So I havent seen anyone comment on it yet, but amongst all the Rocks Pirates, there is one that stands out... Not for being impressive mind you, but for the fact of where he began, to where he ended up.
Tumblr media
Who am i talking about?
Tumblr media
Well if we zoom in a bit... We find Gatz.
Tumblr media
That's right, the Gladitorial Announcer from Dressrosa used to be a member of the Rocks pirates.
Tumblr media
40 years has clearly done a number on the former pirate, and he's changed his helmet up a bit, but thats very clearly him.
I havent seen anyone comment on it, so I just wanted to put this out there.

One thing I love about One Piece is how characters and story-bits pop up again and turn out to be more important than they originally seemed. And one of my favourite examples of this is when seemingly minor bystanders end up playing an important role in the story.
The first time I really thought about it was with Kokoro. When the Straw Hats first meet her, she seems like a bit of comedic relief: a strangely dressed, drunk old lady who keeps guzzling booze.
Tumblr media
Then we find out her connection to Tom and Franky and Iceburg, and she ends up providing some vital help to the Straw Hats, both getting that train going and then, eventually, revealing her mermaid-self and rescuing them from certain death. (As deus-ex-machinas go, this is the way to do it: hide a mermaid in plain sight!)
Tumblr media
And in Dressrosa, a similar thing happens with Gatz, the Coliseum announcer. At first, he seems like he's just part of the whole Doflamingo-system of using entertainment to keep the population subdued and entertained with bloody spectacles. And he kind of is, though he's as clueless as much of the population of Dressrosa as to what is really going on in their town. (Working with the gladiators though he must have seen some bad stuff and just decided he was OK working for the Doffy-regime anyway.)
Tumblr media
But little by little Gatz becomes a fan of Lucy/Luffy, and by the end, there is Gatz, carrying Luffy to safety (risking his own life in the process!) when Luffy is down and out after fighting Doffy. AND THEN he even does his announcer-schtick for the final showdown. I loved that touch. Character development in miniature in the midst of such a grand story-arc.
Tumblr media
I really love how Oda adds depth to the story by using these smaller characters and giving them some arcs and journeys. It's a small touch, but I think it makes a big difference.

Doflamingo's Past: The initial concept
Some old information but I don't see around a lot, scan credits to Redon. These are from One Piece magazine vol. 3.
Tumblr media
Zooming in,
Tumblr media
- Doflamingo at 5 enjoys his life as Tenryubito.
- His father (Donquixote Dressking) who looks tough and serious ("righteous thinker", "friends with Cobra") refuses antipathy and as a result was transferred to a non-WG member country along with his wife and his only son.
- Doflamingo's mother can't survive the foul living condition and dies.
- Doflamingo wanting to become Tenryubito takes his father's head back to Mariejeoise at the age of 10.
Tumblr media
- Doflamingo is declined by Tenryubito who try to kill him.
- Doflamingo flees and survives. He develops a goal to destroy the world.
- Around 15, he forms a crime syndicate "Downs" (ダウンズ) and is revered as the charismatic boss.
- His subordinates were Pica, Trebol, Diamante and Corazon, there's also Vergo (Vergo's other name in the bracket is written as "Sir Dean").
- Corazon here isn't Doflamingo's brother.
- Around when Doflamingo was 17, Roger was executed and he was inspired by the man to pursue piracy, his goal changed to "becoming the pirate king." He continues operating underworld as Joker.
Tumblr media
Nothing much here, I like the observation that Gatz announcing the fight between Doflamingo and Luffy makes it seem like an extension of Colosseum battle. That's a neat way to tie it up.
Some additional info (canon version) from OP vivre card translated by Artur:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wish I could read the JP text myself but it seems Viola's case was something like a Stockholm syndrome after all.
Personal highlight would be Rosinante eating his DF before meeting Sengoku (which means Sengoku didn't immediately find him. Rosi probably survived all by himself for quite some time), and Doflamingo developing the habit to smile at everything from a "certain point onwards." Imagine Rosinante returning to his brother who now smiles all the time. That is terrifying, I feel like it adds so much to Rosi's face having the artificial smile on him.

A moment of weakness.
Morgan comes out of her room with some sketches she's been working on. She wasn't surprised to see Rin and Michael rough housing in the common living space. When she asked where Jet was, they paused the fight to answer he went to the roof and acting weird, and with a "Thank you" from Morgan they resumed fighting. Morgan opened the door to the room and immediately started talking. Jet was facing the horizon, away from the door Morgan just came from.
Tumblr media
"Jet, there you are. I've come up with another bike design. It's a cross fusion of your hover bike and-" Morgan stops mid sentence and sniffs the air. That's a familiar smell in a not so familiar place. "Hey, what smells like-"
It was then Morgan saw smoke come from Jet's face. There's a cigarette loosely being held between his fingers, the hand that held it hung low to his side.
Tumblr media
"JET!" Morgan rushed over and swiped the cigarette from him, Jet didn't even flinch. "What the hell are you doing?? You don't smoke!"
Jet didn't even respond. He's too focused on the horizon. Almost as if he's waiting for something.
Morgan's tone suddenly shifted. "Hey. What's gotten into you?"
It took a moment before Jet responded.
Tumblr media
"Gatz is in trouble, Makoto took Tamako to save him, and she didn't want me to go with her. And I'm... trying to be optimistic." He just dropped all this on Morgan, and of course that made more questions than before.
"What?" Is all Morgan was able to get out. She was still processing what was just said.
"Somewhere, Gatz is in so much trouble that someone had to call for help. They asked for Makoto specifically. I can't even remember the last time Gatz was in a bind, nevermind actual danger. Makoto's capable, but..." Jet's hand formed a tight fist and started shaking.
Tumblr media
"Why? Why didn't she want me to come with her? What if she gets hurt? Why didn't I just go with her anyway?? I'm such an idiot!"
Jet does get worried for his fellow Mavericks, but Morgan's never seen him get this upset before. He must actually be scared. Morgan puts her hand, still holding papers, on Jet's shoulder.
Tumblr media
"Hey. Do you think that maybe the reason she didn't want you to go is the same reason you wanted to go with her?" This made Jet turn to Morgan with a raised eyebrow. She continued. "You're over here worried for her safety because you don't want her to get hurt. What if she told you to stay behind because she also couldn't stand the idea of you getting hurt? You said it yourself, this is a GATZ level threat. She had to know the risk."
Jet huffed, looking back to the horizon. "You're probably right. I just don't see why we both couldn't take that chance."
Morgan moved her arm to Jet's opposite shoulder and leaned into him for a side hug. She looked off to the distance with him.
Tumblr media
"Gatz can be a cryptic bastard sometimes. He has connections we don't know about, even contingency plans for things we don't think of. For someone to call us about him, and ask for someone specific, it's probably more planned than we realize. Makoto is probably the perfect piece to the puzzle he needs, and the one who called knows it. Just have faith in her."
Tumblr media
Jet took a deep breath and nodded slowly at first only to grow more confidence in the nod. "I believe in her. I know she will come back. It's just hard in the moment."
"It really is." Morgan nodded and then looked at the hand holding the cigarette she snatched. "And the cigarette?"
"Mm. They're hers." He calmly admitted. "She doesn't smoke often, and she tries to hide it, but I've known about it for a long time. I thought maybe if I smoked her brand, some mysterious force of nature would grant her luck. Or at least she'd change her mind and call me."
Morgan shifted her frown a little. She then sighed and offered the cigarette back to Jet. "Then just this once. Don't go picking up bad habits like it's nothing, got it?"
Tumblr media
Jet took the cigarette back with a nod. This time, he took a drag not out of stress, but out of determination. She will return. She will be safe. And if she doesn't, he will fight the world if he has to just to bring her back. With an exhale, and a stronger resolve, Jet broke it in half. Another deep inhale, followed by a yell.
Tumblr media
"FUCK EM UP, MAKOTO! I BELIEVE IN YOU!"

The situation that’s happening with some guy named Sean Gatz is super frustrating and a good look at what women have to face when speaking out. As soon as that women made that allegation the burden of proof was on her. She is the one that some how has to get multiple pieces of evidence for a one off assault that happened in a few seconds. She actually was able to pull of some evidence of him saying “I didn’t slap you that hard” and now everyone is mad she had the audacity to record him. Either way here’s the proof you demanded! Mind you, many wanted video evidence she was slapped and this was the second best thing! Now it’s not good enough because we are arguing over semantics that it could be illegal when you guys wanted him to be recorded doing it in the first place.
Sean then said he patted her and made some story of her being this rich evil villainess with a murderer father. She was portrayed as psycho who dared to argue with him and ended up slapped. Now, do we ever get any context or proof that she’s as crazy as she has been made out? Any proof she’s this evil spoiled rich girl? Any context of the father murder or any correlation to him slapping her (which is funny that your scared of a murderer, yet not scared enough to slap his daughter)? Nope. All people need is his word. A man can gaslight and DARVO his way out consequences and people will pat him on the back.First they said he didn’t hit her at all, now it’s “ well okay he did hit you but HE said he didn’t give you a hard slap so that must be true.” It’s literally a recoded confession versus a “trust me bro”.
And don’t get me started on the gaslighting and denial by his fans. “Didn’t happen, Another amber heard, she’s lying, that recording is illegal, she’s exaggerating, she has bad energy,..etc”. The real problem is they don’t want her to be right. The reality is she could throw any kind of evidence and they will still have 100 new reasons to say she was lying or she deserved it. Hell, theres men in the comments now who admit that they would hit a women they are in an argument with. Really shows the kind of people that would run to defend a man like this.

#ACE ONE PIECE HOW TO#
#ACE ONE PIECE SERIES#
#ACE ONE PIECE FREE#
In the VIZ Manga, Funimation subs and dub, this is called Flame Fence. This was first seen being used against the Marines in Arabasta under the command of Smoker, and was named in a flashback against Whitebeard. Enjomo ( 炎上網 ( えんじょうもう ), Enjōmō ?, literally meaning "Blaze Net"): Ace creates a circle of fire around a selected area, preventing anyone from entering or leaving it.This is called Sun Flare in the VIZ Manga and Heat Haze in the Funimation dub. This was first seen being used to stop Smoker from catching Luffy, neutralizing the former's smoke assault. Kagero ( 陽炎 ( かげろう ), Kagerō ?, literally meaning "Heat Haze"): Ace shoots a stream of fire from the palm of his hand.Despite being weakened by the Yami Yami no Mi severely during his fight against Blackbeard, Ace was still able to skillfully use the fruit's power to inflict some damage to his former subordinate. ĭuring Ace's cover story, the powers of the fruit allowed Ace to rescue a Marine officer and some documents on board a burning ship. According to Gatz, Ace had sunk countless battleships and burned down mighty cities with the fruit's power. Ace names his attacks in Japanese and they are often made of two-word phrases and are based on different mythologies. Ace shares Luffy's penchant for naming his techniques, with the only difference being that Luffy adds the phrase "Gomu Gomu No", followed by the specific name of the attack (usually inspired by a certain object or concept). Ace notably used his powers usually either to fight or to propel his raft. Since he left home three years before Luffy, who did not know that Ace had powers before their reunion in Arabasta, Ace had his powers for no more than three years. The fruit's bestowed powers, as used by Ace, have been used in a variety of ways. Other than that, the user is also affected by the standard Devil Fruit weaknesses. If the magma strikes through the body of the user, it cannot be phased through like most other attacks, and the damage inflicted will remain, as with any normal person's body. The magma can neutralize even the intangibility and heat-immunity of the Mera Mera no Mi, thus leading the user to be burned and completely vulnerable. Magma is considerably hotter than fire, allowing it to overwhelm the Mera Mera no Mi's powers. The Mera Mera no Mi is inferior to the Magu Magu no Mi in terms of elemental hierarchy. When this power clashes against certain other Logia on equal grounds, this seems to come to a stalemate: neither smoke nor ice was able to overcome nor succumb to the flames, instead cancelling each other out when the two elements collided.Īkainu's magma bypassing Ace's fire defenses. Igniting oneself similarly has the added effect of burning an opponent if they had tried to physically harm the user. By turning into fire, the user is capable of letting enemy attacks harmlessly pass through their fiery body or move around quickly in a stream of flames. The flames can also be used to increase the force of physical attacks. With this in mind, the user can create devastating fire-based attacks and gain a high resistance towards most heat-based attacks. In this case, the user is able to create, control, and become fire. The fruit's major strength, like other Logia types, is that it allows the user to produce as well as become the element they control. The Mera Mera no Mi is a round orange fruit, composed of many flame-shaped components with swirl patterns on each one, and has a swirled stem on the top. It is called the Flare-Flare Fruit in the 4Kids dub and Funimation subs.It is called the Flame-Flame Fruit in the Viz Manga and Funimation dub.Meramera ( メラメラ/めらめら, Meramera ?) is the Japanese onomatopoeia for something flaring up/bursting into flames.Protecting someone he loved was well worth his death, as Ace was grateful to have found such a loving family, after all that time he spent as a kid wondering whether if he even belonged in this world. Though his moment of freedom was only short lived, as he protected Luffy from Akainu's attack in exchange for his life.
#ACE ONE PIECE FREE#
Everyone fought, and fought, till suddenly Luffy was able to free Ace from the shackles that bounded him.
#ACE ONE PIECE SERIES#
His final moments in the series were sad ones, as he was sentenced to execution, which resulted in the biggest war in the manga to date. Other than that, he did inherit Conquerors haki, which was shown when he was young.
#ACE ONE PIECE HOW TO#
It has never been revealed if Ace knew how to use Armament or Observation haki, but I assume that he does know them since enemies are much tougher in the New World. Then Ace throws that fireball at the enemy to cause a heavy amount of damage. This technique was shown to be Ace's strongest one, in which he creates a huge fireball resembling the sun. Which translates to "Great Flame Commandment: Flame Emperor".

Love that Sabo appears to be like, exactly as shit at names as Luffy. The poor announcer’s name is ギャッツ/gyattsu (which is ‘Gatz’ in English according to the wiki), Luffy calls him キャッツ/kyattsu (‘cats’) and then presumably going off of that, Sabo calls him ペッツ/pettsu (‘pets’). It’s like the world’s most inept game of telephone. I love them.

I just finished the Dressrosa arc and I am still processing it but two things are certain:
I loved it, and
it murdered me in several ways.
The One Piece theme of freedom vs. oppression is really strong in this arc and is infused into every piece of it from start to finish (Law's backstory, Rebecca's story, the Tontattas, everything).
We've seen slavery before in One Piece, and we've seen people be forced or manipulated into servitude (Nami with Arlong was an early example), but Doffy takes it to another level of cruelty in Dressrosa. Like, not only did people get turned into toys and enslaved, but they were also forgotten by everyone who knew them. People were forced to walk around as toys, doing Sugar/Doflamingo's bidding, seeing their loved ones living their lives without even remembering they ever existed. As dystopic horror scenarios go, that's a doozy.
Tumblr media
The Tontattas were also enslaved, but through deception and because Doffy took advantage of their naïve and trusting nature. (Though he also completely underestimated them and how strong they would be if they ever fought back.)
Another recurring One Piece theme is "places that look great on the surface while hiding a cesspool of oppression and poverty beneath", and it's all there in Dressrosa . I mean, ffs, there's a whole secret underground level where toys, people, and Tontattas are forced to slave away, day and night. Sabo and Luffy even comment on the similarities from their childhood town. They know this kind of bullshit-society only too well.
Tumblr media
And everywhere in Dressrosa, Doflamingo is pulling the strings, literally and figuratively. His string-string power to control people's actions directly is a physical manifestation of this, but he also schemes and lies, threatens and deceives in order to manipulate everyone around him. He pulls the strings in Dressrosa, and he pulls the strings in the New World.
Tumblr media
The Arena, the Coliseum, is like small-scale version of Doffy's world. He sets the rules, he imprisons people there, he forces people to fight each other in order to survive, he pits people against each other, and puts on a grand show to make people look away from the real-life horrors in their city. Later, with the birdcage, Doffy turns all of Dressrosa into an Arena and even sets bounties on his opponents in order to make everyone inside the cage turn on each other, so that he can hold on to his power.
It almost works. But then, people start working together and instead of fighting each other, they fight Doflamingo and his crew.
Tumblr media
All those strong fighters Doffy gathered to manipulate into fighting each other for Ace's devilfruit? They start working together. The townspeople work together, the Tontattas work together, the Straw Hats work together, everyone works together, and this is what really defeats Doflamingo in the end.
Yes, Luffy is the key, but the story is careful to show us that Luffy would not have been able to do it without help. The Straw Hats defeat the Doflamingo execs, Law buys Luffy a whole lot of time with his Gamma Knife attack, Sabo is crucial, the fighters buy Luffy time by banding together, Rebecca and Viola risk their lives by confronting Doflamingo, Franky and the Tontattas push the factory to slow down the contracting birdcage, Barto uses his barrier and has everyone help him hold the cage back, and so on...
Tumblr media
Even Gatz helps by keeping Luffy safe while his haki recharges. Without their help, Luffy would not have been able to win.
And all of that, the fact that he needs help, is not a sign that Luffy is weak. Rather (and this is another recurring theme in One Piece) it's further proof of Luffy's real power (maybe his most dangerous one as Mihawk remarked at Marineford): making friends wherever he goes, and getting people to rally to his side. (For example, if Fujitora hadn't bent Luffy's way, even while pretending he didn't, things would have been a lot worse.)
So in this arc we get Doflamingo, who wants to control and manipulate everyone and everything all the time; fighting against Luffy who just wants people to think for themselves (like he tells Rebecca when he breaks her out of the palace), and please please please not ask him to tell them what to do.
The scene with the Grand Fleet when Luffy tells them that he doesn't want to be someone important; he just wants to be the Pirate King is so awesome in this context, even as it confounds everyone around him (except the Straw Hats, who know Luffy better than anyone.)
Tumblr media
Anyway. I loved this arc, and another theme it highlights is that there's nothing like the power of friendship. Right, Law?

The announcer in the Corrida Colosseum, Gyats has trouble being unbiased during the gladiator fights, and tends to get worked up and show favoritism. During Luffy’s fight with Doflamingo, Gyats helped Luffy by distracting Doflamingo. He also announced Riku Dold III’s return to the throne. His color scheme in the manga went through multiple iterations until eventually the Volume 79 cover finalized his color scheme.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GYATS!!!
