Miracles don't exist | 29: Sectumsempra
Tumblr media
Genre(s): Riddle!reader / Slytherin!reader / kinda slowburn / little happy moments Fandom(s): Harry Potter Pairing(s): Theodore Nott x Reader / Harry Potter x Riddle!reader Summary: Being the Dark Lord's daughter and raised under the strict supervision of the Malfoy's is no easy life. Especially if you start crushing on your father's arch-nemesis, Harry Potter. And that while being engaged to one of his follower’s sons. Warning(s): Bathroom scene / blood / talk about dying [Masterlist] [Mini masterlist] [Playlist]
Tumblr media
Time passes by easily with Theodore by your side. Before you know it, the temperature outside is slowly rising. The days are spent outside, on a blanket wearing Theo’s hoodie and his head on your lap.
Hermione has also been spending a lot more time with you. She and Ron are not on speaking terms since he has gotten into a relationship with a girl you're not bothering to learn her name. Because if Hermione dislikes her, by extension so do you. And Theodore. It's the golden rule of friendship.
Harry's been too occupied with whatever he is doing with Dumbledore and that potions book he's always carrying around. Hermione has been complaining about it, how dangerous it is and that he doesn't know if this Half-Blood Prince is even trustworthy.
And Draco... He has looked worse for wear. The Dark Lord has been hammering about the importance of Draco's mission and he's scared to fail. He's getting desperate.
You look over to the brown-haired boy next to you, your head resting on your hands. He's dutifully studying, quill scribbling away some notes for a test you're supposed to take tomorrow.
"You're starring", mumbles Theo without lifting his eyes off the paper.
You shuffle closer to him, keeping your eyes on him. "Am I not allowed to look at you?"
He gives you a playful look and bumps his knee against yours. He looks at the other side of the Great Hall, towards the Golden trio. "Have you heard what happened to Weasley?"
That makes you look over. Something must have happened because Hermione and Ron are sitting next to each other again while his girlfriend is nowhere in sight. "No?"
Theo pushes his parchment away, fully turning his attention towards you. "Apparently he got poisoned by Professor Slughorn. He and Potter were in the professor's office and got something to drink and Weasley almost died. He also broke up with Lavender in his sleep."
"I didn't know you were so into Hogwarts gossip", you say, eyebrows raised.
He crosses his arms over each other. "I don't. Blaise and Enzo however won't shut up at night and it's driving me mad." He runs his hands over his face and lets them rest in his hair.
You hum, resting your cheek against his arm. "Why don't you come hang out in my room, Teddy? My roommates bring their boyfriends over all the time."
He glances at you through his fingers. "I've tried. But the stairs only allow boys in the girl's dormitories if a girl accompanies them."
You feel your cheeks heat up. "You've tried?"
Theodore pulls you closer to him by your knees, draping them over his legs. He lays a hand on your back so you can sit comfortably. "Believe me, baby, I've tried many different times and methods. Even with a broom the castle somehow finds a way to stop me..."
He pecks your lips and you giggle, pushing his face away and looking around if someone's looking.
And as your eyes are scanning around you spot Katie Bell walking in with her friend, a nervous look on her face as people whisper and point at her. Multiple people go up to her, hugging her and whatnot.
“Holy shit, Teddy.” You nod towards the Gryffindor girl who was cursed a couple of weeks ago. “I didn’t know she was released from St Mungo’s.”
Theo whips his head around and looks at the girl. "I didn't even know she was sent to St Mungo's."
"Guess Blaise and Enzo don't know everything." You poke your tongue out with a smile. Theo rolls his eyes, doing the same.
Behind Theodore, you see Draco entering the Great Hall. He stops in his tracks as he sees Katie Bell talking with Harry. He looks scared and guilty. He turns around and hurries out of the Great Hall.
"I have to check up on Draco", you say hurriedly, pressing a kiss against Theo's cheek and haste after your cousin. You find him in a bathroom, his tie discarded on the floor as he rocks himself back and forth. Water is running as your eyes meet.
He turns around and begins to sob. You rush towards him and embrace him, letting him clutch your blouse as he cries.
"I know what you did, Malfoy. You cursed her, didn't you?"
The two of you turn around at the sudden sound of Harry's voice. He stands at the entrance of the toilets. You quickly push Draco behind you, your hand on your wand.
You want to say, "you don't know what you're talking about, Harry", but before you finish your sentence, Draco's throwing a spell over your shoulder at the bespectacled boy.
You let out a yelp as Harry bearly dodges the spell and Draco pulls you towards the stalls. You press yourself against the wall, your chest raising rapidly. Draco drops to his knees and aims at Harry, who sends one back.
Multiple toilets explode, flooding the room. Your shoes and socks are drenched and you can barely think straight. You run towards the exit. But through a mirror you see Harry approach your cousin, who's not aware Harry has rounded the stall to the other side.
In an act of pure desperation, you push Draco away from Harry's incoming hex and it hits you instead.
You fall to the ground, the feeling of invisible swords slashing your face and body has you rasping and gasping for air. Your back and hair are drenched with water as you lay limply on the ground.
A pair of hands press against the gushing wounds as your head rolls to the side, eyes drooping as you watch the foggy windows. Draco cries above you, begging you to stay awake while he yells for help.
You've always suspected that you would die young. That someone discovered who your father is and that they would take revenge. Or that you would die at the hands of Voldemort. But you never expected it to be on the drenched tiles of the boy's bathroom, Draco weeping and begging.
A dark blob appears above your dwindling field of vision. You search for Draco, to see if the curse hit him too. But as you turn your head, you see Harry Potter backing away from you, his blue eyes focused on your slowly dying body. You see him run out of the bathroom before you close your eyes for a final time, welcoming the darkness.
Tumblr media
You don't remember much between passing out in the puddle of your own blood to waking up in the Hospital Wing. Only two red-rimmed brown eyes, tucking you in.
When you finally wake, your body is sore. Your limbs ache and it hurts to breathe. You groan as you move, and immediately a pair of hands are helping you sit up, fluffing your pillow. Squeezing your eyes shut, you feel around for a familiar pair of hands.
"Teddy?" Your voice is hoarse and your throat feels like sandpaper. You cough and a glass of water gets brought up to your lips. Drinking much hurts and you push the glass away. "What happened?"
"Potter hit you with some curse that was meant for Draco. Luckily, Professor Snape could somewhat reverse the damage." He lifts up your blouse and a range of slashing scars adorn your stomach and presumably also your chest and arms. "You're pretty face is luckily fine."
Theodore comes into your view as he goes to sit on the hospital bed. A gasp leaves your lips as his eye sports a blooming bruise and his lip is split. He cradles your face and brings his forehead against yours. "You should see the other guy", he whispers before you have the chance to ask.
You grab his hand and he hisses. Theo's knuckles are busted up and bleeding again. He pulls his hand away from yours and wipes the blood on his trousers. "Don't you worry, okay? I've dealt with it and you're safe."
Looking away, your eyes travel across the infirmary. You and Theodore are the only ones, an oil lamp burns on the desk of the matron and gives the only source of light — outside of the sudden lighting that gives the large room an eerie look.
"Will you stay with me?", you whisper, glancing up at Theo. His eyes are focused on the windows displaying the storm clouds. You reach out and pull him towards you, into the small bed. The two of you get comfortable — Theo under you while your legs tangle together. Your face is in the crook of his neck and his arms are tightly wrapped around your body.
"Hermione came to visit just before dinner."
You turn your head upwards and raise your eyebrows.
"She was worried about you. And quite furious at Harry."
You say nothing, fiddling anxiously with the hospital covers. You don't know what to say, or how to feel. Only a heavy feeling fills your chest at the thought of Harry. You've never felt it before and it makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up straight.
Theodore studies you, how you cautiously look around, like you're in search of something. Something that will hurt you.
He sigh, pulling you closer to him — if that even was possible. He rests his head on top of yours, saying nothing but his message isn't lost. He tells you you're safe with him, and you know it. You feel it. And it relaxes you. Slightly.
Just as the two of you lull into sleep, the door of the infirmary gets blasted open. Theodore is immediately out of bed, his wand pointed towards the intruder.
Nothing would have prepared you for the utter shock of seeing Bellatrix Lestrange, Fenrir Grayback and a bunch of other Death Eaters standing in between the splinters of the blown-apart door.
"Hello, daughter."

march 20, 2024: enzo becomes aware of his father's return to palermo an the man's continued travels to tokyo. while they do not meet, messages are often carried from moses to enzo by marisol and two other members they've identified as trustworthy on his grandfather's team. gio and enzo remain under close watch, while marisol continues to have limited range within palermo and even the ability to leave the country when needed.
march 30, 2024: enzo is unexpectedly invited into a closed door meeting with his grandfather and someone introduced as orion leos. the man's face is oddly familiar and his expressed interest in getting to know more about enzo and develop his business sense, is one that enzo easily recognizes as lust. remaining defiant, he's warned that his disobedience will not end well for him and he's threatened that this time any attempt on his life will be successful.
april 8, 2024: upon returning from tokyo, marisol makes enzo aware that his father, moses jansen, has also arrived in palermo and has requested a meeting with the elder drago. what unfolds over the next week is increased restriction of enzo's movement and communication within the house. by the end of the week, he's being kept in the wine cellar and not allowed interaction with marisol, gio, or any team members not hand selected by his grandfather.
april 12, 2024: enzo is awakened early friday morning by the sounds of rapid gunfire on the property. the door of the cellar is opened and he emerges into the main area of the home to see guards injured and some dying from their wounds. he also sees a small brigade of men led by his father. his grandfather is bound, arms behind his back. enzo is offered the opportunity to take the killshot. he declines. and tells his father to consider it an early christmas present.
april 14, 2024: damage control and a multitude of meetings begin. by monday morning, april 15th, enzo is declared the drago family head. he makes his first declaration of war, severing the alliance that his grandfather had built with many families who were loyal and directly involved with the recent actions of chinese and russian mafia heads. including the attack on shiro. he's signed his own deeath sentance without little concern. he asks his father to remain with him.
april 15, 2024: enzo along with gio, marisol, his father moses, and a small accompaniment of security board a private jet back to tokyo.

I ship Bangel and Roey too, so of course I love your blog! I haven't watched TVD in awhile but would love to hear what you see as the main differences between Spike and Damon and, if you're up for it, the main differences between Angel and Stefan!
Are you the Rogan/Roey shipper, and you also ship Bangel? That's great! Thank you for loving my blog (even if you aren't the Friends anon haha) <3<3<3
Spike and Damon
I explained some of their differences here.
I honestly don't think they have much in common. Spike didn't have a soul until season 7, so he wasn't capable of understanding, feeling or expressing emotions in full before that. It doesn't even make sense to compare him to Damon. Spike couldn't grow because of his demon, whereas Damon was essentially a normal person. They also served different purposes in their respective shows. Morality was a big deal on BtVS, not so much on TVD.
Obviously, Spike and Damon were the "bad" vampires to Angel and Stefan's "good". They fell in love with the main character, Buffy/Elena, who was good and "pure", though the "good" vampires Angel/Stefan fell for them first, and had previously been madly in love with another "bad" vampire, Dru/Katherine. They were also fun, funny, smartasses, "honest", charming, dangerous, reliable yet unreliable, surprisingly protective and trustworthy at times, took pride in being bad, loved leather, alcohol, sex, violence, etc.
But those are all superficial similarities imo. Spike was a kiddie pool compared to Damon. He was a soulless vampire (for the most part), in a series that didn't clearly, or consistently, state what that meant or entailed, yet expressly limited the range of emotions and actions a soulless vampire was capable of. Damon/TVD didn't have that issue. Damon's vampiric nature didn't limit him one bit. His personality and past may have, but, as long as his emotions were "on", he could feel, understand, express any kind of emotion - at least, as much as the next guy; and his actions were always his own. Also, his relationships with himself and others were far more complex than Spike's. He only had a handful of meaningful relationships, but Damon had a much bigger social network, which included Elena, Stefan, Alaric, Bonnie, Liz, Katherine, Jeremy, Caroline, Enzo, and even Matt and Tyler. All those relationships were different and complex in their own way.
Damon was a well-rounded, interesting character, capable of growth, though, like any person, he often fought change and hid in what was familiar. His self-hatred always got in the way of his growth; not that he was a good person, but he was still capable of improving, and his behavior and mentality were easily explained without trying to piece together very complicated and contradictory lore (ie. the Buffyverse vampire lore). I would say humanity switch off Damon was like Spike, but that's not true at all, because evil Spike cared about Dru, Buffy, Dawn, Joyce, and emotionless Damon didn't care for anyone. I think Spike was a giant mess, what with the chip and becoming Buffy's lover and an honorary Scoobie, but Damon was very well-written imo.
Also, as far as what motivated them, for Spike it was a love of chaos and destruction (as with all soulless vampires), Buffy, and, later, a somewhat vague desire to help and "redeem" himself. If I were to compare ensouled Spike to Damon, they had in common the desire to impress the woman they loved and even to genuinely improve as people, but Damon hadn't been interested in redemption in the broader sense of the word like Spike had been on Angel. Damon was initially driven by a desire to be reunited with Katherine, but, after, it was his love for Elena, Stefan, and for the life he built in Mystic Falls - which included the friendships he made - that gave his life purpose and drove his actions. Those made him want to be a slightly better person, even despite himself, though his personality, temperament, and past got in the way of him becoming the person others wanted him to be, and who he had to be, to keep those he loved in his life.
Angel and Stefan
I wrote about them many times: x.
Stefan and Angel were just different! Personality wise, they were very different. Both may have been martyrs at times, especially in the beginning (Stelena ripped off Bangel quite a bit), but Stefan had a dry sense of humor, was often sarcastic and sassy, had an outgoing personality, was usually confident and cool, etc. whereas Angel was not quite as sassy and sarcastic, and was often goofy and awkward, avoided people, sometimes struggled to connect with them, and was overall more immature than Stefan (hot take!). Stefan generally knew what he was doing and wasn't as petty or vengeful as Angel could be. He had a much better handle on relationships and on understanding and expressing his emotions. Angel was often immature though he wasn't an immature person, and lived more in the extremes (I know Ripper Stefan existed, but that's a separate issue).
But Angel had a bigger purpose in life, a dream he was aspiring to; he was motivated by a desire to redeem himself and help others. While Angel and Stefan both hated their past, Stefan didn't really make it his mission to atone for past sins. He was compassionate, forgiving, strong, selfless, like Angel, but, in the end, he had looser morals and just wanted to take care of those he loved and live a peaceful life. Angel was a lot more restless and conflicted than Stefan, and had the noble goal, and responsibility, to help not only his loved ones - who he had to be willing to sacrifice for the greater good - but humanity at large. He was driven by ideals. Angel needed something bigger than himself to give purpose and order to his life, to motivate him and help him grow. Angel needed his life to have some sort of meaning and wanted to make a real impact in the world. Stefan only needed a few good people and to protect Mystic Falls.
It's actually very hard for me to describe Angel. Stefan was heroic, yes, but also flawed and built like a normal person. Angel was way more than just a person or character. He represented the unique and basic human struggle to find meaning in the world, in the absurd, and the fears, questions, hopes, dreams that characterize our existence. He was so much deeper than Stefan, Damon, or Spike. Like most AtS characters, he embodied the main themes of the show. He was all of us yet none of us. He was unlike any person, but we could all relate to him: to his love for humanity and his belief that we all deserve better, which warred with the knowledge that humanity is rotten and almost beyond saving; his sadness, helplessness, and confusion in the face of those facts; his need for life to have purpose, and how he fought for his to have a meaning that he could quantify and grasp, and that transcended life itself, while knowing there was no such meaning to be found; his loneliness, self-hatred, anxiety, and all his mistakes; his desire to be normal, to have love and a family.
Angel is too complete to put into words. He is everything (to me).
Anyway, this took a turn. Sorry! Thanks for the ask and for your support!

well,  good.  that  made  things  at  least  slightly  easier.
he  seemed  to  know  his  way  around  a  gun,  too—not  that  nancy  was  too  surprised  about  that,  given  his  military  background—which  was  more  than  helpful.  that  at  least  meant  that  they  were  in  capable  hands…if  he  was  trustworthy,  which  nancy  assumed  he  was,  given  the  amount  of  trust  hopper  and  joyce  seemed  to  put  in  him,  on  top  of  the  fact  that  he’d  helped  them  escape  russia  in  the  end.
“ you  don't  have  to  watch  your  back, ”  nancy  informed  him,  still  brandishing  her,  definitely  not  illegal,  sawed-off  shotgun.  “ we  can  look  out  for  each  other. ”

The première event of Un Asunto Privado was n Friday 19th in the Callao cinema of Madrid, just a week before the première, with the member of the cast and some other guests.
The interviews are mainly about a little description of the charactersand their roles, they mention the mix of several genres like mystery, comedy, action, drama, romance and adventures.
I have read the first critics and they are very positive, one of the best things of the show is Marina and Héctor's relationship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I read that the intro will be different in each one of the 8 episodes, with different drawings or pictures related with the events or clues of each episode, but with the same music.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apart from this I found a bit more info about the characters.
Set in Galicia in the 1940s, its main character is Marina, the daughter of a deceased police officer who educated her in a freedom that was inappropriate for women at the time. He gave wings to her fantasies, to her desire to be a police officer and made her her best student. The problem, with which the character of Aura Garrido deals throughout the season, is that she is a woman. That closes the doors of the police station. What is expected of her is that she behave like a calm young woman, get married, start a family and not give trouble. But, of course, she has other plans and conformity and submission are not among them. The character has a point of naivety. She's a free spirit who rebels from her comfortable position against the norms imposed by the time – a dictatorship about which fiction does not even tiptoe. Although she has a family who insists on getting her married, they consent to her 'eccentricities'. Money is also not a concern for her. This allows her to dedicate body and soul to fighting for a freedom that is denied her, impulsively and recklessly getting into all kinds of trouble in her efforts to solve a case that has shaken Galician society.
A serial killer is on the loose and she's determined to get ahead of some agents she considers, because they are, much worse than she is at her job. Thanks to her father's training, her ingenuity, her scientific interests and the invaluable help of Héctor, the family butler, Marina ridicules with her detective skills an entire police department led by her brother, recently promoted to commissioner.
Héctor (Jean Reno) is a discreet and helpful man whose sensitivity and audacity always place him at the key point of the investigation.
The couple formed by Aura Garrido and Jean Reno exudes chemistry. Some particular Sherlock and Watson where the comedy is very present and is one of the best of the series. It works with the two of them and even better when Pablo (Gorka Otxoa) enters the equation, the best official student (he was able to go to the academy) of Marina's father.
Beyond his contribution to comedy, the character of Otxoa, who responds to the archetype of a good, formal and trustworthy guy, introduces the three-way romantic component of the series, which could not be missing. Pablo and his handsome, mysterious and dangerous 'opponent', about which it is not convenient to say more so as not to anticipate events, give shape to the classic love triangle. The cast includes such interesting names as Ángela Molina, who plays Marina's mother; Tito Valverde, also a policeman and his father's former partner; and Pablo Molinero, who gives life to her brother. And with them, Alex García, Irene Montalá and Andrés Velencoso along with a long list of secondary characters.
Apart from this there's a curious story related with Ángela Molina and Jean Reno. The recent winner of the Goya of Honor in 2021 and Reno share an admiration for many years that also involves their respective families. “My kids watched the Reno movies 80 times. I knew them by heart”, declares Molina. "Even my grandson is named after the character he played in Le grand bleu," she adds, referring to Enzo Koa, son of Mateo Tirmarche, one of the three children the actress had with Hervé Tirmarche. For his part, Reno confesses that his father had all of Angela's father's records, the singer Antonio Molina, which means that "over time, parents are here."

REVIEW: Does It Hurt? H.D. Carlton
Tumblr media
MMC: Enzo Vittale
FMC: Sawyer Bennet
Full disclosure: I listened to it as a dual-narrated audiobook on Audible. Apologies for spelling errors. Narrated by Troy Durhan and Michelle Sparks -- both insanely talented and completed this audiobook experience for me.
🌶️🌶️🌶️
Sawyer is a fugitive from the United States who finds herself stranded on a lighthouse island with Italian shark researcher Enzo Vittale, with a creepy lighthouse keeper. While stranded on the island, Sawyer has no choice but to share her truths with Enzo since she can't run away, nor can she hide. The two of them have a complex relationship with their own trauma and each other, which they navigate while waiting for rescue.
----
Unlike many FMC's I've read, Sawyer is very edgy -- I love her. Granted, her edginess and dark sense of humor comes from a life of trauma and fear. I see a lot of myself in her. Neither of us are long-term friendship-types, value our privacy, don't dole out our life stories to just anyone, and are always on the move. She is elusive, clever, and keeps her walls up HIGH.
Correct me if I'm wrong. But I think H.D. Carlton has a knack for writing up some of the most f***ed up MMC's. Enzo is no exception. He's confusing to me. Domineering, controlling, threatening, Enzo is also protective and chivalrous to Sawyer? He goes from trying to drown her as a threat, to trying to drown her to heighten her org*sm, to putting his life at risk to save her? Don't get me wrong. I love a broody, mysterious, complex man. By the end of the book, Enzo seemed like a trustworthy protector. But he kept making off-hand comments about how only he is allowed to kill and/or torture her? Part of me is wondering if he's only saying that because he knows it hits some survivor part of Sawyer's brain that likely sexualizes her trauma.
Plot: I thought this was a creative plotline. Having seen The Lighthouse movie with Robert Pattinson recently, I can put a face to Sylvester and feel immersed in the lighthouse thriller theme. Carlton quite gracefully married the romance, eroticism, and thriller themes together.
Spice: Enzo and Sawyer 🥵 wow. I love a rough dom. His methods go beyond my zone of comfort for "rough" sex but I still love the psychological manipulation methods Enzo uses during the scenes. And that mouth of his? Filthy. Terrifying. Comforting. Troy Duran is my hot Italian daddy thanks to that voice of his. All things I love. Not the spiciest I've read. Nonetheless, I finished the audiobook wondering if I need to see a psychiatrist.

Better than Yesterday
Today wasn’t a 100% complete success, but it was better than yesterday. Finding the right gear is difficult for me these days. I realized I needed a list, my trustworthy fall back on how I used to get shit done. My list.
Wrote it. Then starting working on it.
Before I knew it, I was adding more to it. I got slightly sidetracked by a rather large German pretzel with some mustard sauce - so that was nice. I ended up adding more things to said list, but found ways to check them off.
Tomorrow I will atrack the highest priority thing which isn’t listed, then crack back into the list. I just need to focus and get the shit done. I’ve moved this needle off zero, but now it’s stuck at 15mph. Needs to be faster.
Had a nice follow chat about my mini-meltdown. Sadly, there isn’t a solution for my mood swings. Perhaps if I was working they wouldn’t be as drastic and noticeable. Still hoping for that affection and intimacy without having to ask. I guess we’ll see, neither of us slept well last night.
Tumblr media
Loaded a converter into my first pen and ran the purple ink. Digging this shade. I’ve learned that Enzo Ferrari only used purple ink for his correspondence, sounds like a plan to me. Now, if I could just try to limit myself and not go crazy in this collection. My last collections ended up with over 100 cigarette lighters and about 17 cocktail shakers.
Today was good. Tomorrow will be better.
Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Do you by any chance know if Ford v Ferrari is going to have the usual premiere around/just before the week of the film's actual release. Or was TIFF/LFF etc the premiere(s)? We've been spolit but I would love to see another red carpet event. Love your blog. Love Caitriona. Thanks for answering. x
Hi there, Anon! Thanks for stopping by!
Great question. I haven’t heard or seen anything “official” announced yet, but I would assume they would have a bigger American premiere independent of any of the film festivals Ford v. Ferrari / Le Mans ‘66 has been a part of so far. We have gotten so much goodness already when it comes to Caitriona + FvF, but I’m like you; I would LOVE to see even more! 😄
I did a quick search and did come across this Average Socialite post… which, tbh I have no idea whether or not they’re a trustworthy publication or not lol. BUT! If this information does turn out to be true, I’ll be sure to post more about it.

Younger post-ep ramble 6x02
You know how sometimes an episode of television feels like really good value? This week’s Younger episode, “Flushed with Love” felt like that to me. There was a LOT going on but it felt like it flowed really well, there was clear set up for the season and I gotta say, the first 7 mins of this ep gave me so many laughs, the writing was on point from the get go. The 23 min (though hello extra 2 mins, I see you) format is tricky at this stage of a series, especially one that has developed characters and relationships the way Younger has, because in order to keep the story moving forward attention needs to be paid to all those elements that have been established. So it will be interesting to see the pacing for the rest of the season, this ep was fast paced but didn’t feel too rushed, though I do hope that every now and then we get to sit in scenes of the upcoming episodes a little longer.
I love a morning in the loft with Liza and Maggie opening scene, there’s something so comforting about it and this ep served us up a good ‘un. Maggie paying out Liza’s outfit (she’s not wrong though), talking about her hook up with Clare’s mum as missionary work (first actual lol) and Maggie’s spidey senses tingling about Clare and her trustworthiness (though Liza is back in the Clare camp for now). It was brief, yet a nice reminder that these two roomies really have a relationship unlike any other on this show (I heart it very hard).
We waste no time getting to Aunt Liza’s first call of duty and that is, of course, baby goods shopping with Josh. This scene was utterly delightful and again, actual lols to be had. One of the many things I love about Younger is that it can venture into the silly or absurd to suit any given situation or character and even when it’s wrapped around something realistic and serious, it just works. This is one of my favourite scenes between Josh and Liza in recent memory, I felt like I saw what their friendship could/would look like (when someone finally puts this limping triangle out of its misery). I cackled at Josh’s, ‘I don’t understand why it comes out before it’s completely assembled’ and seeing him chug that gripe water after dry retching about the umbilical cord stump was pure slapsticky goodness. Of course it would not be a Liza/Josh scene without the reminder of Josh’s heart eyes for Liza, which featured in his lingering gaze as Liza advised against getting mobile as it gets in the way when you lean in for a kiss.
You know what I have heart eyes for? The 4 mins of this episode that starts at Lexington research centre and ends with Quinn asking Kelsey, ‘ARE YOU CRYING?’. The whole sequence is comedic gold. Seeing Diana, Kelsey and Liza sitting at the table together made my heart so happy, but not as happy as Diana taking Kelsey’s ‘since I’m the publisher’ from the start of the scene and using it to wish her luck telling Quinn her book sucks at the end. D. Trout is here to support you Big K but not put up with your ‘tude. This is also the first scene where we begin to see the experience vs. youth idea surface, as Diana tells Kelsey and Liza that it’s nice they think they have a choice about debuting with Quinn’s book. While Kelsey’s inexperience is easy enough to spot, Liza’s ‘I think this is so smart’ comment, just as the focus group feedback starts to roll, is the first reminder that Liza may be a fine editor with great ideas and her life experience sets her in good stead a lot of the time, but she is pretty much as green as they come in the business world. The Claw reader response reel, sweet lawd, I have watched this so many times and LAUGHED (yes, capital letters laughed) because the selection of responses, working their way to Suzzane’s shingles flaring up and Vicky begging to unread the book, are just too funny for words (”strong reactions”).
Thankfully we don’t have to wait long for Kelsey to deliver the news to Quinn because the nightmare continues over lunch aka. hilarity ensues. In case we needed some more convincing that Quinn does what Quinn wants, she immediately railroads the conversation by giving Kelsey and Liza gold business cards holders (that ‘poor Charles’ comment re: a quick exit, this woman just cannot help herself, Claw could not be a more apropos book title *meow*). Seeing Kelsey trying to find her feet in her new role is really interesting in this ep and the contrast between the first meeting and the later one when she makes Quinn sign a napkin contract to leave if the book bombs (boss move on Kelsey’s part, I rate that whole exchange a lot higher than Maggie’s current Uber rating...you’re welcome), demonstrates that Kelsey has the capacity to be a great publisher, but obvs there will be loads of DRAH-MAH to get there this season. But I tell you, if that drama includes being forced to chant in a restaurant full of strangers with a billionaire who may or may not have peaked in high school (Liza’s ‘what is happening’, the birth of ‘Big K’, Quinn sort of shrieking ‘are you crying?’, I just cannot with it all) then I am HERE FOR IT. I love the whole ridiculous scenario so much and once again, it’s flat out absurd but it somehow works and I’m 100% looking forward to Quinn’s next hit, coming this season: Fifty Shades of Cray.
Kelsey’s insecurity kicks into overdrive straight after lunch and this is undoubtedly going to be a recurring theme, as evidenced in the later exchange between Kelsey and Liza when Liza passes on the advice Charles offered in relation to publishing Claw as the first Millennial title under the new regime.  Kelsey chastising Liza for discussing the book with Charles was the first sign that the pressure is getting to her and the immediate accusation that Liza was running her ideas past Charles (as opposed to just talking about her day, you know, as you do with someone you’re in a relationship with) mirrored Kelsey’s reaction to finding out Liza and Charles were together in season 5, when she leapt to the conclusion that Liza was trying to undermine her decision not to publish the Krieger book.
Kelsey assuming the worst of Liza is something I really struggle with, especially considering Liza has proven time and time again that she has Kelsey’s back. I am still scratching my head at how the whole exchange resulted in Liza feeling the need to give a peace offering to Kelsey at the gender reveal party later, but I will park that for now. Ultimately, I felt sorry for Kelsey as we saw her presume that Liza thinks she’s out of her depth and misconstrue Liza saying she wasn’t strong enough with Quinn regarding the edits to mean that Liza doesn’t think Kelsey is strong enough herself. There has to be a point when Kelsey realises that Liza and co. all want her to succeed and turns to them for the support each can offer (at least I hope there comes a point) so it will certainly be interesting to see that play out.
Even at the fancy clothes event (this is what I have been referring to it as since seeing everyone dressed up in promos etc so I’ll stick with it) Kelsey is feeling like she does not belong (can we just talk about Kelsey’s portrait wedged in between all the unremarkable white-haired white men on the event poster? I want to print that whole display as postcards to send to people for no reason). Zane’s, ‘You’re standing in front of a bar, you’ve never belonged anywhere more in your life’, was both accurate and also a sweet attempt to reassure Kelsey. I’m finding Kelsey’s willingness to show vulnerability to Zane this season quite a contrast to their previous dynamic; last episode she was talking about finding her job harder than expected and this week, she reveals her struggle with impostor syndrome. I’m neither offended or excited by the Zelsey situation so that will be what it is and for those who are into it, I feel like there might be some great moments coming up in that relationship now that they appear to be on again *shrug emoji* Are they? Not sure. I am curious to see whether their relationship allows Kelsey to continue to open up more and give the audience a glimpse into her struggles and fears and I feel like I say this a lot, but I would like to get to continue to get to know Zane.
It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge that my excitement for Liza and Charles being dressed up and out together as an actual couple was through the roof going into this episode. Their entrance, with Charles’ smitten gaze firmly on Liza, followed quickly by the effortless literary exchange that reveals Liza is feeling a little out of her depth at such an event herself = le sigh. What I did not expect though was a) how much I was going love Lauren in this scene, I mean I really do love every time she is on my screen, but her conversation with Diana and Enzo, I could just transcribe it word for word (or you should just watch it again) because the whole thing, including Enzo’s delight and Diana’s horror (just a modern-day Juliet but with poop in her ear), was glorious; and b) Charles telling Liza that she’s taking bullets meant for him and he needs to fix it and the entire apology to Diana that followed. Zane and Charles’ little nods and Charles’ obvious diversion from Liza asking what that was about is duly noted, clearly the mystery around the newest Millennial/40-something team abounds and will no doubt come to a head soon.
Tumblr media
So it may have been a convenient distraction, but Charles cutting through the awkwardness to tell Diana they both know he owes her an apology, only for her to lay it all out as only Diana could, encapsulated the dynamic we’ve seen for the past five season between these two characters perfectly. Even though it’s only been two episodes, I miss their incidental interactions in the office, even if they’re often only fleeting. Obviously I blacked out momentarily when Charles told Diana that he can’t apologise for falling in love with Liza, but I thankfully regained consciousness in time to hear Diana twist Charles’ words and be happy to leave it as her hearing that she would be running Millennial had it been up to Charles.
I love that Liza continues to confront Charles and challenge him if she disagrees with him and hearing that Charles’ belief in Kelsey is genuine was lovely and I am so pleased that he has been confirmed as an ally and backer of hers. The reality is, we knew that Empirical was in financial trouble last season, Charles was open about that, but his advice around how to handle Quinn’s book was sound, I love that he also acknowledged that maybe Kelsey’s plan will work and I feel like the ‘experience means something’ idea may resurface in a surprising way down the track. Liza’s cogs were clearly turning and the challenge for her is going to be whether she is strong enough to call Kelsey out or stand up to her at times.
I am glad to see Charles respect that Liza is in a difficult position and his understanding when she asked that they not discuss Millennial was admirable. I adore how dry Charles is when he and Liza are alone, his humour in the way he talks about branching out to other cuisines and of course, the fabulous dead pan agreement that he will not tell Liza about the movie other than a few tidbits and ‘that’s all you get’ *swoon*. Cue Liza once again being unabashedly suggestive and helping herself to dessert. I really appreciate that Younger shows the way characters are different in these private romantic relationships, it’s realistic and reflects the way we show different sides of ourselves when we’re with someone we love and are comfortable with. Of course Liza’s request to keep work talk out of the relationship will no doubt prove problematic as Charles and Zane’s machinations unfold, however it also means that if Charles is not forthcoming in revealing their plans, he may arguably be respecting her wishes. I still hold out hope that whatever drama that needs to play out does so, but that Kelsey, Liza, Charles and Zane ultimately team up again to work together, along with Diana and Lauren. I mean, talk about the A team.
Speaking of A teams, Diana and Enzo (#Dianzo I think we settled on??). Never have I shushed at a character quite like I did Diana as she careened towards the point of no return during her post-event walk with Enzo. It was like watching some kind of horrifying game of insult Jenga, where instead of wooden pieces, every time Diana kept trying to clarify that actually, she just meant she thought she’d be with someone cultured, sophisticated etc, we could see the pieces of Enzo’s heart being slowly extracted before the whole thing broke completely (along with mine). I actually yelled ‘stop talking’ at one point and it was a reminder that Diana’s tendency to be self absorbed and inconsiderate is still well and truly in tact. It did allow for yet another splendid Lauren/Diana interaction the next morning at work, Lauren’s sympathy evident as she referred to Diana by her actual name instead of Diva, and I just love how obsessed Lauren is with Diana. I need to see more of them together and yes please out at a bar.
Of course the real pay off and Dianzo resolution came towards the end of the episode when we discovered that Diana had written and published their love story herself. Side note: I want Miriam Shor to narrate all my books. Diana and Enzo’s simple yet emotional reunion was so moving, in part because of the accompanying narration but also because Diana’s walls are finally down with Enzo, she’s allowing herself to be in love with him because that’s what she wants and needs. I just love the character development of Diana over the series and I cannot wait to see the Diana and Enzo story unfold over the rest of the season.
The fastest moving part of this episode was undoubtedly the gender reveal to birth of baby which occurred in the space of about four minutes. When Liza arrived at the party I really got the impression that as she looked over at Josh and Clare, she was simply happy for them. And poor Liza being tasked with holding the balloon for the big reveal only to let it go, that whole situation was so relatable and would definitely be me if I was given that responsibility. Clare did a fantastic job of moving from first contraction to crowning baby in the back of an Uber in mere minutes. I cannot even tell you how ecstatic I am that Maggie was the character put into the back of that car, that scene was so bonkers but the dialogue, from Maggie asking why she was in the splash zone and ‘it’s coming for me’ and telling Josh the breathing’s not working, to Clare’s ‘you and I are the only two women who’ve been inside my mother, we’re bonded’ and of course ‘no baby in my Uber!’, it has to have been one of the most hectic moments ever on this show but jeez was it funny.
The entire outro of this episode, with Diana’s narration tying together all the fragments, was sublime and obviously credit to Don Roos for the stellar writing. I have said it before, but having a young guy so openly yearn to be a father is really refreshing and seeing Josh with his baby was beautiful. This character just desperately wants to love and be loved and I really believe that his daughter will give that to him in a way he deserves. For Liza, seeing Josh with the baby would undoubtedly dredge up all kinds of feelings. I am not naive enough to believe that the writers won’t continue to stoke the ‘Team’ debate, however for now I am going to put my faith in the fact that actually, the story that’s playing out is one that is real and multifaceted. To see an ex, whom you loved, with a baby that you were very clear you did not want, I don’t doubt that there would be a moment of, ‘what would my life have looked like if that had been me?’. It doesn’t mean Liza wants that now, but I do believe that coupled with the words Diana is reading, it is a time of letting go and reflection for Liza.
When Liza returns to the brownstone (ok, two things quickly, umm how does she get in to the house? I would NOT put it past C. Brooks to have given her a key already but I need confirmation asap. Also, turns out casual Charles is a barefoot guy, which I am struggling with a little because it is Winter and he is sitting reading, surely there’d at least be socks but apparently not), I will admit that I found the exchange between her and Charles a little odd, I can’t really explain why. I really liked Charles’ reaction to the news of a baby girl, his understanding of what it’s like to become a parent felt really evident in his response. I could (most likely am) be completely over-thinking it, but I wonder if Charles asking Liza if she’s happy is because he knows this would be hard for Liza?
I feel like the fact she needs a hug is a dead give away that she’s needing some TLC and time to process. I truly love a hug, I find them to be more intimate sometimes than a kiss, like a real proper hug and I feel like we don’t get many on TV and the way Liza pulls Charles to her and he holds her does things to my heart. The look on Liza’s face at the end, it is obviously to serve the purpose of stirring up the Josh/Charles debate but you know what? I just want to engage in the narrative as it is written and I do believe that Liza is happy with Charles and is grieving the ‘what could have been’ with Josh in that moment and to me, that’s ok. It will be how these characters and the story move forward from this point that I’m really keen to see.
All in all, I really enjoyed episode 2, it was an episode of extremes in many ways because the funny was oh so funny and the emotional really up and got me at the end there.
Be sure to have your fire blankets ready for next week’s ep, if you’ve seen the sneak peek you know why and if you haven’t just trust me, it will be necessary.
