Shift in Flo's demeanor? What do you mean? I haven't been paying much attention to her (or anything having to do with this).

Hi Anon!

Let me preface this by saying this is my personal opinion based on the very surface-level impression I’ve had of the DWD dynamics, so please take everything I say with a grain of salt.

Basically, some people have noticed that there’s been a huge dip in the excitement of the DWD cast re: the movie. Chris Pine didn’t seem to talk about it much in the last interview we saw (the one where he called Harry a love) and seemed solely focused on the aesthetics. I’ve checked out Gemma Chan’s IG, as well as Florence’s, and apart from posts about thanking their crew, and Instagram stories about mornings on set, etc. they don’t seem to be posting anything more.

Flo also seems to not be interacting with Olivia much on SM — no comment on the post Olivia made for her after they wrapped, no thank you’s, etc. And while this could mean literally absolutely nothing, some people have clocked this as odd because, pre-filming, the cast seemed extremely pumped about the movie. Also, given how active Flo is on her SM, it’s reading as a little standoffish and I’ve seen people threorize that Flo isn’t comfortable with the Holivia stunt given that it’s pulled focus completely off the movie itself and shifted it to, essentially, Olivia’s personal life.

Personally, I think the entire stunt is a hamfisted shitshow, so if I were an Oscar nominee busting my ass to keep the quality of my work up there, it would piss me the fuck off if six months of work was basically whittled down to “the year my director was sleeping with my co-star” in the media, but again, we know that stunts like this are par for the course in Hollywood, so she might be used to it. Nevertheless, Flo looks like the kind of person who’s very serious about her work and being taken seriously, is hot off a movie that had a very respectable and acclaimed female director, and also has experience dating her former director (Zach Braff, who is also more than 10 years older) and from what I’ve heard, they waited a year after their movie to be linked together publicly so as not to affect the project or how the media perceived their relationship.

So, taking all of this into consideration, I can see totally see how Flo would kinda be ehhhhhhh about the stunt, and how her recent lack of public excitement towards the film and warmth towards Olivia can read as a change in her demeanor compared to her being as pumped as she was in the beginning.

Then again, she could also just be tired, or busy, or COVID measures could be making set dynamics more tense than they would usually be, or she could just be interacting with O in person rather than online. There are a million different ways to read it, but something in my gut just makes me think it’s odd.

I did do some spoilery mini-lbs for the series. Also lol, I wrote a really detailed review when I watched it (Feb 2017), that I didn’t publish then for some reason. It’s not a show I am inclined to revisit, so here are my thoughts from then, with some mild editing.

what works

the chemistry: barun and surbhi have good chemistry, and their scenes together are enjoyable. they sell all the facets, from the flirting to the attraction to the nice comfortable intimacy they settle into eventually.

the progressiveness: i dunno if the sponsorship deal from tinder mandated it, but the show is refreshingly sex positive (… for something coming out of a mainstream tellywood production house.)

the screenplay: the dialogue, especially in the scenes where meera and haider banter and flirt, is fun. 4 lions shows have always had some brilliant dialogue (esp. in the shiny starting days - the honeymoon period.) if you’re into shayaari and the like, you’ll enjoy that stuff in sobti’s soulful husky voice. i’m not, so i found it pretty corny.

what doesn’t work

the pacing: where tanhaiyan suffers the most, is pacing. i mean, call me cynical, but i found it really hard to buy that two people, who met like what… 4 days ago? could be THIS deeply in love. for godssake, how MUCH can you love, or even KNOW a person with whom your only conversations have been sexy banter? the only deep thing they know about each other is that they’ve both lost important people in their lives. as much as i love sobti and jyoti (who are good actors for the most part and engage me emotionally), i was constantly rolling my eyes that within less than a week of meeting each other, these two had gone through lust-love-a breakup-ENGAGEMENT-second breakup. MAN, THERE’S A LOAF OF BREAD ON MY KITCHEN COUNTER THAT I’VE HAD A LONGER AND MORE STABLE RELATIONSHIP WITH.

the writing: the writing is the second biggest issue i have with this show, almost equal to the pacing. the thing is, the show feels like a fanfic that’s been brought to life. not even GOOD fanfic, but a mediocre fanfiction riddled with plot holes and crack AUs. look, haider and meera have emotional issues. all fine and good. by episode 9, they’ve opened up to each other (trust me when i say i’m using the phrase “opened up” in the loosest manner possible.) and seem to have made a decision to be together. but then lo and behold, in the last 5 minutes of the second last episode, there’s a WHOLE NEW PROBLEM. like… why? so unnecessary. just to round it out to 10 episodes?

the slap: misandrist that i am, i am usually rooting for the asshole male lead to get slapped, especially on a 4 lions show, where he most probably deserves it. but in this show even *i* was like, oh come on, that was unwarranted. yes, he’s being a jerk, but the slap was just… ??????? and lol, that one slap and a lecture from meera seems to thikaane lagaofy all of haider’s emotional issues instantly. lmao if only it were that easy; kisi ko duniya mein therapy ki zaroorat hi nahi hoti. (which we know that all 4 lions men need. extensively.)

the pandering: sometimes, the progressiveness of the show seems to be be bordering on pandering, with no real motivation behind it other than to SEEM progressive. like tanya, meera’s friend, who talks about wanting “no-strings-attached sex” with an italian guy and in the very next minute, wistfully saying she could have had a half-italian baby by now. um, that doesn’t sound very “no-strings-attached” to me. or the fact that avantika and sid’s whole big issue is solved by ONE sentence from haider “sabka past hai, tera hai, mera hai; ladkiyon ka past kyun nahi ho sakta?” (to which all the ladies appreciatively nod @ haider, seeing him as the new paragon of feminism) … okaaaaay then.

haider’s character suffers from classic 4 lions male lead bipolarity. one second, he’s lovingly asking her how she is the way she is (so “cool and non-judgmental!”), and when the answer includes guilt over death of her family, he freaks the fuck out and shuts down. what, did he think he’s the only person on the planet who’s ever had to deal with death and regret? what does her answer have anything to do with HIM? he gets slapped for talking flippantly about her parents’ death and grief, and within the matter of 2 scenes, he’s telling meera that she “saw his soul”, when he’s revealed absolutely NOTHING personal about himself, including the reason of his grief. he proposes marriage, and when meera (very rightfully!) says it’s moving a little quickly, he explodes to accuse her of loving her career more than him. um, she’s known you for like 72 hours, buddy. calm the fuck down. don’t even get me started on the fact that he just abandoned her with no explanations given on their engagement day, based on some assumptions he made by sherlocking some clues together (that too wrongly.) classic fucking 4 lions male lead move.

meera’s character is a pushover when it comes to haider’s above bad behaviour. i know every 4 lions female lead can be accused of this, but there’s a difference between them and meera; which is that the former have at least known their male leads for months, before getting tied down into matrimony with them. to an extent, they’ve somewhat made their peace and accepted that side of their partners and “love” them despite that, due to other redeeming qualities/the emotional journey they’ve been on with them over an extended period of time. if a dude you’ve known for all of 4 days starts acting like this, why would you put up with it, let alone fall in love with him? i find the ending especially ridiculous, that she takes him back after he ran away on their engagement day, with zero explanations or conversations, telling her friend that she “understands why haider acted like that” and doesn’t blame him at all. sis, sit the fuck down.

all the friends are highly highly annoying. sid and tanya are pushy and passive aggressive when haider and meera don’t want to talk about emotionally draining topics. sid actually YELLS at haider for not being able to process his grief in the manner thatHE demands. then there’s avantika and her nonsense. from her problems with the saas (what was the point of that, really???), to her guilt issues. she goes and confesses her tryst with sameer to haider instead of sid (HOW EVEN? THE TWO MEN HAVE SUCH DIFFERENT BODY STRUCTURES. ANYONE WITH THE GIFT OF EYESIGHT CAN TELL IT’S HAIDER), and when he gently tries to help her out, she attacks him for being responsible for raza’s death. like… why? he’s been nothing but an absolute sweetheart to her, being supportive and accommodating her every whim. in the end, she doesn’t even apologize for what she says to him! and don’t even get me started on the worst one of all - raashi, who keeps harping on about PAAP over and over, and even goes so far to say that the avantika and sid broke up because the avantika ate egg when she wasn’t supposed to. i really don’t know why anyone else in that group put up with her and her garbage. the least offensive of them all was that one guy who was more like the wedding organizer than an actual friend, always obsessing about everyone not eating enough.

overall opinion

tbh, quite a middling series for me. i don’t regret watching it, but ehhhhhhh…. i didn’t enjoy it as much considering the people involved in the project (and the amount of time i’d spent waiting for it - i was following its production quite closely all throughout 2016.) the writing just overall was a washout for me (eta: esp. now that i have seen that ‘unscripted’ interview with jyoti/sobti… the way they were gushing about it, and gul saying she cried writing it and stuff…. and i’m just like… OVER THIS???? REALLY? i mean, there have been episodes of ipk and ib where i have genuinely gotten emotional… this series did not have a single episode that pulled me in with the feelings like that.) i really think it could have used tighter scripting to make it more concise and snappy.i would have ended the show once haider and meera made up after their first big fight.my ideal arc for this show would have been the two characters’ relationship growing from a mere sexual attraction, to a genuine emotional kinship that helps them to start healing from their grief, and left it at that, without cramming in all the heavy love and marriage stuff.

Marco and his S/o -Marco didn’t know why he was called at this time of day to see Pops. Marco is more confused when he sees his s/o with Pops. When S/o said she needed to talk with him, Marco is even more confused because why does Pops need to be here. -Marco thought she was going to break up with him to be honest, lately she has been a little bit distant. He can understand especially since she is a little bit younger than him. She grabs his hands, trembling a bit.

-She smiles and says “I’m pregnant, Marco” and everything stops. Marco stares at her then at Pops, who had a shit eating grin on his face, then back at her.- “Eh……..EHHHHHHH!!!”- “Gurarararara!” “Pops it's not funny. Marco just fainted.Damn.Marco get up.This is not manly of you!”- When Marco wakes up from his nap, he is so thrilled about the news, not very thrilled that his crewmates are teasing him about fainting. His S/o warns him not to faint when she needs him there for the birthing. Sabo and his S/o -S/o was nervous to tell Sabo that she was pregnant. What if he didn’t want to have the child? How can they raise a child in this environment? He is wanted by the government. This day is getting worse. She wanted to tell him before dinner at least. -She searches for Sabo only to be told by Dragon that he sent Sabo on an important mission that is going to last a few months. At that moment, something inside of her snapped. She visibly starts to shake, furious that Sabo would leave without saying goodbye or anything. She glares at Dragon and he flinches. - “DRAGON, TODAY WAS THE DAY I TOLD SABO I’M PREGNANT!!” S/o let out a whole lecture at Dragon. Dragon just sat there and took it. He offer to get Sabo back or get Sabo on a snailphone. - “NO! I WANT TO TELL HIM FACE TO FACE! THAT BASTARD DID THIS TO ME!” -After 26 weeks, S/o was showing a lot. She is glad about this pregnancy and couldn’t wait for Sabo to see her. She made sure that no one told Sabo about this. Sabo, on the other hand,had no idea until he came back. The first thing that came out of his mouth is “S/O you have gotten bigger!”. S/o’s smile drops and proceed to beat Sabo up with hormone fuelled rage that was festering for weeks. - “IS THIS HOW YOU TREAT YOUR BABY’S MOTHER!!! NOT EVEN SAYING GOODBYE AND YOU TELL ME I HAVE GOTTEN BIG, YOU ASS! I’m with y-your child and--This leads a crying S/o and and a beaten up Sabo at the docks. Ace and his S/o -Ace just sits there, with a stupid grin on his face, while S/o sighs in relief. S/o thought that maybe Ace didn’t want to have a kid period. She knows that his father is Gold D Roger and it's a sensitive subject. Yet, here she is breaking the news to him that he is going to be a father. -No one planned for this. S/o is scared that maybe she is not ready to be a mother. Ace is there to support her and tell her she is going to be a great mother and he promise to better than his old man. -Yet, no one prepare S/o to Ace leaving to get Blackbeard from killing Thatch. No one would comfort her when Pops told her about Ace’s capture and his date of execution. No one is there for her when he didn’t come back to her. Marco tried his best to be there for her and the baby, but S/o couldn’t burden him with her problems as he is now a captain. -When the baby is born, she didn’t expect two healthy baby boys. They look just like their father and they look up and smile at her, so similar to that same stupid smile that Ace has when he found out he was going to be a father.

“I don’t think that’s too hot of an idea.” You responded, shuffling the books which were threatening to full out of your arms. When was your mum going to get you a new bag?

“Oh c’mon (Y/N)! I promise it won’t end up like last time!” Ponyboy wined next to you, tripping over a lurking rock on the path.

“What, me having to talk you out of an ass whopping from Darry? Yeah, no thanks Pony. Oh, and you didn’t send me a postcard.” You bit your lip trying not to smile at his perplexed look.

“Oh - uh - Sorry...What?” The words came tumbling out of his mouth as his eyebrows became more knotted together.

“Didn’t you just have a trip a few moments ago?” You teased him.

“No, I fell over a rock.” He answered as if you were being stupid.

“You know Pony, you ain’t too smart.” You laughed as you turned away from him to walk down your street.

As you looked back over your shoulder, you saw that he was still putting the pieces together about the joke you had just told.

“HEY! YOU AIN’T TOO FUNNY EITHER!” He yelled seconds after you had walked away.

You were a couple of houses down from your house when you heard the revving of your dads car. Please, not tonight.

You ran forward, holding your books tightly to your chest as you tried to catch your dad before he left.

Too late.

“DAD!” You screamed as he went flying past and down the lane.

You swiftly span round to see your mother screaming profanities at the top of her lungs. “Ma? What in the hell are you doing?” You asked her, anger lingering in your tone as you saw some of your neighbours sticking their heads out of windows.

“GET YOUR ASS IN HERE!” She ordered you, not stopping the screen door from hitting her on the ass as she stormed back in.

Steading your breaths and walking over into your house, you saw that it was a mess. Your parents had clearly been fighting again.

“Ma? What happened this time?” You questioned her, bending down to pick up a broken picture frame.

“Don’t talk to me like that, girl. Don’t act as though you’re innocent in this. Always making your dad mad, always causing problems. He left because we weren’t good enough.” She snarled in response, sitting down on the dusty sofa.

Frustration boiling through your veins, you dropped your things and ran out of the house with only one destination on your mind.

“Pony, Sodapop, Darry! You in?” You shouted into the living room as you opened the door.

“It’s Two-bit.” “And Steve!”

Sighing you pushed your way in and slinked over to the kitchen. “The hell are you too doing?” You suspiciously said, eyeing them over as they crowded round the counter.

“Nothing.” Steve responded with his mouth full.

“Well if you’re eating somethin’, give me some.” As you were reaching over to get a piece, Steve grabbed your arm. “Na-a. None for you sweet cheeks.”

You gave him a look as if to say ‘You serious?’ He smirked in response, his hand still lingering on your arm.

“Well damn, if I didn’t know any better I’d say you too were into each other.” Two-bit broke the silence between you and Steve.

“Well damn, if I didn’t know any better I’d say that you had the appetite of a pig that ain’t been fed in months.” You retorted, reaching over for the piece of chocolate cake that Two-bit was shovelling into his mouth by the second.

“(Y/N)?” Sodapop called out from the corridor.

“What’s up, Popsie?” You had given him that nickname since you’d first met him eleven years ago. You thought his name was funny so you renamed him.

“When you gonna stop calling me that?” He groaned. He never liked the nickname.

“When you stop greasing your hair.” You contradicted, licking the icing off your finger.

Hearing a sigh on the part of Sodapop, you made your way over to hear what he wanted.

Of course he had to be shirtless. “Which one?” He quizzed you, holding up to flannels that looked the exact same.

“Hell, as if I know.” You laughed, singling to the clothes you were wearing (scruffy and old blue jeans, falling apart white converse, topped with a ripped white shirt and a popped collared faux leather jacket).

“Ah c’mon, it ain’t that bad.” Steve said from behind you as he swung his arm over your shoulder. You noticed that his shirt was undone.

“Ya ma still ain’t bought you no new clothes?” Two-bit asked since he was the one you often borrowed clothes from.

“Does it look like it?” You joked back, making it clear that the bottom of your shoe was peeling off.

You still hadn’t moved Steve’s arm from your shoulder. You had subconsciously registered that he was slowing moving his fingers along your shoulder.

Two-bit glanced to Sodapop and he gave an uncomfortable look back.

“I ain’t lookin’ for no sympathy so don’t be giving me none.” You were rather offended by the act.

Two-bit put his arms up in surrender and Sodapop just smirked. “The hell are you smirking at.” You grunted at him.

“Nothing, just the fact that you still got a temper as strong as ever.” Sodapop winked as he finished his sentence. Steve, however, tensed.

“What you tensing at?” You spat out without even thinking.

Steve looked taken back at first, looked over at Sodapop who you could see had eyes filled with cheekiness. ‘Go for it,’ he mouthed.

“Dangit! I love you okay!”

The words took you by surprise.

“W-what?”

“You heard me. Ain’t it obvious.” He swung his arm off of you as if he was directing at something.

You paused for a moment before jumping up at him, swinging your arms around his neck so that he was the same height as you before pulling him into the most passionate kiss you could pull off. Damn, he tasted like chocolate.

“Well, would you look at that. I didn’t know they had it in them.” Two-bit giggled.

A quick smacking sound and a yelp informed you that Sodapop had punished Two-bit for ruining the moment.

As you and Steve both pulled back with humungous grins, you saw Sodapop smiling while Two-bit winced as he rubbed his neck and glared at Sodapop.

You burst out laughing as Steve jumped back and let out a yell of excitement, chocolate now smudged over his mouth and quite possibly yours.

Dang, you felt good.

FAQ

Okay, so who are you? As my About says, I’m Bre, and I run this blog. Hence the blog name, Bre Abroad.

Abroad? Where? Tokyo.

Wow, Tokyo! You’re so lucky! Ehhhhhhh hang on a sec. I get this response almost every time, and it bothers me. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy where I live and especially where I work, but I’m not living it up like you probably think I am. I’m living on an English teacher’s salary (even worse - an assistant English teacher’s salary) and I have student loans to pay, and if I’m going to be honest, I thought I would get a rural placement to help me manage the economics of it all. I’m making the most of a surprise.

Uh...okay. You say you enjoy where you live and work - where’s that? I live in Setagaya, the westernmost of the 23 wards of Tokyo (like a borough of NYC). For context, I’m a 15-minute train ride from Shinjuku, the busiest train station in the world and my gateway to the rest of Tokyo. I’ve fondly nicknamed Setagaya “rich people suburbia” because it is - this is where the commuters with nice salaries settle their families. I work at a high school within walking distance of my apartment, as an assistant language teacher (ALT).

How did you get this job with this high school? I applied to the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Program during my last year of university. I’m no JET expert, but as I understand it, it works like this: you’re hired by the Japanese government and they assign you a Board of Education (BOE) to work for, and the BOE in turn assigns you a school. You can list your preference of location in the interview, but ultimately you go where they decide they need you.

Any idea why you ended up in Tokyo? Unlike most Tokyo JETs, I think I can point to two reasons: (1) I mentioned in my interview that I wanted to have access to a doctor to refill medicines, and (2) I mentioned in my application essay that I have a Japanese friend who came from Tokyo and who inspired me to do JET in the first place. When it was time to list my placement preference, I just said “not Hokkaido and not Kyushu” to eliminate the hottest and coldest climates I could think of. I guess I got the true middle, huh?

So what’s your high school like, then? Did you at least request a high school level? I did! All of my teaching experience (running a summer camp in Lithuania, tutoring high school and university peers, teaching English to a 50+-year-old Chinese woman, TAing for an introductory astronomy class) involved high school level or higher, so I’m glad I got the level I know best. My high school is a mid-level school within the BOE1, which means the majority of my students will go to decent universities after they graduate. I’d say it reminds me of my high school - after all, there’s just enough expectation for excellence but just enough laxness to let students explore their passions - but it’s also 75% girls, so that’s a change. I suspect I was assigned to my school in particular because I have an astronomy teaching background, and my school has (duh duh duh) an astronomy club and a rooftop observatory! Not to mention a nap room for the teachers, not that I was really looking for that when I signed up.

Sounds cool! Do you speak any Japanese? I showed up in Japan able to carry on a basic, grammatically incorrect conversation, and I suspect I’ll be at this level for a long while. I’m slowly accumulating vocabulary and grammar, and you’ll see me getting alternatively excited and frustrated by both in this blog. I studied linguistics in university, so I’m probably more excited about these things than you’re used to.

So what’s the point of this blog? I need a place to keep track of all my anecdotes and tidbits. I tried to go without a blog for the first six months of my stay, but every time I’d tell a story to a friend/family member/friend who is like a family member, they’d be like, “Why aren’t you writing this down? This is blog material!” We’ll see about that. Plus, if anyone (e.g. my successor) has any questions about JET, it’ll be nice to have a body of writings to point to, instead of unloading every story I have. I’m quite good at that, but it takes a lot of time.

What kind of stuff can I expect to see in this blog? Not a lot of pictures, because they’d take me ages to manage. When I backpacked through Europe I kept a long journal-style blog, but that also took ages to manage. So I guess I’m going for short stories and insights about (a) my experiences as a teacher, (b) my experiences as a foreigner in Japan, (c) my experiences learning Japanese, and (d) my time traveling around Japan and Asia, if/when I get to it.

Are you planning to post consistently? God no. But I’ll try to post a link to new posts on Facebook around once a month.

What are the biggest things you want to do on JET? Let’s see, by the time I finish my contract in July 2019, I want to have:

Traveled within Japan (I’m thinking mostly big cities, but I’m open to towns if anyone has a specific recommendation)

Traveled around Asia (Korea, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Laos, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India...)

Gotten my Japanese fluency to the point where I can read most signs and have a conversation where I understand everything the other person is saying. Don’t hold me to that

Made friends with JETs and Japanese people alike

Found a way to connect my JET experience to my next steps. (After JET I want to go to grad school and study education, and then work for a university or an education-based nonprofit)

Seen and done enough in Tokyo to be sentimental when I leave.

Cool, cool. You forgot to mention who you are beyond the JET Program, though. Fair. Okay, I come from Colorado, I’m 23 years old, and I studied international affairs and linguistics in university. I’ve been to 27 countries total (US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and most of Europe) and lived in 5, and I can speak fluent English and French, basic Japanese and German, and a smattering of words and phrases in Spanish, Lithuanian, and assorted other languages. My hobbies are reading (books and fanfiction), writing (almost exclusively fanfiction), blogging on tumblr, and stargazing (yes, even in Tokyo). I seem to attract bizarre nerd friends, I adore my younger brother even though he’s too old to like it being advertised, and my family has had a total of eight pet ferrets.

Do you like anime? (Just because you live in Japan and all) Ha ha, yes, I like some anime. My favorite is Hetalia, but I also like Fullmetal Alchemist, Ouran High School Host Club, and Assassination Classroom. I have friends trying to pull me into Attack on Titan and Voltron: Legendary Defender (not a Japanese anime, but I’m counting it anyway). I'll be the first to admit that I’m not nearly as up to date as I should be, but I can have a passable conversation about half of the popular ones because all my friends and my tumblr dash buzz about them.

One last thing: can I come to Tokyo and crash on your couch? If I know you already, sure!

When did you realize that you were gay and not bi? I'm still figuring it out and I was wondering how you did it?

this is a great question anon.

so for those who don't know, i id’ed as bi for a really long time (like, from when i was 14 till around the time i turned 17, so i only stopped doing so recently). and i started noticing that most of my crushes were girls, or at the very least, they were a lot stronger with girls. basically, one day i though to myself - “so, erin. when was the last time you liked a boy?” and i started to back-track. ok so there was... um... my friend in 8th grade maybe? actually, no by that point i just wanted some actual friends, and wait... nope i made i full-on journal entry about how i didn't have crush on him... so... that one kid who asked me to dance in the 4th grade? ehhhhhhh maybe?? I mean, he was cool, but he was more like a best friend. he gets like 1/2 of a crush i guess. so then… the last full-on crush on a boy i had was in the 2nd grade. 2ND GRADE?????… well shit, i have got some evaluating to do.”

so after LOTS of thinking over many months, i realized that along with the fact that i am RARELY attracted to boys, if ever, if i ever did fall for a boy i probably wouldn’t want to act on those feelings.

overall, i just felt that it would make more sense to me to id as gay right now. sexuality can be a very fluid thing. who knows what i’ll be in 10 years, 5 years, 1? i might still id as gay, i might not. but right now, i am gay.

j it took a lot of introspection for me, but this is my experience, everyone’s journey of self-discovery is different. in the end, the experience is yours and yours alone.

-What have you been daydreaming about lately?

Having a house with a yard, having my student loans and car paid off, universal healthcare and basic income... On a more realistic note, I’m daydreaming a lot about my current fic, which revolves around the relationship between Elrond and Elros as they grow up and relate to the people around them.

-Any fictional characters you relate to very strongly?

Harriet the Spy always and forever. Menolly. Keladry of Mindelan. Lirael. I guess a lot of those female protagonists that stand apart from the rest of the characters in their universe and sometimes struggle to find their place among them.

-What media would you recommend to people who wanted to understand you?

Again, Harriet the Spy. It has been 20 years since my mom first read the book to me, and since then I have never found a book that understands me so perfectly or that has shaped my personality and outlook on the world quite like this one has.

-Do you have a place you compile or hoard music playlists? If it’s online could you link some favorites?

I've made a few playlists on 8tracks (three different volumes of all-metal sons of Feanor playlists should tell you a lot about me) and a big playlist to listen to while sewing SCA garb (again, it’s basically all metal). Other than that, I don’t really make playlists. I did have a workout playlist at one point but I’m not sure what happened to it, lol.

I still listen to CDs in my car. It’s just more convenient.

-How do you feel about platonic cuddles/kisses?

Ehhhhhhh not a fan. I’m somewhat touch-averse most of the time, even around my family, but with my partner I’m a giant snuggle.

-What relatively uncommon instrument would you like to learn to play?

I actually played the oboe in high school and college, surely that counts! I’d like to get better at it, but I don’t have a lot of opportunities to play it these days.

Aside from the oboe, I’m interested in medieval, renaissance, and baroque instruments. If someone has a spare hurdy-gurdy to give me, I’d definitely be happy to take it off your hands.

-Outside of countries in Asia or Europe, where would you most like to travel?

I’m always interested in wilderness camping, no matter where. I’d like to go to somewhere really remote in the Rockies or Alaska or anywhere really.

-Some favorite scents?

Coffee, baking bread, pot roast, books, fresh laundry, freshly processed copies/xeroxes

-What is your favorite gemstone?

I’m not sure! Alexandrite?

-What languages do you like the sound of?

I really like the sound of spoken Arabic and German even though I don’t speak either language. I’d like to learn them, but as with the instruments, I don’t have a lot of opportunity to use them (I could use a course in conversational Spanish, however!)

-Do you often remember your dreams? If so, what do they tend to be like?

I’ve been on a couple of antidepressants in the last few months that have given me VERY VIVID DREAMS that I do remember later, sometimes for days after, but usually just random themes and details. I remember big cities, tall buildings, a labyrinthine shopping mall that has showed up over several different nights, starting a new job, going back to school, basically a lot of alternate lives that are much more interesting than my current one lol.
