Webnovel Carrd Links [Part 1]
I usually use Novel Updates, but Carrds are great to support the author, find translations not on NU, find Content Warnings, and learn more about the story / other adaptations. If there's a novel not here, it can be helpful to search the name of the novel + "carrd" or "novel updates"

Some sad moments in C-BL novels I've read
spoilers warning!!!
Qiang Jin Jiu : Li Jianheng's death - i didn't like him that much so i was surprised that i was sad... but he really was trying his best to be a good emperor. in his last moments he was worried about Xiao Chiye and Hai Liangyi... what really broke my heart was when he said 'don't make me the emperor in my next life... i want to be born as a swallow in dazhou' all he really wanted was to live his life happily and have fun... the author really wrote it so beautifully
TGCF : When HC disappeared - 'There is no banquet in the world that doesn't comes to an end' i can't explain the way this line tugs at my heart... like we all knew he's going to come back but i couldn't help being sad about it... Hua Cheng was literally always there, so it caught me completely off guard when he started fading
Qiang Jin Jiu : (again) Xiao Fangxu's death - i wasn't expecting it. i wasn't expecting it all. i know the the war was ongoing but i still wasn't expecting it... i wish i could transmigrate into the novel and hug the poor wolf pup (even though Lanzhou would probably hack my head off) and it being a trap made me feel worse about it for some reason
Lord Seventh : although it wasn't particularly a moment but He Lianyi pining for Beiyuan was kind of sad to me... for some reason... i didn't like He lianyi that much either but i'm sooo weak for the unrequited love trope... whether it was because of the circumstances or the people themselves that they couldn't be together but He Lianyi truly loved Beiyuan and no one can tell me otherwise. but that doesn't means i don't like the canon ship coz i love love looooove wuxi sm and Beiyuan deserved someone like wuxi.
Dinghai Fusheng Lu : Che Luofeng - let me tell you i'm still traumatized. i hated what he did, how he treated Zhou Zhen and poor Chen Xing also suffered but i still felt bad that he had to end that way... that's just what the beauty of writing is... these authors write so beautifully it can't be blamed on me... it's not like i wanted him to live but it's not like i wanted him to die either... thankfully in the next half he lived, but still... the unrequited love...
Fox Demon Cultivation Manual : the truth about Feng Zhoujun - firstly i liked this arc a lot... despite my emotions being played at every turn... after seeing how Jiang Liang was harassed, humiliated and beaten up before "Feng Zhoujun's" eyes i hated Feng Zhoujun(obviously) but when the truth was revealed which was that the real Feng Zhoujun loved Jiang Liang so much he would literally give him the world i was so heartbroken. how Feng Zhoujun tried so desperately to hang on but still died... how Jiang Liang saw Feng Zhoujun dying but he was still unable to do anything... it was all sad to me... (bless wen changchu for hanging madam bitch feng to death)
alright this post became way too long so i guess this is enough for one post... (i haven't finished QJJ yet so i have no idea what's in store for me up ahead)

This week's read: Qiang Jin Jiu
all 1.1 million words, plus the 21k of weibo extras. Did I sleep? Not really.
THAT WAS GOOD.
excellent fighting scene / battlefield planning
excellent political intrigue (terrible exposition to get there)
ships you can totally get behind (your side-CPs are all quite lovely)
I wanted to adopt Xiao Chiye 10% of the book in
the BANTER IS THE BEST. Sometimes a bit OOC but they're fun enough that I don't really care
You can see the character deaths from a mile off, but that's a good thing I guess
there aren’t any real title case Evil villains (A+), everyone has their motivation and tbh I kind of want to root for the bad guys
(technically by Confucian standards MC is the bad guy)
all the minor characters are really colourful and 3-dimensional
your MC is intelligent, but not invincibly so (he is not winning bc he’s the smartest, it’s because the smartest ppl want to work for him, power of fear friendship and all that)
the bad guys lost because they’re conservatives Confucian, i kid you not (wasn’t that also how sha po lang went)
the smut is pretty and M-rated
HE (not for everyone, but hey nobody got sentenced to death of 3,000 cuts or anything)
9/10 will recommend, memorise the map and keep a list of names handy, it's impossible to read otherwise. Those exposition paragraphs does not care that I have a bad memory. Think of it as a 56 episode period drama.
Minor gripes, tried my best not to post any spoilers (past the first few chapters) under cut
This book would have been so much better if the story started earlier — take the "past" extra, stick that in the beginning minus the shippy bits, and give us the politics and geography like they're teaching it to CHILDREN as a flashback AND THEN take it all away from us with the war. That or at least go back a week before the war so I have some time to get attached to "the good times". I get starting with a bang, but that sense of loss and despair that should have been passed along to me just wasn't there, because I can't lose something I didn't HAVE.
Alternatively, the whole idea of the beginning is that cities were massacred and messages never passed on so nobody got away (except for Shen Zechuan) so just give me a prologue of war and excitement of destruction, skip over to Shen Zechuan’s very idyllic life miles and miles away, and then have the war GET TO HIM.
As is, the beginning is this lump of word-salad death and torture and beatings and I almost didn't want to keep going — because I didn't have the motivation to see it all get better, and the writing style itself is so so, what is pacing. The beginning is a bit of a trudge.
There's also a bit about the ending that went against MC (Shen Zechuan)'s consistent motivation. On the one hand, we can interpret it as love has given him a new way to live, that the past is forgiven and he's moved on, but the way I read it, the author just wanted to write smut taking place on a certain chair, in a certain costume.
And lastly, Shen Zechuan, while being the MC, is overshadowed by pretty much everyone else in terms of characterisation. Everyone is so colourful that he seems grey by comparison, if that makes sense? I can feel what other characters feel. I can’t really feel what Shen Zechuan feels.
But overall It’s a good book. It’ll probably be better on a re-read.

85% into Qiang Jin Jiu
- okay remember i said what Shen Zechuan said to his Erlang about a betrothal gift of 2 million wasn’t enough was the sweetest thing - nah Xiao Chiye yelling “I found you a man! The most beautiful man in all Great Zhou is my wife!” to his dad, is the sweetest thing - I think I found the writer’s strong point, that is some EXCELLENT epic battle and fight scene planning. Nothing fancy, just solid, easy to understand fights that are brutally graphic and drawn-out battles where I’m never confused as to where things are / why are these people doing these things - literally the moment someone draws a sword the writer does a transformation, like they’re sudden very inspired and the prose flow so much better - i love how they keep losing (you all know what i mean, i detest the 爽文 genre) - it’s like slowburn but for imperial political intrigue - I do not love how telegraphed the (minor) character deaths are (very) - like *character says thing* me: you’re dying in the next chapter i guess - I will read another 500k of Qi Zhuyin x Hua Xiangyi - Every interaction between those two makes my heart all fuzzy - I’m getting Mulan x Princsss of Rouran feelings - Actually, both the major side-pairings in this book all have that “I turned around, there you were, and the sky was filled with three thousand peach blossoms” feeling - #*($^#%^*#^$*

I’ve started reading Qiang Jin Jiu. 1/5 of the way in, I think?
Thoughts so far
- TOO MUCH EXPOSITION ALL AT ONCE @_@ - TOO MANY NAMES - I’m very confused and regret not keeping a list of who has what job and who’s related to whom  - it needs a map. I have no idea where anything is. It describes a map, but i’m very bad at understanding directions in any language so whenever they talk about WAR and supply lines, which is a lot, I feel kinda foggy - i love both MC and ML already, they’re both really messed up and terrible people, and therefore i’ll keep reading - female main character who fights exist (this should happen more often in other danmei books. I mean if we’re going throw out homophobia why bother writing in sexism) - MC x ML First meeting: fight. second meeting: cat fight. Third meeting 5 years later: flirt. It made no sense, I threw the phone - and then i kept reading for another 3 hours - it’s 1.1 millions words and it’s xmas season so i have work deadlines so - no sleep, i guess - I’m sorry to everyone who tells me it’s well-written, but it’s not. It’s somewhere between priest and MXTX level of wordy web-novel prose that can lose 30% of the bulk in the hands of a good editor - (but they don’t bc jjwxc pays writers bonuses for chapters with a minimum wordcount updated daily!) - Ming dynasty is really good for court intrigue and so far that does not disappoint - it’d help if i remember who half these people are though

30% into Qiang Jin Jiu
- this is reminding me of To Rule In a Turbulent World by Feitian for some reason - 「where are we going to get food for the army」 - 「but supply lines they don't work how will we even ship that」 - *runs a salt business in background* - *shuffles money back and forth all over the place* - the lone wild protective wolf Xiao Chiye as the fighter, and the far prettier and smarter Shen Zechuan as advisor - but I guess Shen Zechuan Shen Lanzhou is more of a ... Li Qingcheng (Yingnu). (*smiles* *kills*) - they're basically power couple now (quick burn, sex first love later, the couple part sort of kind of just happened as did cohabitation) - 「well our leader has a boyfriend i guess that's fine」 - okay, those are the reasons - everyone else in the city going 「oh those two hate each other」 is just the funniest thing - 「二郎「 ahhahahha
33% in - about that 「this reminds me of LSWW」 part, haha it really does now - 兩百萬娶不走離北王的狼崽,這樣的聘禮配不上我的蕭策安。 is literally the best line in the book so far, 35% in - although their banter is the highlight of this book, 志同道合的混球不好找 is another of my favs

omg now that you're done with qjj (yaaaay), if you don't mind sharing: what are your thoughts on 姚温玉 and 乔天涯?
Scroll down. (The blog, that is. Just one post)
If the book was written from just their perspective, I’d totally read it. It’d be a tragedy, but I do read tragedies. Most of my favs actually are BE.
I can’t tell you too much about Qiao Tianya, as his plotline happened in the first part of the book, and I’ve only read it once so I’ve forgotten half his back story. But what I love about Yao Wenyu’s story is its inevitability.
He had to die, because he’s like a firework. He’s gunpowder set up in all sort of intricate ways but kept in a cool and dry place. A firework isn’t anything until you light it, and Yao Wenyu was only alive while he was dying. Qiao Tianya understood this; I suspect that if Yao Wenyu remained an inert firework those two would never have progressed anywhere past ... pet-sitting and qin-playing.
In review I find Qiao Tianya’s ending reaction to be somewhat ooc.
(I was expecting him to stay, collect his lover’s ashes, keep the red string in the urn, and take it with him as he travels the world so if one day he accidentally died somewhere they’d be buried together, no matter where they are? Not, turn right around and disappear before 頭七?
though that does remind me of another tragedy, in which an MC refused to open a coffin to see the body one last time, because “he is not lying in there, that is not him, so why would I look?”)
But back to inevitability: they were only possible as a couple because bad things happened to both of them, and these bad things made for inevitable 天人永隔, which is how i like my tragedies. (i love them)

This week’s read
I’m actually reading Qiang Jun Jiu right now, which goes on, and on .... and on ... so here’s two old-ish books of the court-intrigue danmei variety.
深井冰 by 蒼白貧血, the title means “Deep well ice” but it’s actually the homonym / internet slang for “mental case”. 200k. If this had archive warnings it’d have to warn for everything, rated ... E I guess? HE.
Emperor Jiang Huaijin used to be a puppet of general He Yan until he was able to get rid of He Yan’s conspirators and bestow him a bottle of poison. But since Jiang Huaijin couldn’t bear to actually kill him, it wasn’t really poison. It merely made him forget who he is. When they meet again, He Yan, now known as “Huaihuai”, a fake eunuch being kept somewhere in the harem, falls in love with the emperor at first sight ... and proceed to pursue him in all the ridiculous ways
The good: The writing style is impeccable, the pacing is decent and there’s a sense of mystery that draws you in, it didn’t end where I expected it to, and for all the angst and violence and death, it’s really funny. Written from gong perspective.
The bad: 三觀不正, lol, contains split-personality trope and amnesia trope.
雨魄雲魂 by 閒相飲, basically just H. 140k. There is so much H in this I’m surprised they managed to fit in a plot. Enemies with benefits. HE. (The plot is very thin so I won’t bother typing it out, but again, warnings for everything)
The good: it’s very well-written and the H scenes don’t feel repetitive at all
The bad: sometimes the H goes on for so long i lose track of the plot (what plot)
