Definitely curious about the genderflip Sandman fic 👀

SAME. as in, this is only a concept on the back burner of my brain because i haven't really worked out a satisfying answer to the central q of the thing which is: what does a gender flip DO to these characters?

because here's the thing. i think 99.9% of the time a genderswap au is unnecessary and boring. (not to mention essentialist as hell.) boys have pussies, girls have dicks, people of all genders are intersex, etc. some of us notgirls and failguys just want to vicariously experience our fave getting his clit sucked or her prostate massaged. i personally hate fics that go "but what if these [cis] dudes were [cis] GIRLS" and then proceed to strip the characters of everything that makes them compelling, that makes THEM, because at that point you might as well just flesh out your OCs and maybe interrogate your internalized misogyny and transphobia while you're at it.

anyways.

in the case of sandman, i am (transparently, obviously) curious about what happens if the Corinthian is not designed to be (read as) a man. in the comix, he very much embodies the fears and risks associated with gayness in the 90s (the AIDS epidemic, the dual violence of the closet and/or being outed, the culture around cruising, intersections of race and class with queerness in U.S. urban areas, etc). in the show that's subtly shifted to be a broader umbrella of queerness as well as a very 21st century anxiety around surveillance/public vs private that also taps into a cultural fascination with serial killers. in both cases, him reading as white, middle-aged U.S. man is a CRUCIAL part of what he signifies. he looks like (and takes advantage of being) someone with a lot of social privilege, across multiple categories. no one is going to question why he's in a fancy hotel, a conference room, a seedy bar, a suburb. OBVIOUSLY that changes if any one of these categories changes. i'm thinking about how and also what that means.

(the dreaming spinoff comix tried to do a Thing with a female Corinthian: while Coco spends a year as a real boy, a trans woman named Echo takes his place in the Dreaming. the spinoff handles Echo...really poorly. [i wrote a whole paragraph here trying to distill her arc but it's tangential to this post so suffice to say: it was Bad.] Echo is posed as this "femme fatale" type because i guess if the Corinthian is a woman, she'd also have to be sexy and alluring to the (heterosexist) male gaze. imho this was a cop-out, but then again...what about that spinoff wasn't.)

on some level i'm not sure the Corinthian could ever be anything besides the Corinthian, if that makes sense. as in, if you change anything about him, maybe then he ceases to be the Corinthian and becomes something else entirely. Dream can take different forms (and Overture has a femme!Dream) because stories can take different forms across cultures and times and species. but the Corinthian is intrinsically tied up in humanity and its biomythic nature. and what we think of as Human, as Sylvia Wynter reminds us, is very much tied up in narratives around identity including race, gender, and class.

at the same time my id absolutely wants a butch lesbian Corinthian who uses he/him pronouns. mostly because lesbian and wlw sex STILL gets dismissed or sanitized or erased or pathologized, even though queer women remain subject to state, police, and domestic violence at higher rates than their straight and/or cis counterparts. (also yes i'm counting my trans hermanas y primas, t*rfs can fuck right off.) but also because i'm a fagdyke with religious trauma who relates very hard to god's failed masterpiece.

~~Got bored so compiled this (pretty extensive) list of film references for faunlet style and aesthetics, might be helpful for anyone looking to delve into and develop their style. Don't take this as some kind of gospel, it's just a bunch of movies and shows that I think can be useful reference points. 5- genderswap au Where my thought experiments on a genderflipped batfam live. There's an outline about how child "Brice" has approximately zero interest in learning girly things and how much later, it catches up to her when Richelle Grayson (stage name: Dicey) arrives and finds out she sucks utterly at makeovers or braiding hair. (But since it's really about spending time together, their common interest in martial arts and punching ne'er-do-wells works out) 7- lazarus pit tim Jason & Tim-- The Pit is a sentient force. Jason thinks he has it under control until he blinks in Gotham and wakes up at a San Francisco home improvement store, browsing the hammers and crowbars. This is a horror story. A couple of Pit driven fugue states lead to Tim with a brand new hole in his head. Jason has to break into the Batcave, evade Batman, barter and negotiate with his own personal monster, and get Tim to the only remaining possible Pit location, all in the next fifteen minutes before he bleeds out. Lazarus Pits are yellow. New dunkees will bond with other affected individuals on sight, which is handy for helping them adjust. 9- reverse robins au This one involves a lot of overhauling. I want to explore what changes when the kids come in reverse order-- for example, Damian feels more secure growing up as an only child with a lot of undivided attention from new-dad Bruce, who is still open minded and unbiased about being a parent. There are tensions with Ra's that he is not as prepared for, however, especially as Damian matures and cuts ties with the League entirely. Tim's death is a consequence of that. Damian takes it hard; if he'd been more of a brother and less of a drill sergeant, maybe Tim wouldn't have been so reckless in attempting to prove himself. Revived, retrained and returned Tim is ghostlike and methodical in his operations. His bitterness is turned inward; the Waynes weren't his family and he doesn't blame them for what happened. In a way he's glad; he can kill so the Bats don't have to. He contributes anonymous, Oracle-like support when it suits him, and becomes preoccupied with serving as guardian angel for Batman's new partner, a young firebrand that, in turn, tracks him down, figures him out and drags him back home. And so on. There's lots of cool things to play with in this au! I hope I can actually get to it sometime lol

(Mis)calculations - Doña Mercedes Guzmán, Mariano's abuela, has so many judgey opinions about so, so many people. Especially those absurd, pretentious Madrigals.

Final Reflections On A Miracle - On her deathbed, Agustín's mother thinks back on her life since arriving in the Encanto, and wonders exactly who the miracle is for.

A Prophet In His Own Land - The Big Bruno Fic, in which he keeps trying and mostly failing to find his place within both his family and his community.

Talk of the Town - WIP. Pepa's nerves are shot while she's pregnant with Antonio. This gives the rest of the kids a reason to make themselves scarce from Casita, spend time with their other families, and dig up dirt on their parents, Abuela, and that guy they can't talk about. Shenanigans ensue.

Damage Control - When the miracle's twentieth anniversary ends in violence, Félix does his best to smooth things over and make sense of it all. A visit with an old friend leaves him with the usual "more questions than answers". A Félix POV one-shot.

Apocrypha - post-canon stories also set in the In-Laws 'verse; so far the theme for these is ✨GAY✨

Raylan/Wynn Duffy

Honestly, it's a shame this pairing isn't more popular but I DO understand it...Wynn Duffy is an odd little man and it's difficult FOR ME to sexualize him even though he's gay coded to all hell. I love him, I just don't have the drive to see him ruined or ruining someone.

That said these two still had BONKERS weird energy in the show it's fascinating and yeah, yeah I could see it. I almost feel the allure. Almost, almost.

Also this fic of them does in fact live in my mind rent free.

Boyd/Ava

Many complicated feelings on them.

During my first watch of the show, I got bamboozled. I 100% thought Boyd was pulling a sly one and only romancing Ava to get close to her so he could get revenge for his brother's death & because he was jealous of Raylan. I was shocked as hell when it ended up being genuine. Then kinda eye-rolled about it because their past history is Boyd being a weird creeper while she was with Bowman.

But as they developed, I was surprisingly into them even though I rarely like MF...but what can I say I'm weak in the knees for villain couples.

I actually thought Ava was going to end up being an outlaw queen. I even at one point thought she was going to be WORSE than Boyd because of how she was treating the girls at Audrey's.

Yeah the show fooled my fool ass again 🤡

I can only see them together in AUs where the last two seasons didn't happen and Ava goes full-throttle outlaw asshole queen.

Objectively I should like them because dark romance is my favorite but...not for them, it just doesn't hit that way for me. In the final season, watching Ava fall into cat-and-mouse abuse games with another Crowder knowing she already survived that once before was A Lot.

Raylan/Carol

They would have hatefucked if the show writers weren't obsessed with blondes: that's what my free space is for. They should have boned and worked out that mutual dislike.

Carol is one of many women that should have been allowed to ride that cowboy, as a treat! Again, don't really like MF but I still enjoyed the hell out of every scene they had together and Carol is my second Justified lady blorbo beloved after Katherine.

Raylan is babygirl and she is also babygirls. They're both awful in their own unique ways!

I'm also fascinated by how outright catty Raylan was with Carol and I really do think it's because he saw a devilish genderflipped version of himself in her: Carol came from a coal background too.

Ava/Winona

Nah not for me. However in AUs...adored them in the exquisite poly goodness that's Ain’t never heard of no three-man battery by praycambrian. They were lovely domestic mfs there.

Elle out here asking the interesting ones! 🤡 What's a line, scene, or exchange you've written that made you laugh? Wow. I think the entire first part of Sanctuary would qualify - y'know, right before it devolves into angst. That bit is a bit too long, though, so here's a close second:

Like a stubborn mule, Max insists on following Charles to the kitchen to ‘show him the ropes.’ At one in the morning, Charles is entirely too tired to argue with Max, so he bundles him up in his blankets and unceremoniously dumps him into an armchair that he drags to the open kitchen so that they’re close to each other. 

“Where are the sharp knives?”

“The big ones?”

“To dice the chicken, yes.”

“Second drawer,” Max says, after a moment of concentration, then appends it with, “I think.”

“Instant soup,” Charles mutters, thoroughly offended, throwing the chicken into the pot with the same callousness as he does with a first pitch in Miami. “Instant soup in my household!”

”It’s my house—"

Charles rounds on him. “Did I fucking ask?”

⛔ Do you have a fic you started, but scrapped? Elle, you know it. So many, so so many, just sitting abandoned in my dusty notes app waiting to be freed from their chains but will never see the light of day. There was one that was actually a retirement fic that I was super fond of but it put me in my feels so much so that I refused to finish it. There are a lot of half-written AUs too. ❌ What's a trope you will never write? I don't read or write major character death, cheating, genderswap/genderflips and poly relationships/love triangles. Cheating tropes especially just leave an incredibly sour taste in my mouth. I also looked up what common fanfic tropes are to answer this and -
