A Posada Halloween Monday
The Mexican printmaking satirist José Guadalupe Posada Aguilar (1852-1913) often used skulls (calaveras) and skeletons to make pointed critiques of the politics and society of his day. This of course makes his imagery perfect for Halloween! Posada’s work has been immensely influential throughout Latin America, from the work of artists such as Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and José Clemente Orozco to common cultural memes. La Calavera Catrina, for instance, the Elegant Skull representing the cultural elite, has become a standard icon of the Mexican Day of the Dead, which begins tomorrow.
The images shown here are from the anniversary portfolio José Guadalupe Posada, 50 aniversario de su muerte, published in Mexico City by Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno in 1963.

requested ONLY by @agnewbones, here is the full iwks cast as imagined by me <3 ill put all the ones i already talked ab up top and all the new ones under the cut just so they're all in one place !!
spencer: ethan cutkosky
tommy: dale whibley
shayne: owen joyner
damien: leo howard
alex: naleye junior dolmans
keith: aubrey joseph
chanse: jay lycurgou
jeremy: lucas hedges
patrick: owen teague
ify: khalid
brennan: ryan potter
tim: ty simpkins
amanda: for this current age and era of amanda (prequel notwithstanding - mayhaps ill do a different casting of that later on whos to say), i'll say bianca comparato. i'd believe she was a tired soccer coach mother of eleven who's gay for her opposing coach.
angela: not that she's had a big part in the fic (YET.......) but im gonna say gia mantegna. another actress who needs a comeback!! yes i watched unaccompanied minors. anyway she has those angela eyes.
rock: this was a close second for ify, but i just think he has a more youthful fun energy that's much closer to rock's specific vibe than ify's. he also gives the 'keeping ify in line' energy that rock most certainly needs. anyway rj cyler!!
marcus: xolo maridueña has been popping off recently and rightfully so. marcus is only a bit part but i think he can be everybody's baby the way god intended. he doesn't have The Eyebrows but we can get them there i know it
ian: this one is more about vibes than look and also it made me laugh. because who gives that sad, washed-up older brother vibe QUITE LIKE skyler gisondo. this casting is everything to me i think it's so funny.
aguilar: do you think we can get away with rico rodriguez in a serious-ish role. i mean it's a comedy role in a serious-ish show. i just think he has the range.
luke: as a fun little nod to the series that was the partial inspiration for iwks, a little bit part for mister kit connor.
peter: wyatt oleff has that swagless mess energy about him
duran: im gonna go diego josef who is also from 'somewhere inside your house'. literally cried over his character watching this terrible movie bc his acting was incredible. (he was also just the best character imo.) i also cry over duran regularly so this all makes sense to me !
josh: this one's so tough but i think im going one of my other spencer options which was griffin gluck. he just has that :) face josh has
andre: how long has it been since YOU'VE seen mighty med. devon leos. we're giving people comebacks bestie
greg: jack mulhern my beloved. now its just katies dream actors coming to hang out man
garrett: whos getting the honor.... THE PRESTIGE. wouldn't it be fucking funny if i said like jacob elordi or something. anyway cameron gellman looks appropriately sad
josh (mythical): HMMMM.... there's so many people who i think look like him but are JUST too old for this. i almost used him a couple different times in the original cast but im gonna go with rudy pankow. he's josh-shaped !
trevor: it's giving austin abrams. he just has that trevor silly lil guy vibe. it's just a bit part (for now :)) BUT i think he'd eat
zach: adrian greensmith is THE perfect vibe and you cannot change my mind

Aphrastura subantarctica Rozzi et al., 2022 (new species)
Tumblr media
(Individuals of Aphrastura subantarctica, from Rozzi et al., 2022)
Meaning of name: subantarctica = from the sub-Antarctic region
Suggested common name: Subantarctic rayadito
Age: Holocene (Meghalayan), extant
Where found: Diego Ramírez Archipelago, Magallanes, Chile
How much is known: Three collected specimens (an adult male, an immature male, and an immature female) are held at the Chilean National Museum of Natural History.
Notes: Ovenbirds are a diverse group of small birds from the American tropics, with over 300 recognized species. Among them, the rayaditos (genus Aphrastura) are a distinctive group with “thorn-like” tail feathers. The rayaditos that live on the Diego Ramírez Archipelago (the southernmost point of South America) have previously been assumed to represent a population of thorn-tailed rayadito (A. spinicauda), but a new study suggests that they should be considered a distinct species, A. subantarctica.
The authors of this study discovered that A. subantarctica differs from A. spinicauda in being heavier on average, with shorter tail feathers, longer feet, and a larger beak. Their genetic analyses also found no evidence that the two regularly interbreed. A. spinicauda usually nests in tree hollows, but the windy environment of the Diego Ramírez Archipelago lacks trees. Instead, A. subantarctica appears to nest primarily in holes in the ground, especially the abandoned burrows of seabirds.
A. subantarctica is found only on the Diego Ramírez Archipelago, underscoring the importance of conserving this unique habitat. Fortunately, these islands are currently devoid of invasive predators and are under the protection of the Diego Ramírez Islands-Drake Passage Marine Park.

Joaquin should have known from a young age that he would have a hard time settling down in one place for too long. His parents were only together long enough to have him and his younger sibling, before his mother ran off in the middle of the night. Dad was in and out as he pleased, which meant that Joaquin tried to do what he could to take care of him and his sibling. Mostly this meant setting up fights in high school and having classmates bet on the outcome - sure it got him in trouble but he was bringing in enough money to put food on the table.
As much as it had killed him, Joaquin left town as soon as he graduated high school. He knew that he needed to leave to be able to bring in money for his sibling. So without much warning he left for different cities all around the country, never staying for long, but splitting his pay checks to saving some for his own living and sending some to his younger sibling. Eventually he decided to go into boxing and was actually pretty good, good enough to be able to make some decent money from it. He recently moved to Colorado and is trying to get more serious in his boxing career.

Ex's/FWBs - Listen he's a bit of a hoe, let's have all the drama
I WILL add more to this just please come plot with me

“SHE'S SO PRETTY AND SHE'S SO SURE - MAYBE I'M MORE CLEVER THAN A GIRL LIKE HER”
INTRODUCING…
NAME: Reina Mariana Aguilar-Cabrera
GENDER & PREFERRED PRONOUNS: Cis woman (She/Her)
AGE: 28
BIRTHDAY: December 31, 1994
ZODIAC: Capricorn Sun, Virgo Rising, Leo Moon
SEXUALITY & ROMANCE: Bisexual / Biromantic
FACE CLAIM: Renata Notni
OCCUPATION: Art Curator for the Museo de Historia Natural de Valparaíso
HOMETOWN: San Diego, CA
CURRENT RESIDENCE: Santa Moneda, Chile
CHARACTER PLAYLIST: HERE.
UP NEXT: “WHITE HOUSES” BY VANESSA CARLTON
BIOGRAPHY:
Reina grew up in a home as a first generation American. Watching her parents struggle her whole life, Reina never really felt as though she missed out on anything and she was grateful for her parents' sacrifices for that very feeling. Besides the growing bills on the kitchen counter, the young girl never second-guessed the impromptu 'indoor camping' when the electric was shut off, or the slight obsession for spaghetti as every meal for months on end. Reina helped translate for her parents, and maybe that's where all the sense for responsibility came from. She was always confused to be older, and she never really minded that. She excelled in school, and even went on to be in honors courses; she took college courses early, as well. There was a nice gentleman who came into her life. Someone who told her that if she were to marry him, she wouldn't have to raise a finger ever again. Though the idea may have made her mother fall over in tears, the (at the time) 19 year old Reina said no. Even with her parents' pleas, she just couldn't sacrifice her freedom and love for a life of comfort. Reina came to Santa Moneda after her community college years (on a full-ride scholarship, mind you) and worked her ass off to become a curator under the best mentor. She doesn't know what life has in store for her, but she's so excited to figure all that out.
EXTRA-EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT HER!
Reina is confident, and that might make others confused. She isn't sure about who she is; seeing that her identity was always on the back burner to her successes in life. She knows how to carry herself in different situations, and most of the time she is stuck on the past. She just doesn't understand where all that childhood ignorance goes, but she is very dead-set on making her life worth it. She dreams of traveling, and she loves art the most out of life. Reina is very motherly as a friend, but isn't afraid to break loose and have fun. Reina is flighty when it comes to love; afraid of losing her sense of freedom, but when she does love you - she could go to war for you. Reina has a sharp tongue at times, especially when she's stressed. She loves coffee and old movies. Marvel holds a special place in her heart, especially Wonder Woman - seeing that it was the older TV series that helped aid her and her mother into learning English a little bit. Reina is an amazing cook but lacks in time management, honestly. She's just trying to figure herself out, and what she wants out of life - okay? okay.
PERSONALITY:
+ Confident, Empathetic, and Intelligent
- Impulsive, Lost, and Nostalgic

URUGUAY
Pablo Deluca
·
Tenerife.

Four Names Lightning McQueen Has Had, And One He Hasn’t | Oneshot
(or: I did not even know where to begin with this task for Lightning because he has so many names and I did want to flesh out his family backstory so I just wrote a self para instead)
Warnings: None
1. Montgomery Félipe Martinez
Marylou Martinez smiled wearily up at her husband. This wasn’t supposed to be something they had to think about right now, a name, but their son wasn’t supposed to be born for another week. In typical Martinez fashion, though, he had sped ahead of the expected pace.
“I like Montgomery. I think it sounds regal, you know?”
He chuckled. “Are we going to have to explain to him that he’s named after a bar?”
“Oh, come on, Carlos. It’s not just a bar.”
No, it wasn’t just a bar. It was the bar. It was the only bar. It was where a young Marylou Aguilar had encountered a rookie Carlos “Speedy” Martinez and worked up the courage to break off from her group of giggling sorority sisters to ask for an interview for The Daily Bruin.
That interview never ran, but not because Speedy Martinez turned her down. They simply never could stay on topic.
“I thought we were going to name him after my father,” Carlos said, though from the look on his wife’s face, he knew this was already a losing battle.
“Oh, can it be his middle name?”
Carlos smiled. He did like Montgomery. He liked that it had a story, that his son could carry that story with him from now on. What could be more beautiful than the story of their family?
“Montgomery Félipe Martinez,” he relented.
“Montgomery Félipe Martinez.”
2. Monty Martinez
They did, eventually, tell Montgomery the story of his name. But he wasn’t really interested in listening.
“It’s too long. It’s an old man name,” the eleven-year-old grumbled, furiously punching the buttons on his new Game Boy. “It’s a stupid name.”
“Montgomery,” Marylou said in a warning tone, her eyes flashing in surprise. “Don’t say ‘stupid.’”
“Well, everyone at practice does,” he retorted, standing up and stomping off to his room.
“Montgomery!”
“It’s Monty!”
3. Monty McQueen
Nobody kept their real name in this business. It was nothing personal. It was nothing against his dad. It had nothing to do with family or history or heritage and everything to do with snappiness.
Chick Hicks was snappy. Hud Carr was snappy. And now, Monty McQueen, age eighteen, with a name borrowed from an actor-turned-racecar-driver who seemed the epitome of cool to Lightning, was entering his first-ever professional race with his brand new name.
He signed on the dotted line, grinning with all the confidence of an eighteen-year-old soon-to-be Rookie of the Year.
But of course Dad took it personally. “I just don’t get it, son. I know things have been different between us lately…”
“Whaddyamean?” Lightning said breezily, loading another box into his new car. New car, new name, new apartment, too. Look, he was gonna have to be close to the course. Ever since his dad had retired from the biz, he didn’t need to live nearby. But Lightning was just getting started.
Another thing that wasn’t personal.
Dad sighed. “Montgomery, I didn’t want to do this now, but-”
“Monty, Dad! Monty.” He laughed and shook his head. “Why can’t you ever get it right?”
“Sorry, sorry-” he said it heavily, adding another box to the back seat.
“We don’t have to do anything. We’re good, alright?” Monty flashed his soon-to-be signature smile. “Say it with me. Monty McQueen.”
Dad hesitated, but eventually, he relented.
“Monty McQueen.”
4. Lightning McQueen
“Aaaand there he goes, Rookie of the Year! He’s like lightning, folks! Here one minute, gone the next, blink and you’ll miss him— he’s done it! McQueen is your Grand Prix Champion!”
Sometimes, Lightning replays that speed to himself in his head, over and over and over. He knew right then that things would never be the same. This was bigger than Rookie of the Year. This was bigger than San Diego Junior Prix. This was California Grand Prix, and this was the beginning of Lightning.
He’d never really been satisfied with Monty. It was just slightly less dorky than Montgomery. So he asked Harv to start calling him that to media people, planting the seed of a nickname, and because Harv was the best, it worked.
And then a nickname wasn’t a nickname anymore. Lightning signed the papers, and he never forgot how great that felt, finally earning his own name.
“Congratulations, Lightning McQueen.”
5. ...?
Cruz never called him “Dad.”
Lightning, for some reason, had chosen this particular thing to ruminate on as he tried to go for a run, and he realized, from all the times they’d run into one another recently, he could not remember a single time she called him “Dad.” Or “Lightning.” Or “Monty.” Or… anything.
To be fair, Lightning never called himself “Dad,” either. He’d signed her Christmas card with “Your Old Man,” which at the time had seemed the perfect level of funny and lighthearted, but in reality, it maybe had more to do with the fact that Lightning felt hesitant about it, too. Dad. Kind of a big word.
But if he wasn’t “dad,” what was he, really? He was Lightning McQueen, that was for sure. And to some people he was still Monty. To his parents, he would probably only ever be Montgomery.
He had a lot of names by now. Maybe it was too late for a new one.
He ran faster.
