Doom Patrol (1987)
Queer experiences, Jewish mysticism, extremely compelling characters, first trans superhero ever This is the volume with Grant Morrison and Rachel Pollack's time writing, and it's the most important for all of Doom Patrol's modern reading. The characters are all brought together by trauma and the run does a lot to deconstruct how that effects them and how loss really impacts you in every way. Doom Patrol vol 2 is also huge for DC queer rep, it's our first trans lady and cool lesbian Coagula, Rebis is an intersex person who banged Coagula and gave her powers, and Danny the Street, the nonbinary sentient street
Red Robin (2009)

I'm trying to get into comics, any recommendations?
I'm a DC girl so this list is gonna be very DC heavy, sorry.
DC
All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely: The book that made me a Superman fan. Beautiful, joyful, self-contained story.
The Flash by Mark Waid: Will make you a Flash fan. Some of the first comics I ever read come from this run. The original run is collected in omnibus format but Mark had a second, shorter run from around 98-2000 that wrapped up a lot of loose ends, and another one around 2008. Those are good too.
The New Teen Titans by Marv Wolfman and George Perez: This book probably saved DC, and it's a wonderful read.
Batman by Scott Snyder: One of the best modern Batman runs, although it suffers from the stink of the New 52 at times.
52 by Mark Waid, Greg Rucka, Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns, and Keith Giffen: Might need some onboarding for this one but it's a great read focusing on some of the second-string characters in the DCU and a triumph of collaborative storytelling. Its spinoff Booster Gold series is great too.
Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross: A surprisingly-accessible refutation of the 1990s trend towards darker and edgier superheroes, it's a must-read for the beautiful painted artwork alone.
Mister Miracle and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, both by Tom King: Tom King's had some big misses, especially Heroes in Crisis, for which as a Wally West fan I should want his blood. He makes up for it when he hits, though. These two titles are his best work.
Secret Six by Gail Simone: A great off-beat title revolving around a small group of supervillains trying to do good. Wish they'd bring this concept back tbh.
DC: The New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke: A love letter to the Silver Age of Comics with gorgeous artwork. Was later adapted into an animated film, which is also very good.
Dwayne McDuffie's original Milestone Comics (incl. Icon, Hardware, and Static), are all very good titles focusing specifically on Black heroes. McDuffie also had a great run on Justice League of America from 2007 to 2009.
Justice League International by Keith Giffen, J. M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire: A great and hilarious book that offers a much more lighthearted take on the DC Universe. There's a lot of focus on more obscure and minor characters which I always enjoy.
Doom Patrol by Grant Morrison and Rachel Pollock: If you've seen the TV show, it cribs heavily from this. A lovely series featuring a group of misfits trying to find their way in the world.
Jack Kirby's Fourth World: Brilliant, esoteric, at times close to incomprehensible. A must-read.
The Question by Dennis O'Neil: A wonderfully cerebral and philosophical series. Denny left reading recs in every issue! See also his run on Green Lantern/Green Arrow, which is a bit outdated but still electrifyingly political for its time, and his seminal run on the Batman titles.
Marvel
Uncanny X-Men by Chris Claremont: One of the greatest comic book runs of all time. Largely defined the X-Men for several generations basically until the Krakoa era. Most X-Men stories on the "greatest of all time" list come from this run.
Vision by Tom King: Hey, it's Tom King again! He wrote for Marvel too. This one's a really good character piece featuring a character who often doesn't get to stand on his own.
Daredevil by Mark Waid: The best Daredevil run, hands down.
The Amazing Spider-Man by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko: The original Spider-Man run is still my favorite. Some great Silver Age nonsense combined with great character drama is what put Marvel on the map, and it's on full display here.
Runaways by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona: A really good series that's mostly self-contained about a bunch of kids who run away from home after discovering that their parents are supervillains.
Fantastic Four by Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo: I sing Waid's praises a lot, but damn can he write. The best run for Marvel's First Family.
Others
Bone by Jeff Smith: An epic fantasy adventure starring three cartoon funny animal characters. My favorite comic of all time.
Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai: Another epic starring funny animals, this time set in the Edo period of Japan. Mostly episodic, so it's really easy to jump into.
Astro City by Kurt Buseik: Another love letter to the Silver Age, and to superheroes in general. Essential reading.

You have the best art ever!!:)
Who are some of your favorite people in DC n whose costumes are your favorites?
Thank you very much for the comment, you're very sweet :(
I will make a top 10 for each because I refuse to make decisions >:)
Favorite people in DC!!:
Cassandra Cain
Donna Troy
John Constantine
Batman
Superman (He makes me cry all the time)
Robotman (Doom Patrol in general)
Ted Kord
Booster Gold
Two-Face
The Penguin (Half-ironically. But I got into a whole controversy on tiktok because I said he looked hot in the 2009 cartoon. Cowards!!)
Favorite costumes!!:
1. Classic Nightshade is simple but bad-ass. She reminds me of Garnet with the glasses.
Tumblr media
2. Donna Troy's sparkly suit...I love it it's so pretty
Tumblr media
3. Raven's white suit and her classic design is one I hold very dearly. I miss it so much..
Tumblr media
4. Bruno Redondo's Nightwing suit with the finger stripes. Though I adore Discowing, I believe that it's a good adaptation that keeps it simple yet classic.
Tumblr media
5. Catwoman's gray suit for Batman/Catwoman is mwa! chef kiss.
Tumblr media
6. In all metal realness Jean Paul Valley's Batman is lovely. I feel that many suits these days have too many all-over-the-place details. This suit is a great example of a convoluted design with intention.
Tumblr media
7. This is possibly one of my favorite designs EVER. The reaper is just so !!!! No words, I can't even
Tumblr media
8. Damian's new Robin suit is probably one of the favorite updates to a suit I have seen. It's so refreshing and just fitting for his personality...love it
Tumblr media
9. Fire's all-green look is something I quite really adore. I love how they've kept the classic design and look...can you tell I love classic superhero constumes??
Tumblr media
10. No words

i’m sure someone has made this list before. but i’ve recently reread the robin (1993-2009) comics and realised how Batshit Crazy tim’s time as robin was. here’s a list of major events that happened during his tenure:
obeah man???: still not clear on exactly what happened here, but his parents are both poisoned, resulting in his mom’s death and his dad’s long-term coma.
knightfall/knightquest/knightsend: the iconic arc when bane breaks bruce’s back and azrael (derogatory) temporarily becomes batman then quickly goes off the rails and tries to kill tim, forcing him to go solo and work with huntress (hashtag girlboss) before bruce returns and handles azrael
contagion: the incurable Apocalypse Virus™ threatens to wipe out gotham city and tim naturally catches it and nearly dies before bruce returns with The Cure
the final night: a sun-eater tries to Eat The Sun. tim meets impulse! robin and spoiler defend gotham city on their own during the crisis! tim’s girlfriend’s crazy mafia uncle tries to kill him after finding them in bed together (not doing the sexy. but it looked like they were gonna do it.)
cataclysm: a massive earthquake levels half of gotham, throwing the city into crisis and causing some problems in tim’s personal life as his father relocates them to keystone briefly before tim’s misery convinces him to move them back to gotham
no man’s land (a personal favourite): gotham’s post-earthquake crisis worsens and the government decides that the best solution is to declare it no man’s land. shockingly, this causes Even More Problems. there’s a whole thing where tim’s dad realises tim snuck off into the city, and the news about it makes people sympathetic enough to gotham’s (cough a rich white family’s) plight that the government decides to actually help. cass becomes batgirl!
young justice/teen titans drama!: so much went on here. i don’t even know where to begin. the whole imperiex/our worlds at war apocalyptic crisis. tim quits young justice after the thing where the justice league discovers batman’s Super Paranoid Contingency Plans™ causes the team to distrust him. he returns to the team, which is disbanded after a team-up with the titans goes badly. the teen titans is formed. general fuckery involving tim’s civilian life!
unmasked: tim’s dad finds out he’s robin, confronts batman in the batcave with a gun and forces tim to quit. steph becomes robin and cuts off contact with tim. superboy tries to convince tim to come back to teen titans, but tim insists that he’s Totally Happy Just Being A Civilian, Kon. Really. He’s Less Stressed Now That He’s Not Dealing With Constant Crises! (lying)
war games: oh god. we all know this one. gang war! gotham in peril! steph dies! tim meets evil!future batman!tim who murdered the entire rogue gallery with the gun that killed bruce’s parents. tim seriously considers killing himself to prevent this future.
identity crisis: a Mysterious Villain begins targeting families of the justice league. because tim is not allowed to have anything remotely nice, his dad is murdered (by captain boomerang, which is frankly adding insult to injury). tim invents an uncle to avoid getting adopted by bruce (really, kid? really?). bruce finds out and helps him solidify the fake uncle's identity (bruce no)
robin: to kill a bird: jason todd returns all crazy and nearly kills tim at titans’ tower (dressed in a version of his robin costume) and signs his name in tim’s blood. theatre kid much, jason?
infinite crisis: c’mon dc, you’ve done like four world-ending crises in the last decade. chill your goddamn tits. the teen titans, doom patrol, and justice society of america team up to take down superboy prime. normal superboy dies due to the fight, despite tim’s desperate attempt to find a cure. also bludhaven got nuked and tim’s stepmother gets a traumatic brain injury and is permanently hospitalised. then bruce, tim, and dick go on vacation and tim accepts bruce’s offer to adopt him! yay!
one year later: cass is briefly evil! the league of assassins tries to recruit tim, who barely escapes with his life after turning them down. then he goes a little crazy with grief, tries to clone kon, and has a brief relationship with extreme violence before deciding to break it off.
the resurrection of ra’s al ghul: damian arrives in gotham! and tries to kill tim multiple times! ra’s tries to seduce tim to the Dark Side with the promise of resurrecting his parents! tim refuses! ra’s tries to force bruce to sacrifice either tim or damian to become his new host body! tim tries to sacrifice himself but is convinced by dick to Not Do That at the last minute!
batman r.i.p.: bruce dies, but not really! fun times!
battle for the cowl: i like to pretend this doesn’t exist, because it is Stupid As Fuck. jason nearly kills tim again, but damian (!) rescues him.
red robin: dick makes damian robin. the end!
but not really
and then of course the whole red robin series (which i love) is just like. tim is passively suicidal! tim loses an entire important organ while working with the loa! tim becomes ceo of wayne enterprises then blows up the loa and ra’s almost kills him! tim is nearly raped by one of ra’s’ daughters because ra’s really wants tim’s babies! this is not dealt with at all!!! love that for him

I want to read the dc comics, but I have no idea where to start. Which one do I read first?
I gave recs for what I started over here and they’re mainly what I started with so you can understand what I draw, but here are some more :) when I first started reading comics I went for shorter ones but as you read you get exposed to characters and you’re like “I wanna read more of them” and then it all spirals from there. I think it helped me get used to reading comic bullshit lol. I only started reading this year so there’s a lot I haven’t read out there.
1. Supersons 2016 (very cute and more lighthearted, three series, finished so it’s about 30 ish issues in total i think, Damian Wayne/Robin and Jonathan Kent/Superboy are the sons of Batman and Superman and they get into shenanigans and have a cute friendship. I really like these ones😊)
Tumblr media
2. Young Justice 1998 (older so dunno if you wanna start with it, but it’s fun and wacky and I love it, 55 issues plus some crossover/tie in issues so probably like 60 ish issues, features Tim drake/robin, superboy/Conner kent, impulse/Bart Allen, wonder girl/Cassandra sandsmark, greta Hayes/secret, arrowette/cissie king jones, plus more like empress/anita fite, slobo, and red tornado.)
Tumblr media
3. Graduation day (mini comic that is 2 or 3 issues about breaking up yj and the titans smh smh) then the core four (Tim, Bart, kon, cassie) join the teen titans
Teen titans 2003 (grittier and edgier than yj but has it’s nice character moments here n there, about 100 issues, but I’m not gonna lie if Conner isn’t in the issue I kinda zoned out or skimmed it ummm >_>)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Batman urban legends. ( ongoing, anthology of several stories and characters, good if you wanna meet a lot of Gotham based characters. This was like my first legit exposure to dc comics specifically so I’m putting it here)
Tumblr media
5. World’s Finest 2022 (ongoing, Um I think there’s 5 or 6 issues out rn. It’s revisiting Batman, Robin (Dick grayson), and Superman’s first years together and it’s reallyyyyy cooooooool. I love the vibes and art. Feels very authentically comic book-y. Dan mora is my favorite dc artist Honestly . Lots of others show up too like Supergirl and Doom Patrol 😊Actually this is Probably my fave out of the new comics)
Tumblr media
6. Batgirls 2022 (ongoing but there’s like 9 issues out I think??, features Stephanie Brown, Cassandra Cain, and Barbara Gordon, who have all held the mantle of batgirl. Also the art slaps.)
Tumblr media
7. Batgirl 2000 (70 issues, about Cassandra cain’s run as batgirl, I haven’t finished it but Its like a really lauded run and is well written so go read it)
Tumblr media
8. Batgirl 2009 (26 issues I think, this is about Stephanie brown’s run as batgirl, she is my beloved I love her so much and her jokes are so😖💜)
Tumblr media
9. Red Robin 2009 (26 issues I think?, runs parallel to Batgirl 2009 and Batman and Robin 2009, I put this one last bc I feel like it needs a Lot of context unlike the others where you can just jump into it but it is short and It was also one of my first comics so 🧍🏻‍♀️. Basically Tim drake had a solo run (Robin 1993) but it’s over 100 issues and I haven’t even read all of em bc there’s. So much. So if u wanna read more tim drake stuff I’d suggest looking up a reading list bc he debuts in the Detective Comics issues and then gets his own solo. Anywaysss so basically a lot of shit happened lots of friends n family died or “died” leaving Tim in a pretty bad place. Bruce is assumed dead, so Dick becomes Batman and makes Damian his Robin, and Tim takes up the Red Robin mantle. okay actually you can easily pick up the context when u read so nvm😗✌️)
Tumblr media
I was gonna put more but I’m on mobile and hit the photo limit ☹️ Kon and Bart have their solos, I started reading The New Teen Titans from the 80s, Damian has a recent robin run, and I’m planning on reading more supergirl/superfam comics and green lantern corps comics so yeaaaaah there’s a loooooot. Hopefully something here piqued your interest and I didn’t overwhelm you.

okay i read unstoppable doom patrol #1! this whole post will have spoilers.
i can’t deny that i liked it. there were multiple times where i turned to my partner and said out loud “oh this rules” or “i really liked this.” the voice for the team is really good, and i especially like the chief as a pragmatist focused on the safety of their team and people like them instead of just… being a straight forward carbon copy (presumably they’re an introject either way) of niles. as i said before it came out, i like anything that makes the doom patrol enemies of the state, and i really enjoyed an immediate conflict with batman over it.
my biggest concern is still steve’s presence. it sounds like it’s going to be limited, but i still am very wary of that. giffen patrol has been canon for over ten years. i’m getting a little tired of new doom patrol runs eventually devolving into glossing over what he did to rita. (and this isn’t a complex case, either. he’s always sucked. that didn’t suddenly happen in 2009, he has always been like this, that was just the first time canon properly acknowledged it as monstrous.)
overall though i think it was a good issue! the stuff with the brain and mallah was a little stupid but it’s doom patrol. it’s like that. he’ll be fine. oh, and i like beast girl’s powers, i think they help set her apart from the other beast-person the team has had. i’m excited to see how the series goes and i hope they can keep the momentum. and next time we’ll get the worm!

Somebody asked me about my favorite BL series and I wanted to make a list but then I thought it’d be more useful to make a list of series I recommend with LGTBIQ+ characters because in some cases they aren’t one of the main characters, or their love story/story happens just in one of the seasons or in individual episodes. If you want more details about any show or you just have any questions, you can always ask me in the chat where I’ll be happy to answer.
I had some doubts about including certain Asian series but I finally decided to add them if I have given them at least 7 out of 10 stars on MyDramaList because even if they could be improved, I think they still have some enjoyable elements and they are worth checking out.
The shows are ordered chronologically and by nationality. I know there are many more shows but I haven’t included anything I’ve not seen (at least 1 season or enough chapters to have an opinion) and obviously, I’ve omitted those with less than 7 stars.
Since these are all shows that I recommend, I decided to make a list of my favorite series at the end as well as I was asked. I tried to make it a top 20 but it was impossible.
I’ll edit this post when I have more series to add or if I’ve forgotten any.
It’s also on AO3.  EDIT: Updated on AO3 > 12.8.2022 / Posted; 31.7.2022

favorite color: bright pink (also any happy color)
last song: the last song i deliberately played was either “Almost Like Being in Love” by Nat King Cole or “September in the Rain” by Dinah Washington, but the last song that came up on shuffle was “Juliet” by LMNT
last movie: either around the world in 80 days (2004) or inception (2010)
currently watching: the last season of archer (2009)
other stuff i watched this year: lmao i actually have a lot of half baked reviews in my drafts but i never posted them because i’m almost always at my queue limit so here’s my chance to do a rapid fire round of reviews (based entirely on whether i enjoyed them)
how to marry a millionaire (1953) 👍 too many people forget what a comedic genius marilyn monroe was
Love Sarah (2020) 👍 🥲 a bakery, romance, grief and healing, intergenerational bonding, what more could you want
My man Godfrey (1936) 👎 boring
bringing up baby (1938) 👎 it has its moments, blueprint for disney channel show shenanigans
memories of the sword (2015) 👍 sooooo melodramatic
The Dig (2018) 👍 haunting
the misfits (2021) 👍 it is Not Good, but inexplicably charming
Free guy (2021) 👍 responsible for the resurgence of mariah carey in my playlist
Papillon (2017) 🤷🏻‍♀️ hard to get through but not bad
Chungking Express (1994) 👍 i’m not usually an atmospheric film type, but wow
The Lost City (2022) 👍 i had fun
The French dispatch (2021) 🤷🏻‍♀️ tried watching this multiple times, fell asleep each time but the fact that i tried multiple times means it goes on this list
most of the movies in the DCAMU (2013-2020) 👍 i saw a gif from Teen Titans: the Judas contract (2017) which led me to watch 11 of these 16 movies lmao curse you tumblr
Blue crush (2002) 👎
the Batman (2022) 👎
Lost in the stars (2022) 👍 the whole thing could’ve been avoided if (spoilers) were lesbian, but anyways it made me want to visit hainan and shanghai
Dumplings (2004) 👍 i mean i can’t eat dumplings anymore without gagging but
the burning sea (2021) 🤷🏻‍♀️ i remember laughing at the cheesiness (idk how accurately they translated from norwegian), but solid disaster movie
alive (2020) 👍 korean filmmakers really know zombies, but mix in quarantine era
Palm Springs (2020) 👍 went into this blind expecting white lotus lol (very much not white lotus)
The babysitter: killer queen (2020) 👍 i can only do horror if it’s campy horror
the menu (2022) 👎 well made movie, not for me
blockers (2018) 👍
joy ride (2023) 👍
Spider-Man: across the spider-verse (2023) 👍
king arthur: legend of the sword (2017) 👍 i don’t care i enjoyed its ridiculousness
Austenland (2013) 👍 it’s so bad!! i laughed, i cringed, i awww’ed
the tuxedo (2002) 🤷🏻‍♀️ better enjoyed in highlight clips
Matilda the musical (2022) 👎 if i hadn’t seen the danny devito version i might have enjoyed this
heathers the musical (2022) 👎 the off bway actors were better
Mayhem (2017) 👍 samara weaving and steven yeun! another movie apollo threw a covid dodgeball at
Charlie Chan at the wax museum (1940) 🤷🏻‍♀️ could’ve been good, hard to watch with the yellowface and racism
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) 👍
shows i dropped this year/didn’t finish: justified (2010), killing eve (2018) , gannibal (2022), beef (2023), doom patrol (2019)
currently reading: bel canto, but mainly just a lot of medical articles
currently working on: finding a new job because hellooooo 2 year itch
current obsession: ok so if you look at english language sources, most say that pregnant onions are toxic and therefore not edible. however, the medicinal value of pregnant onions is apparently not uncommon knowledge in other cultures (fuck yeah china and south africa). so a family friend gave us a few mature plants that make into soup and i picked off the little seedlings and have been tending to them. that led to spending more time tending to my other plants (i have a lot more loquat trees than i remember) and now i’m trying to air layer some stuff. TLDR; gardening
tagging anyone who wants to do this :)
