welcome to the mini series of the random, mindless thoughts had by a poet disguised in an orange jumpsuit watching cars speed by all weekend. enjoy!
--- note: 5am starts, 7pm finishes. all four days. gotta love formula 1!
thursday: media day!
i want the ferrari jacket
there are school kids here?
i don’t want the ferrari jacket
$7 for a small can of red bull is THEFT
especially since they broke the cost cap
me walking through the “accredited personnel” gate and tapping my special lanyard is a CORE memory
i think my uber driver dropped me off on the opposite side of the track
*stressing about being unable to admire the sights of albert park bc i’m stress-running from the opposite end of the track to my station*
pls don’t be a dick and say i’m late - i know
how is a 5am wake up not early enough HOW?
“last year i was stationed at the corner where charles spun out.”
sole thought = 💀💀💀💀
i. fucking. love. cars.
the whole SENSORY experience of a race ffffffffffffuuuuuck
“be careful taking pictures because that security camera is on us and is straight to race control and the FIA.” is such a cool sentence to hear
a porsche gtr should not be covered with branding idc
i’m definitely going to abuse caffeine this weekend
Tumblr media
friday: FP1 / FP2
the sun is rising over the lake as i walk on the albert park track and i’m happy to be alive
especially as i found a toilet that isn’t a port-a-loo
ah, a cafe that does good decent coffee thank GOD
am i going to pay $10 for a croissant?
i'm going to pay $10 for a croissant.
i lived in paris but this one fresh lune choc croissant has topped it all
no like there will never be another croissant experience to beat me eating a fresh pain au chocolat on a f1 circuit as the sun rises over the water with the melbourne skyline in the background
aramco engineers are walking behind me as i shit talk about f1, nice
“it is an increasingly unique experience peeing in a port-a-loo beside a formula one track as cars race by.”
120’000 is a LOT of people
how has the float not broken yet?
metro boomin has released an album as i stand before live formula one. life has PEAKED
fernando alonso is the first F1 driver i ever saw live
there is a shift in formula one as the heritage fans of motor racing are on the out as the next generation of fans absorbed in driver hype and social media takes over and we see this in how F1 has created the new US tracks and made them all into spectacles and fans are here because of it being “cool” instead of caring about cars
… maybe i should buy the redbull jacket instead?
bonus: sole thought during the pitlane walk for the marshals
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
saturday: FP3 / qualifying
the relief of thinking you’re late and then seeing someone you know HA
commentators are now contractually obligated to bring up saudi arabia every time they talk about ollie bearman
jesus they’re as bad as the f1 girlies
i have to watch the grand prix replay after all of this i have no idea what’s actually going on
CHARLES GOES FASTER THAN MAX HA
kimi spinning out has me actively wanting to cry
a safety car FROM THE PIT EXIT
welcome to F2 everyone 👏👏👏
not me lying to the cute irish guy hitting on me about @saintescuderia
a big fat ha at the eshays holding their puffer jackets - even they can’t stand the heat
don’t flex on me that you’re here at F1 when you don’t even know what’s going on yourself bruhhhh
to the red bull fan telling me i’m “dramatic” for rolling under the fence (it’s how marshals have to do it) pls get help
$7 for a calispo is a JOKE
recording F1 quali isn’t even worth it bc they're TOO FAST
JOKES I GOT A PHOTO WITH ALBONO
i’m very lucky for my team of marshals :))))))))))
i’m only going to eat half my muffin
*finishes the whole thing*
Tumblr media
sunday: race!
KIMI ANTONELLI!
do i ask for a photo?
*every photo of charles leclerc being abused flashes through my mind*
nah leave him be
five minutes later: i regret not asking him
the group of aussies dressed as lance stroll drunk at 9am have my heart and my respect
i need a coffee
seeing kimi walk right by me has now made so much invested for f2
i really need a coffee
yep they screwed kimi with all those safety cars
i really, really need a coffee
we get to go ON TRACK? for the DRIVERS PARADE
*starts practicing “get well soon” in spanish*
my heart is BEATING
lol jokes carlos didn’t even look at us
*checks footage to see that i accidentally just recorded guanyu zhou next to carlos the whole time :))))*
lol are they putting lewis and charles together all the time?
every marshal: “that was the shittest parade ever.”
i need a drink
pls don’t talk to me for the next two hours
don't meet your heroes kids
but also why the fuck did they do the float in one big car? and do INTERVIEWS? this is legit the one time the drivers can be there JUST for the FANS
F1 can PISS OFF
race start = okay it's happening
waitwaitwaitwaitWAITDIDIJUSTSEECARLOSOVERTAKEMAX?!
nevermind i love him
"race control has asked that you calm down, marshals are supposed to be neutral."
lol at the entirety of albert cheering that max is slowly coming to a DNF
mclaren swapping oscar for lando is DISGUSTING fuck zak brown
somehow, i've forgotten that charles is just there
SEND IT CARLOS VAmos
(this is all because i told you que te mejores pronto!)
daniel ricciardo....man..... aus gp can't market you like this.......
damn yuki got HANDS
ferrari and mclaren having the top 4 places is just *chefs kiss*
lewis just had to stall just pass my sector like i hope ur okay but couldn't u not be ok in front of me?
red bull deserves this after all the FLACK i've copped from red bulls fans ("dramatic" MY ASS)
wait george russell ARE YOU SERIOUS?!
singapore all over again. i can already see the memes.
somehow marshalling a gp has you closer and more removed from the whole thing i have no idea what's going on
(literally the only time i used my F1TV live timing)
finishing after the safety car means i can't stick my head out and clap for carlos FUCK OFF
wait, he came up right UP TO MY SIDE OF THE TRACK TO WAVE
... do you think he noticed me?

Okay I need to know things from literally ALL of the wip’s 😂
But I guess the ones that intrigue me the most are the post AUS2024 fic, the alternate Vegas 2023 story and the lmao daniel retirement fic!!
But like I said, I want to know all things lol! You are like one of my favourite authors ❤️
P.S. please feel no pressure to update, write or anything. Take your time
beth you ask and i will dutifully answer, gonna put everything under the cut because this is a long post 🫡
snippets: ausgp 2024/you're on another path
so fun fact about this one i wrote it post quali, and i had planned to post it after the race was done so i a "pre-wrote" two endings. i wasn't going to because i was gonna be like "oh max will win but something bad might happen to daniel" so i had this ready to go:
Tumblr media
and i was sitting in the grandstand watching max's car explode in the pitlane and all i could think about was "did i do this. again" and honestly who knows.
Daniel’s already lying down face first on the bed when Max makes it back to their hotel room. He’s been doing it a lot recently after races, opening the door to their hotel room and just starfishing on the bed, unmoving until Max gently coaxes him to actually sleep.
God, if his twenty-something year old self could see him now.
Yeah, you’re back at the team you started with—no not HRT, that’s gone now, yes the Red Bull—not junior—sister team. The Red Bull seat? Yeah, not yours anymore, and it’s looking like it’s gonna stay that way. No, no podium at your home race, more like qualifying P18 because you were an idiot and drove over track limits. Points? Well, you had a good chance but I guess luck just wasn’t on your side yet again.
Oh, and that young and upcoming driver from the Netherlands? Yeah, he’s your boyfriend now—surprise, you’re gay! And he’s a three time world champion, but that’s probably not important.
Any one of those things would’ve sent Daniel into hospital, but all of those things combined?
Early death.
snippets: las vegas 2025/bonus fic reimagined
(i'm going to assume you mean las vegas 2025 and i'll give you both)
Max isn’t winning right now.
He couldn’t really tell you why.
Plenty of pundits, fans, strangers on the street have stopped him and asked him to dissect why he hasn’t won a championship in the past two years. He gives them a hastily PR trained and approved answer that seems to be more conscious in his mind now than before and cracks a well timed joke he’s sure his teammate would be proud of.
Then Daniel comes along and will say, “Max already has three, he’s got to leave some for the rest of us!”, and the conversation will usually move on quickly after that.
He knows that Daniel isn’t the sole reason for his non-winning ways right now, but when the eventual news of their relationship happens to drop, there’ll be dissections for days on if Daniel plays a part in Max’s performance right now.
The last time Max hadn’t won a championship was when Daniel Ricciardo was with Red Bull, surely there’s some connection there?

...
I may have accidentally
I swear it was an accident
Like I pinky promise swear to our first born child
Don’t bring Matilda into this
Did you murder someone
What
Why is that your first thing
You are making a big deal out of it
Like bigger than the podcast you did in January
So I have to assume you murdered someone
Okay well it’s not murder but nice to know you think I’m capable of it
Daniel
I forgot to take off my wedding ring and wore it in the paddock and people saw and I got asked about in the press conference
They definitely thought I was just engaged so I guess that’s just a silver lining
And you have a bet with Lando over when I was going to accidentally do this
Which is rude because I would never do the same to you Maxy
You literally have a bet with Fernando over if I’m going to slip up and say husband in an interview
How do you know that
And he’s Fernando you know you can’t say no to him
Daniel
When you came out you literally posted a photo of me on your Instagram
The whole paddock knows we are married
Half of them went to our wedding
About 85% of fans think we are in a relationship because you keep on teasing them with photos that is definitely me
Is it so bad that we just say yeah we’re married
We are literally about to have a kid
Okay well when you put it like that
I guess you’re right
I know
I’m always right
snippets: lmao daniel retirement
They asked him if he wanted a big farewell thing, like they had done with Sebastian and Kimi a couple years back.
He’d almost said no until Lando pulled a face and said “Mate, people’s last memory of you driving can’t be you heading to the pitlane again.”
So he agreed. Told Blake to tell them to keep it minimal. No standing on giant mockups of his face during the national anthem or whatever.

🎤 Lando at the post-qualifying press conference in Suzuka:
(I'm very sorry for the delay in posting. The video is from F1Fever on YouTube)
Transcript:
Interviewer: Lando, coming to you now. Best of the rest today, just two tenths shy of pole. Did you expect to be that close coming into the session?
Lando: Closer, but probably not as close as we were today. It was close between many people, you know, us, Mercedes, Aston, Ferrari. They didn't seem to have quite the advantage as the last few weekends. So between eight cars, we knew it was going to be tricky. So to come out on top, behind the fastest two, I think is a good job by us, so I'm happy.
It was tricky to put in the good laps, but my two Q3 laps I was the happiest with, which is always a good bonus. And two tenths is not far away. I think if we kind of look back to where we were last year we were even further away, I think five tenths off of pole. And this is the first track we've come back to, which is where we had our upgrades last season. So I think it's our best comparison of how we've improved over the winter and we're quite a bit closer. So I think that's a very good sign.
Interviewer: You're quite a bit closer compared to the opening three races as well. Is that track specific or have you found something on the car this weekend?
Lando: The car's exactly the same.
Interviewer: What about the race then? What can you do about the two guys sat next to you?
Lando: I don't know, there's not a lot to do. You know, first lap, try and get a good start. Obviously last year I was side by side with Max into Turn 1. So hopefully trying to redo that. But it's tricky. They're quick. They complained about their race pace, but I don't think they've had a bad race in the last, four or five years, so I think they're going to be good tomorrow. Of course we've got a lot of pressure from behind so we have to keep an eye on the mirrors. But at the same time I want to go forward and I think we have pace to stay where we are, so that's my goal.
Interviewer: What about going forward though? Do you think this is your best chance in recent memory of at least beating one of them?
Lando: I'll say yes. It's so tricky. Sergio's doing a good job, so that's one much harder car to kind of keep up with. But we proved last year when we were further away from them that we could keep in touch and not be miles behind. So that will be our target for tomorrow.
But I think realistically, we're still too far away to challenge them. They're too quick for us. Yes, we are quicker in quali, but in the race, normally, they always pull away a bit more. So, I think we'll be realistic. I'm always realistic when I say it. So I think our competition's with the guys behind. And at the same time, I'll do my best to push forward.
Journalist Questions:
Q1 (Alex Kalinauckas – Autosport): A question to Lando, please. You said that the two laps in Q3 were your happiest of the session, but could you just explain the difference between the two, between Run 1 and Run 2? Thanks.
Lando: Kind of like they both said, Sergio and Max, as soon as you push that little bit more, you pay the price just that little bit. And it's such a fine line between over-pushing and under-pushing. So I was very happy with my first lap that I did, so Q2, Run 1. So I was happy to try a few more things to try and unlock something more. It was still a good lap. It was, what, eight hundredths or something off my first.
But just a couple little bits, mainly Sector 1, where I just try and push that little bit more. But as soon as I pushed that little bit more, I just lost the front tyres a bit. And so easy to go over the limit. So apart from that, I gained in some other corners. Clearly not enough to kind of make a two-tenth jump or something that I really needed. So, yeah, they're just both good laps, both pretty similar. Just one was better than the other.
Q2 (Luke Smith – The Athletic): The slightly cooler conditions compared to when we normally come here in September of each year. How has that changed things for you guys? Is it more favorable? How does that change your approach in the car?
Lando: I don't have much to add. It looks nicer, yes. I think it helps us a bit more, honestly. Our performance is better, so I'll take it. I wouldn't mind a bit of sun on my face. Checo is nice and tanned, and I've lost mine a little bit (smiles). I think it's helped us, so I would say it's better this way.

I swear the drivers switch off their brains when they’re talking to press after a bad race (the same thing happened with Charles last weekend with the quali mess)
Carlos has already said multiple times that
1. He’s always playing the team game (maybe in the last two races, otherwise I wouldn’t really say so)
2. “He was a lot faster than Charles and the outcome of the race would have been different if they let him trough”. First of all I hope he’s not as delusional as to believe he’d have caught Max… also, it has already been said multiple times that the driver behind, with drs, had a huge advantage compared to the one in front.
Lando, who was about 0.5 seconds slower compared to Carlos, managed to keep the drs behind him for 5-6 laps. That’s how strong the drs was.
Carlos and Charles probably had very similar paces (there were moment were Charles was faster, like the last stint, and moments where Carlos was faster). The only thing that would have changed were their final positions: Carlos would have probably got second place and Charles would have been caught in the pit stop mess (maybe without the 5 sec penalty he could have kept the podium)
3. “He went over track limits to make up for the time lost with the pit stop”. The deleted lap times are available to everyone… his track limits are all condensed in the laps before the safety car…
He was pushing to the absolute limit to prove he was faster than Charles and got over the lines a few times.
4. This isn’t something Carlos said, but it’s something I’ve heard quite a lot. “His defence against Checo is the only reason why Charles got second place”.
Again, just look at lap times. Was Carlos defence really good? Yep, he drove incredibly well, both overtaking and defending.
Was Checo ever going to overtake Charles? He would have certainly got closer, but in the end Checo wasn’t faster than Charles if you look at their lap times
Carlos had an amazing race. He was simply unlucky. The strategy wasn’t bad itself, they messed it up with the pit stops. His race wasn’t ruined by the team not letting him overtake Charles, it was damaged by the wheel gun not working and then his own mistakes with the track limits penalty.
His driving was really good today, that’s what he should focus on. Not the team favouring Charles, ‘cause if you look at last year that hasn’t really happened (Fred is smarter though, so I’m hoping he will protect Charles more 😅)

Comparing drivers personalities and implying that Charles is at fault for not succeeding like l Max is not normal and that’s what y’all are doing and that’s what I’m pointing out btw. // Nobody compared their personalities anon. OP was talking about how Charles is prioritising fame over his F1 achievements. That has nothing to do with personalities, and it would be Charles' fault tbh. /
How is he prioritizing fame over f1 achievements ??? Are you aware max drives a very superior car compared to charles?
Or are you one of those people that think charles is washed because he had one bad quali after getting 7 front rows?
I'll try to add a little more nuance. I think Charles is also preparing his post-F1 career with this marketing turnaround. That's not to say that he doesn't prioritize F1. It's just that he's trying to combine the two more strongly this year, and that can be felt by a lot of fans. That doesn't make fans bad fans.
We give opinions without insulting anyone. You have every right to disagree, and happily so. It's just that it's also important to take into consideration the questioning, with the way fans talk. Let the community stop boiling down to butterflies, rainbows and fan art.
For many people, I don't think you're 12 years old, being an adult and a fan means knowing how to listen to and debate a sport, a driver and the choices he makes, without getting bogged down. I understand that for fans, it's hard to read certain asks and we'll react with anger and frustration. It's human, we all are. Charles is human too. It's nice to learn to listen to opinions, even unpopular ones, and to try to change things a little guys.
When I said "real fans" yesterday, I don't know if it sounds different in English. But in French it's an everyday expression, to say "he's a real fan like me and he's not interested in gossips". It wasn't me, I'm not anymore, so look at what even this real fan is saying. It was like community mode. Sorry, it must have been a mistake to speak in my mother tongue.
We're not taking anything away from Charles' talent, he's making incredible times and positions with a team and an engineer 💀. We're just saying, maybe if Charles totally embraced his little dark side, to quote this youtuber 😂, it could maybe shake up the team and the system a bit. If you need I can make an all essay about Charles and his talent, my attitude fan and all. No problem.

It’s not a great year for Charles but mostly not because of his skills. He does great during races, it’s his car that is not there (dirty air)
When he can put the car upfront he manages a podium (when a wire does not give up and it ends up in a dnf the a grid penalty)
It’s easy to look at results and say he doesn’t drive well but data is there. The only thing he was bad in was mixed conditions (with that car because the lasts years he was great) and we’ve seen in silverstone he overcame that. Even silverstone he was great but strategy was bad and he had no FP2 (which caused the shitty strategy from Ferrari as they only had Carlos data where he destroyed his tyres… so no proper data).
I think the media and Twitter saying he is only good on one lap is getting to some people heads sometimes. But we have to look at the bigger picture.
The car, strategy. And of course the few times he pushed too hard when then car was not pole or podium worthy.
I just hope things can click with Ferrari really soon because his talent is wasted right now.
Well, there is no denying Charles is in another league as far as Qualifying goes:
Tumblr media
Source: Wikipedia
A lone non-WDC amongst champions there. Twice!
And this year, with the Red Bull absolutely dominant on every track, there has only been 1 driver who does not drive for Red Bull, who has been able to put it on pole. Twice (1 GP, 1 Sprint).
I think everyone then expects amazing things from Charles during the race, because he is able to just put these incredible laps together in Quali. He doesn't get pole because of a unexpected rain or a crash red-flagging the session, or some other lucky break. He gets pole because he is able to pull the absolute maximum out of the car over that one lap.
Unfortunately our car cannot do this over the length of an entire race. And it's easy to then put the blame on the driver, but as you pointed out, and I have already discussed on here before, there are a lot of other factors at play.
All in all, I feel like a lot of journalists, and fans alike, want more for Charles, because they see how talented he is. Peter Windsor said in his podcast, "Charles does have Max's raw talent. He's got tremendous compactness about his driving. He is very good under pressure, because he's a very good short corner driver who can think in systematic ways." And so it's frustrating not to see more race success come his way. Charles is not alone in this though. Drivers like Alex, Lando, George, even Lewis we saw last year, can often only be as good as their cars allow them to be.

I'm here to rant about that why THIS Sainz win is undeserved. Have never expected things turning this way.
Did not only he show some impressing things (thanks god he could won the restart), but also he didn't show ANYTHING during the race. People said about Leclerc crying about team orders (when he just didn't want to mess the team with passing Carlos without asking permission), but I saw 0 mentions of Carlos crying "I'm under pressure", "If Charles gives me DRS" or "Ham and Per will eat me if I try to defend". Oh really?
But OK, lets leave that race and talks about podiums:
2021:
Monaco: Leclerc out from pole, and Bottas screwed by the wheel of the car. Sainz on podium
Hungary: Leclerc bombed by Stroll, Bottas, Leclerc, Perez - out, Verstappen - damaged. Vettel disqualified from P2. Sainz on podium when he crashed in the quali.
Sochi - Norris fucked up, Ferrari couldn't do double pit - Leclerc's race fucked up (wow they started back then) - Sainz on podium (this race was actually great from Carlos)
Abu-Dhabi: Perez out, Sainz on podium.
2022:
Bahrain: Max and Peres out due to reliability, But Carlos had a good race end on podium
Saudi: Perez race fucked, Carlos on podium
Monaco: Charles was fucked, Verstappen had a bad weekend, Carlos on podium
Canada: Perez and Leclerc not in the race for podium, first (well maybe second in we count Sochi) real fight on track and he couldn't overtake Max.
Am I inventing or it seem like Carlos rn isn't ready to fight wheel-to-wheel?
Hiya! sorry that it took me so long to reply but this deserved a proper answer!
Yeah, the "crying" only matters when it's the faster one doing it. Because "if you are so much faster just overtake" as if there's not loads of other things to keep in mind!
He has definitely been benefitting a lot from things going wrong for others. For last year I think that that is ok overall because that car was meh.
BUT hungary still annoys me because people will talk about how Charles fucked it himself with the crash in Monaco as if the team couldn't have changed the driveshaft without a penalty had they just checked it. No other driver crashed in Qualifying and then can't start. and in Hungary Carlos bins it and they do fix his car and then Charles got screwed as well. I hate all of these events.
And Sochi also annoys me because Charles was fucked because he was TOO FAST. Man starts at the back with the engine pen and is so fast that he catches is teammate who started P2 and then actually overtakes him. But then can't pit because when they decided to pit Carlos was still in front. And then he gambles completely. But like he was so fast he caught his team mate that started P2 while he started pretty much last. Honestly had Charles finished ahead of Carlos he might not have survived that.
2022
Bahrain, he was on for third and I think that was fine but P2 was gifted.
Saudi, yeah. Also I still can't believe that he didn't manage to make up some time while the leading two were playing DRS chicken. like he didn't even make a dent into the gap and those two were slowing down more than they normally would've.
Monaco, if I speak
Canada I would say was his best race so far. He did benefit from both Charles and Perez not being there but he did somewhat manage to keep pace with Max. But yeah idk under how much presser Max felt he was because it felt like Carlos always wanted to just get a bit closer before trying anything.
TBH I have zero knowledge of Carlos wheel to wheel skills. I just never really paid that much attention to him. But he is definitely a step below the top. Even Perez is better defensively and has shown more aggression lately. Carlos did squeeze Max on the restart in Silverston but I feel like he only did it because he had a preview and knew what was going to happen.
I also feel like maybe he enjoys it less than Charles and let's add Max because those two love it. But maybe I am being mean but I just have never heard him say he really enjoyed a proper battle. Has he even been in a proper battle?
But yeah that's definitely an area where he can make a step up.
Watch him divebomb, and push Charles off the track this weekend

Albon admits to some head scratching at Williams after unexpected practice display at Silverstone
Williams drivers Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant expressed their surprise – and urged caution – over the Grove team’s high-flying performance on the opening day of practice for the British Grand Prix. Albon featured inside the top-three positions during both of Friday’s sessions at Silverstone, finishing behind only Max Verstappen’s Red Bull and Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari on the combined timesheets, while Sargeant joined him at the sharp end with a run to fifth in second practice. FP2: Verstappen tops second practice at Silverstone from Sainz and Albon as Leclerc hits trouble It comes after a raft of updates were applied the FW45, which aided Albon’s push for P7 in Canada – lifting Williams above AlphaTauri and off the foot of the F1 standings – and led to another competitive display in Austria. Speaking after hopping out of the car, Albon said: “It was a bit surprising in some ways. I have to say unexpected, you know. We’re not playing around doing weird things, it’s just a normal day for us. “Clearly, we crossed the line and we’re in the top three, so a bit of – in some ways – head scratching, but at the same time the car feels good. Please update your cookie preferences FP2 Highlights: 2023 British Grand Prix “At least on the simulator it’s shown to be a bit more effective in the high-speed than the low-speed, and we haven’t really had too much high-speed tracks the last few races – Austria and Canada aren’t really that. “It’s the first time we’ve seen the package working on a quick circuit and it’s looking quite good. But we’ve got to keep ourselves grounded, it’s [about] chipping away. NEED TO KNOW: The most important facts, stats and trivia ahead of the 2023 British Grand Prix “The wind, the way that it is this weekend, it’s so strong, I think everyone… It doesn’t feel good around here, I think it feels terrible for everyone, but clearly less terrible for us than others, so let’s see.” As for where Williams might stack up on Saturday, Albon pointed to the mixed weather report, saying: “Tomorrow is going to be likely wet for a little bit. I hope it stays dry, I hope it’s similar weather to this, but let’s see what happens tomorrow. “But still the focus is on Sunday, because overtaking here is pretty easy, so you need a good race car. Our race pace was actually OK; it wasn’t amazing, but it wasn’t bad.” Albon placed third in both practice sessions at Silverstone on Friday Sargeant echoed Albon’s remarks as he looks to build on an encouraging weekend at the Red Bull Ring last time out and edge towards what would be a maiden F1 points finish. “It didn’t feel super smooth out there, to be honest,” he admitted. “This wind has been causing us a lot of issues, but I think it’s been the same for everyone, so [we’re] just trying to get on top of that. READ MORE: ‘It’s massively exciting’ – Hamilton shares more details on Apple’s F1 movie ahead of Silverstone filming “[There’s] still some stuff we can do better, for sure, heading into tomorrow. The weather looks a little bit tricky, but we’ll play it by ear. I think generally it was a solid start to the weekend and we’ll try and build off that. “Honestly, mine and Alex’s comments are pretty much in line, so that’s good. We can move in the same direction tomorrow as a team and hopefully the good pace continues.” Admitting that reaching Q2 would mark a “really good day”, Sargeant added: “I don’t think we’re getting too far ahead of ourselves yet. We’ll see tomorrow, we’ll see when quali comes around.” via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

you don't think charles' performance has visibly declined ever since the summer break? he made very silly mistakes in spa singapore and suzuka which cost him P5 P1 and P2 respectively and he always seems to have way more troubles with struggling to find a comfortable setup in fp's compared to carlos for example..he's not as good in qualifying either anymore and I've seen way too many people say he might have been more affected after france than he let on and cracking under the pressure which I didn't believe at first but now I'm not so sure
i honestly don't think so? charles has always very much been an overachiever and i love him for that, it's what makes him such a great driver. but that's also where most of his mistakes come from. but it's nothing new, really. sometimes he pushes on the other side of too hard, and he pays for it: he lost the car in imola and went from p3 to p6, he spun in q3 in silverstone and lost the pole, he crashed on his own in france...
i absolutely do not mean he's prone to mistakes or whatever, i repeat, he's a grear driver, but this has been pretty much the story of his season (since we're only talking about 2022). imo, his results after the summer are due to a mix of rb18 widening the gap and some strategy mistakes. but still, i don't see anything tragically bad from him there? in spa he qualified badly thanks to the team putting him on the wrong tyres (but had a penalty anyways so who cares) and then fucked up his race trying to get fastest lap, in zandvoort he qualified p2 (just 2 cents of a second behind max) and finished p3, in monza he qualified p1 and finished p2 because of a bit of bad luck with the vsc (even tho i think he would have finished there regardless), in singapore he got pole again and lost it because checo started better than him (and still drove a very good race imo), in suzuka he started from p2 (a cent from p1) and finished in p3 after a mistake he made at the very end of the race, on intermediate tyres that very much became slicks lmao. he did fine imo, considering the circumstances. he said it himself that he knew the championship was over when he saw the pace of the rb18 in spa.
about the set-ups i agree, but still, it's nothing new. he always admitted that it's not his strong point. he pretty much tries to get anything that will make him quicker, which is what makes the difference between his quali performance and his race pace. in quali it's better to have a more "extreme" setting, but in the race it does not work as well. but anyway, it's never that dramatic, really. yes, he struggles on fridays sometimes. who cares? when he does bad he still gets a p3 in quali, so...
yeah, about france, i don't really like all the narrative people have been building around it. he made a mistake, he admitted it, everyone knows it. that's it. now people try to twist that saying it was like "seb's hockenheim 2018" all over again which is like. the stupidest and cheapest take ever. not only bc it's factually wrong (since right afterwards seb got a p2 and a p1) but it's just.... a forced angsty take meant to make charles look like a poor woe victim of his destiny which. lmao. truly the worst thing you could do to a driver you're supposed to support.
charles is a very strong person, he showed it just these last races when fighting till the very end against a much quicker car. i think he can be a bit too hard on himself, but france was months ago, he very much made peace with it. and let's not forget that he's also very young. this year it's been the first time he ever fought for a championship. it's not surprising at all he made more mistakes than his rival who's already won a wdc (and not just any championship, but one of the most intense fight in recent years). he will have a lot more chances to grow and get better and develop his full potential.

I also want to give my opinion on this pierre/checo thing, but I'm going long for this, so i hope you want to read...
Look I have nothing against pierre, I like him a lot and I do think he is a great driver, but all his wording lately has been off.
When nico asked him about the seat, I actually thought that his answer wasn't that bad "it doesn't rely on me, but on the team" (something between those lines), but with comments like the one from today/yesterday, well, why is he so salty?
Let me explain myself. First of all, wasn't he the first one to not be able to really get on with all the hate/doubting he recieved? Like hun, why are you doing exactly the thing that knocked you off? Are you really that kind of person? I hope not... But let's go deeper.
"He's had his chance, but now he is better". Okay, I can agree with that, and then? He has been very comfortable in one team for some years now, he knows his car and how he needs to tame it for each weekend for it to work... just like checo did last year. New car means new adaptation, and he should know about that, rbr is not the easiest car to adapt and manage on track. "But is more stable now" do we know that for sure? alex had trouble, and still max has said this year that sometimes the car is very out of balance, so we can't assure last sentence. Checo has been doing such an amazing job with that car if we talk about the last to points I shared: a complete different car from his formal one (7 years driving it) and a car that is still difficult to drive. Such an amazing job that he has been the one to give more points from the second seat than his two predecesors.
"But he doesn't work on qualis" yes, that's his weak part, but guess what, he makes up for it on sundays. He ALWAYS manages to reduce the damage, doesn't matter if the fault is his or the teams, he always makes it work and cause less damage. Lately he has been having very bad luck, and the team hasn't helped completly, but as someone who has followed him I can assure you that he is actually getting better, he just needs to still decipher the car and improve a little, but because of his talent, he compensates on sundays. Pierre does good, but I don't know how good he would be at getting out of difficult situations like the ones checo has been in this year.
"He is going to cost max/rbr the championship"... checo is one of the freaking reasons of why both are so tied with lewis/mercedes! checo helping max (like today), checo giving more points to the team than before and compensating damages. Sorry, but when pierre was there this wasn't happening so, yes.
"He doesn't have the pace for a red bull" again, quali? maybe. Race? you're lying to yourself if you think that. He is so good in the races, even the team has said that he matches max's times and everything. So you trying to say this, just makes you look like a clown, sorry. And as far as I remember, those comments where never given with pierre.
Now, let's talk about their attitude. Pierre, sorry hun, but you've been salty for no reason lately. He just needs to do his thing and that's all, why comment on why he isn't on rbr. Look at george, he never questioned toto, and where is he going to be for the next year? Do you actually want me to believe that pierre would do stuff like what checo did today, without being salty and angry on the team, when he is giving this kind of declarations from an "external" team from rbr? Would he be all about team work? Or again the young ambition would blind his mind? Not saying that ambitioning things are bad, but sometimes you need to help and that's it, hurtful and unfair, yes pretty much, but this is life. Oh, and he would be nice enough to go out to the cameras, face the hate, and still say that he's happy for the team and that he believes on the next part of the weekend/race? Yes, I don't think so right now. But checo has been implecable in all this stuff, so he works.
And just to close this, helmut and christian, both have given more good declarations about checo than anyone... They have said negatives also, true, but also they have said very good things, even apologizing about stuff (I don't remember them doing that with another driver that it wasn't max). They know checo, and how good he has been working with the team, so pierre should stop being salty and let the job do the work and not his mouth, because right now he sounds like those kind of people who threw him to the mud.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk. If you want to talk, just please be respectful. Have a nice day and have this pic of checo a gift...

🎤 Lando at the post-Sprint press conference in São Paulo:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Interviewer: Lando, talk us through those opening moments of the race from your point of view. Just how good was your initial launch and then the run into Turn 1?
Lando: Talk you through it… I was first, and then second (smiles). And... I just... I don’t know. I think I have to re-watch it, I'm not sure what happened. My reaction and initial drop was good but then the second phase, not so good. But that's all I know for now (smiles).
So yeah, tough opening lap I would say. Obviously not what I wanted, and then always difficult to manage the tyres as much as what you want, when you're in second. But it was still a good race, it was still good fun. I was caught sleeping a little bit with George. He was pushing a lot on the opening couple laps and I feel like maybe he paid the price quite heavily on lap 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 and 7 and 8 (smiles) all the way to the end.
But I tried then to get into the DRS of Max. I thought if I had an opportunity, I would try and get it early on, so I could kind of control the race a little bit more from out front and in some cleaner air. But I never quite got close enough and I struggled just a little bit too much, especially in the last 5 laps of the race, to look after the tyres as much as what Max was able to do. But nevertheless a strong race and good points.
Interviewer: Tell us a little bit about your tyre wear. Were you managing from the out lap as well, like Max?
Lando: I was managing in Qualifying already (smiles). These are the tyres from quali, right? So yeah, it's a tough circuit. You don't feel like you can push anywhere. It's kind of always a little bit like this, but it feels, I don’t know, similar to COTA in a way, like you do 2 laps, then after that, it's just... you’ve got no grip and you're managing and you have one little wheel spin and it costs you 2 or 3 tenths straightaway.
So again, a management-based race. Positives, 'cause this definitely wasn't a circuit where we were expecting to be at all close with the Red Bull, you know? If you look at our data from last year and where we're good and bad this definitely wasn't up there with one of the good ones. And we weren't expecting it to be, necessarily, a very good one and sometimes we're good in quali and then quite poor in the race. But today we were good comparing to everyone, except Max. So yeah, tough, but a good day for us, I think.
Interviewer: How much confidence does that give you ahead of tomorrow's Grand Prix?
Lando: I mean, it's always different. Definitely good confidence. You know, I didn't do any more laps than 3 in a row in FP1 (smiles). So we were a bit blindsided with what to expect, of course, that was our own choice. But maybe we weren't best prepared for what to expect today, but still to be so good was a positive sign. And we'll try and maximise that for tomorrow. So of course, I think we know what we're aiming for. Probably not P1 (smiles). But up there in the top 3 is probably our goal.
Journalist Questions:
Q1 (Jake Boxall-Legge – Autosport): Lando, on the topic of Sprints is there anything you could suggest?
Lando: On the topic of Sprints? Nope (smiles). I don't know, it doesn't matter what we say, you know? Our choices rarely have much effect with anything. Especially with this. So, I don't know... everything seems dictated by team bosses and what they want to do and what they choose to do. So, I mean, you say we're not pushing, but you still push to the limit you have. Of course you're not pushing like it's qualifying. I don't think you’ve ever pushed like it's qualifying, probably ever in Formula 1. But you still saw good racing apparently, from everyone behind.
So if everyone is pushing flat out, I would say you almost probably see less overtakes than what you did today. So in that sense, you're probably asking for a more boring race, which is not what you want. So I think what we had today was tough and maybe not the most enjoyable, you don't feel like you're pushing that much but you’re still driving on the limit of the grip you’ve got and all of those things.
It’s still a challenge for us behind the wheel. I think it’s exciting for the people who get it right and people who don't get it right. But if you've got no degradation at all, then I’d probably say you're not going to have one overtake for the whole race.
Q2 (Erwin Jaeggi – Motorsport.com) There was a new rule for qualifying, where you can’t stand still at the end of the pit lane anymore. I just wanted your opinion on this, please.
Lando: I don't know... I don't mind, to be honest. Again, we have no say in these rules. They just get implemented no matter if we think it's good or bad for the sport. Same with the minimum lap time stuff. Like, I got a reprimand this morning for 2 cars ahead of me coming out of the pit lane, or one crossing over the Safety Car line, one coming out the pit lane at the same time. I can't overtake, otherwise I'm going to be racing on a qualifying lap, which is stupid. So I have to back off, and therefore I'm below the minimum time and I get a reprimand for that. Like (smiles), it's just a silly thing.
Not that the stewards made the wrong decision, it’s just, it's a rule that shouldn't be in my opinion, because I did absolutely nothing wrong. I didn't block anyone, I didn't get in anyone's way. I've just not overtaken and caused a race in qualifying and I get a reprimand for that. So just silly things. And even with this, like, it's a tough one. Of course, people do go slowly and things like that, but if you're scared of it, just go out of the pit lane earlier and avoid all the queueing. It's quite a simple one.
The only point is when you have like 4 minutes left on the clock or 2 minutes left on the clock, and you’ve got a guy at the front of the queue who just waits 30 seconds, 20 seconds. Does a, you know, Fernando and Lewis, back in McLaren, and then you kind of screw everyone over, so that's the only probably unfair thing. But I think there's just more and more rules for everything and it just causes more and more havoc for everyone.
Q3 (Scott Mitchell-Malm – The Race) Lando, as competitive as the McLaren does look, you seem to be making a big difference this weekend, given the gap between you and Oscar. I wonder how well do you think you're driving this weekend? I know you said after qualifying earlier to use your words that you’re "so shit at qualifyin:’ but what do you really think about the performance you've done this weekend?
Lando: Obviously, I know probably a bit more than what everyone sees, but my last few weekends have been very strong. I'd probably say, like the last 4 or 5 weekends, have been my strongest in terms of absolute pace and extracting the maximum out of the car. I just made those silly little mistakes here and there in qualifying, your know? , whether it was Mexico or previous races.
But a lot of these times the pace was probably some of my strongest and the best I've been driving, if it wasn't for these little things. And, of course, then I'm disappointed at times and I always say I should have been on Pole or I should have been 2nd, and there just have been a lot of should-have, would-have, could-haves, which I understand, but it's 'cause it's the truth.
I think today we proved it, but yesterday we probably should have been on Pole if we did as good of a job as we did today. That same goes for us in Qatar. And the last 2, 3 weekends, I feel like I've been on top of things a lot more. And I have felt very comfortable. There's still a lot of things which I'm not comfortable with, but I definitely feel most on top of the car than I ever have been.
And some of that is figuring out weaknesses that I have with the car and just things that I'm struggling with. And some of it is just confidence and putting things together and executing laps and executing good races and things like that. So I don't think it's just this weekend or anything’s suddenly changed.
But here, Mexico, Suzuka, Texas, yeah, Qatar, I think all of these have been some very good races, very good performances, extremely good pace, probably in every single one but just a few too many of these little mistakes.
And I think that's why I've been disappointed, it’s when you're missing out on a pole or P2.  You feel like  you've missed out on some very good opportunities. And we need it for the championship. We want it against Astons and things like that.
So yeah, just some difficult moments and things I know I need to work on as a driver, but I know it and working on it. So yeah, a good weekend for me so far. Of course, not a great job as team yesterday in qualifying but I feel like we made up for it today.
Q4 (Mat Coch – Speedcafe.com) Just picking up on something that Lando said about the drivers not being listened to. It's not the first time that those comments have been made across a couple of different topics. You've got the GPDA to represent you, but it doesn't have any formal power. Do you as drivers feel that? You're listened to both I guess as individuals and through the GPDA? And would you like to see some sort of formal representation in things like the F1 Commission and the governance of the sport?
Lando: I’ll just correct you, 'cause you're probably gonna headline it ‘stewards don't listen to what drivers say’, but I definitely didn't say that. I just said that we don't have control of the decisions.
Of course, they listen to us and they take it on board, but if we go ask ‘can you please do this’ all of a sudden, of course they listen to it but it doesn't mean it’s gonna be something that gets changed straightaway. And sometimes it's for later on down the line. So don't misquote me, thanks (smiles).

Hi!!!
Sorry to bother you but i always seem to agree with your opinions and i've thinking a lot about this: who do you think is the next wdc after Lewis retires?
I believe Lewis will retire next year after he wins the 8th wdc and assuming the next wdc is someone from the young generation i believe George is the big front runner (i really don't see another team stepping up anytime soon)!
Hope you understood my English and thank you!
hey there! first I want to say that you could never bother me by asking a question, I really love answering them and I always get really happy when I receive them, so please do not hesitate to send me one again if you’re wondering about something. thank you for saying you agree with me a lot, that makes me really happy 🧡 also, your English was perfect, so don’t worry about that! to answer your question: George. and I know this might seem like I am biased after posting about George a million times this weekend, so hear me out. the best reference that we have to compare George is Valtteri is yesterday’s race and to be fair, George absolutely embarrassed him in that one. the Mercedes is an incredible car, it really is. but there are certain things a car cannot do. extracting the maximum performance (especially in quali), execution in tense moments (starts, restarts, stops, overtaking), awareness and adaptation to the car and a sense of composure. that was all George. his overtakes were absolute perfection. when you compare them to other driver’s overtakes, for example Max’, his often are too aggressive, which often comes back to bite him in the ass. George’ timing and feel of the car is absolutely brilliant. this is a quality you also see in Lewis.  time after time people keep arguing that you can put anyone in a Mercedes and they will win, but that’s just not true. a driver needs to be consistent. a driver needs to know what to do in the most crucial moments. when you look at the past few years, all you see from Lewis is consistency. George is also consistent. Valtteri, not so much. and of course, Valtteri could have had a bad day yesterday, but I’ve been watching F1 for quite some time now and I’ve seen many times before that once a little bit of extra pressure comes into play, Valtteri doesn’t perform. I don’t want to take away from him and what he’s achieved, cause of course he has also shown us good races and he’s also shown us beautiful overtakes. yet, when you look at the general picture, he’s just not as good as George. he’s perfect as a second driver, but in my opinion he’s not championship material. George also still has a lot to learn and I won’t deny that. he needs more experience driving at the front of the field and could do better when it comes to strategies. but George is young, he’s a quick learner and we’ve seen this weekend that he can adapt in no time. Lewis has said it, Toto has said it and I will say it too: George is up to the task. he will be the next reigning world champion. mark my words.

Adventures of Superman #506 (November 1993)
Superman vs. Superboy! I mean, vs. Superman, since the Kid still insists that Superboy is definitely NOT his name and never will be. The two Supermen meet while the younger, radder one is dealing with some sort of deformed flying babies that are trying to kill him, which is the sort of thing that happens to you when you wear an “S” emblem on your chest.
Tumblr media
These turn out to be deformed flying babies THAT EXPLODE, but the Kid is able to push them away with his (very non-Superman-esque) telekinesis powers. He then deduces that these things must have come out of Project Cadmus, the top secret genetic experimentation facility that created him, and brushes off the elder Superman to get back at those geeks by doing what he does best: being a brat on live TV.
Tumblr media
So I guess the “top secret” part of Cadmus’ description is no longer accurate, thanks to the Kid. On the other hand, I kinda feel like the people of Metropolis deserved to know that there's a nearby government facility churning out genetic atrocities into their sewers.
The Cadmus gang sends Guardian to bring their wayward creation home so they can talk to him. Obviously the Kid isn't very interested, and for a while it looks like we might get the fight scene teased in the cover, but then Superman the First convinces Superman the Second that he should at least hear them out. And, while at it, ask Cadmus to tell him exactly what the hell he is. If he’s Superman’s clone, why does he have those weird TK powers? The Kid agrees, but... he doesn't like the answers he gets.
Tumblr media
The Kid finds out that he's NOT a clone of Superman since, as established a while back, Kryptonians are damn hard to clone. So, since Cadmus was determined to create a new Superman after the original appeared to be dead, they instead took a clone of a regular, non-super man and genetically modified it to approximate Superman's powers (for instance, translating Superman’s “aura” into a telekinetic field). But who was that human DNA donor? Surely it was someone good and cool!
Just after the Kid wonders that, the quite evil and deeply uncool Director Westfield bursts into the lab and demands that this "super-punk" be taken into custody, probably so they can flush him down the toilet like Cadmus' other failed experiments. Superman makes Westfield see that making Cadmus' whistleblower disappear wouldn't look very good right now, but they can't just let him run around unsupervised. So, at Guardian's recommendation, the esteemed telepath Dubbilex is assigned to follow the Kid wherever he goes. I smell a sitcom! (Or a spin-off comic.)
As a last order of business, the Kid decides to give Superman his trademark to the Superman name, which his manager Rex Leech doesn't take too well. So what are they gonna call this teenage “S” emblem-wearing hero now? Superman has an interesting suggestion: SUPERBOY. Our young friend still isn't a fan.
Tumblr media
But after storming out and thinking about it for a couple of pages (and trying out the name on some guys robbing a jewelry shop), the Kid realizes he's "earned" the title of Superboy and accepts it. Character development! And just in time for his solo series. ("That Non-Superman Clone Who Also Calls Himself Superman" wouldn't look good on a cover.)
Plotline-Watch:
The final page shows a shadowy figure shaped like the recently introduced Bloodthirst outfitting someone with a weapon-teleporting gizmo, then calling him "Bloodsport"... except that this dude is quite paler than the Bloodsport we met way back in Superman #4 (in an issue inked by current writer Karl Kesel, so you'd think he'd remember the character). This looks nothing like Idris Elba! What gives?!
Tumblr media
Superboy is still bummed out because his friend Tana Moon left Metropolis without telling him where she was going, which is now known as "ghosting". In the end, Rex talks about sending Superboy on a promotional tour to establish his new brand, and the first destination of that tour will be... exactly where Tana went to hide from Superboy. This is now known as "time to get a restraining order."
Clark Kent is slowly morphing into a hipster the longer he rooms with Jimmy Olsen. For a long time I assumed all the bands listed in the panel below were made up, but turns out the only non-existing ones are “James Rock” and "Axel Rose". Luckily, Superboy was happy to give Clark's old apartment back to him (apparently only Pulitzer-winning journalists can afford it), so Jimmy won't hipsterize him for much longer.
Tumblr media
Westfield gladly assigns Dubbilex to Superboy because it means there won't be a telepath at Cadmus to read his thoughts and find out about his evil plans (like sending the ugly flying babies after Superboy). Very clever, Westfield! Except for the fact that he thought that right in front of Dubbilex, who clearly "heard" the whole thing.
Tumblr media
Incidentally, there's an apparent error in this issue when Superboy thinks "They won't take me without a fight!" and Guardian shows up and says "That's too bad, son. Because I don't want to fight you." How did Guardian know what Superboy was thinking? Obviously, Dubbilex patched Guardian through to Superboy's mind to assist in finding him. Now where's my damn Baldy Award?!
Is it me or is this page reminiscent of the cover to Superboy Prime's first appearance during Crisis on Infinite Earths?

Patreon-Watch:
Special thanks to your Patreon pals Aaron, Murray Qualie, Chris “Ace” Hendrix, britneyspearsatemyshorts, Patrick D. Ryall, and Samuel Doran, and welcome aboard to Bheki Latha (our first $6.50 patron ever!), Mark Syp, and Ryan Bush! You are all excellent. This month they got to read a long-ass post entitled 45 Things I Learned by Reading the “Death of Superman” Novel (Part 1), in which I talked about the stuff Roger Stern added to the canon in the first part of the Death and Life of Superman book. This includes Superman’s private thoughts on the JLI (and Guy Gardner in particular), what Lex Jr. calls Supergirl in bed, and Professor Hamilton getting romantic. But now: the Don Sparrow show! Take it away, Don.
Art-Watch (by @donsparrow):
The end of an era, at least temporarily, as Tom Grummett draws his last Adventures of Superman issue, moving onto Superboy (and I think still doing Robin at this time?) with Karl Kesel.  He’ll return for the quarterly Superman: Man of Tomorrow and other things, but it’s a long gap until he does.
A pretty good cover, with Superman and Superboy about to tussle.   Though it can be seen as cheaping out on the backgrounds, I always love radial rays as an effect.
Inside the issue, we have a great splash page of Superboy getting attacked by botched clones, and I love the gesture here—having his head snapping away from the camera adds to the motion and action.  Great stuff.
Tumblr media
Though he won’t be drawing her again for a while, Grummett excels at the new, shorter-haired Lois in these pages.  Superman soaring to the skies is a great panel as well, and I especially like the way his cape and fist slightly break the panel barrier, giving it a sense of motion, again.
Tumblr media
The sequence of Guardian acrobatically flipping from one ledge to another is very well drawn.  Ditto the splash on page 13, where Superboy loses his temper.  The body language in this whole sequence tells the story very well, as Superman is calm and patient, confident in his ability not only to reach Superboy with his words, but also withstand him physically.
The way Superboy snaps the carpet, but controls it mentally with his Tactile Telekinesis is a great example of his unique powers in use.  It reminds me of a technique they tried on the CW Supergirl show (but almost immediately abandoned) where they made like the Kryptonian fabric of their capes was like “smart fabric” and could be used as a weapon.
Lastly, the dreamy, child-like expression on Superboy’s face during the Peter Pan exchange is wonderful, and a fitting end for Tom’s run on the book. [Max: You mean the William Shatner exchange, Don.]
Tumblr media
STRAY OBSERVATIONS:
I almost never like it when they reference pop culture stuff in Superman comics, particularly music.  Karl Kesel isn’t the worst offender in that department (that would be JM DeMatties a few years down the line, who had Clark Kent bizarrely asserting he loved the Beastie Boys) but Clark’s discussion with Jimmy about an apparently fictional musician working with a rolodex of early nineties names makes me cringe (as does trying to imagine how awful a “Hip Hop Lyle Lovett” or “Grunge Frank Sinatra” would sound).
The car poster on the wall of Jimmy’s bachelor pad looks for all the world like Robin’s Redbird, also a Tom Grummett creation.  (Fun fact:  Tom once told me he still gets {very small} royalty cheques from the Batman & Robin movie, because Robin’s motorcycle was called the Redbird, though that might no longer be true with Paul Levitz no longer in charge of such matters.)
Superboy (in no less than his third time calling those pink creatures “spuds”) references John Candy and Joe Flaherty’s “Farm Film Celebrity Blow Up” where the guests would frequently “blow up real good” and it does my SCTV loving Canadian heart good.
It’s interesting (and a little sad) that they again note that Superboy knows things (pop culture, etc) without ever having experienced it.  I feel like there’s a lot they could do with this concept.
This issue reads very much like the end of the Superboy “Reign” issues, as Superman is more of a secondary character to the kid.  All of it begs the question of why Superman, or Guardian put up with Cadmus.  Superman has said in previous issues that he has moral problems with how Cadmus treats life with their cloning experiments, and they’ve attacked him in the past (and also stole his corpse!) so other than the fact that it’s a launchpad for Superboy’s series, there’s really no reason any of these heroes should associate with Cadmus.  Especially Guardian, who comes off as little more than an errand boy here.  He wants to bring Superboy in, but won’t promise Superboy won’t be harmed or imprisoned?
Nice to see Superboy return to his “Slammin’” catch phrase!
An interesting bit of foreshadowing when Superboy asks Big Words whose clone he is, and who immediately enters but Westfield. [Max: That’s right, Westfield! Not Luthor! Sorry, sorry.]

Okay I’m like several months late with my Hot Takes re Drive to Survive but I wrote out about 50 million pages in my notebook about S2 so you’re getting them anyways! (I’m sorry that this is so long I had a lot of thoughts) - Warning for spoilers!
First of all, I like DTS I think it’s a very good addition to F1 and captures the drama (albeit amplified drama for effect in places but we’ll get to that) and brings across the personal side of F1 very well. It’s catered towards the casual fan rather than the fanatic which I think is great and it can be entertaining still for the avid viewer because of the focus on the personal aspect. I liked that we got more people this series like Rupert, Michael, Paddy etc. It was nice to see more of the people around the drivers and how they all make the F1 World tick. The only addition I didn’t like was the whole Rich Energy stuff I don’t think it added anything other than unnecessary air time for Rich Energy At first I wasn’t sure about the episode per team ‘narrative’ but it grew on me as I watched more not totally as I still have some issues with it.
Will Buxton....There’s certain bits I liked about his inclusion such as the added context to things that might not have made sense to the casual viewer. I think my main problem came in the Ferrari episode where he overemphasised the rivalry beyond the racetrack. I get Netflix wanted to push the rivalry but it was undermined by the clips of the drivers interacting. I don’t really like Will as a journalist that much but I do feel that an outside context to provide an element of narration is needed just maybe not by him.
My main issue with DTS is the narrative structure of it but I understand that Netflix wanted to push the narrative that they want. For example the portrayal of Max in season 1 and then this supposed Daniel Vs Carlos rivalry (maybe it exists I don’t know but if I looked at f1 2019 I wouldn’t say that there was this whole massive rivalry between them). I think it would’ve worked had they gone for the more Mclaren vs Renault rivalry instead of going ‘these two drivers’ and focused on the whole team instead. I’m not a huge fan of the team by team episodes (especially as three teams were basically omitted from the series (Toro Rosso were there for like a second but no real focus on them)) and would’ve preferred a more linear structure of 2 races per episode say but that’s just my opinion. I think there was no real progression through the season you knew Australia was first and Brazil was towards the end but you had no real reference as to the order of the races. I was about to say that you know it was getting later in the year as episodes went on but then I remembered ep 9 catapults you back to Silvo and then suddenly you go to Brazil and then Abu Dhabi and it’s the end of the season.
I also feel that a double hit of the Red Bull saga was nice but I think more inclusion of Toro Rosso would’ve been good at this point (a mention of Dany would’ve been brilliant) but I understand a lot was happening around the driver switch which was more interesting than another story line they could’ve explored.
I think there was too much Renault or at least too much for mu liking. They got half the first ep and half the second and then another later on. It was a lot for a team that had a pretty uninteresting year. Idk if they had some sort of deal or whatever but it was a lot.
No Racing Point or Alfa Romeo was interesting. I think Kimi’s contribution at the end was great and in some ways I love that, that’s all we get but I would’ve liked more of him and I think Netflix could’ve made some sort of ‘cult hero’ out of him but there we go. (Is cult hero the right term? Idk but you get what I mean hopefully).
Mclaren got half an episode basically. I liked what we got but it wasn’t enough in my view and it didn’t cover their whole resurgence from the years before. More could’ve been made of the fact that they were so bad previous and that 2019 was a real turning point and such a good season for them. I know Netflix is all about the drama but I think they really missed out on not including Lando at all except for 1 or 2 seconds of screen time that he got. Comedic relief would’ve worked nicely. Especially with how likeable he is as a person and how marketable he can be (I hate that phrase, sorry Lando). He was one of the three rookies. 2nd in F2, given the hype at the end of Season 1 and then nothing in Season 2. If they hadn’t gone team by team then a rookies episode would’ve been really interesting. And we know how much Netflix followed him because of Instagram, Twitch etc. It baffles me really that he wasn’t included more.
Some races were pretty much glossed over completely (no mention of the 1000th Race in China, fine it was boring but surely the 1000th race deserves a mention). Some missed the drama. Canada - Switching of the signs. Japan - Quali and race on the same day. No mention of P20 to P2 in Germany for Seb at his home race (fine they were following Mercedes there but). Bahrain? Was Bahrain mentioned at all? I just think there was a lot missed out. Also Renault- Disqualified from Japan? Surely that’s drama enough for you Netflix.
No tribute to Charlie was also a strange move considering how big a part he was of the sport. Even a mention would’ve been nice. A tribute. Anything really. It was disappointing.
I didn’t really like the Haas episode but this is mainly the beef I have with Gunther rather than anything else.
The Mercedes episode was really nicely done, I really liked it. The addition of the timer for the pitstop was a great move. The Wiliams episode was prossibly my favourite - Not enough Robert though I have to say, if you need a story there’s one! Of all the episodes I think this one flowed the best and I enjoyed Claire’s interview with the Netflix lady when she didn’t ask the final question and Claire asked her too and gave a great answer. But that’s probably because I am a long suffering Williams fan so there we go.
I did like DTS, I know this post comes across as me going ‘this is wrong, this is bad’ but it’s mostly just small irritations that I have with it and I do understand that they can’t include absolutely fucking everything into it. It’s a nice addition to the sport and I hope it brings more fans in (Pretty sure it has been doing so which is always nice). I liked all the episodes except the Haas one and the majority of the Carlos vs Dan ep but I do feel it is an improvement on season 1 and that as time progresses the series will get better and better. So yeah, overall I liked it I just personally had a few issues with some bits but I’m excited for whatever they’re gonna make with Season 3.
(Sorry this is so long, If you’ve read all of it, thank you and fucking well done)

this narrative that only merc + lewis can put up a fight against rbr + max is so disrespectful of charles' performance this year. if you take the first half of the 2021 and compare to charles' first half of the 2022 season, lewis made more mistakes than charles. what made possible for lewis to still be in the championship fight -- apart from merc's upgrade in silverstone and the powerful engine /// meanwhile ferrari's performance went down -- was those points max lost through no fault of his own in baku, silverstone and hungary; and not lewis' relentless consistency, because still in the second part of the season he did not maxmise his results: spa qualy, monza sprint start which put him in the back foot for the race, turkey... media acts like lewis' 2021 performance was so much better than what charles is delivering this year, i don't think that's fair.
I think everyone would be better off if we all agreed that all drivers make mistakes. They all do. At different rates and with different outcomes but they all do.
And hindsight tends to paint things in a favourable light in F1. Both Lewis and Max were talked about as not deserving to win at different stages of last season because of mistakes they had made but that doesn't actually make them undeserving. But now some people talk about both of them (primarily because they are both champions) as if they've never made a single mistake in their entire careers and that's also not true.
Charles mistakes this season especially France just look really bad. And they are on him! But I don't like that people are using especially France to come to the conclusion that he is absolutely unable to deal with pressure the way that a Lewis or a Max is. Because we don't really know. Charles season this season isn't like the other twos season last year or really any other season they have competed for a title in.
There is a difference in competing against a great driver in a great team and a great car and doing all of that while also fighting your own team. You can't really say one situation is definitely more pressure than the other but it certainly is a different situation when you are competing despite your team especially when you are fighting against someone who has 100% of their teams support behind them who can fully trust his team while you don't fully have that.
Ferrari and Charles himself too still have things to learn and have to grow but using this season to prove that Charles is absolutely lacking comparatively isn't right. Because I think we would all agree that things would be looking different if he had a more competent team behind him like a Max or a Lewis. We don't know how much better but definitely better. And I would even argue that France wouldn't have happened the way it did if he didn't have to compensate for losing 4 wins back to back through no fault of his own.
But I also reject this idea that Ferrari can't get their shit together and also lost in all of this is that Mercedes are actually not that much better when it comes to on the fly strategy but people just forget about it because they've had a much better car for a lot of the last few seasons.
I am super biased but I would prefer to see Charles and Max fighting it out than Max and Lewis if I have to pick two just because I think their driving styles lend themselves much better to fighting each other.
The thing is Max+RB+the car is a pretty well oiled machine rn and you need to be in an equally as well functioning system to compete and neither Merc nor Ferrari are there rn. Next season might be completely different but imo nobody should this season against Charles.
