a sapphic lit primer 🌸
also known as, an opportunity to insist you read my favourites
if you’ve ever found yourself wanting to read more sapphic books, but not quite sure where to start, let this be the post for you! if you’re looking for even more sapphic books, i hope you find something in here too.
there are a few books on here i’ve not read, that i wanted to include to raise awareness of them, more than anything. those are marked by *. as such, you will probably also see a fair few more well known books and authors missed off (but i promise i know about them!).
this is not meant to be at all exhaustive! it’s a collection of sapphic books that i’ve read and would rec, meaning there are still tons more out there. & you can find some of those more at @sapphicreadsdb, readsrainbow (which i co-run with @tenderpotter), sapphiclitbot on twitter & my list of every sapphic book i’ve read.
as ever, this was meant to be a relatively short post. haha.
(i promise i did put links on this post, but for some reason those aren’t working on the blog page. dashboard version seems fine, i think.)

𝒏𝒊𝒌𝒆, 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝝂𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚.
this character is allied with and/or a ranked member of the minotaur network.
suggested faces — please note, this character must be 25+ years old. arden cho; nicole beharie; asia kate dillon; troian bellisario; aja naomi king; january jones; karla souza; chloe bennet; neve campbell; sarah rafferty; eva longoria; sarah snook; erin richards.
suggested occupations. a captain within the network, looking after its less-than-legal gambling operations, including organizing illegal underground fights; bookie; general manager at the (secretly) network-owned casino; loan shark; secretary or personal assistant to the mayor, and the eyes and ears of the minotaur network within the mayor's office; a lawyer and fixer employed by altın associates at law (the midas-owned firm).

ʙʀᴀᴠᴇ ɴᴇᴡ ᴏʟʏᴍᴘᴜꜱ : ᴀ 21+ ᴍᴏᴅᴇʀɴ ɢʀᴇᴇᴋ ᴍʏᴛʜᴏʟᴏɢʏ ᴅɪꜱᴄᴏʀᴅ ʀᴏʟᴇᴘʟᴀʏ. athens, new york: an island city, all trees and marble, glass and steel and highrises set against an ocean skyline. bustling and loud, crowded, but not without a bizarre sense that it must have sprung up overnight, somehow, when surely it must have always been here, no? on a clear night, you might even be able to see the lights of its more famous cousin, new york city, across the water…if you squint hard enough. it may not get as much attention as the shiny apple across the hudson, but those not so blinded by the lights must certainly have been coming here for years. is there something in the water here, too? no one leaves, not in any meaningful way anyway. feels like it has a special way of pulling you back in, if you try. they, that is anyone who was anyone or paid even an iota of attention to the evening news,, called him the minotaur. the media does love a catchy nom de guerre, doesn’t it? sells newspapers like hotcakes in the morning. ambrosia, whether it’s the latest designer drug trend or the latest pestilence sweeping the streets of athens, just depends on how tightly you clutch your pearls on sundays. must infuriate the police, don’t it? that without fail, by the time they arrive to any crime scene at all, all that’s left is the heap of little cream-coloured business cards, the red lines of a labyrinthine logo more taunting than they are helpful. between an epidemic of pearlescent powder, neatly parceled out in small plastic baggies, a tide of crimson bull graffiti, casinos and bordellos and the nightlife (oh my!), it’s no small wonder they call this an atlantic sin city. it’s a vice eat dog world, ain’t it? and anyone who calls athens home is just living in it. powerless, with no memory of their past lives, what's a god gotta do to survive?

Naturally Pittsburgh: Big Rivers and Steep Wooded Slopes
by Patrick McShea
Pittsburghers are accustomed to seeing their hometown visually portrayed with its river-hemmed Downtown as a focal point. If your goal is to understand how the city’s geographical position in the greater landscape of southwestern Pennsylvania influences its wildlife and plant cover, images from different perspectives are useful.
Tumblr media
Nine Mile Island, left, and Sycamore Island, right, in the lower Allegheny River. Photo credit: Allegheny Land Trust.
The picture above offers a bird’s eye view down the Allegheny River at a point nine miles upstream from the 325-mile-long waterway’s confluence with the Monongahela River. That much-photographed merge point, which creates the Ohio River, can be spatially located in the frame’s right-of-center background by the hazy blur of Downtown’s tallest buildings. The eye movement required to locate the spot involves tracing steep left-bank wooded bluffs from suburban Penn Hills and along the Pittsburgh neighborhoods of Lincoln-Lemington, Highland Park, and Morningside.
This simple exercise has relevance to the upcoming City Nature Challenge (CNC) for the visual attention it brings to the paired Pittsburgh physical features that keep nature in continual view here - our river system and the steep wooded hillsides carved by these big winding waterways and their tributaries.
Corridors Support Biodiversity
Both features create habitat corridors that serve to enrich the city’s biodiversity. The pair of Bald Eagles with a long record of nesting success on a wooded Monongahela River hillside in Pittsburgh’s Hays neighborhood are the most prominent evidence of this phenomena. Some of the fish they feed their young at this time of year can be regarded as additional evidence.
Tumblr media
Pittsburgh fish displayed in tank set-up by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission.
Many of the organisms supported by Pittsburgh’s wooded and flowing water corridors do not, however, lend themselves to the photo-documentation of the CNC. Some notable tree specimens and spring wildflower stands are found on high inaccessible ledges, river visits by diverse forms of waterfowl occur more frequently in the winter rather than the spring, and the predictability of the dozens fish species found in Pittsburgh’s waters challenges even the anglers who pursue them.
Importance of Incomplete Survey
The solution to this dilemma, as you record CNC observations and interpret the collective results, is simply to regard this important citizen science initiative as necessarily incomplete. In a recent BioScience paper co-authored by Nicole Heller, Curator of Anthropocene Studies at CMNH, analysis of urban biodiversity studies from all over the world pointed to the importance of enhancing public engagement and environmental stewardship. That is something that can certainly happen this year between April 30 and May 3, in a City Nature Challenge that recognizes some unavoidable bio-survey gaps.
Patrick McShea works in the Education and Visitor Experience department of Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Museum employees are encouraged to blog about their unique experiences and knowledge gained from working at the museum.

2020 reading late round-up
i promised myself i’d read more last year and i did!  but i had no time to write this because 2021 has been too busy.  i read a book every 2 weeks last year and so far in 3 months i’ve only re-read 1 single book.  i meant to read more nonfiction but it’s almost all fiction lmao.  so much for reading theory.
34 finished, 37 attempts, 26 are Lesbian Interest, only 4 written by men.  so i had a very female and lesbian book year, but sadly very few were worth the read! i read a lot but i read a lot of absolute garbage! i can only recommend a paltry 6 books i read despite trying to read stuff i though i’d like.
highlighted “LI” stands for “lesbian interest,” as in, has a lesbian author or has lesbian/bisexual woman characters and themes.  some LI books have bisexual authors but les/bi f/f romance so they get counted.
100% WOULD RECOMMEND:
The Summer Book by Tove Jansson (LI) fiction
Land of Lost Borders by Kate Harris (LI) travel memoir
Aspen in Moonlight by Kelly Wacker (LI) romance
Sister of the Earth, ed Lorraine Anderson, nature anthology, didn’t finish yet but it’s really good
Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith, mystery
The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith, mystery
RECOMMENDED WITH RESERVATIONS
Painted Moon by Karin Kallmaker (LI) romance, beginning was wonderful ending was weird
Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward, fiction, depressing black intergenerational trauma
Grave Silence by Rose Beecham (LI) mystery, romance is disappointing but the protag was very authentically lesbian
Dear America by Jose Antonio Vargas, memoir, should have just been a long essay
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, fiction, too heterosexual and not enough nature but ending made up for it all.  goodforher.jpg
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith (LI) fiction, depressing and too many damn men
If Not, Winter: Sappho translated by Anne Carson (LI) poetry, i got nothing from this
The Whale Rider by Witi Ihimaera, fiction, movie is better/more female-forward
The Sealed Letter by Emma Donoghue (LI) fiction, terrible story but SO SO well written i flew through it
Desert of the Heart by Jane Rule (LI) romance, movie is way better and not steeped in depressing psychology
Of Witches by Janet Thompson, spirituality, not helpful or interesting
Poems by Rita Mae Brown (LI) bad bad poetry
The Weaver by Emmi Itäranta (LI) dystopia fiction, had potential but tedious
Evergreen Tidings from the Baumgartners by Gretchen Anthony (LI) family, boring and trite
The Left Hand of Justice by Jess Faraday (LI) romance, had potential but the author just fucking gave up towards the end
Uncharted by Robyn Nyx (LI) romance
The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water by Zen Cho (technically LI) fantasy, i cannot for the life of me understand why it was written other than to appease her publisher
Not Your Average Love Spell by Barbara Ann Wright (LI) fantasy romance, boring
Month of Sundays by Yolanda Wallace (LI) romance, boring
Comrade Cowgirl by Yolanda Wallace (LI) romance, okayish
Sequestered Hearts by Erin Dutton (LI) romance, boring
Fever by VK Powell (LI) romance, awful
Whispers in the Wind by Frankie J Jones (LI) romance, boring
Treasured Past by Linda Hill (LI) romance, boring
Claire of the Moon by Nicole Conn (LI) romance, pretentious
Racing Towards Providence by Laurel Mills (LI) romance, awfulboring
Real Love by Jeanne McCann (LI) godawful romance, racist
Alice Isn’t Dead by Joseph Fink (LI) HATED THIS
A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood, gay depressing fiction
SO BAD I COULDN’T FINISH IT
Venus Envy by Rita Mae Brown (LI) fiction, WHAT THE FUCK THIS WAS SO HOMOPHOBIC AND MISOGYNISTIC BROWN WAS REALLY SHOWING HER TRUE HOMOPHOBIC-BISEXUAL FEELINGS IN THIS SHIT
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, YA, style is impossible to read as an adult, either the author is very skilled or very bad at how juvenile this read
