I wanted to practice dogs, so naturally I drew Kakashi and his pack.
Once again, I have no idea what anything other than Kakashi’s bed looks like so I put them all on my sofa. I have a corner sofa and Shiba is in my spot. I put them all in my living room autism nest lol (minus some squishmallows).

To Become a Pack: Pakkun
“Now, this is very important, Kakashi” Sakumo's voice was serious, so he straightened his position to show he was listening and paying attention. “A ninken is not a normal dog. They are warriors, just like us, and they deserve our respect. You won’t own your ninken, you’ll start a pack with them, understood?”
“Hai!”
--------------------------------------------------
Have you ever wondered how Kakashi got his ninken?
Curious about the background story of each of the hounds?
Well, this story is all about that so, let's start with Pakkun!
Each chapter will be about one dog or a group of them, as well as something extra at the end:
Pakkun
Uhei
Bull
Biscuit & Guruko
Shiba, Urushi & Akino
First Extra: Uniforms!
Second Extra: Epilogue (after the War)
Updates will come as I have time to write an edit, but I hope to finish before the end of May :)

Kakashi’s conversations with his pack:
Kakashi: So, you’ve messed up a bit, and our target now knows who we are and what we look like. How do we fix this?
Guruko: A knife.
Kakashi: Um, no.
Guruko: Okay, well, how about a bigger knife?
Kakashi, starting to sweat: Guruko, we can’t just stab people every time they upset us.
Guruko, nodding: You know, you have a point boss.
Kakashi, sighing in relief: Okay, so what other suggestions do you have?
Guruko: A brick.
Kakashi: I-

OH YEEEEAS complex feelings of jealousy when seeing someone dead improve faster than you... It might not be a competition but surely feels like one
And his face when the lady complimented his yakisoba and not his performance 🤌🤌🤌 For her, it might have meant nothing but the pain on his face says everything

THE KAGES AND THEIR GREEN BEASTS
But a modern day AU take with the whole family and the ninken! Ningame is chilling at home, thank you very much. :) This thing took much longer to sketch and color than I anticipated. Hahhhh hahahaha.
Headcanons and easter eggs after the cut
RasaDai: Is it crack? Yes. Is it impossible? Yes, yes, they’re both dead. Do I still ship them? HELL YES. My old old man yaoi (crack) rarepair. Rasa inherits the nearly bankrupt firm from his deceased bastard of a father, and had to devote his whole life to work. He loses Karura after she gives birth to Gaara, and now he’s a single dad whose grown up kids hate his guts. Can this old man still find love with an older DILF? Except he’s definitely not going to wear that green tracksuit. (also that’s Suna designer wear on Rasa and Pakkun’s carrier)
KakaGai: These boys. These men. Husbands, rivals, friends, eternal loves. Kakashi with his jorts and baby pink crocs 😂 (thanks @urieskooki for the color pick) with ANBU gibbets. Gai with Daytime Tiger-inspired shoes! I love having Bisuke perching on Gai and adopting his sparkles ✨. Kakashi giving Gai the ‘I’m pinning you down later’ look. Also, if you really want to know what Kakashi’s reading, check the tags. ;)
GaaLee: My loves, my babies 🥰 Okay I gave Gaara his Shippuden pants bands and his shoes are gourd inspired. He’s excited to finally get to hold a puppy and promptly carries the meanest-looking one (Urushi, surprised, gives a tentative tail wag). In the meantime, Lee has their snacks and drinks ready ❤️ The man is smitten with Gaara. He is composing love songs for him as we speak. He’s also rocking dragon-print kicks (I used my own dragon design from the CNY card).
The Ninken: Ok some headcanons. All the dogs were adopted by Kakashi, except for Pakkun who was his dad’s pet before he died. Pakkun prefers to ride in his carrier than to walk in his older years. Akino, being partially blind, sticks close to his emotional support dog (Pakkun). Shiba is giving puppy eyes to Rasa in case he can get pets. Guruko being a naughty baby running between people’s legs. Bull is just chilling with his new collar—Kakashi replaced the spikes with pompoms for comfort. Uhei likes Lee best and stays close to him.
This image wouldn’t have been completed without encouragement and feedback from @egregiousderp @bayheart @urieskooki Glugchat and the good people who enable me at the KakaGai discord. Mwah love you all.

Pakkun knows it's time. Has felt it coming for a long while, now.
His muzzle is grey, his joints ache when he tries to climb the stairs outside, so he uses Gai's ramp instead. He can't jump up onto the couch anymore, but that's all right because there are always plenty of cushions for him on the floor.
It's one of the nice things about being back at the Hatake Estate, ever since Kakashi returned with his partner and his Rival shortly before welcoming the little one that totters around, now, knocking into low tables and screaming for his parents.
Pakkun is grateful to have witnessed all of it, grateful that Kakashi senses their time running short, too, and no longer dismisses him unless Pakkun asks.
He doesn't know how to tell Kakashi that it's time. Doesn't know how to grumble the words I love you, but I have to go.
It was never supposed to be like this. Pakkun is a ninja hound, a tracker with an analytical mind and a skill for violence. He and Kakashi made a pact when the latter was still a boy. Pakkun remembers how he didn't flinch as he sliced his thumb open to sign the contract, remembers the strange aloofness he exuded, so unexpected for a pup so young.
Had Sakumo not died, Pakkun imagines he and Kakashi might have maintained a purely professional relationship.
But watching that stoic child crumble into a broken version of the pup he should have been allowed to be tugged at something within Pakkun with a ferocity he typically reserved for missions.
He slept beside Kakashi that night, the way he had once watched over the boy's mother on the eve of his birth. Perhaps it was not exactly a mission, but to protect Sakumo's progeny seemed well within the parameters of his duties at the time.
The thing which blossomed soon after that--affection or respect or whatever it might be--had been unintentional. Without a pup of his own, Pakkun found himself drawn to Kakashi's side increasingly often beyond the scope of missions. Found himself grateful when Kakashi summoned him on his days off, so they could spend time quietly within one another's presence as Kakashi read and Pakkun napped in a sun spot at his feet.
Now, as Pakkun rests on a cushion, watching Kakashi smile with his family as the little boy in his lap unsuccessfully fights off sleep, the creases at the edges of his eyes tell a story of both tragedy and triumph; one Pakkun is proud to have witnessed. To have played an important role in.
He knows he should do something. Make it obvious. That he should lift his grizzled muzzle and say, Boss, to gather the room's attention. Pakkun knows Kakashi would hand his son to Gai or his partner and direct his attention to the little pug he's known all his life, even before his life began.
He's become keenly aware of Pakkun's age in recent months, especially, taking care to spend extra time with him whenever possible.
But Pakkun doesn't want to interrupt the happy moment before him, so he simply huffs a low sigh as he settles his chin on his crossed paws. His eyelids feel heavy, his breath moves slowly in and out, unhurried. He almost laughs because why would his lungs hurry when there is nowhere else he'd rather be?
Bull and Uhei and Shiba and Akino will understand. Bisuke and Guruko and Urushi will not, but that's okay. They will still have one another. Still have Kakashi.
Even without their diminutive leader, Pakkun knows the pack will fight on. Welcome new ninken into their ranks. He knows one day, Kakashi's pup will sign a contract of his own, though he isn't sure the boy will be as composed as his father when he does.
He's inherited all the best parts of both parents, and Pakkun thinks the fact that he's more emotive than Kakashi was at the same age is probably a good thing.
A soft chuckle fills Pakkun's ears and he looks up at Kakashi one last time, notes the twinkling joy in his dark eyes as he listens to Gai tell a raucous story, rocking softly as his son sleeps, face tucked against his chest. Peaceful despite Gai's booming voice.
Pakkun knows it's time. Has felt it coming for a long while, now. He doesn't know if he will stay here, or if his death will act as a dismissal, sending him back to the place where his packmates are.
Whatever happens, he only hopes Kakashi will forgive him for not interrupting the moment to say goodbye. It's too good a moment to shatter with sadness, even if he does wish he could say one more time that he is proud of the man Kakashi has become, of the life he has built.
But Kakashi knows already; words have never been necessary between them to be fully understood. A gift of their pact so many are never lucky enough to experience.
As his eyes slide closed, Pakkun knows Kakashi will understand. Even if he's hurt or angry at first, he's never been one for emotional farewells, either. It is gift enough to know you have been truly cared for. An even greater gift for Pakkun to know Kakashi will be well loved even after he is gone.
I love you, but I have to go. And now I know you'll be okay without me.

*Kakashi’s ninken, gathered in the kitchen*
Pakkun: Okay now remember, we do our best and try to scare the piss out of him, right?
Bull: He thinks we’re still gone, so us jumping out of the cabinets at him will turn his hair even whiter!
Biscuit: Roger! Serves him right for “forgetting” to let us in before it started raining last week!
Uhei: Shhh — places everyone! I can smell him coming!
*all of the dogs scramble to hide in the cabinets or under the counter*
Shiba, whispering: Wait … *sniffs* he’s not alone …
Urushi, also whispering: Damn … it’s that man in the green jumpsuit. The annoying one.
Pakkun: Gai?
Akino: Remember when he made us run up that mountain with him?
Guruko: And had us take turns jumping on his back while he did push-ups?
Pakkun: We might have to try this another time. We need to get out of here before they come in.
Biscuit: Why??
Pakkun: Because Gai has an unusually developed sense of smell. He’ll know we’re here and —
Gai, loudly, in the living room: ‘Kashi? Are the pups here? *sniffs* Smells like they are …
Kakashi: They’re away right now. It’s just your imagination.
Gai: That’s too bad … I bought some new pet grooming clippers that I wanted to try out on them. I thought it would be cute to give them all haircuts that match mine!
The ninken:
Gai: But I guess it’ll have to wait until next time. I’m starved; you got any snacks in the kitchen? I —
*loud crashes and shuffling is heard as the dogs all leave their hiding spots and race out the back door*
Kakashi, smiling: Thanks, Gai. I knew those little gremlins were going to try to scare me soon.
Gai, kissing him: Any time, rival.

Trick or treat!!
Tumblr media
Puppy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *gives all the pets*
“And,” zipping up the costume, Kakashi leaned back to admire his work. “Done!”
“Finally,” Pakkun huffed, flopping down in his spot with a small grunt. “Why are we doing this again?”
“Nakano wanted to dress up as Gai this year,” he explained for the hundredth time. “And we thought about just summoning ningame, but he’s still a tortoise. He moves pretty slow.”
Pakkun narrowed his eyes. “He told you no, didn’t he?”
“Me? No. Gai? Absolutely,” recalling the scene Kakashi chuckled. “So you’re stuck with the job. She needs a ningame to complete the costume.”
“And that had to be me? It couldn’t be akimo?”
“He would rip the costume apart before i even got it on him.”
“Guruko?”
“I value my life, thanks.”
“Bull?”
“He might actually enjoy it, but he’d also leave Nakano in the dust in his excitement.”
“Right,” all of this was true. Pakkun knew the hounds even better than Kakashi and they would do exactly as he stated.
He was the only one who would stick by Nakano’s side and play the role of ‘Ningame’ perfectly, and he hated that about himself.
“I expect treats.”
“Gai just went to buy you a whole bag,” Kakashi assured him. “You’ll do great.” Placing a hand on Pakkun’s head, he gave him a little scratch behind the ear and laughed when Pakkun immediately fell leaned into his touch. “Good boy.”

some Kakashi ninken headcanons? sure :)
-Bisuke is sassy. he will abuse you so bad. yeah he means it all affectionately, but like. he doesn't show it.
-Pakkun too. he's just more blunt and straightforward.
-Bull is very used to being summoned on Kakashi's solo missions when he's either too exhausted/injured to go on, or is about to pass out.
-theyre all aware Kakashi is accident prone and bully the hell out of him for it, but Pakkun clearly does it the most.
-Uhei's the fastest and is often summoned to take messages somewhere or get help.
-Guruko acts motherly. if Kakashi's being bratty or is walking on a wound he shouldn't be, he'll constantly mother him, telling him to summon (Pakkun to humble him) or Bull, or Uhei, or to take a break. (he's too good at his job, and Kakashi hates it.)

Will be around six chapters long and most likely people will cry (I'm doing it while writing), but I promise it'll be worth it! ❤️

[AO3 LINK]
You would think that being the last member of a clan meant being the one to know everything about it, including its vast history, the ancestry, past settlements and clan feuds. Unfortunately, Kakashi has rather limited knowledge when it comes to the Hatake clan. His father didn't live long enough to teach him himself, and Kakashi didn't put much more of an effort in learning on his own time after his only parent's suicide. He had other things to worry about at the time, and then after that, he kept having more and more other things to worry about. The most he knows is that in the past, the Hatake clan were once farmers. To be more specific, the clan was a civilian clan, and while most if not all of the members knew how to wield jutsu on some level, they had focused more on using said jutsu for things like watering their crops, making ash and churning their soil with it, controlling the electrical conductivity in the soil, and summoning well-trained packs to ward away pests preying on their fields or coops.
Having grown up during a time of war, Kakashi had honestly forgotten the knowledge. It was ridiculous to even think about. Imagining a life where he was peacefully using jutsu for nothing but ordinary, daily tasks was just not something he was capable of. Even now, he struggled to see himself doing it. To have Pakkun guarding a little fenced in chicken coop, Bisuke and Akino surveying the fields, Ūhei and Guruko herding sheep, Shiba, Urushi, and Bull hunting out in the woods… And Kakashi doing what? What on earth would Hatake Kakashi be doing on a farm? Hunting bandits? Investigating a crime scene? Watching over his cute little genin, of which he doesn’t have, completing a simple little D-rank, pulling weeds out of the field?
He just can’t picture it. He could picture anyone else but himself.
Which… is an idea. What sort of person could he picture taking care of a farm with a bunch of ninken? What sort of Hatake can he see doing such a thing? Not himself, and not his father, certainly not. Someone… who breathes in and genuinely appreciates the fresh air around him. Someone who runs alongside of his ninken with breathless glee, uncaring of the sort of picture he makes in doing so. Someone who loves life and the life he lives, someone who makes connections without even thinking about it and who can smile widely in the face of strangers without any suspicion.
Body moving on its own, Kakashi finds himself hunting a buck. He works quickly, preserving most of the meat, and mixing up a bit of yummy dog chow for his pack, using leftover meat and some other edible flora he’s picked up along the journey. Then, he works on the hide, making a couple shadow clones to assist. It’s lengthy work, taking too much time for someone who just abandoned his village, but then again, he doubts the village will notice his absence any time soon, so it is time that he fortunately can spare. What he has planned will take days, and he predicts people will be coming after him in about a… week, possibly. He’s far enough away that he can spend the next five days without interruption.
It’s a long five days. He scrapes the hide clean, soaks it in a river, wrings it out, brains it, softens it, then smokes the results. For the normal civilian, this would be incredibly labor intensive, although Kakashi finds himself having an easier time of it. Even still, it’s not something that can be rushed, and while he’s working on his spontaneous side-project, he has to spend some time working on building himself a camp that will last for the next five days, carving some wood, digging out pits, making a tent, etc.
There’s also the awkward tension between him and his ninken that he needs to work on. If he had summoned Pakkun alone, he likely wouldn’t have noticed anything amiss, given how he seems to be acting completely normal. The rest of the pack, however? You could almost describe them as skittish. They subtly look at him from the corners of their eyes when they think he can’t see, leaving space between them and him. It’s understandable, if he sorts through his memories of this life. He’s acting much differently than they’re used to. Less broken, he supposed.
They’re not unhappy about it, that much he can tell. Likely, they just can’t tell whether this is a permanent change or not. They don’t want to get their hopes up. Which is painful, because he knows there have been times in the past where they had gotten their hopes up, only to have that hope mercilessly crushed not long afterwards. And he was the one to do that, intentional or not.
There had been times where he was just on the cusp of healing. Of taking that step forward towards bettering himself. And inevitably, he would turn his back on the thought, scoffing at the idea that someone so shattered could piece themselves back together. Honestly speaking, he was almost suspicious by how often it had happened. Not that it mattered anymore, of course, but it was still suspicious.
Oh well.
In any case, he’s aware that the tension between him and his ninken will likely continue for some time. The best he can do is leave them out for as long as possible, getting them used to his presence. And slowly, they do, if only marginally. By the end of the fourth day, he notes that his pack has inched closer to him than they had previously, surrounding him on all sides as he worked on carving out a wooden base for a mask. He was lucky to find a black walnut tree, one which had lost quite a large, sturdy branch. He’d gathered quite a few walnuts, and enough wood for more than just his current project.
By the end of the fifth day, his deer hide has been smoked, and he gingerly applies a portion of it to the wooden mask base he had carved. It only covered the upper half of his face, so he was left with quite a bit of hide left over, which he decided to store for the time being. Processing the hide was long enough after all, and he needed to get moving soon. In the end, he’s got a canine-inspired mask, with simple seals applied to it that allows him to see through the wood and leather, rather than needing holes to see through.
It’s obviously not the first time he’s made a disguise for himself. He’s been disguised as both male and female servants, as photographers and entertainers, unfortunate souls from the slums, high-end Geisha, and every other role you could think of in-between. It wouldn’t even be the first time he’s made a role without much thought of a backstory, really. He knows how to improvise, and how to keep his story straight despite unplanned details.
But something feels different. Putting on this mask, one he took the time to carefully craft with his own two hands, felt entirely unlike any face he’s worn before. It’s something new, something refreshing.
“Arata,” he whispers. His ninken perk up, looking towards him with interest. It occurs to him that he hasn’t said a word to them since he had first summoned them five days ago. “My name is Arata, now.”
Pakkun looks over his shoulder, having been previously napping by a tree. A singular eye roves over his form, and the pug huffs.
“Arata could have made the mask cuter.”
“Oi,” Kakashi pouts, and oh they definitely can see it now. He can’t exactly deny that he pouts when it’s in full view for everyone to see. “The mask is cute!”
“You look like a fox,” Ūhei snickers.
“None of you appreciate my artistry,” Kakashi sniffs. He’s prepared for the onslaught of scents that brings. “It’s a husky. Clearly.”
“Clearly,” Akino says sarcastically, getting a few laughs out of the pack. Kakashi feels bullied.
“Arata is above this,” he tells himself, taking in a breath and getting into character. “No shame here! I don’t care what any of you think! Arata is happy with his mask and will be happy no matter what you say!”
The pack laughs even louder then, closing in on him and crowding his legs. He dutifully ignores them, and starts moving. Time to get rid of any traces of a camp, then get going.
