I saw another of these floating around that was...wrong, so I'm putting this together so people can keep characters' ages straight more easily. I'm not listing everyone, obviously, but characters whose ages get misstated most often.
Does this match up with the wiki or the Ultimanias? Absolutely not! The Ultimania says that Lucrecia was pregnant for three years! The wiki says that Vincent was shot after Sephiroth was born, even though Lucrecia was still pregnant when it happened! The source material, however, is 99.99% internally consistent with regard to the timeline, so I go with that, and that's what we're going by here.
Jenova Project S (1977 · [ μ ] – εγλ 1977)
Vincent: 26-27 (October 13, 1950)
Lucrecia: 27-28 (July 22, presumed 1949 or 1950)
Hojo: 32 (born 1945)
Pre-Crisis Core (2000 · [ μ ] – εγλ 2000)
Genesis: 23 (born early 1977, see first link below)
Sephiroth: 22-23 (born in late 1977, probably Christmas)
Angeal: 21-22 (born late 1977/early 1978, see first link above)
Zack: 16 (born in 1984)
Cloud: 14 (August 11, 1986)
Aerith: 15 (February 2, 1985)
Nibelheim Incident (October 2002 · [ ν ] – εγλ 0002)
Genesis: 25
Sephiroth: 24-25
Angeal: 23-24
Zack: 18
Cloud: 16
Aerith: 17
The Crisis (December 2007 · [ ν ] – εγλ 0007)
Genesis: 30-31
Sephiroth: 30 (physically ~25)
Angeal: 29-30
Zack: 23
Cloud: 21
Aerith: 22
Vincent: 57 (physically 27)
Lucrecia: 57-58 (physically ~34)
Hojo: 62
Advent Children (2009 · [ ν ] – εγλ 0008)
Genesis: 32-33 (physically ~30)
Sephiroth: 32 (physically ~25)
Cloud: 23
Vincent: 59 (physically 27)
Dirge of Cerberus (2010 · [ ν ] – εγλ 0010)
Genesis: 33-34 (physically ~30)
Cloud: 24
Vincent: 60 (physically 27)
Lucrecia: 60-61 (physically 34)
Hojo: 65 (physically nonexistent)
Edited April 2024, when Hojo's age was canonized by the Rebirth Ultimania.

Alright done with 7Rebirth, I'll look through whatever clips I got that aren't being restricted by Square Enix that might be fun to show here later.
I liked it! Much better than 7Remake. Rebirth also does the dumb cosmic destiny/timeline stuff in the last chapter like Remake which really feels out of place with FF7's original themes, and some of the changes are strange (I know the finale will be controversial) but I did enjoy all the little ways they expanded on the original by connecting the dots the original had.
One good example is Yuffie going from Steal Materia and get Motion Sick: The Character to the excitable little sister figure to Cloud with a traumatic past as a child soldier during the war between Midgar and Wutai, who's always out to grab Materia because Wutai needs weaponry to be able to defend itself against Shinra, who annihilated it last time with its mech army.
The combat feels great, unlike Remake's. It can still get frustrating when playing glass cannons like Aerith that get bounced around by enemies, but the addition of parrying (real parrying, not that dumb dodge roll in Remake) and air combat as well as speeding everyone up and designing enemies to be more interactive with attacks you can read and dodge/counter rather than waves of constant damage like Bahamut in Remake make this a game I would actually play again for the sake of playing it and doing the hard mode challenges, as opposed to just being there for the story. Cait Sith, Yuffie, and Red XIII are all fun and creative designs, and Cloud's rework made him way more fun to play too. Cid and Vincent are going to go wild in the 3rd game, especially after the two secret characters in Rebirth are so damn cool to use.
What didn't upgrade in gameplay were the minigames. God there were too many minigames, and most of them felt awful to just okay to play, with the exception of Queen's Blood, which I found highly enjoyable and its Yugioh parody storyline to be real funny.
I'm a fan of the Remake trilogy now. I'm excited to see where the third game goes.
I'll do Rebirth all again in Hard mode, I had that much of a good time. If they announce a Cid/Vincent DLC like what Remake did with Yuffie, i'd go for it in a heartbeat.

What did Sephiroth want in the ending of Rebirth?
*spoilers of FF7 Rebirth and other FF7 stuff beware*
Tumblr media
I was inspired by Maximilian Dood on Spoiler Mode and @flying-dishcloth's question on my Cloud post.
But yeah-
What did Sephiroth want?
Since Remake I was convinced that Aerith's death wouldn't happen because it's only when Aerith was in the Lifestream that she was capable of using Holy AND the Lifestream to stop Meteor. And that Aerith knew that she had to die save the Planet. Personally if I was Sephiroth I would put her in a coma instead of it happening to Cloud. With her out of commission it would a lot easier for my evil schemes.
But that's not what happened. Aerith's spoiler memories were taken by the Whispers and she died.
Say what you want about her being a hallucination, a spirit, or alive in another timeline. But here in the beagle Stamp timeline, Aerith is dead.
This moment of her death, is the most iconic part of FF7. Most people know this before they even know what Final Fantasy even is.
This moment is what Sephiroth calls, the Confluence of Worlds.
It's pretty meta thing.
In universe, when Sephiroth is going on and about emotions and is feelings the emotions of multiple worlds.
But he's also calling out us and how we all feel about this moment.
(I am not saying Sephiroth is breaking the fourth wall and is directly saying "Ah yes this was the sad part of Final Fantasy 7 suck it players." It's just meta commentary.)
Sephiroth calls out Loss in particular. Which is what the main theme of the original FF7 was. All the main characters experience loss and it's the loss of Aerith that's impacted people for almost 30 years now.
This moment is the confluence of everyone's grief and for Sephiroth, a being that seems to exist in an omnipresent state now, is what he wants. He's getting power from dying world's emotions. Their despair. So theoretically, Sephiroth could use the black materia he has and use this loss and despair and win.
And then Cloud kinda ruins it.
Sephiroth has been trying to get as much emotional pain as he can at Cloud, unravelling his fragile mind.
For this moment where Cloud breaks down. And he does-
But Cloud instead of having an emotional and psychological breakdown, just hallucinates and represses the fact that Aerith is dead.
I don't think Sephiroth wanted that.
Yes Sephiroth has been telling Cloud he has no emotions, but he's been telling Cloud to feel rage. He wants Cloud to feel despair.
But Cloud's mind this time around can't take this and can't accept that Aerith is dead. So any emotions he should be feeling, he now isn't.
No grief filled rage. No despair.
In an ironic twist of fate, Cloud is now more hollow than he ever was in the OG is he's desperate to not face the truth.
He can never understand with 'clouded eyes' afterall.
So yeah in Part 3 I bet that Sephiroth is going to have another Reunion of Confluencing emotions at the Northern Crater because Cloud repressing Aerith's death now just means that Cloud will break further- probably shatter actually when Sephiroth forces him to see Sephiroth's version of the truth.
if anyone has anything else to add, then please do so!

FF7 Rebirth Spoilers - Zack's situation
I'm pretty sure that both Aeriths were killed in Zack and Cloud's timelines but I'm confused about Zack's dead or alive status. Judging on what we saw, I'd say alive?
In Zack's timeline, Marlene says when Aerith wakes up, Sephiroth will kill her. When the trailers launched, I thought Marlene had a vision about the actual incident in the original - aka Aerith in Cloud's timeline praying at the altar. But, now I'm sure she was referring to the comatose Aerith in their timeline.
Tumblr media
And while Zack was away, Aerith "woke up" and put on her clothes and then woke the comatose Cloud from the wheelchair for their dream date thing at the end of the world.
Tumblr media
She takes him to the church, says her goodbye and gives him the white materia before Sephiroth arrives to kill her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zack was outside the church before this but got pushed away but breaks free and ends up in a white space surrounded by fallen petals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think this has something to do with what Aerith quoted about "following the flowers" in part one when she's surrounded by whispers and is talking to them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After Zack/Cloud's joint fight, Sephiroth sends Zack back to his timeline which is being destroyed by the meteor. But then...he just breaks through the floor??
Tumblr media
There's a green light when fate is seemingly changed and it's here with Zack and also it lights up Cloud's sword when he stops Sephiroth's blade at the altar.
Tumblr media
But after that, Zack wakes up at the church and somehow everything's intact. I think Aerith is now dead in both timelines, but where the hell is Zack at the end? Is he also just dead, or is this a new timeline? It makes sense Aerith can "walk" through the lifestream after death (and not become one in a huge soul soup) because she's a Cetra. But I'm guessing Zack isn't in the lifestream at the end - but is in another timeline???
I don't know.
Thoughts? I don't know what to think about the multiverse stuff.

hi i have a question. is the ff7 compilation considered canon to the og and the remake?
Contrary what hardline OG fans will tell you, YES. Though there are occasional contradictory scenes and moments across the Compilation. For example, Before Crisis and The Last Order depict the Nibelheim Incident somewhat differently in terms of how certain encounters and outcomes play out. But with that said, Before Crisis, First Soldier, Crisis Core, Advent Children, and Dirge of Cerberus are all direct prequel/sequels to the original FFVII.
As for Remake, it is also part of Compilation canon, but is following a different timeline/dimension. I'm currently considering it a sequel to Advent Children and Dirge, depending on how the plot goes. Regardless, the events of Crisis Core still took place before Remake. There's just some wonky stuff going on with the various timelines splitting apart thanks to Sephiroth's meddling. I think things will become a lot clearer in Rebirth.

FF7 Rebirth: 40% a good game, 60% a waste of my time
The short of it is that FF7 Rebirth feels like its just taking a longer route to get to the exact same places as the original, and while its highs are extremely high for the most part it's an exhausting game full of padding designed to mask the fact that there really wasn't enough to do to justify the decision to split this into three full-length games with a triple A price tags.
It didn't take its unique premise far enough to justify the changes it makes, and it deviates too far from the original premise to feel like a satisfying remake. The new elements feel half-hearted, the new stuff is great, it's a really mixed bag.
The long of it is this;
It took me awhile to figure out why I liked Scott Pilgrim Takes Off but had so many issues with Final Fantasy 7 Remake (and later, Rebirth). The two have similar premises; through what appears to be time travel, one (or more) of the main characters affect the timeline to try and get a different result than the one they ended up with. They're both kinda sequels to the original property designed to build off your pre-existing knowledge and give you a new but similar experience to the one you already had. So... why'd I like one, but not the other?
Eventually, it hit me. Because Takes Off booted the titular Scott from the main story, his love interest - Ramona Flowers - took center stage. The story had been disrupted in such a way that not only were events forced to play out incredibly differently, but because they did the characters were able to grow and address their relationships with each other in new, different ways - and we as the audience gained new or greater understandings of them because of it.
I like new characters I never gave a second thought to before because I saw different sides of them, and I feel like the original story was enhanced for having Takes Off as a kinda-sequel. Both of those things were only possible via the time travel plot - you could not have gotten the same effect by merely expanding the original Scott Pilgrim, because it would have made the narrative far more convoluted. Scott could not defeat Ramona's exes and Ramona could not have reconciled with them in the same plot.
So then the question becomes - are the time travel, flash forwards and alternate continuities in Rebirth worth it? Do I feel like FF7 is improved or enhanced for having them? Do I feel like I've learnt more about the characters, or that they've learnt more about themselves? Are 7 Rebirth's time shenanigans an earnest attempt to revisit the same characters through a very different lens under very different circumstances to reach a greater understanding of the original source material?
Well, no. The addition of those elements to FF7 Rebirth feel like the devs decided they had to do something different to the original 7's main narrative, but had absolutely nothing to say. They wanted to acknowledge that almost everyone knows their plot and wink at the audience over it, but didn't have the guts to go wildly off course. The main vibe I get is that we're taking more convoluted steps to get to roughly the same location - SE is jangling shiny objects in front of my face and throwing mystery boxes at me in the hopes that I'll open them, but at the end of the day despite all the whispers, the multiple timelines and the questions about what on earth Sephiroth's new plan could possibly be, I have reached no greater understanding about any of these characters or the original plot for having wasted my time on this.
And that has problems - Rebirth knows it doesn't have a lot of plot twists, so it assumes you already know what the Big Ones are and doesn't even bother trying to maintain the mystery or build an engaging narrative around them. You know Cloud thinks he's Zack, you know Aerith dies - why bother keeping them a secret when we could spend that time calling back to Crisis Core, bouncing in and out of 'the Zack timeline' or wondering if maaaaybe Aerith might survive this time? (Hilariously, it calls back to Crisis Core incorrectly - that is not degradation, that is not what degradation does).
Cloud really does end up feeling like a puppet - while he never had agency, Rebirth doesn't even bother pretending. Cloud's mental instability and Sephiroth's manipulations are dragged out over tens of hours instead of a few shocking scenes, so when the game tries to cash in the intended shock factor of those scenes I felt like I'd already seen everything in them happen in the game at least once before. If we really are supposed to have the illusion of being able to defy fate, surely Cloud attempting to kill Tifa could have resulted in some changes that might have resulted in a different outcome at the Temple of the Ancients...?
No, of course not. That would be too big a change to make, and Tifa moves on past Cloud's murder attempt with assurances she believes in him. She's absolutely fine getting into an enclosed space with him, alone, and still has no issue keeping the love triangle going. Was there any point to including a new murder attempt at all, beyond showing Sephiroth can control Cloud? The thing we already knew he could do?
At the end of the day, nothing really changes. Fate holds, and Cloud's story feels like a casualty in his own game. If Rebirth's plot deviated meaningfully enough from the original that the player figuring out what happened early felt worthwhile or meaningful that wouldn't bother me, but it doesn't - so it just feels like one of gaming's most effective rugpulls was dismantled so the player could get to see Zack and Sephiroth more often.
That's it in general - if I felt the plot deviated meaningfully enough from the original (and let me see new sides of the world and characters) that the changes felt worth it, like in Takes Off, I'd enjoy myself more and I'd be able to appreciate what 7R was trying to do. Given SE has already confirmed this will loop back into Advent Children and despite a splash of multiversal time travel paint over the top of events that played out exactly as they were supposed to in the original though - I kind of doubt that will happen. This weird middle-ground is just unsatisfying. Commit to the new plot or just do a remake. It feels like SE is too scared to do anything really wild beyond offering harmless fanservice, though.
But don't get me wrong - there's plenty of new content for a lot of old characters in Rebirth, and a lot of it is really good. Barrett, Nanaki and Yuffie have skyrocketed to the top of my 'favourite FF7 characters' list because Rebirth was able to expand on their personal stories and characters in new and exciting ways, and from Remake onwards I've been extremely invested in Rufus Shinra where before there were days I'd forget he existed. Aerith is a consistently strong character across the entire game, but she would be strong in the exact same ways with or without the time shenanigans. In general, the 'minor' main characters come out of this really well (if you're not Cid Highwind. lmao)
If you asked 'do these changes expand your understanding of these characters/their stories' about most of the time spent chasing our original cast - my answer would be yes. For the most part, I feel like the Wutai subplot benefits Yuffie and expands Shinra as an antagonist, the Gi's inclusion was awkward but could deepen Nanaki's character, the Temple of the Ancients was fun and sad in a way the original wasn't right up until Sephiroth showed up in person and the extra time spent in Costa del Sol and the Golden Saucer made me care about my party and their relationships with Cloud. There's a lot of good here.
Although, those changes were the result of modernising/updating and tweaking existing plot elements - these strengths were in spite of the 'time shenanigans', not because of them. In my opinion, the time we spend with the party, fighting the Turks or the stories in existing locations are the best parts of the game. I'd expect them in the remake either way, and if 7R didn't mess with the timeline I'd not expect them to be absent or have changed at all. They're completely divorced from Sephiroth's nonsense and stronger for it.
In two full priced games, I can explore less of FF7's world and I get less main character story than I did in FF7 disc 1. Several locations are missing - including Rocket Town and Wutai, which had to be saved for 'part 3'. The loss of Wutai is to be expected, since 7R is still seeding that conflict, but it would've been nice to be able to engage with it beyond Shinra execs discussing it in board meetings. The loss of Rocket Town has seriously changed Cid's character, including his reason for joining the party - he has a worse one, now.
7R's desperate attempt to cover up for the fact that you get less world map and less story than you did in disc 1 are the side quests, the extra filler dungeons shoved between almost every settlement and the massive open world. The side quests are a mixed bag and there's a valiant attempt to make the dungeons interesting by forcing party changes and changing the playable character, but too much of it in quick succession gets exhausting.
The real issue is the open-world, where the main things to do seem to be hitting various kinds of checkpoints to get lore your characters should already know, find items, upgrade materia or fight minibosses. The open-world is huge, but there's not a lot to do out there, and you've already seen every activity the open-world has to offer by the time you've cleared the first region. It strikes me as the sort of pointless time-wasting inclusion a game has when the devs commit to expanding a 40 hour RPG from the 90s into three full priced triple A games without bothering to consider if there's enough story content to justify the split.
Which there isn't. If 7R cut the bloat and packaged Remake and Rebirth as one game, I would probably have felt a lot less exhausted playing them. As it is, completing the side quests and exploring each region before heading to the next one feels like a chore. I feel like the split is not going to be justified by the end result - and the ~mystery regarding Sephiroth's plots, mysterious only because it's being split up over three installments, is not going to be worth the wait.
It's Time Compression. My dude is doing Time Compression But More Bigger and less relevant to his character concept, and with it my hopes of an 8 remake go swirling down the drain. No, seriously, they're just riffing 8. They're riffing 8 even more now. This is just Final Fantasy 8. Won't someone listen. They're remaking the wrong game-
There are other minor plot points that grind my gears in Rebirth, but they're all largely that - minor. I did enjoy the card game, at least.
So in the end, my main takeaway is that 7 Rebirth is an over-bloated game that tries to pretend it has more to say than it does, and while when this game shines it shines BRIGHT, most of the time it's an exhausting slog that has left me feeling more confused and disappointed than anything. I don't think the time shenanigans have actually added anything beyond fanservice, but the expansions to the existing plot points were largely really good. This game made me laugh harder than anything else this year, and it made me cry. It also made me frustrated beyond belief.
Red XIII is the best character in this game by a mile, Aerith is a close second.
I'm unlikely to replay this game - I don't have the stamina for that - but I might revisit certain cutscenes. That's about it, really.

I can't believe were still at a point where people keep saying "SE literally said it's more like a sequel than a remake" timeline bs again and again. I know there's a tiny chance that might be, sure sure sure, but there's more things pointing towards that it's not. And I don't know what is with them and they continue to gaslight themselves that SE said such a statement. In the first place if such a thing were true? How come SE doesn't mind you don't play remake? At that point they're already bullshitting the "sequel" thing, because you've already missed stuff right if you just went ahead and play rebirth? But no problem because they're just refining OG, it isn't a sequel and timeline thing is 50/50 if not at all. I don't know how they're going to incorporate Zack into the mix, there's definitely going to be an important portion for him there, this is afterall a tribute to FF7. Whatever that is, I just pray that they can do it well. But that "its a sequel bs" pisses the fck outa me. Literally where is that statement they keep on yapping about so confidently?!
It's not a sequel. Advent children is a sequel. Remake is a remake. Rebirth is the second part of that remake. The devs are saying you don't need to play Remake because the plot points raised in it are repeated in Rebirth so noobs can follow along with what's vita. The battle system is the same as Remake but more evolved because of the combos, and the only thing missed in Remake is the beginning of that relationship development between party members, but since we're at a point beyond that, if you play retroactively and do Rebirth then Remake all that happens is you get to see those bits you missed.
It's literally no different to people who began the comp with AC then played the games. They get a further in point of the story as their start which gives them deeper understanding of the plot than those who begin at that earlier stage.
The devs are basically saying players won't miss anything if they start with Rebirth. It's just their way of reassuring people. It's not meant to be taken as "OMG NEW TIMELINE!!! SEQUEL!!! TOTALLY DIFFERENT AND REMAKE IS MEANINGLESS AND SO IS OG AND EVERYTHING!!!!"
The devs have literally said in every interview since remake was announced that the plot is the same as OG.

Final Fantasy 6 drawing by Nomura that was found around 2013. Can be found in the FFWiki.
An additional image of Cloud's prototype is under the Mog section.
This version of Cloud was used to create Squall - the reason why the FF6 Opera featured so much in FF8.
You can see that the characters are unfinished. Relm's hair is straight, Terra doesn't have a ponytail and has a circlet on her forehead instead (she doesn't have her earlier short hair at least), Celes has a piercing (which became Cloud's), Strago has a mohawk, Lara is Strago's wife but didn't make the cut just like Cloud (his original name is unknown), etc.
When this image was put on the internet, people began referencing a very early 1994 V-Jump interview with Sakaguchi where he said that the main character was originally Terra as a male. Well, Cloud takes a lot of stuff from Terra, so maybe it was a half-truth. Many also latched onto the idea that it was originally Squall, but appearances are deceiving. Squall was made after this prototype of Cloud as Squall & Rinoa's relationship is a modified version of the storyline that was cut in FF6.
This is why the symbols of shooting stars, orphans, witches, angels, a flower field, and the late game promise are found in it. Some of these things seem to have come from FF7, but it's older than that.
Another character that was made after this prototype of Cloud is Leslie from FF7 Remake.
Tumblr media
Leslie's talk with his Fiancée is about Cloud (as the FF6 main character) talking to Terra (as her earlier prototype?). Did you wonder why Cloud reacted so strongly to his story? This is why.
It's similar to the ending of Loveless as Cid originally said at the end of OG FF7:
"When the sister of the lead asks her lover, 'Do you really have to leave?" And the guy says, 'I made a promise. The people I love are waiting.' '...I don't understand. Not at all. But, take care of yourself.' 'Of course...I'll come back to you. Even if you don't promise to wait. I'll return knowing you'll be here."
Tifa immediately mentions that Leslie's necklace means "Reunion".
Tumblr media
The ending of Loveless isn't the beginning of that storyline. It started in the FF6 Opera, which is actually about Terra saying that she'll wait for Cloud to return. Yes, it's sung by Celes, but it's actually about Terra. The character who represents this FF6 Opera/Loveless thing is Aerith (who also lost her love). Aerith borrows Celes' opera design and her theme song starts exactly like the FF6 Opera main theme.
Regardless of how few people talk about this, it's far more important than anything in the game. Honestly, the entirety of FF7 may have been crafted around this one thing. The game's theme is "Loss", and the game keeps reminding Cloud of what he had lost.
All main themes of FF7R are in Terra's words. I know that confuses everyone, but I promise is makes much more sense seeing it this way than it does forcing the meanings into the other characters of FF7. What character hasn't yet met Cloud in any timeline? Well, maybe they're not in the game yet.
I'm not sure if Rebirth will be the one that'll reveal this "secret" to the light, but I'm sure that any hints it gives out will start to be noticeable. The main portions of FF7 Remake to include these "hints" are Biggs/Wedge/Jessie, Marle/Mireille, Betty/Oates, Tifa/Aerith, Leslie's sewer mission, and the Sector 5 slums, although there are many other random things. Moogles are used as a symbol for Terra, which is why it appears heavily in the area that highly implies her, The Children's Hideout.
Oddly enough, it's well known that FF7 was made with elements from FF6 and Terra herself, yet no one has ever asked why? I guess no one played Dissidia.
Yes, there are hints in games last decade that Terra would make a visit to FF7 land, even get attacked by Sephiroth. They're very subtle, but if you can pay attention to patterns you'll notice them. You just have to find out what Cloud does in every game and it'll make sense...it really is that simple! It has nothing to do with canon, since what the developer thinks is not what the fandom thinks, and the best hints are found in the games no one will readily believe in.

FFVII Rebirth spoilers below the cut:
So theory time: Omni-Aerith (as Max dood has dubbed her) = the Aerith that Cloud did save in the branch divide formed in the clash w/ Sephiroth. The one that got to continue growing in power, knowledge, and control as a Cetra to rise to equal or greater than Sephiroth is. Basically she didn't get stopped at Cetra lvl 35 (or whatever the level would've been cause its been a few years since I played OG) but had the time to get all the way to Cetra lvl 99 (or maybe 999 xD). She's the one that pops up in the finale fight of Rebirth; the one that doesn't coddle Cloud with his hero complex choosing to risk telling him to leave things to her instead causing him to have a mental meltdown due to said hero complex being shaken; and will likely ultimately be the one that stops Sephiroth. Even more to this is that because of her arriving for the finale battle showing Seph her potential, which fits with his "I underestimated you." line towards her. It could line up with his motivation to seek her out from across the multiverse to stop any other "Omni-Aeriths" from happening.
This also plays into the checking off boxes idea as a branch version of Aerith did die at Forgotten Capital just like or maybe even is the OG timeline; while also delivering on the Remake's hope, new, bigger, and "fuck fate" ideas via the other branchline that has her living. I firmly stand in the camp of "fuck repeating the same damn 20+ year old story w/ its bad end route"; instead wanting to have a new long-waited for good end route. One that will overall balance things by giving the universe a much needed good ending, alongside not in replacement of the bad end route, w/ a message about "valuing and fighting for life" to go with "acceptance of death as a natural thing" to wrap up the complete story. Rather than a fatalistic half-story that everyone has already seen or can see. Also the idea of Sephiroth merging the worlds means the villain wins, which furthers the fatalism angle. So like truly there would be no aspect of hope or anything outside of "well the world is shit".
inb4 anyone tries to come in with assertions I'm a new fan: I've been following the game since probably 1999 or close to it and have gone through most if not all of the Compilation. I'm also someone that never joined the club that gets a tingle in the pants over Aerith's death or makes it out to be some "has to happen" thing, cause if one actually looks over the story it doesn't actually. I also don't put the darker elements of FF7 as the entire core of it ignoring the other parts. I'm someone that loves the multiverse grandness of Remake-trilogy; someone that has been wanting a good end route for 20+ years; and someone that knows FF7 has more light moments than dark where the light is what kept me in the universe. I'm also someone that thanks to OG FF7 will never kill a substantial character in any creative work I work on, cause fuck that.
Also this goes into a different game from the 99 era comes to mind that also canonically ran with its bad end route in Shadow Hearts. In its sequel that involved a time travel mechanic, it did an incredibly creative thing in also making the good end route canon too in a 2nd run. Namely: Shadow Hearts 1 = canon bad end where the main femme dies due to the male MC not knowing about her fate and as a result of something tied to him -> Shadow Hearts 2: Covenant = the MC from SH1 shutdown after the loss from the first game seeking death but also given a chance to see her briefly again to say share "I love you" then proceeds into the canon good ending that sends the MC back -> Shadow Hearts 1 (2nd run) the MC (and player from a meta perspective) know the bad end (and players have likely have looked up the criteria to get the good end) and while not shown does so to save the main femme this time around. So don't tell me this shit can't be done especially in a dark ass RPG cause Shadow Hearts is DARK af with some of its stuff.

Lately, I've been really reading the FF7 timeline to copy it down for reference and I've found some *very* interesting details. Here's a list of stuff so far:
Bugenhagen is apparently born in 1877?? This means he's 130 years old in OG!!
Pres Shinra is born in 1940. Palmer is 3 years younger than him.
Hojo was born in 1945, making him around 35 when Sephiroth is born.
ShinRa was known as "ShinRa Manufacturing" before it was an electric company, and we apparently don't have a date for when it was founded but know it discovered Mako energy on September 23, 1959.
Heidegger is born in 1949, making him a year older than Vincent.
Both Vincent and Lucrecia are born in 1950.
Red XIII is born in 1959, which is apparently the same year the Gi attacked.
Grimoire dies ~1970, which means Lucrecia was around 20 when it happened. Can you imagine doing undergrad research trying to get ahead of the curve and you get your advisor killed by the equivalent of a minor deity cuz you wouldn't stop poking it? She wasn't even a grad student when it happened 😂
Barret and Reeve are the same age, having been born in 1972.
Cid is actually 3 years younger than both of them, having been born on Feb 22, 1975.
Construction on the Midgar plate starts in 1976, and ShinRa is known as an electric company by then, but we don't know when that actually changed.
Tseng, Rufus, and Rude are all the same age, having been born in 1977. SOLDIER is initiated in the same year to help bring an end to a long-running international war.
Oh, Jenova is also found in 1977, which means none of the trio can even be conceived until that year. The Jenova Project also starts up that year.
At some point between 1977 and 1982, Vincent is assigned to guard the scientists running Project S. Yeah, we have no concrete date for that.
Somewhere around 1980, the trio are all born. No actual birthdates for any of them.
Gast leaves Shinra in 1980, which means, that even if Sephiroth is born in late 1977, he literally never knew the guy. He apparently meets Ilfana at some point before 1985, but we have no date for that.
We also have no official date for Lucrecia going crazy and Vincent getting shot. Wiki says it's somewhere around 1984, which is fucking wild. Cuz it's stated that she goes crazy during pregnancy and Vincent confronts Hojo as a result of that, which gets him shot. And yet, Sephiroth is supposed to be born around 1980??? Which means there's no chance he was born that late? WHICH IS IT SQUARE???
Reno is born in '79, meaning he's conceivably older than Sephiroth??
We have no concrete date for Zack being born, just the "around 1984", except we know he's 16 in '00, which means he was born early '85 at the latest since he's canonically 2 years older than Cloud and CC starts in October of '00.
We have no idea how old Kunsel is! I usually place him as being born in '83 and a year older than Zack.
Aerith was born Feb 7, 1985 and Gast was killed 20 days later on Feb 27.
Cloud was born on August 11, 1986 and Tifa was born on May 3, 1987.
we have actual years for basically all the Tsviets being born and yet no date for Sephiroth.
Yuffie's mom is apparently named "Kasumi"??
The Wutai war begins "around" 1992, which means Sephiroth could conceivably be, at the youngest, like, 8 when it starts up and around 16 at the oldest. We also have no concrete date for when he gets deployed, but know he's apparently a 1st class already by then?
Tseng is also only, like, 15 when the war starts, which leads me to believe that he gets recruited by the Turks in the early days of the war. He's also a rookie Turk by 1997 when the whole thing that results in Kalm being bombed happens.
Cissnei is hailed as the youngest ever full Turk, and considering Tseng is one by the time he's 20, and Reno is one when he's late teens, she's gotta be as young or younger than Zack. I usually put her as being born in '85 and thus 15 when CC starts.
Before Crisis is fucking wild dudes. We have at least years for all the events and it gets the Turks involved in a huge number of events in the timeline.
Rufus isn't made VP until after Genesis deserts. Seriously. The mass desertion event happens in October of '00 and Rufus isn't VP until December.
The Wutai war ends in Feb of '01 and Avalanche starts being a problem almost instantly (hmmm, I wonder why?? It's almost like someone started giving the group funding to start up 🤔)
Cloud leaves Nibelheim somewhere between December of '00 (when he makes his promise to Tifa) and April of '01 (when he meets Zack on the Modeoheim mission).
Cloud successfully kills a RAVEN (an enhanced Avalanche soldier made by Fuhito, a cheap Hojo knock-off) with their own sword in June of '01 when he's 14.
Avalanche attacks the ShinRa building in June of '02 and apparently almost makes off with Hojo??
Avalanche learned of Aerith and actually try to kidnap her in August of '02.
Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth arrive in Nibelheim on Sept 22 and are then there for a whole 9 days before Sephiroth snaps and burns the town to the ground on the 10th (October 1).
Marlene is born in late winter/early spring aka early '03, making her 4 at the time of OG.
Apparently, Avalanche and the Turks were involved in the failed Shinra No. 26 launch?? I actually refuse this specific thing as canon, but the failed launch happened on April 12 of '03. Cid is 28 at the time.
The Corel reactor is attacked on May 8, and the town is blamed for it and burned to the ground apparently the same day??
Red XIII is captured by Shinra on October 30 of '06. And apparently, Reno was one of the Turks who captured him??
Zack and Cloud escape the lab on Dec 18 of '06. It then takes him almost 3 months to make it to Gongaga (arrives in February).
Then, Zack doesn't make it to Banora until September?? And that's when he deals with Genesis. And then he's dead before the month is over.
An entire mess with a summon called Zirconiade happens in early October of '07, where Midgar is almost destroyed cuz Fuhito decided that killing all humans was the best way to save the planet and turns himself into the summon?? Idk BC is fucking wild. This marks the end of this incarnation of Avalanche.
Tifa also finds Cloud wandering the slums in October of '07 and then the reactor bombing doesn't happen until December. This gives us officially 2 months of time where his recovery was happening and zero details. I have fanfic ideas already.
It's incredibly funny to me that Avalanche as the Turks know it is done in October and then, 2 months later, another cell pops up and has the balls to bomb a reactor. Talk about the mother of all cockroaches.
Apparently, officially, OG takes place over around a month or so??
Edge is being built by the end of January '08 and the WRO is also founded very quickly. I don't know if I believe that, really.
Advent Children happens in '10, and we have very little knowledge about those 2 years other than some OVAs and light novels I think.
DoC happens in '11. The less said about that, the better.

I am so sick of people asserting that Cloud's father is some super special important person like it's some explanation for the fact that he was able to save the world. Superior bloodline stuff never sits well with me in the first place, but in this case it's just so antithetical to the actual thesis of FF7 and does such a huge disservice to multiple characters that it makes me white hot angry.
The most popular contender is President Shinra, because Cloud being a Shinra bastard would (somehow) explain why he's allowed into the company at such a young age (even though enlistment age appears to be 14 and Cloud left Nibelheim to enlist at 14) and how he wound up on so many important missions—because it can't possibly be that he's actually competent, he's so pretty, how could he possibly be competent? It's not as if we see him being staggeringly competent from jump in every title where he's featured, including those that start prior to him being forcibly mako enhanced by Hojo. Clearly this is nepotism.
After all, we know that President Shinra is always so supportive of his bastards! That's why Lazard hid his identity and worked his way up the ranks to become director of SOLDIER at the youngest possible age and then set about trying to orchestrate a hostile takeover of the company by allowing all three of his best operatives to defect in the middle of a war, a process that was only thrown off because one of them passed off every single mission where he would have had an opportunity to go AWOL.
This was clearly the result of nepotism. There's just so much nepotism going on there. Obviously.
The newest contender is Glenn Lodbrok, the lead character from the First SOLDIER section of Ever Crisis, because he's blond-haired and blue-eyed and presumably one of the first people in Project 0 to survive some level of the mako enhancement process. I guess this is supposed to mean that him being Cloud's father would be a perfect explanation for Cloud actually being capable of literally anything, since the only way for him to become the hero that was chosen by the planet to keep it alive would be if it's part of some bloodline destiny.
There are a whole host of issues with Glenn as an option here, not the least of which is the canonical lore about Cloud's father, namely that he was some nobody traveler who kinda passed through and got Claudia pregnant and then left; he may have died up in the mountains, but apparently all that was ever found was his pack, so there's no way to be sure. Further, Claudia was very young at this point—according to her original concept art declaring her to be 33 at the time of her death, she gave birth to Cloud at 16-17 years old.
Glenn is one of two possible age ranges: if he was active in the early stages of Project 0, being a character in the First SOLDIER battle royale game, then he was around 21 in 1985, meaning a 21 year old knocked up Claudia Strife when she was 15 and then walked out on her. If he's 21 during the events of Ever Crisis, which seems likely based on his character design, that would make him 14 at the oldest when Claudia got pregnant.
Okay, I know this kind of thing happens IRL, but I feel pretty confident in the statement that there is absolutely no way that that's the direction SE is taking this timeline and characterization. I'm not even sorry. That's not happening. Either he's giving "predator," or he's Deadbeat Dad: High School Freshman Edition.
But that's honestly not even the worst of it, the math not matching up is entirely irrelevant when the implications of this assertion are applied to the actual thesis of this series as a whole, to the characters we already know, to the actual lore. Claiming that Cloud is only special because of the sperm donation of a man who abandoned him literally removes any concept of his competence as a character, declaring that he's just the newest iteration in a line of "worthy" men. He can't be worth anything unless his father is worth something. He can't be good at anything unless his father is good at something.
Beyond that, it casts Claudia aside entirely, asserting that the fact that she raised Cloud doesn't matter—she may have brought him up entirely on her own, but that doesn't actually matter. She didn't instill values and morals and guidelines into him that would allow him to grow up into a man who could save the world, she was just an incubator, a nursemaid, a nanny, a cook. She was just a servant who kept him alive long enough for his father's bloodline to awaken within him and make him into the hero he was always meant to be.
Insisting that Cloud's value as a character hinges in any way on his father, a person who had no place in his life whatsoever and whom he doesn't even remember, takes away his agency and declares Claudia to be irrelevant. It says that a sperm donation matters more than an upbringing. It says that the place he started is the only thing that defines where Cloud will end up.
This is literally, 100 percent, the opposite of the thesis of this series. The entire concept of these games, of these storylines, is that the way you were made doesn't have to dictate what you can be, who you are, where you're going. Your genetics do not define you, and assumptions to the contrary are literally what make people into monsters. What matters is the people you love, the people who love you, and the person you are now as a result of those people.
And the fact of the matter is that regardless of timelines, regardless of characterizations, regardless of theories, Cloud Shinra and Cloud Lodbrok didn't save the world.
Cloud Strife did.
Claudia Strife's son did.
And I think people could stand to give both of them a hell of a lot more credit.

Actually yeah if they do That One FF7 Spoiler That Everyone Knows By Now in Rebirth and don't alt-continuity it? That'd be the single most impactful thing they could do.
Imagine all that stuff but like, the Whispers right? They enforce the timeline but while the cast are fighting against that, they don't necessarily know what the original continuity is, right?
That happening and having to wonder, did we fail to change this? Was this the price of changing things? Did we change things, but this wasn't some sort of karmic price, was it just a meaningless thing that happened.
Like, from a thematic standpoint in the original story, that shocking death's whole thesis statement is that sometimes deaths happen for no real grand reason. It's not a dramatic sacrifice or heroic stand, it's just a tragedy...

ff7r part 3 ideas?
I’ve been seeing a bunch of posts discussing what people are thinking the new subtitle for the third part and I’m just surprised I haven’t seen
“Recreate”
as an idea? I feel like it follows the other titles “Remake” and “Rebirth” very well. Why?
Follows the whole “re” prefix. Make and Birth are still words with the re prefix added.
The “re” prefix means “again and again” this fits in line with remake because it’s the story of ff7 again. It’s just being made again. Being “birthed” again. Being “CREATED” again.
make, birth, and create have VERY SIMILAR definitions. They all have multiple meanings but all of them have the similar definition of “bringing something into existence”
Remake and Rebirth basically mean the same thing! What else basically means the same thing? Recreate. Adding the “re” prefix to the base words of “make” “birth” “create” all mean “to bring something into existence again and again” (Is this not the point of remaking a game? To bring it back into existence again?)
Remake, Rebirth, and Recreate just look nice together; it’s short, sweet, and simple.
why would it be “reunion”? yes it somewhat kind of fits in with the previous statements (“union” doesn’t fit too well with the whole “bringing into existence” thing) but the main reason it isn’t reunion is because it’s been used already and it wouldn’t make much sense to use it again from it being confusing and from marketing reasons. Also, “reunion” is used for the game that doesn’t even have the Reunion in it. i dunno it seems kinda funny to keep it that way
Recreate fits in with all the new story stuff as well. The whole new timeline things are just bringing in more ff7 again and again. The whole remake trilogy is about doing ff7 again but changing it up slightly
———————
but hey, what are your thoughts? who knows it could be rehab or requiem or revenge. I just feel like “Recreate” fits very well with what has been given already. or y’know that new one winged angel song could spoil the name of the game again, who knows?
I also like to imagine that the logo will be fully red, as there was just a little bit of the red in rebirth’s logo, to indicate the approach of meteor just cause i think that’d be cool.

[Shop Update] - somewhat lol
Key points:
Small reopening in late Feb / March for extremely limited amount of left over goods + Gaius themed sticky notes
Announcements will be made in the 3 weeks leading up to reopening
Pricing is the same as last time
Etsy for ALL orders for now (Worldwide, including US)
No preorders this run - it's all in-stock and ready to ship!
Additional shop musings below the cut.
I’m waiting til late Feb / March to put my very tiny bit of left over stock + sticky notes up in the shop. Uhhh FF7 Rebirth may mess with that timeline a bit.
I’ll just have it on Etsy for all orders (US included) since I can’t gauge how long it’ll take for stuff to sell. Ideally I just want to pay for one month of BigCartel’s fees and not keep my shop open indefinitely on BC. I don’t have enough product in stock atm to justify paying their monthly more than one month tbqh, but it does seem more ideal for US pre-orders at least!!
Pricing for all previous goods will be the same. Sticky notes… still pricing those but expect those to be in line with other people’s custom sticky notes. I don’t have the economies of scale on my side to offer them any cheaper, unfortunately, and I would like some payment for my time designing and processing orders. ; v ;
I’ll make announcements at least 3 weeks in advance of the shop reopening so people can plan accordingly! I’ll have to look again to confirm but there’s 1-2 left of most things if you missed out the first time around.
Ah yes I’ll have to take new product photos… fun stuff.
Not sure if I’ll have preorders for everything for the next round – at least I can safely order from the old manu and point out “hey this looks WILDLY different from the last one” to get it redone without a fuss but I also have some other behind the scenes things to take care of.
For the next ‘big’ drop it may just be the Gaius standee and some more stationary goods. We’ll see… so many plans, so little time! And at SOME POINT I would like to get the Gaius dolls done but I haven’t even begun the quoting process for that – and the lead times would be very long I imagine.
Look forward to seeing what all happens with Gaius Pop-up Shop in 2024 o7 Even I don’t know!!

as i SLOWLY work my way through remake, i am struck by how square enix attempted to make everyone sound… more coherent than they did in the original ff7. (maybe its just me, but in the og they sound so… well, it sounds like all the characters are having a conversation that i am incapable of understanding the actual context of.)
except for aerith.
don’t get me wrong i LOVE her, and her lil expressions!!! but also is she just supposed to canonically be a fuckin’ weirdo??? like girlie WHY are you speaking like this…….. you’d think she had enough time post-lab to figure out how people Actually talk. she wasn’t even this cryptic/nonsensical in og, which leads me to think it’s just a part of the remake continuity timeline stuff, but.
man.
AND SHE TALKS COMPLETELY NORMALLY WITH THE OTHER PPL U MEET WHEN BRINGING HER HOME??? WHAT IS IT ABT CLOUD THAT MAKES EVERYONE WANT TO FUCK W HIM????
