steve blushes at his mothers question. "just... a friend."

she gives him a knowing look, hums, but doesnt say anything. steve watches as her careful hands wrap the poster he spent hours trying to get. it took a lot of phone calls between him and his father, who has been away for work since the start of december. he hadnt wanted steve to "abuse his connections", which steve had thought was code for "embarrass me".

whatever. steve got the poster in the end, just in time for christmas.

and the hours of phones calls, pleading with his father, and pitiful looks from his mother were all worth it the second steve saw the shock and joy on your face when you opened the gift.

then you threw your arms around him and steves brain momentarily froze. he figured youd like the gift, but he never thought youd hug him and yet here he is, with you in his arms.

after his shock wears off, steve hugs you back with such a ferocity that hes scared hes hurt you for a second, but you only wrap tighter around him and bury your face in his sweater. hes surrounded by you. every inch of you is pressed against steve and he suddenly resents jonathan for having free access to your hugs.

"i love it, steve." you whisper, your words muffled by his sweater.

steves heart stutters a bit, and he just needs you as close as possible to him. he rests his head against yours, pulls you in even closer, and god. this was all worth it.

he'd take a million more lectures from his father if it meant he could make you happy again. steves never been hugged like this before. he thinks hes addicted to it already.

then mrs. waters walks in and steve thinks youll pull away, hide yourself in embarrassment being caught showing affection to him, but as always... you surprise steve.

you pull away, sure, but your arm stays wrapped around steves waist as you talk to your boss. you dont shy away from being seen with him, and something in steves brain goes haywire. he wants this, he wants more of this.

well, whatever this is.

he wants more of your open affection. and hes really, really excited that it seems like youre willing to give it to him, now.

steves kinda mad that all it took was buying you a christmas gift.

(it was expensive and worth steves entire allowance, but still. he wouldve done it sooner had he known).
