Chronic stress is something that way too many of us suffer from without really knowing the consequences. Stressful lifestyles lead to numerous changes to the functionality of the body especially with all the areas shown with this diagram. I want you to pay particular attention to the areas that connect 2 areas together. The Adrenals, Thyroid, Liver, GI (gastrointestinal tract), Immune system and ANS (autonomic nervous system). Since becoming a functional health and wellness practitioner, I am finally adopting this quote. I have often been seen as an all of nothing person and to my credit I have done pretty well in life. I will say regaining health is something you can't just power through or force. It is all about those small steps that help build momentum, confidence, listening/ understanding your body and distressing. If there is one post I would want the whole wide world to see this would be it. Stress is no joke and what is scary about this stat is that it was found in 2010! After my ordeal with stress I know how quicky and devastating this evil demon can be. Throwback Thursday me, @hadamo78 and @lucakane looking rather happy with ourselves after a hard workout @toughlovefitnessuk. I look back at this photo and think I look pretty healthy but in reality I was far from it. I had been diagnosed with severe candida, my gut health was terrible, my lifestyle habits were shocking and depended on caffeine or sugar to survive the day. Unfortunately the health and fitness industry believe that the aesthetics of an individual determines how healthy they are instead of focusing on how we feel and our ability to function optimally. Energy levels, strong immune systems, ability to move freely (without pain) and overall wellness/wellbeing should be the basic foundations to health. Yes, looking good is important but feeling amazing is what we should aspire to. The quality and quantity of sleep is a crucial aspect of health that is often overlooked in today's non stop society, even though it has been proven to have an adverse impact on some very serious diseases. Sleep deprivation both long and short term has a negative effect on our physical/ mental capacity, weakens our immune system, causes a stress response causing vital organs to shut down and not allowing our recovery hormone (DHEA) to help rebuild the body = catabolism (breakdown of body to sustain energy levels). Something I know all to well especially after falling victim to: I eat healthy food so I must be healthy...wrong! If our gut health is compromised or stressed our ability to digest food can be extremely difficult. For me, I was a nutritionist dream; I didn't eat sugar, wheat, gluten, processed foods, GMO's, pretty much removed anything that I thought could harm me. However, because of my health, the permeability of intestine, stomach acid levels and immune function was well below par. I continued to be malnourished, continued to get sick, lacked energy and eventually became sensitive to vegetables and other foods deem healthy! From this I now know healing the gut to operate functionally is fundamental when maintaining overall health. Today = collecting samples for cortisol/salvia/ adrenals test and food sensitivity/ blood test. If anyone is serious about getting healthy, these tests are the best and most accurate to use. These tests will give you a snap shot of what is happening to you internally from an energy and recovery prespective. So what I have my wonderful clients doing here is some functional range conditioning (FRC). I was introduced to this method of training last year and I love it. What my clients are demonstrating is a technique that allows their hamstring muscles to neurologically fire in a shortened position. Next month I will be heading to the wonderful sunshine coast to do my advanced health practitioner mentorship = time to get tested. The tests you can see are a food sensitivity and cortisol test to help identify what's happening inside my gut and how my energy levels are throughout the day. These tests are excellent indicators to see if your body is working an optimal function, stressed or adrenally fatigued. So over the weekend I decided to do a lil experiment to see which breakfast was healthier and more cost effective. In the top right hand corner is my homemade activated nut granola and the clean paleo nut granola. For a packet of clean paleo that only had 7 ingredients with 7 servings, cost $12 per pack. In comparison, the homemade batch has 15 ingredients, has at least 14 servings and cost $10-12. I also mentioned that the homemade batch was activated which enables humans to digest nuts easier especially if your gut health is compromised. So overall my batch has more ingredients, worked out cheaper overall and is healthier, the reason for this is that healthy eating doesn't need to be taxing on the wallet all it needs is a lil prep work and organisation. Decided to practice what I preach and incorporate bone broth into my curry this evening.
