🌹 A Year of Rosegarden Prompt 5: Maypole🌹

It was a festival they held in their town every fourth spring. A celebration of a cycle of survival and good fortune completed.

And like every tradition, it came with it’s own superstitions and legends.

The person who holds the other end of your ribbon will be the person you spend your life beside, the old folks would say.

The old story of the maypole, which people would take a ribbon and dance around in celebration.

Oscar didn’t hold much stock in old wives’ tales like that.

But that year, someone else joined the dance.

A girl with silver eyes and silver laughter, a person who had much on her mind and a heart so big he couldn’t comprehend.

Someone who brought her friends with her wherever they went.

And that year, as the crowd travelled in a circle around the Maypole, each carrying a ribbon, Oscar noticed that the pink ribbon he held in his hand matched the one Ruby held in her’s.

Maybe Oscar could afford to put a little bit of stock into old wives’ tales.
