The original “Way of the Long Death” subclass was created way back in 2015 with the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, so I decided to give it a bit of a facelift before playing it in a campaign. I asked some friends (and my DM) for their input to try and make it similar to the recent Tasha's monk subclasses strength-wise, and I think it turned out really well so I thought I'd share it since I haven't really seen any other attempts to improve this particular subclass!

Posting day 3 on day 3. I have caught back up B-) This time for Janbrewery we have a fighter subclass. This is an underground fighter who brings some cheap tricks into the fight. The Subclass has a handful of strong “Tricks” that they can use to output high damage, debilitate the enemy, or control the battlefield. The fighter gains additional Tricks as they level, and can use them more frequently as well.
The subclass also has some magical tattoos to use to grant benefits that can be switched out, and the ability to drop a good old Darkness spell once a day.
Hope you all enjoy this one, martial classes are not my strongest brews XD

I've made a homebrew subclass for rogue for a modern setting dnd campaign that uses techno magic
But before I say anything about this subclass, I'm using this unearthed arcana article about modern magic and specifically the part about hacking tools. In this version of a modern setting, all rogues have proficiency in hacking tools and when they choose expertise, they can have expertise in one skill or hacking tools along with the default options (two expertise skills or one skill and thieves tools). Now, I'll go ahead and reveal the subclass
Hacker
Whether a hacker learned their skills in collage or learned with the help of the Internet, they are the masters of technology and how to use the technology to their advantage. They may be noble ethical hackers that help companies to find vulnerabilities in their systems, or they attack systems for more malicious gains. Or they just do this for fun because its sometime fun to say, "Um, actually…!"
Tech Savvy
At level 3, if you already don't have expertise in Hacking Tools, you now have expertise in Hacking Tools. Also at level 3 you have advantage in intelligence rolls when investigating a digital device. This also includes printers, smart refrigerators, screen projectors, thermostats, routers, switches (no not light switches unless they're smart switches), cameras, drones or any other embedded device. You also have the ability to create a server with the use of a computer whether it be a desktop computer or a laptop. This server cannot be turned off, either with the on/off spell or physically turned off, and must have constant internet connection to be functional. When the server is turned off, it loses all of the data it was storing.
Steganographer
at level 3 you can create hidden messages in digital files whether it be a document, an image or an audio file. You will need to communicate to the receiver what they need to look for. If a creature doesn't have the key to find the secret message, they will need to beat a DC 10 + your intelligence modifier in order to find the secret message. This DC increases at level 9 to 12, at level 13 to 14, and at level 17 to 16. Anyone using Hacking Tools to find the secret message gets advantage.
Exploit
At at 9th level you have the ability to create small malicious software that can attack any digital device. This can either be a worm, a fork bomb, a keylogger, a web crawler or any other form of simple spyware. At 9th level you also have the ability to use your Hacking Tools to sniff and spoof network traffic and the contents of the packets if they aren't encrypted. This can be used to eavesdrop on messages and passwords or as an impersonating someone in a man in the middle attack. This software also can be used on any form of embedded device so long as it isn't complicated for the device (because embedded systems have small brains). For example: if the device's only purpose is to record video, send that video data to a server on the cloud via the internet and do this action every time it detects motion and nothing else, your software must use the device's capabilities. In this example, you can make it that the video data it records can be sent to not only the owner's server but also to the server that you own (this includes something like google drive or an actual server you've built) but since it doesn't have a speaker when you can talk through it and it doesn't have the capabilities to get incoming data from somewhere, you can't make it play an audio file that contains the recorded screams of you winning big at league of legends to confuse a pedestrian.
Digital Necr0mancer
At 13th level you have the ability to create more malicious software such as trojans, root kits and ransomware. You also have the skill to do a Denial of Service attack or a Distributed Denial of Service attack. What's the difference? A standard DoS attack is just one guy while a DDoS its multiple people hogging the systems and the multiple "people" are just bots or zombies you gain with the use of trojans. During a long rest, you can create a trojan and send it out to the world. It exists for a week and during the time it does exist you can roll a d10 to determine the amount of zombies you have access to in order to do a DDoS attack. During the time the trojan exists you can use the zombies to either commit DDoS attacks or do other forms of cyber crime you wish. These zombies exist as digital entities. You can only control these zombies during a short rest or a long rest and one zombie can only do one action between long rests.
b2ggc2hpdA== (Oh Shit)
At 17th level you're so good at making dictionary attacks to crack passwords or any form of attack that cracks encryption that you now have advantage of the use of Hacking Tools to do this. In addition, you can add your intelligence modifier to increase the odds. When an ally is attempting to use Hacking Tools and they aren't proficient in them, you can assist them and they add their and your intelligence modifier plus your proficiency.
yeah uh this subclass is just hacker. no attacks. only utility. and is very reliant on the dm to be come up with different devices and whether or not its an embedded device. I mean technically you can DDoS a hospital or send ransomware to a gas pipeline and tbh the amount of utility this subclass you can get out of is when both the player and the dm knows enough about cyber security and tech things to be creative with it but that's why i made this. to make a hacker

and heres the circle of the swarm!! (previously circle of the reef) full stat block below the cut!
The Circle of the Swarm you get to command a swarm of creatures, they can fight for you, protect you, care for you, heal you and your party, its all good and magical Swarm’s Refuge When you choose this subclass at 2nd level, you gain the ability to conjure a swarm of small aquatic beasts that are allied with you and will protect you with their lives. They take up a 5 foot cube but can move through any space 1 inch wide. They have their own turn, and you decide what actions they take. Your swarm can carry up to 50 pounds of weight, manipulate objects (including ones that are being carried or worn). They have 35 feet of walking and climbing speed and deal 1d4 piercing damage + your Wisdom modifier, but at level 6 it increases to 2d4 damage, at level 10 it increases to 3d4, at level 14 it increases to 4d4, and at level 17 it increases to 5d4. They have a number of hit points equal to your Wisdom modifier x 5. You add your Wisdom modifier to any saving throws or skill checks they would make. You have a mental link with them, and can communicate psychically and give commands to your swarm. You can summon your swarm a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier per long rest. Bonus Cantrip At level 2, you learn the Infestation cantrip for free if you don’t already know it. It may show up as some aquatic creature when you cast it. Nurturing Hive At level 6, your swarm gains the ability to go out and forage for enough food for 3 whole meals per short rest, or 18 on a long rest. They can also heal you or an ally as a bonus action on their turn, if they are within 5 feet of you or them, for 1d6 + your Wisdom modifier. Colonial Cloak At 10th level you can take an action to use a charge of your Swarm’s Refuge to gain advantage on Stealth checks to make the Hide action. You can also create a shroud that provides 3/4 cover in the space the swarm occupies, or lightly obscures the area the swarm occupies. Your swarm can also switch between occupying a 5 foot cube and a 10 foot cube at will. You can only have one of these effects at a time, and they last for an hour or until you dismiss it at will. Evolving Swarm At level 14 your swarm grows stronger. You gain a flying speed of 80 feet, and double the amount of times that you can use Swarm’s Refuge. You and your swarm can also camouflage completely in natural environments for a use of your Swarm’s Refuge whenever you take the Hide action, becoming invisible.
again not super hyped on the final ability because its just like an escalation of current abilities and feels lazy, but its the best i could think of at the time

Be sure to confirm with your DM if Firearms even exist in the setting first! If not, then check if the DM is ok with substituting 'firearm' with a ranged weapon and if they are fine with reflavoring the class as an archer archetype.

Druid: Circle of Bones!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Much happier with this revised template and color.
But yes, DRUID CIRCLE OF BONES (PDF here).
Make your beast shape undead, call forth carrion to obey you as undead beast allies, and enjoy the many benefits of existing as a heretical druid balancing on the brink between life and death.
Happy Halloween, darklings...
new poll for the next brew soon.
(And don't forget, Grimdark & Dangerous is 50% off for the month of October and Psionics: Spellcasting & Specialties, my new book that revamps psionic abilities to fit 5e better, is available for purchase!)

Subclasseptember Day 18: Niche
The Politician - Homebrew Rogue Subclass
Why isn't September the 7th month of the year? Whoever designed this calendar ought to be stabbed.
"Niche" as a prompt was designed to encompass weirder subclass options, ones that probably wouldn't work in every campaign. This one, for instance, could do some absurd things in a subterfuge-heavy campaign, but might not fare so well in a dungeon crawl or a wilderness expedition. But I wouldn't be surprised to see people figure out ways to get creative with the prompt.

You see, if you enter into a pact with me, I'll grant you supreme power in exchange for your service. And you can in turn grant others supreme power in exchange for their service, and so on. It's definitely not a pyramid scheme. Don't look it up.

Pact of the Wolf (a DND 5e Homebrew inspired by Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and Dimension 20: Neverafter)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Death is the Great Equalizer. Though they may slip through the fingers of time, fairies, fiends, and celestials alike know to fear and respect Her, and even the undead can only substract themselves from Her grasp for so long.
Thus, many mortals come to see Death as the paramount example of persistence hunting in the wild: a wolf. This aspect is apparently not distasteful to Her, as the mortals who embrace inevitabilty and forge a pact with Her manifest Her powers through the form of a mighty wolf.
These mortals, nicknamed the Sheep-Clothed, are often only asked by Death not to interfere with the natural circle of life. However, while some of the powers She grants are geared towards dealing death and destroying undead, others have the sole purpose of defying Death Herself.
We can only speculate as to why Death would arm the Sheep-Clothed with the tools to fight Her. Perhaps, like the wolves She is compared to, She enjoys the chase. Perhaps She understands that a natural part of the circle of life is mortals fiercely defending their lives. Or perhaps She wants to teach us that even with the powers of Death at their sides, everyone eventually becomes Her subject.
Oath Spells
The Wolf lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following spells are added to the warlock spell list for you.
1st level: hunter's mark, inflict wounds
3rd: gentle repose, phantasmal force
5th: life transference, phantom steed
7th: greater invisibility, mordenkainen's faithful hound
9th: enervation, reincarnate
I Just Love The Smell Of Fear
At 1st level, your patron emboldens you at the familiar sight of someone being terrified to die. When you deal damage to an enemy who is frightened of you within 15 ft using a 1st level or higher spell, you can add your proficiency bonus to the damage.
Hasta La Muerte
At 6th level, you welcome the inevitability of Death, allowing you to partially let go of your life to act one last time. While you are at 0 hitpoints, Before making a death saving throw, you can cast a spell on a creature other than you on your turn. When you do so, you suffer one failed death save.
I Welcome Your Defiance
At 10th level, the power of the Great Equalizer lets you spread Her icy embrace to all your allies, weakening its coldness. When an ally within 30 ft of you fails a death save, you can use your reaction to transfer the failed save to another willing creature within 30 ft of you.
The willing creature remains conscious if they still have remaining hitpoints, but die instantly once they receive their third failed save, no matter their remaining hitpoints. You can only transfer one failed save per reaction.
Waiting At The End Of Every Story
At 14th level, you learn to salvage the raw potential of a life meeting a brutal, early end. When you kill a spellcasting creature, you gain a temporary spell slot of half the level of the spellcaster's highest unexpended spell slot (rounded up).
If you haven't used the temporary spell slot by the end of your next turn, its unstable magical power unravels, dealing you 1d8 necrotic damage per spell level. This damage cannot be reduced in any way.
Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you complete a long rest.
