Between Christmas and Jan 4 we have even more new friendly fowl, one duckling and several baby chicks. We are hoping for more ducks very soon. One of our Silkie hens has shown signs of being broody gathering a large clutch of eggs. She sat on eggs that were hers and some others from other chicks and ducks too. It’s been a busy and exciting day. We watched the inauguration and got several jobs done too. Tony helped me move chicks and ducks from one brooder to another and give the brooder container a good clean. The old litter was placed into our raised bed and mixed in with the new leaf debris from the park cleaning Monday. The friendly fowl are allowed to go in the raised beds to help with the composting. The chicks and ducks from one brooder were moved to one with a drip waterer made from an empty creamer jug, they are adjusted. The drip system keeps the container cleaner, especially from the mess ducks are known to make. Most of today’s chores invoked caring for animals though Tony delivered pies he baked and I planted more seeds. Tony’s sweet potato pies are the best ever! Our two youngest ducklings, a Khaki Campbell and a Pekin. They love the attention they’ve received from me doting over them. There’s baking going on! Days one and two of baking for our holiday packages and individual items. There’s dough being made, the yeast is proofing, the shaping and actual bake followed by packaging. Tony bakes cinnamon rolls for us as we worked. In photos 1 and 2 you can see cinnamon rolls without icing but one is topped with toasted pecans. A roll with the coffee was excellent. Photo 4 is a pan of 1 dozen rolls ready for their second rising. They are in the frig until time to bake. It’s so hard to resist all the goodies around like that #sweetpotatopie . Our campers ordered loaves of bread that went out to them this morning and we’re baking for the orders to be picked up today. We will do more tomorrow for the Wednesday orders that include giveaways thanks to the donations that are coming in to support our community members. Thank you all so much. Big day today y’all. Tony and a friend processed 14 chickens and 3 ducks. What a day! My job was to take care of the regular chores and be supportive. I did weigh and label the birds then put them away for the farm stand Monday and Tuesday and filling orders. There ten more chickens that can be processed any day so 14 isn’t all available. Orders are coming in for just about everything. The ducks are already spoken. Chickens can be purchased in a package or separately. His uniform is in the mail!!! My daughter Meagan left three dresses she wore during her time working in the historical tour industry and I’m wearing one. Their uniforms and accouterments were the same basic uniform as their white counterparts. Tomorrow evening we we gather with guests under the boughs of live oaks, tall pines and magnificent magnolias to sit around fires , partake of a traditional Gullah meal and pay tribute to those servicemen who served in the United States Colored Troops and the Montfort Point Marines. We will tell their stories, sing songs from their time and enjoy our surroundings. The menu will feature dishes prepared with the produce from our field and other local and regional farms.
