tolp, do you have any idea for a vampire au for the vk fan family? like I have a mess of an idea but in general the vks have been vampire hunters for a while (maybe around frieda who picks it up from her dad instead of letting the tradition die). it's like random ideas but everyone shunning manfred (dead or alive, frieda is rolling on her grave over this) and the current generation (his kids, maybe miles too?) are trying to hunt him down and kill him because if you make a mistake and do not correct it is a second mistake and von karmas do not make mistakes (thanks for that again granny). the only way to fix their tained/blemished name is by killing him.
Hmmm, let me storm some brains. I’ll throw some ideas, something will stick
Siegfried’s family branch? Werewolves, all of them. The rules say “vampire hunter” not “can’t be another bloodthirsty occult being”.
Franziska fighting tooth and nail to clear her name because everyone assumes she is also a vampire.
Griselda: the grand master of vampire lore and knowledge. She’s read all the books. She’s never actually fought a vampire.
Gundalf is trying to avoid the whole vampire hunting business, but keeps running into vampires and kills them by an accident. Like “gets tangled in a curtain, falls down, takes the drapery with him, vampire is exposed to direct sunlight and dies.
Markov abuses his werewolf heritage to make his blood absolutely rancid. So far no vampire has taken a sip, although he is trying his best to serve as a living bait, but mosquitoes and ticks die at the sight of him.
Helena tried to get out of the vampire hunting business by finding a someone, marrying them and living a calm sedentary life. Four times. Every time her husband (or wife) turned out to be another vampire, and Helena is just very tired of stabbing her spouses in the dead of the night with a stake again and again and again.
Nikolle is a dhampir. When she grows up, she is going to live through some Vampire Hunter D bullshit.
Erstin and subsequently Frieda were just vampire researchers at first. It was Bernard’s amazing idea to start hunting them.
“to know your enemy you have to walk a mile in his shoes” thing explains the entirety of the von Karma aesthetics and a lot of principles.
All three bullets that hit Siegfried were silver, but since they hit him just in the shoulder, they still didn’t kill him.
Siegfried’s investigation vampire hunting partner was actually a vampire and it’s a miracle the two of them didn’t try to kill each other sooner.
manfred still gets birthday postcards from markov, this time as a power move. markov just thinks there are other vampires who are a bigger threat and therefore higher priority. besides, manfred is from herman’s family branch, it should be that branch which sorts this mess out.
everyone actually thinks it should be friedrich and/or griselda who find and kill manfred. friedrich refuses to do anything this dangerous and stupid, griselda doesn’t like the idea of leaving her library.
leonore is practically a witch with her knowledge and skills, but she refuses to admit it or rely on it. she is an active occult denier as her uncle turns into a big wolf in front of her eyes. it must be thursday, she’s never got the hang of thursdays.
gretchen has been kidnapped by several vampires and threatened to be turned. so far nobody expected her pocket garlic powder. or that her “fairy wand” is actually just a very fancy stake.

Get to know me tag game!
thank you for the tag @foreverinelysian! these games are so fun (also good luck with finals!); starting a new post because the last chain was getting long
three ships: Feysand, Sherlolly, Erstine, my beloveds
first ever ship: The first ship I was like...aware of shipping/fanfiction/fandom arguments over and had opinions about was Artemis Fowl/Minerva Paradizo. My love for Minerva was very much my introduction to defending female characters who get demonized for things the fandom LOVES the men for.
last song: Run Away with Me by Carly Rae Jepsen, I've had the "every! single! minute!/I'll be your hero and WIN IT" bit stuck in my head for ages
last film: The Barbie Movie, had an adorable sibling date with my brother to go see it! We both wore pink shirts and had fun
currently reading: Marry Me by Midnight by Felicia Grossman! It's a swoony gender-flipped Cinderella retelling in 19th century London
currently watching: the only TV I've been watching lately has been Eagles games (GO BIRDS FLY EAGLES FLY)
currently consuming: water because it's winter and my skin is dry
currently craving: P O T A T O E S
Leaving this as an open tag; if you want to jump in, consider yourself tagged!

Anime Update 60
Dragon Ball - While Tambourine is still on his serial killing spree of martial artists around the world, King Piccolo is turning his attention towards seeking out the Dragon Balls and the Pilaf gang is starting to realize more and more just how out of their depth they really are in serving this guy. The most notable part of the episode is how Piccolo creates his new spawn, Cymbal. I knew how that would look before he did it but it was still disgusting and shudder inducing to watch.
Love, Chunibyo, and Other Delusions - The incident of Yuta saving Rikka from falling off the school rooftop pushed them a little bit closer together and a little bit further in how they process their feelings, with Rikka being the first to confess (I guess Dekomori’s a better help with these things than Sunohara is). But then Toka goes and puts Yuta in a spot where he has to get Rikka to finally face reality and give up on her Chunibyo since Toka’s made plans to go off to Italy and leave Rikka to take care of herself. What ended up frustrating me was that for some reason we weren’t actually shown the immediate aftermath of Yuta asking Rikka to take off her eye patch. It just cuts to the end of the cultural festival where Rikka sings her late father’s favorite song before removing her eye patch to reveal her eye looking normal (after the credits!), though I will say the idea that they had to substitute a Yuta VS Rikka performance with a Nibutani VS Dekomori performance (with very real hitting on Deko’s part) was amusing and felt right. I’m also finding that while I like Yuta as a character, I really don’t care much for his voice acting in the dub. He has this tendency to speak too softly and mutter his lines in serious scenes that just really bugs me and makes him sound way too disconnected from someone who ever had Chunibyo himself. In a mostly solid dub cast, Leraldo Anzaldua is easily the weak link.
My-Otome - We seem to be finally inching away from the “stuff happened” section of the series and getting into the real plot action that the show’s been building towards since the start. Arika and her two gal pals (y’know, her two gal pals who aren’t Nina and Mashiro?) are now actively striving to all become Meister Otomes while Mashiro is finally starting to get shit done from her throne. With Nagi casting aside Azwad and accelerating his work with the Schwartz, a stronger Otome response from Windbloom and Garderobe is required to quell the unrest and warring in Romulus and Remus. I did get a kick out of seeing that after sparks flew between Nao and Shiho earlier on in the show, Shiho has now gotten the last laugh as she’s been granted a crucial diplomatic role while Nao is saddled with a job that she doesn’t like because it messes up all of her life’s plans; sucks to be you, Nao! Arika wants her mystery benefactor (who we all know to be Sergay) to see her when she graduates to a higher Otome level and meet her in person. But evil is rearing it’s ugly head first in the form of Tomoe, who Arika beat in a dance battle at the start and for some reason wants to end all of Arika’s prospects, so she tries to fucking drop a dangerous acidic substance on top of Arika and would’ve succeeded had Erstin not got in the way! What is this psychotic bitch’s deal? And then by the very end, Nagi’s coup is underway!
Assassination Classroom S2 - Watched the two-part “Reaper Time” story arc that takes place some time after Bitch-Sensei’s birthday, which was on October 10. We found out more about Bitch-Sensei here; try as she might, she’s not someone who can totally put aside emotion for the sake of her line of work, whether that be in academics or assassination, which leads to some heartbreak thanks to Karasuma’s emotionally disconnected, strictly professional approach. Wanting to revert back to the heartless spy and assassin she used to be, Bitch-Sensei plays right into the hands of the Reaper, and from there we get to get into some of her backstory, how she lost her family in a war-ravaged nation, lived on her own in poverty, and was offered up to Lovro to train her in being a killer. While she and Karasuma seem both willing to turn on E Class and side with Reaper in the hopes of finally killing Korosensei, neither of them prove willing to let this go on to the point of risking the kids’ lives. Karasuma turns first, but Bitch-Sensei takes a while because Reaper has her convinced that she’s the same as him, even when she very clearly is not. I loved how it’s set up like we’re going to get the cliched “she’s gonna aim her gun at him but won’t be able to go through with it ‘cause she loves him too much” scene only for Reaper to very abruptly push a detonator and bring the place down on Karasuma and Bitch-Sensei before that point is even reached! And while Bitch-Sensei might have seemed a bit too easily forgiven for her betrayal, the kids did make a good point that backstabbing and working around lethal force fired by someone who was a comrade just a while ago is kind of part of an assassin’s life, so they’d be no good at what they’re being taught and trained to be if they couldn’t handle it well. I’m just glad she and Karasuma are back together.
My biggest quibble here, surprisingly, would be the Reaper himself. On one hand he’s a very creepy character, so seemingly ordinary and friendly that he can slip right in and catch his prey unawares, and his methods for trapping and killing were as sadistically slow and methodical as they were effective. He reminds me of Nagito Komaeda in Danganronpa with how, unlike Takaoka, his cheery demeanor and affable personality is legit a product of his insane mind, and Ian Sinclair’s voice acting for him was perfect. But on the other hand, he’s the weakest of the series’ four major antagonists for a number of reasons, a big one being that he just doesn’t live up to his own in-universe hype. He didn’t really kill Lovro (as we’ll find out later), he didn’t get all that close to killing any of the good guys (Itona honestly felt like more of a threat to Korosensei than him), and he ends up going down ridiculously easy in a fight with Karasuma. After losing his false face and revealing his true form to look like freaking Red Skull! It’s easy to loathe him, but the fear of him diminishes and it becomes increasingly difficult to take him seriously. He might improve a bit upon his inevitable return, but right now he’s a major letdown. Then again, he’s really just a copycat of the guy who killed his father and inspired him to kill in the first place, a man of mystery who Korosensei regards as a low-life fool, and for good reason...
Vinland Saga - This episode was more than a bit strange, as I didn’t even know where I stood on what it was doing. For a lot of time the focus is on the family of this girl named Anne and how...Christian they are. And when I say that I mean that they’re written almost like a Ned Flanders-esque parody of Christianity, with lines like “Jesus told us to pray, and Jesus is always right” and fearmongering about how sinners are damned to Hell to the point where poor Anne fears for her own soul due to having stolen a bracelet from the market some time back. But then Askeladd and his merry band of Vikings come along and ransack the snowy village for supplies right at a time where Anne is away, and this is when Askeladd finally crosses the line into straight up unredeemable monster territory. He assures all the frightened villagers, who are pleading for him to leave half the food with them so that they may survive the winter, that he won’t let them suffer from starvation...because he’ll have his men massacre each and every one of them. And that’s exactly what happens! It was a horrifying moment, but possibly even more horrifying is Anne’s response to having witnessed it - she prays to God, showing that she still believes in Him, but expresses her feelings of eustasy over knowing that He can bring such punishment upon the virtuous from men who don’t fear His condemnation, and spare a sinner like her. And then she passes out in the snow. Damn. I guess this marks the start of her path towards a life of sin, vice, villainy and....huh? Wait, she’s not going to factor into any future story? What the Hell!?
Magic Knight Rayearth - Just as the girls were finally reaching the point where they could revive the Rune God, Ascot corners them in person with the biggest, baddest monster he’s summoned yet, which was good ‘cause I was growing weary of waiting for this to occur. While I made fun of Ascot for this before, he really is a great character for playing with the typical high fantasy RPG disposable monsters trope, giving us someone who actually cherishes those creatures as friends and is emotionally devastated when the heroes slay them without a second thought. But of course the flaws in Ascot’s view of friendship are made apparent too as he’s not valued his friends’ lives enough to not send them charging into danger and the monsters don’t respect him as an individual to the point where they’d ever make any sacrifices for him. This is cleverly contrasted with the test that the Rune God gives Umi, and how she chooses to help her friends rather than obey the Rune God’s insistence. Now that Ascot’s retreated and the Rune God, revealed to be a giant robot, has been brought back out into Cephiro, Zagato notes that “they revived one of the Rune Gods.” So wait, there’s more???
A Place Further Than The Universe -  Who knew that becoming eligible for the Antarctic expedition was as simple as getting in the good graces of a high school girl who was already set to be on it? That’s seriously what happens here - Shirase and her friends luck out when a teen celebrity named Yuzuki tries to get Shirase to take her place, and then they end up having to convince Yuzuki to go on the trip with her mother in exchange for being granted permission for themselves as reward. Granted it’s not TOO simple since Yuzuki really wants to stay in her hometown so that she may attend school and make friends, even though her celebrity status has only ever barred her from having a single true friend in her whole life. The part where Kimari, Shirase, and Miyake all show up at Yuzuki’s hotel room door to get her up and go with her to Tokyo, making her feel what it’s like to truly have friends and reduce her to tears, was incredibly moving, as was the “was it just a dream?” moment before where Kimari and co. reached out to her from outside the window. (This anime’s style, characters, group interactions and sentimental heart have been giving me a lot of Love Live! vibes and this was just pure Chika and Riko shit here.) I’m very interested in seeing where this goes now. Like, who was that woman with the picture of Shirase and her mother who showed up after the credits? The plot thickens!
AND
When They Cry: Higurashi - Re-watched the remaining arcs in the first season. To give my brief opinions and assessments on them:
Cotton Drifting arc - While the first arc was a great stage-setter for the rest of the series, this is the arc that really solidified it’s staying power. The horror factor of Oyashiro’s curse and all the going-ons around it is still present but rather than a ghost story, it takes on a more murder mystery approach, and unlike the blurry stream of paranoia that was the previous arc, in this one there turns out to be a true villain behind the events, one of the best in the series. It also gives a lot more depth to Mion, Rena and Rika (with Rena being one hell of a badass competent super sleuth), has Ooishi come off as just a little bit more reliable than he was before, and ends on one Hell of a jump scare. My two issues are that it has two different climaxes that both rely on Keiichi making the absolute dumbest choices that gets him nearly killed by the same person twice and drags the arc out more than it needed to be, and that it’s the only Question Arc that doesn’t stand on it’s own well - once you’ve seen it’s corresponding Answer Arc (Eye Opening), it’s impossible to not think of it when you go back to this one. Like the Sonozaki twins, they’re inseparable.
Curse Killing arc - This one was and still is my least favorite arc in the series. While I appreciate what it does for Satoko and Keiichi as characters and how well yet subtly it sets up the true mastermind of the curse, the subject matter of child abuse and how fucking terribly that issue is handled in Japan is so uncomfortable, the sheer amount of “adults are awful” instances (Teppei, Dr. Irie, Mrs. Maebara, Takano, and especially Ooishi are just the worst here) gets tiresome, the fallout of killing Teppei that Keiichi finds himself dealing with is screwy and unpleasant even for this series, and I think showing us a little girl’s mangled, disembowled corpse being feasted on by crows was taking just a step too far. It’s not a bad arc, just my least liked.
Time Wasting arc - Another one I’m not super fond of, but it’s only two episodes long and is at least something very different; set years before Keiichi moved to Hinamizawa, starring a new character, showing how things were like when the dam conflict was still looming large and Oyashiro’s Curse wasn’t an annual thing yet, revealing stuff about Rika that changes our perspective of the character, and serving as the main springboard for the entire rest of the series’ plot. The final scene where Akasaka remembers how Rika had predicted the course of the next couple of years’ deaths on Cotton Drifting night, ending with her own death and the quarantine of the entire village, was the one that really made it clear to me how invested I’d become in this story. I needed answers, the answers still yet to come.
Eye Opening arc - Possibly my favorite arc in the series and while not the scariest, it’s absolutely the darkest and most sinister. Shion Sonozaki comes out as a protagonist you never knew you wanted to follow, and as her story goes on we watch the state of her mind and her moral compass deteriorate, her spiral into madness, hateful feelings and vengeful intent warping her into the most diabolical and depraved villain to threaten Hinamizawa. It gives us more insight into Satoshi Houjo than the previous arcs to heavily factor him in as a plot device, raises so many possibilities for what might be the real truth behind the curse via Shion investigating into the matter only to definitively dash them all in the end, presents some of the most iconic, most gruesome, and most uncomfortable moments in the series (Shion getting three fingernails removed, Rika headbutting a knife ‘til she drops dead, Satoko getting crucified and stabbed to death), and it really tests the limits of how much you can stay behind your lead character and root for her in her fight against perceived injustice as her actions and behavior grow less and less excusable. It’s 6 episodes (the longest running arc in the first season) and it’s last episode is still really difficult to get through, it’s so horrific. My one quibble is that the anime really botched the ending. It feels like they ran out of time in the episode to actually properly conclude the arc so they just drop Shion to a super anticlimactic death. WEAK.
Atonement arc - Also possibly my favorite arc in the series! This more than any other chapter is a major turning point in the narrative, as it finally unveils some clear-cut truth about the long-standing mysteries of Hinamizawa (Oyashiro was a human medical healer rather than a wrathful deity, the “demon’s blood” that rises up in people is actually a parasitic virus from the Onigafuji swamp, and there’s some unknown group working within Irie’s clinic that is actually behind the killings and disappearances of the so-called curse during Cotton Drifting and who want the truth to stay covered.) It also tells a great character-driven story with Rena that ends up tying back to the first arc and blowing everyone’s minds when Keiichi actually gains memories of that arc’s events that turns everything we’d seen and thought we knew in it on it’s head. The climax is my favorite climax in the whole series, with Rena going completely batshit and holding her whole school hostage with even a fucking bomb threat, everyone working together to thwart a common threat, and an awesome Keiichi VS Rena clash on the rooftop that ends up bringing the arc to, for the very first time, a good end (and for a series called “When They Cry”, it hadn’t made me cry until the last two episodes, first with Keiichi’s Heel Realization and then with Rena’s.) It feels so much like setting a new standard and a new stage for the following season, making it an ideal first season finale.

For Sirnja, Lyswen, and Marza (if applicable to her, idk how much u have any her): 1, 3, 6, 9, and 15. For Erstin, Sirnja, and Sille 1, 3, 6, 7, 11, and 12. And for Mailie and Ardalie 1, 3, 5, 8, 9, 15, and 18. Sorry for so many questions i just love learning abt people's OCs :')
hi hi hi this is going to be very long
Sirnja
General
Class
Fighter, specifically an arena fighter. She wear medium/heavy armor and uses a mix of axes and swords. She dabbles in alchemy and restoration magic, mostly for practical reasons. After traveling to Cyrodiil, she developed some stealth skills.
Background
Is this character from their race's home province/territory? If not, what is their relationship with the region? Do they feel a connection to it?
She is! I wouldn't say Sirnja feels particularly connected Hammerfell or her specific home. She just sort of goes wherever.
What was their childhood like? Who raised them? Do they have siblings?
Sirnja was raised in a large, multigenerational family. Her parents died when she was very young, and many of her family members treated her like a burden. She was close with a couple of her aunts, but none of her uncles. She left home at 16 to fight in the arenas, and hasn't seen any of her family since.
Do they worship any gods? Who? How do they feel about the gods in general?
Initially, no. Sirnja has no time for the divine. Later, she develops a devotion to the Night Mother, and a passing respect for Sithis. She does not care for men, even the non-physical, arguably genderless kind.
What are their interpersonal relationships like? Are they close with many people?
Sirnja is... not great with people. Like at all. However, she finds a community at Thirsk, and comes to really like them.
What's their relationship with their family like? Do they have one?
Like I said, she hasn't seen them in years. So again, not great.
Morrowind stuff
Why were they sent to Morrowind? Were they truly guilty?
Murder. She traveled to Cyrodiil in hopes of fighting in the capital A Arena, but got into a fight with someone and killed them. She is very, very guilty.
Do they align themselves with any great houses? If yes, why?
She joins House Redoran for the benefits, and because their whole vibe fits with her skill set. She doesn't really care about them, to be honest.
Do they believe their self to be Nerevar reincarnated? Do you?
She does not, but she feels that there's a piece of him in her, if that makes sense. I agree with her. I draw a distinction between having bits of Nerevar in you and fully being Him.
How do they feel about the Tribunal in general? Do they trust them?
She does not trust them a bit. She somehow likes them even less than she likes all the other gods.
Where do they go at the end of the game? Do they leave Tamriel?
Initially, she hangs out at Thirsk for a while as their new chief. She has a pretty good time, but she gets restless and decides to go back to Cyrodiil for a bit.
Oblivion Stuff
Why are they in prison at the start of the game? How long had they been there?
Same reason she got shipped to Morrowind: killed somebody. Only this time, the empire had no use for her, so they chucked her in prison. She'd been there for a couple years. To be honest, she fully expected to be let out the moment they needed another pawn.
What's their relationship with Martin? Are they coworkers, acquaintances, friends, partners?
Somewhere between acquaintances and friends. Sirnja is really bad at talking to people, but Martin is a sweetheart and managed to get some conversation out of her. He likes her.
Which daedric quests do they do? Which artifact do they give Martin?
All of them. I think she gave him Volendrung, because it was a) heavy and b) not useful to her.
How do they handle Martin's death? Who do they lean on for support, if anyone?
She just kind of... disappeared. Sirnja does not do emotional vulnerability.
Do they mantle Sheogorath? What exactly does that mean, in their case?
Kinda. I imagine Sheo as a force that grows inside of her over time, but once he gets strong enough, they separate.
Do they stay in the Shivering Isles? Is it by choice?
No. She actually kind of likes it there, but she gets bored eventually and leaves.
Lyswen
General
Class
Lyswen's a thief. It's basically the only thing she's ever done in life. Having weapons that weren't stolen or looted off a dead body was a trip. While in Morrowind, she learns some mysticism.
Background
Is this character from their race's home province/territory? If not, what is their relationship with the region? Do they feel a connection to it?
Lyswen grew up in Valenwood, and she misses it dearly. She feels very exposed when she's not surrounded by plant life.
What was their childhood like? Who raised them? Do they have siblings?
Lyswen was orphaned very young, and was taken in by a group of young thieves, all of whom were pretty much in the same boat. Think that one bit of Oliver Twist minus the wildly antisemitic caricature. She considers those people to be her family, and she has every right to, considering they raised her.
Do they worship any gods? Who? How do they feel about the gods in general?
She doesn't have a strong interest in the gods, but she isn't hostile to them like Sirnja. She just doesn't really care. She's never followed the Green Pact, it just wasn't practical to do so when they could barely feed themselves as it was.
What are their interpersonal relationships like? Are they close with many people?
Lyswen's pretty shy, but once she opens up to people she becomes close to them pretty quickly. She makes a few friends in Morrowind, and eventually reconnects with her friends from back home. While she's still in Morrowind, Nibani Maesa becomes a sort of mother figure to her, and Lyswen visits a lot for her advice.
What's their relationship with their family like? Do they have one?
Her actual family? Nonexistent. Her friend family? Pretty good. She misses them, a lot. They think she's dead. She should probably resent them more for not helping her, but what can you do.
Morrowind stuff
Why were they sent to Morrowind? Were they truly guilty?
Lyswen got implicated in a murder. She wasn't involved at all, just happened to be around when it happened. The guards knew her as a local scavenger and thief, and they grabbed her for the sake of appearances. Anyone who actually saw the even could tell you she had nothing to do with it, but the local government just wanted arrests. She somehow got given to the legion, and sent to Morrowind from there.
Do they align themselves with any great houses? If yes, why?
She joins House Hlaalu. She figures out that everyone is just manipulating her pretty early on, and decides that if she's going to be a pawn in this game, she might as well play. She turns out to be a pretty effective politician, with everything that entails, but she doesn't really enjoy it.
Do they believe their self to be Nerevar reincarnated? Do you?
She doesn't know how to feel. She doesn't FEEL like nerevar, but what would that feel like, anyway?
How do they feel about the Tribunal in general? Do they trust them?
She doesn't really trust them. She does, however, crush REAL HARD on Almalexia, so she blindly trusts her at first.
Where do they go at the end of the game? Do they leave Tamriel?
She sticks around Morrowind for a bit, then goes to Solstheim. After she gets her lycanthropy cured she goes back to Valenwood to find her friends. They're ecstatic to have her back. They're all bosmer too, so she doesn't have to worry about outliving them for a long time, unless someone gets stabbed or something. They continue to steal stuff and ambush bandits, but she's able to buy them a house that they use as a base, and work more as professionals than out of survival.
Marza
Marza doesn't have a lot goin on so I'm going to skip some stuff.
General
Class General warrior stuff, nothing super fancy. Spears and heavy armor, alchemy (I really like alchemy).
Background
Is this character from their race's home province/territory? If not, what is their relationship with the region? Do they feel a connection to it? Marza is an orc, and she grew up in Cyrodiil. I haven't really decided where.
What was their childhood like? Who raised them? Do they have siblings? Marza was raised by just her mother. She's got two younger sisters who she's very protective of. She stays in contact with all of them while she's in Morrowind.
Do they worship any gods? Who? How do they feel about the gods in general? Kinda? She's got a passing respect for Malacath but isn't super religious.
What are their interpersonal relationships like? Are they close with many people? Mostly, she's close with her mother and sisters. She doesn't really trust most of the people she meets in Morrowind. She does become pretty close with Nibani Maesa though.
What's their relationship with their family like? Do they have one? I basically already answered this!
Morrowind stuff
Do they align themselves with any great houses? If yes, why? No. She doesn't trust any of them a bit.
Do they believe their self to be Nerevar reincarnated? Do you? It's a hard thing to accept, but deep down, Marza knows she is. I'm currently playing with Marza and I have a mod called Past Life Regressions that gives you flashbacks to moments experienced by past failed incarnates, and also Nerevar himself. I'd say MArza is my only OC who is definitely, fully Nerevar reincarnated.
How do they feel about the Tribunal in general? Do they trust them? Shockingly, she doesn't trust them. A lot of Marza's story involves knowing she's being used, but feeling there isn't anything she can do about it. She doesn't like the Tribunal, but feels like she has to work with them.
Where do they go at the end of the game? Do they leave Tamriel? She goes home. Idk what really happens from there.
Erstin
General
Class I think I played her as a thief, but truthfully Erstin's more of a woodsman type. She's a pretty good hunter, and she picks up lockpicking in Cyrodiil.
Background
Is this character from their race's home province/territory? If not, what is their relationship with the region? Do they feel a connection to it? She is from Skyrim! She misses it a little, but there really isn't much left for her there anymore. She feels pretty at home in Bruma, though, and that's part of the reason she spends a lot of time at Cloud Ruler Temple.
What was their childhood like? Who raised them? Do they have siblings? Erstin's an only child. She was raised by two very sweet parents, including a father who taught her to hunt. He was injured very badly on a hunt, and all of Erstin's mother's skills in herbalism couldn't save him. He died after a several days of pain. Erstin's mother died in her sleep shortly after. Their neighbors all assumed she died of grief, but Erstin found traces of nightshade in the teacup by her bed. Erstin left home for Bruma after that.
Do they worship any gods? Who? How do they feel about the gods in general? Not anymore she doesn't. She lost what faith she had after her parents' deaths. Martin restored some of it in her, but, uh, that didn't last long.
What are their interpersonal relationships like? Are they close with many people? She's pretty closed off when she first comes to Cyrodiil, and understandably so. She opens up to Martin and the blades, though. She's actually quite friendly, and very funny.
What's their relationship with their family like? Do they have one? They're dead. So, that.
Oblivion Stuff
Why are they in prison at the start of the game? How long had they been there? She got caught stealing something. She was hungry, who can blame her. She was only supposed to be there for a couple of days, that's why she was in a cell that's supposed to be empty.
What's their relationship with Martin? Are they coworkers, acquaintances, friends, partners? They are partners, in every sense of the word. They actually get Jauffre to marry them right before the Battle for Bruma. (in my imagination Martin is much younger in this universe)
How do they handle Martin's death? Who do they lean on for support, if anyone? Not well. At all. She just completely retreats into herself. Baurus gets her back to Cloud Ruler so she can be looked after by the Blades. Since she's a Septim by marriage, they consider it their duty to serve her.
Do they mantle Sheogorath? What exactly does that mean, in their case? Okay buckle up because this is complicated lmao. So fun fact, Erstin was actually pregnant when Martin died. She didn't know at the time, and by the time she realized, she didn't think it was worth telling anyone. The Elder Council hadn't ever been told that she and Martin were married, since they were planning on having a more official wedding after he was crowned. Without proof of their marriage or the amulet of kings to prove that the baby was a septim, there was no way to prove she was telling the truth. She figured the council wouldn't believe the Blades if they backed her up, since they could easily have ulterior motives. By the time Erstin enters the Shivering Isles, she's about two months pregnant. Truthfully, she doesn't expect to make it out alive. She just needs to feel useful again. After finishing the questline and taking Sheo's throne, she basically throws a cosmic temper tantrum to get Akatosh to give her Martin's soul back (an idea I stole from someone who is no longer active :( ). She's visibly pregnant at this point, and Martin is immediately like. What the fuck is going on and where the fuck am I. I should be dead. After she has the baby, she notices that they're a little... weird. Like, "why do his eyes look like that" weird. As it turns out, the baby is the new Sheogorath. tl;dr, she's pregnant when sheo goes away, the baby is the new sheo.
Do they stay in the Shivering Isles? Is it by choice? Yes, and it's technically by choice, but also Martin can't leave. She remains duchess of dementia and Martin become duke of mania. yes this is cringe shut up.
Sille
General
Class If you were to ask her, she'd say she's a priestess (which she is). Skills wise, she's adjacent to a ranger.
Background
Is this character from their race's home province/territory? If not, what is their relationship with the region? Do they feel a connection to it? Yes, but only sort of? Sille's mother is a nord and her father is a redguard. She grew up in Skyrim, and she's only been to Hammerfell once, when she was really little. She doesn't feel any strong connection to Hammerfell, besides the family she has there.
What was their childhood like? Who raised them? Do they have siblings? Sille has a younger sister, Signy. Growing up, Sille was always drawn to nature, while Signy felt a distinct discomfort when she felt too far away from town. They were close when they were little, but when they were ten and eight Signy got hurt while they were climbing trees because Sille wasn't watching her. It really caused a rift between them. Signy also resented Sille for leaving to become a priestess, and ended up leaving home herself to join the Legion.
Do they worship any gods? Who? How do they feel about the gods in general? Yes! Sille is a priestess of Kyne. I could write a whole post about what exactly that looks like, but I'll put some of the main bits here. Priestesses of Sille's "order" (not really the best term but I can't think of another one) emulate Kyne in different aspects of their lives. They are unmarried, typically, and at different stages of their lives they different figures of the maiden/matron/crone archetype: when they are younger they are Kyne prior to her marriage to Shor, once they are fully committed to their life as a priestess they are Shor's wife, and in their old age they are his widow. More significantly, they emulate The Hawk by practicing hunting as a form of devotion. They are expected to hunt regularly, partially for practical purposes, and partially as an act or worship. They also serve a practical purpose in the community, being skilled herbalists and healers. They learn ice and lightning magic, the powers of the tempest. Typically, they wear their hair long and unbound, unless practicality demands otherwise.
What are their interpersonal relationships like? Are they close with many people? Back home, besides her family, the only people Sille regularly sees are other priestesses. She becomes pretty close with a few people in Cyrodiil, though, in particular Baurus and Martin.
What's their relationship with their family like? Do they have one? She's still in contact with her parents, she doesn't live too far away and she tries to write them fairly often. She has no direct contact with Signy, who last she heard was stationed in Hammerfell. Signy writes to their parents every couple months, but never to Sille.
Oblivion Stuff
Why are they in prison at the start of the game? How long had they been there? Sille was sent to Bruma to meet with some priests at the Chapel of Talos. While she was there, someone told her about the Shrine of Kynareth, and she decided to go visit it, after getting permission to stay for a while. She had to go to the Imperial City first to get directions, though, because she didn't know where it was. She got into a drunken brawl with some random people in bar over a religious debate, and basically got thrown in the drunk tank. She was there for less than twelve hours.
What's their relationship with Martin? Are they coworkers, acquaintances, friends, partners? Definitely friends. She likes him a lot, and respects him as a priest and a leader. Frankly, she thinks being a priest of Akatosh sounds super boring, but she's not one to yuck anyone's yums.
How do they handle Martin's death? Who do they lean on for support, if anyone? I wouldn't say she handles it well, but it definitely could have gone worse. She basically throws herself into trying to heal and treat everyone hurt during the final battle. Signy ends up showing up with the Legion, and there's a whole awkward reunion. They make up a bit, though, and end up going back to Skyrim together for a while.
Sille doesn't go to the shivering isles, so I won't answer those questions.
Mailie
General
Class Idk. One handed swords, light armor, stealth, archery, restoration magic, fire spells. Whatever you'd call that.
Background
Is this character from their race's home province/territory? If not, what is their relationship with the region? Do they feel a connection to it? She is from High Rock, and she doesn't really care about it. She misses it being less cold, though. Also good wine.
What was their childhood like? Who raised them? Do they have siblings? Mailie's family is somewhere between high-ranking aristocrats and low-ranking nobles. They have a lot of money, but not a lot of land or political clout. For the last couple of generations, they've really been trying to improve their station, and Mailie's parents were borderline obsessed with her marrying well and moving them up in the world. Mailie had a younger brother, Pierre. He was about ten years younger than her, and was always a sickly child. For somewhat complicated thalmor-related reasons that will sound weirdly familiar to anyone who's read the Anastasia Romanov Royal Diaries book, the family doctor had to leave very suddenly, and Pierre died not long after of some disease. Mailie always blamed the thalmor for it. Instead of mourning their son in the way Mailie would have liked, her parents redoubled their efforts to shape Mailie into the perfect bride for any random nobleman willing to take a chance on their family. Mailie just couldn't deal with it anymore, and she ran away in the middle of the night.
Do they worship any gods? Who? How do they feel about the gods in general? It's sort of complicated. Mailie's parents practice religion for appearances, so she never felt any real connection to the gods. She respects and honors Nocturnal in her role as a Nightingale, but since Nocturnal doesn't ask for or want worship, Mailie isn't super dedicated to it or anything. She'll honor any deity who can get her what she needs, unless she just thinks they're evil. *cough* moldy balls *cough*
What are their interpersonal relationships like? Are they close with many people? She's more than a bit stuck up and self-important when she first goes to Skyrim, so she can be a bit abrasive at first. She's actually very sweet and funny though, so once she gets over herself she's very likeable.
What's their relationship with their family like? Do they have one? She doesn't talk to her parents anymore. They definitely know at this point that she's alive and the Dragonborn, but she wants nothing to do with them right now.
Skyrim Stuff
Were they trying to cross the border? Why? Yes, She was just trying to get into Skyrim. She figured it was the last place her parents would look for her.
Do they pick a side in the Civil War? Absolutely not. She agrees with the Stormcloaks to the extent that she doesn't think the empire has any business controlling Skyrim, but she absolutely hates Ulfric. Like everything about him. He tries to get her to join the rebellion at some point, btu she flat out refuses him. She tells him that the Skyrim he envisions is not one she can reconcile herself with.
Do they kill Paarthurnax? Why? No. He's too important an ally for that.
What do they do at the war meeting? How does it go? Do they maintain neutrality? She maintains neutrality as much as she can. Despite her hatred for politics, she's actually pretty good at them. All that diplomacy training paid off. She doesn't let the empire get the Rift, though. She can't risk increased scrutiny on the Thieves' Guild.
How do they feel about their position as Dragonborn? Do they embrace the role? Does it terrify them? Do they take advantage of it? Mixed feelings. The responsibility is just too much sometimes, but she actually feels useful for the first time in her life.
Dawnguard or Volkihar Clan? If they choose the Volkihar, do they ever reverse their vampirism? Dawnguard. Being a werewolf is bad enough. The only reason she hasn't cured her lycanthropy is because she doesn't want Aela to be the only member of the Circle who carries it. She eventually helps find a new member who's willing to carry it though, and then cures herself.
How do they feel about Miraak? Is he a villain to them, or a tragic figure? She feels sorry for him. Being beholden to a daedric prince for thousands of years seems rough. She thanks her lucky stars that Nocturnal is relatively chill. She still doesn't like Miraak, though, and she's happy to kill him.
Ardalie
General
Class Conjuration and destruction mage, and budding necromancer.
Background
Is this character from their race's home province/territory? If not, what is their relationship with the region? Do they feel a connection to it? Ardalie grew up in Summerset, and she doesn't know how to feel about it. She liked her life there, but it was tainted with lies. She can't ever go back.
What was their childhood like? Who raised them? Do they have siblings? She's an only child, was raised by pretty normal parents. Her father was a scholar and her mother was some kind of local politician. She was raised to join the Thalmor, it was just expected of her.
Do they worship any gods? Who? How do they feel about the gods in general? She did worship the elven pantheon, but not anymore. She is thoroughly disillusioned with every aspect of Altmer life.
What are their interpersonal relationships like? Are they close with many people? She's close with Lucien (Flavius), Serana, and her friends from the Arcane university.
What's their relationship with their family like? Do they have one? Nonexistent. She honestly hopes they think she's dead. It would be easier.
Skyrim Stuff
Were they trying to cross the border? Why? No, she wasn't caught at the border at all. She was sent to the Thalmor embassy as her first real assignment. They gave her the bs "learn about the civil war" quest that the alternate start mod gives you because they wanted her out of her hair. It was basically some light hazing. She went to Helgen and saw Alduin attack, and that's how she got thrown into the main quest. Throughout her travels she witnesses firsthand how awful the Thalmor truly are, and realizes that she can't be associated with them. She burns her robes and vows to destroy them.
Do they pick a side in the Civil War? She joins the Stormcloaks just to stick it to the Thalmor. She can't wait to see the look on Elenwen's face when she no longer has power in Skyrim.
Do they kill Paarthurnax? Why? No, she doesn't really spend any time with Delphine than she has too, and is never asked to. She wouldn't have anyway. If she believes in second chances for herself, she has to believe in them for other people.
What do they do at the war meeting? How does it go? Do they maintain neutrality? There isn't a war meeting for her because the Stormcloaks have already taken Whiterun by the time they need to catch Odahviing.
How do they feel about their position as Dragonborn? Do they embrace the role? Does it terrify them? Do they take advantage of it? She doesn't like the attention, but she does like the added power. She doesn't like to think about the implications, and has no interest in being anyone's political puppet.
Dawnguard or Volkihar Clan? If they choose the Volkihar, do they ever reverse their vampirism? Volkihar Clan. She sees Serana's skill with necromancy and is immediately sold. She doesn't get cured.
How do they feel about Miraak? Is he a villain to them, or a tragic figure? I wouldn't say Ardalie views him as a villain, but she thinks killing him is necessary. She definitely feels a little bad for him though.
ahhhh thank you so much! I've had the busiest week so thank you for your patience!!!

Paper代写:The Calatrava
Calatrava became famous for the design of bridge buildings, and his various and strange forms, which are similar to those of alien visitors, are the sketches of nature and the pulse of life. Like a poet, all poetry celebrates nature, which is his bionics art, which has no equal charm.
Since the 1980s, both postmodernism and structuralism have launched the revolution of aesthetic values with ugly, strange and irrational. Hence, all kinds of strange, absurd and strange buildings spring up like mushrooms. But gradually, people started to become more and more uncomfortable from the original freshness to the later difficulty in accepting, and the architecture lost its original beauty. Calatrava, on the other hand, also USES his peculiar and unusual architecture to bring us back to the beauty, especially the bionic architecture created by natural law, which is in contrast with nature and brings fresh wind to the architecture.
He is one of nature's disciples, use material heap to build a house like a bird, he had a heart to build a bridge, so all of the buildings have the shadow of the arch bridge, his fascination with the dynamic beauty of all things, for construction on the wings to fly, he ignored the curve of the building structure, the building toward the sky there is no gravity, such is his, unique architectural master calatrava.
In 2001, calatrava's first work in the United States was an extension of the art gallery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. To exploit the natural beauty of the location, calatrava has put the building on the water. He walked along the avenue in the direction of the newly built up a index bridge, white concrete material of pylon incisively and vividly highlights the bold temperament, outdoor shutter shade, like a leaf fine feathers, as the transfer of the day time, the feelings of the blink also ripples in this piece of feathers, it will always follow the sun to adjust own point of view, as a spiritual quietly trembling in the quiet lake in the city.
If too many people aren't familiar with the buildings above, let's take a look at another landmark building - the Athens Olympic stadium.
With the world's six billion people cheering and the Olympics returning to their native land, calatrava turned that dream into an interpretation of nature's language. Calatrava's design is to add two large arch beams 304 meters long and 80 meters high to the original venue, and to use steel cables to pull up the fiberboard roof with a total area of over 10,000 square meters and a total weight of 16,000 tons. Calatrava called the project the "Olympic dream," and it transformed the 20-year old stadium. Two steel domes span the top of the course, and translucent glass is suspended above the seating area to allow sunlight to enter and keep out the heat. Calatrava hopes that this building, made of steel, concrete, with views and the light of Athens, will give an unforgettable image and inspire the Olympic spirit. The entire home pavilion is inspired by Byzantine architecture, with domes and blue-and-white tones, all from the Aegean sea. The colors of the sea, peaceful Greece, and green buildings have shocked the world. This is the natural beauty of calatrava's architecture.
Calatrava, an architect and an engineer, believed that beauty could be expressed by mechanical engineering, while in nature, the beauty of the wood bird and insect forms also had an amazing mechanical efficiency. His design inspiration comes from nature, the vertebrae of animals, feathers, even the patterns of animals' growth are played by him, and he even USES human body language harmoniously in architecture.
Bionics, however popular, does not seem to have much to do with architecture. We have seen bionic furniture, they all have certain scale, but the building is piled up is the track of the firmament, what this needs is a kind of adventurous spirit and innovative will. In this process, calatrava integrates the solution of architectural functional problems with the dreamlike expression of his works with his unique ability to reconcile things, providing us with new ways to improve the city, landscape and human beings themselves.
For example, the contour of birds is the shape of buildings in the train station of sallas in France. He made full use of the structural principle of animal bones and endowed this station with the dynamic beauty of flying by the way of static expression. A bird, saw it take off, this great architect fixed it in this moment of dynamic beauty, so the building opened its wings and began to fly.
For another example, in the erstine warehouse, the gate of the warehouse adopts the graceful cantilever design, and the shape of the door seems to be the facial expression when a person smiles, which gradually changes with the opening of the door. It is easy to see from the above examples that whatever is given by nature, whether animals or people themselves, is the most magnificent coat of calatrava architecture.
People always say: life is not lack of beauty, but the lack of eyes to discover beauty. Can we understand that the building is not necessarily ugly, but our vision is not beautiful and vivid structure.
As the avant-garde usually put it: "new things don't appear out of thin air, new designs often come from a comprehensive understanding of history and life." Calatrava USES the movement of human body to reexplore the basic elements of architecture. In fact, in the whole design process of architecture, the natural support is static, and the presentation of the final results is also static. The only thing that is moving is actually the designer himself, whether it is the emergence of inspiration or physical action. Like the creator, he used his own inspiration to support the bridge between nature and artistic beauty, making everything impossible to become a reality.
Therefore, we can't help but think about what a successful designer should rely on, whether it is conforming to conventions or novelty. In fact, the fresh air we breathe every day has already given us the answer, that is, as long as we follow the laws of nature, existence is reasonable and there is infinite hope.
Like calatrava, there are many ways to "survive" by talking to nature and building.
If the soaring architecture were not the fluttering of the birds, we might not see the miracle of the sallas; If the twisted building weren't for the human body's one turn, we wouldn't see its 360-degree stunning. Design needs inspiration, and the most inspired place is endless nature. If we really learn anything from calatrava, it is to make the song of nature more violent.

Enemy: Clockwork
Someone He Tends to Misjudge: Griffith, Alex sees him as grumpy and pushy, not seeing the actual care that he feels for the rebellion
Person Who Tends to Misjudge Him: Griffith, the older man sees Alex as a liability and a child
Who Does He Rely On For Advice and Emotional Support: Hamill, who acts as the word of reason for many of the characters
Who Does He Support: Elliott Erstin, who in his rushed sense of time needs a minute to slow down and talk with someone willing to listen, like Alex
Psychological Issues: mild depression, anxiety, low self esteem (despite all this he is an optimist)
Most Comfortable When: hanging out with friends or writing alone
Most Uncomfortable When: facing rough challenges publicly, when responsible for others, when put in charge of certain tasks
Prejudices: he grows to hate people from The Other Side due to their affiliation with Clockwork
How Does He React to Change or Conflict: He has a hard time processing at first, but finds it hard to stand against the change if he needs to. He lives in his own world a lot of the time and never really acts on his desires for change.
Delusions: When he first arrived in Ellevand he expected it to be a place of magic and wonder where he could finally be away from the problems at home. A place that he could live life as he wanted to without having to work or worry, but he was wrong. Ellevand was having his own crisis, and to everyone’s surprise he was at the center of it. So rather than escaping to a land of fantasy, Alex ends up on the run from leader of the Other Side, Clockwork, who clearly wants him dead.

Anime Update 58
Dragon Ball - Very little progress in terms of moving the plot along was made in this episode coming off the end of last one - it was all about establishing our new villain, the Great Demon King Piccolo. Despite the silly instrument-based name, he is already a very, VERY fearsome, intriguing, positively sinister villain. Tien was a great antagonist for filling Tao’s shoes, but Piccolo starts on his way to surpassing Tao with his first appearance alone. The build-up given to him through Roshi’s backstory was great; this evil monster ravaging the world, massacring a bunch of martial artists, and defeating the Master of said martial artists, whose only surviving pupils were teenage Roshi and Shen, really put so much perspective into what shaped them into the people they became, with Shen renouncing his faith in morality and honor, while Roshi sought to follow in old master’s footsteps and even surpass him. That King Piccolo got imprisoned by the evil containment wave inside a rice cooker of all things was classic Toriyama, and if the rice cooker was retrieved from the depths of the sea, of fucking course it had to be Emperor Pilaf who did so. Pilaf, Mai, and Shuu have trapped themselves into answering to a tyrant far more evil and powerful than anything they were prepared to deal with, and that’s sure to make things very fun.
Love, Chunibyo, and Other Delusions - Really not much to say on this episode except that it’s where the delusions of love that the series title refers to finally starts to come into play. Rikka is developing romantic feelings for Yuta, Yuta is denying that Rikka could possibly feel that way about him or that he returns those feelings, and Sunohara is trying to woo Kumin but getting nowhere.
My-Otome - Plans and counterplans are being made as Nagi and John Smith continue to try and harness the power they intend to start a war with, Tomoe is still treating her “friend” abusively and stalking Arika and her friends, Azwad is disgraced and diminished by the Black Valley’s ruler, Mashiro still hasn’t gotten out of her funk, Nina starts spending quality time with Erstin for some reason, and Arika just might be the real Princess Mashiro Woodbloom due to having the heirloom that signifies a royal bloodline (but given that the infant princess in flashbacks clearly has Nina’s hair color, I don’t buy this misdirect for a second.) And those were the good parts of the episode. The not so good parts had to do with Arika struggling with the feelings she’s developed for Sergay, that she is in love with him. Just....WHY? Not only why would they push romantic drama between a young girl and a grown man, but what in-universe reason does Arika possibly have for crushing on a dude who’s only shown her the barest minimum of common decency but has otherwise talked down to her and treated her like shit at every turn? There’s just no sensible explanation, so it’s the part of the story that’s still making me wince any time it comes up. Arika, you can do so much better. And if that wasn’t insulting enough, the episode ends at a point of Arika is in danger of getting gang-raped by some random thugs!
Assassination Classroom S2 - The opening part of this episode was kind of annoying because in it’s focus on Isogai as he’s working his part time job, the internal thoughts of the other E Class students kept repeating “HE’S PRINCE CHARMING!” even though the text on the screen was clearly saying something else. But it didn’t take long for the episode to pick itself up when Gakushu challenged Isogai and his friends to a game of Pole Topping at the school’s sports festival. Much like Shogi in March Comes In Like A Lion, I don’t understand the rules of this game and how it’s played, but the series manages to make me invested in it’s outcome. With Isogai displaying some great leadership skills for his team and playing with Korosensei’s prep teaching in mind, E Class manages to beat Asano with a strategy he’d overlooked, securing another victory for all the school to see. What wasn’t so pleasant to see was Gakuho inviting the American transfers that his son used for his team to try and beat him up, savagely beating them down instead, recalling how he’d learned to weaponize the fear of defeat and humiliation when he beat his old judo master, and using all this as a way to intimidate his son, to instill that same fear into him as consequence for being a loser. God, why is this man so fucking SCARY? He just gets worse every time we see him, really building the tension for when E Class faces his wrath.
Vinland Saga - Not too much of an impression was made by this episode, which stands at the series’ halfway mark, other than Askeladd going to Wales seeking aid in building a strong Viking army of his own for purposes that still aren’t entirely clear. He also seems keen on adopting Prince Canute and molding him in his preferred way since he can tell just from looking at his eyes that he’s presently unfit to be a great king and is merely soft, sheltered political fodder for other great men around him. Canute is honestly kind of adorable in his strange, soft femboy way, even though he’s barely spoken a word at this point. The final scene of the episode promised things are to be kicked into high gear for the second half, with Askeladd’s group, now headed by an old Britannian ex-noble, is ambushed by an attack eerily similar to the one that killed Thors, which clearly gets Thorfinn set out for blood, and we’re shown where every prominent character is at this time, including Uncle Leif, who’s grown older and wearier in his fruitless search for Thorfinn. I am very worried for him now.
Magic Knight Rayearth - I was looking forward to this episode given the title about Beast Summoner Ascot’s trap, but it honestly kind of sucked. The “trap” in question is one I’ve seen used plenty of times before - Ascot summons a beast that can turn into a small, cute, seemingly friendly creature for fooling the Magic Knights but it’s actually a deadly monster. Sailor Moon used this trope in it’s fifth episode! Hikaru’s insistence on calling it “Hikari” and using it like a replacement for her pet back home was also strange. Hikari’s very existence kind of came out of left field back when the girls sought the Escudo beneath the lake, and Hikaru has seemed hung up on him ever since. This idiot plot is predictable and ends in the way you’d figure it would, with Hikaru having to put the savage Hikari down in order to save “my friend, Umi!” This makes the third monster friend that the Magic Knights have taken from Ascot, and the third time we have to watch him cry about it. Look, I like Ascot, and he’s clearly meant to be sympathetic to the audience, but I’m finding myself sympathizing with him a bit TOO much. Seeing this poor lonely kid watch the closest companions he’s ever had die and be left a sobbing wreck over it just isn’t fun to watch when done repeatedly. And Hikaru’s own crying over what she had to do was clearly meant to be where the episode stopped, but instead they added a scene of the girls marking a grave for Hikari and then moving on with “we must save Cephiro!”, ending the episode in a very abrupt way just as icing on the half-baked cake. Clearly not the anime on a better day.
A Place Further Than The Universe - Kimari and Shirase still have time before they can actually embark on their voyage to Antarctica, and in that time Kimari is getting to work on raising some money of her own as she seeks a part time job that will accomplish this. There are some misunderstandings between the girls, some humorous (Shirase proposing a job to Kimari that was actually skeevier than she’d realized) and some more serious (Shirase getting the false impression that Kimari doubts her plans and that her goal can be met), but it all goes well when they meet Hinata Miyake, an upbeat, enthusiastic, somewhat scatterbrained teen prodigy who works at the convenience store and wants in on this trip to Antarctica too. The episode then goes crazy when the three girls go to Kabukichō, Tokyo to try to sneak aboard the exhibition through some cockamamie scheme that predictably does not go right and gets them chased through the streets, which actually gives Kimari a thrilling adrenaline rush. Shirase ends up unable to convince the two older girls from the expedition crew to let them come, and gets demoted from group leadership position by her two friends as result. Ouch. Back to the drawing board, Shirase! At least the ED credits song is still a jam.
AND
When They Cry: Higurashi - Started my rewatch of this horror anime classic with the first four episode arc, the “Spirited Away By The Demon” chapter. I only want to touch upon those episodes right now because they really do set the mood for the whole series and how sublime they are in how they gradually build the mystery, the tension, the suspense, the paranoia, the fear, the sheer horror of what happens in the end...just still holds up really, really well. If the creepy theme song and opening it up with Keichi bludgeoning Mion and Rena to death didn’t give it away, the first episode would honestly be an early instance of Stealth Horror for the audience, as it’s so light-hearted and breezy and juvenile until the dark history behind this village gets brought in pretty much completely out of the blue and from there we get secrets uncovered, conspiracies speculated about, murder and disappearance at the Cotton Drifting Festival, legends of a vengeful deity named Oyashiro and his curse that accompanies this, a dirty cop questioning Keichi and all that’s going on around him, Keichi’s own new friends starting to act strange and like they have something to hide and want to take him off the trail to finding out what, and Keichi’s gradual descent into fearful, paranoid, erratic, ultimately violent madness that takes his two friends’ lives and his own life as well. The aura hanging over this story is one of anxious uncertainty and heart-pounding dread, with you, along with Keichi as the POV character, never being sure who and what to trust or not trust, what’s genuine and what isn’t, who’s keeping deep dark secrets and might have it out for him should he stumble upon truths not meant to be uncovered, and it’s just so fucking great at creating atmosphere and bringing Hinamizawa to unsettling, demonic life. While obviously the series goes on to tell a bigger, grander narrative from here, this arc works the best as a self contained ghost story that services the larger series narrative just as well as the larger series narrative services it - ending on Keichi’s note that states his dying wish for someone to uncover the whole truth about the sinister events going on in Hinamizawa, almost as though it’s a plea to the viewer to keep watching, is a brilliant way to truly officially start us off on our journey through the series, and later developments in the Answer Arc that coincides with this Question Arc turn literally everything about what you saw playing out here on it’s head, particularly changing your view of who the scary, psychotic, murderous monster of the story truly was (spoiler: it’s the protagonist himself!) It’s just ingeniously done all around, and I cannot see the new remake/reboot series coming anywhere close to topping it.
