Back to Superbat fanfic for this week!  Well, almost all Superbat.  There is one Twobats (Burharvey?) fic included, “Dad’s New Boyfriend” by TheClamBeforetheStorm.  It’s not completed, but it’s been fun to read!  The first fic is an update of one I’m currently following as well (I think I’ve recced it before, still so good!).  The other three are Supebat :D

The weather is getting warmer, and this weekend has been so nice.  I went out and touched grass twice this week!  There’s a nice little park close to where I live, so I walked around there yesterday.  I was able to get some pictures of robins!  Unfortunately, Batman was nowhere to be seen 😔

The coffee shop I go to updated there seasonal lattes for Spring!  I got a Hibiscus Morning latte to go with my pastry and breakfast sandwich.  Very tasty!

I took the long, rocky path today!  I like how the rocks make the path look like it has steps.

I just thought this pool of water looked neat.

Lots of birds at the bird watch station!  A blue jay, female rose-breasted grosbeak (I think???), robin (again, no Batman around), female red-bellied woodpecker, and male dark-eyed junco.

There was also a white tailed deer hanging around too???  We both looked at each other in shock for a bit, because we surprised each other.  There are fences around this area of the arboretum to keep the deer out because they’ll eat all the pretty flowers.  I have no idea how this guy got in here, but it’s not the first time I’ve seen them in this area of the arboretum.

One of the main reasons why I used to avoid Isekai’s, and fantasy works in general, like the plague is because of how over saturated they’d become with things that didn’t feel like they even belonged to the genre to begin with… it’s not too hard to find works that stand out but so much of those works have been pushed down and forgotten, it just sucks.

re: elf servants

I think generally there are servants in royal/noble households simply for practical reasons and they generally fall into 2 categories: specialised servants (think, stewards and messengers and scribes, masters of horses or kennels, that kind of thing) and servants who help with the upkeep of the household (cleaning, repairs, cooking and also the apprentices and assistants of specialised servants)

specialised servants are probably quite prestigious roles and fields of industry in their own right, and they are considered full members of a household, and probably are closely linked to the person they serve - it's as much a political and social statement to be Finwe's chief scribe as it is an economic one

but the second category are more associated with the house than the family living in it - for example, Finwe's palace in Tirion would function both as a home and a diplomatic and administrative centre, it would be impossible for him to rule and keep up with chores himself. But Fingolfin's personal home would probably not have any full-time servants - when there more people than usual to feed or house then professionals might be hired, but for the most part I imagine the day to day is done by the family (made possible by the fact elves sleep and eat less than humans)

IRL domestic service (at least in the 18th century) often functioned as a kind of prep stage for adult life (for women in particular, but gender is probably not as big a factor for elves) and I could definitely see this in Valinor - domestic servants being 80% elves between 50-100 who haven't chosen an apprenticeship or similar in another field who are earning extra money to set up their own households, getting experience outside of the family, meeting others in their own ae cohort, learning independence etc. It's a job that comes with the offer of room and board + the wages a king/prince/lord can provide. Not glamorous, but not terrible.

The other 20% is made up of professional servants - experienced elves who are genuinely like the work and are contracted workers as much as a builder or gardener might be. Some of them might be independent and others part of businesses set up by other elves who are really into cooking/cleaning etc.

In Beleriand the situation (for the exiles at least) is probably very different, though I think there would be attempts to adapt the system - but there aren't as many households that need servants and there aren't as many young elves.

#i confess i very much enjoy making ocs who are bg characters and servants are perfect for this #made my own post because i could not fit this in the tags LMAO #also the amount of labour needed to run a pre industrial household is HUGE #but elves generally get around this by having a population that is 90% adult and having magic #and having the time for anyone to become vastly skilled in their field in a lifetime #so things like food and clothing production is almost always communal and in the hands of elves who are REALLY into that specific area #the magic being relevant here because elf magic preserves - elven clothes won't wear out elf food doesn't go off etc #(or at least not as easily as human food/clothes) #i prefer to write elf societies that only visually mirror human ones - to an outsider it looks like a hierarchy of lord and servants #but the dynamic is very different #but that is just my preference #silm meta #not really a meta i just need to be able to find this post on my blog lol #long post #this is one of my fave topics hence the rambling

Making a part 2 to this post since people on twitter really didn't understand the post and I'm feeling petty

(I have to emphasise I am not saying you can't refer to earlier cOwen as maze Owen to explain cOwen at different periods of his life. I'm saying when we really look at it, maze Owen doesn't exist since they're the same person)

'maze' Owen doesn't exist bc it's a way that cOwen has come up with to justifying to himself how he could have cared for demons without shattering his ideals.

This is confused with cOwen have distinct personalities and missing how his character hasn't changed from the start with his idea of protecting everyone.

In his final moments he says a few important things to note. The first being "I was a tool. I was trained. Should I have... I should have." And then right after "I can't think in my head it's split in two"

It seems some takes this as 'maze' Owen coming back and fighting with cOwen on should he have killed cApo and the others. However rather than 'maze' Owen coming back it's this internal conflict he has with himself and his ideals.

Before he says this he's getting flashbacks to the early maze days where he showed kindness to demons. Something he would never let himself do in the past outside the maze. And something he would never do after remember it all.

Then he says to the voices "Is that who people trust? Old Owen" while those memories are playing. The voices respond saying they miss that Owen and he replies "Yes? That wasn't me" this is possibly where it further adds to the whole 'maze' Owen is a different person thing.

But what people miss is he's trying to seperate those memories as a different person. Rather than facing the fact his ideals fall apart as soon as he accepts that demons are not these creatures that betray and kill you at any moment.

His thinking comes from the manipulation and propaganda he's been feed. In his final episode we get these quotes which show just how much his thinking revolves around protection and also showing what years of training did to him.

He understands he was a tool that was used. He's well aware everything he is doing may not have a purpose and get he still plays this part. He can't break away from that thinking because if he lets himself he has to face the fact that his whole life had no true meaning and he was as he realised a tool. This is where we get these lines from him though.

"I did what I had to do I served my country and this is the thanks I get"

"I don't understand I was meant to..."

"I can't think... They trusted him but not me"

They're such interesting lines from him because he still feels like he has this duty to protect everyone. And then he can't understand why they would trust the Owen that was so easily fooled and trusted than himself right now who is still trying to protect them and has seen the dangers as what they really are.

While he has this internal conflict with himself the main reason we have this 'maze' Owen thing is from the scene when cMagic comes to see him.

And I think when you have this much context it doesn't make sense that this is a seperate persona? Identity? He has.

Right before it we are shown how conflicted he feels about a part of himself he'd rather seperate than accept is him. So he tells cMagic "I hurt my best friends please" and "it wasn't me I'm sorry"

He's still seperating his own actions to two people because he can only accept he did these things if it wasn't him. The idea that has to be a different Owen who cared for a demon because it really does make him face everything he's done.

So when people seperate cOwen into these two parts it's just falling for the lies he tells himself because this maze owen never existed.

Who he is after the reunion is still the same person as before. But what changes is this dramatic shift in those ideals we've seen from him since the start. Because now demons are not included and since the beginning of the series cOwen has been close to a lot demons, it triggers memories and he enjoys their company. So when he starts killing the people closest to him automatically we believe he has changed a lot. And yes he has! But you can't miss that he does these things to protect everyone else in the clearing.

When he remembers everything in his mind he doesn't need to protect demons. Since they are a threat. There are moments people try to argue where 'maze' Owen peaks through such as his hesitation before chasing after cApo in the reunion. But it's really cOwen understanding his hatred towards demons may have been nothing. Was he really going to throw away everything for the past? And so he doesn't change. He continues this path he can never return from.

Everything he has worked for doesn't matter anymore. And cOwen cannot accept that so he once again he plays the role to exterminate them. But by doing so he has to seperate his old self so it doesn't conflict with what he desperately wants to be true.

Which is his whole life had a purpose.

ahhh i really try to keep things Flirty and Fun here, but i just wanted to lower the capitalization to flirty and fun for a moment, because. this is the second day in a row that i have full-on weepy cried irl over comments on my newest fic, and i really, really, really cannot thank you guys enough for the response to it from the absolute bottom of my heart.

fic writing brings me a lot of joy. it's both a creative outlet and a form of escapism. it's also a very intentional challenge i give my brain. yes, fundamentally i'm writing about two anime guys wanting to kiss sooo bad (because they should)—but inevitably i've put little bits of myself into my stories, as well. my little vulnerable insides that i sometimes struggle to look at directly. you know, regular artist stuff. it's hard not to, because all stories come from the heart (even fanfic).

i stopped writing for myself for many years, and i have only just returned to it this year for various reasons. the response from everyone has been absolutely overwhelming, even from day one. i'm not always the best at responding to messages or comments fast (or even at all, depending on the day) but i read everything. tags, bookmarks, ao3 comments, dms, inbox messages—all of it. i have screenshots saved in case anyone deletes anything. i go back and revisit things over and over again. every single kudos or like brings me joy.

i cannot overstress how much i love and cherish every single person who reads the stuff i've written. i'm a writer but there are literally no words big enough in the english language to express how you guys make me feel. all i can do is say thank you and keysmash and send lots of heart emoji memes... and hope i am getting the message across. but really, really thank you. from the bottom of my heart thank you. thank you, thank you, thank you.

I put solos first, and duet songs at the end of each characters' section. Some have a lot of additional group songs and duets (like Haruka's va and Kotoko's) but I just put a few.

All of Muu's Caligula songs also have remixed versions from the soundtrack. I didn't want to put the 'same' songs back to back, but if you were interested those exist!

Jackalope's va also sings -- I didn't include it here since we don't hear him sing in Milgram (thankfully afsdfd) but he has a bunch of music too!

What I really appreciate about WOE.BEGONE is how you can follow the plot threads of how one thing leads into another.

Instead of sitting through several filler episodes or waiting for the background plot to become relevant, you can clearly see how each seasons connects.

Mikey goes to OVER, he meets Hunter and Edgar, he kills Hunter, he ends up at the Flinchite Compound, he gets kidnapped, he meets Mike and Michael, he returns to OVER, he starts Base, he loses Base, they fight to get Base back, Mustardseed happens, they have to deal with the OVERMikes, the Hunters take over, the timeline changes, there's a connectivity strike, the fight to get the Mikes back, the new timeline and its consequences, the struggle to escape the Compound's grip, the start of the war, the disappearance of Base, and so on.

It all flows into it each other and makes relistening so fun because you know how one thing leads to another and it makes perfect sense how you start with a guy fucking around on reddit and ends (currently) with multiple versions of Mike Walters making a convulted plan to steal a badge of Ty Betteridge so they can turn off the snow and escape the dome in the compound while the OG versions of Mike, Mikey, Michael and MW are trying to rescue Base alongside Texas!Michael and Outlaw!Ty.
