❤️ Improve Your Skillset ❤️ . 📝 The quote, “A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor” is an old English proverb that means that those who are skilled at sailing come from the most challenging of times. . 🤓 The phrase "smooth sea never made a skilled sailor" is an analogy for how difficult it can be to predict what life will bring. . ❤️ People who use this analogy usually want to make the point that we are not able to know what will happen in the future, no matter how easy something looks from our perspective today. . . . . . A Very Specific Case
Two Party Opera comic 922 Herbert Hoover explains to Franklin Roosevelt how the Silicon Valley Bank situation is "A Very Specific Case." #bankcollapse #siliconvalleybank #bailout #politicalcartoon #presidents #herberthoover #franklinroosevelt #comic
I wrote today’s comic last Friday while I was listening to the news. You can imagine how the panelists were discussing the Silicon Valley bank collapse.

Happy #WomensHistoryMonth!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perkins with David Dubinsky in 1944, and Eleanor Roosevelt in 1961.
Happy March! To kick off #WomensHistoryMonth, our first #LaborOrganizerSpotlight of the month is Frances Perkins.
An avid women's rights activist from the start, when she encountered the tragedy at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, she immediately sought reform and action to prevent similar workplace horrors. Recommended by Theodore Roosevelt, she was appointed executive of the Committee on Safety which was crucial in the creation of the New York State Factory Investigating Commission, which was in charge of ensuring factories were up to code.
Years later, in 1929, then NY Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed her Industrial Commissioner of the State of New York. From there, she persistently encouraged him to take action following the stock market crash, and he appointed her in charge of a committee on employment. Upon FDR's election, he further admired her tenacity and accomplishment and appointed her the first female Secretary of State, thus the first female on a President's Cabinet. Her responsibilities included dealing with the issues of the Great Depression, most notably unemployment. Her support and efforts towards the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) helped make it one of the greatest successes of the New Deal, but her most significant contribution was the Social Security Program. Serving as chair on the Committee on Economic Security, which created the Social Security Program, the Social Security Act was signed into law in 1935. Additionally, her efforts and ambitions were reflected in the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1935, which established a federal minimum wage and prohibited child labor. (Source: fdrlibrary.org)
Did you know she was a Cornell University #ILRSchool visiting lecturer from 1957 to 1965? And, the Kheel Center has an extensive collection on the labor movement while Perkins was on FDR's Cabinet: photographs, correspondence, interviews, memorabilia and lectures! See Coll. 5017 and  /3047 AV.

#SelfPortrait #MalvinGrayJohnson Malvin Gray Johnson was active during the heyday of the #HarlemRenaissance of the 1930s. The Harlem Renaissance was an intellectual and cultural revival of #AfricanAmerican #music, #dance, #art, #fashion, #literature, #theater, #politics, and scholarship centered in #Harlem (in #NewYorkCity). Johnson simplified the #forms of his #subjects and occasionally emphasized his African past by including #African #imagery in his paintings. The compressed space in his Self Portrait speaks to Johnson’s profound awareness of #modernist compositional devices. The easel at the left side of the canvas identifies him as an #artist, and the #masks in the background make an assertive statement about his African #heritage. In 1934, the year he painted his self-portrait, Johnson joined the ranks of the #PublicWorksOfArtProject, the first of President #FranklinRoosevelt’s #NewDeal art programs, which paid artists a monthly stipend. Although the job lasted only six months, Johnson was finally able to paint full time. Ironically, the year proved to be Johnson’s most prolific but also the last of his short #life. #DailyArt (at United States) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co5PF4wvK0W/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Casablanca Conference or Anfa Conference was held at the Anfa Hotel in Casablanca, Morocco, from January 14 to 24, 1943, to plan the Allied European strategy for the next phase of World War II. In attendance were United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British prime minister Winston Churchill. Also attending were the sovereign of Morocco Sultan Muhammad V and representing the Free French forces Generals Charles de Gaulle and Henri Giraud, but they played minor roles and were not part of the military planning. USSR General Secretary Joseph Stalin had declined to attend, citing the ongoing Battle of Stalingrad as requiring his presence in the Soviet Union. The conference's agenda addressed the specifics of tactical procedure, allocation of resources, and the broader issues of diplomatic policy. The debate and negotiations produced what was known as the Casablanca Declaration, and perhaps its most historically provocative statement of purpose, "unconditional surrender". That doctrine came to represent the unified voice of implacable Allied will and the determination that the Axis powers would be fought to their ultimate defeat. . . . . . #casablancaconference #morocco #ww2 #allies #axis #winstonchurchill #franklinroosevelt #greatbritain #us #war #warhistory #history #historicalreminder https://www.instagram.com/p/CFKYcyoBILz/?igshid=5wf5x1mtavtn

It’s become obvious that Donald believes the Russian propaganda that Ukraine and not Russia hacked into our elections in 2016, one of the Bogus things he wanted investigated in his shakedown of the Ukraine president with taxpayer dollars.
This would be like if the Japanese had convinced President Roosevelt that it was China and not Japan that bombed Pearl Harbor.
Then again, in 1941 we didn’t have a Dumb Ass as a president.

We’re back at it #bookfacefriday, with Me and Orson Welles. In late autumn 1968, Dorian Bond was tasked with traveling to Yugoslavia to deliver cigars and film stock to the legendary Hollywood director Orson Welles. The pair struck up an unlikely friendship, and Welles offered Bond the role of his personal assistant - as well as a part in his next movie... This fascinating memoir follows Welles and Bond across Europe during the late 1960s as they visit beautiful cities, stay in luxury hotels, and reminisce about #winstonchurchill and #franklinroosevelt among others. It’s filled with Welles’ acerbic wit and featuring stories about other famous figures including #LaurenceOlivier #marlenedietrich and #stevemcqueen - and set against the backdrop of the student riots of the 60’s, the Vietnam War, the rise of #romanpolanski, the Iron Curtain, and Richard Nixon’s presidency. 🎞📽🛵🚃 Out now from @thehistorypressuk and a #IPGTopShelf pick! . . . #bookstagram #bookface #bookish #hollywood #orsonwelles #meandorsonwelles #dorianbond #memoir #performingarts #oldmovies #citizenkane #hollywoodlegend #tcm #elizabethtaylor #cinema #igreads #othello #moviedirector #biography #goodreads #tbrpile #currentlyreading @bookfacemagazine (at Chicago, Illinois) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqQl0kXHi2N/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=4mjovpvm3ee
