#i grew up on hercule poirot. i still love hercule poirot.
Text
actually i love it when the characters are all lying. i love it when they all have secrets and none of them trust each other. i love being given clues that solve puzzles i haven't even been presented with yet. i also love it when i get chills watching a scene without even knowing what it means, and when i do know what it means, i get even more chills. i love theorizing and thinking and solving and coming up with possibilities of where a story might be going. i love it and i will do it for free, for fun, for no real reason.
this is a mystery appreciation post!! if you appreciate mysteries and secrets and stories that slowly unravel before you, please interact!!!

January Prompt: Envelope p4.
For SherlockChallenge January's prompt
And now our other mystery solvers
Tumblr media
Mycroft Holmes, Arthur Hastings, and Hercule Poirot under the cut
Mycroft Holmes
Mycroft searched their home until he found MC.  They were making little notes in their latest script.  After watching them for a moment he snuck up from behind and gently blew on their neck, smirking as they jumped slightly.
“Mycroft!”  They scolded with the cutest pout on their face as they turned to face him.
“Yes, my dear?” He sat down next to them and held out an envelope. “If you have a moment I would love to share these with you.”  Their expression quickly shifted to curiosity and moved closer to him.
Carefully he removed the papers from the envelope and grinned as he presented them to MC. Little childish doodles, and shaky words were written across the pages, but he didn’t have to wait long for their eyes to light up with recognition.  “But how?”
Mycroft’s grin only grew as he watched them read over the barely legible writing of their younger self.  “It’s really cute how you always wanted to be an actress.”  He picked up a page of her writing about being in the school play and how much she loved it, complete with a doodle of her on stage, or presumably a stage.  “I want to add these to your album so we can cherish this memory of your youth.”
“I still can’t believe you got these for me.”
He tenderly pushed their hair behind their ear and watched the soft expression on their face, warm as they relived those moments from years ago.  He could let them believe he got those pages only for them, as long as he could keep this moment, their expression, to himself.
Arthur Hastings
Arthur handed MC her bag back, but he couldn’t help the way he stared at the boys who had stopped them on their walk.  They were so excited to get her autograph. He didn’t blame them, but he was aware that they were on a little bit of a time crunch.  The way she smiled at them, it warmed his heart to see her interacting with her fans, but it still ached.
MC slipped their hand in his as they continued down the street.  “Sorry about that Arthur, let’s get-”
“MC!” Diana, her manager, called out to them.  The tall woman was grinning ear to ear, the grin seemed to only increase when she saw Arthur next to her. “Oh this is the perfect timing, I’m so glad I was able to catch you!  You would never believe this, but you know those offices the studio used to be out of a few years ago? Well, they were cleaning out the space for the new tenets and found a lot of old unanswered fan mail the show received! Including…” she held out the envelope, “tada!”
Arthur’s stomach twisted in recognition of the handwriting on the envelope, his handwriting.
MC seemed to realize it as well when she glanced up at him. She took the envelope from Diana, and turned it over, showing Arthur’s name and his old address from back then as the return recipient.
“It must be fate’s way of wanting to celebrate you two coming together by having this finally delivered to you! Open it,” Diana giggled and danced a little in place, “I cannot wait to hear what you wrote!”
Arthur quickly grabbed the envelope and held it behind his back, the heat on his cheeks warning him of how red he was turning.  “Maybe this was better off left unread.”
MC looked up at him with those big eyes of theirs that had Arthur feeling like he wanted to share it with them. “If it means that much to you…” They said understandingly, but Arthur could hear the disappointment. He closed his eyes and sighed.
“I’ll read it to you later, when we’re alone.”  He glanced at Diana to make sure she understood.
MC quickly grabbed onto his arm.  “Then it’s a date.”
Hercule Poirot
“Is this all of them?” Hercule started to sort the envelopes that had tumbled out of MC’s bag, placing them into neat little piles.
“All the ones I’ve found.” They sat down across from Hercule watching him as he observed the front of the envelopes before adding them to a category.
“So run me through the facts again, you found these in the dressing room?”
“Yes, well, not exactly. I was changing but there was a rip in the jacket and the head of wardrobe said there should be a jacket from a different production that should work, so we went to go grab it, and in the storage, there was an envelope on the ground and I was surprised to see my name on it.”
“I see,” Hercule flipped on envelope over, observing the front and back, before carefully pulling out the RSVP from the envelope and studied it. “From there you found the bag with the rest of these little envelopes?”
“Yes.” They nodded, nervously looking at the envelopes.
“And these look like your handwriting but you didn’t write these?”
“Yes.” Their shoulders slumped a little.
Hercule looked up from the envelope, turning his attention to them. “Hastings!” He called out.
“Yes?” The tall man with dark hair called from his room.
“If you would, get the kettle going, please. I do believe MC and I could use some tea.”  He looked over at them reassuringly. “Don’t fret, we will get to the bottom of these curious invitations.”
“But the party noted is for this weekend at my home.” They reached out for one of the envelopes and read over the RSVP, slightly shaking.
“Well, then may I suggest we look into what it takes to throw a party? Perhaps the person who set these invitations out will be in attendance.” He spoke confidently, bringing a smile to their face, while his gaze dropped to the envelope that had caught his attention earlier. The one with a newer stamp on it than the others.

💛 & 📖 for the lovely Alice?
💛- Brotp
Ok, three Brotps come to mind.
The one that has been under the spotlight lately: Andre & Alice, the A-Team of fashion at Hogwarts! Admittedly, Andre plays a big part in the fashion area of that duo, but he does help Alice develop her sense of style. Though it is sometimes against her will 😏
Second Brotp: Alice & Tonks! Another friendship I love writing for, which you can mostly get a glimpse of in my "A Week at Penny’s" series (which is still ongoing). Tonks helps Alice let loose and enjoy just being a teenager, while Alice tries to keep her out of trouble. I love the dynamic between these two.
Final Brotp: Alice & Rowan. Dear Rowan. Alice's first friend, who accepted her even when she was just known as "Jacob's sister" and most people assumed she was just as strange as her brother. Alice and Rowan had similar personalities, both having a love for learning, though Alice didn't mind breaking rules as much as Rowan. You can actually see the hole Rowan left in Alice's life after her death in the fic "Sempre Aqui" from my Brazil series.
📖- AU I’d like to see them in
Oh, that's a tough one. Maybe a mystery novel à la Agatha Christie. I would kill to see Alice help Hercule Poirot solve a murder. (I grew up watching David Suchet's Poirot and would love seeing Alice wearing the fashion of the Art Deco period.)
Another AU I'd like to see Alice in is Sailor Moon. Not as one of the main Sailor Scouts, but maybe a Sailor Scout from a distant planet, or something. (Sailor Moon is my childhood and when my interest in Japan started.)
Thanks for the ask!

@starlene tagged me to share five of my favourite male characters. Thank you for the tag ♥ Like her, I’m going to tell you in detail why these are my favourite boys. Bear with me! These are not in any strict order, except for the first one, he will always be the number one in my heart.
1. Javert, Les Misérables
When I first read Les Misérables I was so fascinated by Javert’s character. Javert is the complete opposite of "a bad cop antagonist”, he follows the law to a fault and in a book like Les Mis, in which the society is the real villain, that is his personal failing.
His integrity is also kind of touching to me. The way he will believe a nun that’s known not to lie, even when he should be doubting her words, and the way Javert himself never tells a lie, even when he’s supposed to act as a spy. He really has “nothing ignoble about him”, as Hugo says. Also how when he sees the error in his ways, his last act is to criticize the system he has upheld.
Javert is such a sad character. His parents were possibly as downtrodden as Valjean, so he grew up to be someone who believes he’s doing the right thing, even when he’s trampling the ones society has already abandoned. That is a true tragedy and it never stops being interesting to me.
2. Lehto, Tuntematon sotilas
Oh boy. Possibly my worst son. He is a character from this one Finnish war novel, who doesn’t like anything or anyone and has a giant chip on his shoulder from god-knows-where. He is considered grim and nasty by his peers, he hates the authority and gets anxious when anyone talks about spirituality or patriotism. In other words, I love him.
Don’t get me wrong, once again we have a bad person here. He torments this one guy simply for being scared (and like, they are in war so what the fuck my dude), once he kills someone just because, and he in general never does anything nice for anyone. But then again, he’s only twenty-one in the book and he does not live long enough to learn and I would like to see him growing. I’m also interested in his past of which we only know that he has been “alone” since he was a child. And there is something very appealing about his defiant personality. As my psychologist mother said after seeing 2 minutes of Lehto in one movie adaptation, “boys like that are not good at expressing themselves that well, he needs understanding and support”. So yeah... I have a soft spot for this guy.
3. Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie’s Poirot
I really don’t know what this sweet little man is doing on this list. I’ve liked Poirot since I was a child but I feel like I for a long time didn’t quite understand how well written his character is. I’m mostly talking about the books and David Suchet’s iconic portrayal, but I also really really liked the new ABC Murders with John Malkovich. Poirot’s backstory really did it for me, it made so much sense and put a whole new spin in this character.
In general I just love Poirot’s manner of speaking and his little quirks - how persnickety he is, his pickiness with food, how polite he is and his dramatics, especially when he gathers all the suspects together and lets them hear it. I love how in Christie’s novels he uses people’s prejudices against foreigners to his advantage, kind of like Marple uses the fact people usually are not too cautious around little old ladies. My favourite thing about Poirot, especially in Suchet’s portrayal, is his empathy and how that makes him a better detective. He can feel for victims and culprits alike, and he is great at figuring motives because he talks to people and sees what makes them tick. I love this man and his little gray cells.
4. Thomas Barrow, Downton Abbey
Bad boys are back, alright! Or you know... Misunderstood boys. Silly boys. Boys who get hurt every time they let someone in and that feeds their rage so they say “I’ll do it on my own”... Julian Fellowes really thought he could make an evil gay servant and people would just be like “okay so that one’s a jerk, can we see more of Lady Mary’s love life now?”. But he went and cast RJC and accidentally wrote the most interesting character in the whole Classist Propaganda: The TV Show.
Thomas Barrow is a complicated character and that makes him so appealing to me. He seems to be tough and cold, but he’s also very sensitive and many of the bad things he does are motivated by jealousy or hurt. He is clever and driven, but he can and most certainly will make bad decisions. Characters in the show think he’s heartless, but he likes being around children and when he falls in love with someone, he falls hard and fast. He’s also hopelessly devoted to those near him. I guess one of the big reasons I like Thomas so much is that he’s so severely mistreated by the show. He gets repeatedly punished for even small things he does, whereas other characters can do worse things and other characters and the mainstream audience still like them. I guess that makes me kind of protective of him, and willing to read a thousand fics about how he gets everything he has ever wanted in life.
5. Gregory House, House M.D.
I’m on my House binge once again and let me tell you - Season One Dr House is actually a good guy? Like sure he’s sarcastic and irresponsible and wants to do things his own way and throws a hissy fit when he doesn’t get his way, but in so many ways he is actually nice. That, of course, changes when the show marches on, but who said all character development has to be positive?
I like hospital dramas and I like detective shows, therefore I love House M.D. And this is a rare case in which the main character in a series is the most interesting one. I also love Wilson, but I relate to him a bit too much in certain ways (the internet says it’s because we’re both INFJ) for him to be that enjoyable for me. But House is interesting and once again, complicated. Making this list is making me once again face the fact I like characters who have a strict set of rules for themselves. House is a textbook example of Chaotic Neutral, but like it’s said in the series, his work is motivated by doing what he thinks is right. And it’s really important to him to be right himself. What I also like about him is that even though he is a typical “genius jerk”, he actually consistently gets called out on his behaviour. We get to see how his behaviour is the reason he has only a handful of meaningful relationships and why being like him is nothing to be proud of. A cool drinking game, take a shot every time he’s described as “miserable”. Have fun.
*
Huh, that was a lot. Let’s tag some people! @obiskus , @juniper-pompadour , @trevardes and @violasmirabiles , share your favourite boys, if you feel like it! Feel free to either just say the names or ramble like I did :’)

Finished Hercule Poirot: the Complete Short Stories by Agatha Christie. Probably would rate it an 8/10... but holy frick, it felt like I was reading the Bible with how long it took me to read. Maybe around 30 hours? 40, even? Then again, it is over a thousand pages, so I guess that makes sense.
Being a longtime (and when I say longtime, I mean a long time; I grew up proudly lugging a 5-pound edition of The Complete Sherlock Holmes everywhere I went during elementary school) fan of Sherlock Holmes, I started reading the book with what was, quite frankly, an undeservedly warped perspective on Poirot.
During the first couple short stories, it was difficult for me to view Poirot objectively because of my fondness for Sherlock. Several superficial details really stuck out to me- for example, Inspector Japp vs Inspector Lestrade, the fact that they seemed to both prefer armchair musings to active detective work (but then again, I would say this is true for many intellectuals), a sidekick of lesser intelligence to feed their egos and highlight their own genius by stark contrast (Hastings vs. Watson)- who both, coincidentally, happen to be formerly military men, both the detectives’ bases of operation being London apartments... and a few other points besides.
However, the longer I continued to read, the more I grew to appreciate the differences between Poirot and Holmes. I liked how open Poirot was to communicating with other people. Sometimes, with Holmes, because of his sociopathic tendencies, he seemed to have a very consistent contempt for the intelligence of most others besides himself (with, perhaps, exceptions in the cases of The Woman, Moriarty, and his brother Mycroft). It was refreshing to read Poirot, a detective who treated others with respect and a rather gentlemanly courtesy.
Even more distinctive of Poirot is his theatrical flair. Of course, Holmes has a flair for the dramatic, as well, but Poirot is so unabashedly himself and unapologetic about his abilities that I think it’s quite a lovable trait. Then again, I suppose the reason the same traits aren’t lovable in others is usually because their boasting usually isn’t exactly on par with the genuine article. (However, in Poirot’s case, the abilities of which he brags of are by no means understated, ergo his likability.)
I thought it was overall a good read, but I don’t suppose I’d like to go through it again. I personally still prefer Holmes much more, but I can appreciate why many people love Poirot so much.

Murder, He Wrote.
“They say casting is 90 percent of directing and it was really true in this case.” Knives Out writer and director Rian Johnson tells us about the intricacies of whodunits, the joys of over-analyzing movies, and—yes—Star Wars.
From Hercule Poirot’s debut in an Agatha Christie novel in 1920, to the hard-boiled detectives of the 1930s, to the Pink Panther comedies, the whodunit was a perennially popular film genre—until its decline in the 1980s, when true-crime re-enactments took over. But, with Knives Out, writer/director Rian Johnson (Looper, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) is on a mission to reaffirm the whodunit’s rightful place on the big screen—and casually reinvent the form while he’s at it.
Knives Out has a gobsmacking ensemble, with Christopher Plummer (as writer Harlan Thrombey, the victim), Ana de Armas (as Marta, Thrombey’s nurse and confidant), Daniel Craig (as Benoit Blanc, the famous private detective who shows up to query Thrombey’s apparent suicide), and Lakeith Stanfield (as the investigating Lieutenant Elliott). Making up Thrombey’s extended, entitled family are Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, Riki Lindhome, K Callan, Katherine Langford and Jaeden Martell—all well fed by his wealth and determined to protect their piece of it.
It’s a Rian Johnson movie, so Noah Segan shows up as well, in perhaps his meatiest role yet, as a cop working with Stanfield. There’s also a delightful cameo from Frank Oz.

Despite the lack of big-screen whodunits of late, there’s no shortage of audience enthusiasm for them, as evidenced by our ‘Murder Mystery’ Showdown, a great starting point for anyone looking to delve into the genre. Letterboxd members who have already seen Knives Out are very much enjoying what they see, with the film boasting a giant 4.2 average rating (at time of writing).
This is one of those films where you can just tell how much fun the cast is having, an aspect that Letterboxd member Wes nails in his review: “I’d really, really, really like to believe that Rian Johnson gathered all these actors in this giant house, hid some cameras everywhere, hit record, and none of what we saw was fictitious.”
Demi Adejuyigbe writes—in his charming Letterboxd review of the time he lunched with Johnson (!)—that the film is “absofuckinglutely phenomenal”. He marvels at how Knives Out stays one step ahead of what we expect from a whodunit: “How do you fool an audience that has come to be fooled? Johnson is so deftly able to get that joyful, wondrous reaction out of me by expertly controlling every aspect of the script and the direction in a way that makes it clear he sees the entire process as a symphony that he’s conducting, where the audience is just another instrument being played.”
Or perhaps Patrick Willems best encapsulates the joys of the film when he writes that Knives Out is “a movie as good as its sweaters (the sweaters are excellent)”. (The most popular sweater has its own story, here.)
When we got in a room with Rian Johnson recently, we naturally wanted to learn how he juggled such an impressive ensemble whilst navigating the twists, turns, and more twists of Knives Out’s plot.
Tumblr media

You’ve often talked about your lifelong love of the whodunit genre. How did you go about making your own? Rian Johnson: It’s very interesting, the whodunit genre. It’s one of my favorite genres. I love all the things about it. I also kind of agree with Hitchcock. Hitchcock hated the whodunit genre. To Hitchcock, the danger of the whodunit is: it’s a lot of build-up for one big surprise at the end, and that’s not very satisfying or fun. That’s why he was all about suspense. He would give the audience information early and then you’re in suspense and not just crime-solving. He would also mislead the audience, so you’d think you’re getting all the information early. And enough so that you’re leaning forward, you’re not sitting back. That’s Hitchcock’s whole deal.
So for me, what was interesting is: can I put the engine of a Hitchcock thriller in the middle of a whodunit? Have a whodunit that then turns into a Hitchcock thriller that turns back into a whodunit? That was kind of the starting point for me, from a genre-wonk point of view.
So then I started filling out, okay what would that actually mean? I’m talking around it because I don’t wanna spoil anything, but, okay if we did this and then that could be interesting. And then I started zooming in bit by bit and filling out what characters I would need for what plot points. All the details come later but it’s as ‘big picture’ as that.
Tumblr media
Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer, Don Johnson and Michael Shannon in ‘Knives Out’.
Were there ever any alternative outcomes in play? Not really, because I didn’t really work, like, “if this happens, then that happens, then that happens”. I worked it like a satellite map. I zoomed back. I work in little notebooks and I have to draw one line and see the entire plot along that line. So it’s not like a game of Clue where I can pick out different solutions at the end; it’s kind of set because the shape of the whole thing determines a different kind of ending from the very inception of it.
Watching this, I thought about your film The Brothers Bloom, as that’s another ode to a somewhat specific genre—the con-artist film—in which your affection for that kind of film was also evident. How challenging is it to write and shoot films in genres you grew up loving? Any time I’m attacking a genre it’s because I deeply, deeply love it. The heart of it for me is always trying to distill the thing I love about it and set that as the goal-post and then find my own way to it. Whether it’s the con-man movie with The Brothers Bloom, or Star Wars as a genre, or this, it’s always about trying to get to the heart of what I love about something and then trying to put that on the screen so the audience will have as pure an experience of it as possible. And sometimes to give the audience the purest experience, you have to shake it a little bit, because… we’ve seen so many versions of it over the years that the audience can kind of ignore it. So sometimes you have to put it in a different context, like with Brick, with film noir or something. But the intent is always to give the audience the most sharp and vivid experience of what’s at the heart of it for me.
This film is a blockbuster of chemistry. Was it difficult to cast? Once we got Daniel on board, no. Once he was the centerpiece, I think everyone wants to work with him so it was like a snowball. Because then we got Michael Shannon, and everyone wants to work with him. And Lakeith Stanfield. So, no, the cast came together very, very quickly, just like everything else in this project. With these actors, my job is easy. They show up on set, they clicked in so easily. They’re such pros. They say casting is 90 percent of directing and it was really true in this case.
Tumblr media
Lakeith Stanfield, Noah Segan and Daniel Craig in ‘Knives Out’.
Speaking of Daniel Craig, his character is a microcosm of the film in that he is not in any way like any detective that has come before, yet you cannot help but think of precedents. Were you consciously trying to make him unlike Hercule Poirot? When I started writing, I actually kinda got myself in trouble because I was thinking too much about Poirot. I love Poirot so much and I think I was thinking too much like: how do I make my Poirot? And so I started doing all this sort of quirky stuff, and throwing all these quirks in there, like maybe he has an eye patch and a peg leg maybe. It was just silly. And so finally I said “this is so stupid”, and I pulled all that stuff and I just said: “I’m gonna write this character very straightforward. The way that he needs to be for the script. And I’m gonna give him a Southern accent, because then he’s a fish out of water in New England. And then whoever I cast, I’m gonna believe that they’re gonna inhabit that character in such a way that he’ll be unique.”
I think what Daniel found—that is exactly what is at the heart of Poirot—is Daniel found kind of what’s funny about the character. Beyond the accent. He found the self-inflated, clownish aspect of him, while still maintaining a humanity and an intelligence, which is really what Poirot is. It’s why Peter Ustinov is my favorite Poirot—he gets what’s funny about the character. And like Columbo or like Miss Marple or any of the great fictional detectives, it’s that element that makes you not quite take him seriously until it’s too late and they’ve solved the whole case. I think that’s what Daniel keyed into more than anything else.
This feels like a film that people are going to pore over the details of, as they did with Looper. I love it because that’s part of what I love about those kinds of movies. First of all, let’s separate them, because with time-travel movies, the notion that a time-travel movie can make sense is absolute nonsense. So time travel is much more like the spells in Harry Potter than science, and anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves. Except maybe Shane Carruth. Shane is the one person who can actually figure out time travel. Everyone else, it’s kind of like a fantasy element more than anything else.
Tumblr media
Ana de Armas in ‘Knives Out’.
So with Looper, I felt like I had to have it make narrative sense, but I didn’t feel the pressure of it having to work in every little detail, because it can’t. Whereas, it’s a little different with a whodunit because every screw has to be tightened and I can’t leave any loose ends. I do want people to be able to re-watch and dig in. But I’ll be a little more sad if they find things that don’t make sense. I’m sure they will, but it’ll actually make me a little sad if they do, because I’ll be like: “I messed up there”.
How do you feel about your films being subjected to that kind of scrutiny? I think it’s fun! That’s the thing: for a certain kind of moviegoer, that’s the pleasure you get—it’s almost like the kid who if you hand them a radio, you’re gonna wanna take it apart. If that’s what someone loves about watching a movie then I think that’s fantastic. I’ve done that with certain films. I’ve watched them over and over and tried to analyze, so I get [that] that’s part of the pleasure of it.
How are you feeling about your Star Wars experience? As a filmmaker, as a Star Wars lover, it was the best experience of my life. Everything about it. Writing it. Making it. The people I got to meet. The places I got to go. The experience I had putting it out. The last two years interacting with the fans has been so rewarding and so fantastic.
I feel like I always have to say that the bad part of that gets written about a lot because it’s interesting to write about. From being in the middle of the hurricane, I can tell you that 95 percent of my interactions with fans are absolutely lovely. That’s not to say they all even like the movie—some of them don’t, or some of them have issues with the film—but they’re all engaged and respectful and so deeply engaged in it in a way that when you make movies you only dream that people will engage with something that you made on that level. So no, for me, the whole thing top-to-bottom has been the most beautiful experience I can possibly imagine.
Tumblr media
Rian Johnson directs Joonas Suotamo on the set of ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’.
Something that I know in my bones from being a Star Wars fan since I was five years old: everybody has a slightly different version of what Star Wars is to them, absolutely. That’s why I’m excited that stuff like [new Disney+ series] The Mandalorian can exist. The more Star Wars stuff we make, the more there’s gonna be a spectrum that gives different people the things that they want. But we also have to recognize that nothing is gonna give everybody what they want, and somebody is always gonna be upset.
What George Lucas did originally was make a movie that was straight from his heart, and expressed exactly what this world was to him. And expressed emotional truths in this world in a way that was resonant for him personally. I feel that every filmmaker who comes to Star Wars, that’s their job. Their job is not to take a survey and to see what is going to have the broadest demographic appeal. Their job is to speak from their heart and make a thing that resonates with what Star Wars is for them. And I think the more diverse filmmakers we have doing that, the more diverse Star Wars movies we’ll have, the more people will hopefully be happy and the less yelling there’ll be all around.
‘Knives Out’ is now in theaters. Comments have been edited for clarity and length. With thanks to Studiocanal.

my top five (+1) favourite actresses
how is it that I’ve posted so many things before, but never actually a top five of my favourite actresses? due to that, here is this wonderful list that no one did ask for. it’s my pleasure to do it anyway:
Helena Bonham-Carter
Tumblr media
I knoooow Bellatrix Lestrange is a horrible character but damn, it’s Helena. She’s great, awesome, outstanding, I love her. Like, Marla Singer made me literally want to marry this woman. Those are facts. Also, be it as it may, but she was freaking awesome in Les Mis. Don’t argue with me. It’s pointless.
Michelle Williams
Tumblr media
Could anyone ever be cuter? Basically no, not in my opinion. Michelle is a great actress as well as a great singer. She’s literally perfect.
Keira Knightley
Tumblr media
Pirates of the Carribean, Atonement, The Imitation Game, Pride and Prejudice, Love Actually, I grew up with her movies and I grew to be attached to this woman. She’s just wonderful in my opinion.
Judi Dench
Tumblr media
Her royal highness Mrs. Judi Dench, I adore her. She’s so funny and absolutely cute. That’s it. The best exotic Marigold Hotel made me love her (I still ship her with Bill Nighy and I’ll probably never stop)
Maggie Smith
Tumblr media
Growing up as a kid who absolutely obsessed over the Harry Potter movies, and also having a mother who did the same with Hercule Poirot movies, Maggie Smith was someone who had been always around. She seems like the sweetest Lady to me. Also she was in Hook and I loooove this movie.
 - - -Also, Zendaya  has a very special place in my heart and therefore should be mentioned here too.

So, I watched Murder on the Orient Express yesterday
... and I want to ramble about it a bit. I’ll try to keep this as spoiler free as possible, but I can’t promise anything. So for safety’s sake: SPOILERS!!!!
First thing first, there’s two things you have to know about me: 1) I grew up watching David Suchet as Poirot, so I’m biased as hell. 2) I’m NOT a purist. I understand that every adaptations differ from a) the source material and b) the previous adaptations and I think it’s a source of great fun. After all, there’s no two readers who would interpret the same book in the exact same way. That said, there’s usually a line that shouldn’t be crossed.
I had mixed feelings about this movie from the very start. On the one hand I was excited because “yay, more Agatha Christie for me!”, on the other hand the trailers made me worried that they would turn it into an action movie-ish film. Fortunately this wasn’t the case, but the mixed feelings stayed - even after watching the movie.
I’m not an expert, so correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Murder on the Orient Express was very well shot. The cinematography was beautiful and the scenery was breathtaking. The movie sometimes felt a bit erratic and needlessly fast-paced, especially when Poirot started to interview the suspects - but maybe I’m just used to the slower speed of the Suchet-films.
They should have taken more time to familiarize us with the characters. If I haven’t already known the story I would have become very confused very soon on who’s who. I get that MOE is one of the most famous stories of Agatha Christie, but maybe Branagh should have chosen one with fewer characters as an introduction of this new version of Poirot. 114 minutes simply isn’t enough to introduce Hercule Poirot and another 14 characters (12 suspects+Bouc+ Ratchett ) and have an investigation.
That said, despite the unfinished feel of the characters, the actors did a very-very good job and I enjoyed their performance very much.
On to Poirot himself. Oh boy...
If we can believe this article Kenneth Branagh took the preparation for the role very seriously. Allegedly, “he gathered all written descriptions of Poirot’s moustaches by Agatha Christie and began a 9-month process of research“. Well, I still have to laugh every time I see the resulting moustache, but during the movie I found myself growing attahed to it. Just for the hell of it.
As a non-native English speaker, I honestly can’t tell whether Branagh’s French accent sounds genuine or not. It seemed real to me, but what do I know!
The thing is, I can’t say that Branagh’s Poirot isn’t AC’s Poirot because that would be unfair. He certainly doesn’t look like Poirot (too tall, too thin, too much hair). But he feels like Poirot. Mostly. He took his time to show us Poirot’s little quirks and OCD-like tendencies, of course in a much higher dose and with less subtlety than David Suchet. Then again, Suchet had dozens of episodes to convey the original Hercule Poirot Feeling, while Branagh only had this one film, so...
When I say that Branagh mostly feels like Poirot I mean that other times he feels like a strange mix of the 3 different Sherlcok Holmeses. 1) His calm deductions reminded me of the classic/Granada Holmes. 2) That one action scene (and what the hell was that?) and the creative uses of his cane came right out of the RDJ movies. 3) Finally, his brash mannerism and his crudeness channeled Sherlock from the BBC series. I mean, can you imagine Hercule Poirot saying things like “I won’t help you because I don’t like your face”????
He also yelled a lot
And what the heck was that shit with Poirot’s lost love? Was it really neccessary to hint at a tragic love story completely irrelevant to the plot and then never even explain it? Poirot’s an even more asexual character than Sherlock Holmes and it’s a typical Hollywoodish mentality that the protagonist has to have a love interest. WHY??? (And this is where the movie crossed that line I mentioned above)
So all in all this movie wasn’t awful. It wasn’t exactly my cup of tea, but I also can’t say that I didn’t enjoy it. Yes, sometimes it frustrated me and yes, sometimes it made me angry, but it still didn’t reach the level of what-the-fuckery of Sherlock season 4 and I really appreciate that. People who know nothing or very little of Poirot and like a good detective movie will certainly like it. And there’s also the hope that this newest version of Murder on the Orient Express will introduce Agatha Christie to those who have never read her.

The Good Inside Me
by Barbara Russell
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
Dragons, short-tempered archdemons, and hysterical damned souls—Shax is used to dealing with all that. He’s a young fire demon and lives in Hell, after all. What he’s not used to is being possessed by a human. A very good human and a pretty girl at that: sixteen-year-old Tolis. Despite still having control of his body most of the time, Shax can hear Tolis’s voice inside his head and feels what she feels constantly.
Shax’s mentor claims that Tolis hides an ancient, powerful grimoire, a book of spells, and proposes a deal: if Shax finds it, he’ll help Shax get work as a dragon keeper—Shax’s dream job. Tolis swears she doesn’t have the grimoire and asks Shax to help her father, whose soul is turning evil by the minute. Unless Tolis does something, her dad’s soul will end in Hell. Hoping to convince her to give him the grimoire, and not because Shax cares about the man’s soul, he agrees to help.
Goodness is overrated. Since Shax decided to help Tolis, his life has turned into a hurdle race. Thugs chase him, the scientists in Hell want to prod and examine the first possessed demon in history, and he can’t find the darn grimoire.
And the worst part? Due to the unavoidable presence of Tolis, who keeps intruding into his evil thoughts, Shax discovers an almost decent side of himself. In no time at all, he catches himself doing actual good deeds. Is he becoming—yuck—good?

Chapter One
NOT MANY THINGS scared Shax. He was a fire demon, lived in Hell, and dealt with dragons and other infernal beasts every day. Attempts to stab and roast him were pretty much a part of his daily routine. Not to mention his short-tempered archdemon mentor, who threatened him with disembowelment at least ten times in an hour. Yet, being trapped in the limbo between Earth and Hell, the nowhere space that had no entrance or exit, made him want to throw up out of fear. When he’d dematerialized from Hell to reach Earth, he hadn’t focused on his destination.  He’d landed in the middle of the corridor of St. Cecil High School in Auckland, as he was supposed to, but had ended up sandwiched between the infernal portal and the human one. Again. Whoever said ending up in limbo was a rare thing had never dematerialized with Shax.
Blurred figures brushed past the limbo’s walls, and muffled sounds echoed around him. Pushing at the opaque walls that caged him was useless. Screaming didn’t solve anything, and even tossing one of his mighty demonic blazes wouldn’t do any good. The metaphysical cage was fireproof. Besides, he’d tried demonic fire before and only gotten burned. But this didn’t mean he was a hopeless demon, as many said back in Hell. Anyone could’ve made this mistake.
He leaned against the cold barrier and counted the stains of mud on his sneakers. Not much to do but wait for Astharot, his mentor, to rescue him. As only a fifth-level fire demon, Shax needed an expert’s help to jump in and out of limbo.
A tall dark figure approached the wall, and Shax waved a hand. “I’m here!”
He wiped his sweaty hands on his jeans. Great Sathael, not even Hades Park with its roaming werewolves was so creepy. These icy walls, the distant sounds, the fuzzy silhouettes…it all seemed as if he were trapped in a fishbowl.
The dark figure lifted an arm and hit the barrier. A crack appeared, letting in a draft of fresh air. The fist struck again until the fractures expanded like cobwebs. The wall shattered, exploding into thousands of glassy pieces. Shax fell over, dropping onto a blue vinyl floor. He moaned, massaging his back.
Astharot loomed over him. His lips curled to bare his teeth in a threatening smirk—as if being a massive archdemon, almost eight feet tall and dressed in black leather from head to toe, wasn’t menacing enough.
“What were you doing in there?” Astharot pulled Shax to his feet.
Shax adjusted his red hoodie. “I miscalculated the dematerialization.”
“Miscalculated?” Astharot scowled at him. “Your lack of focus will cost you a few points on your final score.”
“What?”
“Complain and I’ll have you weed dragonwort from my garden.”
“Again? I did it last week.” Shax flexed his fingers, which were still throbbing from the spiky dragonwort’s bites.
“It has regrown.” Astharot grabbed his arm. “We’d better hurry. Our divine colleagues are already here.”
Shax shrugged himself free and dodged a teacher striding past. A long corridor, lined with yellow lockers on both sides, stretched in front of him. Kids wearing blue and green uniforms milled around, bags strapped to their shoulders. Girls with colorful rucksacks covered in freakish rainbows, ugly unicorns, and hideous flowers filed in. Goodness wafted from them like the scents of their flowery perfumes, causing his stomach to roll. A guy ran through Shax as if he were a ghost, and Shax shouted. No point in keeping his voice low. None of these humans could see, hear, or touch him unless he revealed himself.
The students’ chatter and click-clack of lockers being closed and opened echoed off the walls. At the end of the hallway, in a quiet corner, two men stood, dressed in blinding white suits. The shorter one, Jilhael, fussed with his snowy cravat and pulled back his long blond hair.
Shax waved at his friend. Looking at Jilhael’s sapphire eyes and sensing the goodness in him, no one would ever guess he was half fire demon, half air angel. Jilhael’s mentor, Nithael, surveyed the crowd of kids with his sharp gaze, like a German shepherd watching a flock of sheep, his ebony skin a stark contrast with his white suit. Shax squinted at the circle of blue light on the floor; it marked one of the celestial portals that led to Heaven.
Astharot and Nithael exchanged a curt nod.
Shax playfully shoved Jilhael. “Hey, Jay, ready?”
Jilhael loosened his shirt’s collar. “You were right. This white suit is a tad uncomfortable.”
“Told ya.” Shax tugged at his hoodie and twitched his nose. His clothes smelled of sulfur and French fries. “Hell: less rules, more fun.”
Jilhael raised a golden brow. “This is work. It’s not supposed to be fun.”
Astharot toyed with his dagger—the athame—scrutinizing the oblivious human kids. “Have you already chosen Jilhael’s subject? Who should Jilhael possess?”
Nithael straightened and golden sparks flew about him. They fell on two girls passing by, who laughed. “Sure.” He flourished a hand. A white book appeared in his palm, and he skimmed the pages. “Jilhael has already possessed three young humans with excellent results, despite his lack of control.” He gave Jilhael a piercing look.
Astharot snorted, but Nithael ignored him.
“Jilhael’s subject today will be…Chad McKee, sixteen, prone to anger and envy. He harassed a few girls in the past weeks, and he’s that boy over there.” Nithael pointed to a broad guy with short brown hair and hazel eyes, standing in front of an open locker. A large duffel bag dangled from his shoulder.
Shax poked Jilhael in the ribs. “Looks like a tough guy. I don’t envy you.”
“No pun intended, right?” Jilhael chuckled.
“What about Shax?” Nithael closed the book and made it disappear with a casual gesture.
Astharot scratched his unshaven chin with his blade. “Don’t know…not sure yet….”
“I need to know who Shax is going to possess, Astharot.” Nithael’s hands twitched. “It’s our right to have the chance to repair the damage you and your apprentice are going to—”
“Shut up. I’m no rookie. Let me think,” Astharot scoffed.
“You promised to be ready this time,” Nithael hissed, blue sparks shooting from his body.
Shax stifled a chuckle. Had Nithael believed Astharot would be ready?
“Don’t get your wings in a knot.” Astharot held out a hand. “Give me a minute, and I’ll find Shax’s next target.”
Jilhael leaned closer to Shax. “What creature is next on your list? Or are you still working with objects?”
“I’ve finished with appliances.” Shax gestured to a fly zooming by. “An insect? Or a small animal maybe.” He rubbed his hands. “This is the first time I’ll possess a living thing. I can’t wait.”
“It’s a lot of work.” Jilhael brushed his white jacket. “But I love searching for the good inside a living being and helping it grow.”
“There!” Astharot pointed his athame toward Chad’s left.
Shax squinted. A huge black spider crawled on top of the lockers, but Chad and a pretty blonde girl next to him ignored it.
A spider. Cool. Being a spider for a few days would have to be fun.
The girl shifted sideways, her pink lips and rosy skin, her long wavy hair— Nope. He had to focus. On the spider. Astharot mumbled something Shax didn’t catch—probably the usual list of dos and don’ts.  As if he didn’t know that taking a life was a big no-no. Inside a spider, he could scare girls, build cobwebs, sneak into the girls’ changing room. Finally, Astharot had given him an awesome test.

I’m an entomologist and a soil biologist, which is a fancy way to say that I dig in the dirt, looking for bugs. Nature and books have always been my passion. I was a kid when I read The Lord Of The Ring and fell in love with fantasy novels.
When I discovered cozy mystery and crime novels, I fell in love with Hercules Poirot and Sherlock Holmes. Then I grew up and . . . Nah, I’m joking. I didn’t grow up. Don’t grow up, folks! It’s a trap.
PS I hate gardening. There, I said it. Sorry fellow Kiwis.
