Hope for the Worst
Chapter 25: Hope For the Worst
Summary:
So it's day 25 - thanks for coming along so far... Think of the worst case scenario and try to make it happen.
Chapter Text
“First, an announcement,” Abuela said as she glowered at Mirabel. “I’ve spoken to the Guzmáns about Mariano’s proposal to Isabela.” Abuela came up behind her then and Isabela cringed inside as she turned her head as Abuela cupped her chin to have her face her. Keep smiling…keep smiling…
“Dolores, do we have a date?” Abuela asked and Isa could hear the happy anticipation that made her want to cry all the while thinking…please say no…please say no…
“Tonight. He wants five babies.” Dolores said in a flat emotionless tone.
Isa felt a moment of terror…FIVE?…Isa felt the flowers sprout but she forced herself to replaster that fake smile on her face.
“Wonderful!” Abuela said excitedly, but Isa noted that her Abuela plucked out the white daisy, casting it aside as she said, “Such a fine young man,” She absently straightened Isabela’s posture and continued,” with our perfect Isabela will bring a new generation of magical blessings and make both of our families stronger.”
Isa held the pose just a little longer and turned to make sure Abuela had moved away, only to notice Camilo had shifted into Mariano. Being the jerk that he is, he was making kissing gestures at her. Strangling him with vines would probably not be the best response so she flipped her hand using her gift to stuff his mouth with flower petals. That at least shut him up.
“Okay. Our community is counting on us,” Abuela said then intoned, “La Familia Madrigal!”
Everyone responded in kind, and Isa was no exception. She got up from the table lost in her private hell when Mirabel, not paying attention and moving too quickly smacked right into her.
“Sorry,” Mirabel said moving past her.
“What is your problem?” Isa asked angrily but realized Mirabel likely did not hear her as she ran from the patio after Luisa shouting, “Hey! Luisa, hold up!”
Stupid Mirabel, she just gets to leave and I have to stay here and do dishes. She moved around the table taking half eaten plates of food and dumping them into a pail. Looks like the pigs are gonna have an awesome breakfast she thought. Dolores was watching her with sad eyes and though Isa wanted to find out what was bothering her, she and her prima had not been on good terms since Abuela announced her intention of having Isabela marry Mariano. She thought then of her half-forgotten promise to stay away from Mariano…but they were only ten at the time and Mariano was an even bigger dork than he was now. Isa stopped in her thoughts; she probably shouldn’t be thinking of her future husband that way.
Her husband…the thought made her cringe and she accidentally knocked over a juice glass. The contents flowed into Dolores’s lap, before Isa could apologize, her prima got up then and left the table. Isa righted the glass and took the armload of dishes to the kitchen.
Her mother was there packing up the last of the food she’d spent several hours prior to breakfast preparing. She looked up and cocked her head seeing Isa’s not happy expression. Isabela realized she was frowning and smiled, it was hard to hold on to though.
“You okay?” her mother asked covering one of her baskets.
Isabela could only muster a nod as she placed the dishes in the wash water. Her mother picked up an apron and came around the table to her. Isa was staring out the window when her mother turned her toward her and asked again as she put the apron over Isa head, “You okay, mi vida?”
In that moment Isa desperately wanted ask her if she had to do this. Tell her mother she did not want to get married, did not love Mariano, did not want five babies…but most of all she did not want to be shut out like Mirabel. But instead, she said, “I’m okay, Mamá. Just a little nervous about tonight.”
Her mother sighed and nodded, Isa was hoping she wouldn’t believe her, but she’d done too good of a job making her mother believe otherwise. Too good a job making Abuela think she wanted this to turn back now. She was trapped. She would always be trapped while Mirabel would be free. She wondered if it were possible to lose her Gift, then she could be free too.
“I can stay and help for a bit,” her mother said, but Isa shook her head.
“No, I’m fine, just preproposal jitters,” Isa said with a small nervous laugh. She was not sure why she kept repeating that lie. Her mother reached around and gathered the apron strings, tying them gently.
“Okay, Isabee, I’ll see you when I get home.” Her mother picked up the two baskets she prepared and left the kitchen.
Isa turned back toward the sink and started washing. Casita flipped a tile and she looked at it. The tile was one that she and Mirabel had made before her gift ceremony. The tiny plaque said Isabee loves Hum and there was a picture of a pair of bees on a daisy. A small smile crept onto her face. There was only one thing standing between her and potential oblivion. Abuela would want tonight to be perfect, but with Mira there, there was no chance of that happening. Since her sister was already acting even more chaotic than usual, she would just need to tell Mirabel not to say anything, not a sound. And on that hopeful thought Isa decided she could face the upcoming dinner, and hope for the worst.

✨Encantober #25✨ Generational Trauma
I struggled to get this displayed nicely on tumblr. And failed.
It's a very tall image - you might want to switch to landscape in between, if you're using a mobile device - tumblr shrinks very tall images, so I had to split it into seven parts and unfortunately I did not find a working solution to get rid of the gaps between each part of the image. booo.
So, as an alternative, I cross-posted this to ao3 where it can be viewed gap-less:

Generational Trauma: Encantober 25
Before
Mirabel doesn’t care about her birthday. At least, that’s what she tells herself when the family hosts a big party for Camilo. Half the town shows up and the other half sends gifts.
Camilo gets to request any food he’d like and Mamá makes it all. His birthday is not just a celebration of life, but his gift. He transforms for most of the night, acting out his stories and reveling in the laughter and attention.
Smiling, Mirabel reminds herself she doesn’t care about her birthday. When it comes a few months later, she almost believes it. The family doesn’t forget about her—Papá would never let that happen—but it’s not the same. The whole town isn’t invited, just her family and a few friends she asks.
Mamá offers to cook whatever she wants, but she picks one special dish. No reason to make her stay in the kitchen cooking all day. The town doesn’t send her presents and while the atmosphere is festive, it’s just…not the same. The lack of a special gift, of her failed ceremony, looms like a specter behind every smile.
Abuela’s attention chafes—most days she interacts little with Mirabel. A few comments at breakfast, perhaps, the occasional chore or question. She’s not treated with disdain, but again, the lack of gift forms a divide. Sole attention on her birthday is a duty, not an enjoyment.
When she goes back to her room, there’s a small pile of presents from a few people who stopped by. Mamá must have dropped them off. A card catches her eye and she picks it up. A cute cartoon rat wears a birthday hat on the front and inside it simply says feliz cumpleaños. There’s no signature, but the art is quirky. Mirabel sets it on her desk with a smile.
Who cares about birthdays, anyway?
After
Camilo’s birthday is smaller this year, at his request. He still has a lot of friends, but it’s not open to the whole town. When Mirabel asks him about it, he says he never really wanted everyone to come, but Abuela said it was good to share the celebration. Freed from the bonds of obligation, Camilo’s happiness is less forced. There's an authenticity to him that was missing before.
When Mirabel’s birthday comes, she doesn’t expect anything more than before. She’s surprised to be led to a chair in Casita’s courtyard where an impromptu walkway is constructed. Even more surprising is to find her family putting on a fashion show for her.
It’s a mix of designs on clothes she’s given them over the years and some that had to be put together by Antonio. Who else would pair a warm shade of yellow with a cool shade of pink?
Abuela even joins the rest of the family on the runway, wearing a shawl Mirabel embroidered for her years before.
Her eyes tear at the sight; it was not discarded as she feared.
She claps when the show is over and her smile feels too wide for her face. Tío Bruno pulls her to the side later that evening and passes her a card with a smile. A cartoon rat in a dress looks back, wearing an outfit she saw in the show.
“Tio, did you make this card?”
He nods, hands twisting together.
“Did you make the other cards with rats for my past birthdays?”
“I couldn’t be there,” he says with a shrug, “but I wanted to give you something anyway.”
Impulsively, Mirabel pulls him into a hug. “Thank you, tío. I saved them all over the years.”
Maybe birthdays were something to care about after all.

Encantober Day 3: Tragedy
I wrote this somewhat quickly based on a slew of thoughts I’ve been holding in for a while, so I’m sorry if certain parts aren’t as clear as they should be! Using a “read more” cut for now to make editing easier. @encantober-official
Back when I wrote this scene analysis, I didn’t realize I was going to be addressing the question of why Bruno didn’t just talk to anyone about the vision before he left. Going to another adult family member—if not his mamá, then Julieta, or Agustín, someone—seems like such an obvious thing to do, and because he didn’t do it, an obvious failure, perhaps.
But I feel like it actually makes sense within the story and family dynamics. One of the core issues the Madrigals struggle with is communication. The lack of communication. And the lack of listening, or of seeing (which is one of the themes of the film, along with generational trauma... more on that below). It’s a lesson they all need to learn.
I think I’ve used the word “tragedy”/“tragic” to describe the circumstances surrounding and leading up to Bruno’s decision to leave as well as his ten years of isolation in the walls. A word like that can be vague. What it feels like is a painful knot, a quagmire, a sense of being trapped. Here, I’m not trying to tackle the morality of Bruno’s actions, or judge them. But to really understand why things happened the way they did, and how it’s a part of the larger family pattern. Because it’s highly probable that it never even crossed Bruno’s mind to say anything because that’s just not what the family does. Or that it did cross his mind, and he dismissed it because, based on learned experience, that’s just not what the family does. They “Don’t Talk About Bruno”... Or Anything, Really. Especially not when it comes to the miracle or their Gifts or their role in the Encanto. They’re not allowed ...to express anything other than gratitude and humility toward their miracle.
Their communication issues run deep and across the generations. In another example, Isabela never communicates (learns to never communicate) anything about her own unhappiness. Luisa doesn’t open up about her stress. (Notably, these are things the protagonist learns about over the course of her own journey to see her family and herself, get everyone to acknowledge the past and present, and bring them all to an important crossroads... From “The Family Madrigal” to “All Of You,” it’s a pretty amazing journey.)
Moreover, several of the family members are shown to be “grinning and bearing it.” Starting with Alma, of course, who has to put on a strong face for her babies and her new, vulnerable community of refugees. Her own tragedy suppressed and unacknowledged, un-communicated (preverbal, as trauma so often is). Then there’s Pepa, Isabela and Luisa again, Dolores, Mirabel, the list goes on. Even if we don’t actually see their experiences onscreen, I’m positive we could list all the characters.
“I’m fine, totally fine.” / “The magic’s fine. Luisa’s fine.” / “Clear skies.”
So, maybe all this is a way to set up an understanding of Bruno’s actions when we finally meet him and see/hear about them via the flashback. It’s no wonder Bruno doesn’t communicate and instead goes it alone (”grinning and bearing it” for ten years, or for a lifetime, as he anticipated). Though, given the chronological timeline, is it possible to argue that Bruno’s decision actually helped set, or at least helped solidify, the precedence/pattern of non-communication and denial later practiced by the younger generation? Perhaps. But I also think that every example in the film, presented to us “out of order” (with Bruno’s history being shown to us in the middle of the story), is meant to strengthen the others, to demonstrate the theme of generational trauma.
Without making it sound like I think the characters are helpless, to escape or make a different choice, I’d say they are trapped in a cycle. But then again, maybe that’s what Encanto is saying, and showing: Trauma is Like That, catching you up in a whirlpool, rippling outwards, but with the possibility, the hope, of disrupting unhealthy patterns. Which Mirabel Does. And what we see in most of the movie isn’t quite the defiance of the cycle but the unhealthy patterns and the mistakes themselves, some of them much more harmful than others. Characters who are victims of trauma, and the cycle of trauma, as well as its perpetuators, until they finally start to break free of their cocoons.
. . .
This next part is kind of an aside, since I think I just wrapped up the main part of this post:
Speaking of being trapped... What of Bruno’s own thoughts and motivation on the matter of leaving? His own observation of the family dynamic, and his place in it? His agency? Wouldn’t Bruno, shouldn’t he, have had the ability, the will, to defy his mamá? Is he weak, cowardly, because he didn’t or couldn’t? There is so much to unpack here, which I’ll save for another post.
What I don’t think is that his was a choice made by a singularly troubled mind. It is, however, a concrete and extreme (dire) example of the dysfunction in the family’s system, the cracks in the walls, the layers of misunderstanding. I believe the filmmakers discussed on a podcast that one of Bruno’s roles was to put the fear in Mirabel that being ostracized from the family is something that could happen to her. Bruno, what happens to him (the black sheep, the identified patient, the “other”), is as symbolic as it is a real event in this family drama.
His going into the walls is a tragedy, too. I feel for him a lot, in the way he wants to stay close to his family, connected to them, even if being a part of them is a source of pain. It makes sense from a cultural perspective too. Familia es todo. How can he really and truly leave something of such deep and central value? This, too, makes sense to me, and is also as symbolic as it is a real event in the family drama.

Encatober 25 - Generational Trauma
Dolores, and Bruno/Jose (the same boy you've always known), T for ~naughty~ flirting, 661 words
*
“One more polvorosa?”
Dolores had learned early on that there were some things she should not be hearing. After she innocently repeated one such thing and Tía Julieta dropped an entire platter of empanadas, Tío Agustín flushed bright scarlet, and Papá started laughing, the adults started to be very careful about what they said when little (but powerful) ears could listen in. As she grew older she learned when to tune out of certain conversations between certain people, not just at home but in town as well.
“No thank you, I couldn’t possibly have another.”
The system had worked well for the past decade, sparing herself and the population embarrassment. It wasn’t perfect, however, and she found herself needing to compensate for new relationships as they cropped up. Figuring out where the line was for when a conversation was about to cross from harmless chatter to lascivious flirting was unique to each individual, and sometimes-
“Huh. That’s not what you said last night.”
-sometimes it was completely nonexistent because suddenly one of the very few people Dolores had relied on to avoid such topics completely, and who famously had zero filter, was very much not reliable any longer.
“…but it is what you said this morning.”
And of course he’d paired off with someone who…well, she wasn’t sure if he also had no filter, or was just unaccustomed to factoring her presence into every spoken word, but the result was the same.
“Pfft! Well, the good news is I can make it up to you.”
Dolores rolled her eyes and set her book down. Really, tuning it out would be the best short-term solution but if she wanted peace in the long run, a lesson had to be taught. She got to her feet and made her way across the patio.
“An act of contrition?”
As she passed through the kitchen she contemplated grabbing a wooden spoon with which to threaten violence - rumor had it Abuela resorted to that with her parents - but no. For a first offense, she’d let them off with a warning.
“Is that what we’re calling it now?”
“Both do tend to involve one being on thei-”
Thankfully, the rest of that was cut off. Unfortunately, it was replaced by kissing. She picked up speed as she crossed the courtyard, aimed straight for the sitting room.
“Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea max-”
“Hm!”
“AHH!”
Bruno rolled off José, and subsequently the sofa, knocking over the plate of polvorosas in the process and causing an explosion of powdered sugar. He flailed to his feet and coughed, taking a couple of steps back.
“Uh. Heh.” Bruno rubbed at his elbow and winced. “S-sorry, Lolo.”
José had pulled himself upright and was attempting to look his usual dignified self, however the effect was marred by the fact that he’d taken the brunt of the confectionary disaster. Still, he mustered an apologetic smile…which looked exactly like Maranio’s and thus only served to compound the intergenerational trauma this whole incident was inflicting.
“Yes, we’re very sorry. It won’t happen again.”
Dolores’ lips twitched at that, well aware that promise was futile, and shook her head before regarding Bruno, who’d become fascinated by a lamp off to the left. “Ok. Just…I’m very happy for you, tío, but please keep it down. Or take it upstairs. ”
José cleared his throat, and Bruno cringed before nodding. “Yep, of course, you got it, we're just gonna…" He trailed off and gestured at the crumbled cookies. "Take care of this, now."
"Thank you," Dolores said and, point made, turned and departed. Behind her the conversation covered mutual accusations of wrongdoing, withering snark, teasing, and finally laughter, all over the background noise of cleaning, and she smiled.
She was happy for them, truly, and she understood this was all very, very new, but the sooner they learned the house rules, the better for everyone. Especially since she was pretty sure Abuela could still be terrifying with a spoon.

Encantober day 25 🌈✨just 6 days left!
Thank you so much for reading and reblogging and all the kind things you’ve said 💖 it honestly helps so much you would not believe. So very grateful for the support from a beautiful fandom 🦋
Today’s prompt: Generational Trauma
Excerpt:
"What does it say?" Isabela whispered to Dolores, hands shaking a little as she held the meeting notes for her cousin.
It was something they'd learned to do before every town meeting, Dolores would read the notes for Isabela and she'd memorise them in advance, then pretend to read out the blurry page for Abuela.
"I think you should just wear your glasses." Dolores whispered, hearing her cousin's racing heart and panicked breath. "It's too much pressure."
Isabela shot Dolores a fierce look, flowers appearing in her hair as her heart beat faster. Only a handful of people knew Isabela's eyes were blurry like her papa and sister, and she was determined to keep it that way.
"I can't!" Isabela exclaimed, cheeks burning hot now and petals flying from her moving hands. "I need to be perfect! If there's ever a day for me to be perfect, this is it. Abuela needs me now. More than ever. I-" She stopped to catch her breath, gasping quickly as petals fluttered down around them.
Dolores embraced her cousin, squeezing tight like she'd learned to do when comforting Mama. Dolores gently shushed Isabela, stroking her sleek hair.
"We have called an emergency town meeting..." Dolores read in a quiet voice, head against Isabela's as she held her prima close.
"We have called an emergency town meeting." Isabela repeated breathlessly, eyes closed in stress as flowers continued to grow.
"Deep breaths." Dolores gently rubbed her back.
"Just read."
"To address the events of Mirabel's Gift Ceremony, and what they mean for the Encanto..."
"To address the events of Mirabel's Gift Ceremony," Isabela took a sharp breath. "And what they mean for the Encanto."

At some point I was having anxieties so I drew that! Then I improved it. Then to effectively fit today's prompt I changed some of the anxieties for them to be Mirabel's.

Encantober - Generational Trauma
Agustin whistled pleasantly to himself as strode across the lawn toward Casita’s front door, his arms piled high with fresh-cut wood for the family hearth. Just then, a lemur sprinted across his path and he tripped spectacularly over the animal, sending the lemur shrieking and the wood flying and his legs up and over his head in a riot of cartoonish mayhem. Mirabel, who’d been following behind a ways up the path, rushed forward in alarm to help him, only to stumble over a dropped log and land squarely across his stomach, filling the air with yelps of pain and confusion.
Camilo leaned back against Casita and crossed his arms, tilting his head toward his sister beside him, who was looking on with wincing horror as Agustin attempted to help his daughter up, only to somehow fall again himself.
“That’s generational trauma,” Camilo muttered with a wise nod. Dolores shook her head at him in disgust, but let out a satisfied hum when Casita lowered an eave to smack her brother upside the head.

#encantober
Encantober is an Encanto fandom event with themes for each day of the month of October (link to theme list in a copy/pasteable format Here), inspired by the concept of Inktober. Encantober is open to any and all content, including art, drabbles, one-shots, and more. Content can be shared via the #Encantober tag on tumblr and/or posted here as part of the AO3 collection HERE.
Rules:
Works must be a part of the Encanto (2021) fandom.
Works must adhere to one of the Encantober themes.
Series of Encantober works are welcome.
No incest.
QA:
Q: Can I link prompts together? Or multiple prompts into one work? A: Linking works together to create a story series is a wonderfully creative idea! However, combining multiple prompts into one work defeats the purpose of the daily prompt challenge. You don’t have to create a work for each day unless you want to. You can pick however many prompts and post the completed works on the specific days.
Q: Do I have to participate every day? A: You do not have to participate every day. This is meant to be fun, so please don’t stress yourself out.
Q: Why are milk and otters on this list? A: Pure self indulgence! Both are fandom jokes that have mutated over time. There was a milk day held on July 25th of this year we thought we should honor and there have been a few drabbles and art pieces made surrounding Bruno and otters (water rats). Fun Fact: Otters are native to Colombia!
Q: Why aren’t my posts being reblogged?
A: Either you posted it out of order (we will reblog late prompts, but not early ones!) or the admin team just missed it! We’re doing the best we can across timezones <3
Browse:
Use the links below to find the works for each prompt in our archive!

All My Stuff
Hola! I'm usedtobeguest123 (...because I ghosted around as guest123 on A03 before creating an account for myself 😁). Encanto-enamored book nerd. I love writing and am dabbling with art (newbie). Feel free to shoot me Encanto writing or art prompts--family fluff is my jam. I have tiny little humans I care for and sometimes go on long hiatuses, but I'm still around :)
Writing
Current fic: La Traes - This is the sequel to my first fic, Bruno from Before, but you could probably read it on its own. La Traes is the spanish name for the childhood game of tag, but it literally means "You carry it." This fic follows the (fluffy) relationship between Bruno, Mirabel, and Antonio, and is an experiment where I work through how trauma can rob us of childhood, and how we might possibly heal and get a little bit of it back.
Bruno from Before - My first fic! It takes place about 7 months after the movie. An exploration of Mirabel and Bruno's relationship post movie. Mirabel begins to learn more about Bruno from before the walls and is determined to help him find his way back.
Alma, After - I love Alma's character. This is a little dabble I wrote about her grief, and it ended up being a bit of a epilogue to Bruno from Before. Chronologically, it hits somewhere in the middle of La Traes.
Quiet - A collection of Encanto one-shots. They started out having the theme of "quiet," but it's really just a place for me to put my little snippets of writing :)
A Little Wasted Time - A one-shot where Mirabel and Camilo talk it out. It's a bit of a deleted scene from Bruno from Before.
How Are You Feeling, Hermano? - A one-shot I wrote after seeing this AMAZING art by @junosaccount. Bruno is sick and Julieta is there to do what she does best.
The Time You Give Me - Bruno - A super fun collab I did with the lovely @breannasfluff 💚 The pairing is a fun look into the mind of an introvert (Bruno) and an extrovert (Mirabel) who care about each other. This is the introvert side. Make sure to read Breanna's, too!
El Milagro de la Bebé - My fic for the @encantobigbang! Dolores is worried about her Mamá, and to help her she seeks out the most okayest man for the job - Tío Bruno. Pranks and family fluff ensue. Check out @lunaencantada's AMAZING art that goes with it!
You can find more of my little tumblr only one-shots under Encantober below.

Current Project: A Bruno-centric animatic that I started for @wdtajn. I swear I will finish it eventually! You can see my progress here, and here, and here, and here, too. EDIT: It's done!
