But Cas might have taken more than just Dean’s heart when the Empty ripped him away. Cas is gone, and so is Dean’s voice. Traumatic mutism: according to Sam and Eileen, Dean had been through a traumatic experience losing Cas and now he was mute. So, Eileen taught Dean sign language, and Sam bought notebooks for Dean to write out his thoughts. But Dean never stopped aching for Cas; praying to him every day and searching for a way to bring Cas home. When Dean finds a way into Empty, it’s a fight like he’s never fought before. Scream, Dean, scream, the Empty taunts. But Dean can’t stop until he’s rescued Cas, kissed his angel breathless, and told Cas the truth about how he feels—voice or no voice.

But he realises... standing there, in the grey hellish landscape, the portal home flickering just beside them with seconds left on the timer, they're already were too late.
Running himself ragged fuelled solely by caffeine, whisky, and that trademark Winchester determination, he will find a way to stop Chuck and to save Cas. However, this isn't the blaze of glory Dean had always envisioned going out in. But, deep down, he would go out swinging to save a loved one. Those bright shining penetrating tear-soaked eyes are the last thing he sees before his vision is marred, the desperate plea of his name dampened by the black ooze filling his eardrums as the essence of the Empty wraps around him and pulls him pulled from existence into the dark.
All because of that simple prayer, the ending Chuck had always planned was rewritten.

Word Count: 126,551
Main Tags/Warnings: zombie apocalypse, bed sharing, hurt and comfort, angel castiel, protective dean, soft dean, endverse, bamf castiel, bottom dean
Summary: Dean’s life had been made of running. He ran from a curse that had desolated his life ever since he was a child — whenever he got hurt, he turned into a goddamn human-torch, killing everyone around him — and he ran from himself and his own self-loathing.
But managing all that at the end of a world full of Croats lurking around every corner was easier said than done.
Until a mysterious man with tousled dark hair paired with blue eyes as clear as the sky during a hot summer’s day stopped him from free falling, literally. In one fell swoop, the stranger had not only saved his life but also calmed the wildfire threatening to burn everything in its wake.
There was something about Castiel that made Dean want to stop running but also hid something darker — something Dean couldn’t quite put his finger on. And between soft, pillowy lips and feather-like fingerprints, Cas could very well shatter Dean’s world and maybe help save the whole world in return.

I just LOVE trying to guess things about Destiel.
Like when Dean gave Cas the mixtape? Or when did they watch Tombstone? When did they watch other movies and how? (Because there was no TV at least until Scoobynatural I think).
Most importantly when Cas discovered he was in love with Dean? Or when Dean discovered he was in love with Cas? How they both handle those feelings? Did they really knew they were in love? And on and on.
I just looooove finding clues and guessing things. It’s not really easy actually, but mostly I choose what I prefer, because why not. For instance, to watch Tombstone, Cas and Dean saw it on Dean's computer in Dean's room and on his bed, because I prefer it that way. And because it's totally likely.
I'm like a FBI agent and my case is Destiel.

“Who does he think he is?!”
Sam sighed as he listened to another one of Dean’s rants. This always happened when the brothers went out for drinks on friday nights. Sam would rant about something going on with a case, not that Dean was listening, and then Dean would rant about annoying parents or something really stupid a student did.
“I mean, I always assumed he was good looking under that stupid coat but I think my heart almost stopped.”
“What? I thought you were mad at this guy?”
“Nooooo,” Dean practically whined. “He’s this stupidly hot uncle that I only ever see like one a month. I don’t even know what he does!”
“So you’ve seen him…” Sam thought for a moment, “Three times?”
“Five… and a-” Dean hiccuped, “a half.”
“How do you see someone a half time?”
“He was in the car when Jack and Belphegor’s mom picked them up, I saw him through the window. He waved at me,” Dean giggled.
“Then ask him out.”
“I- I can’t do that, it would be un-unprofessional.”
“Normally I’d agree, but it’s not like he’s their dad. So it makes it a little better, at least in my opinion.” Dean’s brow furrowed, and he pouted, as he thought over what Sam had said. “Anyways, my office is having a christmas party-”
“It’s November.”
“We get very busy in december. And since Eileen’s back in Ireland, I was wondering if you wanted to come.”
“A law office christmas party? Sounds boring. ‘Sides, who brings their brother to a christmas party.”
“It’s not that boring, I promise. And quite a few people, last year I think the entire Shurley family showed up. But that probably had something-”
“Shurley?” Dean’s eyes lit up.
“Ya?”
“When is it?”
---
Now, as Dean stood in the corner of Sam’s office party, he had to wonder why he thought Cas would be there. Maybe it was because he always wore a suit, or maybe it was because Sam had said the whole Shurley family had shown up. But as the clock ticked away, he hadn’t seen him. Dean was starting to feel stupid.
“If you’re gonna hide in a corner, you can leave,” Sam said, walking over.
The law office was small, both in personal and space. The room was almost packed, and there were only about thirty people. But that could have been because of the desks and table of food and drinks.
“Awww, don’t want your big bro here? You invited me.”
“Ya, to make friends your age,” Sam laughed. “But you’ve been practically moping in the corner all evening.”
Dean looked down at his cup.
“Are the Shurley’s here?”
Sam raised an eyebrow, before pointing out a small group. “That’s Michael, his youngest brother and our newest recruit Samandriel, and their cousin Balthazar. There’s usually more of them, we don’t even invite half of them, they just show up. But one of their brothers is just running late.”
“Does he work here?”
“Nah, he’s an FBI agent.”
FBI agent, maybe that was Cas.
“Sorry we’re late,” A familiar voice came from the doorway, and Dean went on his toes to see who it was. “Jack didn’t want Kelly to leave.”
The office laughed, and Dean felt his heart stutter. Cas.
“Oh, Mr. Winchester!” Kelly said, noticing Dean across the room.
Her and Cas hung up their coats before making their way to Dean.
“Dean, what are you doing here?”
“Uh, my brother. His girlfriend is out of the country so I’m his replacement, what about you two?”
“I’m the secretary here,” Kelly laughed. “And most of Cas’ brothers work here, so I usually invite him as my plus one. That and it’s the least I can do with how much helps me and the boys.” A brief silence fell between them. “I’m gonna go get us drinks.”
With that, she left Dean and Cas alone.
“So, FBI?” Dean asked, taking a sip of his eggnog.
“How did you…”
“Sam. I uh… I might’ve asked about your family.”
“Why?”
“Because I might’ve come here hoping to see you, and I didn’t really think it through.”
“Why would you be hoping to see me?”
Dean looked down at his cup for a second. Before he could speak though, Sam yelled from across the room.
“He thinks you’re cute!”
“Ha!” Kelly laughed from the same direction, “Cas you own me laundry and dinner for a week.”
Both Cas and Dean turned bright red as the office broke out into a fit of laughter. Dean realized it was probably worse for Cas, most of his family was here.
“Hey Cas?” Castiel looked up at him, and Dean could help but admire how cute he looked. “Merry Christmas,” he whispered, before leaning in to kiss him.

If you’re Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, or Jared Padalecki.
STOP.
Read this post.
Dear J2M,
This is an open letter for you three written by a couple of unhappy passionate fans.
We write this to you because we know at least one of you has a secret Stan account and creeps on the destiel hashtag from time to time. Don’t lie. (Ahem. Misha Collins. Looking at you, Sir.)
With the subtle hints and possibility of a revival, us here at BarrenHeart (Bee and Jay) have some thoughts on what we think a reboot/continuation/revival would look like if it was done well.
Note: we don’t speak for the whole fandom(obviously). And we don’t even speak for all of the Cas/destiel fans. This is from our observation of the fandom after 15x18 and the finale, plus our own opinions.
Here are our demands suggestions for the potential revival.
--Castiel--
First things first. Castiel is brought back.
And by that, we mean he is either shown to be rescued from the empty, Jack rescues him from the empty, or by some other means, that man is not left there to suffer for all of eternity.
Castiel is a lead character.
Not a guest star, not “and Misha Collins.” No. Misha Collins gets to be in every d*mn episode. He is an equal lead alongside Dean and Sam. Which leads into the next point.
Castiel gets his own storyline.
It can be connected to Dean in some way, but he needs his own arc, y’all. Don't care what that is, but he IS his own character. So, some form of personal growth or whatever needs to happen. He is a badass and deserves a good storyline. Also…
Give this M-- F-- (mother father) his wings back!
Yes, he died without ever having his wings return to their full power. Like? We know he was nerfed so he wouldn't overpower Sam and Dean. Prove to us that he can be a fully powered badass and still work alongside Sam and Dean. No need to get rid of that.
Human!Cas does not mean pathetic Cas.
There is a divide on whether Castiel should stay an angel. Personally, we like human Cas. However, human Cas was shafted in the series. If you make him human in any way, shape, or form, he’s gonna still have to be a badass. Don’t whimp him!
He can be a good hunter/pretend FBI agent just like Sam and Dean!
So, make him one! Let him do more cases. On his own. With other people. With Sam. With Dean. He can fight without powers, too.
Give him love!
For the love of freaking Jack, let that man know he is loved by people. Not even mentioning anything romantic, he still needs platonic love y’all. Let Sam say it, let Jack say it. Let anyone in his family tell him that he is loved. Not once in this series did Cas hear that anyone loved him. So, fix it!
New style, anyone?
Cas needs other clothes! Please now. The black trenchcoat we never saw in-show? Boss. Cas in a black leather jacket? Coolness. Hunter plaid? Do it.
Confession Resolution
Speaking of love, come to some conclusion please about him and Dean. Give a resolution somehow, somewhere. We personally don’t really care how it’s done, but there needs to be something said here. You cannot just drop a confession there and just leave like it never happened. So, talk about it.
Adding this, I swear, if this is bros only, you WILL lose Cas fans. So, think about what you’re doing.
--Sam--
Sam is important!
Now, personally we have a soft spot for Sam. His character arc in Season 1-5 was great. Demon blood, powerful Sam was amazing. So, don’t sideline Sam. Seriously. We are gonna say in an unpopular way (as if this post isn’t already unpopular to some), but Sam got sidelined real hard in the last few seasons of the show. Now, was that what Jared wanted? Don’t know. But, Sam needs his own storyline too that isn’t just revolved around Dean. Figure it out.
Witch!Sam
Speaking of which, let this man be powerful. Sam is best when he has powers. Sorry but also not. He has been given all of Rowena’s (who is arguably the best witch around) spell books and decides to not really do much with it? No. He’s becoming a BAMF witch. Full-out, no word spells and shit. End point.
Sam in Charge
He’s not just a baby brother. He’s a grown man. Give him room to grow. Allow him to be a leader. Let him lead a group of hunters, witches, a whole team of people! He’s strong on his own, too. He's a big boy. Prove it.
He should fall in love.
Like, get married and all that. It’s a part of his arc, so keep it there. No blurry wife, my god! Personally it should be Eileen. She’s a badass. They also have a lot in common! Holy hell. They make a good team. So, keep that suggestion in mind.
Let him have the hero’s journey.
We want a good ending that shows growth for this character! He saw himself as a freak with powers, so…maybe he can use his powers now in a way that in empowering instead? Let him have an ending that doesn't just return to the beginning. Let him have gone through all of this changed for the better.
Don't be creepy.
Still keep the brotherly bond with Dean, but don’t make it weird, y’all. Don’t. Please.
Sam as a dad.
He can have a kid. But, Dean Jr? Eh. You might want to reconsider some other (Bobby) possibilities.
--Dean--
Now, with Dean, I wanna make this clear.
DO NOT K word THIS MAN.
This man here has dealt with unbelievable trauma, suicidal thoughts and even almost died by suicide in the show (okay, it was for another reason, but still!) He dies way too many times in this show. It’s not new anymore. Perhaps, when the show was newer, death might have been a bittersweet ending. But, now. It’s tarnished. It happened too much and the message of “carry on” got tainted to mean “there is only peace when you die.” That’s not okay.
Resolve his issues!
He has so much pain and trauma. Let him seek help. Let your audience know that it’s okay to process these emotions. Let him heal. He deserves it.
Dean’s internal struggles
This is piggybacking a little off of point two, but Dean has a lot of things he needs to figure out. We feel like his journey is more internal. While processing his trauma, he needs to learn that it's okay to be himself. This could include things about himself that he feels ashamed of or scared to admit. Things he may have repressed or suppressed over time. No more hiding who he is or brushing it off or making jokes. Be your true self, Dean. It's time.
Dean’s still important, of course
That said, Dean should still be integral to the overall narrative of the plot. Of course he's gonna go head to head with the Big Bad of the season/limited series, but he really should focus on what's inside first before he can take this monster down.
The Bro bond
No more dependent/unhealthy bond with Sam. Of course they are family and brothers, and will always be close. That's perfectly fine. However, its important to note that Dean was Sam’s mom/Dad most of his whole life. And, well, that never came to a resolution. Please let Dean resolve this issue. Sam is grown and older now, and even though Dean will always feel protective of him as his Big brother, Dean shouldn't feel like his life only revolves around taking care of Sam. There is more to Dean and his life.
Dean is complex
Also, Dean is not only about cars, burgers, and pie. It's like some of the writers forgot this. There are so many things/interests of Dean’s that are really cool and add to the complexity of his character. Keep those things.
He needs to resolve his issue with Jack.
He never said sorry to the kid. Not once after telling Sam that Jack wasn't family. He needs to tell Jack he is loved.
Speaking of which, Dean needs to tell Cas he loves him.
Okay. Who knows if you will make destiel reciprocal at this point.
Do we think Dean would have reciprocated based on context clues and what we have seen in the show? Yes.
Do we think this love is romantic? Yes.
Do we think you'll actually fully make it canon in a reboot/continuation? Eh.
Regardless, Dean loves Cas, so make it known.
Other demands considerations.
‘The found family’ needs to not be forgotten.
All the friends that were made along the way need to be included. What happened with Garth was great, actually. Do more of that. And by that, we mean include Jody and Donna. What are the girls doing now? Wayward sisters anyone? Bring Kevin back. Don't leave him to roam the earth all along like that. Either make him human again like Eileen or send him to rest in Heaven.
Where’s Eileen?
Hello??? Where? Tell us she made it back.
Claire
No idea if you can get Kathryn Newton back, but it would be cool at least for one episode. Please. Kaia? Resolve her storyline.
Also, Charlie.
Wtf happened? That was not resolved. We love Felicia Day. Charlie’s friendship with Dean is amazing. She deserves a few episodes.
Crowley!
Seriously. What happened to Mark was super disappointing. You gotta bring him back. His death wasn't great. Bring him back and give him his damn line already!
Jack!
I'm not fully on the Baby!Jack train, but he does deserve a normal life. He's three years old technically. He had no normal life whatsoever. He deserves that. So, give him that.
More Rowena please!
That's it. She's awesome.
Have a wedding.
No, really. Someone's gotta get married. Our pick: Sam and Eileen. Charlie is also a good contender for having a wedding with her partner, too. So there. Weddings are happy. We want a happy ending.
I will reiterate. Team free will lives. That's it.
Okay. Now, moving on to the next part of this. The elephant in the room. The thing a lot of us actually want from this, but frankly, we aren't sure if you'll do it.
Explicit Destiel.
If you've read this far J2M, then you're probably wondering when this was going to be addressed. So, here are the stipulations on destiel.
Go big or go home.
Yep. We said it. Make it explicit, full out, no ambiguity.
Honestly, you might be thinking what you could do to make it explicitly canon? Well, since there were tons of people who still think Cas’ love confession was just a platonic exchange between two bros (like wtf? How?), you're gonna have to spell it out for people.
But, some things that we may perceive as romantic, some people may not.
--Like, holding hands could be considered platonic between two men to some people.
--Cheek kissing could also be considered platonic to some people.
Not to say we need Jensen and Misha doing full on *** scenes to prove anything, but something more than a hand hold. Okay? Okay.
What we’re saying is basically, you're gonna have to kiss. On the lips. Yep.
So...I guess you'll have to figure out how you want to do that.
On when to make it canon:
You can decide if it makes sense to make it canon towards the beginning or towards the end. Honestly, there could be an argument for either. If it's made canon earlier, you could prove there can be a relationship alongside the main storyline. If you wait until the end, you'll leave fans wondering if you'll actually do it. But, the kiss being the major event of the finale could be worth it. Whichever you do, remember there are upsides and downsides to both.
Other other considerations:
Just realize who your fanbase is now. We’ve grown and changed. Like Becky, your fans have gone through a huge change in what they want from the show. Is the fandom all on the same page? Nope. Will they ever be? No.
You will not please everyone. That's a given. But, a lot of fans want to see the show wrap up in a better way than what we got. Destiel fans aside, the finale was not great overall. There are plenty of negative finale reviews that have nothing to do with destiel.
On top of that, society is changing. Slowly. The attitudes in regards to lgbtq media is quite different than before. You have the chance to make history. Really. If you make this canon, that will be a part of your legacy. You'll hit the news. I mean, 15x18 wasn't even the finale and it trended #1 that day.
We suggest that if you do decide to make it canon, it’s meaningful and you take the time to do it right.
So, consider your fans. Consider the part of the fandom that trended your show over the election. Consider the fans that trended a fictional wedding on Valentine's Day. Consider Misha/Cas fans who felt slighted. Consider your LGBTQA + fans. Just, think about what the reboot could achieve. What it could mean to a lot of people.
As always, we just want happiness and peace when we are done.
Thanks for reading Misha J2M.
Sincerely,
Bee 🐝 and Jay 🐦

Feels Theory
This is not an academic essay. But I’m trying to figure out how some people I know think the end of Supernatural was fitting and good and nothing to complain about and other people I know are so intensely upset and angry that they can’t sleep.
I’m dubbing it Feels Theory (cause it sounds like Field Theory). And it goes something like this:
For a subset of viewers, the most important thing about an ending is the feelings it evokes in them when they watch it.
The valued feelings are: Sadness, Nostalgia, and Closure.
What they ultimately want is to let go, and this is the formula of feelings that allows for letting go.
I think Sadness may not actually be right. The SPN ending had sadness. But I propose that Happiness or Bittersweetness might also suffice, because what’s really happening there is not the quality of the emotion but the intensity of it. Feeling any of those things intensely is cleansing. You can have a good cry when you’re happy or sad. The point is the catharsis.
So I’d like to amend that to: Intense Emotion, Nostalgia, Closure.
Nostalgia is actually an incredibly powerful emotion. If you look at JJ Abrams’s body of work, you might be tempted to think it’s the ONLY emotion. His movies are incredibly driven to create a sense of nostalgia in viewers as a means for deriving satisfaction, often at the cost of everything else. Nostalgia is wistful, happy, simple, yearning. It feels good.
Moreover, it lowers anxiety and loneliness. And as we become more anxious and lonely as a society, the desire for this feeling only increases. https://thriveworks.com/blog/obsessed-nostalgia-psychologists/
Closure.  This seems self-explanatory, but a sense of closure is real. Resolving your feelings is as real in art as it is in other aspects of life. We want to feel like there’s nothing more to say, no more questions to ask, no further developments that we might miss if we look away. A direct quote from a fan post, “I think the thing I love so much about this finale is that it FEELS finished. I remember years ago Jared was talking about how if the boys lived he’d be like, “Well then what are they doing??” and I feel the same way.”
The 15x20 hits all these points.
Intense Emotion: Dean’s death scene, Sam’s mourning
Nostalgia: Pie, the Impala in heaven, Bobby waiting, Harvelle’s Roadhouse, just Sam and Dean, the monster of the week hunt, vampires, clowns
Closure: Dean died the way he thought he would, Sam had a family the way he thought he would, and they both die and go to heaven
What Feels Theory proposes is that it is not the content that matters. Therefore, if one could swap out different plot points but retain the same emotional beats, such an ending would also qualify as “good.” It would satisfy because the viewer would go through the same set of emotions, even though they are evoked by completely different circumstances.
Suppose the finale instead went something like this:
They are standing on the road in front of Jack, the new god. Dean asks if he’s coming back to the bunker and he says no. Dean looks pained and says there’s something he wants to ask. Jack smiles fondly at him and says that he knows and then looks over Dean’s shoulder. Cas says, “Hello, Dean” and Dean turns to see him, overcome with relief. One of several things could happen, ranging on the confirmation of Destiel desire: anything from a hug and a good to have you back to tearful kissing. Sam gets a text from Eileen and asks Jack if he could… Jack snaps his fingers and Sam appears next to Eileen for a tearful reunion of their own. Jack smiles to himself and disappears.
Time passes.
Dean and Cas build by hand Singer’s Roadhouse. On the day it opens, Sam and Eileen announce they’re going to have twins. They want the rest to be a surprise, but they’re going to name them Charlie and Jo regardless. Sam stops hunting and instead works on reviving the Men and Women of Letters. In the Roadhouse, Dean sets a slice of pie in front of Cas and looks skyward. “You know kid, you can pop by and try some. Your dad’s been practicing.” He gives Cas a fond smile. The phone rings behind him and he turns to a bank of phones labeled CIA, FBI, Animal Control, Park Ranger. He picks up the FBI phone and leans against the bar near Cas, who has set the fork down and watches him seriously. “Hello? Yeah, this is Agent Kripke.” He meets Cas’s gaze. “What can I do you for?”
Such a series of events covers, at least, nostalgia and closure. It brings back names of old characters. It gives Sam a domestic life. It recalls the episode in which Dean ran a bar and was happy. It recalls the Roadhouse itself. It mirrors Bobby being the hub of hunter back-up. It lets Sam focus on intellectual pursuits. And there’s pie.
It covers closure. They have moved on from hunting. They have set up new lives and entered a new era. Jack isn’t going to be throwing new destinies at them. And while it may not be the closure of death, it’s a turning the page on a chapter of their lives.
Intense Emotion could be achieved any number of ways, depending on whether the goal was a full-length episode as a series coda. Perhaps there’s a scene of Dean moving out of the bunker to live someplace closer to the Roadhouse until it’s done. It’s a tearful goodbye while Sam stays behind and Dean takes his few possessions. Or maybe you go the happiness route. In which case, Sam’s babies being born and Dean holding one and smiling and Cas holding one and smiling and them looking at each other a little tearful would also fill that catharsis void. They talk about how they’re going to do things differently than what their dad did.
But the theory is that it’s not the content that ultimately matters if you’re a feels viewer. Anything that evokes nostalgia, closure, and strong cleansing emotion is sufficient for a “good” ending. And you are likely to accept any permutation of events without imagining a different permutation of events as better or correct or proper, because the feels themselves were correct and proper.
Non-feels viewers, on the other hand, focus on narrative plot points. Their satisfaction is derived from what they feel is a logical progression of plot points and character beats. Whether any of those things evoke nostalgia or closure is less important than whether they see them as congruous. A good ending is one that is congruent. Where do their feels come into this?
I don’t know. I’m still thinking about it. These viewers have loads of feels for sure, but the issues they raise as the reasons for their unhappiness are all congruency based. The cries are mostly that it “doesn’t make sense” or “ignores the last 10 years” or “leaves out all the character development” and not so much that it lacked intense emotion or a sense of closure.
Their ability to engage with the emotional content seems contingent upon the congruency requirement. If congruence is broken, that dissonance becomes paramount and takes a place of primacy over whatever the emotional content is trying to evoke.
Whether this is just a way to weasel around shipping lines, I’m not sure. Maybe? I do know that I’ve seen people I would not call casual viewers fall on the feels side. I’m trying to make sense of how long time fans who have watched every episode can seemingly have not watched the same show at all, as their response to the finale are diametrically opposed.
Unfortunately, it’s not something one can really test, either. No show gets to end twice. So you can’t have a feels viewer watch two endings to see if both are good.

elevator confessions
Destiel // 1.6k words // general audiences // mentions of past canon MCD
i was inspired by this adorable fanart by @kamicom because it kinda looks like they’re in an elevator and i just had to write something. i know it’s an older fanart, but i just saw it for the first time ever yesterday and i absolutely adore it and i think we could all use a little love confession and some fluff. so, without further adieu ~
“How did you know Amanda Lay?”
The girl—Emily, Dean remembers—hands him and Cas a couple cups of coffee. It’s early morning and smells like the rain they drove through on the ride here the night before. The windows of her high rise Seattle apartment are all open and a soft breeze rustles a magazine on the coffee table, moves the floor-length curtains. The apartment is stunning in a shabby chic sort of way, full of floral designs and soft throw blankets. It’s not really Dean’s taste, but it’s spotless. Dean wonders if she’s been cleaning through her sadness.
“We went to grad school together.” She takes a seat in the white armchair across from the couch Dean and Cas are sat on. Her face is expressionless but her eyes are swollen. Dean’s seen it plenty of times before; people repress their grief around other people in the aftermath of a death so no one can see them falling apart. Dean’s been there himself more times than he’d like to remember. “We met in the food court between classes and clicked right away. We started living together a year after we met.” She looks from Dean to Cas and back to Dean. “I’m sorry, I didn’t think I had to talk to the cops about this, I wasn’t there.”
“The FBI takes things a little more seriously and we have to run our own investigation,” Dean explains. He takes a sip of his coffee and flips open his notepad. “I know this must be very difficult for you, but we appreciate any information you can give us.”
“The FBI is involved in a . . . bear attack?”
“Killers are very creative nowadays, Ms. Maxwell,” Dean continues quickly when he sees Cas’s mouth open up. He told Cas not to talk too much, since he was never really all that great at undercover work. “We have reason to believe that a person may have done this with their own makeshift claws.”
Dean knew there was no delicate way to put that, but he didn’t have to recite the words like they were out of a script. That’s the downside of having so much experience, sometimes you forget that other people care more than you do.
Emily’s stoic expression holds while she processes Dean’s words, but it breaks down slowly, and then, all all at once, she begins to shake under waves of sobbing. Her hands come up to cover her face as the gasping and wailing fill the otherwise composed apartment. Cas looks at Dean, clearly uncomfortable and unsure of what to do.
“Who would do that?” she shrieks, looking between Dean and Cas with tears streaming down her face, hands in fists on her knees. “To another person? To Amanda? Why would they do that to her? She didn’t do anything wrong!”
Dean opens his mouth to offer some sort of rehearsed condolence, but abandons the idea when she wraps her arms around her middle and bows her head over her lap, the crying continuing. She looks like she’s about to be sick.
Cas leans over and whispers, “Dean, what’s happening?”
It takes everything in him not to roll his eyes. “She just lost her friend, Agent Kossoff. She’s sad.”
“She wasn’t just my friend!” Emily blurts around a hiccup, pulling herself up enough to cast her angry red eyes at them. “I was in love with her! She was the love of my life and I never—” hic “—I never—” hic “—told her!”
Understanding floods through Dean. It hits painfully close to home, but he doesn’t have the time to think about it. He pushes the box of tissues on the table closer to her, hoping that’s what she needs right now. He watches as she takes one to mop up her tears and then another to loudly blow her nose. She’s an absolute wreck. A flash of a memory—knuckles against a back door, carrying a body inside, burning his best friend—knocks a little breath out of him. He pushes it away.
“I was going to tell her on her birthday,” she blubbers quietly, sobs subsiding. “I had this big plan with flowers and wine and some rom-coms. She never really liked parties, so I thought it could just be the two of us, and I could talk to her about it. But at the last minute she said she wanted to go hiking with her sister. I told her to be safe and call me if she had signal, but the next time I saw her was on the news.”
Dean pulls a few pages of his notepad back and finds a name. “Her sister, Kelsey, said that it happened while Amanda was out looking for some water, but Kelsey wasn’t attacked. Was there anyone who would have ever wanted to hurt Amanda?”
Emily shakes her head. “Amanda was the kindest person I’ve ever met. She was a veterinarian, for crying out loud, all she wanted to do was take care of animals and volunteer at the soup kitchen and paint. Everyone loved her.”
Dean nods, scratching a few words on his notepad. He glances at Cas who’s already looking at him, but quickly looks away.
There isn’t much else she could tell them and Dean’s sure that she would rather be alone to cope with her loss than continue to be questioned by strangers, so he stands and Cas follows suit. He hands her a card. “We appreciate your time, Emily. If you think of anything else, please don’t hesitate to call.”
She takes the card with a nod and nothing else. Dean and Cas let themselves out and press the button for the elevator. It’s quiet between them as they wait for the car. Dean worries his lip, thinking about the times he lost Cas and regretted not telling him.
He should tell him. Before it’s really too late. Cas could die tomorrow—hell, he could die today on this case—and he’d never know.
Maybe Amanda knew and she went hiking because she was too afraid to deal with it. Maybe she thought avoiding Emily would make it feel less like breaking her heart. Maybe Cas knows, too. Maybe that’s why he never seems to stick around longer than a week or two at a time.
The elevator doors open for them and they step inside. Cas isn’t looking at Dean, more concerned with wringing his hands together like he’s nervous. Dean’s never seen him do that before; he looks so human doing it.
He should tell him. Cas is human now, so he’s vulnerable. The elevator cords could snap and they could fall 15 floors to their death. Someone could hit them on the drive back to the motel and crush them against the side of a building. Lightning could strike, a 10th story potted plant could fall, a dog could maul one of them and it’d all be over. He should tell him.
Dean Winchester has never been rumored to be a coward, not since he spent decades hunting monsters and staring Death in the face and fighting God himself. But this is different. This is scary—putting it all on the line to risk losing one of the most important people in his life. Still, he should tell him.
It’s just not the right time. Which is a problem, because it’s never the right time. He could have told him when he first started having these feelings, when they were new and confusing, but how could he explain something he didn’t even understand? He could have told him when he was planning on blowing up Amara and himself, but what would be the point in admitting his feelings when he was just about to die? He could have told him when Cas came back from the Empty, all shiny and new and lost, but there was too much else going on to worry about emotions. He could have told him in purgatory, both times, he could have told him in the hushed hours of the night when he knew Cas was watching over him, he could have told him, he should have told him, he should tell him, he—
“Dean?”
Cas’s voice startles him out of his internal argument. Cas is still distressing his hands and his gaze is zeroed in on the floor.
“Hm?” he replies.
Cas doesn’t say anything for a few seconds. He said Dean’s name so quietly he’s starting to wonder if he even said it at all.
“I . . .” Dean hears Cas audibly swallow and take a deep breath. “I love you.”
Dean’s brain short circuits. Cas didn’t really just say he loved him, did he?
“Hmm,” he hums in response. What does one even say to that? Yeah, I love you too and I have for years but I was too much of a pussy to say anything. And maybe also, Did you just have the same internal monologue as me and beat me to the punch? Perhaps with a side of, Was I even going to take that punch or just continue to repress my feelings for another ten years?
None of those things come out. Instead, he does what he does best and Dean Winchesters his way through it. He wraps an arm around Cas’s neck like it’s no big deal and pulls him in close enough to press a long kiss to his cheekbone. Cas is stiff for a moment, then relaxes and worms an arm around Dean’s waist.
“I love you, too,” Dean says against Cas’s skin.
Cas turns to face him and Dean turns at the same time and their mouths find each other without preamble.
When the elevator opens to the lobby, they walk out to the car like that, wrapped around each other, and then they hold hands in Baby, and then they meet up with Sam at the motel with smiles and breakfast sandwiches. Sam doesn’t say anything, but Dean thinks he knows. And that’s enough for now.

Show, Don’t Tell
A Supernatural Fix-It fic.
Pairing: I tried to at least hint at Destiel. Also Sam x Eileen because I can and it’s been fifteen years since Jess died so sue me if I don’t want Sam paired off with a blurry wife.
Word count: 6560
Because one of the most important rules of storytelling is to show, not just tell.
So this is basically 15x20 but with family.
Better late than never, right? Sorry it took me so long to post this. I hope you guys like it :)
Like, reblog and comment if you want. I found this was very therapeutic for me. I hope it gives some comfort to y’all.
Tumblr media
Dean reaches to the nightstand lazily, snoozing his alarm. Like the day before, and the day before that and the day before that, he stares at the ceiling for a moment.
It still feels so surreal.
He’s free.
He’s free. And so is Sammy. And so is everybody. They did it.
His chest still aches when he remembers everything they lost along the way.
With a small shake of his head and a plastered on smile, he sits up. A bark shakes the remaining sleepiness out of his system and he opens his arms in invitation. His smile grows genuine at the feel of Miracle. He balances them a bit, letting out a rough “good morning” at his canine friend.
He’s tasted victory before. In the form of Cas coming back from the Empty back when Jack first came to their lives. He tasted victory briefly every time he kept Sammy safe. He tasted victory in small amounts with friends and family and whenever a hunt was well done.
The victory that came from defeating Chuck was lacking, though.
He pushes that emptiness aside.
Everybody who could, had come back with the snap of Jack’s fingers. And that’s a whole lot better than none of them come back at all.
So he squishes Miracle once more. He can’t change anything anymore and that’s just how it is. At least he’s not alone.
He gets up, puts over his dead guy robe and whistles so Miracle will follow.
The smell of eggs and bacon is nice. The laughter that comes from the kitchen is even better.
Sam and Eileen are standing shoulder to shoulder in front of the stove. Eileen, like Dean, is still in her pajamas while wearing Sam’s robe. Sammy’s wearing a gray shirt and black sweatpants. He’s back from his morning run.
At the sound of Dean walking in, Sam turns around; Eileen follows suit at seeing Sam’s actions and waves hello at Dean.
Breakfast is a happy, relaxed affair. Dean can’t keep himself from smiling proudly at the two nerds across the table. They’d grown inseparable as soon as they’d found each other again.
He has dish duty and of course he smuggles Miracle all the scraps even after serving him his actual breakfast. After that, he gets dressed (totally cleans up his room… not) and hits the library. Miracles sits by his side as Dean pets him and scrolls through the net, jumping between job hunting and searching for actual hunts. He barely notices Sam sitting in front of him when a particular article catches his eye.
“Dean?”
“Huh?”
Sam gives him a questioning look. “Did you find anything?”
Dean looks back at the screen. For a moment, he wants to say no, forget about the article and move on looking for a job. But no, he’s still a hunter. The Big Bad may be gone, but the Winchester brothers’ job isn’t… Also, he may have seen another article from the same town with something interesting, and he could use a distraction.
“Yeah, I think I found something.”
Not even an hour later, they’re saying goodbye to Eileen and Miracle, promising to be back home in a few days time.
=================
Dean is positively giddy by the time they roll into town. He had to convince Sam to do this, arguing how they got time before they would crash the crime scene for clues and eventually, he finally got the okay (not that it would’ve made any difference). He parks Baby right before the pie festival and stares in awe as he gets out of the Impala.
Sam stands right beside him, taking in his reaction. “Are you sure you’re ready for this?”
“This is my destiny,” Dean proclaims, watching all these people walk around eating apple, cherry, coconut, pecan– oh god they have fried pie. Sin or not, distraction achieved. “It’s just so beautiful.”
“Are you crying?”
“No. Yo– You’re crying.”
Sam scoffs, chuckling. “Uh-huh.”
“I’m gonna get some pie.”
“Right,” Sam nods, amused.
It just feels so good to say it. He’s already walking towards the festival with a big smile on his face. “I’m gonna get me some damn pie.”
And with that, Dean tours. He forms in line to the pie truck, ordering one piece of each flavor, then goes around with this big white box asking for a piece of each pie in the festival.
He finds Sam again a few minutes later, sitting by himself on a bench and looking towards a family with longing. Dean doesn’t doubt it: he’s daydreaming about him and Eileen having that someday.
“Found ya,” Dean sits beside him, glaring daggers at a stranger who almost crashed into him and put his pie at risk. “What’s wrong?”
Sam straightens his jacket. “Nothing, I’m fine.”
“No, come on. You got that face–,” he motions with his free hand. “That, that’s Sad Sam Face.”
“I’m not Sad Sam,” he mocks. A couple of seconds go by with Dean still looking at him. Sam sighs. “I’m just– I’m just thinking about Cas, you know? Jack. I wish they could be here.”
Dean feels as if a bucket filled with freezing water had been dumped on him. The ache in his chest comes back with a full force and suddenly he wants to bail and beeline it to the bunker until he can hug Miracle again. For a moment; for a sweet, brief moment, he’d been distracted enough from the loss.
“Yeah,” he clears his throat. “ Yeah, no, I–I think about them too.”
“What happened?” Sam speaks again, carefully. “You said he saved you, yeah, but… what happened?”
“It’s like I told you and the kid, alright?” Dean snaps, then closes his eyes as he relives everything in a hurtful, awfully quick memory. “He summoned the Empty. The Empty got there and took him and Billie and by the time I realized what had happened they were– he was gone. I couldn’t stop him. I couldn’t say goodbye. I couldn’t do anything.”
Sam has the decency to not say anything.
“I told Claire the same thing,” he adds, once he’s calmed down enough. “If we don’t keep living, his sacrifice and Jack’s sacrifice won’t mean anything. Cas saved me, Jack brought everyone back, we saved the world.”
“Yeah, you’re right. I just miss them.”
“Yeah, we all do. I certainly do.”
He’s not in the mood to talk about it anymore. He doesn’t want to remember anymore how he just stood there, paralyzed with fear and shock as Cas sacrificed himself for him for the last time to go to the only place Dean can’t save him from. He’s gone.
So he stabs his damn pie and takes the first bite, pretending the deliciousness of the dessert is enough to distract him when a full piece gets shoved into his face. Dean licks his lips. Coconut pie.
“I’ve wanted to do that for a really long time,” Sam laughs.
Dean gives him a bitter smile. Deep down, he’s thankful for the sudden distraction.
=======================
They introduce themselves to the policewoman as agents Kripke and Singer from the FBI. The dad’s throat was torn and he’d been stabbed. The mother’s tongue had been ripped out and she was the only one left after the attack. The kids were taken.
The policewoman had looked at them curiously. “I didn’t know homeland security took home invasion cases.”
“Oh yeah, we’re full service,” Dean answers with a bitter smile.
As they talk more, Sam asks if the mother had been interrogated already, if she had seen something. The policewoman nods, taking out a piece of paper from the folder in her hands and showing Sam and Dean the drawing of a smiling skeleton.
“She drew this when asked if she saw the attackers,” she explains further.
Dean nods distractively. When the policewoman is called into the house, he turns to Sam.
“I recognize that face.”
“Yeah, me too. Just don’t know from where.”
They sweep around the house looking for clues and thank the people working the case for their time before asking for the coroner’s report. With the files in hand, they leave the scene and go just out of town so they can regroup.
They’re leaning against opposite sides of the hood of Baby. Dean’s going through dad’s journal while Sam goes through the file they were given and extending a map of the state.
“Found it!” Dean announces. “Dad came across these things in ‘86. He was working a string of kidnappings involving seven children along the 77. Mark these up: Akron, Canton, East Sparta,” he listed. “He didn’t find much, but one of the witnesses described this.”
He turned the journal around, showing Sam a more detailed copy of the face their witness had drawn.
“Alright, so Dad knew about this case–”
“Yeah but he didn’t find much. Guess he thought this was some major crime thing, not a monster.”
“So, the victims–”
“Kids were taken; the adults that weren’t drained had their–”
“Their tongues ripped out.”
Dean nodded. “Yeah… You know what this is? Mimes.”
Sam scoffs. “My money’s on vampires.”
Tongue in cheek, Dean nods, giving it a thought before his face lights up at a breakthrough. “Vamp–mimes! Son of a bitch, man.”
Sam knows this Dean. The Dean that gets silly when he’s down, the one that smiles and attempts to make him laugh so he won’t notice. Dean’s distracting himself; and Sam, just this once, is gonna let him. They both lost Castiel, but Dean’s the one who was closer to the angel. At least this time Dean’s not putting his life at risk.
“Okay, so if the pattern holds, then the next town they’re gonna hit is Canton.”
“And they’re gonna target a family that lives outside of town, isolated and with kids between the ages of five and ten,” Dean supplies.
“Alright,” Sam puts the cap back on his sharpie. “So, who in Canton fits that bill?”
===========================
The Maxwell’s from Canton fit the bill.
The brothers camped out near their house until nightfall and stayed hidden. The vampires would arrive soon. They had to. The Maxwell’s were the only ones who ticked off all the requirements of the pattern their dad had collected.
So when a white van pulled up to the main entrance of the house, Sam got his gun ready and Dean pulled his machete out of its case.
Three vampires came out of the van. Two vampires were beheaded not ten minutes later and the third one had been shot in the head with a bullet soaked in dead man’s blood.
They interrogate him, threaten to kill him slowly to get him to confess where’s his nest and if he’s being honest, Dean doesn’t care for a hot minute if the guy talks or not. He gets to decapitate another vamp and whether he’ll do it slowly or quickly doesn’t matter because he will find that fucking nest and he’s gonna bring those kids home so help him Jack.
The fact that he might have been itching for a hunt while at the same time wanting to stay cooped up in the bunker for the rest of his days is irrelevant.
Vamp-mime #3 ends up talking and, like he promised, Dean makes his demise quick. Sam makes an anonymous call to the Canton police department to report the bodies and they’re out of there, Dean drives as fast as he can through the highway and towards the location of the nest.
He guesses that if the three goons don’t make it back to the nest soon they’ll either flee or look for their missing members. Both options involve them leaving the nest, so neither option is good.
His conversation from earlier that day with Sam replays in his memory. Over and over he hears himself saying if we don’t move on, all that sacrifice will have been for nothing. He’s right. He’s right and he should move on. He should leave the past in the past and come to terms with the fact that whatever he wanted to say to Cas won’t ever happen because Cas can’t hear him anymore. He couldn’t say anything and now he’s stuck living in a present that is good but that is incomplete.
Dean’s come to that realization several times in the couple weeks since they defeated Chuck, yet his heart still breaks each and every time. There is so much he wanted to say to Cas and Jack.
‘You are family, Jack,’ is one of the many things he wants to clear up for the kid.
He drives and drives until Sam turns him to take a turn and they stop outside of a seemingly black, old-looking barn.
“You think this is the place?” Sam asks as they get out of Baby.
“Well, old and abandoned place in the middle of nowhere that looks like it came out of a bad horror movie…” Dean nods. “Yeah, I think this is it.”
“Great.”
They go to the trunk and it feels… ominous, somehow. On top of everything going on in his head, he’s now remembering his father and that vamp hunt he took them in ‘05. The hunting world changed for him that time, he had a feeling it was about to change again.
And because he feels like throwing shit at mimes, he takes the throwing stars, giving Sam a cheeky smile. He gets a shake of the head and bitch-face number 10 in response.
“No.”
“We’ve never used them, come on,” Dean pleads. “Just this once.”
“No way.”
“I never get to do anything fun,” he grumbles, scouring through the trunk. “Where’s the rest of the dead man’s blood bullets?”
Sam motions his gun, “we ran out. I have the last few.”
“Seriously?!”
Sam gives him an apologetic look. “I’ll shoot, you take a machete. And we take these sons of bitches down together, alright?”
“Yeah, okay,” Dean grumbles, pointing the machete at his brother. “But you’re in charge of making more when we get back home.”
“Fine.”
They go in. Dean with his machete, Sam with a gun in his hand and a machete in the other.
Suddenly, a milk run hunt is not so easy anymore. There are another four vampire mimes, all ready and waiting for them to make the first strike. Sam makes sure to get the kids out of there, telling them to run as fast and as far as they can, that him and his big brother will follow in a bit to help more.
The fight goes by quick. Sam shoots a vampire, but he loses his gun when another one gets too close and knocks the gun out of his hands. He swings the machete at the attacking vampire and beheads him with a clean cut.
Dean beheads another one, and together they take down a third one.
They exchange a confident look. Almost there.
Suddenly, another two vamps pop out from the back entrance of the barn. The Winchester brothers swing, but a hit at the back of his head leaves Sam unconscious momentarily, rendering Dean outmanned and, soon after, defenseless.
Sam wakes up to Dean pinned down by two vampires, the third one with a raised machete.
He doesn’t have time to think. He reaches out for his previously discarded machete and beheads her.
The action gives Dean enough time to stand his ground once more.
Each brother targets one of the remaining vampires. They’re bruised and battered and Sam’s a little dizzy, but he ain’t gonna let these vamps win.
So he fights, he stands his ground miraculously and eventually gains enough upper hand to behead his vamp. As the head falls to the ground, there’s a grunt and the sickening sound of flesh being torn apart.
What Sam expects to see is a vampire hurt, or even better, beheaded.
What he finds is his brother pinned against a wooden column; the vamp pushing him further against it.
“Dean!” He panics, tackles the vamp to the ground and fights the thing until he can behead it. Which he does with gusto.
Sam finally lets himself breathe as that last head hits the ground. Feels his wounds and the slight pain caused by the vampires but overall, he’s okay. Barely scratched, taking his standards in consideration.
“Sammy,” Dean calls softly.
Sam turns, giving his big brother a tired smile that fades instantly at seeing Dean still pressed against the wooden column, tense, with his face contorted in discomfort and pain.
He’s in front of him in a second. “What’s wrong?”
Dean tilts his head to the side, motioning behind him, “I don– I don’t think I’m going anywhere, Sammy.”
White hot panic begins to course through Sam’s veins as he reaches behind Dean and feels the blood dripping from his back and soaking his clothes. He takes his hand a little bit more up and to the side and suddenly he can feel the protuberance of a rebar sticking out the column… now buried in his brother’s back.
“No no no, we can fix this,” Sam begins to say frantically. “Lemme just get the first aid kit. I’ll take you out of here. We just gotta get you down. It’ll be okay. We’ll patch you up.”
He tries to push Dean away from the rebar, barely moving him but causing Dean to scream in pain and Sam can’t do anything but freeze.
“Fuck! No, Sammy. No nononononono don’t move me. That–,” Dean coughs. “It feels like this thing is holding me together right now.” Sam steps back, hands hanging at his sides and looking heartbreakingly mad at himself for not being able to get Dean out of this. Dean moves his head slightly, forcing Sam to look him in the eye. “I can feel myself fading, Sammy. I–I’m not going anywhere.”
“I’ll get the first aid kit,” Sam insists. “Let me call for help, let me–”
“Sam– Sam!,” Dean cuts him off. “Sta–Stay with me,” he pleads. “Stay with me, please.”
Dean sees his brother struggle for a moment before he nods faintly. “Okay, yeah.”
“Listen to me,” he begins. “You get out of here and you get those boys someplace safe, okay?”
“No,” Sam shakes his head, motioning between them. “We are going to get them someplace safe.”
“No, Sammy. I– There’s no time. Fuck– this thing– you move me and I’ll die, alright? Just,” Dean coughs again. This time, he decides to ignore Sam’s flinch as he tries to focus, to stay just long enough to say it all. “Just stay with me for now, please.”
“Stop! It’s gonna be okay, just–”
“Sammy I ain’t happy with this, but it’s happening. And we can’t stop it, alright?” He gives his little brother a pained smile. “At least I got to save people and hunt things one last time with my brother. Family business.”
“Dean, stop this.”
“No. There’s some things I wanna say, okay?” He pleads. “There’s some things you need to know.”
A white hot flash of pain courses through him and Dean groans, closing his eyes for a moment. He hears Sam sniffle.
“First,” he opens his eyes and flashes a cocky, loving smile. “We had one hell of a ride, man.”
“I will find a way,” Sam stutters, eyes frantic. “I’ll find a way. You’ll come back.”
“No no no no, no bringing me back, Sammy. That always ends bad and we’ve had enough of Big Bads, ya hear me?” Dean coughs. “No bringing me back. Promise me. Swear it.”
Sam opens his mouth to do just that just to placate his brother, but stops. There’s nothing grand, nothing good, nothing positive about this situation. It sucks. It utterly sucks because Dean is right here and he can’t help, he can’t take him off that rebar he can’t cure him he can’t call Cas–
“I’m so proud of you, Sammy,” Dean continues, promises ignored for now. “Come here,” he keeps coughing. “Remember when I came to get you from Stanford?”
Sam nods, stepping closer to Dean, who places a hand on his shoulder while mumbling ‘let me look at you’.
“I thought you were gonna tell me to get lost o–or–or get dead and– anyways. You– you turned out great, Sammy. I’m so proud of you.”
Dean’s difficulty to speak increases with every passing second and Sam grows frantic at the sheer reality of this. He’s watching his brother die and this time– with Jack saying he wouldn’t be a hands on God, with Cas gone, with the promise he hasn’t made yet…
He won’t be able to bring Dean back.
Sam’s eyes fill with tears and suddenly it feels like he’s forgetting how to breathe. He can feel himself shaking, frantically shaking his head as the first tears begin to fall.
“I can’t do this alone,” he pleads again.
Dean sounds so confident in his response. “Yes, you can.”
“Yeah, well I don’t want to.”
“You won’t have to,” Dean assures. “You have– You have D–D–Donna a-a-and Claire. Kaia. J-Jody. B-B-Bobby. Eileen. Garth. Our friends. Family. You’re not alone, Sam. I swear.” His voice grows softer the more he speaks. “I’ll be right here,” he pats Sam’s chest. “E-Every step of the way. I promise. We are not- not alone, Sam– Sammy. Not anymore. Not for a while now.”
Sam is biting his lip hard now, trying to breathe normally, trying with all his might to contain his sobs, to keep the tears at bay. Nothing works. The tears still roll down his cheeks. His breath is still raggedy and broken. His body can’t stop shaking and it only gets worse as he sees Dean begin to cry too.
“Tell me– Tell me you’re gonna be okay,” The oldest Winchester begs. “Tell me it’s gonna be okay, Sammy.”
The words pierce right through Sam’s soul. He doesn’t think he’s ever done anything quite as hard as looking at his dying brother in the eyes and forcing himself to speak in the most reassuring way possible.
“It’s gonna be okay, Dean,” his voice cracks and shakes and his face is fucking soaked but he pulls through. “I’m gonna be okay. It’s okay.”
Dean smiles. It’s a pained, wobbly and grateful smile. “I don’t wanna go, Sammy,” he confesses in a desperate whisper as another tear rolls down his face. “I don’t– tell them I said goodbye. That– that I– fuck.”
“It’s okay, Dean,” Sam repeats, more for himself than for his brother this time. Dean’s grip on his shoulder is wavering and so Sam decides to step in closer, hugs Dean as carefully as possible without moving him. “They know. It’s okay. You can go.”
Dean gives a shaky sigh and suddenly his face is resting against Sam’s shoulder.
“Bye, Sammy,” he whispers.
This time, Dean sighs calmly, slowly, as his hand falls from Sam’s shoulder and his body sags between his brother and the column.
He’s dead.
Whatever self control Sam had left is shattered as he shakily hugs Dean closer to him, burying his face against his now dead brother’s shoulder and sobbing uncontrollably, calling out to him, begging for any kind of miracle to appear and make Dean breathe again.
Nothing changes.
Not after thirty seconds. Not after a minute. Not after five minutes.
Still crying and with shaking fingers, Sam pulls his phone out and texts Eileen, sending her their location and asking her to please come help.
After another couple minutes, Sam takes Dean off the rebar and cries harder at the sound of his flesh tearing a little bit more against the metal as he’s freed from it..
It’s with a heavy heart that he realizes he can’t stay here. There are two boys hidden outside that need him.
He lays Dean down and promises to come back as soon as possible.
=============================
By the time Eileen arrives at the barn, Sam’s taken the boys home.
She finds him inside the old barn, sitting besides Dean’s body, crying, sobbing, shaking. It doesn’t take her long to put the pieces together and for her eyes to fill with tears. She slowly makes her way up to Sam, who startles at the feel of her hand on his back. He stops crying for a second, thinking they might be in danger again, but only cries harder at the sight of Eileen and drags her into his arms, hugging her as tight as he can, desperate for comfort.
“It’s okay, Sam,” she tries to assure him a couple times. It doesn’t work. And it doesn’t feel right to say something like that when her sort of brother-in-law is lying dead beside them. The more she’s there, the heavier the loss feels and soon enough she’s crying just as hard as Sam, aching in pain for the loss of Dean, but more so because of the pain Sam is feeling. Her assurances quickly morph into her trying to say ‘I’m here, Sam’.
Because that she is certain of. She’s not leaving Sam. She’s right here for him.
They get rid of the vamps’ bodies together, neither wanting to be alone for the time being. Once that’s done, they put Dean in the backseat of Baby and they drive home.
==========================
It takes less than a day for everybody to come for the funeral.
Sam and Eileen spend the rest of the night making phone calls to all of their friends and family. Jody, Donna and the girls are the first ones to show up. Claire is clinging to Kaia’s hand tightly as she tries to keep her sobbing under control.
Every time someone shows up, Sam can’t help but think back at something Dean said that time he was supposed to blow up Amara with the soul bomb.
‘I want a big funeral, you hear? I’m talking open bar, all you can eat kinda thing.’
By the time the sun begins to set, everyone is there. Sam finds himself thinking that Dean was right: he’s not alone, they do have a family. And their family is mourning his loss, their loss, with him, together.
Garth brought his family. Bobby and the hunters from Apocalypse World came. Charlie and Stevie came. Someone got a hold of Jesse and Cesar Cuevas and apparently they got on the first plane they could find all the way from Mexico. Even Rowena is summoned, and people are even more surprised when she shows up. Dean’s pyre is surrounded by everybody that ever loved him, everyone they considered family that still lives.
Miracle and Eileen are by Sam’s side when the pyre begins to burn.
They watch as the body of Dean Winchester burns, but they hold on tight to the fact that they’re not alone.
Ironically, the bunker is bursting with life after the funeral.
Everyone was invited to stay the night and said night is drunk away with stories, tears and memories of Dean. The mourn of his loss becomes a celebration of his life.
A couple of days later, after everyone is gone, Sam roams the bunker’s hallways. Eileen does everything she can, but it’s painfully obvious that staying here is not doing Sam any good. Too many memories, too many years, too many reminders of what’s gone.
They sit down, they talk, they cry in Dean’s room… and they come to the conclusion that it’s time.
They arrange things with Bobby and his hunters, giving them the bunker’s keys. They pack up everything they can take and with Miracle following right behind, they say goodbye to their home.
It hurts Sam more than he thought it would, but the bunker’s not being abandoned, it’s being opened for the hunter community to continue to fight the good fight. Except this time, he won’t be in the front lines.
They take Baby with them. Sam is driving, Eileen is sitting shotgun and Miracle is laying in the backseat. He takes Eileen’s hand in his. She signs ‘I love you’, Sam says it back.
“It’s gonna be okay,” Eileen says.
“I know,” Sam answers.
This time, he believes it.
============================
Dean wakes up (and this is a weird thing to say) standing. The sun is shining warm and beautiful on his face and he’s surrounded by a gorgeous mountain view.
There’s no immediate pain and after a full minute, nobody has come out to mock him and tear the fantasy down, so he assumes he’s not in hell.
Thank– No. Not Chuck. Thank Jack, he guesses.
There’s a building to his right and so he walks, curious. When he reaches the front, he’s surprised at the sight of Bobby, their Bobby, sitting on its porch, drinking a beer and smiling warmly at him.
“What memory is this?” He asks, taken aback. He looks up the building and his breath hitches. Harvelle’s. They’re at Harvelle’s.
Bobby chuckles, “it ain’t, ya idjit.”
“Yeah, it is,” he insists. “Last time I heard, you,” Dean points at Bobby. “were in heaven’s lock-up.”
“Was,” Bobby agrees, getting up. “Not anymore.”
“What happened?”
“That kid of yours happened,” he smiles. “He came in and– he fixed it. Everything. Heaven ain’t just your memories anymore. He– He tore down the walls,” Bobby explains softly, excitedly. “Everyone can go see everyone. See, a few miles from here,” he points over a mountain, “is Rufus’ cabin. He got it with Aretha. Your folks have their own place too, nearby.”
“So everyone–”
“You can see them, visit them,” Bobby clarifies. He opens his arms in invitation. “It’s good to see you, son.”
For the first time since he got here, Dean breaks into a big smile and steps into Bobby’s hug, holding on tightly. “Same goes to you, old man.”
“Shut up,” he jokingly scolds. Bobby pulls away from the hug and motions to the roadhouse’s entrance. “Come on in. There’s some people who’d like to see you.”
They step into the bar and Dean is once again taken aback not only because of the view, but because of all the joyful screaming that fills the air as soon as the door opens.
Everybody’s here.
Charlie, Ash, Jo, Ellen, even his mom… Dean’s smile widens even more at the sight of Kevin, who’s apparently not a condemned soul roaming the Earth anymore. Old friends, recent friends and family him and Sam lost along the way… even Frank is here.
Something is still missing tho, but Dean reminds himself bitterly that there’s nothing he can do about Cas, so he leaves it alone and basks in the sight of his friends.
He hugs everybody. He screams in joy and cries in joy and he’s just so damn happy at the sight of everybody.
“Jack did all this?!” Dean asks, once he’s gotten his happy tears under control.
“Not on his own,” Ellen answers. “Castiel helped.”
The world freezes for Dean.
“Cas… Cas is dead, Ellen,” the words feel awful to say, but they’re true. He saw it happen. “He- He’s gone.”
“No, idjit,” Bobby intervenes. “Cas helped Jack do this. This,” he motions around them. “Is the heaven we needed. Dean, it’s the heaven you deserve. And they did it.”
“What ‘bout Sam?” he asks, suddenly scared. “When he gets here, he’ll have this, right? He’ll see all of you?”
“He will,” Charlie speaks this time. “This is heaven now. Time works… differently, here. Sam won’t take long. So, what are you gonna do now, Dean?”
Dean nods, because what else can he do?
Cas is alive.
Cas probably knows he’s here.
“I gotta go,” he says. “I have an angel to talk to.”
He walks back to the roadhouse’s entrance, but stops before opening the door. Dean takes one more look at everyone, smiling. “I’ll be back, I promise.”
“Go find your angel, Romeo,” Charlie whoos loudly.
“Shut up, Charlie,” he calls back, stepping out of Harvelle’s.
As if heaven couldn’t be more perfect, Baby’s parked outside. Dean’s smile grows even more at the sight of her.
He gets inside, turns the keys and closes his eyes, savoring the sound of Baby’s roar. He turns the radio on and Carry On My Wayward Son begins to play.
He doesn’t know where exactly he’s driving, but he knows who he’s looking for. Assumes that heaven will guide him to Cas somehow.
Dean doesn’t know how time in heaven works, but he’s certain he lost track of it. After a while of driving, he stops at the side of the road upon looking at Miracle barking like crazy at the Impala, his tail wagging a mile an hour.
He continues to drive with Miracle riding shotgun until he arrives at his destination.
Castiel looks tense, nervous, but he’s still smiling as Dean gets out of Baby.
“Hello, Dean.”
Dean can’t find words enough to express how much he’s missed him.
“You stupid, dumb son of a bitch,” he croaks, then brings Cas in for what must be the biggest hug of his existence. “You were gone too damn long.”
The ache, the pain, that emptiness he’d been feeling ever since Cas had been taken by the empty, disappears.
He doesn’t let Cas go.
=============================
Sam’s life is good.
Him and Eileen never get married. Not legally, at least. They’re it for each other, they know it, but Sam is legally dead and still wanted in some states, so they can’t get married in a traditional way.
Instead, they have a ceremony with their friends and family. Sam’s favorite picture from that day rests over the chimney, where he’s kissing Eileen’s cheek.
They name their first child Dean. Sam had been nervous to suggest it, but Eileen had taken one look after giving birth to their son and simply said, “hi, Dean”. Sam cried like a baby, murmuring sweet nothings into her hair while pressing his hand (that was signing ‘I love you’) to Eileen’s chest. He swore he’d be a better job than John ever did in raising his kids. He keeps that promise.
Dean grows, so does their family, so does the family business.
Their home is filled with pictures of their friends and family. Some of Sam with Jody and the girls, eating out or hanging out. Some were given to him, showing his brother Dean smiling and being and living with their family.
Dean Jr and his siblings hear endless stories of their super cool uncle from everybody their whole lives. They all wish they could meet Uncle Dean.
Time goes by, life goes on. Sam never gets used to the giant hole his brother’s absence leaves in his soul.
Him and Eileen grow old together. Of course they teach their kids sign language. The hunting world is somewhat still part of their lives. They used to take on small, very few cases, but little by little they just don’t anymore and one day Sam looks around as he’s doing some research to help a huntress in Minnesota and holy crap, he did get out after all.
Sometimes he visits Baby, even goes for a drive with his kids if he’s in the mood. But mostly he just sits and remembers a life besides his best friend, his brother. He prays he’s okay. He hopes he can hear him. He hopes Dean is proud.
Decades go by, his children grow and he loses a part of himself when Eileen dies. His condition gets worse and with time, he finds he can’t climb the stairs and one day he wakes up and he’s in a hospital bed in his living room. It’s insane.
He’s old now.
More time goes by and one day, it just happens. He feels it coming and damn, he got lucky his son Dean had come visit because he did not want to be alone for this.
He holds his son’s hand, tries to be reassuring and wonders if this is what Dean felt like all those years before at the barn.
“We’ll be okay, dad,” his kid tells him. “It’s okay.”
Sam smiles at the feel of his boy’s hand in the shape of the ‘I love you’ sign being pressed to his chest. He makes his own hand move to cover his boy’s.
Suddenly his grip fades, his smile fades, his eyes close. He draws his last breath.
Sam follows his reaper to whatever destination comes next.
===========================
Dean loves having Cas riding shotgun as they drive through heaven. Miracle is sitting in the backseat for most of the drive, sometimes trying to jump over to the front, much to Cas’ amusement and Dean’s panic.
They talked. They keep talking along the road but for the most part, unfinished business aside, Dean is pretty fucking happy. He got Cas back. He knows now Jack is perfectly fine. Cas even told him Jack sometimes drops by to visit. He can’t wait.
They drive and drive and drive and Dean won’t ever get tired of seeing Cas so happy.
They arrive at a bridge. Dean decides this is a good place to stop. He motions for Cas to follow, gets out and opens the backdoor for Miracle to jump out too.
“I just felt like taking in the view,” he explains.
Cas only nods and follows him to the edge. Dean wouldn’t be able to tell how long they stood there, leaning against the metal, taking in the view of the mountains and the river running below them.
Suddenly, there’s a change in the air.
Dean’s face breaks into a huge smile.
Heaven was perfect, but it just got even better.
He doesn’t need to turn around to know who it is.
“Heya, Sammy,” he croaks.
Now he turns, and yeah, his little brother is right there, all teary eyed and happy. Looking like not a day had gone by since the last time they saw each other.
“Dean,” Sam greets softly.
Dean gives a quick look to Cas, who is standing behind and petting Miracle as he smiles at their reunion. Dean looks back at his brother and he can’t contain himself anymore.
He hugs the crap out of Sammy.
Team Free Will is finally back together.
They get back into Baby after admiring the view for a little more and Dean tells Sam everything there is to know about heaven with Cas’ help.
They make plans to take him to Eileen, to visit everyone. To make their lives up here in heaven.
Dean has the biggest smile on his face as he looks in the rearview mirror and sees Cas smiling at him just as big in the backseat with Miracle. Sammy’s in his usual place: shotgun.
Heaven was perfect before, Dean thinks. But it’s finally complete now.

@magic-ramen, I managed to dredge up the beginnings of that constantine!destiel!au.  I PRESENT IT TO YOU NOW.  :D
Tumblr media
Castiel wasn't quite clear on what he was doing any longer.  Since meeting Desmond, he'd been wandering in a haze, following along after the man like an obedient dog.  All that felt real was the man's voice, all silken softness.  It curled inside him, pulling him one way and then another.  Back at his home, he sighed, fingers nerveless as Desmond licked his neck.  It felt . . . odd.  Not sensual.  Not erotic.  Dark and foul.  He tried to rouse but the heaviness only doubled, his vision wavering.  Had he really drunk that much?
He tried to recall but the night’s events were a blank. He didn’t even remember how he’d met Desmond.  Or where. All he knew was Desmond.
"What's this?" Desmond asked, tapping the notepad opened on Castiel's desk.
Head moving like an automaton, it took Castiel a moment to ponder what he asked.  His dream journal.  A silly idea he'd kept with since high school.  "Dream," he murmured.  He wanted more of Desmond's touch.  Not the questions.  Right?  That didn't sound correct but he couldn't parse why.
"Dreams?"  Desmond licked his neck again, dragging sharp teeth along hot skin.  Something wet dribbled down Castiel’s neck.  "What dreams, little Castiel?"
Castiel's fingers fell from Desmond and he sagged, feeling an arm cold as iron around his back.  "A man," he rasped.  "And light.  It calls to me."
Why couldn't he see any longer?  His den was well lit, wasn't it?  Why did nothing but shadow come back?  "I . . . it calls me.  He calls me."
Desmond's fingers pierced his arm, hot like pokers.  He might have screamed, if his mouth worked.  Maybe he did scream.
"Who is he?" Desmond demanded.  His voice no longer warmed Castiel with passion.  It stung like ice, harsh and vile.
"Dunno," he admitted, slurring.  The only consistency had been the man’s appearance.  Tall, brown hair, green eyes.  A shroud of nightmares around him even while he shone like the sun.  And then the light of blue that reached for him.  Cut through the man and tugged at Castiel.  The dreams had begun to plague him following his thirtieth birthday two months prior.  Hadn't stopped since.  Could almost hear the voice during the day.
A hiss of sound.  A laugh?  "Oh, pretty thing.  You tried so hard this time, didn't you?"  Desmond's tongue burned as it scraped down Castiel's cheek.  "Don't worry, little bird.  I'll make sure you can't feel it when I rip your intestines out."
Desmond’s hand drove into Castiel’s stomach, tearing skin. Castiel grunted, even as blood fell in runnels down his groin and thighs.  Desmond’s hand clenched inside him and only then did he cry out, though it erupted broken and weak.
“At least this time they sent a pretty weapon.”
Castiel sank into shadow, his body leaden, head swollen with darkness.  His head cracked against his desk.  He knew he should fight.  Wanted to fight.  But the will to do so bled out of him like oil, heavy and slick.  And like the clarion call of a hawk, green shattered the shadows.
His body shook in echo of the violent noise that erupted.  Screaming.  Someone screaming, though it gurgled and bubbled.  Something warm and wet spilled down his cheek and he groaned, struggling out from the poisonous weight that pulled at him.  Vision tilted, he saw Desmond; or, rather, what was left of him.
The lower half of Desmond's face hung crazily, teeth shattered and bone split.  But Desmond, rather than fall, only narrowed vile red eyes.  Though his jaw was nearly gone, Desmond's voice boomed in the bright room.
"You dare?!"
"Yeah, I have that problem sometimes," came a new voice.  The sound of a gun's hammer drawn back.  "You look a little uneven.  Think I should fix that?"  Another blast, shivering through Castiel's very bones.  To his bleary horror, Desmond's ruined jaw lay on Castiel's chest and had he the ability, he would have retched violently.  Instead, he groaned and rolled, falling from the desk Desmond had pinned him to.  Sprawled on the wood floor of his den, he squinted, trying to see the newcomer.
The familiarity cut through his stupor.  Tall.  Brown hair.  Green eyes.  It couldn't be.  Could it?  "It's . . . you," he rasped, his voice little more than a whisper.  Green eyes swung to him, brighter than the lights above.
"Juliet," he called, wariness leaving it sharp, "guard."
A shadow darker than night shifted into Castiel's line of sight.  It reeked of sulfur and stone.  Heat poured off like the burn of smoldering coals.  Twin red eyes, shining like hellfire.  Castiel reached up, touching shadow, feeling a tongue that burned like acid.  He tried to see the man who'd saved him.  To thank him.  But the shadows had returned, softer this time as they crowded around him.
Castiel swallowed, trying to call out, even as he heard Desmond scream in rage.  The sound of a violent struggle.  All too soon, though, Castiel could hear nothing but a thunderous heartbeat out of the darkness.
~~*~~
When Castiel woke, his gut burned.  He gasped, eyes snapping open only to shut immediately.  Bright, sterile lights.  Glaring walls.  Not his den.  Not his home.
"Mr. Novak?"
An unfamiliar but kind voice.  Castiel tried again, squinting at the speaker.  Tall, brown hair.  Dressed in a suit and overcoat.  The man held out a dark wallet with a badge and shield.  Not the green-eyed man.  He didn’t recognize this one.
"Mr. Novak, I'm Agent Sam Winchester."  He retrieved his badge and tucked it into his overcoat.  Pointing to another man, this one slim and blond, he continued.  "This is my partner, Agent Balthazar Elgin."
Castiel frowned and rasped, "Police?"
Agent Winchester smiled sourly.  "FBI, actually.  Your coworker, Anna, called your attack in.  She apparently stopped by your home this morning when you didn't come to work."
Licking his lips, Castiel continued to furrow his brow.  "Why . . . is the FBI interested . . . in what happened to me?"
Agent Winchester took a deep breath.  "The man who attacked you?  Desmond Reynolds?  He's a wanted serial killer.  You're the first to survive."  He pulled out a small notepad.  "Can you tell me what you remember?"
Shadows.  Fire.  Dreams.  He lifted a hand, dismayed to see an IV rammed into the too-pale skin.  He vaguely remembered being stabbed.  Shot?  He shuddered.  No, this Desmond, had thrust his hand into Castiel's stomach.  His fingers crawled across the clean white sheets.  He could feel thick padding beneath it. How had he survived?
"Mr. Novak?  Desmond was long gone by the time we got there.  He apparently believed you dead."  He cleared his throat.  "Actually, we're lucky Anna found you when she did."
No, that wasn't right.  Someone had been there.  Someone had saved him.  He mumbled as much to the agent.
The man smiled patiently.  "We only found evidence of you and Desmond; and, well, Anna.  No one else was in the home."  He glanced past his partner to the uniformed office that stood in the doorway.  "We have witnesses that saw Desmond intercept your glass at the bar.  We think he drugged you in order to make you his next victim."
It hadn't been that.  Desmond had simply touched him and he'd slipped into a sickly fog.  While in the throes of it he couldn’t recall what had happened, but now, away from the man, he recounted everything.  He’d stopped at a bar for dinner.  Had only stepped inside when Desmond came up to him and touched his hand.  After that, it was as though he watched all that happened from hundreds of miles away.  He could recall with eerie detachment how Desmond had gored him.  He'd fallen against his desk, legs gone.  Blood warm and slick around him.
Castiel opened his mouth to say as much but stopped at the sharp look of warning in the agent's eyes.  He swallowed and shook his head.  "I'm sorry," he husked.  "I can't really remember much."
"Well, I'd say it's a simple case of our lad getting sloppy," Agent Elgin commented.  He smiled at Castiel.  "Lucky for you, you took quite a wound but, not that deep.”  He folded his arms.  “All the same, we do ask you stay in touch, hm?”
Castiel nodded, confused.  “But . . . it wasn’t a knife.”
Balthazar’s eyes sharpened, as though in caution.  “Not a tiny one, no.  Rather large, by my judge.”
What?  Castiel didn’t protest, however, given the expression on the agent’s face.  “Oh,” he replied, sagging in his bed.
“Dramatic git, I’ll give him that.”  He patted Agent Winchester on the shoulder.  "I'll speak with our darling locals, Sam."  With a flip of the fingers, he slid out the door, taking the officer with him.
As soon as the door clicked shut, Agent Winchester tucked his notepad away and shoved his too-long hair off his forehead.  He looked at Castiel gravely.  “What did he use?”
Castiel shivered, still seeing his own insides in the man’s hands.  “His . . . hand.”
Sam winced.  “Shit. I was afraid of that.”
“How?”
The agent pursed his lips before walking to the door and checking that it remained secure. He ignored Castiels question and asked one of his own.  “You saw him, didn't you?"
"Who?"  Startled by the sudden change, he clenched his fingers atop the blanket.
"Dean.  My brother."
"Your . . ?"
The agent took a seat at Castiel's bedside and rubbed his face.  "Brother," he mumbled.  "Dean.  Tall, like me.  Brown hair.  Green eyes?"  He snorted.  "Smartass loudmouth?"
That definitely rang familiar.  The eyes stuck out for him the most.  He nodded.  Lifting a hand, he waved it around his chin.  "Desmond's jaw . . . was . . . it was gone."
"But he still spoke, didn't he?"
Shivering, Castiel nodded.  "What was he?"
"I don't know what they're called; Dean calls them every name in the book but what they actually are.”  He sighed.  “Balthazar and I were sure Desmond would be one of them; I’m just sorry you had to witness it, too.”
Castiel’s brow furrowed.  “I don’t understand.”
Sam jerked a thumb to the closed door.  “It’s Dean who usually gives us a head’s up on these things; even though he stays away for the most part."  He leaned back, his fingers laced over his stomach.  "He’ll leave a clue of some kind, though, when it's not a normal crime."
That didn’t answer anything.  Why did this agent appear to know what Desmond was?  Why did both of them?  And just what was Dean and the shadow that followed him? "What did he want with me?"
"You'd have to ask Dean that," Agent Winchester squinted at Castiel.  "Come to think of it, I'm surprised he hasn't shown his face yet.  He's kind of arrogant.  He'd want you to know he saved your ass."  The agent said it with warm amusement, however.
But, Castiel should have been dead.  What had this Dean done to save him?  He remembered, vaguely, dark smoke and brilliant red eyes.  A heavy weight that surrounded him.  The name Juliet.  He rubbed his forehead, trembling again.  "It wasn't human, was it?"
Agent Winchester's humor faded.  He shook his head.  "Maybe at one point?"  He winced.  "Like I said, Dean knows more.  Bal and I do what we can on this end but, he’s not always up front on what these things are.  The most I get is some odd message now and again so that I know he's still kicking."
"Is your brother human?"
Agent Winchester's open countenance immediately closed.  "I think that's enough for today.  I'll check in with you again tomorrow, Mr. Novak."  The man stood and waved a hand.  "We'll have a guard stationed until you're released.  In the meantime, rest."
Castiel watched him go, all the more unsettled.

Bed Sharing
I created this list probably about a month or so ago, and I remember being so hopeful for the finale. I never dreamt we would get semi-canon Destiel, but I also never imagined the finale would be that disappointing. I will be posting a list of 15x20 fics, but for now, take this fluff and ignore your problems for a while.
Lock and Key by tricia_16 on AO3. (144,500 words).
Tags: Alternate Universe - Soulmates, Bookstore Owner Castiel, Musician Dean Winchester, Friends to Lovers, Keeping Secrets, Mutual Pining, Flirting, Sexual Tension, Slow Burn, Smut, Virgin Castiel, Angry Sex, Dubious Content, Recreational Drug Use, Fluff, Dating, Song Lyrics, Sharing a Bed, Happy Ending.
My Rating: 5 stars.
Description: In a world where people get songs stuck in their heads whenever their soulmate is singing out loud, Castiel discovers that being soulmates with an aspiring singer/songwriter can be taxing, to say the least. Finding said soulmate, learning that he's the most attractive human being on the face of the earth, and then not being able to tell him he’s meant for you? It turns out that's even worse. Not having a soulmate is just the icing on the cake on an already crappy life, if you ask Dean. He wants to sell his songs, but he's terrified of singing them himself. He wants to be a mechanic, but he's stuck selling parts, instead. He wants to kiss the ever loving fuck out of Sam's girlfriend's boss, too, but the guy's holding out for his soulmate, which of course means Dean doesn't even have a shot....right?
Notes: The pure terror that struck me at the end of chapter one nearly made me dip out of this, but I stuck through it, and was 100% rewarded with the ending (I screamed. I think everyone is worried about me now).
Stand By Me by whelvenwings on AO3. (31,252 words).
Tags: Alternate Universe - Zombie Apocalypse, Post-Apocalypse, Enemies to Friends to Lovers, Mutual Pining, Slow Burn, Hurt/Comfort, Sharing a Bed, Slow Dancing, Smut, First Kiss, Canon-Typical Violence, Touch-Starved Dean, Love Confessions.
My Rating: 5 stars.
Description: Dean Winchester has been alone for a long, long time. When he and Castiel happen to find each other - a couple of survivors in a world that’s been all but wiped clean - Dean’s looking for his brother; Castiel is looking for something to look for. They stick together, because neither of them much wants to be alone. They hate each other at first, of course. Dean hates Castiel for being weird and quiet and ironic and antagonistic and proud. Castiel hates Dean for being blunt and reckless and coarse, for drinking, for refusing to talk about how he feels and just pretending everything is fine. Most of all, they hate themselves and each other just for being alive. What right do they have to be alive? No one else seems to be. But against his own will, Dean starts to notice things about Castiel that he likes. Starts to hope that Castiel might like him, too. And together, they start to fight for a world where they're both alive - and that's a good thing.
Notes: I know I have recced this multiple times before but it is one of my all time favourite fics so I won’t apologise! It is so cute, and it has everything you could ask for in a fic.
Partnered by K_K_TiBal on AO3. (28,112 words).
Tags: Minor Donna/Jody, Minor Eileen/Sam, Detective Dean Winchester, Lieutenant Castiel, Undercover as Married, Suburbia, Drug Use, Sharing a Bed, Pining, Fake/Pretend Relationship, Fake Marriage, Falling in Love, Love Confessions, Enemies to Friends to Lovers, First Kiss, Demisexual Castiel, Demiromantic Dean Winchester.
My Rating: 5 stars.
Description: Dean didn't think that his life as a detective could get much worse after Castiel was promoted to lieutenant. Castiel was a stickler for the rules, had no sense of humour, and never seemed to give Dean a break, even though they used to be partners. But then, despite all of their questionable history, the two are asked to go undercover on a case in the wealthy suburbs of California. . . as a married couple.
Notes: I am screaming, that was so f*cking cute! And the artwork was gorgeous, too. Also, now I ship Jody and Donna. Cas gave off such Holt vibes in this, I was convinced I accidentally started reading a Brooklyn Nine-Nine fic (do those exist?)

Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Angst with a Happy Ending, Fake Marriage, Human Castiel, Protective Dean Winchester, Touch-Starved Castiel, Mutual Pining, Jealous Dean Winchester, Slow Burn, Depressed Castiel, Fake/ Pretend Relationship, Sharing a Bed.
My Rating: 5 stars.
Description: 16 months ago, Cas became human. 12 months ago, Cas left the bunker and a broken-hearted Dean behind. Now they must work a case together, where married couples are dying mysterious deaths and the only way to earn the neighbors' trust is by pretending to be married. Slowly, Dean finds that he loves being in a relationship with Cas, fake or not, and Cas finds his loneliness retreating, despite the harsh reality looming right around the corner. As Dean and Cas navigate this fake, but all too real, relationship, can they find the monster that is on a mysteriously motivated killing spree before it’s too late?
Notes: So cute! My favourite trope! And, as an added bonus, the sharing of a bed.
flowers in the backyard by justkeeponwriting on AO3. (34,710 words).
Tags: Alternate Universe - Modern Setting, Homeless Castiel, Domestic Fluff, Sharing a Bed, Minor Character Death, References to Depression, Angst with a Happy Ending, Smut.
My Rating: 4 stars.
Description: After Uncle Bobby’s death, Dean goes to check up on the cabin that he’s inherited. Dean hasn’t been at the cabin for years, but he knows Bobby hasn’t renovated it in ages, so he isn’t very thrilled to be saddled with it. Upon arrival, he notices that unlike he expected, it’s not unoccupied, nor falling apart – instead, a stranger called Castiel has made it into his home.
Notes: This was such a relaxing and gentle read, I nearly fell asleep after I finished it! Cas & Dean’s tentative relationship was written absolutely beautifully, too.
What Happened In Vegas by Ltleflrt on AO3. (18,447 words).
Tags: Sam/Eileen, Alternate Universe - No Supernatural, Teacher Dean, Photographer Castiel, Las Vegas Wedding, Secret Relationship, Sharing a Bed, Switch Dean, Switch Castiel, Fluff.
My Rating: 4 stars.
Description: Long time friends Dean and Castiel are road tripping from Chicago to San Diego for Sam and Eileen’s wedding, and a pitstop in Las Vegas turns into drunken love confessions and a surprise marriage. Turns out the pining has been mutual this whole time, but now they’re finally together and on cloud-fucking-nine. Until they remember that this trip isn’t supposed to be about them. To avoid undermining Sam and Eileen’s important weekend, they decide to keep their new relationship status a secret. They’ll keep the heart eyes toned down and their hands to themselves, but the struggle is real.
Notes: Oh my lord, this was absolutely hilarious (especially that last piece of art - I totally lost it) and adorable. I can totally imagine Dean and Cas getting a cheesy Vegas wedding, and we can all dig Elvis (sorry).
Stories Are Made of Mistakes by wildhoneypie on AO3. (4,942 words).
Tags: Human Castiel, Diners, Hurt/Comfort, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Bisexual Dean, Sharing a Bed, Slow Burn, Slow Build, Case Fic, Domestic, Didn’t Know They Were Dating.
My Rating: 4 stars.
Description: In which Cas is human and doesn't understand basic concepts like: clothing, Mythbusters, moisturizer, and Greek food. Dean is...Dean and doesn't understand basic concepts like: boyfriends, language, how to tell your friend that he's a walking miracle, and when not to quip.
Notes: This was so cute and I live for human Cas. I also love the recurring ‘no fucking quipping’ joke in this, although the idea of Cas swearing broke me a bit!
Sharing the Rain Dog by almaasi on AO3. (19,837 words).
Tags: Alternate Universe - Human, Alternative Universe - Historical (1999), Fluff, Romance, No Angst, Accidental Dating, First Dates, Rain, Dogs, Pets, FBI Agent Castiel, Musician Dean, Singer Dean, Flustered Dean, Domestic Fluff, Friends to Lovers, Moving In Together, Living Together, First Kiss, Sharing a Bed, Cuddling, Smut.
My Rating: 4 stars.
Description: When some asshole hits a dog with his car and drives off, the first two people on the scene are Dean and Castiel. Castiel's an FBI agent with a plane to catch, and he doesn't have time to take the dog to the vet. Dean's a musician, and he doesn't have the money. An agreement is reached: Dean goes, Castiel pays, and they'll exchange details and meet again to work things out. But who gets the dog? Sooner or later they're going to realise that having shared custody of one pitbull isn't ideal. She needs one home, not two. One stable, loving home...
Notes: Rain Dog was so cute, and so was flustered Dean! The hitting a dog joke is starting to get out of hand, though.
This Game We Play by destieldrabblesdaily on AO3. (1,195 words).
Tags: High School AU, Friends to Lovers, Fluff, Bed Sharing.
My Rating: 3 stars.
Description: Dean and Castiel have been best friends since they were little, and sleepovers are a common event. They've always loved playing the game where they draw out letters on each others backs and try to guess what the other is writing. Even though sixteen seems to be a bit too old to still play the game, Castiel uses it as a chance to silently confess something that he's been wanting to share with Dean for a long time.
Notes: This was adorable. I am 100% here for Cas and Dean being childhood friends.

Notes: This was so sweet, and Cas was so cute as a human! Also, I love fics where Sam is just done with the constant sexual tension, it always makes me laugh.
Wee Little Love Child by almaasi on AO3. (10,649 words).
Tags: Fluff, Romance, Kid Fic, Team Free Will, De-Aged Sam Winchester, Cursed Sam Winchester, Mistaken for Being in a Relationship, Sam Winchester ships Dean/Cas, Matchmaker Rowena, Parent Castiel, Parent Dean, Affectionate Dean, Love Confessions, First Kiss, Sharing a Bed, First Time, Friends to Lovers, Domestic Fluff.
My Rating: 3 stars.
Description: After being magically de-aged, little Sammy is under the impression that Dean and Cas are his parents. He wants to know if they're in love, but they can't (or won't) give a consistent answer. The thing is, they have to grant Sam's greatest wish in order to reverse the curse, but they can only do that as a pair. What does Sam want most? For Dean and Cas to express their true feelings. Aloud. To each other.
Notes: Aw, I love Rowena, and I am 100% here for her cursing Sam just to get Dean and Cas to stop being idiots and actually get together.
I’ve said it before and I will say it again: the fans are in control now. We control the Supernatural content we are getting, so please create the ending you would want to see. And, if anyone wants to talk or rant or suggest a fic, I am always here.

Take Me Back (a destiel fanfic)
Summary:  Dean Winchester is the local Detroit Chief of Police working on one of  the most bizarre cases Detroit has ever had. While navigating through  evidence he finds out he has to work with the FBI where he meets Special  Agent Novak. A very intriguing man with a lot of secrets. What do these secrets hold and will Dean get to the bottom of this case?
Tags: Alternate Universe, Slow Burn, Mutual Pinning, Trauma,  Major Character Injury, Angst with a Happy Ending, Implied/Referenced Torture/Child Abuse, Crimes & Criminals, Sexual Tension, Hurt/Comfort
Chapter 5 is now up
The night was foggy, the slight cold breeze dancing around Dean’s skin. The bright street lights were giving the atmosphere the look of a fairytale. The people walking around, families with kids, couples, people walking their dogs. Sometimes Dean hated the big city but at times like these, when it was so beautiful, he loved it.
“You ever showed your art to anyone else?”
Cas looked like he didn’t hear him as it took him a few seconds to look at Dean and respond to the question.
He shook his head. “Uh, not really. It’s just kind of what I do on my own and I don’t think people would be really interested in my personal… hobbies.”
“Well, I am.” Dean said without hesitation. It was almost like his body said that on its own and not really him. But Castiel’s pieces were stunning and they really made Dean have some kind of feeling in him. “I mean your stuff they are… they are great, Cas. And I’d definitely have something like that hung up on my wall.”

Destiel Chronicles
Vol. XLIII
It was a love story from the very beginning.
Being Useful for You
(9x09)
Hello My Friends? Are you enjoying this hiatus and the Holidays???
Here I am with a new meta from this series, this time I'm gonna talk exclusively of episode 9x09 Holy Terror. The Destiel scene here is a classic one, full of flirtation, had been analyzed a hundred of times, so it will be a hundred and one! 🤣🤣
I want to say thank you to my friend @agusvedder she made all the gifs for this meta and discussed the episode with me, thank you my dear! 😍💕
Now, let's began.
Let it shine
When the episode starts... There's this faction of the angels coming into a bar for a fight with Malaqui's angels.
The nuns were singing...
♪ This little light of mine ♪
♪ I'm gonna let it shine ♪
♪ this little light of mine ♪
♪ I'm gonna let it shine ♪
♪ this little light of mine ♪
♪ I'm gonna let it shine ♪
♪ let it shine, let it shine, let it shine ♪
Which is a prelude to Castiel recovering his angel's powers.
But then, inside the bar... The rebels angels, anarchists, were listening this song...
you got a nasty disposition ♪
♪ no one really knows the reason why ♪
♪ you got a bad, bad reputation ♪
♪ gonna hang your head down and cry ♪
♪ you got bad, bad luck ♪
♪ bad, bad luck ♪
♪ you got bad, bad luck ♪
Again this is talking about Castiel, like that bad one between the angels. The one with the bad reputation.
And is not casualty Cas will take the grace from one of the rebels. Because his rebellious nature.
Flirting in front of Sam
When they arrived to the bar, Dean and Sam found Cas already investigating as an FBI agent.
And because Sam was ignoring the whole "Zeke" situation, he saw Cas working and it was fun for him, feeling all proud, he went with the river.
Tumblr media
But Dean wasn't amused. He knew the whole angels want to kill Cas issue, so he knew Cas won't be safe.
But... There was a really blatant flirty situation between Human Cas and Dean.
Castiel was a little drunk, because it was his first time doing that, I think he repeated that like twice, and a very easy going fluidity of words and second meanings.
Let's see ...
CASTIEL: It is so good being together again. You know, this is my first beer as a human. I hope it's okay, me joining you?
SAM: Why wouldn't it be okay?
DEAN (looks alarmed at this turn of the conversation) You know, Cas, are you sure you're ready to jump back into all this? I mean, it seemed to me like you'd actually found some peace.
CASTIEL: Hey, you once told me that you don't choose what you do. It chooses you.
DEAN: Huh?
Tumblr media
Dear is still his role model, and more now that he's a human.... But the flirtation starts with a suggestive movement coming from Castiel. He had lived a couple of flirty situations with Dean in episode 9x06, even if he's kind of innocent, he is not that innocent when is about seduction, as I said so many times, he knows about seduction, and maybe he could notice some of these in Dean when he came alone to see him in the Gas n sip. And then in the car. So he knows... Now there's not boundaries between them. They're both humans... So... A little of alcohol and he went for it...
Look at Castiel's eyes and head movement, he also caressed his bottle gently, with a seductive gaze, he know perfectly what he is doing.
SAM: All right, well, then, in that case, we have to figure out, uh, who are we up against, what do they want, and how do we stop them.
CASTIEL: Well, Bartholomew wants to reverse Metatron's spell. Presumably to – to retake Heaven once his following is large enough. (...)
Tumblr media
Wow... Here. Castiel had lived the fact that Dean had been jealous about Nora, so, why not try jealousy again? Yeah, let's mention this reaper... So Dean picked up that ball quickly.
The reaper you banged well that was kind of hard, and not with a buddy face of approval there... He looks mad, and jealous. Yeah, the reaper you banged, is like a jilted Lover recriminating a betrayal to his lover.
And Cas responds... Yeah, and you stabbed.
And his face is like YEAH, YOU WAS JEALOUS.
We all know Dean killed her because he killed Cas. But the tone of the conversation takes another context because their faces. Is like they're playing there to change the cause of April's death. You stabbed her because I had sex with her and you was jealous of her.
Tasting very dangerous waters... Dean redirect the chat to how hot she was.
Tumblr media
Dean is the one who replaces the gay tension, to the straight safe place. And Castiel follows him. Because he is not unaware of this. He knows exactly what Dean is trying to do. And when Castiel does that, Dean comes back again to openly flirt with him.
Tumblr media
That's a very suggestive gaze, and line, and everything, he even smiled at him with the tongue between his teeth, looking adorable, he know he looks adorable doing that, and I'm pretty sure he uses to seduce. Even the touch in the shoulder, everything here is pure flirtation my friends... And Sam was there... Pure thrid wheel soul looking at them in awe, how they're doing that at sunlight.
Then he will try to be a good brother, and leave them alone, but my sweet Cas didn't pick up that intention... And he will offer himself to go for more beers.
Tumblr media
SAM (smiling at the exchange)
All right. I'm gonna get us another round.
CASTIEL: Nah. I'll get it.
CASTIEL hops off his bar stool, then returns.
Mm. (swigging the last of his old beer, and setting the bottle on the table.)
You know, I've never done this before.
And that line again, he is too cute. But what Cas, you had never flirted so openly with Dean? 🤣🤣🤣
Cas' prayer
But not everything was fun, because we had right there our official cockblocker, Gadriel.
Tumblr media
So, is goodbye again.
Castiel is by himself and he decided to give a try to the pray.
If you recall in episode 9x03 Castiel went to a Church and he found a woman that talked about what faith meant to humans. Well he tries to use some of that, trying to contact other angels to get some info about the case.
That scene of Castiel praying in different postures was delightful. Trying to use what he learned, being human again. He even asked to himself if he's doing it properly.
When he was captured by Malaqui, he uses his strategy again. Malaqui names him like THE GREAT CASTIEL, and he is indeed. His innate soldier flaws again, and he was able to steal grace and scape from their captures. Not just that, but he killed all the angels in that place.
Tumblr media
Why he decided to take Theo's grace and came back to the game like an angel? Because he heard Ezequiel was dead. And again Sam and Dean were in danger. And he felt he wasn't useful in his shape as a human. He thought maybe Dean was trying to protect him because he thought he wasn't useful like that. So he wanted to be useful.
I did what I had to
I will talk about this quote in another volume because it repeats all over season 9, and twice in this episode, first Theo and then Castiel.
But, let's come back to the fact that Castiel took a stolen grace (in one of the most sexy scenes I ever saw... Well... Is Misha, he makes everything hot) because he wanted to save Sam and Dean, to be useful to the battle. And he felt he would be more useful as an angel.
So, he called Dean by the phone (pointing Cas knows Dean's number) and we had this sad conversation...
CASTIEL (on the phone) Dean, I don't have a lot of time, so listen. The leader of the opposition is an angel named Malachi.
DEAN: How do you know that?
The concern is all over Dean's voice, he needs to know because he knows this case was very dangerous for Castiel, and he feels guilty for leaving him alone. Even if he knows Cas is strong, his protective nature can't handle the fact he failed to his friend in protecting him.
CASTIEL: He had me. I, uh, I was tortured. But I got away.
DEAN: How?
CASTIEL: I... I did what I had to. I became what they've become. A barbarian.
Here is the quote, is the mission, for the mission, he became a barbarian.
DEAN: What are you – Cas, where are you?
Dean is sensing Castiel is making bad decisions again, he thinks because he wants to help angels, but the truly reason why is HIM AND SAM.
CASTIEL: It's better I stay away. They're gonna want me even more now. But I'm gonna be all right. I... I got my Grace back. Well, not mine per se, but it'll do.
Tumblr media
This is it. Cas is an angel again. Dean and Cas know they're in war, but... They had began something... Now the boundaries between them are here again... So is kind of frustrating...
Castiel smiles... The mojo is so Dean, to describe his grace. Yes is sad because they will be separated by that difference, but is necessary...
Tumblr media
When Cas says I'm an angel, Dean asks immediately : And you are okay with that?
Because, what would be nice for Cas being a human? He suffered a lot, he doesn't even had a place, or his own bed. Why on Earth Dean was thinking Cas was feeling great as a human? He is not talking about those things, at all, he knows Cas was not having a great life, or great human experience. Then why Dean is asking this? Because of them. Him and Cas. It was obvious they were free, to do, say or even flirt with each other, and that felt good. The easy going, because they were both humans, not boundaries between them. Because both of them knew this. Even with that cockblocker and being apart, maybe Dean was thinking it wouldn't be for ever and eventually, Cas will be living in the bunker with them and maybe... Just maybe... They could be finally together.
So... Because they felt that thing between them, so real now that Cas was a human, so reachable... Why now to choose to be an angel again? Right. War. Mission. That's the way Cas thinks. Goodbye opportunity...
Then, Dean was about to say something... Something we will never know, because Castiel cut him off, I know this is frustrating, but the way Dean says CAS, it could be something coming from his frustrated and concerned heart.
And Cas ... He needed to be useful for Dean. For his mission.
To Conclude:
Castiel and Dean kept flirting. Cas being a human, without boundaries, knowing Dean had flirted with him in episode 9x03, decides to do the same, Dean doesn't stays back, and flirted with him too in front of Sam.
Castiel decided to get back to the game as an angel when he hears Dean and Sam were in danger. He also felt he wasn't useful for Dean, because he rejected him twice, so maybe for this war, he needed to come back powerful like an angel.
I hope you like this meta, I'll see you in the next one!

A Destiel Proposal
Summary: Dean overthinks whether he should propose to Cas or if it’s a dumb idea. Dean talks to Rowena about it. Will Cas say yes? (Of course, he says yes). Bonus Samwena at the end.

Dean swore that everywhere he went there were people talking about being married, getting engaged, and even now, his computer showed him an ad for Tiffany & Co. rings out of the blue. He let out an exasperated sigh. The universe definitely doesn’t give signs, but it’s starting to look like it does. Would Cas even want him to propose? Being an angel and all, Cas probably thinks the whole marriage thing is stupid. It’s not like they can legally get married anyways with both of them being “dead” according to government records. It’s not like he needs to go down on one knee for Cas to know that he loves him. They’ve been together for over a year now and more than once during late nights, half-asleep, he’s admitted to his love that he wants to be together forever. Despite continuously feeling that the whole thing is silly, Dean can’t stop thinking about maybe making the extra, unnecessary, gesture. I mean, “husband,” does have a nice ring to it.
———
The next day Dean finally got his distraction from all that was “too sappy”. He found a case that seemed promising. Sam insisted on going and he convinced Rowena to come along by saying she can go to the spa one of the victims worked at. As much as Dean liked to hang out with Sam and Rowena, there was no way he was going to be their third-wheel. So Cas rode shotgun as Sam and Rowena got too cuddly in the back of the impala.
———
Dean couldn’t believe his eyes when they got to the motel. Right across the street was a small engagement ring store. But he had more important things to do than think about it. It was time to work.
———
It’s been a day and a half since they got there. Sam and Cas went off to interview someone, leaving Dean and Rowena to work out where the monsters were based. Dean caught Rowena staring at him and met her gaze.
“Dean, are you going to propose to Cas?”
“What?,”Dean blurted, shocked by her question, “what would make you ask that?”
“I’ve lost count of how many times you’ve stared at your left hand since we got here. You know, where one puts an engagement ring. Clearly, it’s on your mind.”
That left him speechless.
She continued, “I mean, I’m sure the jewelry store across the street has got you thinking about it. You’ve been dating for over a year, share a room, and have known each other for well over a decade. Are you really going to call him your boyfriend for the rest of your lives?”
Dean rolled his eyes. He once called Cas his “partner” before, but that felt off since he often uses the term when posing as an FBI agent.
“Okay, well, it has been on my mind… It’s stupid though, Cas probably thinks the idea of us getting engaged or married is silly.”
“Dean, I know you’re an idiot, but can you stop being so dumb for a second. Even if he thinks it’s silly, Castiel has grown quite fond of human customs and traditions. I bet he thinks that you don’t want to. Even if it was stupid or whatever you want to call it, that angel would do anything for you. If it makes you happy or if it will possibly make him happy then you should do it. Plus, he’d look so handsome with a ring,” she said with a smirk.
“Well,” he sighed, “I can’t deny that he would look real good with a ring on.”
“So?”
“Hey, I’m just saying when I propose to him, you don’t get to take credit for it. I’ve been thinking about it for a month now.”
Rowena beamed, smiling wide, “Do I at least get to help you pick out a ring?”
“Fine,” Dean reluctantly agreed, a little annoyed but also quite amused, “but we should focus on the case right now.”
“It’ll take five minutes. I’m sure no one will die due to us taking a little break.”
———
It was late at night by the time they finished the hunt. Dean laid down on the bed, freshly clean from taking a shower. Dean played with the ring he bought while Cas took his turn showering. He couldn’t help it. Now that he bought the ring he wanted to propose right away. Sure, a crappy motel room was not the perfect spot and it honestly was quite far from a romantic one, but he was too excited.
Dean hid the ring when he heard the water turn off. He scrolled through his phone until Cas had his pajamas on and tried to cuddle him.
Dean gave him a kiss and got up. Leaving Cas confused. He walked around the bed to stand before the love of his life.
“Hey, Cas. I know we can’t legally get married, and the whole concept of us getting married is quite silly because of that and what not. But I love you so much. I never thought I could love someone the way I love you. I want to be able to call you my husband. And I want you to remember how loved you are by me every time you look down at your left hand and see a ring. I want you to be mine and I want to be yours forever. So, I guess what I’m trying to say is I want to marry you”, Dean gets done on one knee and pulls out the ring, “Castiel, will you marry me?”
Cas jumps up, flying towards him, and kisses him so passionately that Dean almost drops the ring. “Yes”, Cas whispers, his lips against Dean’s. Dean breaks away from another kiss to grab Cas’ hand and put the ring on him.
Time escapes them until they’re out of breath from making out. Cas gets up and pulls out a small black box from his suitcase. Dean’s eyes widen, already watering from overwhelming happiness. Cas gets down on one knee and opens the box that holds a beautiful silver ring. “I was originally going to wait for a more romantic setting, but now seems like the right time. “Dean, will you marry me?”
“Of course”, he huffed out with a laugh, shocked. Dean surprised himself by how giddy he was when Castiel put the ring on him. Dean decided all other questions and conversation could wait until tomorrow, after their post-engagement sex.
———
“Rowena what are you so giddy about?” Sam questioned.
“Well, don’t tell Dean that I told you, but we went engagement ring shopping today! I’m honestly not sure if he’ll propose tonight or wait until later, but I’m excited to see what happens.”
Sam bursts out laughing.
Rowena’s face scrunches, “What’s so funny?!”
“I helped Cas pick out a ring for Dean this morning!”
Rowena falls into him laughing, “Lets play a game! Let’s bet on who we think will propose first?”
“Well, Cas wants to actually plan something nice, much nicer than a motel room, so I might place my bet on Dean’s impulsiveness.”
“We can’t bet on the same person”, she responds rolling her eyes.”
“Well, I can think of another fun game we could play.”
“What’s that?”
“Whoever gets undressed first wins.”
“Prepare to lose.”
“I’d love to.”

REVIEW OF 8X13: EVERYBODY HATES HITLER
Hello. It's been quite some time since I've worked on analyzing Destiel but I'm here to continue with it. Starting with Season 8, Episode 13: Everybody Hates Hitler.

SCENE 1
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
INT. CAMPUS PUB – DAY
Two ATTRACTIVE YOUNG WOMEN in matching sports uniforms are sitting across a table from DEAN, who is wearing a suit.
ATTRACTIVE YOUNG WOMAN 1 He was a really nice old kook.
ATTRACTIVE YOUNG WOMAN 2 Really nice.
DEAN Kook? How so?
ATTRACTIVE YOUNG WOMAN 2 You know, he'd talk a lot to us, to himself, to anyone who'd listen. He was always talking about this secret war that nobody knew was going on.
ATTRACTIVE YOUNG WOMAN 1 Conspiracy stuff – he was obsessed with Nazis.
ATTRACTIVE YOUNG WOMAN 2 But he said they were "Special Nazis." You know, necromancers.
DEAN Necromancers?
A BEARDED YOUNG MAN carrying a fruity drink with a pink umbrella in it sits down at a table nearby. He appears to be watching DEAN.
ATTRACTIVE YOUNG WOMAN 2 Yeah, like from that world of whatever-craft that my little brother is always playing.
DEAN Nazi... necromancers.
ATTRACTIVE YOUNG WOMAN 1 It's sad, isn't it – that old people have to go so crazy?
ATTRACTIVE YOUNG WOMAN 2 I know. It is sad.
DEAN Hmm.
DEAN looks at the BEARDED YOUNG MAN, who is staring at him. The BEARDED YOUNG MAN smiles and raises a hand.
DEAN You, um... [the BEARDED YOUNG MAN looks away] I'm sorry. You, uh, you both saw the accident?
ATTRACTIVE YOUNG WOMAN 1 I can still hear his screams.
ATTRACTIVE YOUNG WOMAN 2 It was like the fire was alive, like – like it was attacking him.
ATTRACTIVE YOUNG WOMAN 1 It was like watching the most awful movie of the most terrible thing you could possibly see.
ATTRACTIVE YOUNG WOMAN 2 It was like that.
DEAN Yeah.
DEAN looks at the BEARDED YOUNG MAN again. After meeting DEAN’s eyes for a moment, the BEARDED YOUNG MAN looks down. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
REVIEW OF SCENE 1
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
To begin, we see that Dean is very distracted by the man in the background. He is focusing more on him, smiling and waving at him, than he is focusing on either of the very attractive ladies or his job at all. He even begins to stutter after having become distracted by the man.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
SCENE 2
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
DEAN holds up his FBI badge to the BEARDED YOUNG MAN.
DEAN Special Agent Bolan.
DEAN puts his badge on the table and the BEARDED YOUNG MAN looks at it.
BEARDED YOUNG MAN Oh, really? Wow. I thought you were like a headhunter or something. [He laughs.]
DEAN This is the second, maybe third time I'm seeing you today? Why you following me, Gingerbread?
BEARDED YOUNG MAN Oh, so we, um... we didn't have a thing back there, huh?
DEAN Back where? W-what, now?
BEARDED YOUNG MAN I'm sorry, man. I – I thought – I thought we had a thing back at the quad, you know – a little "eye magic" moment, and I saw you here [DEAN picks up his badge] and I figured I'd wait until you were done with your meeting and then maybe we might, uh...
DEAN Yeah. Uh, okay, but no – uh, no moment. This is a... federal investigation.
BEARDED YOUNG MAN Is that supposed to make you less interesting? No. I – I'm sorry, man. I hope – I hope I didn't freak you out or anything.
DEAN No. No. I – I'm n-not freaked out. It's just a, you know... a federal thing. It's, uh... Okay… [his phone rings] citizen. As you were.
DEAN walks away.
BEARDED YOUNG MAN You have a good night.
DEAN You – you... [ he turns back to the BEARDED YOUNG MAN and bumps into a table, causing glasses to knock against each other] have a – okay.
DEAN leaves the pub. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
REVIEW OF SCENE 2
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
We find that Dean was distracted by this man because he saw him before, in three different locations. While it originally appeared that Dean was drawn to him for some other reason, we are given the true reason now. I try to take the intention of the writers into consideration when analyzing these scenes and if anything, they may have made the scene previous to this one ambiguous deliberately. Supernatural is very good at keeping things ambiguous at times which is why it's always hard to figure out who the 'bad guy' of the episode is. They give us a tiny bit of information at a time as the episode goes along and I feel that was the case with the scene before this one of Dean being "interested" when, rather, he'd actually seen the man multiple times and was not interested so much as concerned.
That being said, Dean's reaction to thinking the bearded man was homosexual and found him attractive was very interesting. I have said this before but Dean's absolutely terrified of homosexuality, especially when it's directed at him, and one has to wonder why he's so extreme about it. He was entirely flustered during this scene and was doing his best to escape as soon as possible. He wasn't acting disgusted, he was acting frightened. It reminded me of scenes in other shows or movies where a guy, or girl, has a crush and gets flustered to the point of dropping their books or spilling their drink. We've all seen it before. I got the impression that he was running from his own repressed desires more than anything. One doesn't usually react that way just because they're not interested; it's the fear that they may actually be interested that would create such a reaction. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
SCENE 3
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
DEAN (on phone) Huh. Well, uh, the two very hot co-captains of the women's volleyball team agree that the rabbi's death was very unnatural. I think we still got a case.
SAM (on phone) That would explain why I have something stuck to my shoe.
DEAN (on phone) You being followed?
SAM (on phone) Yeah, I think so.
DEAN (on phone) That's weird. I thought I was being followed earlier. Turned out to be a gay thing.
SAM (on phone) What?
DEAN (on phone) Nothing. You need a hand? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
REVIEW OF SCENE 3
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The fact that Dean, just after having panicked over the situation with the gay man, over-compensates by mentioning how very attractive the girls were says something. He didn't show any attraction to them during the scene he was talking to them, and in fact, was focused more on the man. This is almost blatant over-compensating, and why would he feel the need to do that unless he'd had some gay thoughts of his own? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
SCENE 4
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
DEAN So, wait. What you're saying is that you and me – we, uh, didn't have a moment?
RABBI BASS’ GRANDSON No, man. I was tailing you.
DEAN [to SAM] Told you I was being followed. He was my gay thing. [to RABBI BASS’ GRANDSON] It was really good. You really had me there. It was very smooth. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
REVIEW OF SCENE 4
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dean seems to express some sort of disappointment here for one reason or another. Despite his obvious fear during that scene, perhaps deep down, he was flattered. And Dean saying he was "smooth", could be taken in more ways than one. I feel perhaps he meant "good job, you really knew how to scare me off" or "good job, I really thought you were gay with how well you were hitting on me". ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
OVER ALL REVIEW
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Over all, there's nothing made clear during this episode and it is ambiguous as is very often the case with this show. I feel all of what was said or done could be taken as Dean being afraid of his own repressed desire though this could also easily be denied and said that it meant none other than "Dean was afraid of the gay because he's far from it". I personally feel it's more than that but I feel it can be left to the viewer's interpretation. Perhaps the writers did that on purpose - not really crossing over the line enough to upset some viewers, but also coming close enough to that line to leave others questioning.
This isn't exactly related to Destiel but I feel at times that, because Castiel inhabits a male vessel, it may be necessary to point out scenes such as this.
DESTIEL RATING AFTER EPISODE (BASED ON HOW BELIEVABLE): 5/10

Tinsel and Tourists - Chapter Eleven

Cas’ POV
Link to ao3 / Link to masterpost
“What about these jeans with that green and blue plaid?” Libby asked, pulling out a black pair of skinny jeans and a flannel shirt.
“Yes to the jeans, no to the shirt,” Cas said from his bed as Libby rooted through his closet.
“What’s wrong with the shirt? I like it,” Libby said.
“I’m not going on a date with Dean wearing that shirt. It isn’t…” Cas trailed off, gesturing with his hand as if he could magically make the words come to him.
“Not enough to scream ‘I’m hot and single and very into you so please make out with me’,” Libby supplied, dodging the pillow when Cas threw it at her.
“Be serious, Libby. I called you over here because I need your help. I want to look-“
“Smoking hot, yeah yeah, I know,” Libby said, sticking her tongue out at Cas. “What about this light blue shirt? It brings out your eyes,” she said, holding the shirt up next to the black jeans.
“That- that’s actually not bad,” Cas said, standing up and plucking the clothes from Libby’s hands.
“You really like him, don’t you? I mean like, not just casually into him. I mean, you’re seriously starting to fall for him, aren’t you?” Libby asked as Cas changed.
Cas hesitated, looking over at Libby from the corner of his eye as he pulled the shirt on. Admitting it out loud was daunting. And maybe he was crazy? Okay, more than just maybe. Falling for someone you’d just met was ridiculous and stupid. But Cas couldn't deny he’d been lovestruck from the second he’d laid eyes on Dean. It felt cosmic. Like love at first sight but stronger.
“I do,” Cas finally said as he turned around to face Libby. “There’s… there’s something about him, Lib. I can’t even describe it.”
“Love at first sight?” she asked, voicing the thought that had been floating around in Cas’ head.
“Yes… and no. Stronger than that.”
Libby blew out a breath, looking at Cas in awe before she stepped forward and unbuttoned the top two buttons of his shirt. “Stronger than you felt for Travis?”
Sighing, Cas stepped away. “You just had to bring him up?”
“I’m sorry, I wasn’t trying to be like that. I just- Cas… I’ve never seen you like this. Not even when you were with Travis. You’re happy. Happier than you’ve been since you moved back here. From my perspective, I don’t know, he looks like the one. I just want to know how you’re feeling.”
Flopping back down onto his bed, Cas rubbed his hands over his face and took a deep breath. “I wish I could put it into words. Is it stupid? That I already feel stronger for Dean than I ever did with Travis?”
Sitting down gently, Libby moved to gently stroke her fingers through Cas’ hair. “No, Cas, I don’t think it’s stupid. The heart wants what it wants.”
“Why does this sound like the same speech you gave me when I came out to you?” Cas teased.
“Shut up, it isn’t,” Libby said, ruffling his hair. “What I meant was… go for it, Cas. If he makes you happy, then you need to give yourself permission to fall. You’ve been so guarded with your heart for so long. And I don’t want to see you get hurt again, especially because Dean’s a tourist. But even I can see how much you like him. I mean, you basically haven’t left your phone all day in case he calls or texts you. If you’re looking for approval, I like him, Cas. I do. And if anyone can make it work, it’s you. But you just need to open yourself up to the possibility that you’re falling for him.”
“You think I’m holding myself back?” Cas asked, looking up at Libby carefully.
“I think you’re scared to fall again after Travis. But I think what you have here is good, Cas. Really really good. Make a move. Kiss him. Don’t hold back. You just gotta allow yourself to actually-“
“To actually have a relationship again? Yeah, I know,” Cas said quietly, before he pulled himself up into a sitting position. “He makes me want to. To have a relationship again, I mean. I can see myself being his boyfriend. I just don’t know if he wants it, too.”
Libby smiled, patting Cas warmly on the knee before getting up and pulling one of Cas’ jackets out; handing it to him with a smile. “Well, you won’t figure that out by sitting here and talking to me. It’s almost 7, and I know you’ve been stalling because you’re nervous.”
“What? I have not!” Cas said in an affronted tone.
“Honey, I know you. You’ve got that ‘butterflies in your stomach’ look on your face. Now go on. Go down to the ice skating rink and get your man,” she said. “And don’t forget to kiss him. Not just a peck either. If you don’t kiss that man senseless, so help me God, I will.”
Cas tugged on his shoes, shooting Libby a look. “Go find your own FBI agent to fall in love with. This one’s mine.”
Libby smirked. “Oh, possessive are we?”
Cas stuck his middle finger up and grabbed his keys, hot cocoa, and the mistletoe Dean had requested. “You can see yourself out,” he said, throwing some snark into his tone.
“Or I could just crash on your couch and use your Netflix account,” she called after him.
“Wouldn’t be the first time,” he replied as he slipped out of the front door and made his way to his truck.
Driving back into town, Cas nervously drummed his fingers on the wheel. Libby was right; he really did feel like butterflies were consuming his stomach. He was nervous and excited. And all he could think about was kissing Dean.
Did he kiss him as soon as he saw him? Did he wait until they were skating? Should he kiss him at the end of the date?
By the time Cas parked and got out of the car, his eyes instantly found Dean, looking even more attractive than ever, sitting on a bench near the ice skating rink. Grabbing the hot cocoa and sliding the mistletoe into his pocket, Cas took a deep breath and tried to steady his hands as he walked over to meet Dean; thoughts still whirling on the perfect time to kiss him.

4.14 - Sex and Violence
I’m going to call this the episode that hellers should watch a hell of a lot more closely.  This is a very long post but there’s so much going on in this episode that can’t be summarised and I want to capture it all so I’ll put it under a cut this time.
Dean wakes up and Sam’s not in bed, but in the bathroom whispering on the phone.  It couldn’t look more like Sam’s having a secret affair if they tried, which he kind of is, going off with Ruby.
Did Sam just call Dean kiddo?  Dude, he’s four years older than you and thirty!
Sam’s puppy eyes and “please” work on the guy they are interviewing who bludgeoned his wife to death in the opener with a meat tenderiser, so he tells them about the stripper he was going to run off with.
Sam goes to speak to the Dr involved in the case and oh my God, Dr Cara has dark hair, and if you change the last two letters, we get Cass!  Definitely hinting at Sastiel which is totally end game (me if I was a heller).
Dr Cara asks to see Sam’s badge again which he shows with a lot more confidence than when he was a bikini inspector in the early seasons. He also looks like an FBI agent instead of a kid just out of high school.   My bby is growing up
Hellers need to watch this episode if only because the doctor explains what oxytocin is - which explains why Destiel is not now and never will be canon because there is absolutely zero attraction between Dean and Castiel. I don’t even think Castiel;s body would release any hormones.
Dean walks in and Dr Cara brushes him off and goes back to speaking to Sam. Heh.  Later Dean accuses Sam of c-blocking him.  No Dean, she’s just into Sam and given your brother is really smoking hot, it should happen a lot more often than it does.  Dean quickly cheers up though as they seem to be on a case involving strippers, finally.
They figure out through a phone call with Bobby - and how did the Winchesters cope before him? - that they are dealing with a siren.
The strippers are named after Disney princesses: Ariel, Aurora, Jasmine and next up Belle.
Hellers, this line (which Sam says to Dean in the strip club) will be important later in the episode:  “Yeah. You see, sirens can read minds. They see what you want most and then they can kinda, like, cloak themselves. You know, like an illusion.”
Remember it looking like Sam was having an affair earlier in the episode?  Now Dean’s checking through Sam’s phone to see who he called.  He dials a number he doesn’t recognise and it’s Ruby.  Dean’s pissed.  When Sam returns and Dean tells him he forgot his cell phone, Sam looks guilty.  Oh show.
They find out from Bobby that to kill the siren, they need some of his venom which may be in the blood of the guys so they go back to the hospital.  Sam and Dr Cara flirt and Dean rolls his eyes.
FBI man, Nick Munroe’s arrived and incidentally, the actor, Jim Parrack, is listed as the same height as Jared on google.  I liked Jim’s role in this, quality guest stars in both Cara and Jim.
Nick phones the number on Sam’s FBI card to check their credentials and we see that Bobby has a list of phones covering Federal marshals, FBI, CDC, police and health inspectors which is a nice little detail.
Sam persuades Dean to work with Nick to get him out of the way so that Sam can get the blood samples.  Dean agrees, but he’s not doing it for Sam, he’s doing it for the girls.
Sam finds the blood gone.  Switch to Dean who is bonding with Nick in the strip club.  Nick hands over an evidence bag containing a flower which he says was found at each crime scene.  Dean recognises the flower from Dr Cara’s office.
Cut to Sam and Cara talking about the case, and Cara says at one point: “Come on. Haven't you ever been in a relationship where you really love somebody and still kinda wanted to bash their head in?  ”I’m thinking yes, Dr Cara and that person is his brother.
Dr Cara offers Sam a drink and for the first time in Sam’s history, he accepts (he’s normally the one stopping Dean from taking things - like the Carrigan’s offering peanut brittle in A very Supernatural Christmas episode.
Dean calls and Sam rejects the call.
Sam and Dr Cara get it on and that’s twice Sam’s been shirtless this season.  I mean if I’d worked as hard as Jared to get that body, I’d want to show it off a little too.
Sam returns to the motel - and we get a beautiful shot from behind of what appears to be a freshly showered Sam walking down the corridor to the room.  Velma Dinkley is right, those shoulders...
Dean’s not in the room so Sam calls him.  There follows a whole conversation which I can’t do justice to, but basically Dean tells Sam he thinks the siren is Dr Cara.  Sam tells him he doesn’t think it is.  Dean asks Sam if he slept with her, which Sam denies and we get this from Dean: “Holy crap. You did. Middle of Basic Instinct and you bang Sharon Stone? Sam, you could be under her spell right now!” and also this one, “No, It's just...first it's Madison, and then Ruby, and now Cara. It's like... what is with you and banging monsters?”
Upshot of the conversation is that Dean doesn’t trust Sam and he’s going to finish off the case himself.  I love Dean, I do, and I’d love to say he’s already under the siren’s spell during all of this, but he’s not.  My bitter Sam girl is starting to rise up and Season 4 only gets worse from here on out.
The only consolation I have is that Sam looks smoking hot during that entire conversation.  Jared really suits the dark suit and the open necked shirt look.
Sam throws his phone after that conversation and I think we’re supposed to see this as Sam becoming angry and unable to control it.  I’d have thrown my phone too after that conversation so try harder on the anger front show.
Dean phones Bobby and asks for his help and then Nick to help him with the case and they start following Dr Cara.
Dean tells Nick his crazy theory, and asks Nick to just trust him on that.  To Dean’s surprise and delight Nick agrees.  Dean says. “Thank you. That's actually nice to hear.”
They share a drink from Dean’s hip flask which is a bad move on Dean’s part, because Nick then says Dean should have wiped the flask before drinking, revealing he’s the siren.
Hellers, this next line is also important: “ I should be your little brother. Sam. You can't trust him. Not like you can trust me. In fact, I really feel like you should get him outtta the way, so we can be brothers. Forever.”
Sam’s been out - not sure where - and when he returns to the motel, he sees Nick sitting on the bed.  He asks what he’s doing there but gets jumped from behind and pulled back against the door with a knife to his throat by Dean.  Sam quickly figures out that this is not normal behaviour - even for Dean - and accuses NIck of being “one butt ugly stripper.”
Sam doesn’t struggle in Dean’s arms too much and I got to say he looks kind of comfortable where he is.  Sam tries to appeal to get through to Dean, but Nick shows Dean is under his control by getting him to cut Sam’s neck a little.
Hellers, this next line is again important.  When Sam accuses Nick of poisoning Dean, Nick answers: “No. I gave him what he needed. And it wasn't some bitch in a G-string. It was you. A little brother that looked up to him, that he could trust.”   The episode could not hammer this home more clearly, how on earth do you all misinterpret the hell out of this episode?
Nick sprays Sam’s mouth with venom and I’m only slightly disappointed he didn’t get closer to Sam to do it.  Honestly, Jim and Jared only had a couple of scenes but they were good ones and I love when Nick beckons Sam forward and he just goes.
There follows a brilliant scene between Sam and Dean with lots of hurtful things being said between them (again it sounds more like Dean’s accusing Sam of having an affair than anything else).
My favourite line during this is from Sam and the delivery was perfect: “You're too busy sitting around feeling sorry for yourself. Whining about all the souls you tortured in hell. Boo hoo.”
BROTHER FIGHT!  And we should have more of these, if for the only reason that Jared and Jensen are seamless in the fight choreography when it’s between the two of them.
Dean wins the fight, by crashing Sam through the motel door and it’s interesting the only time I can remember Sam winning is when he was hopped up on demon blood.
Sam’s lying winded on the door, Dean grabs a conveniently located emegency axe and goes to swing it.
Bobby’s arrived!  And just in the nick of time.  He stops the axe and stabs Dean to get some infected blood and to Sam’s anguished cries of “no!”, he throws the knife at a rapidly retreating Nick, killing him.
That shot of Sam on the floor at the end of the scene :(
At the end of the episode, they both say they didn’t mean the things they said:
SAM: 'Kay. So... so we're good?
DEAN: Yeah, we're good.
Narrator’s voice: They were not good.
What I am going to point out loud and clear for the final time, is that for all four men, the woman appeared as a stripper and they thought they loved her so the relationship was clearly sexual.    For Dean, his siren is a representation of his brother.
Coming up, Sam and Dean go to couple therapy.  (Which I’ll come back to in episode 4.18 (The Monster at the end of this book).
If it’s not clear, I loved this episode, even with all the brother angst - ok, if I’m going to be completely honest, especially with all the brother angst.
Next up Death Takes a Holiday.

Supernatural: Ouroboros (14x14)
Well, that was just great!
Cons:
This is an odd thing to comment on, but sometimes I feel like the acting in the pain reactions is sort of... off. Like there's this big moment towards the end of the episode where Jack is doing his cool power surge thing on Michael, and Sam, Dean, and Cas all cringe because of a high ringing noise. Their reactions were not simultaneous - Dean did his a beat after Sam and Cas, and I feel like I could almost hear someone off-camera cuing them when to react to the sound that was added in post. It's actually not the first time I've noticed something like that in Supernatural. Just thought I'd mention it here.
If that's the end of Michael, then I've got to say... he was not nearly as cool of a villain as I was hoping for. The final showdown being between Jack and Michael didn't feel earned, since Dean is the one who has been struggling with him all this time. On a similar note, why did all of the hunters have to die? We didn't spend enough time developing them to make their deaths have impact. I feel like some very, very, slight scriptural changes could have been made to justify keeping this larger ensemble in the wings... we almost had the perfect system! Just a throw-away line about Sam calling in to check on various hunts, or someone mentioning that a few of the hunters have moved to different cities to set up their own headquarters... that's all I would have needed. Why undo the idea of Sam as the new Bobby, running a network of hunters? That was a great concept that was thrown away because the extra people were somewhat inconvenient to explain away.
Pros:
But for the most part? This episode was amazing! Let's start with the case-of-the-week aspect. The Gorgon was actually properly sinister, and the imagery was really gory. It was kind of old-school Supernatural in a way I appreciated, even though it put me off a little bit to see the Gorgon reach into his victim's chest cavity. I also liked how creative the case was, with the bad guy able to stay one step ahead by eating his victim's eyes and seeing the future. I like starting cases in medias res. We know that the Winchester crew has been on this guy's trail for a while now, which only heightens the danger and tension when they finally start to catch up. The Gorgon's performance was just the right amount of actually scary and totally camp. I appreciated that he was going after male victims because recently women have started to be too cautious about strangers.
Rowena was an unexpected delight this week. I love her banter with Sam, the fact that she's not-so-secretly worried about Jack, her willingness to let Michael in so she can protect her friends... it was all excellent. I'm also pleasantly surprised that she survived the hour. The moment she was possessed by Michael, I thought Sam was going to be able to kill Michael by killing Rowena, thus fulfilling Rowena's prophesied death. That would have been pretty brutal, but also predictable, and I'm really glad we didn't go that route.
The scene where Rowena and Sam pretend to be concerned dog owners was hilarious, and the punchline of the dog actually being Jack worked great. I love that Rowena plays up the camp of it all, and although Sam is a bit exasperated, he plays along and pretends that they really are a couple. Rowena's right - pretending to be FBI agents isn't the only way to get things done when working a case!
Everybody knows about Supernatural's famous "power creep" problem, and it's also common among fans to make fun of the way the boys are always tossed around during fights with monsters without ever seeming to suffer any lasting harm. Some of my favorite C-plot episodes are ones that break this pattern. This wasn't exactly a C-plot, of course, but it had a basic monster-of-the-week setup for a lot of it, and then suddenly Dean gets a head injury and nobody can wake him up. I loved this, because it reminded everyone of the mortality of these characters. More specifically, the fact that they don't know they're on a TV show, and are never going to die going after a one-episode monster. Sam's worry for Dean was enormously touching. He asks Rowena desperately what he should do. It's all so... mundane. Obviously everyone's worried about Michael trapped in Dean's head, but more than that, it's just the same worry anyone would have when dealing with a serious head injury. I loved how simple it was, while still tying in to the A-plot.
Let's talk about Cas. This was a great episode for him. Seeing him on the hunt with the rest of the team was obviously a lot of fun, especially since he does a good job and seems to be a competent hunter. The scene with Cas and Dean at the restaurant is obviously one that people are going to be talking a lot about. Dean is always so careful with Cas, sort of gentle with him like he doesn't want to upset him, but also doesn't want to accidentally fall into the trap of Cas' concern, because he's afraid it'll break him. I love that Cas can see through Dean's nonchalance, and I especially love that Cas tells Dean how impressive he's being by keeping Michael at bay. Obviously there's not a lot Cas can do in the moment to help Dean, but I do think it's important for Dean to understand his own strength, and know that his family believes in him.
And then there's the delightful Destiel angst - the look on Cas' face when he woke up and realized that Dean was in trouble, the crack in his voice when he told Sam he couldn't heal him... just murder me now. In particular, the conversation between Jack and Cas was just so precious and important. Whatever happens in the future of this show, I will always maintain that Cas is in love with Dean - Misha seems to be playing to that specifically. And yet he lives with a great burden: Dean and Sam, his family, are mortal. Even if they keep defying the odds and live to an old age, Cas will likely lose them before they lose him. Jack is still so new to the world, and he's still learning that loving mortals is a curse as well as a gift. I liked having a conversation between these two immortal beings, to contextualize the journey of these characters in a new way.
So... Jack. I'm of two minds about what happens at the end of this episode. Is it really as easy as that? Is Jack fully back to power, restored, and no longer using his soul to keep himself going? Did we just kill two birds with one stone, and clear the slate for different problems moving forward? Or... does Jack have his powers back, but at the expense of a piece of his humanity? I like not knowing. I'm pretty okay with anything that lets Jack stick around, honestly. And that moment? Calling himself a Winchester? My heart grew three sizes, I swear. I love that kid.
I think that's where I'll stop for now. There was a lot of stuff that I really, really enjoyed in this episode. It made me stop thinking about the shape of the season, or what's going to happen next, or how all of the pieces will fit together. While I was watching it, I was totally engrossed, and I can't wait for next week!
9/10
