I have been seeing @daisydevorak and their mermaid handler au for mermay pop up on my dash a time or two and got inspired!! So here’s a quick sketch of handler Maeve! I had a ton of fun designing a uniform for it lol. (I appear with permission ofc)

Her story in the au is fairly simple, she’s one of the more experienced and knowledgable handlers in the sanctuary after being transferred from the other wing of the sanctuary (she worked with seals, otters and on the occasion, sharks) to the mer wing. She works closely with the more stubborn merfolk due to her experience in animal handling. She also leads small tours because of her enthusam and passion for what she does! She still doesn’t swim (and yes she is still deathly afriad of it for now) but you can catch her talking with some of the mermaids after she’s finished work. She most enjoys working with the kids on field trips, but don’t let her bubbly personailty fool you, she’s a stubborn one. A strong arm and a stronger personality, she loves her job and has quite a time chipping past rough exteriors to understand merfolk better.
