Is there a scene in the novel where Jiggy was looking like he was determining "there's no other choice" in koi tower before killing nmj? I saw a jgy fan said wwx as unreliable narrator since he "judge" jgy taunting nmj when he confronted him about XY as deliberate, whereas the fan thinks jgy didn't, and mention about a scene afterward where jgy being "helpless" before choosing to kill nmj.

I don't remember such a scene in the novel. But perhaps I'm just not being attentive. So is there really?

I don’t know what scene was being referenced, but it’s safe to say that nothing Jin Guangyao says until Guanyin Temple is true, and anything he says about his motivations until he discovers that he’s been played by Nie Huaisang is questionable at best. Wei Wuxian is not the narrator of mdzs, so his opinion of jgy’s morality or actions doesn’t account for whether or not jgy’s actions were right or wrong or whether he “meant” them. Jin Guangyao is a master gaslighter and we are shown this explicitly through in his introduction into the book, so I see no reason to jump through hoops to find which of his lies are total lies or half-truths. It all leads to the same place of justifying his need to murder people he doesn’t like. But whether or not a jgy stan thinks that jgy “wanted” to kill Nie Mingjue, he definitely wanted to dismember nmj’s body and keep his head as a trophy. Sounds like a choice he chose to make and not one where he was “helplessly” forced to do it, don’t it?

mdzs, and especially the cql, sit at such a unique place where they are both the prequel and sequel to themselves which makes it such a uniquely cursed work. like it has all the trappings of both in all the best (see worst ways). it starts at the end but also the end is only the beginning. half the characters that we meet (especially in the cql where the flashback starts and mercilessly does Not stop and there's this Growing Sense Of Dread the longer it goes and the worse things get) are dead from the start-they were dead before we even met them! there's no fixing what happens, no changing it-and yet because it's also a sequel to itself there is a new beginning and the story does keep going after it's done and I just think that's neat

i cannot stress this enough:

nie mingjue tried to kill jin guangyao, both before and after he died, but nmj’s reasons for trying to kill jgy never included “jin guangyao killed him.”

nmj never knew that jgy played a part in his death.

he was generally paranoid, but there is no indication that he had any real, concrete information about anything jgy was dealing with. nmj never actually knew anything about what jgy was doing.

he did not know that jgy had done anything to the music, and he had no reason to believe that the progression of his qi instability was anything other than natural. we don’t see any indication that he even acknowledged that it was getting worse.

moreover, nmj tried to kill jgy multiple times BEFORE he died, even before jgy started playing for him. even after jgy was playing for him, what finally set off nmj’s fatal qi deviation was not, in fact, the revelation that jgy was trying to kill him, but overhearing jgy’s private comment to xichen that nmj was treating jgy poorly. that was what sent him into his fatal, paranoid rage.

i quite wish slash hope jgy (i’m talking about him because he’s my #1 boy but this also goes for jc and xy and probably every character that inspires such takes) didn’t have the fandom just... regurgitating the most random takes and/or treating them as gospel and Such Good, Insightful Meta because it agrees with their Vibe Read of jgy, when said Vibe Read is 99% rooted in fandom and maybe 1% in zanzan’s evil smiles, and Very Little, If At All, rooted in the things that happen in canon.

this fic is so goddamn weird. I care more about mianmian and nmj than wwx. getting all emotional about mianmian and the two sentences about her family, and then there’s this line about nmj volunteering with kids that actually made me cry but I just find this wwx annoying. he’s got nothing going on besides being a college student and missing his family and all he does is make stupid jokes and then cry.

For cql I think jgy actually is fine with dying a heroic death and tries to on several occasions. What he's not fine with is dying a shameful or meaningless death, especially as a young person who has yet to make a mark on the world, and he does a lot to avoid this, sometimes even seeking the former.
