The UFO dropped Rubyn and Ji Ho at the Burrow. Francine is already waiting for them. There's a lot to manage and discuss... Rubyn: "Are you ok, Ji Ho?" Ji Ho didn't take the last flight with the UFO very well... Ji Ho: "Uh... a bit dizzy but way better than last time!"

They followed Francine inside. Where Genji already waited for them. Francine had called him after she sensed that Vlad and the others left this world with the Ship. Ji Ho was going to live with Genji anyway after Vlad and him would have cut the Bond eventually. But now they have another problem: Vlad, Ji Ho's bonded, is gone. Who knows where. And now other Vampires might want to claim Ji Ho. So Francine hopes Ji Ho returning to his first bonded Genji will do to keep them at bay...

Rubyn and Ji Ho filled Francine in about the Expedition, Professor Callahan and the other Jeb and Jack's message... Francine teared up. Jeb is her beloved grandson: "Gods, Jeb..." Rubyn: "But now we have all I need to proceed. We should soon see positive results and send Ji Ho over to the others to bring back Kiyoshi and 'move on' - whatever that means."

Francine took Ji Ho aside to talk alone with him. Francine: "When you return to the others tell them it's up to you now. We won't interfere. You proved you became a proper team now. So wether you cut the Bond or not - it's your decision. I know this won't be an easy one. It's your life after all and we can't force you to stay with Vlad, whom you don't love, to save creatures and fight the Council."

"But remember: you and Vlad signed a contract to do everything to cut the bond. We put in a lot of money and effort to help you and we ask a part of this money back from you. A lot of Rubyn's reasearch will be useful for the Resistance, but still." Ji Ho: "I'm sorry we caused so much trouble. We made this decision from what we knew at this point to keep our friends safe from the Council. But we can't ignore Jeb's message. *Ji Ho sighs* It's a dilemma... But I will accept my fate and stay with Vlad and we will use the Bond to do good. I will learn to love Vlad. And we will pay back the money." Francine: "Very well then."

And then Rubyn, Ji Ho and Genji left the Burrow. Rubyn went back to Britechester to continue her research on the meteorites, the pedestal and the recordings from Albaleyh. And Ji Ho and Genji went over to Genji's flat above the Laundromat...

So many memories! Here, September 2022, just across the street Genji bit Ji Ho and claimed him, Vlad died, Ji Ho left the Space Bar to live with Genji, they held the duel where Vlad claimed Ji Ho and bit him and they formed their bond, which poisoned Vlad - and he died again...

Genji: "Are you sure it's ok for you?" Ji Ho: "Don't worry, Genji. You had no choice either. It hadn't been easy for you too. Thank you for having me."

Ji Ho: "Oh. You kept the photos." Genji: "You are so beautiful. Shall I take them off?" Ji Ho: "No. It's ok." Ji Ho knows that Bonds are doing things and make creatures a bit obsessed ^^' See Vlad...

Ji Ho took a shower and got rid of his jungle attire he wore almost non stop for the last days. They chatted and laughed and Genji was cooking for him. Ji Ho can't remember when he sat in peace alone with someone and just had a good time. (This was last time when you stayed with Genji, Ji Ho...)

Or anyone cooking only for him. Not even his own mother did this. Definitely not his mother...

It's so - homely... Ji Ho never had a proper home. He grew up in the Slums of Sulani and practically lived in the streets. Jeb, Saiwa and the others became his 'home' no matter where they lived. But they were always on the run - a save place, a haven, somewhere to stay... He licked blood and started to crave for something like this...

Anthony is a beloved fixture in Kate’s grandparent’s house. He’s been going there since he was six, with his backpack and playing cards with Kate’s grandpa. They’re thrilled when Kate and Anthony get together.

And for all their talk of Grandma Sharma being a legend, Grandpa Sharma is also a legend in a much quieter way.

Edwina was terrified to tell her grandparents she was dating Josie, but they’d been a huge part of her life and she didn’t want to lie to them anymore.

So she cleared her throat at dinner one day with Kate squeezing her hand and said “I’ve been seeing someone. A woman. Named Josie and I’m really happy with her.”

Everyone was silent, staring back at Edwina before their grandmother sighed “Well where is she then?”

“She’s… at home?”

“She doesn’t eat?”

“I… wasn’t… I didn’t know if she would be welcome?” Edwina stuttered looking around at their family sighing as her grandmother turned to Mary.

“Listen to this one. I’m a very modern woman, Edwina, not like Francine across the street. She won’t let her son and his boyfriend in the door, shameful behavior if you ask me.” She tutted, disgusted, “As if that’s not still the child you raised.”

But Edwina wasn’t listening, she was staring at her grandfather, who hadn’t stopped eating his dinner, anxiety clawing at her stomach. “Poppy do you… are you okay?”

Her grandfather finally looked up at her, shrugging, “Girls are pretty, am I supposed to be mad that you noticed?”

“Girls are pretty.” Edwina agreed, swallowing the lump in her throat. “My girl’s really pretty.”

“That’s good.”

And he didn’t say anything else but the next time Edwina saw him he had a tiny rainbow pin on his sweater vest.

“I bought this off a nice young man at the market. He makes them in notting hill with his husband.”

“That’s… sweet Poppy, thank you.”

Grandpa Sharma is also one of Anthony’s best customers. He stops by every day for a fresh loaf of bread. All the staff know him. He buys a loaf of bread and a custard tart and he eats the custard tart before he goes so his wife doesn’t know because he’s supposed to be limiting his sugar intake. He doesn’t care.

okay you reblog a lot of albums ive never heard of and am curious about but it’s hard to get myself to sit down and listen to a whole album so please please, Top Ten-ish Songs To Get To Know You kind of list? pretty please?

i literally daydream about people asking me stuff like this LOL. so this is hardly a comprehensive list of all my favorite songs ever but here are some songs that are really important to me!!! this got REALLY long so i put it under a read more

1. meet me in the woods by lord huron

my absolute favorite song Ever like of all time. means everything to me. i could listen to this every single day and never get tired of it. INSANELY fun, incredible vibes, makes me want to go outside and shoot a beam into somebody. lord huron is an Experience. all their albums are concept albums and there’s actually a fair amount of lore going on. on the physical CD for strange trails it actually has the characters’ names next to their respective songs

for meet me in the woods, it sounds very upbeat and happy, but listen closely and you’ll realize it’s not quite as it seems… in-universe, it’s narrated by a woman named francine lu, and the song has the same chords as the first track of the album (and another of her songs) “love like ghosts”. she also narrates “the night we met”, easily LH’s most famous song. francine lu is not having a normal one. what’s her problem? listen to find out…..

2. crystals by of monsters and men

this was my favorite song ever for about 6 years until meet me in the woods ranked just a tiny bit higher. sooo fucking fun, itches a part of my brain that’s only accessible via icelandic stomp & holler. makes me very happy and always cheers me up! of monsters and men was the first new (at the time) band i ever really discovered on my own without hearing about from my parents or other people, and i’ve been listening to them ever since (almost 13 years!!) they are incredibly important to me and i highly recommend all of their albums

3. sunblind by fleet foxes

relatively new but became a favorite as soon as i heard it. this is also one of the most Me songs i can think of on top of just being so fucking gorgeous and raw and heartfelt. this song is a tribute to deceased musicians who influenced robin pecknold (the lead singer and songwriter for fleet foxes) and how their music is pretty much the reason he’s even alive today. my favorite lines are “only way that i made it for a long time / but i’m loud and alive, singing you all night”. this entire album is sincerely a masterpiece and i highly recommend listening to it all. fleet foxes have really beautiful and unique lyrics, they remind me of mitski’s lyrics in that they’re very poetic and personal and emotional but still subjective enough that you can connect them to your own life

4. this must be the place by talking heads

specifically the stop making sense live recording, which i still half-refuse to believe is a live recording because it’s just THAT fucking good. whenever someone says david byrne can’t sing i direct them here, because he does sincerely have an incredible voice and he simply Chooses to sing weirdly bc he’s a quirked up white boy with autistic swag.

this is just a really sweet and romantic song from a band that otherwise stays far away from love songs and it works extremely well. this entire album is fucking incredible and easily the best live album of all time. half of them are BETTER than the studio recordings, and you can also watch david byrne leap straight up backwards like a full 4 feet

highly recommend watching stop making sense just the entire film

5. vein of stars by the flaming lips

back in 2014, i watched a very beloved streamer play a game called “space engine”, in which you explore as much of the universe as we’ve theorized to exist. this was a little before copyright laws got so fucking strict on youtube and twitch, so mr. vinny vinesauce could play any music he wanted while planet-hopping. one of those songs was vein of stars, and it’s been one of my absolute favorites ever since.

the flaming lips are definitely an acquired taste. wayne coyne does Not have a very good voice and it can get extremely grating, especially to someone who hasn't heard them before. but when it works, god it works. this song is so pretty and nostalgic to me, always calms me down whenever i’m In A Mood. it’s nihilistic but not in a depressing way, more like “yeah maybe we aren’t here for any particular reason, maybe there’s nothing after this life. there’s nothing we can do about that, so why worry?”. very peaceful. REQUIRED listening when stargazing

6. good old-fashioned lover boy by queen

one of the first songs i ever truly hyperfixated on. unfortunately i listened to it SO fucking much it kind of ruined it for me, but i still do really love it. i may not listen to it that often anymore but i felt obligated to put it here bc it had a Profound Effect on my developing brain

7. too much time by john vanderslice

the year is 2012 and you're halfway through the newest episode of the hit podcast welcome to nightvale. cecil announces the weather. little do you know that you will carry the next 3 and a half minutes with you for the rest of your life. this one is just absurdly nostalgic to me (and not to mention incredibly vash the stampede coded). beloved song!!!

8. waltz for zizi & the real folk blues by the seatbelts & mai yamane

well it’s no secret that i think cowboy bebop has the greatest anime soundtrack of all time and one of THE greatest soundtracks of all time Ever. this is just an objective fact actually.

i believe this is because the seatbelts and specifically the composer yoko kanno studied real jazz, blues, and bebop to make the ost. like it's not just "jazz-flavored", there is genuine, deep respect and you can hear it in every single track. waltz for zizi gives me physical goosebumps every single time i listen to it, it's absolutely perfect. i've made it a ritual to listen to every time i visit the shore at night and go stargazing. sincerely transcendent experience

9. cuckoo song by cosmo sheldrake

hhhhhrrr this entire fucking albummmm hhhhhhhrhhhhrhhhaauuuuUUUUOOOGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHH!!! AHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

back during my final semesters of college, i had to take a course for art degree seniors. we’d pick something we were passionate about, make art for it, and it would be hung up for a week in the exhibition room. i chose birds of course, but wake-up calls inspired me to shift that choice to something more important than just random funny bird drawings. i focused on bird species that have gone extinct within the last 60 years because wake-up calls is made almost entirely out of endangered bird songs.

i’ll be honest i can barely listen to this song or anything on the album because i WILL literally start sobbing like in real life. cuckoo song in particular just makes me start crying every single time i listen to it, it’s like a magic spell. it’s not even necessarily sad but just viscerally bittersweet. the art for the album is made by flora wallace. here’s the spotify canvas i made a gif just for you 👍

10. take you back by orville peck

and finally………….. the song that made me realize that i actually DO love real country music a lot, and that the derivative “bro country” sub-genre that developed in the early 2000s has absolutely destroyed any positive opinion of country music in society. we NEED to go back, and orville peck is more than doing his part. this is the first song i ever heard by him and it's just so goddamn fun. i am completely unable to not sing along to this when it comes on

not only do i highly recommend orville peck but also any country music from the 50s and 60s, especially marty robbins, charley pride, conway twitty, and of course mrs. dolly parton. and later country rock/folk rock bands like america and creedence clearwater revival. it’s SO good i’m so serious

orville peck is the only modern country singer i can think of who's not afraid to bring back the harmonicas and whistling and steel guitars and whip cracks and yeehaws. it's fantastic. he's also gay and an outspoken trans ally. i believe this gives him the power to revive country music from the dead 🙏

I didn't manage to include all of them - some I just don't have a strong opinion on (like most of Moffat parents, that really wasn't the focus of his series, was it?) others I am undecided on and I am sure I also forgot about a few. Also, I've only watched Newwho. But here you go, there is still a large number of family members in the end:

I'll blabber a little about it under the cut if you like :) Also, because I am not quite sure whether everyone is recognisable 😅

But anyway thank you so much for the ask, this was fun!

Since most of them are on the same spectrum from travelling to booping, let's start at the left bottom corner and work our way up and around:

Obviously, Najia Khan is the one I would most like to travel with - okay, I guess that isn't actually obvious except to me. It might have something to do with the fact that I already knew Shobna Gulati from Everybody's talking about Jamie, but I saw Najia and went "I like her, I trust her, she's perfect." And then everything that happened confirmed that. She's cool, she's badass, she's constantly trying to set her daughter up. (Which is obviously overstepping a line but also so mum). I don't know why but I am pretty certain we could work really well together. But also she's not very cuddly, so she rates lowest on the boop scale.

Then come the three people I know would be great at time and space travel. Brian did very well all things considered, he even had some fun on that spaceship. And he's just very sweet, so I definitely want to hug him, too <3 (That said, he is on the very right of the three because I am a little angry with him for playing favourites with Amy over Rory - but I don't actually want to punch him.) And Eileen and Neville, come on. They were Sontaran fighters within a week (?). They'd be badass timetravel companions and they seem like fun people to be around as well.

Then Francine, slightly higher up because she gets a few less trust and a few more affection points. I love her, a lot. And I would trust her to be a competent and kind travel companion. But she hurt Martha and herself on accident by trusting the wrong person, which - while totally understandable - might initially stand between us more than, say, the playing favourites thing of Brian's. Plus, I absolutely adore her and a hug from her could probably fix me, so the desire to hug her is much higher than for the other four.

I obviously don't want to punch Grace, not even a little bit, but she is on the same step as Francine and there is only that much space here. But yeah, definitely would travel with her in a heartbeat (we would see so many frogs, can you imagine??) But also I think a hug from her would actually be perfection.

I want to date Tish, so that puts her perfectly in the middle between travel and boop. She has such a nice aura, she is kind and driven and curious and I kinda wish she would have travelled with the TARDIS in s3. That would definitely have led to some change in 10's comportment towards Martha and we could have had sister dynamics! (Then again, there's the family of blood arc, maybe rather not. It's bad enough Martha had to go through that. On the other hand, the ending of s3 is not better at all.)

I would like to travel with both Wilf and Jackie and I am pretty sure that'd work out reasonably well in either case. But also they are precious and I want to hug both so bad.

And Sonya and Hakim are just the most beloved characters, please, please let me hug them and have dinner with them! I am sure I would love Hakim's food: everyone (= my sisters) says they don't like my father's food either but it's my favourite, so i am sure it'd be the same with Hakim! And afterwards Sonya could explain video games to me :) I don't need to travel with them, and I am not sure they would make the best travelling companions for me, but just one night at their place, for conspiracy theories and games, please!

Sylvia would definitely have been further down in the punch corner if not for the 60th anniversary special. Now I still want to give her a stern talking to for how she messed up Donna, but I also want to boop her gently for getting this much better and trying her best with Rose and keeping her family safe.

Moira is only below her, because I care about her less in either direction. I still want to punch some sense into her (verbally, probably) because she has literally the best possible adoptive daugther and she speaks to her like that??? Woman, do yourself a favour and get to know Bill? Like, you are so lucky to be living with her, HOW are you not seeing that? She is also a tiny bit in the 'want to travel time and space with' direction because if you could just make her see, you know?

1. What's the maximum amount of time your character can sit still with nothing to do?

God like. maybe ten minutes. And that's only if someone's nearby to keep her occupied. Rosalind's an introvert to be sure, she loves her alone time, but she MUST be doing something or she will Lose Her Mind. Even if it's just reading her own book yet again.

4. How easy is it to earn their trust?

Mmmm my child is naive and has been called this to her face. Even in her social aversion, she prefers to give people the benefit of the doubt. If she doesn't, it's anxiety hell, and she would rather not do that thank you very much.

5. How easy is it to earn their mistrust?

Insult a friend of hers or do something against them and BAM. Instant Ro dislike. Doing something against her is still pretty mistrust-worthy, but the fast lane toward it is via hurting the people important to her.

6. Do they consider laws flexible, or immovable?

To her, laws/rules are solid. She might consider something to be unfair or just plain dumb, but they're rules for a reason, right? Not much to do about that.

8. What were they told to stop/start doing most often as a child?

"Rosalind Francine, don't touch that."

13. What color do they think they look best in? Do they actually look best in that color?

Ah silly simple plain child. She thinks she looks best in brown and muted colors. It's a striking contrast to Ibuki's wardrobe, and she thinks it's funny. Ibuki does not. Ibuki once pouted so much over the concept that she dragged Rosalind on a shopping trip. They found out that Ro does look good in warm colors, especially yellows/golds/oranges.

20. If they were asked to explain the difference between romantic and platonic or familial love, how would they do so?

Truthfully? I don't think she could. Not because she doesn't understand the difference herself but because explaining concepts like love are Difficult for her. She uses a lot of physics/chemistry analogies, but there's not really a good option for this, so she just kinda implodes for a sec and then books it.

28. Would they prefer a lie over an unpleasant truth?

Rosalind "tell it like it is, Hinata" Curie prefers the truth. She sees it as a way to move on and grow.

38. What memory do they revisit the most often?

Meeting Ibuki! It was incredibly chaotic, but since the interaction led to a wonderful friendship and left her feeling warm and fuzzy in a new place, she just loves thinking about it.

HELLO WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW HOW SEXY EVERYONE IN THE STRANDING IS?

I have been searching face- and body- (and one butt-) claims all afternoon and OOPS, everyone in The Stranding is hot now. Sorry not sorry.

This list is technically In Progress but will I update it regularly or ever again? The future is a mystery, my friend.

NOTE: THESE PICTURES ARE BASELINE SUGGESTIONS FOR THE CHARACTERS. basically a good place to start from when coupling with the written descriptions. Please enjoy!

Commander Peter Martellis: Same height as Henry, slightly less built but still muscular. Fantastic legs and butt from riding horses all the time. Short dark hair with some notable gray streaks. Thick eyebrows and dark brown eyes. Well-trimmed black/dark haired beard with silver throughout. Crow's feet in the corners of his eyes, laugh-lines. Has smiled a good bit in the past. 35-36 years old

These photos were originally just going to be for hair and beard but it's just too good not to go with this face-claim in general. Case in point:

Captain Daniel Grant: Clean shaven blonde, luxurious blonde hair that goes to his shoulders, pulled back often in a loose ponytail. Pointed face, very much a resting bitch face situation. Icy, blue-grey eyes that are VERY sharp. Slightly taller than Peter and Henry, thin and agile frame, also a competent rider, so also has nice legs and butt. 34-35 years old

This sour bastard has beautiful hair.

Corporal Lionus Ethridge: Extremely kind, bright hazel eyes. Bushy eyebrows. Slightly shorter than Peter and Henry but not by much. Soft, light-brown hair that comes to about his ears in soft waves. Light scruff usually but shaves every couple of days-- at least one or twice a week-- to avoid growing a beard of any kind. Thinner than most of the other officers, doesn't have majorly large muscles, seems mostly agility-built similar to Grant. BEST GUESS FOR AGE: Early-Mid Forties but could be as old as fifty.

He's pretty.

Second Lieutenant Edmund Miller: Broad chested, big strong shoulders. Man looks like a happy lumberjack basically all the time. Not bad with riding horses but obviously uses his arms a lot. Warm brown eyes. Taller than most in the Watch. Brown hair, always has some amount of scruff on him but never manages to have a beard, and somehow only ever is clean shaved for special occassions. 27-28 years old

If you throw these three pictures into a paint mixer and shake them all together, that's the closest I can seem to find to our beloved adorable Himbo man

Second Lieutenant Gregory Jones: Fairly plain face, blue eyes, sandy-blonde hair. Shorter than Miller but not by a lot. Very straight, proper posture. Athletic build, strong arms but not nearly as thicc a boi as Edmund. Short hair, as with most of the watch. Little longer on top, almost shaved/short face on the sides. 27-28 years old

First Lieutenant Terrance Wells Yes his name is Terrance. "He had a serious face, his neutral expression looking like a man deep in his thoughts. Dark blonde hair, a long nose and sharp features were almost betrayed by stunning dark eyes, large and round, with a browline that seemed soft, pleasant. He was one of the taller men, with a thin, lithe frame, and as he removed his jacket to inspect the back for dirt or debris from traveling through the dusty construction zone she was reminded of male figure skaters." 27-28 years old

Adam Rippon for body (white figure skating costume), that NICE BUTT for his butt, and face for face. Wells is very pretty and has a FANTASTIC butt.

Second Lieutenant Rupert Chase Yes his name is Rupert. Brown eyes, nice eyebrows, brown hair though partially sunbleached to be a bit lighter in the summer. Looks similar to photo. 23-24 years old.

I have been looking at firefighters and cowboys and figure skaters all afternoon, it's been a good day.

Photos similar to when she was younger, like to imagine that yellow dress photo is very close to a portrait from her youth that hangs over the fireplace in hers and the Duke's home.

Yes they had a rough start but if he notices anyone bothering Kreo, he would not hesitate to threaten them, I feel she brush it off as "I don't need your help." , but actually appreciates it

Very much that couple that fights all day but makes out passionately after

Aiden lost a bet once and had to play model for Kreo a whole day with evidence photos, he still is grumpy if you mention it

You could never get them to admit in public about their feelings, only if they are alone in a room together.

Media hasn't noticed either that they are a thing

Aidens love language is more treats he leaves for her during work of her favourite food and she fixes his torn up clothes from the hunt

As Barry met him, he was already considering him as sidekick material but didn't take him much serious, that changed after some missions together

His first real feelings for him came once where Barry got in danger on a mission and Luke pinned him to the wall after, telling him that he should watch out for himself more... that look and all got him emberassed and thinking for a while

Final part of the Lazarus Experiment rewrite featuring a TenxMartha treat at the end:

-After the paramedics wheel Lazarus's corpse outside when he turned human again, Martha and The Doctor walk out the doors holding hands and are met with her family. Francine still slaps the Doctor accusing him of endangering her daughter, to which Martha retorts that she made the choice to follow him back inside.

-When Francine tries to convince her that the Doctor is dangerous, they all hear the ambulance crashing. Martha tries to follow the Doctor but he turns around and begs her to stay safe with her family before he leaves, running off to find Lazarus.

-Martha tries to follow him when she's stopped by Francine, who demands her to stay. She snaps and tells her mother that she met the Doctor in the hospital, that she saved his life and in return he saved hers; she also asks her mother why she's suddenly so angry at the Doctor and Francine mentions a man that has warned her about him.

-After learning the lies her mother has been told, Martha promises they will clear everything with the Doctor when he comes back, then she runs away in search of the Doctor, followed by Tish

-Once at the Cathedral, they bump into him again when he's talking to HumanLazarus, and he demands to know what they're doing there. Martha baits Lazarus to chase her while the Doctor works on a solution to make the mutation reverse itself.

-When Lazarus falls to it's death, and Martha runs downstairs to meet with the Doctor, he just pulls her to a bone-crushing hug, only pulling back to look at her face chastising her for putting herself in danger again.

THEN...

He cups her face with his hands, presses their foreheads together and begs her not to do it again before his lips capture hers. It's shy at first, just a soft press of lips and he starts to pull back when she doesn't respond ;but then Martha's hands wrap around his neck and up his hair and he's back in full force. They let out a gasp at the same time as their lips meet in a firm kiss, with both her lips pulling on his lower lip.

They kiss long enough for Tish to let out a cough which makes them break for air. When they notice her again, Martha tries to hide her blush by hiding her face in the Doctor's jacket.

-When they all head back to where Francine and Leo are, the Doctor steps forward and faces Francine, assuring that he doesn't want to hurt Martha or to put her in danger. Martha then steps between him and her mother and says that she's sorry for worrying her and walking away but that she won't put her life on stop just to please her. Then both she and the Doctor tell Francine about how they really met and who he is.

-Once Martha and him are back in her apartment, the Doctor checks if she's alright after Francine walked out from them. She assures him that she is before reaching out to hold his face for another kiss, which he gladfully provides. He stops the kiss from going any further, telling Martha that he doesn't want to use the fight with her mother to take advantage.

Instead the spent the night cuddling inside the Tardis library.

lots of things can change, but francine slapping the doctor is eternal

i love how well the doctor and martha work together. like i think she's on a lot more equal footing to the doctor in terms of capability than other companions, and it's really refreshing to see both of them execute a plan together.

On Francine Descartes:                      Beloved and lost to the unknown, the finality of human existence and the vastness of the sea.

Descartes, in this context of my writing, is symbolic of “man” himself, as in how he and modern philosophy is the cause of our binary world, as Derrida would put it; thus creating this hierarchy of binary- a mans world of logic, speed, efficiency, and beuroacry which subdues the gendered feminine qualities of emotional intelligence, girlhood and innocence, and the magical spiritual qualities of feeling and the senses. Though, in Descartes attempt to create a logical world, I feel some sort of sympathy for him, as his attachment to his daughter Francine displays his erroneous ways, which help put holes in his arguments. Thus we must understand the importance of magic, a certain senimtentality which is seen as feminine and thus not compatible with our “man’s world”. 

In many interpretations of Descartes’ intrigue with automata, one may find that his mechanical doll made of his late daughter Francine may represent his investments with logical thinking and his materialist conception of human existence: “the human body is a machine which winds its own springs”. Yet in my interpretation, Benjamin Frymer in his book “Cultural Studies, Education and Youth: Beyond Schools” allows me to take a unique “leap of faith” to understanding Descartes and his sentimentality, the erroneous world we live in as he suffers under his own logical thinking just as we do. I am not blind to the horrors, the seemingly irreversible culture we live in due to modern philosophy’s structural, geometrical proof, mathematic like thinking- it is just that, I am looking to help facilitate the understanding that our world is horribly objective and lacks the emotional capacity we have lost with progress and technology, we understand how he killed himself too. Frymer, on page 120, explains that Descartes daughter, “ Francine[,] was the love of Descartes’ life, a lively source of joy in his otherwise solipsistic and melancholy existence. The early years of Francine’s life were spent at Descartes’ rural retreat near Santpoort, Netherlands. When Francine turned five, Descartes planned to take his daughter with him on a trip to France. Shortly thereafter, Francine fell ill with scarlet fever. Within a short period of time, Descartes daughter had died. Descartes was devastated, confiding in a close friend that Francine’s death was the greatest sorrow of his life.” In his effort to cope, as well as his interest with creating automata, constructed a doll of his late daughter and brought it on his journey, telling the crew members he was traveling with Francine. Yet to their confusion, they searched his bags in fear he was a kidnapper, only to find this clockwork living doll able to move and make sounds, which “mimicked the signs of a living ‘childlike’ being” (Ibid). They threw the doll into the sea in their horror, an irreversible blow to Descartes soul. Reading this, I began to tear up- oh what a sad life, he had lost everything to his own mind, his own logical thought inevitable to doubts and despair, and his only sentimentality, the memory of his daughter, masked as one of his “projects”, gone forever. 

In his ways of establishing a logical system of understanding, he thus wanted to doubt everything, everything he had learned, felt, experienced in childlike wonder. He starts his meditations with “It is now some years since I detected how many were the false beliefs that I had from my earliest youth admitted as true, and how doubtful was everything I had since constructed on this basis; and from that time I was convinced that I must once for all seriously undertake to rid myself of all the opinions which I had formerly accepted, and commence to build anew from the foundation, if I wanted to establish any firm and permanent structure in the sciences.” (Descartes, Meditations 6). His doll of his beloved daughter thus suggests his desire to “capture and sustain lost childhood, reflecting a latent anxiety over the fragility of life, and the hitherto ‘replacebility’ of children” (Frymer 173). In her creation, it exposes a lack of his philosophies, as his emotions are not in line with his notorious, logical thinking: a certain lack of meaning, feeling, in his doubt of senses. With her second death, departing into the vast sea of unknowing, he began to fade out of existence and soon, within six months of his arrival off the ship his own work manifested the reality of death from pneumonia The world that he has now created, destroyed him before it destroyed us. Francine’s mechanical form, cast unto the symbolic magical infinity of the sea thus represents her immortality, which was a byproduct of her finality, her mortality which her father tried to cope with in her resurrection.
