Das & Ofi for Mermay 2022 AU

Das is based on an oarfish and probably think of Ofi as strange fish or seal. Figured out he's actually touch starved and followed this strange seal to shallow water.

Eventually becomes a concern for the local marine researchers and they ended up taking him to their facility to treat him for whatever ailment he got.

L&Co AU with Mermaid!Lucy (Cot3)

Anthony Lockwood had never really believed in mermaids. Until he saw her.

Freedivers Lockwood and George stay in the same place on the coast each summer, but this time they’re not there to relax. Fishing nets have been banned for years because of their impacts on the environment and local marine life — no local fishermen use them anymore for the same reason. When a turtle washes up on the beach after being caught in a net, the boys take it upon themselves to find out who’s responsible. It turns out they’re not the only ones interested in getting justice for the sea creatures affected.

Enter Lucy Carlyle, anonymous environmental activist and local mermaid.

This summer might turn out to be more eventful than they thought.

Whint is a Northern Brook Lamprey!

More infodumping under cut-

Julian learned about Whint being a mer through Whint trying (and failing) to flirt with him, which ended in the both of them tumbling to the ground, Whint on top of Julian (Lilly was also there and found this hilarious).

Julian created a special waterproof binder for Whint! It was a present in an attempt to impress him and be nice. In the modern day, the design has been updated and used for Jay.

(Context: in this AU, Dr. Julien is also a marine biologist) Some of Julian’s earliest successes in the marine biology field were studies on northern brook lamprey and coconut octopuses. This was because Whint and Lilly pitched in to help.

Julian has mer heritage! His dad was an arctic lamprey mer, thus Julian, despite being human himself, has slightly sharper teeth (Whint thinks this to be adorable).

These two dorks have practiced kissing underwater so many times just to show their friends they can do it.

Related to the above point: Julian learned freediving specifically for that.

Julian acts like a free crutch for Whint when he needs it because mers (sans Lilly and mers with species that can walk like her’s) are notoriously bad at walking in their teenage years.

Whint gets so many fin pets from Julian. Just… so many.

Maybe it's just me:

As a writer who is firmly on Charlotte's side of things when it comes to H2O, I find that in any story (canon/canon divergent/AU), Charlotte's character could be used as an avatar to bring to life relationships with other characters.

What do I mean? The H2O gang? Cleo, Emma, Rikki? Let's accept the idea that they would have never opened up to her no matter what. And Charlotte has to pay for that by being the villain in their story and Cleo's nemesis. But because of canon, we never know what would happen or the influence she'd have if she was a part of someone else's story.

Bella Hartley: As someone who's written countless posts about character building her, I have a good balance on what she's like with canon and how to build her with headcanons. The sweet, bubbly, sensitive side of her is something I always keep in character, but I counter that will allowing her to be angry (ranging from subtle to actual yelling), acknowledging being wronged and taking a stand, and utilizing her work traveling experiences. Charlotte being in her life would have brought out these headcanons because she's the adventurous type and is brave enough to address the elephant in the room when it comes down to it.

Kim Sertori: The "annoying, bratty little sister" that everyone and their mother hate (especially on Tumblr). Since very few bother with utilizing her character in a good light, that leads to a lot of antagonistic vibes in fanfics. And that's as a human. Putting her in a mermaid tail is a whole other story. I'd go as far as to say many would believe she'd make a horrible mermaid and get herself revealed sooner than later (regardless if Cleo's involved or not). And this is why, to be honest, if this young, part-time mermaid needed a mentor - It would be Charlotte. She's fell off the wagon, paid the price for her actions. If anything, she learned more about herself and realized her wrongdoings (unlike the group in S2 ending). If anyone could wrangle and get through to Kim without bias - It would be Charlotte.

Miriam Kent: I have played with Charlotte and Miriam's relationship enough times to grasp how I could approach it. They would likely contrast, not as fire and ice would like Emma and Rikki, but in terms of home life and personalities. However, I do see Charlotte wearing Miriam down: Calling her "Mira", getting her to enjoy being a mermaid, not being stick up. Balancing and bringing out the normal girl no one sees (except maybe Tiffany).

Sophie Benjamin: In theory, most would assume Sophie and Charlotte would be arch-nemesis. Charlotte, for all her faults, loved being a mermaid and that would extend towards the Moon Pool and Mako Island itself, whereas Sophie, for her greed, destroyed the moon pool and made it inactive. However, similar to ⬆ with Kim, I believe Charlotte could get through to Sophie. She'd ask the big questions like why she's obsessed with Will's freediving career and her obsession with money. With time, she'd likely get Sophie to chill and form hobbies outside of Will to find herself.

With that being said: I think Charlotte would have been able to do some work, regardless of whether she arrived earlier or later in the show.

Pirate au: sports and downtime

Pepa: surfing champion, no doubt. She likes riling up the waves to make them just right for a full morning carving them up.

Isabela, and Camilo: wakeboarding. With her gift, Isabela has perfect control over where she is in the water, and loves enjoying the speed they get when Casita is running fast. Luisa can also do this, but it's often more for practical reasons. She doesn't try doing tricks as much as the other two.

Dolores, Mirabel, Bruno: small boat sailing/rowing. They can do it really quietly too when they have to.

Agustín: windsurfing. Everyone's surprised at this, especially how he manages to stay upright and not fall in, but he manages it.

Swimming (not Félix or warm colour kids): Pepa. They're all decent swimmers, but Pepa's the fastest in water of the rest of them. But Julieta is quicker at getting her land legs back when getting out again. Triplets used to have a race, where they'd have to swim around an island, run across the island and back, and then row back to the ship. It was always a close thing,

Félix loves seeing how high he can jump out of the water. Sometimes there are hoops involved- if he really wants to show off, or his family sets him a challenge.

Dolores: diving. She can disappear underwater with barely a splash, and loves the thrill of diving in from a height. Sometimes she'll go up with Isabela in the rigging and swing out over the water and dive in from there. She will also go for cliff diving.

Antonio: synchronised swimming. He calls it underwater dancing, and tries to get everyone to do it with him at some point or another. He has fun. Kinda unintentionally taught by Félix, who likes having fun when swimming anyway. Antonio was mirroring him and then if became a thing. Antonio loves teaching the others the moves.

Mirabel: freediving. She spends so much time with Antonio, she's well practiced at holding her breath underwater. When she was living onshore, she also would go diving in the bay, searching underwater for 'treasure' to impress her family with.
