tips for writing secondaries that are not your own ~

(I get asked this a lot - and I've finally written all the secondaries enough to feel pretty good about this!)

BIRD SECONDARY - Think in terms of if/then flow charts. 'If I am in X type of situation, I use Skillset/Persona/Tool A, then B... but if B doesn't work we shift to C.' Birds LOVE retrofitting old skills to new situations. I was writing one Bird secondary assassin character who worked thusly:

Identify authority figure in current hierarchy.

Please authority figure: use Company Man skillset > Posh Brit skillset > Assassin/Fixer skillset (in that order)

LION SECONDARY - What do they want. What is their goal. Send them after the goal in the most direct, fastest way possible. If something gets in the way, double down and have them do whatever they were doing LOUDER and MORE. If they don't have all the knowledge/skill they need, they do not care. Their goal posts can and DO change QUICKLY - and if that happens, now they're after the new thing with the exact same intensity as the old thing.

SNAKE SECONDARY - They go into a social interaction thinking 'what do I want this person to think/feel/do RIGHT NOW,' and act accordingly. But the KEY is - they reset constantly. They take a new read on the person they're interacting with (and pivot accordingly) like every five seconds. It's how you can get a snake who runs though multiple personas/strategies in a single conversation.

BADGER SECONDARY - They go into a social interaction thinking 'what do I think this community needs in general.' Not what does this community WANT, what do they NEED. (A community can be huge, or a single person.) And then... they make themselves into whatever is needed. They will almost certainly stick to a single persona/strategy for at least an entire interaction. Sometimes Badger secondaries (like Stede Bonnet) are *totally wrong* about what their community needs... but commit to their vision of the world anyway.
