The most evil man

Today I read the first part of "The Adventure of Charles August Milverton" (thanks to Dr. Watson as always) and in a few lines you can already know the type of adversary he is.

There are many types of antagonists in all Holmes' stories, but those who are smart have a special place in the canon. Let's see some examples:

Irene Adler in "A Scandal in Bohemia" is the rival of Sherlock Holmes in that case. She left so strong impression in the detective that he calls her The Woman. She's smart, charming, beautiful and bit playful character, but above all she is not a villain. All that she does is to run away with her lover husband and start a new life. A smart woman with strong character that outsmarted Holmes.

In "The Adventure of the Dying Detective" we have Culverton Smith as opponent. He use a tropical disease to kill his nephew for money (IIRC) and tries to do the same with Holmes. He's evil because he kills his own family for what he wants and he has the willingness to do it again with whoever dares to search the truth.

Professor James Moriarty from "The Final Problem" is so far the most famous rival of Holmes, mathematics professor and criminal mastermind. Moriarty is essential in every adaptation of the canon and his intelligence is one of his higlights as a character. What makes Moriarty evil? The professor is the one who plans crimes for other people to execute in exchange of money. He doesn't seem the type of person who commits the crime for himself, he perfectly could be in his office, eating fish and chips while his minions do the dirty work. The evil in Moriarty is that he uses his brilliant mind for planning crimes and apparently he loves that.

We just have the first part of this story, but Charles August Milverton seems to be a completely different type of antagonist. He is smart but instead of making many different plans like Moriarty he uses blackmail. Just like Smith he wants money and is ready to take action himself and see the victim. He looks like a harmless person just like Adler but, contrary to all of these examples, Milverton enjoys to see his victims suffering. There's pleasure in watching the blackmailed person begging for a new deal, extra time or whatever they need to keep everything behind the rug. Charles August is the type of villain who wants to see the world on fire.

Inevitably first on my lists, Katie Forsythe's 'Undiscovered Country'. Watson POV. Watson is still living at Baker Street. Watson is very nosy. Watson finds the ivory box first. Oops. (This one is slightly harder going than the others below as someone actually gets very ill. If you've read KF before you can expect comparable angst. spacemutineer's 'The Acting Physician'. Holmes POV. Starts the same way as canon with Holmes trying to fool Watson, but it turns out he can't always have everything his own way... G-rated. https://archiveofourown.org/works/552256

Eddie and Chrissy hanging out at Lover's Lake after one of his shows at The Hideout, drinking little shots of vodka and laying on the shoreline together looking up at the stars:

"Do you have any like, weird talents?" Eddie asks, turning over to look at her and grinning, his veins buzzing pleasantly from the booze.

"Umm," Chrissy purses her lips thoughtfully. "I can do a pretty good impression of a movie character?"

"Oh yeah? Which one?"

She turns over onto her elbow and hooks her finger, hovering it near his nose. "E.T., phone home," she utters in a spot-on, gravelly impression of the extraterrestrial.

Eddie's resulting scream startles a huge flock of birds into the sky as he scrambles away from her. "What in the ever-loving HELL, Chrissy???"

She's still dying of laughter as he launches into a frenzied explanation of how deeply that movie terrified him when it came out several years ago, and how she must never do this again.

(She definitely does it again later that night - in bed. "CHRISSY, I AM LITERALLY INSIDE YOU RIGHT NOW." 😭)

All of Dying Detective is cringe-worthy on Holmes' part but the WORST PART is at the end where he actually forgot he'd told Watson to hide behind his bed wtf Watson is a greater man that I am cause I'd have decked him

I can only blame my sleep schedule recently (which has been appalling, due to a vicious cycle of 'play when I should be working! oh no now I have to work when I need to be sleeping' which is doing nobody any good, so now I have a sleep debt of about a week) for the thought 'ACTUALLY, Dying Detective is about internalised homophobia'

OK it's not ABOUT it but c'mon, Holmes has exactly one friend and the way they tell me empathy is supposed to work is you go 'well how would I feel if they did that?' but Holmes has to adjust back for: Yes but I'd be upset if he died because I'm madly in love with him. Surely he is not madly in love with me because he is Normal and therefore he would only be mildly put out.

(I am so happy to be back in a Victorian fandom where being ludicrously repressed all the time is normal and therefore we have an infinite number of "PLEASE JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER" fics.)
