love the message of inej saying she would fight for kaz, but could not heal him. because she would not waste her life trying. love that she realises that love is not enough to move on from something as traumatic as what they both went through - love that that message is stated in the book. because inej as a character wants freedom more than anything, from tante heleen, from ketterdam and the dregs and even kaz. and she’s willing to walk away from him for herself, which is not a selfish choice but actually a very healthy one, especially for inej. and i love kanej, i love that he reunites her with her family, that their ending is open and shows the steps they take towards healing, that they end by holding hands and inej gets vengeance on pekka and a ship she uses to carry out her justice.

we haven't talked enough about how the Bathroom Scene ends with Kaz dramatically saying "if you ever cared about me, you won't follow. you'll stay here" as he walks off to his potential death and then the literal next page opens with Inej internally monologuing "well that was offensive. What would I even do...go home and marry a normal man? Yeah right. You're it for me, buddy" as she stalks him over the rooftops

Thank literally everything that Kaz isn't in PJO because that man HATES bad parents (the fact that he BET MONEY that Van Eck wouldn't kill Wylan which he would never do if he had so much as a notion that he wouldn't win and was disgusted when he lost) and is the smartest person ever.
The gods wouldn't stand a chance. Olympus would fall in a week

Given the fact that that we know, canonically, that Jesper and Inej both like Kaz, and that Anika tried to flirt with him at the end of Crooked Kingdom. I fully believe that every fucker in the dregs has a crush on Kaz.
Every single person he's recruited to the gang just said yes cause he's hot. Like this is how every conversation Per Haskell has goes:
Haskell: Ok, I need you to go on a job with Kaz tonight
Dreg: The hot one? Yeah absolutely
Haskell: *slams his head against the desk*

I keep thinking about this line from ck.
this is the culmination of the van eck job; the 'post-credits' scene that tells us where each of the characters is going forward. nina is 'going to find a way to make it matter', which teases row. inej is starting her journey of ending slavery on the seas. jesper and wylan's futures are explicitly intertwined and implicitly turning to politics.
what does kaz's line mean? what was leigh trying to foreshadow?
I refuse to believe the phrasing of it means nothing, because in the context of this scene, it can't mean nothing. this is kaz's next big journey. and it also references another big conversation from ck:
Tumblr media
this scene from the geldrenner bathroom is so important because, in it, inej confronts kaz with the truth of his revenge arc (which essentially drives the plot of the entire duology): how is the person he became to ruin pekka different from pekka himself?
and again, kaz mentions building an empire and burning it.
so it has to have meaning. is it literal? will a big plot point in soc #3 involve kaz setting fire to the barrel? but if that's the case, why is it significant that he rebuilds it into something new beforehand?
or maybe it's figurative. at the very end of ck inej asks kaz to help her end slavery from his side of things in ketterdam. she mentions taking down the crooked politicians, the slave-owners, the... even less-moral barrel bosses. while it seems obvious that kaz's 'new empire' is a barrel under his control, what would become of a criminal empire under the thumb of a man indirectly helping to destroy it? perhaps it figuratively 'burns to the ground'.
so either kaz builds his empire, and then literally burns it to achieve something else, or kaz builds his empire and uses its own power to 'burn it' by helping something cleaner grow instead. maybe that's the connection to the bathroom conversation: maybe it's the way he finally proves himself to be different from pekka.
or maybe it's neither of those, and I'm completely off-base? either way it has to mean something big, and I would honestly love to hear more interpretations.

thinking about what if everytime Inej docked while at sea she sent letters home to Ketterdam and late at night Kaz would reread the letters in chronological order, running his fingers over the lightly crumpled pages and imagining she was there with him. he takes his gloves off to do so, letting himself be vulnerable for once. and with each letter he receives, he writes a reply that never gets sent, starts a little collection of messages that say everything he wishes he said said out loud.

ive seen this a few times and i looooooove to think about a grishaverse au where kaz is the sun summoner bc honestly itd be so fucking funny. like not only do i think kaz would have IMMEDIATELY cottoned on to the darklings bullshit, i think he would have strung that motherfucker along the ENTIRE time. oh u want to play will they wont they with me, 100+ year old creep? play will they wont they WITH MY CANE IN YOUR FUCKING KNEECAPS DICKHEAD also i feel like if nikolai proposed to kaz he wouldve said lay one single hand on me and you die but also make me king. like. he would have been UNSTOPPABLE what the fuck is pekka goddamn rollins gonna do against THE KING OF RAVKA, i dont even ship kaz and nikolai, but i think they could absolutely make a marriage of convenience work while they both date their fckn baddass suli girlfriends they are the same kind of insane and given a common goal they’d totally b bros. tolya and tamar hanging out with jesper and inej? dream come true fr fr. nikolai would be like ftr youre marrying into a practically bankrupt country on the brink of civil war and kaz would say give me 8 months 2 pieces of wire and a silly wardrobe i HAVE A PLAN and tbh nikolai would be like not only am i in, i actually have some batshit crazy ideas of my own. theyd make destroying the fold so lucrative that shit would be bananas (b-a-n-a-n-a-s) also the apparat would be like im rallying a religious cult in your name! and kaz would be like what, only now? ive been doing that for weeks already, you silly bitch
