne, the American author who wrote about the fruit in his book Around the World in 80 Days, which brought them to the forefront of many people’s minds.
Try Some New Recipes for National Banana Day
Other treats that can be served at a banana party, or simply taken to the office to share with coworkers, include banana muffins or banana bread (same recipe, but muffins are faster to bake and a bit easier to serve). Bananas also make a delicious and healthy additive to milkshakes or smoothies, they can be sliced up and put on top of a bowl of cereal in the morning, or they can be mashed up and put into pancakes.
Banana cake, banana ice cream, banana splits or banana pudding are all delicious and delightful recipes that can be enjoyed in honor of National Banana Day. Or try out a classic frozen banana dipped in chocolate as mentioned above.
Another treat made with bananas was also rumored to be a favorite of the pop singer, Elvis Presley, which was the peanut butter and banana sandwich
Listen to a Banana Playlist
There is no better day than National Banana Day to get jamming with a fruit-focused playlist on Spotify or another music hosting website. Play it at the above-mentioned Banana Party or listen alone. Try out a few of these songs or add a few other creative ones:
Day O [The Banana Boat Song] (1956) by Harry Belafonte
Thirty Thousand Pounds of Bananas (1974) by Harry Chapin
Yes, We Have No Bananas (1923) by Louis Prima
Hollaback Girl (2004) Gwen Stefani
Apples and Banana (1985) by Raffi
Banana in Your Fruit Basket (1991) by Bo Carter
Apples, Peaches, Bananas and Pears (1967) by The Monkees
Tell Some Banana Jokes
Get a little silly and have a laugh (or groan) with friends or family using a variety of banana jokes like these:
What kind of key can open a banana? A Mon-key!
Why did the banana go to the doctor? It wasn’t peeling well.
Why are bananas never lonely? Because they come in bunches.
What’s the easiest way to make a banana split? Cut it in half!
What do bananas say when they answer the phone? “Yellow?”
National Banana Day FAQs
Is there a National Banana Day?
Yes! National Banana Day is the day that people all over choose to celebrate everything to do with this delicious and nutritious yellow fruit.
When is National Banana Day?
National Banana Day is celebrated on the third Wednesday of April each year, so the date changes with the calendar.
Are Bananas good for you?
Emphatically yes! Tasty and nutritious, bananas contain fiber, protein, potassium, vitamins, manganese and more.

today is charrería, the famous traditional rodeo. the entire village attends. excitement and anticipation fills the arena. traditional music plays, food and drinks provided. you and your family are seated in the fourth row. your dad and carlos munch on elotes while you enjoy a churro. you can never pass by a churro, or a concha if they sold them.
after some time of waiting and everyone settled in their seats, the show begins. the charros enter the arena, making the audience cheer and clap.
you spot the o’hara brothers, the third ones to enter the arena. the audience go berserk, lots of whistles and cheers. your eyes dilate in pure delight at the sight of miguel. oh how handsome he looks in his attire, despite the fact he wears it all the time. he just looks even more attractive when he participates in charrería, seeing him in action.
after a few moments of preparation, the show actually begins. your eyes focus on miguel during the entirety of it, sometimes gabriel as well. you root for the brothers, cheering and squealing in enthusiasm like majority of the audience were.
throughout the show, miguel would occasionally make eye contact with you. either a grin or a smirk would appear on his face, knowing you are impressed by his skills. every time you attended a show, he always show off. he adored the way your eyes widen in surprise, lips apart or curled into a smile when watching him do his stunts. the gasps you let out whenever he does a risky move.
after 2 hours, the show concludes and everyone exits the arena. you wanted to stay afterwards to see miguel, congratulate him and gabriel, but you had to leave to get ready for the party. luckily, it’s at their home so you’ll have the chance to.
     ━━━━━━━━ ִ  ۫   ꒰ ♡ ꒱  ۫   ݂ ━━━━━━━━
after returning home to change, you and your family head over to the o’hara ranch for la fiesta. you choose to wear an ruffled red dress and a pair of matching heels. matching red lipstick to compliment your outfit. your hair hangs down gracefully with curls. as the fashionista you are, you want to appear stylish.
the ranch is packed with fellow residents of the village. not only indoors but also the backyard, the focal point of the party. live mariachi performs on a tiny stage near the back. a group of people dance in front of them, creating a small dance floor. numerous tables spread out across the yard, people eating and conversing with each other. off to the side is the food, several tables with displays of food. some basics such as carne asada, frijoles, tamales, enchiladas, arroz con chicken, tortas, and pazole. the drinks consist of water, jamaica, horchata, and beer. as for desserts: typical flan, empanadas, and tres leches cake. the menu is absolutely delicious.
while your parents greet other people, you wander off to the backyard. you glance around the area, recognizing several faces. as you continue wandering around, multiple young men gawk at you, enthralled by your beauty in the red dress. you feel their eyes on you, making you blush at the thought. some walk past you, tipping their sombreros with a smile, presenting themselves as the gentlemen they are. of course as the kind soul you are, you return the same kindness with a smile as acknowledgment.
making his appearance, miguel steps foot into the yard. he wears a dark blue charro outfit, replacing his typical black one. as he walks, his eyes scan the area looking one special person. guests greet him as he passes by, offering them a brief smile while continuing on searching for one particular person. then, his eyes catch a glimpse of red in the sea of people. there you are, standing near the dance floor glancing around. his eyes dilate drastically, lips apart in utter astonishment. you appear like a beautiful red rose in a garden. a rose so delicate, so precious to not dare to pick. how breathtaking and gorgeous you look in red; definitely one of your best colors. it highlights your beautiful skin and hair gracefully. miguel could feel the heat in his face and chest, heart fluttering at the sight of you. is it possible to fall for someone even more than before?
completely hypnotized by your beauty, miguel finally begins moving towards your direction. he tries his best to not collide with others as he approaches you. the closer he gets, the heat in his chest increases as a sign of nervousness. he is blinded by love. you are facing the opposite direction, your back to him as miguel approaches you. instead of tapping your shoulder, he decides to be a bit sneaky just to earn a cute little reaction from you.
“te ves muy linda, señorita.” miguel whispers seductively with a grin, hands behind his back.
a shiver creeps down your spine at the sound of a very familiar baritone voice, causing you to turn around swiftly. “oh! gracias, miguel.” you blush at the compliment, softly smiling in response.
oh how handsome he looks in that dark blue suit. it compliments him better than his black one. but full honesty, miguel appears handsome in any clothing.
he got that cute reaction like he wanted, causing him to smile. “te gusta la fiesta so far, hermosa?” miguel asks, a grin gracing his lips.
you nod with a bashful smile. “sí, elegant as always.”
miguel smiles in return. his gaze quickly shifts to the dance floor then back to you. an idea pops in his mind; an opportunity he can’t miss. he extends out his left hand. “quieres a bailar conmigo?”
a surprise expression illustrates on your face, your heart skipping a beat. miguel, the most handsome man in the village, asking you for a dance? it feels like a dream. you can’t pass this opportunity.
“i would love to.” you softly answer with fluttering lashes, tenderly taking his hand.
a spark ignites between you two the moment your hands interlock with each other. the size difference is amusing yet adorable, how gigantic his hand is compared to your smaller one.
giving your hand a gentle squeeze, miguel slowly guides you to the dance floor. his eyes never leaves you. once you two settled on the dance floor before the next song plays, he wraps his right hand around your waist while his left remains interlocked with your right. your body shivers at sensation, causing you to inhale sharply. you rest your left hand on his shoulder. as the mariachi begins the next song, your bodies start swaying together in harmony. miguel leads while you follow along. it’s not that you don’t know how to dance, you’re just super nervous since you’re dancing with the man of your dreams.
the two of you continue swaying together. you struggle to maintain eye contact, considering that you’re so flustered by the proximity. this didn’t go unnoticed by miguel, which he finds it utterly adorable. him, on the other hand, is also a nervous reck. he is dancing with the woman he loves, of course he’s experiencing with these emotions and feelings. these feelings encourages him to increase the intimacy, the connection between you two.
“¿puedo ver tus ojos, hermosa?” miguel whispers, leaning down towards your ear.
you immediately look up at him, a surprise expression illustrated on your face. “¿mis ojos?”
the corner of his lips raise into a smile, happy that you granted his wish. “sí, i want to connect while we dance. make it more meaningful.”
your cheeks flushed in heat, lashes fluttering at his words. oh it’s gonna be tough to maintain eye contact with such a handsome man that you like so dearly. you try your hardest to do so, but deep down you feel so flustered. his gorgeous brown hues staring into yours. god it feels impossible yet you begin to feel the connection that he mentioned.
you and miguel keep eye contact as you continue dancing. soon, the song begins picking up the rhythm and the dancing becomes more energetic. miguel would seek opportunities to twirl you around, making you giggle shyly. the skirt part of your dress flows, revealing your legs underneath. his heart flutters as he watches your dress flow as you spin, mesmerized by the red expanding so beautifully. he also would dip you before twirling you again then continue dancing. laughter escapes your lips each twirl and dip, causing miguel to smile or do the same. the two of you having a wonderful, fulfilling each other’s fantasies of moments like this.
     ━━━━━━━━ ִ  ۫   ꒰ ♡ ꒱  ۫   ݂ ━━━━━━━━
after an amazing dance session, the two of you exit the dance floor and head over towards the tables. you have one arm linked around his muscular one as you two walk together. you can feel how sturdy and robust he is. god you could melt at the sensation, loving how strong miguel is. before you could snatch a table, your parents approached you both. they mirror yours and miguel’s stance.
“hola, mijos. did you two have fun?” your mom asks with a smile, holding a glass of jamaica.
“sí, señora. we had a great time.” miguel replied kindly with a nod, mirroring her smile.
your mom smiles but your dad, on the other hand, has a skeptical eye on miguel. of course all fathers are protective of their daughters, but mainly because he is aware of miguel’s popularity among the village. how much of a womanizer he is. although miguel is a gentleman, your dad is still skeptical of his intentions; especially with his daughter.
“you were careful with my daughter, verdad?” your dad asked in a slight intimidating demeanor, arching a brow in skepticism. the protectiveness kicking in.
you lightly glare at him, visibly confused as to why he would ask such a question. your mom gently nudged his side with her elbow as a sign of anger.
miguel remains professional, understanding his skepticism. “claro qué sí, señor [l/n]. i made sure your daughter was safe and having a good time.”
that skeptical look in his eyes is still intact but eases up a bit, his shoulders relaxed slightly. your dad simply nods, not uttering another word.
god you feel embarrassed yet slightly angry. he shouldn’t have questioned miguel in that manner, it was highly unnecessary.
to ease the tension, your mom steps in. “well, we will leave you two be.” she offers a smile at you both before walking away with your dad. she is definitely going to give him a hard time in private later.
the uneasy feeling in your body fades away, a heavy sigh escaping your lips. “i’m so sorry about that, it was rude of him to ask that.” you avert your eyes from his, looking down in embarrassment.
“don’t be, mi flor. i understand his concern, he’s just protective of you.” miguel reassured you so sweetly, tilting your chin up with his free hand.
you look up at him, his eyes staring into yours with sincerity and kindness. you simply nod with a little smile, knowing he’s right. maybe too protective.
the two of you heads towards the back, away from the sea of people. your arms unlink from each other as you now stand in front of each other. you fiddle with your dress, patting down any creases or folds on the red fabric. it was a bit wrinkly from the dancing.
“you look perfect, hermosita.” miguel said, noticing you fixing your dress which he finds it adorable.
you look up at him, brows furrowed in a surprised manner. “are you sure?” you sound doubtful. the last thing you want is to look messy in front of miguel.
he lowly chuckles, gingerly placing a hand on your upper arm with a loving squeeze as reassurance. “en serio, mi flor.” in his eyes, you’re perfect.
your body shivers at his touch, goosebumps forming on your skin. hints of pink stain your cheeks.
before you could utter a word, gabriel approaches you both. “ah i figured you two would be together.” a little smirk forms on his lips.
miguel shoots him a light glare, visibly irritated.
“hola, gabriel.” you softly smile at the younger o’hara, who is actually close to your age.
he returns the smile, tipping his sombrero. “wow, you look marvelous, [y/n]. muy bonita.” he gently takes your hand and plants a kiss on the back of it.
you blush at his kind words and gesture. “gracias.”
miguel internally scoffs at his brother’s flirtatious antics, even though he’s right. possible jealousy? over his damn brother? he knows gabriel is simply being nice, like he usually is with everyone. miguel brushes the thoughts aside, not allowing them to consume him. it would be ridiculous.
“i wanted to say congratulations on your performance today. you both did amazing like always.” you said sweetly, remembering your intentions from earlier.
the o’hara brothers smile at you.
“muchas gracias, [y/n]. we were happy you were there.” gabriel said with a smile as he briefly winked at his older brother when he said ‘we’ which earned him a death glare from miguel.
     ━━━━━━━━ ִ  ۫   ꒰ ♡ ꒱  ۫   ݂ ━━━━━━━━
after lots of chitchatting and eating delicious foods, the party comes to an end. guests start leaving, saying their goodbyes and parting ways. your family is one of the last ones to leave. they patiently wait for you by the entrance of the ranch, engaging in a conversation with miguel’s mother for time-killing.
miguel escorts you, walking slowly together through the house. just before you reach the entrance where you family awaits you, he gently grabs your wrist and guides you to a corner hidden from the public eye. he holds your hands in his larger ones, tenderly brushing his thumbs on the back of your hands. “gracias para bailar y spending time with me. tonight was the best night of my life.” a smile graces his plump lips.
your heart skips a beat at his confession. oh you are definitely a blushing mess now. you look up at with fluttering lashes. “it was the best night of my life también, i had a wonderful time.” you said bashfully.
his smile grows wider, visibly pleased to know you feel the same way. considering the proximity, the undeniable magnetic attraction between you two, miguel decides to take the opportunity to fulfill his biggest desire since the moment he met you. his gaze drop to your lips as he slowly, very slowly, leans closer, more accurately bending down due to the height difference. his eyes never leave your lips.
your lashes start fluttering like crazy as miguel leans more towards you. it’s clear what he’s doing and you can’t even believe it. oh your cheeks are definitely burning up at this point, probably red as your dress.
“[y/n]!” your mom calls from afar.
you blink out of trace and miguel backs away, both of you internally groaning at the interruption. although, you were taking forever to leave.
“i better go.” you whisper, offering an apologetic smile. just as you’re about to leave, miguel gently grabs your hand, making you stop in your tracks.
“perdóname, mi flor. before you go, i want to ask if you’d like to accompany me tomorrow? take a stroll around the village.” miguel asked.
oh god you can feel your heartbeat pounding in your chest and the butterflies in your stomach. how can you deny such a request? it’s all you ever dreamed of.
“sí, i’ll love to.” you softly smile at him.
a smile forms on his lips. “qué maravilla.” miguel rises your hand and plants a kiss on the back as a sign of goodbye, and of course affection.
your face flushes at the kind gesture. you give him one last smile before walking away to meet with your family, who’ve been waiting for a while.
tonight was a night to remember.

Love for Rockaleta Paleta
John Price x F!Reader
Summary: At the end of your visit to see Alejandro and Rudy, their abuela gave you a bag full of Mexican candy and Price isn’t having it.
Very short
A/n: I absolutely love Rockaleta! However, I don’t really lick them I just take a bite out of them like a heathen. Also I wasn’t sure how to spell Price’s name with the -ito endearment, Pricito, Pricto, Priceto I took four year of Spanish and clearly I don’t remember any of it.
Warning: Implied smut, just teasing Price with a lollipop
Tumblr media
“Abuelita, you know i can’t take this with me!” You whispered back to her smiling. Ever since you announced the her you were leaving, she started pulling out Tupperware full of food and desserts for you to take home. Honestly you didn’t even know how she cooked all this stuff. You swore to Gaz you almost cried after she pulled out tamales and posole. “Who said you can’t have this huh?! Is it Pricito?! I’ll have a word with him don’t you worry.” She shook her head and shoved them in your backpack. “And I’m expecting to get those tupperware back!” You waved back yelling “of course! I’ll come back when I can!” Hoping in to the beep next to Gaz, waving out the window until the sand blew back at you. Price looked at you through the rear view mirror, seeing you look so happy he couldn’t help but feel his chest tight when you made eye contact with him.
Smiling back you noticed Gaz looking over your shoulder before raising his eyebrows “trade?” Pointing at the Duvalín. You both looked up noticing Price’s arm bent back palms faced up “pass me a Mazapán” “Do you want me to open it Pricito” you dragout the last syllable remembering what abuela called him.
“Kid…yes open it please…” he rolled his eyes as you smiled triumphantly. Once you guys arrived back at base, Price called everyone to dinning room to have their share of all the food you guys brought back. It was a nice little break from all the training Ghost and Soap were putting them through.
Price swears you’re doing this on purpose at this point. Always sucking on those fucking lollipops, he could help but stay at your siting on the couch wrapping your lips around it. Running it up and down your tongue before popping it back in your mouth. He couldn’t help but imagine how you would look under him between his thighs. Looking up at him batting your eye, taking his cock all the do-
“stare at her any harder, and lasts of there will turn to stone.” Soap popped up around his shoulder before siting down next to ghost. “Shut it muppet.” Price rolled his eyes before taking a sip of his tea.
You couldn’t help but smile to yourself, you wondered just how much more teasing Price could take before he pulls you into his office and “reprimand” you.

During our vacation Sheila hired a guide to take us to really local places to try some food and drink. Ours was a walking tour. Golf cart and bike tours are available too. Next year I want to try the bike version.
We started the evening taking a taxi from our place at the north end of Isla Mujeres to the La Gloria neighborhood. We met up with our guide, Jose.
(much more after the cut)
Tumblr media
First stop: Dessert! Jose explained that people were getting too full by the end of the tours and skipping dessert. So now he likes to start with that. I don't like sweets and desserts a lot, so this was definitely the way for me to eat some -- on an empty stomach.
We entered a small courtyard in front of a home. There was a stove and griddle and one four-top table under a tin roof. Our hosts served us flan. It was excellent. This is probably the first time I've finished any dessert in years.
Tumblr media
Second stop: This was at a food cart parked in the street. A handwritten sign said "Hay Tamales," which I think means "Here are tamales."
We were served elote, a Mexican street corn salad. The portion was decent-sized and the elote was like comfort food. Had Sheila or I made this at home, it would be the sort of thing I would have left on the stove so I could snack on it all night long.
Had there not been five local people waiting in line, I probably would have broken open the foam cup to lick the bottom after I'd spooned out everything else.
Tumblr media
Third stop: Panaderia Emmanuel Bakery. Jose explained that Mexican bakeries are open in the evening, unlike the American ones that open early in the morning. We had our choice of various fresh buns, donuts, and pastries. Sheila and I each selected an item. They were tasty and large. Thank goodness we were able to take home what we couldn't eat. Had we finished the bakery items, we would have been too full to go to the next four stops. (Here is the bakery in a Google Maps picture.)
Tumblr media
Fourth stop: This was at a small, outdoor kitchen under a canvas roof. Two women were cooking food. We were served pork carnitas on a fresh bakery roll. I really liked this place. The sandwich was huge, and for real I started to wonder if I could keep eating at the remaining sites. I brought home half of the carnitas that night.
Tumblr media
Fifth stop: We entered a small, private bar. It was beautiful inside; my phone just didn't capture a decent shot of it. The pandemic killed business here. The place now is open only for small, special events.
We were here for a mezcal tasting. First we sipped Fandango, accompanied by lime and salt. I loved it. Next we sampled some house mezcal, infused with honey, vanilla, and cinnamon. Here's where things get more interesting. We drank this one with some pinches of a mixture of black pepper, salt, and crickets.
Some might think eating crickets would require a healthy dose of mezcal first. But our drink portions weren't of a size that could make me abandon all caution and agree to something like bungee jumping or swimming with great white sharks. Sheila and I didn't hesitate to try the black, powdery mix.
I would have been fine ending the tour right here, assuming I could keep drinking mezcal with the sides, including the non-vegan one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sixth stop: This was at a small, yet traditional bar and restaurant named Chile & maíz. The night we did our tour was the start of Carnival. Many people had gone to the north end of the island for the celebration, leaving this restaurant empty for the evening.
The cook prepared for us chicken tinga sopes. Could the food keep getting better that night? So far, yes. The chicken stew on a fried tortilla was delicious. And filling. Sheila and I got a to-go box for some of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apparently Chile & maíz is fairly new. I checked Google Maps to get a daylight picture (below). The logs that will eventually support a sloped roof are visible, but nothing else indicating a restaurant is being constructed. What we saw last night was very well done.
Tumblr media
Seventh stop: Jose brought us to Daria's Delivery. The chef is staring up a new business. So far it is a kitchen on the second floor of a building. There is a commercial cook top, a table with four chairs, and one green bird in a birdcage. As we entered, the chef's adorable young daughter (maybe 4-years-old) came out from the living quarters right behind the table and greeted us with a big smile.
Tumblr media
Our final dish of the night was chile relleno which is one of my favorite Mexican foods. Daria's didn't let me down. Very tasty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the tour we got to know more about Jose, his restaurant experiences, and his family. At the end he walked with us for a bit. He explained how the food tour supports the local cooks.
The tour was really fun because there's no way at all Sheila and I would have found all these small places on our own. It's not like they all had neon signs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We ended up quite full. Walking around the La Gloria neighborhood helped burn off a few of those calories. I'm sure I'll return to Isla at some time, and this will be on my to-do list.

NEW YEARS EVE • TF141 HEADCANONS
• Soap brings all the games. Usually it's Uno, Clue, One Night Ultimate Werewolf, and just a deck of cards
• Price brings the "celebratory" cigars for everyone to have when it hits midnight. No one smokes theirs except Ghost
• Gaz is the snacks dude. His go-to snacks are Doritos, Chex Mix, chips w/ bean dip, and he'll even bring desserts (ice cream, cakes)
• Ghost is usually quiet, but he does like the occasional game of One Night and is scary good at lying about not being the Werewolf. He almost always wins
• Alejandro brings the alcohol while Rudy brings food (tamales, pozole, carnitas and tortillas, etc). The two come in a pair so if one is coming, the other is too
• Soap and Rudy get into a heated game of 1v1 Uno at some point in the night. Rudy ends up winning after putting down five +4's and a blue 7
• Price and Ghost end up being the exasperated parents of the group by the time everyone gets drunk. Rudy soon joins them and watches in exasperation as Gaz and Soap drunkly play Mario Kart
• Alejandro joins the Mario Kart gaming after Gaz and Soap play a few rounds. Turns out he's an absolute GOD at the game and beats them every time. The Wii had to be turned off because Soap almost broke a remote
• Gaz learned the entire Spanish library of curses. The rest of the night he just insulted everyone and anything he looked at
• Ghost got on the Wii at one point and played Wii Sports. All of the guys got into a bowling competition and Price ended up winning
• Rudy was the first one to go to sleep. The second was Price
• When 12am hit, those who were left awake drank a shot of tequila to commemorate the finished year and to welcome the new one. Afterwards, all of them passed out on the floor or couch
• Waking up the next morning, Soap found himself cuddling Ghost on one of the couches; Gaz was laying diagonal on the floor with his head on Price's chest; and Rudy was laying on top of Alejandro and being held by him on the other couch
• Everyone of them were hung over. Gaz and Soap ended up vomiting but proceeded to eat more food afterward (did not end well)
• Ghost woke up to drink a glass of orange juice then passed out again on the couch. Price did the same except he drank coffee
• The rest of the day, they either sleep or play more games on the Wii
Happy New Year everyone!

they dont match butttttt, I. DO. NOT. CARE. PERIODT.
pairing- bf choi yeonjun x mexican female reader
warnings- hugs, kisses, food, not proofread, uhhhhh idk what else lol
yes, i did it. coming from a mexican female, i think i have a say in this. where all my mexicanas at? i love yall🫶🏻
christmas with your parents was an exciting topic for yeonjun. he always wanted to meet your parents and was extremely excited to meet them on christmas.
you arrive at you parents house and yeonjun was flowing with excitement and joy. he was excited to stay the night and he wanted to see how you lived growing up. you werent nervous about him meeting your parents at all because you knew theyd get along. you were a bit worried about the food.
what if he didnt like it? would it make your parents feel guilty? no, hes going to love it.
"mija! your here! oh i missed you!" your mom greeted you at the door as soon as she saw you. you hugged your dad next.
"mija! how are you?" "im ok, papi" yea, you called him papi, and? he your father, you love him.
"mijo! its so nice to finally meet you! how are you?" "yes it is! im alright, mrs.-" "oh, dont start that nonsense, call me mama." you heart melted at the sight of your mom and your boyfriend getting along so well.
"mijo, how are you?" "im good, mr.-" "call me suegro" (it means father in law in spanish). "alright" your dad shook yeonjuns hand and smiled very fondly at him.
"so! shall we have some dinner!" "lets eat!"
the table was decorated with pozole, tamales, pico de gallo, enchiladas and mole. yeonjun was left amazed at all the dishes on the table.
you two ere standing as your mom brought out the bowls, spices, and anything you could imagine.
"sit down mijo, get whatever you'd like, i made pozole and tamales. if you dont like that theres pico de gallo, enchiladas, mole, and theres desserts."
"thank you" he served himself some pozole and you grabbed the bowl of tortilla chips to eat with the pozole. (thats how i eat it lmao, if you eat it differently, adjust it as you wish)
"uh, y/n how do i eat it?" he nervously giggled and stared at his bowl in confusion.
"you can use your spoon to drink the soup, you can roll up the tortilla to dip it in the soup and use the spoon to eat the chicken and the corn. and you can also put lime, lettuce, raddish, and chile in it."
"ok, thank you" he did as you told him to and his face lit up with delight when he took the first spoonful. "wow, this so good!'
"im glad you liked it, mijo!''
he served himself one enchilada, a small spoonful of mole, and some pico de gallo, you cant forget the tamal he put on his plate.
he ate some of everything and he loved every bite of it. you mom served him a glass of horchata and he had two cups of it!
"i'll clean up you guys go and wait in the living room, and when im done we can eat dessert!" your mom obviously could not wait until a certain dessert that ill leave to your imagination for now.
"i'll help you pick up!" yeonjun immediately refused to sit down and went to go help you mom.
in the living room, you and your dad were chatting. "so, yeonjun, really liked the food, huh, mija?" "yea, he loved it. i think he liked moms pozole best though. the chiltipin helped a lot too." "well, your mom made a lot for your could take leftovers home." "i'd love that. also, mami never made this much food for christmas when i was a little girl. we only had pozole and we bought the horchata, did she make it?' ' she did, and she was going to make birria but it takes too long." "aww, i love her birria" "come get desserts guys!!" your mom poked out of the kitchen and called you in.
when you walked in, the table had a big rosca de reyes in the middle and buñuelos and conchas, and mugs of champurrado. oh, how you missed the nostalgic smell.
"ok, who wants the first piece of it?" "be careful, if you get the baby, you need to make the tamales for everybody" "oh, uh. should i get the first piece?" "if you want" "papi, did you get the baby?" " no thankfully" "mami, give me this piece" "no baby!!!" "yeonjun, here you go!" she gave him a random slice and she bought the rosca de reyes so, she couldnt cheat. "did you get it baby?" "uh, yea." your family burst into laughter at the fact that yeonjun, who had tasted tamales for the first time today, was stuck making them!" "ay, mijo! i'll give you guys the recipe dont worry."
all the dessert was delicious and so was the champurrado. you and yeonjun cleaned up as your parents set up the living room for gifts and maybe some mistletoe. but shhhh. they may be mexican but, they still follow the trends duh.
"so, we gotta make tamales for the boys huh"
"i guess, but i dont know how to make them. and your lucky, mami never made this much food on christmas."
"im her favorite i guess" "when i was a kid, i always dreamed of getting the baby. when i turned fifteen, me and my sister got it and we were stuck with making tamales. never wanted the baby ever again."
yeonjun laughed as you walked into the living room with your mom and dad waiting. a big present marked yeonjun and y/n was waiting in your seat.
"open this one first!" you opened it and a big ol pot was wrapped up. your mom and dad were laughing and you and yeonjun were smiling. you mostly wanted to cry, you cant make tamales like girl.
everyone opened up their gifts and they gave you guys some to give to the boys back home. "alright, its really late lets go to sleep." you and yeonjun got ready for bed and went into your parents guest room. it was filled with pictures of your childhood an teen years and stuff you wouldnt really display yourself.
"good night mijo! buenas noches mija! te amo! (i love you)" your mom told you both as you were walking into your room. "buenas noches mami. te amo!" "good night mama!" you wouldve definitely melted into putty right there and then if you could.
you plopped into the bed and waited for yeonjun to finish changing. "your moms so sweet. y/n!" "i know, she was texting me nonstop in the morning asking what time we were heading over." "aww," he laid down and kissed you softly. "goodnight baby" "goodnight my love"
in the morning you were woken up with a torta that smelled like heaven. you needed to leave soon so you ate then went to your room to clean up your things. "we only ate beans and tortilas for breakfast when i was a kid. you must really be the favorite." "she loves me''
"alright, mami. the cars loaded, we're gunna get going."
"oh, wait!" she brought out three(BIG) full bags of containers of food.
"wow, this is alot. " "good, now no one will have to cook for at least a day." "with five men in the house, itll be gone in an hour"
"bye mijo, it was nice having you over and meeting you." "thank you suegro. it was nice meeting you too" yep, melted again.
"mija, bye, i love you." "bye papi, i love you too"
"mija, bye, i'll miss you. thank you for coming over. i love you" "i'll miss you too, thanks for having us. i love you too mami"
"ay mijo. i dont want you to leave." "i dont want to leave either"
"bye mijo, thank you so much for coming. i'll miss you." ''bye, mama. thank you for having us. i'll miss you too."
you two walked out the front door and got into the car.
"love you guys! say hi to the boys for me!" "we will mami! love you too!"
"bye mama! love you!!!"
and with that, you were driving back to your house. yeonjun intertwined your hands and kissed it. man he was hot driving with one hand.
the end

How did bel and Harry celebrate Christmas? What did they get each other
thanks for asking lovie 🥺 they had the sweetest day 🤍 (enjoy this 1.4k blurb)
+
Spending Christmas with Harry and his family for the second year has made her feel lucky. Sarai and Naomi were spending it with Sarai’s extended family in Mexico. Naomi’s parents would spend it with their sons and respective partners this year. It was the first year since Y/N was a teen that she would not be spending the day with Naomi.
Harry’s and Bel’s traditions were different.
Bel loved to dress up on noche buena, better known as Christmas Eve. She would have music playing, and the kitchen would be filled with food from tamales Sarai helped Bel make to flan a sweet caramelized dessert. They would all stay up into the early hours of the morning, opening gifts and enjoying time together.
While Harry’s family celebrations began on the 25th with a breakfast, Harry made with his sister, never letting their mother lift a finger. Opening presents around the tree leads to watching Christmas movies and playing games. Then by the end of the night, it’s a special dinner.
These celebrations are special to them, and Bel, over time, has kept some alive but also changed how she celebrated. Harry also wanted to help intertwine the holiday, and they’ve settled on eating tamales Harry helps her make. She laughs as he struggles to fold each banana leaf tamales. His family stays up until midnight, sharing a present before heading to bed. Then in the morning, Anne and Bel are treated to a cooked breakfast (Bel is a guest and not allowed to do more than decorate cookies). Bel felt a little homesick; not being with Naomi and Sarai but being with Harry’s family has been the perfect cure. She was welcomed with open arms. It was her favorite time because she saw Harry relaxed and happy at home.
Bel even shed a few tears when she saw her own stocking hanging next to Harry’s. It allowed her to feel right at home, knowing Anne saw her as part of the family.
Presents are something Bel is always nervous about giving. She loves wrapping presents and giving them to people she loves, but she’s always a bit anxious waiting to see their reactions, hoping they’d like it, knowing she bought it with them in mind.
Bel got Anne “Love on Tour” cookie cutters from the famous bunny to one shaped of Harry. Anne thought they were absolutely perfect and promised to make a batch with them before they left for New Year’s. Bel got Gemma a vintage coat that Gem mentioned earlier in the year she had wanted but didn’t want to splurge on something. Bel talked with Harry, and he thought it was the perfect gift.
In return, Anne knitted Bel a blanket. It was made of her favorite colors, and she promised to take good care of it. Bel knew it would be the blanket she used to travel everywhere with her. Gemma got Bel a tote with her initials embroidered and lyrics from her favorite song. It’s safe to say they nailed it with the gifts.
Harry wanted to do presents in private, only sharing a small gift. Bel gifted Harry an ornament shaped as “pão de queijo,” and he got a big laugh out of it. He was quick to share it with the band’s group chat. He gave Bel socks with Naomi and Sarai’s faces on them. It was safe to say she was shocked, but she quickly put them on.
As they cleaned up around the living room, opening up the gifts Harry got his family Bel got a call and excused herself.
“You didn’t!” Naomi accuses over facetime. Bel can see them squished together to fit in the frame.
“What are you talking about?”
“You did not buy us an all-exclusive trip to Greece.”
“But I did,” she winces at the shriek Naomi lets out.
“Thank you, Bel. It means the world to us,” Sarai thanked her.
“It’s my pleasure.”
Sarai and Naomi have both talked to Bel about a proposal in 2023, and what better place than to do it at their dream destination.
“Your gift is being shipped to you,” Sarai promises.
Bel shakes her head, “don’t even worry about it.”
They remind her they love her and hang up, leaving her overwhelmed with the feeling of the love she has for them and excited for what the future has in store for her best friends.
“Cariño, ready for presents?” Harry knocks on the door coming in with a box in his hand.
“Ready, amor.”
Harry gives you a few kisses before even thinking about unwrapping his presents.
“You’ll always be the best gift, Bel,” Harry promises her.
Bel feels her face flush. “Harry,” she laughs. “I love you.”
“I love you, baby.”
Harry urges her to open her gifts first. Bel laughs at the wrapping paper scattered with rainbows and mermaids. She likes the paper so much she’s afraid to tear through it, but Harry’s excitement urges her to keep going.
She opens the box and finds two boxes inside. Bel opens the smallest first and finds an anklet with the letter H and his birthstone, amethyst, on it. She remembers the conversation they had months ago, well more like the conversation Harry had with Sarai about how birthstones are important and a common gift given to loved ones when they want to keep someone close to them.
“It’s gorgeous, H. Taking a piece of you wherever I go.”
“Course, lovie.”
Bel can’t help herself and leans in to give him a kiss in thanks, then continues with her final present. It’s a heavier box, and she wonders what it could be. She’s careful to open it and finds a painted photo of Bel and Harry sitting on stage, wrapped up in each other, staring at each other with so much love. It’s her favorite photo.
“This is–wow,” she doesn’t even have the words to describe it.
“Think it’ll look perfect in your house, maybe in your office,” he offers.
She shakes her head, “no, this would be perfect in the living room for everyone to see.” Bel reaches towards him, gently cups his cheek, and gives him a kiss expressing her gratitude. “Te amo, muchas gracias por todo.”
“I love you, Bel. So much.”
Bel knows she could stare at the painting all day but is excited for Harry to see his gift.
“Your turn, amor.”
Harry happily takes his box covered in snowflakes. He tears into it. There are two gifts inside waiting for him. The first gift is a pastel yellow robe with mi amor stitched on the left side, right over his heart.
“I know you were upset about your purple robe having a tear.”
Harry clutches it close to his chest in appreciation, feeling the softness. “It’s wonderful. Thank you.” He reaches for the final item and shakes it. He hears a little clash and wonders what it could be. He opens the wooden box to find puzzle pieces sitting inside.
“It’s a puzzle.” He chuckles, surprised, but quickly begins to dump them on the bed and begins to solve it. Harry pauses as soon as he picks up the first piece and reads what it says.
I love how perfectly I fit in your arms.
Harry looks at Bel before picking up another.
Your smile never fails to make me happy.
“Bel,” he whispers in awe.
“Keep going.”
Harry's smile deepens with each new puzzle piece, and Bel sees how proudly his dimples shine and knows she could happily make it her home. Once Harry places the final piece, he’s in near tears. It’s a few of the reasons she loves him. She wished she could list them all, but she knew it would be a never-ending puzzle. The final shape is a heart. He’s quick to snap a photo of it, then brings Bel to sit in his lap, beginning to shower her in kisses, thanking her for each piece with a kiss.
“I got you a frame for it, too, if you want to display it, or you could keep it in the box.”
Harry shrugs, blinking away his tears. “I don’t know. I want to be able to see this every day, but I also loved finding where each piece fit while reading about how much you love me.”
“Whatever you want, mi amor.”
“All I want is you.”
She rolls her eyes. What a cheeseball.
“Feliz navidad, mi vida. Te amo.”
“Happy Christmas, Bel. I love you.”
Harry pressed his lips against Bel’s, tasting the sweet hot cocoa his mother made, savoring the taste until there was a loud yell of both their names.
“Are you lovebirds done? I want Y/N on my team for charades,” Gemma yells, knocking them out of their own world.
Harry grumbles about how Bel has to be his partner.
Yeah, it was the perfect Christmas.
