Discover quintessential Switzerland in the realm of the mighty Matterhorn
Discover quintessential Switzerland in the realm of the mighty Matterhorn
Ah, the Matterhorn! One of the most distinctive of all Alpine peaks and a symbol of Switzerland, this mountain exerts a powerful draw on people’s imaginations. Its unique shape is recognizable all over the world. This is partly due to the fact that the Matterhorn’s image has been used on numerous products over the years, including chocolate, cheese and muesli packaging, beer cans, men’s swimwear,…

The prompt for this week’s osws fandom challenge is...*drumroll*
festival season 🎉🎪🎶
Tbh I struggled a lot, and barely managed this snippet (festivals aren’t really my thing). I’d like to say its Justiel but really it’s nothing much of anything...
Inspired by the only festival in Valais I know, and the picture of Ramon on insta where he’s flaunting his beach body and his favourite drink...

Gampel Vibe
rating: G pairing: Daniel Yule/Justin Murisier characters: Daniel Yule, Justin Murisier, Ramon Zenhäusern, Marco Odermatt, Gino Caviezel, Thomas Tumler length: 500 words
The sponsor had gone all out. There was a long bar stocked to the brim with drinks, meat was sizzling on a barbecue serving only their guests, and the view of the main stage was phenomenal. A constant stream of people coming from and going to the rest of the festival grounds mingled with the guests watching the concert from afar, and their chatter, together with the booming bass from the stage, formed a cloud of noise that filled the entire valley. Everybody seemed happy to be here, under the burning sunshine and the heat of the Valais.
Everybody except the five men seated around a table hidden at the very edge of the sponsor's area. The sharp, pungent smell of muscle rub poisoned the air around them, and Daniel turned up his nose as he stopped by the table together with Ramon.
"You stink up the whole place," he said to the giant-slalom team hanging like discarded string puppets in the chairs.
"Oh yeah?" Gino asked. "Come over here so I can hit you."
Ramon frowned but still handed out the bottles of juice he was carrying.
"No beer?" Marco asked.
"Beer costs extra," Ramon answered. "You can go fetch that by yourself. I can't believe I wasted five of my free tickets on you guys."
Thomi picked up his juice with a pained expression, and took a sip. "We're very grateful to concentrated water for the invitation"
"Focus Water," Ramon corrected. "Also it's supposed to help against sore muscles, but I'm not so sure. It never helps against mine, anyway."
"We don't have 'sore muscles'," Marco said. "Sore muscles is what you get after a normal training."
"And what did you do?" Daniel asked.
"We did one of Kurti's special pre-season two-in-one cardio-strength workouts," Gino explained. "It's different."
Ramon snorted. "Really?"
"You've never had to live through this hell and it shows," Thomi replied. "Otherwise you wouldn't laugh."
Daniel rolled his eyed, and lightly kicked against Justin's sprawled legs. "I get the rest, they're all wimps, but you?"
With an immense effort, Gino snatched his bottle from the table and hurled it at Daniel before collapsing over the table. "Ow, my arm!" he sobbed.
The bottle missed Daniel by a mile, and rolled over the trampled grass.
"I wanted to go to the main stage for the next act," Daniel continued, ignoring Gino and his pained whimpering.
Justin shook his head in desperation. "I can't walk! You don't get it, he had us run all the way to Gornergrat and then back to Riffelalp where we had to lift tree trunks."
Daniel sighed, and thought for a moment. "You're really ruining my Gampel-vibe," he eventually declared, and grabbed Justin's hands. "Come on!"
"Didn't you lis…" Justin tried to protest but Daniel turned around, and bent his knees. "Oh."
"Get up!" Daniel ordered, and turned his head.
"Ouch…ow, fuck!" Justin swore as he heaved his body out of the chair and was taken piggyback by Daniel.
"See?" Daniel said as he hoisted Justin higher on his back.
"Isn't he heavy?" Ramon asked warily.
"He's not heavy," Daniel answered, panting slightly. "I mean, he is, but he's also my friend. So, if you need us, we're at the main stage."
Justin put his chin on Daniel's shoulder. "You're the best," he sighed.
The rest of the team watched as Daniel and Justin disappeared in the crowd.
"You know, I'd also like to go to the main stage," Marco piped up after a while.
"No!" Ramon said, and followed Daniel.

Mythical. Majestic. Charming. The triangular shape of the Matterhorn, the mountain that is the ultimate symbol of Zermatt and one of the main icons of Switzerland itself, fascinates. Imposing on the alpine horizon, as if pointing to the sky, this mountain of such perfect aesthetic proportions has always been a kind of magnet for mountaineers – challenging, magical, thought-provoking.
But today the Matterhorn captivates not only adventurers but also the most sedentary of tourists. From the center of Zermatt, the he is easily visible, grand and imposing, on clear and bright days – and is always a magnet to look at. At dawn, when the clouds dissipate, the first rays of sunlight create an almost golden light on its summit. And its unmistakable outline is still visible from the city even under the moonlight, majestic.
If conquering it for the first time was such a hard and painful task that it cost lives, today climbing the Matterhorn is a task carried out with care by mountaineers of all levels in the warmer months. And, throughout the year, it is possible for tourists to reach it in comfort and safety, without giving up the perfect panoramic views, with the gondolas that take you to the Klein Matterhorn and the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise.
From the top of Gornergrat, with the mountain always playing hide-and-seek with the clouds and looming unmistakably against the Alps, one might ask: have you seen enough of the Matterhorn? And your answer will probably be the same as the Zermatt people: no, impossible!
