For instance, a litter of six puppies will be individually tested on their reaction to a novel stimulus like an umbrella suddenly opening. Let’s say puppies one and two are not spooked in the slightest; they wag and investigate the umbrella. Puppies three and four spook first and then investigate. Puppies five and six spook but don’t come around to investigating by the end of the testing period. What have we learned about the temperaments of these puppies? The standard test interpretation would read that puppies one and two are very stable, puppies three and four are a bit spooky and puppies five and six are definitely spooky. The reality is that we haven’t learned anything about puppies one and two, puppies three and four have demonstrated reactivity but excellent bounce-back and puppies five and six have demonstrated reactivity and some lack of bounce-back. Puppies one and two haven’t been tested yet. Remember, the test is to determine the reaction of a dog to something that frightens it, not the puppy’s attitude about wet weather gear. Before it’s possible to see how well numbers one and two respond to a fearful stimulus, you first have to supply one. All that can be concluded from the test is that pups one and two aren’t afraid of umbrellas. We still don’t know how they will react when they encounter something that scares them. They may react as did three and four or they may be like five and six or worse. The jury is still out.

The dog developed seductive traits, specifically directed at humans. All signs of wolfish aggression were tempered; the dog no longer rolls back its whisker pads to show its teeth, for example. Its ears became soft, making it the only mammal in its genus to possess this discernible trait, which is associated with the gene for sociability. This new dog literally disguised itself as the happy imbecile with whom we now identify it, because this choice had become its best chance of success. The dog domesticated us rather than the other way around, even learning to divine the intention of humans by observing their sclerotics – the whites of their eyes...
Conversely, humans have been able to unburden themselves of a certain number of tasks, particularly those related to attention and vigilance. The human brain has become specialised, as has the dog’s, to the point where the cerebral areas of humans and dogs have undergone reciprocal changes; and everything indicates that we have one brain between us, that our brain is never truly complete unless it is paired with a dog’s.

What are some ways dogs demonstrate their loyalty?
Tumblr media
Dogs are known for their loyalty, and there are many ways they show their devotion to their owners. Here are some of the most common ways dogs demonstrate their loyalty : -
Following you everywhere. Dogs love to be around their owners, and they will often follow them from room to room. This is a sign that they feel a strong bond with you and want to be close to you.
Protecting you. Dogs are natural protectors, and they will bark or even bite to protect their owners from danger. They are also very good at sensing danger, and they will often alert their owners to potential threats.
Looking into your eyes. When a dog looks into your eyes, it is a sign of trust and affection. Dogs have a special gland in their eyes that produces a chemical called oxytocin, which is also released when humans hug or kiss. This chemical helps to create a feeling of bonding and attachment.
Wagging their tails. A wagging tail is a universal sign of happiness and excitement. When a dog wags its tail at you, it is a way of showing that it is happy to see you.
Bringing you things. Dogs often bring their owners objects as gifts, such as toys or sticks. This is a way of showing their love and affection, and it is also a way of trying to please you.
Sleeping with you. Dogs are pack animals, and they often sleep together as a way of bonding. If your dog sleeps with you, it is a sign that they feel a strong connection with you and that they trust you.
