Roxbury Sunflower Project 2022
I hope you’ve been wondering where the Roxbury Sunflower Project has been all summer. It is our fifth year of planting a beautiful idea with sunflower seeds. We begin by giving away over 10,000 seeds to the public. Then we plant mini sunflower landscapes throughout Boston. Our launch took place at the Grove Hall Public Library on May 14th. It’s where we began back in 2018. Here are some cool photos taken by London Parker-McWhorter and Ekua Holmes.
sparc! the Artmobile and its team helped kick off the season with a seed giveaway, art making station and seedling planting. All ages came out to help plant sunflowers, pick up free seed packets and activity kits and to even create their own crown of flowers.

The Eucalypts are a species that can cause a great deal of devastation during uncontrolled fires. Eucalyptus burn at a very high temperature due to their high oil content, making them hard to extinguish and control. Eucalypts with rough bark, like the Messmate Stringybark (Eucalyptus obliqua) have epicormic buds (dormant growth buds) deep beneath the bark which are protected from fire. When the tree is burnt and the foliage removed, the epicormic buds are triggered into life and they start to grow. Once these buds sprout, the tree then begins to regrow all the lost foliage, and gradually recovers in time. — Proceeds from Seeds of Hope will go to Firesticks Alliance Indigenous Corporation. @firesticks.alliance.network is an Indigenous-led network that aims to re-invigorate the use of cultural burning by facilitating cultural learning pathways to fire & land management. It is an initiative for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to look after Country, share their experiences, and collectively explore ways to achieve their goals. Implementing fire to enhance ecosystem health within culturally connected landscapes improves habitat condition and connectivity. corona reverie
how many time have i
considered
the magnitude of my inhalation?
spin and spin and the rush of air
envelopes me in a balmy breeze
as i spiritedly spiral
the dandelion seeds i spray
erupt the air with
glittery particles
“con” and “sidra”
i am with these blooming stars
spin and spin and the field flurries
by in verdant sweeps
my star-speckled breath
sets the florets free
the exhalation of my query
is caught between the teeth
of my sunburnt dreams
spin and spin and the air is infused
with a merry kaleidoscopic vapor
the seeds evaporate
in a wishful whisper
shimmery streaks that mock
i am more fragile than they
spin and spin and abruptly i gasp
my mask wafts downward
landing blue and stark
on spiky grass
sunlit hopes sigh in my mind’s eye
i stop to retrieve it
ending my reverie
masks are ubiquitous
i was not afraid of my next
breath until this awkward year
spin and spin and supposed safety stifles
this social atmosphere reeks
unease fills my nostrils
as i don my “essential” camouflage
continuing the corona charade
modern mask masquerade
how many times have i
considered
the gravity of my next inhalation?

It’s been a busy and exciting day. We watched the inauguration and got several jobs done too. Tony helped me move chicks and ducks from one brooder to another and give the brooder container a good clean. The old litter was placed into our raised bed and mixed in with the new leaf debris from the park cleaning Monday. The friendly fowl are allowed to go in the raised beds to help with the composting. The chicks and ducks from one brooder were moved to one with a drip waterer made from an empty creamer jug, they are adjusted. The drip system keeps the container cleaner, especially from the mess ducks are known to make. Most of today’s chores invoked caring for animals though Tony delivered pies he baked and I planted more seeds. Tony’s sweet potato pies are the best ever!
