Unwanted Partner - DBH REWRITE Chapter One
[Detroit: Become Human MASTERLIST]
Next Chapter
Summary: Charlie wasn’t pleased much when she met her father’s new partner, an android sent by Cyberlife. The Lieutenant wasn’t very happy either but the two would have to put up with this plastic detective and work together through their investigation on the Deviants case.
Words: 4.7k
Warnings: Detroit: Become Human spoilers (specifically chapter 12 Waiting for Hank; & Chapter 13 On the Run - Scenes with Connor), bullying, sassy, sarcasm, insults, flashback, mention of car accident, mention of child’s death
November 6th, 2038
09:23 AM
Charlie slowly let her back slide against the curve of the tub and closed her eyes, taking a breath as her face sank into the clear water of her bath. Her knees sticking out, bubbles rose to the surface as she briefly exhaled under the water. There was no noise. Nothing. This eerie silence was quickly broken by gut-wrenching screams. The sound of the tires screeching on the asphalt and the truck violently sending the car rolling over the side of the road. She had screamed and after it went dark, had woken up in the hospital, having no idea of where she had ended up at the time, until a nurse came in and a few hours later, she was told of her little brother’s passing. It had taken her a while to understand that she had been out for several days. A medically induced coma, they had said, because she had suffered a concussion. She had been into a pretty bad car accident and was lucky to be alive, but her brother had not had that same luck as her and their father, who had been driving the car when the truck hit.
When her waterproof watch rang, she opened her eyes and straightened up taking a deep breath, wiping her face with the palm of her hand, looking at the time displayed on the square screen of her watch. She better hurry to get to work. She bent forward to open the bathtub drain and stood up. While the water circled above the drain and flowed down the pipe, she carefully stepped over the edge of the tub and wrapped herself in her towel, tucking the corner of it above her breasts so it would stay in place around her body as she walked to her bedroom of her two-story townhome in Emerald Springs, Detroit. She had moved in this nice and quiet neighbourhood of her sweet old hometown a year or so after graduating from the Police Academy top of her class and as a Valedictorian. Freshly out of the academy, she had stayed at her father’s new house for a while before finding her current place. She had been a Police Officer for a few years already and aimed to become a Detective and then a Lieutenant, like her father. She dried her body and threw the towel on a nearby chair before turning to her closet, opening the French double doors. She reached inside and grabbed some underwear, a pair of jeans, a plain hoodie and a blazer, the kind of clothes she wore in the chilly November weather and put them in a bag before looking for her Police uniform and putting it on. She wasn’t in upper management like her father yet, so she had to wear a uniform, as annoying as it was. It actually fitted her well and was comfortable so in the end, she didn’t mind much. She went to stand in front of her wall mirror and tied her blonde hair up in a bun.
Once all set, she walked downstairs to her living room to get her things, she put on her shoes and got out of the house, got in her car and drove off to the Detroit Central Police Station on the 3rd Avenue. It was a short ride, lasting for about fifteen minutes each time, except if there was more traffic than usual but this morning, she got there in time as it was pretty smooth on the road. She parked outside the station, left the bag with her civilian clothes inside and stepped inside the building. She needed a coffee to start the day off right, so she went straight to the open kitchen on the side of the main room. As she marched along the open space, she noticed an Android walking around as if it was looking for something. She frowned slightly but didn’t care and prioritized the task of getting herself a coffee. She had little to no care for those human-like machine and was fine never working with any in her police duties. She despised them as much as her father did. When she arrived in the kitchen area, she ignored Gavin leaning on the standing table, talking with police officer Tina Chen and she turned her back to him as she stood in front of the coffee machine and rested her hand on the counter, tapping the furniture with her fingertips as she watched the coffee fill the cupboard cup.
“Fuck, look at that… Our friend the plastic detective is back in town. Congratulations on last night, very impressive.” She picked up her filled coffee cup, put the lid on and glanced at Gavin sarcastically cheering for the very android that seemed to be looking for something in the station, a second prior. The android stared at her as she took a sip of her hot drink and the LED on its temple went yellow for a brief instant, like it was analyzing her before turning to Gavin.
“Hello, my name is Connor.”
“Never seen an android like you before… what model are you?”
“Look at his jacket, smartass.” She shot at the detective with a scoff as she walked past him and the android, now facing each other. There was a second of silence and he cleared his throat. She could hear their exchange in the background as she headed toward her desk.
“So, machines are gonna replace us all, is that it?” Because his interrogation was met by silence, he continued. “Hey, bring me a coffee, dipshit!” Gavin was clearly irritated as his tone of voice kept rising. “Get a move on! I gave you an order!”
“I’m sorry, but I only take orders from Lieutenant Anderson.” Charlie stopped in her tracks and turned around. So, he was the android assigned to her father as his partner in the Deviants case. Well, if it was his partner, it would be hers too since her father was her mentor and he had been ever since she did her on-the-job period training after being out of the Police Academy. Gavin scoffed, aggravated and he punched the Android in the stomach, or where a stomach should have been really. Connor froze for a second and brought a hand to where Gavin hit, and it fell to its knees, leaning forward on its other hand. Charlie frowned and took the lid off her coffee cup and walked towards the Detective.
“If Hank hadn’t got in the way yesterday, I would’ve fucked you up for disobeying a human.” He threatened before benting over to talk closer to Connor’s face. “Stay outta my way. ‘Cause next time, you won’t get off so easy.” He straightened up and as he was about to head out the kitchen, he ran into Charlie coming towards him and her coffee mug squirmed under her fingers and its hot liquid splattered Gavin and soaked his clothes, dripping onto his shoes as he let out a groan.
“Oh, shit. Sorry, Gavin. At least you’re kinda hot now.” She scoffed and turned around as he stared her down and she shrugged and went to pour herself another coffee. She smiled at Gavin, and he gritted his teeth, clenching his fist and jaw and he left, followed by the police officer he had been chilling with in the kitchen. Charlie sighed, shook her head and grabbing her coffee cup, she motioned for Connor to come along as she walked towards her workspace. It stood back up, straightening its tie and followed the officer. As she sat down and drank her coffee, she saw Connor sit on a chair next to her desk and her father’s and stay quiet for a second, so she watched it, thinking the android’s behavior was kind of weird and laughed it off, shoting up her eyebrows as she connected to the terminal on her desk. She went on to check her mailbox and saw Connor glance at her and she didn’t look back at, focused on what she was doing and kind of sighed when it opened its mouth.
“Do you know when your father will arrive?”
“Nope.” She retorted, checking the time in the bottom right corner of her screen’s terminal. It was already past 9AM. She sighed again and took a sip of her coffee. “If we’re lucky, he’s gonna come in before noon.”
“Depends on where he’s been the night before.” Officer Miller added with a smirk, and she laughed, even though, she was concerned for him. It wasn’t funny to her, but she didn’t want anyone to know. Nobody really knew how bad he was doing and for his own pride and self esteem, she was aware that he didn’t want everyone to know, and she respected that. In any case, she was there for him and would always be, no matter what. After a minute she took a look at the small bonzaï on her father’s desk, which was right across hers and pursed her lips before standing up. Connor followed her with its eyes as she went back to the kitchen area of the station. There, she filled a cup with some water and walked back to the desk before pouring the liquid in the plant’s pot. All while doing this, the android still sitting by the desks watched her until she sat back down, and it walked around her father’s office and observed the things on it. The LED on its temple turned yellow for a hot minute and she assumed Connor was inspecting the Lieutenant's workplace before the latter arrived, surely to get to know more of the man’s character while waiting.
“It’s good to see you again, Lieutenant.” Connor greeted and Charlie raised her head and looked at her father and contained a laugh when he sighed at the sight of the android.
“Uh, Jesus…”
“Hank! In my office!” Fowler walked out of his office which was in the middle of the precinct. It was a square room with completely glazed walls but soundproofed, so you really had to be shouting to be heard in the police station. The voice of the police captain softened as he motioned for Hank to come over. “Come too, Charlie.”
“Got it.” She mouthed, jumping off her seat and walking around her desk, walking after her father toward Fowler’s office. Connor came along and closed the door behind him while Hank and Charlie sat down in front of Fowler, and he just stood in the back.
“I’ve got ten new cases involving androids on my desk every day.” Fowler was turned to his computer terminal as he spoke up. “We’ve always had isolated incidents, old ladies losing their android maids and that kind of crap…” He turned to Hank and Charlie, frowning. He seemed pissed but was mainly looking at Hank. She was still paired to him to learn on the field. So, she was mainly there to listen. It was already an opportunity that Fowler gave her to let her work on homicides and stuff while only being a young officer. She hoped to get the chance to become a detective in the next year or so. “But now, we’re getting reports of assaults and even homicides, like that guy last night. This isn’t just Cyberlife’s problem anymore. It’s now a criminal investigation and we’ve gotta deal with it before the shit hits the fan. I want you to investigate these cases and see if there’s any link.”
“Why me?” Hank complained and Charlie glanced at him. “Why do I gotta be the one to deal with this shit? I am the least qualified cop in the country to handle this case! I know jack shit about androids, Jeffrey! I can barely change the settings on my own phone…”
“Everybody’s overloaded.” He retorted. “I think you’re perfectly qualified for this type of investigation. You have a young and brilliant officer by your side who certainly can change your fucking phone settings."
"Bullshit!" He swore, standing up. “The truth is nobody wants to investigate these fuckin’ androids and you left me holdin’ the bags!” He put his hands on his hips and walked around the room.
“CyberLife sent over this android to help with the investigation. It’s a state-of-the-art prototype. It’ll act as your partner.” That was something that was definitely not pleasing Hank and he had already made it clear. Charlie simply sighed as he started to yell.
“No fuckin’ way! I don’t need a partner, and certainly not this plastic prick!”
“Charlie, please go. Take it with you.” Fowler addressed in an exasperated sigh, and she stood up and walked over to the door. She dragged Connor along with her and they stepped into the precinct, she shut the door just when Fowler rose his voice at Hank, and they walked back to her office. They could hear their arguments, their voices muffled by the glass.
“Now that we’re gonna be partners—” Connor spoke up as it followed her, but she cut it off and turned around, a little annoyed at the latter.
“For now, you shut up. Thank you.” She nodded with a tight smile that faded as quickly as it appeared on her face, and she started walking again. She didn’t want to chit-chat with an android. Especially now. She had been aggravated by Gavin when she got at the station and now her father was getting a slap on the wrist and surely a reminder of the amount of previous disciplinary offenses already in his folder.
“So, you get to tell this thing off, but you spill your coffee on me when I do it?” Charlie stopped in her tracks once again when she heard Gavin’s voice. He was talking to her. She looked over to him. He had his legs stretched out, his shoes resting on his desk, slouching back in his chair, his phone in hand. She scoffed and went to sit at her desk.
“Got a new shirt already? Might have to accidentally spill some more hot liquid on you next time.” He frowned as she tried to make a fool of him and a smirk extended the corner of his lips and he let out a scoff, shaking his head, focusing back on his phone and whatever he was doing on it. After a minute, she looked up upon hearing Fowler’s office door slam and she watched her father walk to his office beside hers and sit down, looking pretty worked up, sulking. She already knew Connor would try to talk to him, but Hank was in no mood to be dealing with this walking plastic detective at the moment, so it better stay off his back. Connor stood behind the Lieutenant, and she already knew it was going to get heated when Hank would have had enough of it.
“I get the impression my presence causes you some inconvenience, Lieutenant. I’d like to know I’m very sorry about that.” Hank stayed quiet, as expected. “Now that we’re partners, it would be great to get to know each other better.” Another silence. Connor smiled awkwardly to her father but he wouldn’t even look at the android, his arms crossed and his gaze staring in the void. “In any case, I’d like you to know I’m very happy to be working with you. I’m sure we’ll make a great team.”
“Right.” Charlie mouthed, resting her chin on her hand. She exchanged an exasperated look with Gavin, who heard the android trying to chat with Hank, shoting up her eyebrows with a sigh. They weren’t friends, but they could at least agree a little on how ridiculous this all was.
“Is there a desk anywhere I could use?” It wondered, seeing that apparently no workplace was available for him. Charlie closed her eyes in a sigh, knowing that she was going to have to sacrifice her place because her father wasn’t going to move a finger so she pushed on her feet and had her chair rolled back against the glass wall behind her desk and she indicated the free space to Connor with a fake smile as she stretched out her legs and rested her feet on the edge of the furniture, crossing her arms. Like a child, when he was mad about something, he would stay quiet and sulk, so she had to be the ‘bigger person’ even though out of them both, she was the child, really. Connor looked over at her and tilted its head as he brought the chair it had sat on a moment earlier and settled in front of the computer terminal. “Thank you, Officer.”
“Yeah.” She mumbled as she pulled out her phone and clicked on her message app icon when seeing a new notification. She had some hope it would be her mother, whom she had not spoken to in months, but it was just an automated message reminding her of the amount of her telephone bills. She pursed her lips, hidind her disappointment and went looked at Connor as it addressed her father, still aiming to make conversation with the latter.
“Do you listen to Knight of the Black Death?” She frowned, confused as to why the android was being so specific in its question, as if it listened to such music. Hank was bent towards his computer terminal and had the same reaction. “I really like that music. It’s… full of energy…”
“You listen to Heavy Metal?” Hank asked doubtfully.
“Well, I don’t really listen to music, as such… but I’d like to.” Hank and Charlie exchanged a look, lightly shaking their head. It was just odd interactions after odd interactions with this thing.
“You have a dog, right?”
“How do you know that?”
“The dog hairs on your chair.” Charlie nodded to herself. It was really what he had been doing when he observed her father’s desk earlier. “I like dogs. What’s your dog’s name?”
“What’s it to you?” He turned his head to Connor, kind of on the defensive. After a second of silence, he looked back at his terminal, glancing over at the android. “Sumo, I call him Sumo.”
“If you have any files on deviants, I’d like to take a look at them…” Connor requested, leaning on its elbow on the desk. Hank looked at him while Charlie took her feet off the desk and came closer to Connor, pointing in front of him.
“You got a terminal right there. Knock yourself out.” From the corner of her eyes, she saw her father smirk at her telling the android off. Connor peeked at her and nodded kind of shyly. She then watched him put its hand on the virtual keyboard and it turned white, like the beige skin was gone. It scrolled through the case files and scanned everything that came in sight.
“243 files… The first dates back nine months…” Hank leaned on his office, listening to the android’s recap, resting his head on his fist. “It all started in Detroit… And quickly spread across the country…” Connor glanced at Charlie and then at Hank. “An AX400 is reported to have murdered a man last night… That could be a good starting point for our investigation.” Hank didn’t react so it stood up and walked around the desks and went behind the Lieutenant. The latter turned his back to the machine, trying to avoid any discussion.
“Uh, Jesus…”
“I know you don’t ask for this investigation, Lieutenant, but I’m sure you’re a professional.”
“Why don’t you go fuck yourself?” He spat and Charlie couldn’t help but let out a chuckle as she pushed Connor’s seat aside to get in front of her terminal.
“I’ve been assigned this mission, Lieutenant. I didn’t come here to wait until you feel like working. Think of the example you’re putting up for your—” Hank knew where it was going. He was already pissed off by the android simply speaking to him but now that it was trying to guilt-trip him didn’t go too well with him. He got on his feet, grabbing Connor by the collar of his jacket and pinned him to the glass wall behind his workspace. Charlie crossed her arms and watched, staring at Connor with a straight face.
“Listen, asshole. If it was up to me, I’d throw the lot of you in a dumpster and set a match to it. So, stop pissing me off… and don’t you talk about my daughter… or things are gonna get nasty.” He warned.
“Lieu- Lieutenant…” Officer Miller cautiously approached, and Hank let go off Connor. “Uh… sorry to disturb you. I have information on the AX400 that killed the guy last night. It’s been sighted in the Ravendale district.”
“I’m on it.” Hank replied, looking down on Connor in front of him. Charlie stood up and followed her father out of the precinct in silence. This android was really going to be a pain in their asses but they had to work alongside it.

10:25 AM
“All right, That’s all for now. Free to go.” Hank concluded after talking to the grocery store clerk outside the supermarket in front of which they were standing. They were in the Ravendale district, where the AX400 that committed a homicide was spotted, looking around in the rain pouring down on them. Charlie was wearing her cap to protect herself from getting her entire head wet.
“We’ve got officers sweeping the neighborhoos, in case anybody saw anything.” Ben said, approaching the Lieutenant.
“Okay. Well, let me know if they turn anything up.”
“What are we gonna do with that?” At the officer’s question, they all looked at Connor, standing still next to the car.
“I’ve no idea…” Hank motioned for Charlie to came along as he walked towards the android. The latter noticed their presence and looked at them.
“It took the first bus that came along… and stayed at the end of the line. Its decision wasn’t planned, it was driven by fear.”
“Androids don’t feel fear.” Hank retorted, letting out a chuckle.
“Deviants do. They get overwhelmed by their emotions and make irrational decisions.”
“Ah well, that still doesn’t tell us where it went.”
“If they really were scared and didn’t have a plan, they probably aren’t too far.”
“That is exactly what I was thinking, officer.” He stated to Charlie, and she gave him a tight smile. She was confused as to why she didn’t hate him as much as she thought she did at first. Charlie crossed her arms over her zipped-up uniform jacket and stepped closer to the android, thinking for a second.
“They couldn’t go to the motel. ‘T’was too risky. But there isn’t much places to stay hidden nearby, except…” Her eyes rose to the abandoned home right across the street from them. She started connecting the dots and thought that the android probably went to hide there. She motioned for Connor to follow her as she crossed the road, looking right and left for any car coming her way. It followed her as she approached the fence to a lone unused car rotting away. She pushed the door and looked around. “They didn’t steal wire cutters, so they must have found a way in through there.”
“There’s blue blood here, on this fence. I know another android is here.” Charlie turned to Connor. He was crouched near a fence separating them from this uninhabited house Charlie hypothesized the deviant was hiding into.
“I don’t see anything.” She squatted next to him, frowning.
“Blue blood evaporates after a few hours and becomes invisible to the naked eye.” He explained.
“But you can still see it, right?” He nodded and she let him pass through the fence where the deviant had cut an opening to get into the abandoned property. She followed him and they walked to the fron door of the house. She pulled her gun.
“Anybody home?” He asked, raising his voice. There was no answer. Connor opened the door and he silently looked at Charlie and she remained outside while he let the door opened ajar. When he spoke, she understood there was an android inside and he maybe had a chance to get something out of the latter if it didn’t freak out at the sight of a human police officer. She stood by the door and listened. “Don’t be afraid. I’m not gonna hurt you. I’m looking for an AX400. Have you seen it?”
“Ralph’s seen nobody…” It assured with a distorted robotic voice.
“Are there any other androids here?”
“Other androids? No… Ralph is alone…”
“There’s blue blood on the fence. I know another android was here.” Connor pressed.
“Ralph scratched himself coming through… That’s Ralph’s blood.” When it went silent, Charlie peeked inside through the opening of the door and observed Connor looking around the room, scanning everything in sight. A fire was lit in the fireplace and three plates were set on the table, but as Connor must have thought while looking at these, androids don’t need heat or food, so it made it even stranger. Connor then walked up the stairs and peeked upstairs, glancing back at Ralph.
“Is anyone upstairs?”
“No.” It declared nervously. “Nobody.” Connor walked back down in the living room.
“Connor, what the hell are you doin’ in there!” Hank yelled from the abandoned parking lot.
“Coming, Lieutenant!” He said as he went to look below the flight of stairs he had just climbed. As he was about to crouch down and take a look, the android grabbed him and pulled him away. Charlie made her entrance, her arms stretched out, gun pointing at the female android. She was holding the hand of a little girl and she looked distressed.
“Do not move! Raise your hands where I can see them.” Charlie ordered but in the blink of an eye, Ralph threw Connor at her. A shot rang out and the deviant and the girl cried out as they ran out of the house in a hurry to get away from there.
“Connor, Charlie, what’s going on?” Hank asked as he walked in the house. Charlie quickly helped up the android.
“It’s here! Call it in!” Hank ran back out of the house while Connor and Charlie went after the deviant and the little girl. They got back to the street where a police officer was watching. “Which way did it go?”
“That way! They’re heade for the train station!” He replied immediately, giving them a direction with his arm. They nodded and off they went, running like hell across the district. There was no time to waste. Running down the street, on the lookout, the two of them eventually managed to catch up with the deviant named Kara after it was spotted by the police half-way to the train station.
“They’re over there!” Another officer told them, pointing at the end of an alleyway. The deviant and the little girl were climbing a fence to get to the highway below. Connor and Charlie exchanged a look and spinted but when they ran into the fence, Kara and the girl were looking at them from the other side.
"Don’t shoot! We need it alive!” Connor turned to the officer aiming at the deviant through the fence but when he looked back, the android and the girl slid down the hill to the freeway and started to cross it.
“Oh fuck… that’s insane…” Hank exclaimed as he arrived, catching his breath after running after them. He wasn’t so young anymore and didn’t have the stamina his daughter had, let alone an android’s. Connor clang onto the fence, trying to climb it but Hank instinctively grabbed his jacket to prevent him from going.
“Hey! Where you goin’?”
“I can’t let them get away.” Connor was staring at the deviant and the girl, fixated on his goal to catch them.
“They won’t! They’ll never make it to the other side.” Hank leaned on his knees.
“I can’t take that chance.”
“Hey! You will get yourself killed.” The Lieutenant suddenly stood up, raising his voice when Connor jumped on his feet, wanting to climb up the fence and go after them but Hank caught him. “Do NOT go after ‘em. Connor, that’s an order!”
Charlie stared at Connor after he let go off the fence and simply watched the deviant cross the highway from afar. He had been programmed to accomplish the mission that he was given, and yet, he put Hank’s orders and concerns for his safety first. She didn’t think he would listen, but he did and unknowingly proved her wrong.

Connor x shy!reader
Summary: Connor has a crush on reader and would like to know them better, but he has a feeling reader doesn't like him because reader is always so... stiff around him. Eventually connor confronts this issue.
"Hank?"
"Yeah?" He grunted back. Busy with whatever work he had to review.
"Has y/n spoken to you about me lately?"
Hank looked up at connor, raising an eyebrow. "What?" He made his confusion clear in his voice "what do you mean?"
"Well..." Connors gaze fell over to you, mostly keeping his stiff posture, but his fingers were fiddling with the fabric of his pants."Whenever I come near y/n, their heart rate increases. Their stress levels highten whenever I'm around them. I was wondering if y/n has spoken to you about me. If I did someone wrong."
Hank glanced over at you, then back at connor, gears turning in his head. "No, they haven't." He muttered back, then realization set in. "Ohhh, I know what's going on here." He whispered. "What do you mean lutenint?" Connor replied. He fixed on Hank as he pushed back from his desk slightly. He gave one final glance at you, his tongue stabbing his cheek. "You said they get, what? Stressed around you? Heart rate... that sort of stuff." Connor nodded."Yes."
He finally looked back at connor, lounging in his chair again. "Why does it bother you so much?" Connors gaze shifted slightly, hands fidgiting with his clothes again. "I'm... not sure." His gaze fixed on you for a moment. A bit longer than he intended.
Something about you just... captured him. Your smile, your voice, your hair... everything about you was just... beautiful. You were kind to him when you didn't need to, even defended him when Gavin was being a little shit.
But as kind as you were to him, whenever he approached you, you would stress out. Heart rate escalating, breath patterns change... he worried he did someone wrong. Perhaps he scared you. He was aware many humans were unsettled by androids if not for their... superiority, but they can sometimes be uncanny. Had he startled you? Intimidated you? Did he do something wrong?
"I suppose... I worry I made a bad impression on them." He finally stated. He wasn't lying, but it wasn't the whole truth. Connor himself didn't know what the full truth was, but he felt it twist in his metallic core. Hank leaned back into his desk, keeping a suspicious eye on Connor. "Then ask them." He suggested, a bit to aggressively. The led on Connors head flickered, considering.
Would that work? Would a confrontation actually fix this or just make things more awkward?
"Ask them?" He repeated.
"Yah, ask! What's the worst that'll happen, Connor?" He insisted.
Connor couldn't explain it, but anxiety started to build in his stomach. It's a feeling he didn't often feel, but when he did, it confused him. In the past, he was so self-assured, full of purpose, and felt as if nothing could bring him harm, but now, ever sense deviancy, he was scared.
"What? You can chase killers with wreakless abandon, but you can't ask someone what they are feeling?" Hank chuckled light heartedly. Connor couldn't help but feel a small smile appear on his face. "I could say the same for you, lutenint." He jabbed back.
He finally looked back at you. You were on your computer, seemingly researching a case and taking notes. You were gorgeous.
I can do this
Connor stood up and made his way to your desk. You were located in a far corner with no other people sharing desk space near you. It was nice to have a private space to do your work.
You glanced up to see Connor nearing you, and that's when Connors sensors started to go off again. Increased heart rate.
"Good evening, y/n!" Connor greeted.
Irregular breathing detected.
"Hi, Connor!" You smiled back, giving a gentle wave."What brings you to my oh so humble corner of the office?" You set down your pincel, swallowing hard, which he noticed. "May I take a seat? I won't stay to long." Connor stated, jesturing to an unused desk across from you. "Oh, of corse!" You replied
He promptly slit out the chair and sat in one foul swoop, efficient even when sitting. "I'm sorry if I've disturbed your work y/n, I don't mean to intrude." He glanced at what you were working on. Seemingly, a case on petty theft. "No, not at all. Honestly, I need a break." You sighed, placing a hand on your forehead.
Connors fingers began to play with the fabric of his pants again. "I came to speak about an issue it appears you have. About me. I was simply wondering what it was and if there was anything I could do to resolve this issue." There was a moment of silence where your brain just stopped working. Thinking. You gave him a very puzzled face, which made him confused as well.
"Issue? What issue?" You asked, eyes skittering around his face. "Well," Connor started, now a bit tense. Did he miscalculate? "When ever I'm in your vicinity, your heart rate and breath irregularite, sweat usually increasing as well. My presence stresses you out, don't I?"
Your face suddenly flushes to a darker hue. "Oh." Is all you state. But his sensors are proving his point. Heart going wild. Chest tight with shallow breaths. "Are you alright, y/n?" Connor asked, leaning in slightly. He threw a glance at Hank, who was back to his work. He knew this was a bad idea.
You finally let out a deep breath. "I'm fine, Connor." You sigh, regaining some sense or composure. "It's just... it's complicated. No, I don't have an issue with you, if that's what you're concerned about. You've done nothing wrong." You shook your head gently, picking up the pencil again, needing something to do with your hands. Connors led began to flash again, trying to figure out what this meant. "So I don't make you feel intimidated?" He muttered.
"No, no, not really. Not like that." You reply, now fidgiting with the pencil, you're avoiding eye contact now. Connors led continued to blink. "I'm sorry, I don't understand."
He thought his extensive programming for human psychology would help him out, but somehow, he was left in the dark. "Why then, do you get so anxious when I'm around?"
You swallowed hard again, sweat starting to build. "It's dumb, Connor. Humans are... illogical, their minds go places they know are unrealistic. Thank you for caring, but I don't think you'd care if I told you."
Connor squinted slightly, a dozen questions racing through his head. What does that mean, "minds go places they shouldn't" what we're you thinking?
"But I do care." Was all he replied.
Your heart wrenched at that
you finally look at him. not a worried glance but actually look at him. his expression was soft and meaning. he looked so sincere. "oh, Connor..." you whisper. chest tightened, you hesitate for a moment before cautiously holding his hand. to flinch isn't the proper word but Connor reacted in a way that showed he wasn't expecting the sudden action.
should i tell him? you ask yourself.
clearly he cares. but... would he reciprocate? does he feel the same way or is he just... being nice.
you sigh. glancing around the room briefly. "I didn't realize how much you cared about this. about me." you mumble. Connors led stopped flickering for a moment, face hardening ever so slightly. "of course I do."
"alright. I'll tell you. I'm sorry for being so... uncooperative." you sigh, anxiety tightening. Connor simply nodded in response. "the reason I get so nervous around you is because I... like you. like, romantically." there's s moment of silence, his led flashing yellow for a moment. the sudden silence from the ever so quizitive detective is unsettling. you start to realize how square your shoulders are as you try to let out a chocking breath.
"say that again." he finally whispers back.
your gaze locks back on him, confusion twisted into your brows. "i like you." you reply.
Connors led finally stills. what ever eye contact he was making with you softens. "you do?" he replied softly. all you can do is nod. at that a small smile cracks on his face. you start to realize how ridged he was too because his posture relaxes slightly. "I like you too." he replied.
"really?"
"yes. I think so."
"think so?"
"no... no I know so." he finally stated.
you squeeze his hand in response "awesome. so... do you want to... date?" you can feel heat rushing to your cheeks. "id love to."

Hello there Detroit: Become Human fandom!
Thanks to the huge success of last year's Big Bang event, we are delighted to announce:
The 2024 Detroit: Become Human Reverse Big Bang
So what's a Reverse Big Bang?
In a normal Big Bang event, writers present their idea for a story, and artists are paired up with them to create works for that story. In a Reverse Big Bang, the artwork comes first, and we ask writers to create a story based upon the artwork. The match ups are handled anonymously by the moderator team to ensure a fair and even balance.
Where do I sign up?
Sign ups will be going live April 8th and the sign up sheet will be available both here, and in the Discord server!
The sign up deadline for artists will be the 29th April.
The sign up deadline for writers will be the 19th May.
We encourage anyone interested in participating to join the Discord server as this will allow you to get quicker answers to questions, be notified of announcements, and reminded of upcoming deadlines, as well as let you interact with your fellow artists and writers. We have a very dedicated cheerleading team who will encourage you along every step of the way should you want it, and it's a great way to find creative partners to work with, as well as make friends with people you may not have met before.
The Discord server can be joined here. Even if you're unsure about participating, you are welcome to come and say hello.
And finally, we'd like to thank everybody that took part to make last year's Big Bang such a success, including those of you still writing! This event wouldn't have been what it was without you.

Y/N’s pov:
I was awoken from my sleep, by my annoying alarm, as i rolled onto my other side, reaching out my arm and lazily turning it off, letting out a groan of frustration. Another day of work was waiting for me and i was already not having it. So much shit has been going on lately and it seems like everyone is expecting way too much from me.
I’m surprised Hank is pretty understanding when it comes to my situation, usually he’s a big jerk but we built a good and steady friendship, which lead us to being great work buddies if i’m being honest. He can still be a pain in the ass sometimes.
I sat up on my bed, my mind wandering off to think of one special person. Well, he’s not a person, Connor is more likely a machine, one of the androids to be exact. He has been assigned to work with Hank but they don’t get along very well, i’m full of hope it’ll change any time soon though.
I felt a smile forming to my face, just thinking about him. Connor is probably one of the main reasons i still enjoy work, don’t get me wrong i actually learned to like my job, he just makes it a lot better. I couldn’t help but feel interested in him, he’s not just good looking but i started a liking in his personality too.
I reached a different type of motivation for this day and decided to get ready and have some breakfast. I didn’t notice how fast time was moving forward, so that’s when i rushed out of the house and grabbed some coffee on the way to my working place.
Arriving at the police department central station, i got out of my car, reaching the entrance. I walked in and took a sip of my still warm drink. I greeted my coworkers as friendly as i could be and finally took my seat across from Hank.
“Morning Y/N”, he spoke, gazing up at me from his computer. “Good morning Hank.”, i replied in a somewhat really nice tone, noticing he wasn’t in such a bad mood today. Kind of suspicious if you ask me.
“Oh good morning Y/N. It’s nice to see you again.”, i heard a familiar voice saying, seeing Connor back at Hanks side. “Good morning to you too Connor. It looks like you’re being positive, huh?”, i said, my eyes never leaving him. I’m not quite sure but i could bet i just heard Hank letting out a scoff.
“If Lieutenant Anderson hasn’t told you yet, we got some news for one of the deviants, it seems like he has been spottet somewhere and we’re about to investigate the location. I did a good job myself.”, Connor explained and earned an unamused glance from Hank, who wasn’t too happy about Connor’s own praise.
“Well, sounds great! You guys should inspect and move forward then. I probably got lots of work to finish here.”, i said, expressing the last sentence in a bored tone. “Actually, we want you to come with us on the mission today.”, Connor replied, trying to hide the fact, that his lips formed into a small smile.
“Yea. More like you. It was your idea Connor.”, Hank stated, letting out a huff. He was obviously exposing him there. “What? Uh, maybe i just don’t mind some help.”, he defended himself, blocking off any accusations, even though his face was slightly flushed. Androids could in fact blush, they’re designed so much like humans, it’s crazy.
And I myself couldn’t help but grin at the situation in front of me. “It’s alright guys, i’m glad to come with you. I rather be out from this place anyways.”, i stood up, waiting for them both to return the act, so we could go.
____________________________________________
On the ride to the spot, it was mostly quiet. Connor was the only one who began to talk a lot, explaining everything about the deviant he found out and it was honestly interesting, but i could see from the passenger seat that Hank was annoyed by hearing all of this again.
it didn’t take too long though and Hank finally parked the car. I took a look out of the window, seeing an old house, the color was already coming off and it seems like the people living there didn’t care much about it.
After my small inspection, i opened the door and stepped out of the vehicle. Hank was on his way to the front porch, as i heard another door close behind me. I turned my head, to find Connor right next to me. Was he waiting for me the whole time or why was he still sitting in there?
“The deviant is supposed to hide here. I just know an old couple is living there.”, he spoke up still looking forward, his gaze fixed on the house, before he decided to lock eyes with me. I almost forgot how beautiful they looked.
“Well, makes sense then, that no one took care of it.”, i responded, quickly turning my attention back to Hank, where i was about to walk off to anyway, but i was stopped when i felt a hand gently wrapped around my underarm. “I should mention, Y/N. You look very pretty today.”, Connor nervously smiled at me. I wasn’t even able to respond, cause he was gone in a second.
I don’t think i would’ve ever expected this. He couldn’t even keep the eye contact, was he that nervous? Little did i know, he was practicing how he was going to confront me about it the whole car ride. I like this side of him though.
I was so stuck in my mind, i didn’t even notice anything around me, till- “Y/N! Are you coming now!”, Hank screamed me out of my thoughts. I furrowed my eyebrows at him, realizing they’re both waiting for me. I jogged up to them, my eyes landing on Connor who was grinning from ear to ear.
“You need to-“, “Pay attention, yea yea. I literally just zoned out for a second, it’s not that deep Hank.”, i interrupted his sentence, cause i already knew what he was going to try to lecture me about again. He only sighed at me in response, as i slid past him to enter the house.
“And now? Where is everyone?”, i asked in confusion, us three standing in a completely empty, old fashioned furnished house. “Yea, if you would’ve paid attention earlier, you would’ve known by now.”, Hank responded in his usual sassy voice. “Oh come on Hank, just inform me, instead of going on with ur childish games”
“Nobody responded to our knocks, Y/N. They didn’t open the door, so Hank kicked it in.”, Connor replied instead, a soft expression on his face. I gave Hank a weirded out look, as he shrugged his shoulders. Who cares if he was even allowed to do any of this, i just quickly wanna get this over with.
“Okay, you know what? I will search everything down here. You two, go upstairs.”, Hank commands, already walking away from this scene. I spun around, taking a look at Connor, who watched Hank closely with narrowed eyes.
“Let’s get going, Connor.”, i said, preceding to get up the staircase. He followed shortly behind, as his voice could be heard really close to me. “Hank is pretty hotheaded. He’s somehow always mad at everyone.”, “He got a very short tempter. It’s like he’s always mad at the world.”, i replied.
Connor nodded his head, before i decided to enter one of the rooms. My hand had a tight grip on my gun, that my belt was holding, but it wasn’t needed, the room was just as empty as the rest of the house.
Connor scanned the entire room as he suddenly crouched down, reaching out his arm. I watched as his fingers touched the blue liquid on the floor as he took a taste of it. I’m used to him doing this but i still scrunch up my face every time. “The androids blood is still fresh, he must’ve been here just a few minutes ago.”, he said.
My eyes were wide, interested in what he had to say. “And maybe he saw the cop car and us approaching the house. He probably fled cause he was too afraid to face the situation.”, Connor added to it as i crossed my arms in front of my chest.
“Well, wouldn’t you do the same.”, i said with a slight smirk on my face, to which he was taken back. A nervous expression was painted all over his face once again, making my smile just grow wider. “I guess you’re right, Y/N.”, he replied, in a soft voice.
He had such a warm and welcoming look on his face as his eyes were fixed on me. You could say i was melting right on spot, trying not to show it too much. I could see his led on his face turning yellow for a moment, meaning he was just scanning me.
He quickly looked away though, now staring at the ground, which gave me the opportunity to silently watch him. He hasn’t said anything about what he has found out. Was I showing signs of anxiety? Most definitely.
“What’s wrong Connor? Are you nervous?”, i boldly asked, making him raise his head. “Nervous? Oh i was just-“, “You don’t have to lie to me, Connor.”, i chuckled, taking a step closer to him.
His cheeks were flushed and i could swear my heart was racing at this point. I’ve never had a guy being this cute, i also never had something going on with an android, nor have i ever felt anything for one. But with Connor it’s different.
And i wasn’t the only one who was all up in my mind, Connor seemed like his thoughts were overflowing. I may regret this forever now or my future me will be thankful i did this, when i decided to reach for his hand. My fingertips touched his skin as i grabbed his soft hand, my thumb slowly moving over the back of it.
His face was only turning into a deeper red tone and i wasn’t even able to read it. His eyes turned even softer if that’s possible and they were staring right into mine. My knees felt weak, but at least they could still hold my weight, right?
Connor on the other hand looked like he didn’t know what to do at all. I was in charge of the situation, which i myself couldn’t believe with a man like him. But it’s not like i didn’t enjoy any of this. Instead i moved closer to his body, till i could feel his breath, till our lips were only a few inches apart.
Soon to be, there was no space between us left anymore. Our lips finally touched and i was taken by surprise of how good his lips felt on mine. Connor’s lips moved smoothly against my own, my hand moving to the back of his head. I gently took a hold of his wrist, guiding his hand to my waist, placing it right there.
I didn’t know that androids could have such soft lips, due to my lack of experience with them. Connor probably hasn’t had any of them yet, but he’s even cuter this way. I never would’ve thought, that i would make the first move.
The kiss lasted for a good while, but someone just had to ruin it. “Hey guys, have you found-“, Hank rushed into the room, cutting off his own sentence when he saw the scene in front of him. We broke apart real fast as i spun my head around, facing the disappointed Hank.
“Hank we can explain-“, Connor tried to talk, but was now the one to be cut off. “Really?”, Hank said all bored, shaking his head. I could hear out the sarcasm though, he wasn’t mad at us for doing this. “And i thought this would never happen.”, he continued. Right, he was just mad it didn’t happen any sooner.

Unknown time – late evening
Twenty-four hours after their leap of face in the water in order to escape from the FBI and the U.S Army, Connor and Charlie found themselves seeking refuge with the people of Jericho and their leader, Markus along with his close circle, in an old, abandoned church of Detroit. Charlie had no knowledge of this place and in other circumstances, she might have found it beautiful even in the ruined state it was in but right now, there wasn’t much time for monuments contemplation. A heavy silence was hanging over their heads like some sword of Damocles and the tension made Charlie rather uncomfortable. She felt out of place, shivering from the cold. Her clothes hadn’t really dried yet and she could feel the wetness and coldness of the fabric on her skin and her socks in her boots. She didn’t really regret joining Connor on this mission, but she was kind of remorseful of her father whom she had left with no news, thinking about how worried sick he must be right now, not knowing what had happened to her. She felt bad for leaving him in the dark, but she didn’t really had time to take her phone with her and even if she had, it would have died after being submerged in such freezing water. Another not so funny thought was how bad she was going to be sick in the next days.
Connor had his arms crossed as he leaned in a corner of the church, Charlie sitting in the shadow of the chancel on which Markus had been sitting and reflecting for a while now. The deviants’ leader eventually stood up, with this grave and stern look on his face and he walked around the church, saying a word to some of the refugees present, talking to the female deviant with the little girl; the very same Connor and Charlie tried to catch a few days ago and he went to chat with the people in his close circle, the ones called North, Josh and Simon, as Charlie had heard on the boat that was Jericho, before it got raided and then blown up, left to sink and rot even more than it already was. After a few minutes, Markus stepped towards Connor and Charlie. The latter stood up slowly, staring at him, not really sure what he was gonna do to them, and to her, as she was a human being, one of the people that oppressed them so harshly. She really hoped he would show himself to be merciful towards her, and Connor and not just shoot them right on the spot.
“It’s my fault the humans managed to locate Jericho… I was stupid… I should’ve guessed they were using me. He was looking down at the ground in shame, upset. Markus listened silently, staring at him while Connor didn’t dare make eye contact at first but then, he straightened up and took a step towards him. Charlie didn’t move and watched them. “I’m sorry, Markus… I can understand if you decide not to trust me… but please, don’t hurt Charlie, if you’re to kill me here, just let her go…”
Markus glanced at Charlie for a second, “I won’t kill you. You’re one of us, now. Your place is with your people. She betrayed her own people by choosing to side with us. She can stay here, for now.” As he was about to walk away, Connor spoke up.
“There are thousands of androids at the Cyberife assembly plant. If we could wake them up, they might join us and shift the balance of power…” At Connor’s wild suggestion, Markus frowned slightly and came back towards him.
“You wanna infiltrate the CyberLifer Tower?” He shook his head, thinking about it. “Connor, that’s suicide…”
“They trust me, they’ll let me in. If anyone has a chance of infiltrating CyberLife, it’s me.” He assured confidently.
“If you go there, they will kill you.” Markus argued.
“There’s a high probability… but statistically speaking, there’s always a chance for unlikely events to take place…”
“Be careful…” He solemnly said, squeezing his shoulder in a friendly and supportive way before leaving him and Charlie and walking back on the chancel, facing the whole of the remaining Jericho population.
“I’ll come with you. I can say I’ve been sent with you since we’ve worked together on this investigation. I’m a human. They won’t kill me. They have no idea it was me on that boat… They probably think I was an android so…”
“It’s dangerous, Charlie…”
“Yeah, well, I’ve stuck with you so far… we can partner up a little while longer.” She shrugged and a soft smile rose on his face before Markus’ voice caught their attention, cutting their friendly exchange short as the latter gave his speech to the androids. What he was about to say was going to use would sceal the rest of the events yet to happen. Every single android here had stood up, listening carefully to his every words.
“Humans have decided to exterminate us… Our people are packed in camps right now, being destroyed… Time has come to make a choice, one that very well may determine the future of our people.” He paused for a second, looking around. “I know... I know you’re all angry. And I know you wanna fight back... But I assure you violence is not the answer here. We are gonna tell them peacefully that we want justice. If there’s any humanity in them, they will listen. And if not, others will take our place and continue this fight. Are you ready to follow me?”
“Markus! Markus! Markus!” The androids cheered, loudly chanting his name. Charlie realy felt like she was witnessing a piece of history unfold before her eyes and she realized how awfully close and similar all this deviants’ situation was to some dark times of humanity’s history. She found it hard to understand howher people had still not made the connection by now.

10:48 PM
While the protests led by Markus had started in Hart Plaza a couple hours after Connor and Charlie left the premises, the two had gotten cleaned up and formally dressed, he wore his android uniform while she wore her officer's one, ready to accomplish this last mission they had given themselves. Once again, Connor tried to talk Charlie out of it. He was already unsure that they were going to let him pass so he was even more concerned for her safety but as she said before, she felt like she had gone too far to leave him now. She wanted to see it through, with him. And at the same time, she couldn’t let herself be killed. She couldn’t do this to her father. She gulped as the driverless taxi they were in approached the tower’s gate. Many soldiers were posted there, drones flying above their heads. They glanced at each other as a soldier came up to Connor’s window. The latter rolled down and he adopted a machine-like behavior as he announced his model’s number and name. Charlie then declined her identity, showing her name on the front of her uniform jacket.
“We’re expected.” He added, staring ahead of him with a blank stare. The soldier stood there in silence probably scanning them to check their identities or something and he stepped away from the car. The window rolled back up and they were let in. Charlie let out a sigh of relief after almost completely holding her breath for the past minute. Passing the gate was a first step, and they successfully did it, hoping no one was waiting to arrest of kill them inside. When the car parked in front of the tower’s entrance, she adjusted her jacket and then her uniform’s cap and they stepped out of the vehicle and walked past two guards standing outside. The doors slid at their approach and three more soldiers were expecting them. Charlie kept a confident face, pretending she wasn’t at all impressed and worried this whole operation would fail which it would if she stopped acting like she knew what she was doing. Act confident and people will think you are that was what she was repeating to herself.
“Follow me. We’ll escort you.” One guard told them, and Charlie tried not to look at Connor, letting him speak, keeping a low profile and therefore, keeping the guards’ attention and suspicion off of her. As long as no one questioned her presence outloud, everything would be fine.
“Thanks… but we know where to go.”
“Maybe, but I have my orders.” He retorted as he turned his back to them, leading them across the entrance hall. Connor and Charlie silently followed him, glancing at each other from the corner of their eyes. For now, it was going quite as planned. No one had been shot. As they approached the door, a sot of magnetic field shone around them, and a robot voice announced their identities as they stepped through it. Something caught Charlie’s attention and she noticed a somewhat imperciptible red trail after Connor. He didn’t notice but neither did the other guards because no one did or said anything but there was no doubt it happened because Connor became a deviant. But no one other than them two was to know that piece of information. As they traversed the tower, Charlie looked up. The ceiling height was dizzying, and a huge and imposing humanoid statue stood in the center. The guard leading them through the place sometimes glanced at them as he walked, and they walked to an elevator. He let them enter and another agent entered the elevator.
“Agent 54. Level 31.” After getting validation, the elevator’s doors closed and it started going up but both Connor and Charlie turned their head to their right, looking at the list of floors on the wall. They weren’t to go to level 31. It wasn’t where all the androids were stored. They had to do go down, not up. Their destination was level -49, but they had to find a way to re route the elevator before they reached the upper floors. Charlie took a step back, standing in the back corner of the elevator. After a second, the red light of the camera turned off and Connor threw himself at the guard on their left, kicking agent 54. He grabbed his gun and turned to him, punching him before the other agent jumped at him, trying to get ahold of him but Connor freed struggled and freed himself from his grip, shooting him in the head. Charlie stared at his body crashing onto the floor while Connor eliminated the other guard and stood up. She watched him walk up to the control panel and he took agent 54’s voice and the elevator started going down. Whatever was on level 31 was nothing good for them and they surely avoided an awful fate for Connor. Charlie wouldn’t have been killed but she would have had much trouble for her involvement with the deviants and the fact that she used her job title to help a compromised android that was supposedly THE deviants’ hunter he was made to be. She had no desire to lose her job because of this but if so, she would bounce back. She was young, and qualified for a plethora of jobs.
But failing wasn’t the plan. The elevator stopped once they reached the lowest floor of the whole CyberLife Tower, and she didn’t hide her shock when she finally saw these thousands of androids that Connor told Markus about. There were so many of the same model all over the warehouse and they were standing in lines, so very still, it was quite baffling. Charlie looked around while Connor took a few steps, deactivating the skin on his hand and as he went to grab an android’s arm in order to wake them up, a familiar voice caught their attention and they saw Hank being pushed out of the androids’ crowd by another Connor. Charlie got instantly worried when she realized the RK800 was holding her father at gunpoint, and she stared at them.
“Easy fucking piece of shit!...” He swore and his gaze met Charlie’s for a second. For a brief instant when he didn’t think of the gun pointed at his head, he showed relief at seeing his daughter after two days.
“Step back, Connor!” The android ordered. “And I’ll spare him.”
“Sorry, Connor… This bastard’s your spittin’ image…” This comment let them think Hank had been tricked by the fake Connor into coming to the tower. Charlie stayed where she was, her gaze often shifting from Connor to the other RK800 and her father, and vice versa. She feared he would pull the trigger and she would witness her father get his head blown out, and the very thought of this was already making her sick to her stomach.
“Your friend’s life is in your hands. Now it’s time to decide what matters most! Him… or the revolution.”
“Don’t listen to him. Everything this fucker says is a lie!” Hank retorted, not letting fear show. Connor stared at them, still holding the android’s arm.
“I’m sorry, Hank! Charlie and you shouldn’t have got mixed up in all this!”
“Forget about me, do what you have to do!”
“I used to be just like you.” Connor then added, choosing to keep trying to talk the other Connor out of it so he would simply lower his gun and just stop, and Charli was glad that he wouldn’t let her father get sacrificed for this whole thing, also meaning she wouldn’t have to watch him get murdered in front of her eyes. Hank tried to give a reassuring look to his daughter but even he wasn’t reassured about the outcome and she coud feel it. She was anxiously praying he wouldn’t get harmed. “I thought nothing mattered except the mission… But then one day I understood. These humans showed me that I could be something else… That I could be someone!”
“Very moving, Connor… But I’m not a deviant. I’m a machine designed to accomplish a task, and that’s exactly what I am going to do!” He stated fiercely, tightening his grip on the gun when he suddenly shouted. “Enough talk! It’s time to decide who you really are. Are you gonna save your partner’s life? Or are you going to sacrifice him?”
“All right, all right! You win.” Connor eventually stepped away from the android he tried to convert, showing his hands to the RK800. When the other android went to aim its gun at Connor, Hank tried to get a hold of it but got pushed aside and fell to the ground. Charlie rushed at her father, helping him up while the two RK800 fought each other until Hank grabbed the gun lying on the floor and put a stop to their brawl, holding them at gunpoint. The two had gotten mixed up with each other in the altercations and because they had the exact same physical appearance, both Hank and Charlie were actively trying to fing which of them was their friend.
“Hold it!” The two Connors stood up slowly.
“Thanks, Hank. I don’t how I’d have managed without you...” One spoke and Charlie stared at him. She thought that it was a strange way for him to talk, while the other kept quiet. “Get rid of him, we have no time to lose.”
“It’s me, Hank!” The other said, raising his eyebrows. “I’m the real Connor.”
“One of you is my partner… the other is a sack of shit. Question is, who is who?” While they tried to sort it out, Charlie didn’t know what to think or where to look. As her gaze brushed over their jackets, she noticed a tiny difference in their serial numbers, but she was still not sure which of them was the actual Connor. It didn’t really help as she tried to remember what was the last number Connor said to the guard when they had arrived at the CyberLife Tower’s gate. She was frowning, and then came to the conclusion that it was definitely not -60 but as she wasn’t totally convinced about her theory, she stayed alert, watching them carefully.
“Why don’t you ask us something? Something only the real Connor would know.”
“Uh, where did we first meet?”
“Jimmy’s bar!” Connor -60 said instantly. “I checked four other bars before I found you. We went to the scene of a homicide. The victim’s name was Carlos Ortiz.”
“What’s my dog’s name?” Hank went on to ask the other Connor.
“Sumo. His name is Sumo.” There was something almost desperate in the tone of his voice and how he replied to the question asked. Charlie stepped towards him, staring at him while the other android assured, he knew it too. She started to think that if the fake Connor had uploaded their partner’s memory, he would of course remember everything just the same, so they really had to ask something specific hoping it would help them figure it out, but she was more and more sure that Connor -60 wasn’t their friend.
“My son, what’s his name?”
“His name was Cole.” Connor said calmly, with a soft voice, not taking his eyes off Hank as he responded. Charlie knew at the way he was answering that they had find their Connor, and therefore her theory regarding the serial number was right. “And he just turned six at the time of the accident… It wasn’t your fault, Lieutenant. A truck skidded on a sheet of ice and your car rolled over.” Charlie gulped silently, trying not to flinch as she had memories of the accident flashing before her eyes, with the deafening honk of the truck. “Charlie was severely injured so they put her in a medically induced coma but Cole needed emergency surgery, but no human was available to do it… So, an android had to take care of him… Cole didn’t make it. That’s why you hate androids. You think one of us is responsible for your son’s death… your brother’s.” He added, glancing at Charlie beside her father.
“Cole died because a human surgeon was too high on red ice to operate… He was the one that took my son from me. Him and this world, where the only way people can find comfort is with a fistful of powder…”
“I knew about your son too! I would have said the exact same thing.” Connor -60 declared urgently, still trying to trick them. Charlie gave it a death stare and slowly took the gun from her father’s hands, wanting to shoot it herself. He let her take it, silently watching her walk towards it as the android tried to speak its way out of it until she shot it in the head a second later and looked at his gaze going blank, the blue blood staining its head.
“I’ve learned a lot since I met you, Connor.” Hank spoke and Charlie raised her head, looking at him and Connor. “Maybe there’s something to this… Maybe you really are alive. Maybe you’ll be the ones to make the world a better place… Go ahead and do what you gotta do.”
While Connor walked around, converting a bunch of the androids in the storage warehouse, Charlie turned to her father, putting the gun down to free her hand as her father draws her into a hug, holding her tight in his arms. They had not seen each other for two days and she could feel in his embrace that she had been completely right to think he must have been worried sick about her having died or gotten hurt and not knowing it. That past week had been a hell of a time with everything that happened with the deviants. They thought it would be a simple investigation, having to partner up with something they hated but they ended up befriending it, considering him their friend and equal. She saw the deviants first hand when she was among the people of Jericho and even though Markus could have been angry and bitter and killed her for what her people did to his, he didn’t. It was a proof of humanity in itself already.
The thousands of deviants converted and freed from the CyberLife Tower by Connor could be seen marching in the city of Detroit on TV, filmed by the news channels seated in helicopters above the scene while President Warren delivered a speech about what was going on.
“At dawn today, November 11th, 2038, thousands of androids invaded the city of Detroit. According to our sources, they originated from CyberLife warehouses believed to have been infiltrated by deviants. Given their overwhelming numbers and the risk of civilian casualties, I have ordered the army to retreat. The evacuation of the city is underway at this very moment. In the coming hours, I will address the Senate to determine our response to this unprecedented situation. I know that public opinion has been moved by the deviants’ cause. Perhaps the time has come for us to consider the possibility that androids are a nes form of intelligent life. One thing is certain: the events in Detroit have changed the world forever. May God bless you and may God bless the United States of America.”
Neither Hank nor Charlie had evacuated the city. They weren’t going to and stayed at Hank’s house, watching the news. The world had indeed never seen such a thing happen with artificial intellligences waking up and things going this way but leaving aside the fact that it was androids, that kind of revolution and insurgence in the face of oppression had already happened. It wasn’t the first-time history had seen it, and certainly wouldn’t be the last. History had an awful tendency to repeat itself without learning from its mistakes, ever. The next day, very early in the morning, Hank and Charlie went to the closed fast food stand her father often came to. They stood there in the cold, looking down the empty street until they heard steps coming their way, crushing the snow carpeting the sidewalk. Connor walked towards them and the three of them smiled to each other, happy to meet again after the protests. Hank then drew the two of them into a hug and it really felt like such an emotional family reunion. Hank found somewhat of a substitute son in Connor, and Charlie, a brother. Little did they ever thought they would get this close to an android one day.

N.B: I wanted to write an alternate (more sci-fi) kinda ending but I’m too lazy so here is a little summary of what I had in mind. At some point, Charlie get mortally wounded, to the point that her human body is going into shut down AKA death lol so the only option they think of, and have, is transferring her mind and everything into an android that would take her likeness etc and voilà. One of my first drafts that I made a couple years ago was supposed to have this as its actual ending and it was called Becoming Android :)
