Riddle couldn't help the warmth of his face as you held I'm close. Your fingers carefully running through his hair as he cuddled into your chest. Eyes closed tightly, he squeezed your waist, mumbling his words.

"I....I love you....My Heart"

He heard you hum, his fingers digging into your clothes as you mumbled back--his face burning even brighter.

"And I love you, My King"

Ace couldn't help but take in a deep breath, inhaling your scent with a smile. It was a calming one. One he couldn't help but feel comfort and warmth in. It was your scent, the person he loved.

Pulling you closer to his chest, he tightened his arms around you. "I love you so much, My Royal"

The male felt you grip the front of his shirt, pulling yourself closer to him. "I love you too, My Prince"

Deuce could feel his face heat up as you placed a kiss on his forehead. He buried his face further into your collarbone, placing a shy kiss on your skin. He couldn't help but shiver at your giggle, your breath cold on his warm skin.

"Love you, My Blueberry" You had mumbled into his hair, placing another kiss on his head.

Gulping nervously, the male let out a shaky breath and mumbled back. "Lov-Love you too, My Dear"

Trey chuckled as you whined and pulled him back. He laid on his back, running a hand down your back as you snuggled into his neck. Your breath against his skin made him shiver slightly, his cheek resting on your head.

"I love you so much, Pretty Boy/Girl"

Your arms tightened around his waist as you mumbled sleepily. "Love you so so soooo much, My Tart"

A small snort left the male's mouth at the nickname.

Cater hummed in content as he snuggled into your stomach. Your fingers messed with his hair, running through it and twisting it between them. He could feel his mind start to get foggy, sleep overtaking his senses.

He was able to slur out his love for you before drifting to sleep. "Love yous soo much Sweets"

"Love you as well, My Model" You mumbled back, closing your own eyes and slowly drifting off to sleep.

Do you think Hawks will die to save Toga?

Personally, I wouldn't like it if either of them died. Like, the potential narrative payoff here would be strongest if both of them lived, imo. I would rather see a situation where Keigo donates just enough blood to stabilize them both, rather than a situation where one person completely exsanguinates themselves and leaves behind a rash of trauma and unresolved feelings in the person they "saved."

I'm definitely not the best when it comes to Hawks meta, but I'll try my best to break down my personal feelings on why I feel both Keigo and Himiko need to live in order to "break the cycle":

1. You Can Start Over. I'll Help You.

This one's the biggest, most obvious point in favor of them both living imo. Hawks made an offer to help Jin start over, but rescinded that offer and immediately went for the kill the moment Jin showed signs of resistance. This was Keigo's biggest failure as both a hero and as an individual, and something he has yet to atone for.

In turn, Himiko believes there are no second chances-- that her only options are death or being locked away forever. So, she chooses death. She needs someone to offer her a third option.

The set up is there.

There's also the matter of Keigo and Himiko both stating that they want an "easier world" as their core motivation, and both of them state that they want to be the ones who help make that world.

Their goals only sound simplistic on the surface and serve as a mask for their respective traumas, but... ultimately, a world that's easier for Himiko to live in (where she is consensually given blood by someone who loves her and she is allowed to give her blood back to the world in return) is a world where heroes can finally take it easy-- because it's a world that nips the endless creation of its own "villains" in the bud, through unified acts of compassion and understanding.

Both characters have caused others intense pain and hurt others in their attempts to take shortcuts to the creation of an "easier world"-- Hawks is the hero that's "too fast," and Himiko is also associated with her near-supernatural speed. They're both too impatient and want the quickest possible results. Having both Himiko and Keigo living and learning the "right way" to create their ideal world-- and then, getting to be a part of that world as they both continue to atone-- feels much more meaningful than having one or both of them die before they can see that future reach fruition.

2. The Big, Suicidal Elephant in the Room

The majority of the LOV members all struggle with suicidal ideation-- Touya wants to set everything Endeavor ever chose over him ablaze, and he wants that inferno to also serve as his funeral pyre. Tomura has got a dissertation's worth of issues regarding his own mortality and self-perception/identity, and his whole "let's-just-destroy-it-all/we-don't-need-a-future-actually-lol" schtick has always been a symptom rather than a legit proposal for a cure. Himiko wants to disappear into the identities of the people she loves, because the world treats her a little more kindly when she isn't "Toga Himiko." The LOV trio's arcs all revolve around "death of the self" to some degree. (That said... resurrection and rebirth are also heavy themes within Tenko, Touya, and Himiko's arcs, soooo....)

Keigo also struggles with suicidal ideation and places the worth of his own life far, far, faaaaar below that of everyone else.

This has already been said, and shouldn't really need to be said in the first place, but-- people have every right to feel uncomfortable and criticize a story that attempts to validate suicidal characters by portraying their suicide in a noble/redemptive light.

3. It's All About All Mi-- Err..... Tomie?

"I was fine with that-- not saving her, turning my back on her. Me, who claims he wants to help people." - Hawks, about Tomie.

"I tried to go about things the right way" is a good line that touches on one of the core conflicts of Keigo's character: He suppresses so much of his natural instinct to do good so he can do "right."

Keigo knows in his heart of hearts that "the right way" doesn't save people like his mother, it didn't save Jin, and it's not going to save Himiko. He's been groomed into upholding the society and status quo that caused him and Tomie to nearly fall through the cracks in the first place-- and I've always found it both fascinating and sad that Keigo seems to equate choosing "the right way" (i.e. becoming a hero) to abandoning his mother. Keigo effectively being *sold* to the HPSC is what took Tomie off of the streets and gave her a roof over her head-- it gave her "a chance to start over." But Keigo doesn't seem to view this as true saving. With that in mind, his attempt to "save" Jin by essentially giving him the same offer the HPSC gave Tomie was always doomed end in failure.

Keigo: "My mother feared punishment for harboring a criminal, so she took me and ran."

Tomie first ran out of fear of being arrested after Takami Thief was captured-- which led to both her and Keigo being homeless for an extended period of time. She ran again after Dabi/Touya threatened her for information on Keigo, this time out of fear of her son-- a son who had became synonymous with "the law" she feared so much in her eyes. She can't bear facing him after her betrayal and implicitly fears punishment/condemnation from him (even though Keigo had *no* intention of punishing her)-- Tomie readily leaves behind the "normal" home and "normal" life that Hawks obtained for her through "doing things the right way," bc the imaginary threat of punishment and condemnation is something that comes across as worse for her. This only further convinces Keigo that he failed to save his mother, even though he's the one who's being betrayed and hurt by her.

I can't help seeing similarities between Tomie & Himiko's decisions to run out of an intense fear of punishment/imprisonment, and how this inevitably ties to Keigo. Keigo subconsciously realizes that he can't truly save people like Tomie, Jin, or Himiko as "Hawks" because "Hawks" is part of the problem. He longs to save others as himself-- as "Takami Keigo" (which is why the loss of his quirk kind of has me like "👀 👀 👀 whatcha gonna do next, turkey boy...,,..👀 👀 👀" )

As an aside, I seem to recall that transhawks made a few meta post where they talk about how there are traces of Jin's design in Tomie (esp her eyes, which have the same dead-eyed thousand yard stare) and that their resemblance is likely intentional (edit: link to one post pointing the resemblance out)-- It's not as overt, but imo, Himiko also resembles Tomie (just a little!) when she has her hair down.

Anyway! Both Jin and Himiko dying after Keigo A) has spent his whole life agonizing about how his own mother wasn't able to survive in their current society, B) has expressed guilt about how he didn't even try to save her and didn't make attempts to involve himself in her life, C) has talked at length about he wanted to be "more like Bubaigawara" and then proceeded to roleplay him, badly, for a good third of Act 3 (ohhhh boy ☠️☠️☠️), and D) had demanded that Toga be killed immediately after she arrives in Gunga, only for Ochako and Tsuyu to explicitly challenge and reject the idea that killing was the only option available.... idk, Himiko dying while Keigo does nothing would just feel massively incoherent at this point??

TL;DR The resolution to Keigo's arc currently hinges on addressing his origin, his identity, his guilt, and his ties to these three characters. Keigo feels that he failed with Tomie, and he explicitly failed with Jin-- and I personally don't think his arc can have a satisfactory ending without addressing those failures through Himiko, or without him trying to right where he went wrong by helping her in some capacity. This is a chance for him to finally follow his innate drive to do good over doing what their society dictates as "right."

All that being said, if Hori did decide to have Hawks sacrifice himself: Hawks choosing to sacrifice himself because he wants to believe in the future that the hero kids are creating and wants to believe that children like Himiko have a place in that future feels WAAAY more tonally consistent with mha's themes than Himiko choosing to sacrifice herself because she doesn't think she has a future

One message is about healing and hope and belief, the other is about failing to truly save someone who was already suicidal from their inevitable self destruction.

MHA has been defining true saving as "going above and beyond" for hundreds of chapters now-- true saving means saving a person's heart, body, and soul. It means giving them a future. By mha's own definitions, Himiko choosing to kill herself means she wasn't saved. Pure and simple-- You can't save the heart but not the body/soul (Himiko), you can't save the soul but not the body/heart (Touya), and you can't save the body but not the heart/soul (Tomura). There's a lot more work to be done here-- but that's fine, bc MHA has never depicted true saving or true healing as some magical, instantaneous thing. (#recoverygirldni)

Pls your last two posts abt dabi with the slurry dressed reader and the innocent one are driving me crazy.

What about dabi with someone that dresses alt, slutty, and sweet/innocently depending on how ever they're feeling/whatever they want to wear. But personality-wise they're the person that takes care of everyone at the LOV, making sure they've eaten, are doing OK, maybe they have a healing/regen quirk (healing his burns so they're just normal scars with some more feeling? Ooo???), like they're the sweet mom-friend picking up after the fuckers but also dabi's fuck-toy.

Yeah.

I definitely have coherent thoughts rn.

Lmao imagine Dabi realizing they're wearing an outfit to specifically show off his markings from the night before. God Dabi would be so jealous whenever you’re acting so caring towards the other members that aren’t him I tell you.. he’ll be all grumpy and pouty, so you better make it up to him by cuddles or something else. But he still likes how sweet and thoughtful you are towards the League, he literally wants to eat you whole. He loves coming at the base and smelling the scent of homemade meal waiting for him at the table, he loves being scolded by you after he ate too much fastfood lately instead of eating the soup you prepared.

And if you have a healing quirk as well he already had his eye on you since the beginning, since you help him a lot with his new burns and injuries. The genuine worry in your eyes when you scold him for being too careless on the battlefield has him confused but at the same time it warms his heart.

Imagine his reaction when he sees you with a shirt that shows your chest painted with all the bite marks. He can’t help the grin on his face, the way you’re so proudly showing them off? In Your Hands: Spinner x GN!Reader Drabble

Rating: PG-16 - Generally wholesome with a light praise kink but contains innuendo and mentions of bedroom wear

Timeline: Just before the Overhaul arc, when the LOV is still in hiding post Bakugo rescue

Word Count: 1.5k

"To-ga! Quit squirming!"

"But it tickles soooo much!"

"Do you want me to stop?"

She whined, kicking her feet like a child. "Ohmigosh no! Please don't stop!"

Your voice fell into a hushed purr. "Then be good for me, okay Toga-chan?"

Toga's giggle that damn near glittered in the air. "Anything for you ♡."

Sitting on an old dusty crate, Spinner's eye twitched. He hunched over, burying his burning cheeks in his red scarf. "Will you guys cut it out?!"

Magne flicked her wrist, blowing on her fresh, manicure before flashing Spinner a knowing smirk. "Jealous, much?"

He thrust a shaking green finger at Magne. "T-that's not the problem and you all know it!"

"Oh?" Magne teased, using her wrist to smooth her red hair behind one ear. "Do we now?"

Kneeling on some old rags to soften the hard warehouse floor, you shifted to let some blood back into your tingling toes. Your fingers still delicately curled around her soft hand, turning it into the thin light that drifted through the cracks in the old glass. Eyes level with Toga's chest, you threaded the brush back into the nail polish bottle before the next drip could escape. "I can do your nails next if you want."

"Spinner," Toga called, flicking her free hand at the woman next to her. "Use your wizard powers to make Magne's nails dry faster so the dust doesn't ruin them."

"I'm not that old!" he roared back.

Magne smirked before muttering under her breath. "Interesting that that's the part you chose to deny..."

Toga cackled. As her hand shook with laugher, she bounced the brush against her knuckle. Baby pink paint flooded her cuticle.

You groaned reaching for a bamboo stick to scoop out the excess. "Toga! Seriously!"

"So~rry..." she apologized without a hint of remorse before pointing at Magne. "It's her fault."

Magne casually threw up her hands. "I won't deny that."

You could head Spinner's teeth grinding across the room. He glared at the warehouse door. "When the hell is everyone getting back?!" he demanded, checking his wristwatch. "They were supposed to be here twenty minutes ago!"

"Find some chill. I'm sure they'll be back soon," you called, twisting the cap back on the bottle. Blindly groping across the selections beside you frowned. "Hey, Spinner, can you pass me the one that says: 'top coat'?"

"Make Magne do it!"

Magne waved her fingers at him. "My hands are wet."

Stuffing his fists into his pants pocket, Spinner spat out a irritated noise before stalking over to your group. Red eyes searched the small cluster of options resting on the wobbly cardboard box you'd turned into a makeshift table. Plucking the one labeled "Seche Vite" from the group, he twisted off the black cap and sneezed. Eyes watering, he thrust the bottle at you. "That stuff stinks!"

You nodded, blotting the brush off on the bottle's neck. "Yeah, but it's the best one."

"Beauty knows no pain," Magne explained with a shrug.

Shoving his nose into the the crook of his arm, Spinner flopped onto the nearest crate. He narrowed his eyes, watching as you fanned Toga's fingers wide. Each delicate stroke of the slippery gloss spilled across the curve of her nail. The tip of your tongue darted out of the corner of your mouth as you leaned to one side. As the edge of your pointer shifted down the length of her middle finger, Toga bit her lip to fight the giggle.

Your lashes drifted low as a gentle smile split your lips. "Good girl," you praised.

Spinner's adam's apple bobbed. He shifted in his seat with a grimace.

Catty yellow eyes curled with naughty glee. "Do Spinner's next."

"Mhmm," you hummed, pinching your lip between your teeth. "Give me one second."

Above your head, Toga flashed him a snitty grin. "What color do you want?"

Spinner glared at her. "Unlike some people, I have better things to do than get a manicure."

"Bullshit," Magne declared, grabbing the darkest color you had. She wagged it at him. "This one."

"Daddy-and-I-don't-talk black?" Toga sneered. "Dabi will be jealous."

Magne hummed, inspecting the thick fluid with renewed interest. "You think?"

"Please," you groaned, blowing away a stray hair from Toga's pinky. "Anyone with that many piercings is obviously mad at their dad." You nodded to the girl above you. "All done. Give it fifteen before you touch things."

"Hooray!" Toga bounced off the box, sticking her tongue out. "You're next Spinner."

Rolling triceps tensed like the strain of the world was crushing his shoulders. "I—" Spinner swallowed. "I'm fine."

You rolled your eyes and patted the perch before you. "Come on."

With all the speed of a turtle, Spinner slunk over and took his place in front of you.

Without hesitation, you gabbed his hand, lifting it up to inspect his nails. Perfectly almond shaped and clean, you admired their smooth, ghost grey color. "Oh my gosh, Spinner. You have super pretty nails!"

"Huh?" Blood rushed to his face, staining his green skin an irrational shade of pastel pink. [1] "Oh... I never thought about it."

Your grinned. "These are going to look awesome. Makes me wish I had a matte top coat." You sighed wistfully. "Oh well, glossy finish will make them look like midnight water. It'll still be cool. I promise."

"Um..." He scratched his cheek. "I guess I'm in your hands then."

"Kay!" You reached to the pot of skin oil, dabbing the tiny brush over his cuticles. "Ugh. I'm super jealous of your deep nail beds! I barely need to to push these back."

As you worked the tissue with gentle strokes, Spinner's spine snapped straight as a steel rod. Your thumb slipped across his sweaty palm, resting on the bumpy edge between the scattered scales. He gritted his teeth, looking away from you.

Laying his hand back on his knee, you leaned over, the edge of your chest brushing him as you grabbed the rubbing alcohol. A sharp inhale rattled through Spinner's beak. By the time you had his fingers back in your grasp, his purple hair stood on end. He closed his eyes, focusing on the cold swipe of the cotton pad against his heated skin.

"Are you okay?"

He squinted down at you only to have his lungs cease tight. Below soft lashes, curious eyes stared up into his. Oh man... The sight of you holding his hand as you sat nestled between his knees—

"Fine," Spinner squeaked, fanning himself with stale air. "J-just a little warm."

You cocked your head, examining the bare skin just above his arm wraps. You squeezed his hand. "Hey... can I ask you a personal question?"

"W—" He cleared his throat. "What is your question?"

"Do you get goosebumps?"

He blinked before shaking his head. "Um... No. I don't have hair anywhere but my head so—"

All at once, your eyes drifted down to the seam of his pants. Time stopped. His pulse throbbed in his ears. Were you really looking at his—?

Your gaze dashed back to his as you fixed him with a nonchalant smile. "Oh, I see. That makes sense then."

The edges of Spinner's vision sparkled grey as his life flashed before his eyes. While you unscrewed the cap, he scrunched his eyes shut.

'Naked Moonfish. Think of naked Moonfish!' he commanded himself.

While the tiny brush caressed his nail with sticky basecoat, his blood simmered. Despite his best efforts, it was impossible to imagine the cannibalistic villain sans leather bondage gear. Instead, easy images of you body, barely covered in black mesh, shoved themselves to the forefront of his mind. The swell of your chest filled his imagination, begging his thoughts to turn to pebbled peaks just below the filmy, flimsy fabric.

"Do you want to ask me anything?"

He jolted at the sound of your voice. "What?!"

"In return for my question. Did you want to ask me anything?"

'Do you prefer leather or lace?' his brain screamed.

"I..." He gulped. "Can't think of anything right now."

'Well, anything aside from you on my mattress.'

Unable to hear the silent addition to his anwser, you carred on with your work. For two long, hard minutes, your hands danced from one finger to the next, working their way across his body until his pants were too tight to breath. Finally, he gasped for air as you set aside the clear bottle. As you strained to grab the black, he barely caught your next words.

"Might want to think of something, or I'll just keep asking you things instead."

He forced a laugh. "What? Are we playing a game now?"

You smirked at his hand, laying the first thick stripe of color. "Do you want me to play with you, pretty boy?"

Thud.

Half an hour later, when the rest of the league returned to the warehouse, they found three things:

Spinner's nails, perfectly coated in ink colored polish

Magne, and Toga, quietly trying to stifle their laughter.

A comatose Spinner, his mouth still foaming like he'd swallowed poison, laying cheek-to-thigh across your lap while you slowly stroked his hair.

[1] Am I the only one who doesn't understand how green skin blushes pink? Oh well...

QL Wrapped 2023

i was tagged by @nongnaos and @ranchthoughts thank youuu <333

i meant to upload this at the latest by december 31st, but the thing is when i saw the tag i was a little overwhelmed at first bc i didn't know how to fill it out and then once i had it all written out i had a super hard time deciding on what to gif and then it all ended up taking soooo much longer than planned. and now it's already 2024. oops. well, better late then never...

so without further ado:

2023 book post

I read 63 books this year (i do count short stories & novellas) and there were epic highs (everyone read the school for good mothers) and epic lows (y'all read this shit? for real?).

here are my top ten, in no particular order, followed by thoughts on the rest. it's so long lol okay let's get into it

top ten.

the school for good mothers by jessamine chan - a perfect commentary on the prison industrial complex and how poor, single, and mothers of color are treated set in a chilling near future. loved it. i read this book in june and think about it daily.

edinburgh by alexander chee - this book is a modern classic for good reason. gay tragedy lovers this book is for YOU. the prose is so beautiful, so dream like, that i couldn't stop reading. i read this book in one sitting, very nearly a year ago, and i was completely devastated by it.

in the woods by tana french - love this for: unreliable narrator who sucks but is compelling; prose about the woods and the 1980s mystery; cassie; a police procedure that starts off by being like 'crucially you must understand that the police lie.' i have a weakness for atmospheric books and this has that in spades.

homegoing by yaa gyasi - this book is SO good and the prose and character voices are excellent. it's extremely epic but somehow only 300 pages?!? each character only gets 1 chapter but gyasi does SO much with each chapter 😭 i read this in one day because i could not stop reading. i also read gyasi's other book, transcendent kingdom, which was also very good.

some desperate glory by emily tesh - this book is a mindfuck and is one of the few times i've seen [spoiler] done well. there are a lot of things this book talks about--imperialism; artificial intelligence; fascism; white supremacy and how it intersects with gender; queerness; eugenics. i posted about it early when i had only read like 49% and i was soooo wrong to do so. read this and just trust me.

x by davey davis - okay are you ready for this? X is queer/trans bdsm neo noir mystery set in a dystopian near future. it is dark, it is consuming, it is surprising, it is a book i turn over obsessively whenever i can't sleep. i need to reread and i only read it a few months ago.

baru cormorant series/the masquerade by seth dickinson - this is 3 books but let's count it as one book. much has been said about baru as a cringefail autistic marxist lesbian icon (affectionate) but what i really appreciate about these books, other than how fucking gay they are, is the specificity of the world building. i have a theory that modern readers are in search of detail (and cruelly denied by much of publishing rn). seth dickinson loves details. seth dickinson is going to take semi familiar narratives and tell them in a brand new way using details; math; hyper specific words. god i love it

poverty by america by matthew desmond - relatively short book, read it in a day. i also read desmond's first book, evicted, and it is also SO good but what's sexy about this book is that modern american society and esp. politicians frequently likes to be like 'oh no, poverty is so tragic but it can't be solved' and desmond is like 'watch me.' for people who enjoy reading andrea long chu take downs reviews and want concrete solutions for how to build a better world.

station eleven by emily st. john mandel - many people told me this was the best book they've ever read and i was like 'whatever. i'll get to it when i get to it.' DO NOT BE ME!! read this!! i wouldn't say this is a happy book but it was a beautiful book. i loved it. i cried for about 90 minutes afterwards. for art lovers, weird theatre kids, people unafraid of plague books, non linear timeline lovers, people who have been divorced.

piranesi by susanna clarke - okay i read this on my flight to frankfurt earlier this year and it totally bowled me over with how lovely it was and how emotional i got. just a beautiful, delicate, haunting, eerie book. for fans of mysteries, people who love oceans, gothic houses, people who earnestly believed magic was real as kids and hope it's real today, people who love academic drama they aren't involved in.

okay damn honorable mentions: in the dream house by carmen maria machado (SO good, maybe deserves my rec more than piranesi), normal people by sally rooney (mainly because it did make me insane), under the banner of heaven by jon krakauer (thorough, horrifying), honey & spice by bolu babalola (SO fun), sula by toni morrison (stunning!!), severance by ling ma (millennial alienation during a plague, amirite?), trust exercise by susan choi (who knows what really happened? you'll understand).

okay now the worst books i read this year, aka books i did not vibe with:

broken harbor & the trespasser by tana french; did not enjoy broken harbor due to the themes and did not enjoy the trespasser due to how cringefail the ending was. you can't depict ongoing harassment a woman of color is experiencing in her workplace, make her decide to leave after two years of this harassment, and then back track it in the last chapter? please. this is a problem tana french runs into a lot, but that is a different post

the witch elm by tana french; parts of this book were absolutely delicious. but a lot of it felt very tedious and in need of a stern editor. so many books these days need more thorough editing and the result is that a potentially amazing book is just like, okay. i understand the power fantasy that this book is designed to be, but i'm not the right audience for it (disabled). also, generally i need a character to root for.

amateur by thomas page mcbee; SO sorry thomas. i didn't vibe with this book mainly because i don't think i'm the target audience for it. i'm not cis and i'm not straight?? i also am not interested in narratives about trans men wanting to prove their masculinity by taking up a violent sport. i think this tension is addressed in the book but it wasn't addressed to my satisfaction. violence is often all the world gives to men as a source of power and thus serves as a solace for everything patriarchy takes from them, so i suppose i understand wanting to be able to get a piece of that...logically that makes sense. but also. why.

the late americans by brandon taylor; the thing is, i fucking love real life by brandon taylor and i enjoy brandon's criticism and read his substack (although i disagree with almost every aesthetic opinion he has). so possibly my expectations were too high, but i read this and i guess i was just...wanted to know what the point is. gay people suffering in the midwest? as a genre, it slaps. as a book, i feel frustrated. it felt loose, pointless, in great need of editing. brandon talks about this book by talking about the importance of moral fiction, and this book lacks moral urgency for many of its stories. i've read a lot of moral fiction and this isn't it? anyway I read this in July and looking back all I remember is Seamus' journey and the way brandon dragged workshopping.

the angel of the crows by katherine addison; look. if you're going to write sherlock wingfic, put it on ao3. if you're going to file off the serial numbers, please work harder so i can't tell what it originally was. and absolutely nix the author's note saying it was sherlock fanfic, because that makes me very unhappy! personally!

99% mine by sally thorne; classic second book syndrome. except the third one is also not very good. too bad!

touched out by amanda montei; okay obligatory disclaimer that i'm not a mother or parent but rather an adult who loves my friends' kids! this book really frustrated me and i think i would have enjoyed it considerably more if it was all cultural criticism instead of a memoir (other than the dworkin parts????). a memoir is an art form, a set narrative, but criticizing it feels weird because i am criticizing the author's life decisions as presented to me, in a flattened context, in a controlled narrative. if the memoir parts were instead part of a fictional book i would not hold back lol. this book is marketed as the most important work of feminist scholarship in the last 30 years and...it ain't. i also felt the focus was incredibly narrow. while montei does attempt to cite a broad range of theorists i just kept finding myself wondering, what about people from other cultures? what about disabled mothers? what about queer mothers or parents? what about this? WHERE'S YOUR RESEARCH? WHERE ARE YOUR INTERVIEWS? there is a specific kind of feminism where white women act like their specific experience is the pinnacle of all suffering and tbh it isn't. this book reminded me of that very strongly. like, if you're telling me you won't have an epidural because it was invented by a man then you are not a useful person to engage with, thanks.

books that would have been amazing if not for that one part

he who drowned the world by shelley parker chan - man i have mixed thoughts on this book. look away my beloved swbts mutuals. okay the epic highs (ouyang & zhu!! ma!!) were set off by baoxiang lmao. i'm mainly interested in queer masculinity and femininity and a femme straight guy is like. well, good for him, but i don't really care? bring me back to my loveds zhu and ouyang. but my main gripe...tbh i think baoxiang is a hugely unreliable narrator that protests about a lot of things too much. being straight for one thing; not having a thing for esen is another. AND MORE COULD HAVE BEEN DONE WITH THIS? like i honestly wish the implied incest thing, which was brought up at least twice, was more present. taking a step back, if you're like well i'm straight and i don't have a thing for my dead brother i helped kill but i absolutely will be seducing the spitting image of him while i fuck my way to the top of the throne? that should make me insane. possibly it would have in a book that didn't already have ouyang. who can tell. so i wish SPC had leaned into that a lot more, i wish baoxiang hadn't felt like such a plot instrument, i wish there was more Ma, i wish spoilery completely unbelievable storyline was better, etc.

in memorial by alice winn - damn, this book. it was so good but it fell apart at the end. i respect winn's decision to not have it be perfectly easy after living through the untold horrors of the trenches of wwi but the idea of two brits running away to brazil to live out a life of colonial bliss because being gay wasn't explicitly illegal in brazil at a time is like. what? i guess. anyway, it was good, i just have some notes.

romantic comedy by curtis sittenfeld - here's the thing, i love curtis sittenfeld and i knew going in that this is a book by the author that wrote rodham but man, this is a book by the author that wrote rodham. this is the most Online book i've ever read (derogatory) and it's very specific in its liberal i'm an Online author on twitter type of deal. the point of the book is that Not Tina Fey falls for Male Taylor Swift on Not Saturday Night Live and it was good, it was fun, i wasn't expecting [spoiler] ummm but it worked. i had a good time.

“I’m going to get another. You want one?” Ethan asked me. I nod as he goes and gets us another drink. The boys had just won the last game of the weekend to sweep Penn State. My boyfriend Ethan played amazing. He assisted on Grano’s goal in the first and then scored a goal in the third. They ended up beating the other team by 3 to add to their win column. I had to give them credit. After all they have faced this year, such as the illnesses, injuries, and of course the many penalties. They still somehow managed to pull all of this off. I was mostly proud of my wonderful boyfriend. He has worked so hard over the summer, and now it’s all playing off. That's how he convinces me to go out to the party with him. He claims it’s his “time to let loose”. Power to the man i guess. “Here, there’s yours.” He hands me back my solo cup. “Thank you Eddy.” I say back. “No problem. Hey come on let’s go see what Duker and Stops are doing.” He says. I follow him to the other room to be met with the sight of Dylan trying to jump onto Mark’s shoulders. “I can’t do it!” Dylan shouts. “How much do you think these idiots have had to drink?” Ethan whispers in my ear. “It looks like apparently to much.” I say back. “Just jump dumb ass!” Mark yells at Dylan. Dylan jumps and ends up knocking Mark right into a wall. “Damit! Dylan! What the fuck!” Mark shouts. “Yeah, let’s go get a refill.” Ethan says as he puts his hand on my lower back to lead me to the kitchen.

After about 2 hours and maybe one to many drinks, me and Ethan find ourselves sitting on the guy’s front porch swing. “You know I love you so soooo much right?” Ethan slurs. “Yes baby. I know.” I responded. “Come here!” He says as he ticks me under his arm. “You smell so-o good.” “Uhh thanks?” I say. “I lov-ve you-uu.” He slurs out. He then starts to lay his head in my lap. “Can you play with my hair? Pwetty pwlease.” He says, batting his eyelashes. “Ok you big baby.” “Ahhhh. Thank you-u!” I giggled at how clingy he gets when he’s drunk. “How much did you drink Eddy?” I ask. “U-m I donno. Probably way to-o much.” He slurs back. “Well we should probably get you back home then. Shouldn’t we?” He nods and tries to lift himself up. His hand slips and he ends up back in my lap. “Oh ok. Here I’m going to get up, go get the keys, and I’ll meet you back out here so we can leave.”I say. He nods.

I get up and walk back into the house. I look around at the house, seeing fewer people than last time, but know the people still here are plastered. Dylan and Mackie are going on about something, while Mark is trying to impress some girl while being totally shitfaced. I quickly find my keys, and slip out of the house. When I walk back onto the porch, Ethan is still on the swing, but now he seems sad. “Babe, what's wrong?” I ask. “Y/n! You didn’t leave me?!” He was surprised. “Eddy, I told you I was going to get the keys. Come on. I’m taking you home.” I told him. He gets up, follows behind me to the car. “Did I ever tell you I love you so much?” He asked. “Yes yes you did. And I love you so so much too.” He smiles and gets into the car. I ended up taking my hotshot hockey player boyfriend home, and put him to bed. Who knew he was so clingy when he had one too many.
